A boring and uninteresting story with unlikable characters doing irrational things. Gameplay that is stagnant and repetitive which hasn't evolved in seven years. An unfortunate disappointment. An entirely average showing that does not hold a candle to this generations best.

The story is so Polarizing i think the fact that the people are so divided its exacly why it didnt delivered at some point i lost my objective. Abby story should have been some sort of a diff game or dlc i wouldn't mind getting to know her more but all i really wanted was more Joel and Ellie thats pretty much it. Expand

This is great gameplay with nonsensical story. Characters that have been in the apocalyptic atmosphere and should be somewhat adapted just act like complete idiots. Personally I believe if you have not played the first game you have a high likelihood to enjoy this game because you won’t know how far the story telling has fallen by comparison. I’ll just offer some advice... Old fans: Don’t buy the game. Save your money and assume the story ended with the first game.
New fans: I’m sure you can find the first game for cheap. While the mechanics are a downgrade because the game came out years ago.. the story is much better.

The above text is just my personal take on my experience with game. It is truly my opinion and should not stop you from making your own decision. I’m rating it a 5 out of 10 because creating a functional game earns you a 5 out of 10 in my book. The rest of the points are earned through innovation of mechanics and an excellent story. There weren’t any major innovations to game play in my opinion and the story was jarring and unbelievable to a player that has prior experience and exposure to the characters through the first game.

Personally I found it repetitive .

**World : the world is the strongest point of this game its beautiful and raw , you will found note through out the world that tell you the story of the people of this world . There is a lot of places in the game that you will found yourself just wanting to take a picture and share it , it this kind of a game

** Graphics : is next gen level , for me the thing that strike me is the animation of the faces and combat animation . There is really nothing to say about the graphics other then it very good and what to expact form naughty dog , the game works very well on the base ps4 and ps4 pro (1080p /30fps on ps4 , 1440p/30fps on ps4 pro )

** The story : this is the most controversial point of this game and the weakest aspect in my opinion , the story start in the first 30 min or soo with good start but after one major event the story become expected the dialogues between character is most of the part boring ( other then the ones between joel and Ellie ) don't get me wrong there is moments of the story that are good but they are very few of them , the second half of the game is its biggest problem of this game , the game wants you understand and sympathize with other characters and with that make the first game as if it does not exist the new characters are boring and there motivation are vague for the most part . I didn't like the story i tried to but I couldn't .

Conclusion : this game did a lot of wrong Choices especially on the story with a few good things this game could've been save if didn't add the second half of the game and " the killing is bad " message , when TLOU2 raveled I expected more , far more then what I get from it. . it's a good game (7.5/10) but as a sequal is bad and make no consideration of the first one , there is more to say about this game but I tried to keep it spoiler-free .

Last of us 1 was known for its great realistic story and characters, and fun for the time game-play it is the main reason it got was a masterpiece in a year of masterpieces(2011: batman Arkham City, Skyrim, Dark souls, etc). But that was nearly a decade ago, times have changed and How do you make a sequel to a masterpiece, that these not need one?

    Graphics:
Are amazing, of course, they are going to be amazing; it been decade it should be amazing.

    Gameplay:
the gameplay was all right, it these improve from original; it has not improved with the times. In-game that hellbent doing risks with the story; I would say that mechanics are too safe.

Story: I'm not going to spoil the story, the story is probably going to decide if you like the game; but everybody as pretty much spoiling it anyway, so most people have an opinion on both sides. But why is the story so diverse? because they changed the tone, themes and characters, which lead this major shift.
These are nothing wrong about changing all three at the same these in some others game, like persona where these no real story connection to past entities, but when this connection to past games, like in mass effect 2, there will be some problems if you did this.
However, This can be seen as artistic and brave to some, like when tomb raider did it. Tho, to others, can be seen as disrespect to fans and the original game, like Bomberman: act zero. In the end, it comes down to context, to how it executed.

Then finally I answer the question of why this happens? I believe two things are to blame, the original no real criticism and Hype going they and fans head. I believe because the original had no criticism, it had no need to improve; which lead to the reason why the gameplay doesn't; but hype and the acclaim because the story, lead to an echo chamber that made the story.
The story came from thinking they can do whatever they want, what they wanted was to tell a different story, and not the story fans fell in love in.

The let get this out of the way if the game was not last of us 2, would people care about the story, probably it's 25-hour game at that length in a story-driven game, it needs to be good, but It would not be as diverse as would be no hype.
Most other reviewer masterpieces either start with predecessors that had criticism work off of like witcher 3 or breath of the wild or suppose to be one-off that has no sequel like portal or Limbo. Nearly all games that are an acclaimed masterpiece have one predecessor or a sequel that is not as good as that for multiple reasons; Last of us 2 is that game.
However, they were a high chance Last of us 2 would have never live up to fans expectations, the hype was nearly at the end of the universal, and I think most would have been a little disappointed no matter.

That why I'm giving this game 6 because if it was not last of us 2, this game is a 7 out of 10; be this is last of us 2 and I'm going to be honest; I'm also disappointed.

When The Last of Us 2 opens up, you get a beautiful world, familiar soundtrack, and the return of both of the characters we all grew to love in the first game, Joel and Ellie. For the first 2 hours of gameplay, you feel right at home in the world. But it soon begins to fall apart. It is hard for someone who has replayed the first game multiple times to realize that the sequel is not up to par. TLOU is about characters and story. Many people, myself included, did not play the game for the gameplay, which is just like a lot of other games. It was the story and the chemistry between Joel and Ellie as a father-daughter duo that drew us all in. Part two feels like it completely disregards the relationship established in the first and the characters seem to change personality and consistency just to further the plot along. There are times where the characters feel like a different character entirely and I was left thinking, “(insert character name) wouldn’t have done that. They were smarter than that.”

