This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have finished the Last of Us Part II and I must say this really got me. The mechanics, the graphics and the sound are great. The way you interact with the environment makes tlou2 a very realistic and immersive experience of its own kind. However the main aspect of games like the last of us, the story, is really bothering me. The story pretty much starts off with Joel’s death. His death had a very powerful effect on me and most people probably. This death had such a powerful effect not only because of the fact that it is Joel who they killed, it’s also the way he got murdered which bothered me a lot. Later the character who killed him, Abby, was also the one we played for half of the game. This part of the game was a way to make us sympathize with Abby, but it didn’t really let me do that. For the entirety of her part, I couldn’t care less for what Abby experienced, let alone even having any kind of sympathy for this character. It was the opposite: Every time I died as Abby, I got happy, I cheered. The Ellie part compensates until a certain point for the failure of the Abby part, but only until Ellie becomes the one who is the most lost. The ending is the ultimate height of futility. What is it even worth trying and fighting for? That’s a question not only Ellie has to ask herself, but also the player. What is even the point in playing if every action leads to more loss and loneliness? Perhaps this is what Naughty Dog tried to accomplish and if it were the case, then perhaps they had the wrong goal in mind. Expand

Love the gameplay and graphics, it’s truly beautiful and has very smooth gameplay but not a fan of the story, it drags on and it’s a complete mess!

As for the narrative is a 5 at most, the rhythm is cut every 5 hours of play, NO ONE can empathize with ABBY, who has no other function than to kill Joel and repel Ellie's attacks ... They also destroy one of the most endearing characters (Ellie) leaving her alone (her greatest fear) and without 2 fingers, she cannot even play the guitar that was her escape route ... Very disappointed with a game that promised a lot and that the narrative destroyed it. Expand

The mechanics feel good and the crafting feels better then ever however I feel that crafting cost way too materials you need to have I only managed to craft very few things in the very long run time and it was very annoying having to start again with different weapons

Now the game play gun mechanics are smooth its so satisfying to beat a solider to death with a crowbar and blow off someone head with a shotgun BUT the encounters are very repetitive and the design is very confusing and aggravating. The infected are just terrifying I always try my best to be stealthy around them. One last thing is that I think that it was very idiotic for Naughty Dog to not give us a full auto gun until the end of the game AGAIN but overall I liked the game-play and It is much better then the first one
    Overall 8/10.

Now The Story........ buckle up because I have a lot to say about this

In my completely Bias opinion the story is a complete DISASTER insulting the first one everyone adored with all their hearts while giving us character I COULD NOT GIVE A **** ABOUT

where do I start where do I even begin I know lets start of with the greatest insult Joel and how he is handled instead of giving him an emotional send off like he deserves we decide to just ****ing beat him to death with a ****ing GOLF CLUB like not even just shooting him and being done And I will talk about the person who did this later

The main reason this game failed was of the structure and how embarrassing it is who taught it would be a good idea to play halfway of the game as Ellie and then decide to play the next half as Abby like are you ****ing kidding me

we are going to talk about Ellie my favorite character of this **** while she is nothing like she used to be she definitely has the best ark of her slowly losing her herself the deeper she goes into to Seattle and if the story put that as there main focus this review would of been a lot different BUT when you have TEN HOURS of ****ing dumb ass Abby **** you really begin to lose interest in well...... just about everything still...... of the game saves it from being the worst game story I have ever experienced.

Now...... we come to Abby the bane of my existence now before we come to tearing her apart I will give naughty dog points for even trying to get you to sympathize with her but they did it so badly and the main reason is that Abby never shows any remorse for killing Joel so how are we supposed to sympathize with her if she is never sorry for her bad action and yeah you could say " well Joel stopped the fireflies from creating a cure to save Ellie and never felt sorry " the big difference is that Joel killed out of love Abby did for Revenge and once again you could say "Ellie killed for revenge just as Abby did" however Ellie does show remorse for the people she killed and Abby didn't and her story is so boring but that not the character Abby's fault its something far worse...........

Now we come to the side character and they are terrible Dina is okay I guess but she does not interest me more then a horse buddy I can't tell you a damn thing about Jesse because he is not given enough character development, I really thought Tommy would be a huge part of the game but if you removed him there would be no difference, Lev and Yara are the worst characters I have ever played in a video game they are so boring and annoying constantly wasting your time one of them is a tranny imagine being in a Zombie apocalypse and being like "I'm gonna just change my gender" I never forgot Sam and Henry, Bill, Tess and Tommy I forgot most of these ****ers names the minute I finished this embarrassment

The tone of this game is just mindless depression I always felt so disappointed while playing it felt like a Abby entire story line feels like a way to long walking dead episode while the first half i wasn't sure what to make of it the second half I just felt dead just wanting to finish the finish truly just disappointed

Some people think it a masterpiece some people think it strayed to far from its roots, me... I just think its **** I would of liked a depressing story but they ruined it with bad structure characters (apart from Ellie)
and so many plot holes the ending is insulting and dumb and all of you high and mighty **** who think people who don't like the game are just Bigots you are IDIOTS naughty dog has a lot of work to do to save this franchise

lowest ranking was in Abby Seattle day 1 was a two and the highest was in Ellie's Seattle day 2 was a seven but overall 4/10 And that being generous

overall the game is good. I can't hate the game despite the ending. It just shows how realistic the game is in a post-apocalyptic setting because of moral gray areas, specifically ellie's decision on the last part and how she lost everything and had to get over it.

