The gameplay itself is stuck in 2013. It's not a bad game but it's no masterpiece either.

My rating is for the work put in by devs, the narrative was sawft. why the main characters behaved so out of their personalities with regard to the first game is beyond me.

SPOILER: Joel gets killed exactly the opposite of how he killed Abby's father yet she's let go to join more fireflies. everyone forgets Jesse after he's shot. Narrative failed to make me sympathies with Abby.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to like this game, man, I really did. The first Last of Us was one of my favorite games of all time. I went into this optimistic that the haters would be proven wrong and this would be one of the best games of 2020, and for the first few hours, it was! The game looked great, we got some great bonding between Joel and Ellie, and the gameplay was interesting and fun. But then Joel got killed off. I'm not upset that Joel got killed off, he did some horrible things, but killing him off within the first two hours of the sequel to a game which got me completely invested in him emotionally is just not the right way to do it. They should've introduced the character that kills him off first, given us her backstory, and THEN killed Joel off. Instead, they did it in reverse. You end up playing as the killer for about 7 hours, and most of it feels like filler. The constant flashbacks during this arc ruin the pacing and make for a confusing and needlessly long arc with little to no big reveals save 1 or 2 that I won't spoil. Then we get to the ending where Ellie and the new character's arcs converge. Ellie fights with the new character, gets her fingers bit off, but ends up letting her go, even after she killed Joel and some other characters dear to Ellie. This makes absolutely no sense considering the remainder of Ellie's arc after Joel's death is focused around killing innocent people because Joel's death made Ellie lose her sanity so she just starts killing everyone around her. And then she lets the person who made her lose her sanity go? I'm sorry, but regardless of the message you're trying to tell, that's just bad writing. The worst part about this is that there are some good parts in here, it's not all bad. The plot just comes across as a misery simulator (as some people have been saying) with absolutely no payoff, leading to an unsatisfying ending with the antagonist getting what they wanted with absolutely nothing for Ellie in return. The game ends with Ellie at home, alone and depressed because she has no one left. There's so much more I could talk about, but the story is just a mess. Avoid this game. 4/10 Expand

Props for the lgbtq representation. Graphics and game play are great. But this story is throw-away garbage. Super pretentious thinking we needed to be taught that revenge is a fool's errand. And Ellie ended up a terrible, toxic, selfish person after being so loveable in the first game. It's heartbreaking to see what happened to a character. It didn't have to be this way.

That being said, Last of us part 2 is a lot of hits and misses, but the missed are so impact-full that it ruins the game. I pre-ordered it, because I had a lot of trust in the company, but that went out of the window. I enjoyed the game for some time, and even some controversial choices were fine by me, but then it all wend down hill and the disappointment overshadowed the enjoyment.
Here is the sum up of my thoughts of the game:
    1) Graphics - 5. The character models are good and the world is quite nice, but it becomes obvious that PS4 is no longer a decent hardware. After being able to play games on 60fps or more, the drop back to 30fps is really noticeable and worsens the experience.
    2) Sound - 9. Really good. Liked it a lot.
    3) Gameplay - 7. Its better than the first game, though (I know it's done to balance the game mechanics) some choices remain stupid. Like, you can carry 8 shells, not single more, but then you also can carry a brick. Also, the enemies spray you with bullets, but drop nothing. That being said, if you can ignore it, it's enjoyable. Really liked the weapon crafting, though, again, there were some irritating flaws that I can't reveal without spoilers. And the most annoying bit for me is the lack of mouse and keyboard (but it might be just me - it doesn't reflect the score).
    4) Story and characters - 3. I managed to get through to release without seeing a single spoiler and experienced the game as it was meant to, and I went away dissatisfied. It was not just because the events that took place, but also the character development, their choices, which seemed stupid, missing dialogs that I was waiting on and the list goes on. There were some gems, but even they were executed poorly. This game dwarfs against it's predecessor. The actors did their part really well, but it couldn't save the mess the writer made.
OVERALL: 5 (it's not a mathematical result, but an overall score), Can't recommend.

If I'd met myself few days earlier I would suggest skipping this game and keep on waiting for Cyberpunk 2077. Too bad I spent my hard earned cash on this game.

I'll give it a 5/10. The story is what really ruined it for me. They tried too hard to do too many things at once, and utterly failed. There's a few good nuggets, but they are few and very far between. For a 30 hour game, that's just not good enough.