After about 7 hours of gameplay, it begins to feel flat. In a world full of undead, even the living lose life. The story becomes cliche and predictable, and there is a section that is about 10 hours long that focuses on things that have nothing to do with the main story except that it is trying to establish a backstory for a new character. In the first game you learned about the characters as they pushed through the story, a 10 hour flashback was not needed to establish the characters. A lot of the times, things were just unnecessary and by the halfway point I was just wanting it to be over because I was just bored.

Boring is not a word I would like to use to describe The Last of Us 2, but it is what it is.

The ending is anticlimactic and it feels as if the game was trying too hard to be artsy and deep instead of just telling a good story. I felt so much emotion for these characters in the first game, and to this day I can’t get through the prologue without crying, but I felt nothing in part 2. The characters feel so different and inconsistent that if it weren’t for the fact that clickers were present, you could easily forget that this is even a TLOU game.

All that said, the graphics, soundtrack, and acting are phenomenal. The story, is flat and feels more dead than the undead themselves.

This game is definitely getting bombed by negative reviews on purpose, but don’t just ignore the audience score because of that because there are some valid reasons for disliking this game.

The average: Gameplay, similar to the first one, it feels dated (very PS3 like) and while I can forgive ND going so conservative in Uncharted 4 because it was their first game on PS4, in this one it´s underwhelming to the point that some mechanics (like the "radar" where you can detect close enemies) just feels akward to use. The only innovation is a button to dodge enemies that paradoxily feels like a step backwards because it just makes the mele combat too easy reducing the challenge of some enemies.

The (very) bad: The story. Clearly, the story it´s at the core of the game, and after watching the ending the only world to describe it is pretentious. I won´t do spoilers but most of the plot feels convoluted and lacks originality, reducing it to a basuc and uninteresting conventional revenge tale. The motivations of the characters are pure clichés and all of them lack real character archs (to the point that once you reach the ending of the game, most of their decisions simply make no sense. On top of that, the overall treatment of the narrative theme ("revenge is bad) is treated on a very oversimplified and even childish way, and to compensate for this lack of real deepness, the story constantly looks for a dark and edgy tone, including lots of violence and deaths of characters for shock value every time the script reaches a dead point (which sadly is quite often) but paradoxically, since all this characters are for the most part poorly written, uninteresting and pretty much copy-pasted from many other zombie films/games we all have seen before, it´s hard to feel anything for them besides indifference. You can see the game is trying to overcompensate for the underwhelming writting, overrealiance on chichés and poor character work by constantly telling the player what he/she has to feel and think instead of showing a story that naturally leads the player to feel that way. Also, they had a terrible narrative idea for the second part of the story that makes the whole thing feel like a chore. Clearly, the good reviews praising the great story of this game are either a product of people falling for the trick of confusing edginess with good storytelling or just people that wanted to like this game no matter what given how good TLOU 1 was, either way time will put this game where it belongs, and it will be remembered for being nothing but a pretentious sequel (if remembered at all).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is just sad. I loved the first game, it was a beautifully crafted masterpiece that excelled on some levels with its storytelling and its ability to make you love the characters, despite their obvious faults. I want to say though from the off that I think Neil Druckmann is a good writer - he wrote the first one after all - and I don't mind the idea of being inclusive. Ellie being gay was never a problem with me and anybody else who played it. What I do have a problem with however is when its forced and unbelievable.

The Last of Us 2 picks up after the first game, and it's clear it's a nmore somber tone. A heavy burden hangs over Joel's head, and a heavy doubt over Ellie's. Both are slight tarnished by the first game, but despite this they make a life living in the community of Jacksonville.

Its feels great to see these two on screen again after 7 years, and I wont pretend I didn't know Joel's fate before stepping into this but man, his last scene's just feel disrespectful for the character and the fan base. Joel needed retribution no doubt, but it plays very out of character compared to how sharp he was in the first game. He walks into a trap that TLOU 1's Joel would have been very suspicious of, and it just feels like Neil wrote this in to progress the larger story of revenge at the price of believability.

I wont go into Abby as she is a deeply dull character with almost no charisma or redeeming factors, but the annoying thing is the game to me didn't 'sell' the reason she killed Joel like she did to me. Her story is sad in a paint by numbers kind of way, but it didn't justify the brutality of his murder.

Anyway I'm rambling - I think a 6 is fair based on the effort obviously put into this game. Its just a shame the story went 'The Walking Dead' route rather than focusing on humans versus the infected, and Ellie and Joel versus the tension created from the first.

This is my third time revising a score and review that nobody will likely ever read. I have now finished the game.

I'm giving it a 6 because I'm averaging the 2 scores on game-play and story. Normally I would rank game-play as far more important than story but because this game is so story-driven and full of cinematic scenes, I think it should be weighed 50-50.

Starting with the story. I'm giving it a 4. It should be less but the visuals in this game are stunning, so that helps. I found the interactive cut-scenes overabundant and tedious but I'll acknowledge that some of them did manage to play with my heartstrings a bit, which is something. The whole guitar theme was too much. Seemed like they were really milking that one line from the first game about Joel teaching Ellie to play guitar. It felt forced. So did the lovey-dovey stuff in the first half. This game tries hard to contrast joy and suffering by having a lot of happy scenes spliced between the brutal game-play. It failed to be profound and just ended up being tacky at times. The unskippable cut-scene of Ellie serenading her girlfriend to "take on me" almost made me quit the game. I've heard a lot of people complain about various parts of the game but nobody seemed to be as offended as me by the tacky stuff like that. Seems like there is a lot of stuff to dislike about this game even if you don't have the same disagreements about the main direction of the story.