I finished this game twice. I can't stand the story. I absolutely loved the first one, and as a sequel, this is horrible. The pacing is very rough, the characters are uninteresting, the gameplay doesn't improve much on the original. This is a massive disappointment....

People’s biggest problem with this game is the storyline. The story isn’t the greatest, and it can seem pretty inconsistent in terms of character development. None of the characters are really memorable or even likable. This is a big issue when compared to the first game’s amazing story and characters. The gameplay is pretty linear, although there are some more “open” moments in the game where you can explore and learn more about the world’s history. Overall, the story and characters are rather lame and forgettable. The gameplay is pretty consistent the whole game. There’s a cutscene, then some walking around/exploring, then an action/stealth section where you have to fight (or sneak) to the next part of the level, and repeat. I can see how people can find this repetitive and monotonous. HOWEVER, this game has some of the BEST action moments in any video game. The combat and gunplay is so fun and it allows the player to be creative in how they take our their enemies. The enemy AI is amazing, the way they interact with one another to find and kill you is some of the best in any action game. The action/combat sequences in this game make you feel like you’re playing an action movie. The gore, graphics, and sounds are all very realistic. The replay value is actually pretty high because there’re many different ways you can get through the combat sections. Also, the settings in the game are pretty cool too. It allows you to customize your gameplay experience in ways I’ve never experienced in a video game. Overall, this game is GOOD. It’s not the best, or even Game of the Year material. The first game is far superior (although Part II has better AI and combat). The fact that the story isn’t great hurts this game a lot because it’s a very story-driven game. You can’t control the outcomes of anything you’re merely playing through the story... and it’s not a good one. If I were to rate this game on the action and combat moments alone it would be a 10/10. However, with the weak storyline and characters this game is a solid 7/10. Expand

The gameplay - It’s also pretty good but it can be bad at some times.
The Characters - Designs are really good, there is a lot of detail on the Character designs.
Now let’s talk about what really went downhill to this game. I really enjoyed the game at the start. I know that Joel dying is terrible but I already saw it coming before all the leaks. The thing that pisses me off the most, is the ending. The fact that Ellie went through so much, had to kill so many people, even killed a baby, traveled so much, had some of her friends killed in the journey by Abby, and finally at the end, Ellie has her hands on Abby. She now could easily kill Abby. She was about to drown Abby. But guess what. She decides to let her go. FOR WHATEVER REASON..... LIKE LITERALLY YOU WENT THROUGH SO MUCH SH*T JUST TO NOT KILL JOEL’S KILLER AT THE END? Neil Druckmann, I thought this game was about revenge? Or is it not? So disappointed.

The gameplay is fun enough, and while it has a few new additions, nothing is fundamentally different from the first installment. Not really a whole lot to say other than that; unfortunately, the new enemies, like shamblers, don't present a huge challenge. Wish there were more dog sequences, rat king fight was kinda cool looking but boiled down to "shoot the bullet sponge till he dies." Some combat and exploration sequences felt a bit too long and drawn out with the more open environments, especially with little to no real dialogue.

The game's presentation is incredible. They push the PS4 hardware to the absolute limit, and give the 9th gen console a hefty load. The textures look incredible, the motion capture is well done, the facial movements, especially during combat, are visceral, and the violence looks absolutely brutal and disgusting. It was a great improvement upon the visuals of the first game. Settings look incredible, and you can tell how many man hours went into making this game look like a cinematic masterpiece.

The soundtrack from Santaolalla was fairly good; I enjoyed the atmospheric and minimalist textures he employs in complimenting the hollowness, the utter emptiness of a post apocalyptic united states.

Accessibility options are worth noting as well, as the features covered a lot more ground that accessibility in any previous game had, with all kinds of filters for colorblindness of different kinds, visual cues, even audio cues to make the game half playable for a blind person. This should be the industry standard for accessibility.

The story, however, is where the seams come apart, and the reason I rate the game 6 (though it's really more of a 6.5) is because of the fact that it is indeed a story driven game. It's a cautionary tale that shows us that graphics and presentation really aren't everything. The story is something that reads as if it was not very well thought out. It doesn't have a satisfying structure to it, and is full of conveniences, contrivances, and gaffes that break the immersion. Of course, the first game had its story foibles as well, especially with respect to how modern medicine works, but I'm not reviewing part 1.

To begin, the story eschews a traditional story structure. This has been done successfully in the past, but it is difficult to pull off, and it hurt the story more than it helped. Joel dies as the inciting event of the game, Ellie sets off on the warpath, and the narrative tension appropriately rises and accompanies Ellie's in game progression; she acquires new skills and weapons as she comes closer to finding Abby and kills her friends. The game reaches a climax confrontation, but then annihilates itself by cutting to black and returning to several days earlier, but now as Abby. This decision completely destroys the stakes, disincentivizes player investment, and restarts character progression, which annoyed me quite a bit, having to start the character progression over with less health, fewer skills, and only two weapons. The game gets back to the climax in a very roundabout way, introducing a medical fetch quest for relieving compartment syndrome via amputation (another medical gaffe) that I found myself not really invested in, as it had little to do with the main narrative. Yara and Lev were potentially good and interesting characters that didn't feel very well fleshed out or developed over the game's second act. The climax happens, Abby beats Ellie down, and leaves her there. That seemed like a fine place to end, but the game overstays its welcome with a coda where you play as Ellie once again, giving the game a third climax. By the end, the oddball story structure left me somewhat unsatisfied, as did the (dare I say) somewhat milquetoast ending.

