Good: gorgeous graphics and sound design. Outstanding campaign story and voice acting. True cross-platform between both consoles and PC players. No pay-to-win microtransactions, strictly cosmetic. Modest PC client requirements.

Bad: incomplete endgame. All stick, no carrot balance philosophy. No effort to improve quality of life issues. Emphasis on player minutes, microtransactions, and other corporate metrics over customer satisfaction. Aggressive changes to encourage the "right" way to play as dictated by the devs. No random scenarios like D3 Rifts (i.e. no procedurally generated dungeons).

Neutral: darker and grimmer than Diablo 3. Closer to Diablo 2 in terms of setting and art. Slower paced combat than Diablo 3, less "arcade-y".

Diablo 4 is one of the most anticipated games of the last few years. The launch went very smoothly, which gave many people hope for the game in general. But the developers seem to be ignoring player feedback in their attempts at "balancing" the game. Statements are made about preserving the long term health of the game, but in practice that just seems like artificially slowing down character progress with nerfs to damage and experience. Some changes make no sense other than as ways to extend active player minutes, a metric used to indicate user engagement on the platform (and something the suits like to see).

The attempts at balance feel very punitive and subtractive; that is, instead of increasing things on one side and decreasing them on the other, the vast majority of changes to gameplay involve reducing the amount of damage players can do, increasing the damage that monsters can take and deal, and slowing down the rate of progression. For a company that literally invented the ARPG genre and has almost two decades of experience managing a live service game in WOW, these actions feel comically inept and unfriendly. The lack of a player test realm - an environment in which players can help developers test changes to the game - means that balance changes are made in a partial vacuum. In a context where the player is the ultimate arbiter of how things work in practice, this makes no sense, especially when PTRs have been a fundamental part of WOW's development and were used in Diablo 3.

In short, it feels like Blizzard somehow forgot almost everything they learned from Diablo 3 when making Diablo 4. Players are punished for finding effective configurations, with changes that not only fix "broken" builds, but changes that ruin every build by turning down fundamental values without turning others up for balance. It's not too much to expect a company with Blizzard's resources and experience to provide a product that respects the player and leverages the wisdom accumulated by literally decades of experience in the market.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've logged 350 hrs since launch and honestly I can't play this game anymore. Nerfs aside (and yeah, they hurt), there is still a major issue with memory leaks and disconnects. Resistances still don't work. Skill/build diversity is a joke because you can't clear content as fast if at all. Dungeons and mobs are essentially copy pasted. There is no imagination or creative spark in the content, and their "end game" still doesn't exist. The game is just a soulless shell and it seems the dev team just doesn't care. Expand

Devs do not listen to player base. Tried out pre season game play. And nothing was addressed from what players are asking for. Game needs a lot of work and devs need to listen to player base . For now I’m done with D4. I’ll check back later maybe season 2 or 3

They pretend to care but don't,

For gods sake they nerfed minions into ground based on lvl 25 beta feedback and then on live the minions suck ass at end game and they refuse to buff them. etc. their just idiots.

Sold in exceptional numbers, Diablo 4 can be considered successful as a product, but this success stems from the nostalgia effect, and mostly from people like me who bought into it due to this effect.

The game is released in what would be considered as "Beta" stage, there is a massive lack of quality of life improvements, the entire game feels repetitive and everything you do is a chore

There are much better things to do with your time, even if you are going to waste time, there are much more entertaining stuff to waste time with and spend your money on.

The level scaling is completely broken, as is the loot scaling. You have to level corectly or else you will essentially brick your character with gear. This game launched well. I was a fan and enjoyed it, which kind of surprised me positively seeing as I also played earlier installments of the series and feared the worst after the diablo immortal fiasco.

Sure there were issues, but hey, what new release doesn't have them? It also always takes some time to sort things out and get experience from live gaming and player feedback.

Unfortunately Blizzard is what Blizzard does and the philosophy apparently again is nerf what is fun and feels good in order to balance instead of buffing and bringing what is bad up to a level were it is good and usable as it ought to be. Games should be FUN, otherwise what is the point? Especially non pvp ones where players should be allowed to feel a bit overpowered after hours and days of leveling, grinding for optimized gear and tweaking builds.

This all peaked with the latest 1.1 patch before season 1, which made the game almost unplayable in terms of overall feel. Especially having experienced the pre patch version.

All classes (yes I have them all on high level) now feels very lackluster and just underwhelming.

More or less none of the Quality of Life changes that has been begged for by the player base for a good while now were implemented.

Frankly I no longer have much interest in playing this until this is reverted and massively fixed towards the buff side so it feels good and fun again.

Oh and did I mention they made the entire useless grind of leveling take a LOT longer with this latest patch as well, nerfing all the experience you can gain? The game does not even really begin until you are done with the story and hit level 50. And then there are 50 additional levels to grind up that already took forever. Especially frustrating for alts after you already done it once on your main class for anyone so inclined that wants to experience everything the game has to offer...

I'm OUT, at least until such a time as the power level of this game is back and surpassing what it was pre-season 1 and not least until Storage space and structure has been thoroughly fixed.

The game was pretty fun to play through first time around, especially since the campaign was new. Since the release of the new patch, the user experience has fallen like a limp noodle. Changes made to characters and monsters only increase the grind without adding any extra satisfaction or reward.

That’s Blizzard. And EA. Honestly, Diablo 4 has been a disaster since it’s release. It’s only redeemable quality was it’s campaign storyline. Beyond that it’s repetitive and a miserable grind. To add insult to injury, the devs continue to shoot themselves in the feet by making the game less and less enjoyable for it’s players. Every time a strategy or dungeon or item/combo is found to work well, the devs nerf it. INSTANTLY. All because the devs want the game to be more “challenging”. Pfft. There are plenty of ways to do that without sucking the fun out of something and requiring an addition couple hundred hours of grinding to get to the same point. Furthermore, when the devs get together to talk about the game, they say they’re going to address player concerns then blatantly do the opposite in their “campfire chats”. Locked comments of course.

Regardless, the point here is, if you haven’t bought Diablo 4 yet and you’re wondering if you should? Don’t. The same $60 USD could be spent on plenty of other games that are already in better conditions AND have an even brighter future ahead of them.

The game has it points, but the devs refuse to listen to the consumer..and keep making changes that create huge imbalances in the gameplay..and create a lot of feel bad moments. They've based thier development changes off of the top 1% of players and YouTube content creators..and destroyed the enjoyment of the regular and casual player.

There's a fair bit to like about Diablo IV — best-in-class sound design, intriguing character classes, fantastic graphics and occasionally addictive gameplay all feel like the series in its prime. However, even the best parts are let down by an undercurrent of frustrating design choices: the cynical inclusion of a Battle Pass, a bloated open world, repetitive mission structure and progression that too often feels meaningless cast a long shadow that let the latest Diablo title down. Future Seasons may refine what's here, but many of its issues sadly feel baked into the core experience. All but the most die-hard fans may wish to wait for a substantial sale on this one.