Here's the thing though: I really didn't like Abbey and I didn't want to play as her for as long as I did. She grew on me a little bit by the end of her segment though I'll admit. But dude, why did they feel the need to show me her bewbs? That sex scene was almost as bad as the "take on me" scene, but at least it was short and skippable. What's worse is that by the end of Ellie's arc, I disliked her more than Abbey. They also made me dislike Tommy. I get that they were trying to give her character layers and nuance and all that, but she was just irredeemable. What Joel did in the first game was selfish, but understandable. Throwing everything to the wind to try and kill someone who has already had 2 opportunities now and every reason to kill you but didn't, that's arguably just lazy writing. Story wise, the game should have ended sooner than it did. Not because it would have been a more happy story, but because it would have been a better story. The last act was pretty fun game-play wise though, so I'll give it that.

The game-play gets an 8. There are a lot of really awesome moments but if you don't have the willpower to get to the later parts of the game, you'd be temped to say that it's all the same repetitive encounters. I was playing in survivor mode, which made some moments super fun and riveting, but with such low ammo and item supply, I got flashbacks to the Arkham games, where you're slowly creeping around waiting for enemies to turn their backs and trying to memorize their movements. I like the Arkham games, but they are repetitive and tedious. There were some parts where I almost stopped playing because it seemed like I was just doing the same stealth challenges over and over, but I'm glad I kept going because there were definitely more rewarding moments sprinkled throughout.

The level design is impeccable. I prefer the richly detailed linear design to the bland open world environments that are currently plaguing most AAA games. The only thing I didn't like was sometimes you'd unknowingly advance to the next area and be unable to turn back unless you had created a manual save, which means you can leave behind key items that might have been stored in a safe, which is an obsessive completionist's nightmare.

I want to finish by calling out the people who are saying this game is being "review bombed" and implying that there is something wrong with that. These people paid money, and they deserve an opinion, regardless of whether or not that opinion is level headed. If it's not a reasonable opinion, they are entitled to it. Especially if they paid full price for the game, which most of them did. Paying money for a disappointing product is as good a reason and motivator as any to leave a scathing review. There were definitely moments in this game that I felt people were trying to check off items on a diversity quota. It wasn't that bad, and it didn't bother me much, but I definitely got that vibe more than once. It made me feel bad for the devs who were putting their heart and soul into creating riveting game-play mechanics to think that their colleagues were sitting around a desk deciding which character should be having conflicting thoughts about their gender roles and how they could tie that into the already convoluted story.

So the average of 4 and 8 is 6. This game gets a 6 because overall, it's just ok, pretty good even, but not a must-play. They should consider a mode where you can just choose which action sequences you want to play, like a "challenge mode".

In terms of gameplay, there is nothing revolutionary here, I would say that it is simply boring, just such a development of the first part. I had the impression that the game is a bit long (by the plot) and was starting to tire me because in the second part of the game how it was presented to us was not very interesting to me. In my opinion, the potential that was hidden in it was wasted, maybe it's not wasted 7 years because the game outside the story and gameplay looks really good. But is graphics in games the most important? NO. That's why I don't understand why NaughtDog decided to lead the narrative like that. It could have been an outstanding game but unfortunately in my opinion it is at most good. The game does not deserve 0 but as well as 10. To sum up, the game did not meet my expectations, and I do not know where these 10/10 are from. Expand

Absolute technological marvel from the whole technical team at Naughty Dog. The level of quality and skill of craft is seen from beginning to end and I cannot praise this high enough. Even on the base PS4 you will be in awe as you explore the varied environments over the course of the game. The world comes alive from trash on the streets, clutter in the houses, light sources that react to everyday materials and nature, textures and meshes that mimic real life, foliage breaking through cracks of a collapsed society, and sound design that brings you into the brutal world you know from the first game.

Unfortunately, the experience is ruined by poor writing and story telling from the first death to the last, through hundreds of infected, humans, and even animals. The progress of story telling jumps all over the place, characters are dull and only introduced to throw into the meat grinder, and everything is misery for the sake of shock. Characters from all representations are introduced over the course of the game which is a great step forward for all groups, but actually sympathizing or caring about them will be a hard sell for many. You will be angry, frustrated, and wanting to rush through much of the story in attempts to bring back focus for another character.

The game reads like an attempt to be but falls on its head with a hard fail of an ending that is left open for more of the same in the future. Some major restructuring would have done this game some benefits and likely avoided how it is being absolutely **** on right no by the general majority. Is this saying that review bombing is good in this case? No. I want to warn people; The trailers cannot be trusted and have edited footage for pushing sales.

I cannot recommend this game. If you were a fan of the first just leave it as that. If you come into this you will feel like walking away by hour 3. You will have half of the 25 hours playtime (on average) in this state of mind. This is by-design and in no way to the benefit of the player.

The Last of Us was lightning in a bottle and will not happen again at the Naughty Dog studio under the current director and writers. Violence is bad and we all know it and this isn't introducing new concepts or becoming an instance classic. You are hurting your existing brand and will only be remembered for that.

Nowhere near as poor as people make it out to be, unfortunately why story is concerned they let the game down in massive ways the only redeemable quality scenes from the game are the introduction and flashbacks purely because they captured what made the original captivate people in the first game.