Though the story structure is the game's main story weakness, several other items stand out. The opening of the game very clearly takes a moral position of Joel being "bad," and that he's receiving consequences for the hospital massacre. This seems somewhat nonsensical, given the circumstances in part 1 that left him with no alternatives, and fails to consider the fireflies as anything other than world savior do-gooders, rather than flawed and complex human beings. The game teases out this notion when Abby begins to experience regret for dragging her friends into the fray and getting them killed, but never meaningfully reconciling with the fact that, perhaps the Fireflies weren't perfect people, and were no better than Joel, or that they intended to kill him.

The story is also littered with nagging contrivances: characters get Deus Ex rescued over and over, and they make nonsensical decisions for the purpose of advancing the game's moralistic paradigm. Abby and Co, for example, spare Ellie because "uh oh, revenge is actually bad" rather than killing her to cover tracks, or Ellie deciding to free abby from the stake at the game's ending.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't get why so much hate and 0 scores. I get it why people are angry if they played TLOU 1, but still, this is a very decent game.

In my opinion, this game is beautifully crafted. Amazing world, nature, and locations, it's hard to imagine a better visualization of this universe. I rarely pay attention to the soundtrack and sound effects, but in this game, they are very well done.

Ok, but not everything is perfect. I definitely can agree with many other players, that Ellie and Joel's plot has been ruined. I loved the story from TLOU 1. But killing Joel at the beginning wasn't the best decision. Anyway, I think I could deal with his death, but the much worse thing they did is this sick revenge story of Ellie... that doesn't fit her personality.

In the beginning, I was feeling the same as Ellie - we should rip off Abby's head, but at that moment I was thinking Ellie doesn't know what Joel did to her father. But later it turned out she did know, which made the whole vendetta sick. Joel killed with cold blood Abby's father. Ellie should at least try to understand her motives and feeling. Instead of dealing with it or at least trying, she decided to be a sick lesbian-rambo-psycho killing tons of fully-armed enemies, sacrificing her friends and relationship, just to chase the rabbit which in the end she didn't even kill. Not mentioning how unrealistic is that a single girl can kill whole armies without any troubles.

The plot is unnatural, she confronted Abby twice, two times Abby speared her life (and Dina's), and Ellie didn't even think for a second that maybe it's enough, that maybe Abby felt the same as she's feeling now. That they are equal now, both "dads" are dead. Instead, she behaves like a psycho, she can't even sleep without killing people.

And LGBT... I have nothing against LGBT when it's pictured naturally. Not like a forced bullet-list: lesbian checked, two lesbians having baby checked, bi-girl checked, interracial relationship checked, transgender kid checked, male-like girl checked. Come on... even Nextflix is not going that far in a single production...

Ok, that's enough about the plot. The second bad thing is the gameplay (at least part of it). The first 10 hours were super boring, all the time the same: we need to go somewhere, oh nooo the path is blocked let's try to go through this building, loot loot loot, oh noooo spores, sneaking/killing, cutscene, repeat for 10h without many variations. Mostly the same type of enemies, attacks, etc.

That's why to me Abby's plot was more interesting. It was more varied, more interesting locations, crazy people in the woods, burning villages, walking in the clouds, etc. Reasonable psychological transformation.

Combining all together, I think this game is a decent 7/10. The mechanic could be better, the locations could be more interesting and the plot could be better written. Definitely not a 0-score game even if you don't like the plot because of the emotional bond with TLOU 1.

It's sad that opposing opinions cannot be respected from the fans, and the creator, of this game. Neil Druckmann is a fool for attacking people who had an opposing opinion of the game.

This game had too much to live up to. It was gripping at the beginning, but the story felt artificial and uninteresting, unlike the first where I was fully engrossed. There is lots of fun gameplay but it starts to drag its feet as you run around pointlessly, as a character whom you aren't connected to in the same way as the main protagonist. After getting half way through, I wondered why it had not ended yet. Had this game been half as long it would have a higher rating.

Great gameplay and a technical masterpiece. But the story is wholely unsatisfying and poorly written. The second half of the game will make you want to stop playing. Combined with the false advertising of ND with the misleading trailers before release, makes this game average at best. Worth a play at a deep sale.

The Last of Us Part II is a game that has flashes of utter brilliance, but sadly these moments are interwoven by a muddled narrative which lacks any substance and loses itself in its length.

Now in a couple more sentences, let's start with the good. If the first game was a 10/10 for the PS3 when taken as a whole, this game turns things up to an 11 on the gameplay, world design and (generally speaking) quality of life front. For sure, I could nit-pick a few grievances here and there (we still cannot holster/un-holster weapons after all these years), and the enemy AI (while indeed improved upon a lot from the first game) still leaves a considerable amount left to be desired especially in-regards to the games stealth elements, the game plays very well. My number one piece of advice for any newcomers to the game would be to toy around with the vast settings/options the player is given (especially consider turning off "Grainy Film" setting which is turned all the way up to ten by default and really only serves to make the game appear more cinematic in a few select instances but beyond that drags down the visual quality quite a bit). The gunplay feels more responsive, more brutal and more satisfying (like a faster, more polished version of the first game with more upgrades too). The environment (and environmental variance) particularly in the second half of this game far surpasses most areas in the first game and the dystopian and torrential Seattle, with its vast landscape and imposing skyscrapers serves as the perfect backdrop for good chunk of this sequel. I should also note that the replayability factor for this game is fairly high with some gameplay modifiers to mix things up on a second playthrough, along with 7 different difficulty settings (one of them being a cool difficulty customization setting) and a new game plus on top of all that. The only problem is that I can't imagine that anyone would be eager to jump into this game right after beating it for some reasons I will detail below.

Next, on to the not so good. This game does not justify its length what-so-ever. It averages around a 24 hr playtime (mine ran a little longer at 25hr 54min and 2sec) and there are multiple instances in the final 'act' of the game (note: the game does not run by a traditional 3-act format) that could have served as a suitable ending point, but instead the game drags on needlessly for way too long without any real purpose. Narrative-wise the game is quite simple for the first 55% of the story and while it takes one very abrupt and calculated "risk" early on (which isn't really much of a risk since it is not earned and feels forced, as if trying to challenge the player without setting up the scenario properly in a believable manner given the characters that it concerns) I found the first half of this games narrative to be serviceable enough to be enjoyable to play through. The majority of the interpersonal relationships and dialogue between characters feels as natural, fluid and almost as consistently good as the first game. It is after the halfway point and a shift in character perspective when things narratively really start to take a turn for the worse unfortunately. Now I should say that the second half of the game has its best gameplay sections by a mile and I actually liked the 2nd main character who you play as alright, but there is no question that the quality of the writing takes a nose dive massively once we are introduced to the games events through the "other-sides" point of view. The characters in the WLF (no spoilers) are written to be smug, unlikable, fake, and in the end disagreeable as a whole.

But If we finally want to talk about the downright ugly, at its base this game has nothing to say. In the end it feels as though its a story that may allude towards the idea that "revenge isn't what so-and-so character would want" or perhaps "this character ultimately can't commit to revenge because that's not who they are to their core" but it fails to portray any characters as having any form of moral gradient or nuance in their actions, behaviors or thought patterns. In a story about revenge the topic of regret is never once explored. Rather than existing in shades of grey, both of our main protagonists make decisions that are either black or white with no in-between. Any form of internal struggle or conflict with what they have to do (which really is portrayed as what they want to do) is non existent. There are also several instances where characters are dumbed down in order to progress the narrative and act out of character or make decisions that just simply don't make sense in order to move the story along which feels unfortunate and lazy coming from a studio that did a pretty good job of writing a more concise narrative the first time around.

You've all seen and heard all about it by now, so I'll put it plain and say I think the decisions made for the story were bold and took storytelling to a different level. I, of course, didn't like how quick Joel was killed off, BUT, neither did Ellie. Naughty Dog forced you to walk in the shoes of the "antagonist" we all watched brutally kill a beloved character. For me, I ended up liking both characters and left things feeling super complex in an ambiguous way. It was all a big psych evaluation from beginning to end. My biggest complaint is really the ending, which is why I'm giving it a 7 (which is still a 'good' score for me). It felt like they didn't know how to end the game and just felt thrown together in an otherwise epic narrative, it wasn't really a short game and the ending was just bland. I still enjoyed the game, it was fun, intense, and downright gorgeous. While I still had a couple of issues with some decisions that were made I STILL appreciate what they were going for. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 2 is the one of the most polarizing games in the history of video games. It has many positive things going for it, but this however is let down slightly by some questionable storyline decisions. I first played TLOU2 back in June when it first released, and after a recent revisit, I feel like I can finally sum up my experience with this game.

Firstly, the positive, LOU2 graphically is 150% the most impressive looking game that we have seen on the PS4 hardware and can even compete with the PS5 graphically, the fact ND were able to craft such a beautiful game on the PS4, when other developers sometimes struggle, speaks volumes of their talents as game designers and nobody denies the game in this area. Secondly, the gameplay, while it lacks innovation, it still works smoothly and reminds me of how fun the first games gameplay was also and enough has changed where to me it feels different to the first game, the stealth aspect is what shines the most especially on the harder difficulties and adding a prone position, although small, did a lot in terms of how you can approach areas. You can move through areas of human enemies without lifting a weapon or you can massacre absolutely everyone, which in a sense can add replay ability to the game. I enjoyed the addition of Dina and Jesse in this game and thought they added some light-hearted moments in a game drenched in dread and of course the return of Ellie and Joel was welcome with open arms. All of the performances of all the actors were great even Abby.