Some things in the story happen that make me think shouldn't have happened given the characters experiences from the first game, like Joel and Ellie. Also Abby just wasn't likeable at all, and I get that she did some horrible things but the game tries to make me sympathize with her and her struggles, kinda like Thanos or such, but she just didn't. And the ending itself left me feeling let down as well. I can say the gameplay feels better overall and improved upon, but when a game's driving force is the story and that doesn't live up to expectations and doesn't drive me emotionally like I was hoping. Overall Gameplay was improved and the clickers definitely look amazing same with the world as well, which I can also praise this game on, even with me playing on a PS4 Slim. I feel like a way to improve this game and give its moral message of forgiveness and the flaws in revenge would have been to have the player play as Abby from the beginning and have her struggle trying to find Joel and Ellie and get revenge and she meets Lev and befriends and takes care of him like an older sister and then have the cult come back and beat up Abby and take back Lev and then she meets Joel and Ellie and Joel finds out who she is and befriends her and take her to Tommy's settlement for medical help she finds out who Joel is and tries to kill him but Ellie stops her and they offer to help her get back Lev and after saving him and defeating the cult take them to Tommy's settlement and then have them heal up Lev and Joel and Abby finally have a confrontation/talk and Joel,Abby,Lev,and Ellie go on a journey to the Last remnants of the fireflies and Joel sees what he put her through and Abby realizes that Joel is genuinely upset and saddened at what he has done and Abby comes to realize and understand why he did what he did after hearing him out. On their way to the fireflies they find other settlements and see what has happened to some of the last remnants of humanity, Have Abby teaching Lev how to shot a gun, having Ellie and Joel rekindle their father daughter bond and have Ellie really talk to Joel about her feelings, Have Joel teaching Lev how to fish or fight, have Abby and Ellie become close and see each other as friends and they end up in battles with bandit groups like from the first game and When they finally make it to the fireflies and Joel reveals who he is and they try to kill him only to have Abby protest and forgive him. If a character has to die then they should have Ellie choosing to give up her life for a cure or vaccine. The game ends with Joel at Ellie's grave and then Joel walking away to his home where he is teaching Abby and Lev how to play the guitar This could be a nice but sad ending like the Tell Tales the walking dead season 1 made me feel. The other option would be the doctors having Ellie live through the surgery and have her with Dina showing Joel his grandchild and Joel teaching Lev how to play football or something and him teaching Abby how to play the guitar as a nice feel good ending. A DLC or third game after either of these endings could be Lev and Abby adjusting to life and visiting other settlements and having like a war between the settlements. This is honestly what I would have done people can like the game how it is and thats fine but I personally didn't like most of the story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has some great moments in gameplay but is let down by a story that has poor story telling and plot holes.

Visually the game is stunning, it's one of (if not) the best games on any console.

The gameplay is average, while stealth is a fantastic mechanic it was destroyed the abundance of quicktime events and lack of puzzles. The linear gameplay and lack of choice in this game is frustrating.

Most importantly the story was terrible, killing off a beloved character early based on choices they never would have made in the first game doesn't make any sense. You're then expected to play as a character that you have just witnessed kill a beloved character with no backstory at all. Without going into all the issues with the back and forth revenge plot at the end we end up with no pay off. No choice but to watch our supposed "protagonist" make stupid decisions and ultimately lose everything while the "antagonist" gets everything they ever wanted with nothing lost. The worst part for me is the betrayal Ellie has for Joel, a man who did everything to save his little girl only to be beaten down by said little girl at every possibility even in the final moments of the game....

Elimination isnt' always key, though. What hurts this direction are scripted events where enemies just won't die until something happens. It couldn't scream louder "hey kids, it's just a game!". We had that in TLOU1 too but today in our time it just destroys the illusion of an actual living world behind the screen. And speaking of kids, if you play the game, they should be sleeping. TLOU2 is brutal. And not the fun, DOOM way of brutal. It's miserable. People scream their lungs out if they die and our charakter looks often like a complete "nonstabil person" covered thick in blood which could make your stomach turn. Grafics, soundtrack and atmosphere are superb. 30FPS aren't a problem cause the frame rate never breaks in. What isn't superb though is the convoluted story. The elephant in the room. And I'm not talking about the "controversy", where you just role your eyes for a moment and move on. No the story is not working on a basic level. "Last Jedi Luke throws his Lightsaber away" kind of not working. In a franchise that is story driven this effects everything and it simply destroys. Even its own message. What also hurts is the constant back and forth via playable flashbacks but in the light of the non working plot this comes off rather as an inconvenience. It's 25 to 35h long depending of your playstyle but the last 10h or so you just want to get over with it cause of all the plot nonsense happening. Last time I felt that depressed and hollow was probably The Evil Within 2. Which I never ever touched against since. There we are now. Expand

Where the first game had heart, relatable emotions (both good and bad) and empathy, this one has hate, selfishness, narcissistic self-absorption and destructive anger - with most of it seeming bizarre and inexplicable.

Where the first game had believable motivations for the characters and understandable logic to their decisions, this one just makes them bow before the grindingly, artificially enforced overarching narrative. It doesn't matter if it fits their character or makes sense, if it needs to be done to keep things grim then it'll happen.

Make no mistake, these aren't characters so much as they are caricatures; they're really that distorted and cartoonish.

The same goes for the way the plot unfolds; it doesn't matter if it seems contrived or far-fetched or if it seems incredibly improbable - if it allows an easy path to create further trouble, it's gonna happen whether it's convincing or not.

It's like the author thinks the players are in their early teens, an odd thing considering the game is 18+ only.