Speaking of Abby, let me get on to the negatives present in this game that refer to the storyline, now Abby herself is not the issue for me, its how the story structure and pacing was handled that holds me back from giving this game higher then a 7, lets speak on one of everyone's main issue, Joel's death, for me Joel dying wasn't the issue, due to his actions in the first game his death was coming, what was the issue was how he died and I believe ND took small liberties with the writing of Joel to push the plot, as his behaviour in death was nothing like the Joel we know, you could argue it was because he lived sheltered for 5 years, however, he lived as a survivalist for 20 years and in my opinion someone that experienced a life like that for 20 years could absolutely sense when something was up and wouldn't have played dumb like Joel did in LOU2, he's supposed to die, but i think I would of preferred if he went down fighting, but enough of that. in terms of structure Abby's part being around 10 hours after Joel's death was a problem for me as it really dampened my experience with her as the image of her over standing over Joel was in my head constantly as i was controlling her, which made me not really care for her story, i feel like making her part first would have changed this as when she kills Joel, Joel's actions towards her Dad would have been on my mind and I would have perhaps found it easier to sympathise with Abby however the way they structured it just made me not care for Abby. another issue with the storyline is when I play 15 hours as Ellie hunting Abby's friends building tension and then we reach a point where they are face to face in the theatre, the game then pulls a 180 and says now play 10 hours as Abby to see this confrontation, meaning now I have to wait 10 hours for to see the part I've been waiting for, this further makes me lose interest in Abby's side of the story as I and I think other players would of tried to rush through it to get back to that point in the theatre making us pay less attention to Abby and at times her side has issues with writing, for example why in the world would her group allow a pregnant Mel to go out in the field once again this is weird and unrealistic especially at how far along she was. once again similarly to Joel's death I feel that this was forced writing so Ellie could kill her later and almost become the villain which was just a questionable to do considering how widely loved Ellie is. The ending is another thing people take issue with as it seems Abby gains a lot and Ellie loses everything, however I liked this ended and interpreted it as Ellie has made peace with her vengeance and is moving on. although I thoroughly enjoyed Ellies part of the story i would have liked the story more and gave a better rating if it Abby's story was structured and written better, to achieve the goal of ND and make us sympathise with her, however the way they did it the story fails to do this.

To close TLOU 2, is an enjoyable game with many qualities I love in terms of graphics, gameplay and some characters, but ultimately the story falls slightly flat due to issues with structure and writing which is more present in Abby's story.

I will finish with this, TLOU 2 does not hold a candle to the first game.

Worst of all, ND and other studios catering to such misguided and vile notions just gives them more ammunition to ruin everything for everyone. Books and anime, I believe, are the only untouched media left for me where I can truly enjoy without having hateful and extremist propaganda hammered into every neuron in my body. This game deserves neither the vehement praise it's gotten (same goes for the awards it's won; idk what reviewers are playing these days or who they're catering to) nor the deluge of unreasonable hate.

Aesthetically, the game is astoundingly beautiful. The environments are staggeringly intricate and massive. The dense forest is the best I have witnessed in a video game and it beats SOTR. There were times when I would just stop and look around, taking in those incredible moss-covered buildings or grassy terrains with open skies, and then finally decide to proceed in one direction, only to come back and finish exploring the remaining areas.

Game narrative was extremely powerful for invoking strong emotions in me; however, it did total injustice to Tlou1 characters. That's unforgivable to me. Tlou1 was a powerful, interesting, uplifting and immensely engaging story with compelling characters, set in a believable, brutal world. Unfortunately, for reasons unknown, ND chose to forgo all of that and plunge into utter darkness and insipidity. The central theme of revenge seems really petty and only adds on to the lack of ingenuity in the studio.

The decisions the characters make are hilariously and mind bogglingly irrational, considering the type of world they live in. My playthrough with Abby was very half-hearted, absurd and distasteful. Surprisingly, I found that Abby controlled better, moved better, which was probably a cunning way from the devs to make me like her. The game is filled with unlikable characters like Abby and Dina that serve no purpose. The only likable character was Lev, only added to humanize Abby though. Older Ellie isn’t likable either. Younger Ellie had such a charm and healthy vibe to her it was almost refreshing, but they opted to completely eliminate that and replace her with an unsatisfying and lifeless character that is doomed to be unhappy for the rest of her life.

The level design seems to have improved and is actually good. You can access more areas this time around. Enemy variety and design is pretty much the same though. The only section I truly loved beyond complaint was Ellie’s encounter with the Scars in the park. When it comes to gameplay mechanics and what the game has to offer, ND has never been good. It's basic and at times, clunky gameplay. I never loved their Uncharted games and they were a bore fest, the puzzles insufferably dull. In Tlou2, traversal and exploration, though not bad, are jaded. Besides nice visual updates, combat hasn’t evolved much. However, the stealth gameplay was extremely fun for me. Scavenging for resources during intense combat sessions was exhilarating and strategizing my moves as I attempted my stealthy approach, sometimes getting caught and then fleeing madly to establish cover again was intoxicating. The dodge mechanic doesn’t work like it should, forcing you into an animation you can’t stop and sometimes it doesn’t even work, precisely because of that. Picking up stuff is unbearably slow, to the point where I was infuriated and auto pick up doesn’t alleviate this mind-numbing inclusion. Opening drawers and cupboards—irritating. Shooting just like Uncharted is not good, but tolerable. Certain things I wish could’ve been better were creativity in puzzles. ND was never good at designing good puzzles (that includes the rudimentary puzzles of Uncharted), but I was hoping they’d have grown by now.

This game doesn’t focus on Ellie, instead it focuses on another character that regardless of what ND does to fool us into liking her, deserves no redemption whatsoever. Having Joel tortured and murdered that way and making Abby look like a man makes me wonder if radical feminists weren’t behind this **** Honestly, I never wanted to kill the doctor in the first game, and Abby’s premeditated murder of Joel does not justify her revenge.

So, did I enjoy the game? Not really. I wanted to. I'll clear Tlou2 on grounded for sure someday, since I first played on survivor, but this is a game I’m disinclined to replay, at least for now. By the end, I didn’t care for either Ellie or Abby. I simply wanted the violence and the ‘game’ to end, after having been bludgeoned to death for 40 hours with the highly divisive, revengeful and hateful plot. In a nutshell, although it is much less interesting than Tlou1, I got to play a survival game in a beautiful, post-apocalyptic setting with good stealth.

After several boring stuff later , you play as ellie at the ending trying to kill abby but she literally lets her go after killing 150+ innocent people , traveling miles and risking relationship . After she arrived at the house her gf left her she lost two fingers and she **** off back at the forest with no one caring about her anymore .... and abby visits the catalina house or whatever the hell it is amd we def know what she’s doing there basically having fun with her friends and drinking and eating meanwhile ellie scraping street concrete for food and looking for a friend , the story was a complete mess but there was some fun moments. Unfortunately there was too little fun moments that i can’t even mention but most of them were puzzles that are kinda good and boring at the same time .
    Story is a straight 3/10
But the mechanics alone pushed it higher imo

    The full verdict is 5/10
The game franchise is famous cuz of its story and characters where in this game it failed .

The problem is the gameplay: There’s been absolutely zero evolution in the seven years since the original was released. TLOU at least had some fun and occasional joy. Aside from one section (in the museum) TLOU2 is a joyless monotonous slog. Frankly, even the museum section would have worked just as well if it were one long cutscene, since the only ‘gameplay’ consists of navigating between cutscenes.

So how do you grade a game where the gameplay is the worst part? Well, if you decide it’s a piece of art making a point about the brutal, repetitive, monotonous cycle of violence, then I guess you can give it a high score. Personally, I think they’d have been better off making the film they so clearly would have preferred to make.
    I gave it a 6.

Potentially some of the greatest gameplay on the ps4 with amazing encounters is ruined by forcing you to play the comically beefed up enemy Abby for half the game.
I know the writers were going for a Jamie Lannister-style turnaround, but it doesn't work, you still want her dead and I ended up rushing through this part of the game to get back to being Ellie, even though there were some really cool set pieces as Abby. Did they even do any honest user testing? The ending was also very unsatisfactory and made the whole final journey pointless. Potentially the greatest game of this console let down by writing trying to be too clever. Only bit I enjoyed in second half of game was launching Abby off buildings/ losing to Ellie on purpose in their theatre showdown.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The main issue I had with this game is the script, the story is written terribly, one of the main reasons why is because Joel (Protagonist in Part 1) is killed off in the first few hours of the game and I can understand why people did not like that. Joel getting killed off is not the main issue, the main issue is about 10-13 hours into the game you play the character Abby (The husky lady who killed Joel with a golf club) and that was not a smart move to play. You could have created many better outcomes for this game but you didn't. One of the other things people might not like about it is that it takes risk, and by risk I mean that it dares to be depressing and I think that this game is pretty good. This game has one of the most depressing ending I have ever seen in my life. The message is trying to say is that heroes don't always get the death they deserve, what addiction can lead to, and in this world their is no good and bad only people doing what they think is right. Gameplay 10/10, Story 6/10, characters 3/10 Art direction 10/10, dialogue 7/10. This game is a 7.4/10. Expand

That said, in terms of overall presentation, atmosphere, visual art, soundtrack, acting, animation and motion capturing, level design, overal technical execution, there simply is no better game on PS4 at the moment. It's beyond excellent in all of these aspects, truly top of it's class.
The story though is just horrible and for a story driven game that's a death sentence.
I'm also having a hard time to only blame Neil Druckmann. Everyone has bad ideas sometimes. But why did nobody stop him? Why didn't he get honest feedback from people? What happened here? I'm one of the people who only bought a PS4 because I wanted to play his fantastic Uncharted series and Last of us on it. And I honestly love the introduction of a transgender character, that was long overdue. I'm quite certain a majority of disappointed fans also don't even give a damn about Ellie's sexual orientation, it's 2020, so who cares?? But for hours I felt like I was playing a game that I just didn't want to. For me, probably the worst decision was to put a mid-game cliffhanger in and then forcing the player to play with a new character hours on end. I didn't want to play Abby, though she was kinda cool and interesting. But I bought this game for Joel and Ellie, not for some vain personal storywriting experiment like the The Last Jedi. In both cases, the experiment has failed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL;DR - too long, but worth a go for some pretty solid gameplay if you can pick it up on sale. I don't think this is GOTY at all, but worth playing still.

It's hard to really define where I fall on this game. On one hand, the gameplay is pretty good. The stealth isn't so merciful that if you're discovered you can't get back into stealth to try and finish your enemies off sneakily, and enemy AI feels dynamic and smart.