Honestly, the vast majority of people in this game are damaged goods. They don't want happiness nor do they seek any way to resolve their problems other than violence. They cannot even disagree when simply discussing things without insults and bitterness. Is it something in the water?

I believe history teaches us that most people come together and put aside their differences in times of conflict, when the need for survival is greatest. In this post-apocalypse? People just double down and desire more suffering. It's crazy. More importantly though, it's lazy, shallow and I didn't find it in anyway convincing.

So, the game supposedly wants me to feel emotions, it's supposed to be the main draw but I simply couldn't, not after the first 5 hours. Most of these people are hopeless, a lost cause. They're lemmings and all I could do was watch as they pointlessly flail about, fighting over each other to reach the cliff edge.

Possibly the most laughable decision is to create a character that kills a beloved one from the first game and then force you to play as that character WITHOUT any backstory until later. I'm assuming they did that to try and get you to like/understand them but that's a colossal task that requires a skill waaaaay beyond the person who wrote this.

It's a ridiculous thing to do. By the time I found out more, I already had gotten used to hating the character completely and simply didn't care. They should have made this whole game about them and then brought them into contact with the characters that we know in a third game.

And the ending? Good grief. I'm guessing it was supposed to be thought provoking and meaningful but it was obvious that it was going to be one of the options they went for. The way it happens though is just bland and without any discernible motivation. There is no clue that I can see as to why Ellie would choose what she did, especially since she goes out of her way from an especially safe and comforting place, long after emotions would have died down, to get to that point.

It's just another example of a character choosing to do something 'just because'. Presumably because the writer got lost in his own world and thought it MUST be an amazing idea but we've seen endings like this many times and done much better. Like I said before, do they not know that mature, older people might play this? The game has literally nothing new to say, no believable means of delivery and no convincing reason for the ending, despite the fact that their are at least 3-5 different outcomes that would have had more impact, especially if player choice was allowed.

This game COULD have had me reeling from certain events, if I was actually a participant but I certainly didn't have the the ability to change/direct anything as the story is linear and involves no decision making or interesting choice/consequence systems - in a high budget game in 2020 no less.....:S

Tehcnically (graphics and sound) the game is outstanding. The combat is fairly dated and nothing new, a 7/10. The skill trees are pointless. There's too much wandering about here and there and it spoils the pacing. The new monsters are mostly enjoyable. The last act is bloated.

In case you didn't guess, I disliked the game. It's not canon to me. Just remember the first game and ignore this. Look it up on youtube if you're really curious.

Why is there a society that communicates via loud whistles when the infecteds main sense is hearing? Gameplay could've been cut by like 5 hours, some of it seems to drag for a long time. Some of the dialog is awkward and unnatural, and it feels like it was written by the writers of Riverdale. The game should've started with the flashback scenes, it felt out of place with them thrown into the middle of the game. It felt like the infected where an after thought in this game and weren't really a focus at all, and the main big guy you fight felt like something from left 4 dead, not tlou. The gameplay seemed a bit outdated. Overall its obvious the game was written by a different team, it focused less on the natural aspects to their original infected design and it isn't as immersive as the original game.

As for the things done well: I liked the additional puzzles, and breaking glass. The graphics are very well done. The flashback scenes felt like they were written by someone else entirely, and I very much enjoyed them even if they seemed misplaced in the game. The new weapon slection is pretty cool. This game does not deserve any more than a 6, because of how damn unsatisfying it is to play. Anyone who gives it a 10 is a sellout.

First off, notice the number at the end of the title? That means it's a sequel. A sequel to a game with one of the best narratives in the past decade. I'm not going to spend too much time on the original, but what made that game great was how the gameplay tied in with the narrative. Everything Joel (the player) did was thematically linked to the overall narrative of a story of a father who has already lost one child and is tasked to protect another.

Full disclosure - the gameplay of the first did not particularly stand out to me, but the narrative was strong enough to carry it home. And that is crucial, because the sequel absolutely failed in that regard.

in TLoU2, you control Ellie. No big deal, already done that in Left Behind. I'm going to ignore her actions in this game simply because she's 19. I'm going to give that a pass because you can attribute most of her utter idiocy to teen angst, although even that becomes really hard later on.

However, you do gain control of another character. This character is, without a doubt, the most repulsive character in any video game, and you are forced into the perspective of this character in order to humanise them. I do not mean repulsive in way most detractors would try to frame it - hateful, negative and bigoted. I mean repulsive in the context of a player of a sequel to The Last of Us. Even if this character was Nelson Mandela himself, the actions of him/her would immediately vilify them to the player, with no hope of redemption. It's like if Locke actually killed Master Chief in Halo 5.

While I understand that, in the post apocalyptic world of TLoU, things don't make sense all the time, it does not mean the people living in it have no common sense. Unfortunately, nothing makes sense to the player as the actions of the protagonists in TLoU2 do not resonate like they did in TLoU. For example, if in TLoU you had a choice to save Ellie or leave her with the Fireflies, which would you choose? If Joel actually left her, would that make any sense at all? That would immediately ruin the game and its reputation because of how disconnected that would be to the narrative of the game.

in TLoU2, you are forced into that disconnect, and that cognitive dissonance has genuinely made the game unbearable at times. As a result, the laughable story completely failed to provide a compelling reason to play the game, and this is not helped by the aforementioned average gameplay.