That said, the gameplay doesn't evolve beyond the first chapter - sure there are upgrades, but they're minimal and don't change gameplay much. Generally, the game is too long, twice as long as it needs to be - and that's not that I'm against switching perspective half way through, I just think that each half should have been half the length, maybe even shorter.

Through most of the game I found myself dissapointed that I had gameplay to go through, I genuinely think it would have made a better short TV series than a game. With that said again, the character motivations throughout feel forced and unbelievable - particularly with each character flip-flopping towards the end.

The boss fights also weren't great - at least not the ones against humans. Melee doesn't feel good in this game, and the bit where you're Abby chasing Ellie felt disconnected to the rest of the gameplay.

Also a shame they got rid of Joel, as the only character relationship I really gave a **** about was between him and Ellie, all the other characters have rubbish chemistry and awful dialogue.

    Parts that I liked:

The inconsistent and inauthentic writing of the characters, making frustrating decisions, in this game is really what really spoils the story's ability to captivate the player. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us: Part II is a good game and while I don't think it's as bad as people say, I don't think it's as good as critics made it out to be either. It is a much weaker game than the original. While there are 10/10 aspects of this game for sure, there were a few aspects that didn't really work for me.

    The great:
    Graphics - 10/10 (Pretty self-explanatory)
Gameplay - 10/10 (While gameplay might seem outdated to some, I thoroughly enjoyed it)
Level Design - 10/10 (Levels so large with multiple paths to evade/escape enemies
Acting - 10/10 (Ashley, Laura, Troy and others fantastic, as expected.
Nostalgic Flashback Sequences between Ellie and Joel - 10/10

    The good:
I do like the story to this game and I like what the writers were going for however, I think with a stronger writer this game could have been amazing. I did like a lot of characters (Ellie, Joel, Lev, Yara, Dina, Jessie, Tommy, Owen and even Abby.

    The not-so good:
I don't have a problem with Joel dying the way he did, he was never a good guy and it makes sense that former fireflies would be seeking revenge for what he did at the end of the first game. However, I do have a problem when his death is not set-up properly. Joel and Tommy walking into a room full of armed strangers seemed out of place and contrived if I'm honest. There was just barely any suspense leading up to his death.
I think Seattle Day 1 for both Ellie and Abby could've been shortened down at least half, as this really affects the pacing (However, Seattle Day 2 definitely improved this, in my opinion).
i also don't understand why Joel is seen by everyone as the only villain in this game either. I wish the game demonstrated how both Joel and the Fireflies were both villains, as neither of them asked Ellie's permission as to what she would like to have done.
Mel was an awful character and I had no problem seeing her get stabbed in the neck by Ellie. I thought she was so stupid to go out on a combat mission whilst pregnant.
I liked Dina, Jessie, Lev etc. but I wish they were fleshed out more so I could care about them even more. That being said, all performances in this game were fantastic.
The Santa Barbara section was also too long, especially when I thought the game was coming to an end. Speaking of that section, I had no problem with Ellie sparing Abby at the end, it just didn't make sense considering the 1000s of NPCs she killed before then, whilst showing no remorse for any of them.

    Overall:
As a huge fan of the original, I did enjoy this, and it is a very fun game to play. However, I feel that the writers, Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross, had good ideas but they needed a stronger writer overall. I would recommend this if you can get it at a sale price. Considering how divisive the game is, I can't be sure if you will enjoy it or not.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 2 is a story that attempts to say many things, yet ultimately fails to cohesively convey everything it wishes to say. There are elements that feel forced, and there are some unlikable and often forgettable characters. The game will make you feel uncomfortably powerful and powerless.
Before I begin on the story, let me first say whatever positives I have regarding this game. Those can be broken down into three categories. Gameplay, visuals, and accessibility. After this, I will talk regarding story.

    Visuals
TLOU2 is perhaps one of the most photorealistic games in recent memory. I had just come off of playing Death Stranding prior to playing this game. The beautiful yet horrifying and occasionally grotesque set pieces within this title were clearly crafted with love. Naughty Dog has taken the world that they originally conveyed on PS3 and utilized the technology of the modern age to create vivid imagery. I myself love when a pretty game comes out that shows what hardware can truly push. The Last of Us has a uniquely apocalyptic while still grounded art design and it is beautifully showcased. Seattle is the main set piece and the depressing, overcast, and dreary atmosphere permeate this game perfectly. The characters we see are often detailed down to pores. The environments feel simultaneously dead and alive as if they were made to fill the player with dread while still having their own beauty. The infected areas made my skin crawl with their dusty, overgrown, and eerie design. Additionally, the glass breaking mechanics were a small detail that was overexploited by myself for simple satisfaction. Areas to climb, walk through, or squeeze through were made obvious, in a way where it was mentally recognizable without having necessary visual indication. Overall, the visuals Naughty Dog within TLOU2 were top tier.

    Gameplay
The gameplay of TLOU2 was in classic Naughty Dog fashion to their previous games. This time however, many of these mechanics felt refined, more responsive, and were fun to use. The key word here is "felt". These mechanics felt familiar to their predecessors, but somehow also felt like they were somewhat snappier, had a little less delay once input, and all movement felt smoother. Naughty Dog has a realistic approach to actions made by the characters as well. Unlike popular action games such as Call of Duty, you cannot simply make 5 actions happen in a split second. This allows players to take a slower and more methodical approach to combat within these games. I would be remised if I did not talk about infected encounters as well. These encounters feel more weighty in this game with the new dodge mechanic. This dodge mechanic adds a new level of savagery to the combat and, more specifically, to the enemies. The infected feel heavier and more ferocious with the player having to be less careless and pay more attention to everything the opponent does. It turns melee combat into more of a dance. Finally, the puzzle mechanics such as power, ropes, and safes are all powerful but sometimes tedious. In summary, the gameplay of TLOU2 feels tighter, more deadly, and consequential, which are all powerful in a game like this.

    Accessibility
Gaming is for everyone. That is the sentiment that much of the industry shares and it shines brightly in TLOU2. Once the game first boots up, it takes you through an in-depth list of options to make this game as accessible as it possibly can be for all who decide to play. I wish to see this in more titles from all developers. I enjoyed the auto pickup mechanic as I believe my triangle button may have given out after playing through this title otherwise. When everyone can play a game, everyone wins.

    Story
I had not played The Last of Us until before I played this title. The end of the first title ending with Joel's lie left me with a feeling as if there was more to explore. The opening of TLOU2 gave me the best closure for the end of the first title. In contrast, the story of TLOU2 left me with more closure at the end than the first title with Ellie walking into the distance defeated. The story of TLOU2 is polarizing to say the least. I found myself feeling as though this was a multiple choice story but only had one option for me to follow with the linear story. I found my morals and emotions challenged. However, like Seattle, storms loomed too. Characters such as Isaac, Mel, Jesse, Tommy, and Owen all felt underused to me. The LGBTQ+ elements of this story felt forced in the case of Ellie and Dina, who I did not sense a deep connection between. The elements of Lev being trans and forced out of the religious cult that he is a part of feel like a political message. The story left me feeling hollow, yet indifferent. Desolate is the descriptor for my experience. The Last of Us Part 2 is a game that will have you go through many emotions, trials, and moral-challenging situations. Play this game and see how you feel.

    - Una trama pretenciosa a mas no poder.
    - Un ritmo exagerado, pudo haberse resumido mucho mas.
    - Completamente repetitivo.

Here, the story was poisoned by poor character development and hidden agendas regarding sexual identity, with obvious emphasis on the latter throughout the game. Some people might like it, but I certainly did not.. I have been impatiently waiting for the release of this game since the release of the original one a few years ago, which was an absolute masterpiece. But when I finally played it, I wish I simply didn’t. The purpose of gaming is to take the mind to a happy place to de-stress and be entertained. And just like any other gamer, I played this game to be entertained. However, I constantly found myself confronted by ethical dilemmas and uncomfortable feelings knowing that I am being fed someone’s ideas in the context of entertainment.. Disappointing.

I'll take a NES game from my childhood that ended with "THE END! GAME OVER" I am glad Ellie ended up alone. Jump button? It got me in trouble more than anything. I forced myself to slog through until the end and I wish the game was 10 hours shorter.

Some good things here like when you come across the Scars. Dogs can smell you. That is about it.

Story is awful and uses the characters you like as ammunition to poorly spoon feed you a really obvious and cliché "lesson" that violence and revenge are bad and it takes "the bigger person" to break the wheel. Something Red dead Redemption 2 did masterfully. Not only did Red dead 2 do it better but the story was told much more effectively and naturally rather then force LOU2 does. Game is fun mechanics better i guess but which no direction in story that made me really want to keep play. I forced my self to finish this game btw dude to how controversial not like this game is. Being ABBEY SMASHHHH was fun at times wont lie. Now dont mind me while i gallop off to Red dead 2. Yeehaw Expand

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm sorry Naughty Dog, I love you all and I am a big fan of your games, but this one is a huge complete trash. Killing Joel was a huge mistake, and the writing was just bad. And honestly I know this game won GOTY 2020 at the Game Awards, but for pretty much everyone, the real winner should've been either Ghost of Tsushima, or Hades. But I'll admit that you guys deserved the Audio Design award at least for this game. But everything else I say no. Sorry Naughty Dog, but I have to pass this game. But don't worry because I still love you all and I don't hate none of you. I just basically think that killing Joel was a huge mistake for the franchise. Expand

It would have been 10/10 but there’s no need for all gay stories… Apart from that it’s one of the best games I ever played and I didn’t expect this to be so good as I didn’t really enjoy the first one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very sad to see the story go down the path it did. Lots of plot armour keeping Abbie and Ellie alive. Some of the events were just in the wrong order and would have made sense if it was organized differently. The ending of the game was disappointing as it was inconsistent with previous 20 hours and would have made sense if the player had the choice to make by the end of the game. Some of the combat felt repetitive and outdated, The world and graphics are gold standard. No bugs encountered on my playthrough. Expand

The Last of Us Part 2 takes away everything that you have built in The Last of Us Part 1. This game is an emotional roller coaster but most of those emotions are negative. Probably the most depressing game I've ever played with really bad story choices, annoying characters and unnecessary sex/romance scenes. You can't deny the beauty of the game and how great the gameplay is. I feel likeThe Last of Us Part 2 takes away everything that you have built in The Last of Us Part 1. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