I can make a case for the game being 6/10. It's not broken, it's perfectly playable with excellent graphics and average gameplay. Were it a standalone game, I can see it being a 7/10. However, It definitely loses points for being a sequel. The biggest kicker is when you finally finish the game. You do not look back and think 'I had a good time', because it felt like a slog with no payoff. One can argue it was to drive home the moral of the story. If that is the case, I cannot possibly give the game more any than a 6 because of how hypocritical and self-indulgent Naughty Dog is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Was a big fan of the first game, and was highly anticipating this one. The visuals and soundtrack are top notch, Gustavo never disappoints. The rest of the game, however, does.

Pretty trees and music can only do so much when games are about storytelling and gameplay. The combat is engaging and entertaining. It's very similar to the first game, and it got a little bit tedious at times; not to mention some of the NPCs have rather clunky AI. Overall, i thought it was solid, and i liked being able to have more options. I only wish they included new combat styles, and the dodge felt a bit bad. The story is what really brought this game down in my opinion, though.

The things I dislike the most about the direction the story went was the fact that so many characters felt, well, out of character. There were some parts i really enjoyed; the flashbacks, and Ellie's quips with Dina. However, Ellie, and Tommy (later on) seemed like an entirely different person with some decisions they made. The way this game treated certain minorities hurts rather than help. it felt they were so focused on including representation that they did it horribly. Joel's death feels unreal, and I know it was meant to feel real and harsh, but it made it impossible for me to like Abby in any way. I think it would feel better if Joel went out protecting Ellie from Abby even. The sex scene was absolutely unneeded, honestly.

The ending felt worthless, everything Ellie did to get to that point and she changes her mind? It felt like everything done in the game was for nothing. Even having the option to kill Abby or spare her would make it infinitely more satisfying for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hubris. It's hubris really. ND and especially Neil Druckmann and his writers dropped the ball on this one. The game is a technical masterpiece, graphics and gameplay are phenomenal. However the story is messy, and crumbles under the weight of the aforementioned hubris. ND genuinely expects you to see this story from all sides, even sympathise with Abby and her her motives for revenge.
Oh, and Abby just happens to find the one person in the world she's looking for while being chased by a horde of infected and then just so happens to convince Joel and Tommy to come back to her site where she has people. As if survivors like Joel or Tommy would ever trust random woman with a gun to take them back to a group of strangers.
Again, it's hubris. ND's unrestricted ego has really hurt this games potential because it must be said from a technical standpoint it's a masterpiece. These 0 ratings need to be removed because its obviously not from people who have played the game and just want to trash it. Narratively, this was a dud, it happens. Every game company misses the mark sometimes it just hurts that much more when one as talented as ND does it. I loved Joel's character, I loved his motives and his personal redemptive arc. His closure and new parental relationship with this girl called Ellie who saved him as much as he did her.
TLOU2 feels like it tries to undermine what Joel did in one and almost paint him as a villain, completely ignoring at every turn that the fireflies were going to murder a teenage girl just for hope at a cure. That price was to high for Joel because he'd already lost one daughter, he couldn't lose another and did what any parent would. He saved her.
There is definitely an SJW agenda in this game (mostly female characters in the forefront) and this is purely down to Neil Druckmann and his SJW liberal views as well as his affiliation with the human trashcan that is Anita Sarkesian. Honestly, if I were ND I'd look at getting a new director in for the next IP.

I absolutely love the first last of us. it is probably my favorite game ever. but part 2 has nothing to do with the first game. sure there are some flashbacks but the plot is a revenge story. not a story about the ending of the last game. the best part about part 1 was the relationship between Joel and Ellie. but part 2 removed that. and the characters don’t really act like they did in the first game either. i liked the game but only when there is meaningful cutscenes or gameplay. and the combat gets really repetitive through out the game. the graphics are absolutely gorgeous. but this game isn’t a masterpiece, it’s a good game. but it is nothing compared to part 1. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, the problem with this game is not some kind of "political agenda". That is nonsense, the game's narrative does take a stance on several issues, but does not focus on pushing those opinions.

In my opinion, the reason this game is immensely disappointing is its story:
Alright, so Joel committed some pretty despicable deeds, and now he faces reckoning. He is murdered, and then Ellie seeks for revenge. So far, awesome plot.

But then half of the game is played from the antagonists perspective! Excuse me, why should I care about ms Trenbolone's point of view? The part of the game where you basically have to re-play the events up to Joel's clubbing is just boring and uninteresting. And when the story is boring, this game has nothing to offer. It's just the usual naughty dog gameplay, nothing too exciting.

Even if you give the game the benefit of the doubt, and look past the aforementioned part, the story continues to be sh*t until the end, even from Ellie's perspective. She massacres scores of people without hesitation, but then has a last moment epiphany and decides to spare the only person she actually had set out to kill. What?

And if all of that was not enough, for me personally the worst thing about this game was that it did not answer, or even develop, issues raised by the first game, the main one being Ellie's immunity, and the hope for a cure. Was that not the cause for all of the events of the first game? Why did we forget about it?

Definitely worth buying on sale though, it's an easy platinum, and very impressively violent.

Finally, I have to point out some of the most glaringly dumb plot details that made zero sense:
    1. Why did Joel and Tommy trust Debbie? I know many have pointed this out, and perhaps it could be argued that they let their guard down because they had just had a near-death experience, but still.
    2. Ellie brutally murders dozens of people without flinching. In one particular encounter however, after driving her blade into the throat of a woman, she is absolutely shocked upon discovering that her victim was pregnant.

To close on a positive note, I did notice a detail that I highly appreciated, and would like to point it out: Debbie mauls Joel's head with a 9-iron, which is a sensible choice of club for the task. A longer iron would not be as efficient because the shaft would bend more at impact, thereby decreasing the hit's force.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Going through this game was like an emotional roller coaster for me. As a long time fan of the original Last of Us game, I was excited to delve into the game. I was without a doubt hyped. The shocking death of Joel was something that got me angry, even making me want to put the game down. But as I kept playing I realized why Naughty Dog decided to do this bold move. Sure Joel died in a very bad manner but the point of this was to make us relate to Ellie more than ever. The whole theme of this plot is vengeance and the death of Joel not only instilled the feeling of revenge in Ellie but also in the hearts of many long time fans. Playing as Ellie on her quest to avenge Joel by bringing his killers to justice was one of the most gruesome and violent things I have had to see. But I really enjoyed it. The combat, stealth, movement and exploration feeling absolutely amazing and have set the bar for how sequels should build on what they had in their original game. During the beginning while I was playing as Ellie I really believed that this was going to be one of my favorite games ever, going as far as saying that it was better than the original at this point. But all these thoughts began to escape my mind as the game forced me to play as Abby, Joel’s killer, for a very elongated time of the game. WE THE FANS DO NOT WANT TO PLAY AS ABBY NAUGHTY DOG. Playing as Abby and seeing how evil she really was made me slowly begin to dislike the game and get more angry at Naughty Dog for making such a ridiculous decision, but if I’m being completely honest, that was pretty much my biggest gripe with The Last of Us Part 2. I enjoyed every other moment I experienced whilst playing as Ellie. Naughty Dog had the potential to make this game one of the best of all time. There were glimpses of this in the flashbacks Ellie had with Joel and in the sections of Seattle where you played as Ellie, but ultimately what kept this game from pleasing fans and becoming one of the greats for many people’s eyes was its writing and story decisions. Playing as Abby dropped my score down because it was something that I did not enjoy at all. We see all the evil things Abby does but the game tries to sway our view of her by showing how she interacts with her friends. This comes of as infuriating to me and is a result of bad writing. It’s hard for me to decided whether or not to recommend this game to a long time Last of Us fan because of how high it’s highs are and how low it’s lows get. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ll start of with the good things about the game. The Graphics are one of the most beautiful things to exist in Gaming History. The Gameplay is just as good as the graphics in my opinion. Ellie’s athleticism’s is key to making the game fresh and interesting. Also the new enemies brought into the game make the game more exciting and terrifying like the Shambler, who can cut off escape routes forcing the player into a one on one combat in order to progress to the next location or the return of the Stalkers who are more scarier than ever with their smart moving, hiding from Ellie’s listening ability and also their pack mentality. Also worth noting is that the game has the most brutal combat and shooting animations I’ve ever seen in a game. Now I will come to the bad part. The story telling is the biggest let down in gaming history. We’ve waited for this sequel for over 6 years ever since the first game came out in 2013 and this is what we got. Everything at the start of the game is perfect, but as soon as it came to the part where Joel was brutally murdered in one of the most disrespectful ways possible, it all went downhill from there. I don’t understand how Joel went from being smart in the first game to just plain retarded in the second by walking right into an ambush. Maybe if Abby saved Joel instead of Joel saving Abby, it would’ve made more sense for Joel to let down his guard down because of his thankfulness towards Abby for saving his life. And then there is Abby who’s even more dumber than Joel by leaving Ellie and Tommy alive. Tommy already notified the group by telling them that he is Joel’s brother and Ellie’s reaction towards Joel being beaten to death with a club is also a big hint, also notifying that Ellie cares about Joel. Remember in the first game when Joel killed Marlene because he knew, if he had left her alive, she would just come after them. That made sense but Abbys decision didn’t. Now that I’ve said what had to be said, lets progress further in the game. Ellie ends up knowing what happened in the Firefly hospital and is mad at Joel. This game could’ve been about forgiveness instead of revenge. Ellie trying to forgive Joel for what he has selfishly done to mankind, but instead Naughtydog killed of Joel and then explained her actions later on in the game. It would’ve been better for her backstory to get explained first, for everything to then lead up to her revenge. We could’ve then understand her reasons for her revenge and the killing of Joel would’ve made more sense. Naughtydog has the chance to make this game all about forgiveness but they blew it. It feels like Neil Druckmann never wrote this game and was written by another writer that had no clue what happened in the first game. But what angers me the most but also makes sense a little bit is at the end of the game. Ellie had the chance to kill Abby... She could’ve gotten REVENGE which was the main theme of this game but in the end she didn’t? The only possible way I could think about Ellie not deciding to kill Abby after what she did was because the cycle of revenge would just go in a circle. If she killed Abby, the cycle would just continue with Lev trying to kill Ellie that is if Ellie left him alive. So that I could understand and the last part of the ending where Ellie returns back home just to see her now family gone and her packing out Joel’s guitar and being unable to play it due to Abby biting off her two fingers all leads up to her leaving the house is a big part to the story. She’s leaving her memory of Joel in the past. Then it just cuts to her leaving the farmhouse and Joel’s guitar just sitting there. I really wish Naughtydog could’ve cut the scene to Ellie coming back to Jackson and also lying like Joel did, by saying she killed abby. Then it cuts to a black screen and the game ends. I really wish Naughtydog could’ve made this story about forgiveness. I hope TLOU gets a third part where we play both Lev and JJ and they both develop a friendship. Expand

Characters aren't fleshed out at all and then are killed at a moments notice not giving the audience any time to breath or let the impact sink in.

How is it I can go back and watch Sarah's death multiple times and still find myself shedding a tear. I was more invested in her 10 minutes of screen time then anyone in this 25 hour game.

Visually the game is great but sadly that's it. Gunplay/Combat is pretty basic and the stealth element isn't anything to write home about.

I had the most fun playing as Abby in the 2nd half of the game as it was something new and interesting and it actually felt like I was playing a TLOU sequel. I'd have been happy if they had done away if the Ellie/Joel subplot all together. The pacing was far too jarring.

Before playing as Abby I was rating this game a 3/10 but now I've gone to a 5/10.

Also cut the gameplay time down 26 hours is far too long for no story and repetitive gameplay gunplay -> explore -> gunplay -> explore

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As an avid fan of the original The Last of Us, I was really looking forward to playing Part 2.
I really liked the direction of the first game, the character development, the whole plot - it’s one of the finest examples in video gaming history. I wish I could forget it, just to experience it all over again.

However, I missed this unique experience when playing The Last of Us Part 2. I remember it as bleak, sad, empty, extremely violent most of the time, with only very few moments of joy. If you’re into that, this game may be for you.

It is is one of the most beautiful looking games available on PS4, with top-notch acting, soundtrack and level design. I'd wish the whole gaming experience was this good either.
Some parts of the gameplay are indeed more elegant compared to the original, but haven't really been improved. Gameplay still feels like the first one, this time with less environment puzzles – here it's just constant killing. I’m fine with violence in games. But I've got no wish to play a dark edgy sequel with one revenge story, that thinks it's being cleverer – and yet comes across as a misery simulator. It makes Ellie into a character that’s one of the worst in video game history.

I always choose story & characters over everything else. Compared to the strong cast of characters from the first game, the new characters are very bland. At some point you’re forced to play as Abby for 10 hours, who I couldn't relate to – or any of her friends. Even if I didn’t agree with her actions, it’s hard not to understand them to a degree. But the whole plot was atrocious and I’m not even complaining about the fact Abbe killed Joel (her father’s killer). I’m fine with that. But why did she kill Joel, after hunting him down for years – but let the killer of her friend and lover go? The game is a petty revenge story but in the end it isn’t. The story just goes nowhere. What did I even play for 25 hours? For me It wasn't a compelling story.

The playable flashbacks of the good old times were probably my favourite part of this game.
Because TLOU for me is and always will be about the relationship of Ellie and Joel. It's what made the first game special.
Of course I was happy when the trailers came out, that teased another Ellie / Joel adventure. Turns out, it was a fraud. Joel wasn't even supposed to play a larger part in this one, they just swapped his character model. I'd call this false advertising and to me it kind of feels like "No Man’s Sky“ all over again. I guess you can't trust anyone these days and I'll think twice before I’ll buy a Naughty Dog game ever again. And that makes me sad to write, because I loved this studio back in the older days.

Overall, the feeling Part II left, is the same after watching Game of Thrones S8. Disbelief. Disappointment. I feel sorry for the developers who have been working so hard on this game for almost a decade. Naughty Dog’s talented enough to make a wonderful and worthy sequel. They just didn’t.

They should of either given him a good death or changed the story so that he gets captured by them instead of killed and Ellie goes out to find him Expand

Game play is expanded on from the 1st game and visuals are stunningly beautiful. The writing suffers immensely and often doesn't makes sense when it comes to the decision making of main characters.

Unfortunately, it is this very aspect that is so poorly executed in this sequel. Although the narrative attempts to weave together a cohesive story predicated of themes such as revenge, and consequence- this is often undermined by characters' uncharacteristic behaviour and excessively violent choices. This is because these actions seem to be intended to generate shock value more than communicate a point. This poor choice of storytelling is only compounded by the fact that the player, themselves, cannot actively choose their actions in this game. Therefore, forcing players to endure a game that seems to take joy in harming players favourite characters seems insanely unnecessary and effectively acts more as torture porn than it does effective story telling. It is obvious that the game seems to critique the consequence free violence that occurs in so many video games, but by removing player agency any such commentary isn't as impactful to the player and only makes them feel condescendingly lectured throughout the storytelling experience. This wound is only rubbed in with additional salt when you are forced to embody an unrelatable character during game play, which the game makes irredeemable and unsympathetic within the first 3 hours of the game. The ending is also exceptionally unsatisfactory, which leaves you pondering what the point of the entire game and its character motivations were about. I understand this was intentional, but if you loved the Last Of Us, as I did, the final scene with the guitar only serves to undermine the memory of those characters I loved even further. Ultimately, to Naughty Dog's credit, aside from the story- by every measure this game has improved upon its predecessor, with better exploration, graphics, combat, stealth (although I don't think it’s as great as the other reviewers have made it out to be, it's still good and I can definitely see why people would enjoy it), and sound there's a lot here for many gamers to still enjoy. So, if you're someone who enjoys having their expectations subverted (The Last Jedi style), then you'll love it like so many in this community has done. But as someone who loves the characters from the first game- this game does such a disservice to them that it has left a permanent bad taste in my mouth and for that I cannot personally recommend it. Not a big fan of how naughty dog decided to go along with the story, but the game looks great, has fun combat and is not as linear as the first one. Though the first one is much better.

Hmmm… strange how Druckmann would decide to kill off fan favourite Joel. IDK how he could not have known this would have been a terrible choice in direction. He’s effectively killed the franchise and his career.

With only a few problems, the gameplay is a solid 7-8. However, this is not a gameplay based game like Mario or Apex. This is a Narrative driven game and the quality of the narrative and story must be critiqued at a higher standard. Wow are there major plot holes in this game. There is very little back story on characters and little character development for the new characters. Key major events happen but are narratively justified quickly improperly. Don't get me wrong, the game and story is not bad, it's just average. (With high highs and lows lows along your journey) Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