The Last Of Us Part 2 poderia ser bem mais interessante se o enredo tivesse sido melhor trabalhado. But it is relevant, it is current, and it needs to be discussed. The post-apocalyptic setting is way above what we could see in part one of the game. Entering an abandoned house, and finding traces of the people who lived there is very cool, whether in documents left behind or in objects, it is absurdly immersive and expands to the universe of the game. Those infected are even more brutal than before. Human enemies bring an even greater degree of difficulty. And we do wonder what can be worse than people in this post-apocalyptic world. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, before some fool thinks my dislike of this game has anything to do with LBGQT, I loved the first game and thought Bill's homosexuality was done well and the Left Behind DLC was great and makes perfect sense in the context of this world that Ellie would be attracted to women instead of men.

I was really enjoying this game even though the story is mediocre but then they made me play as Abby for a second time after what she did to start the game. I have absolutely no interest in playing that character and could care less about her story after what she's done. If the devs would have put her story before the incident it would've made it much less infuriating that I have to play for an extended period of time as her even though all the marketing was designed to mislead gamers into thinking we'd be playing as Ellie and interacting with Joel often. Despite that, I was ready to give the game an 8 or 9 because I was enjoying the gameplay, but considering how difficult it's going to be to finish the game because I can't stand Abby I just can't. The gameplay is much improved from the first game. The story isn't nearly as good but the voice acting is amazing and the graphics are beautiful. I really wish they hadn't decided to put Abby's story near the end because it completely ruined the climax that had been building with Ellie's journey. Abby getting the upper hand was very cliche, the typical bad guy gets the jump on the good guy off camera scenario we really should've been able to fight Abby and have a choice on dealing with her. I don't need a 25-hour lecture on how bad revenge is, everyone knows revenge is bad and it's not a concept that leads to a lot of motivation for an entire game. This game is really Abby's journey not Ellie's as you play longer as Abby than you do as Ellie but Abby was NEVER going to be a sympathetic character after brutally beating and coldly murdering Joel. I know Manny is NOT Druckman but the resemblance cannot be denied which adds a lot of symbolism to that character spitting on Joel's corpse.
One of the most upsetting aspects of the story in this game is characters not acting like themselves. Joel was one of the most careful characters you could imagine in the first game yet surrounded by strangers he gives out his name, give me a break. The idea that 5 years in Jackson while going on patrols would make him that careless doesn't make sense. Joel didn't even fully trust Ellie until they got to Jackson in the first game and even that took Ellie running away for him to finally give in to his feelings for her.

If the marketing for this game wasn't so misleading and they had treated Joel with more respect I seriously doubt there would be this much hate for the game. It appears Druckman had the idea of Revenge as a central story and clumsily altered the characters to fit that narrative rather than allowing the characters to tell the story which is part of what made the first game's story so amazing.

One last frustrating major plot hole is that Ellie kills over a hundred WLF and Scars but in the end changes her mind and that choice is taken out of the player's hands??? In the end, they couldn't even give the player the satisfaction of eliminating the character that disrespected such a beloved protagonist.

Yes I know that was the point that Joel didn't deserve a heroes ending but at the very least he deserved to go out in character. One of the things I loved about the original was that despite living in a world that was dark and horrible there was a beauty in Joel and Ellie's relationship which was a ray of light in the darkness. This game does away with any message other than revenge destroys everyone involved and everything sux. It's easy to simply leave the characters in darkness in a world like this but took something extra in the first game to leave the player with a question after it ended, was that a good /positive ending?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Game as an overall is not terrible like 0s,1s, or 2s. I agree with the opinions of many people that the graphics, atmosphere, and gameplay are top-notch as always from Naughty Dog.

What’s let’s everyone down is the story which is obvious. That most of the people here who are the fans of the original story dislike it with passion just as much as I do. But beware down below are the spoilers for the story. Those who do not want the story to be spoiled please do not read it !!!!!

Five main things that ruined the story so much

    - Killing of Joel in the first two hours of the game IN THE WORST WAY POSSIBLE WITH FUKING GOLF CLUB !!!!
    - Playing as Abby the person who killed Joel who NO ONE CARES ABOUT !!!!
    - New characters like Dina and Jesse are useless, unlike Joel they don’t have good chemistry with Ellie at ALL!!!
    - Ellie lets go of her vengeance by not killing Abby because Joel’s vision SERIOUSLY !!!!
    - The most miserable ending ever DINA LEAVES ELLIE WITH HER CHILD, ELLIE CAN’T EVEN PLAY HER GUITAR ANYMORE because Abby bites two of her finger off from her final fight and THE GUITAR WAS PLAYED IN MEMORY OF JOEL THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON TO HER LIFE !!!!

Seriously WTF WAS NEIL THINKING WHEN HE WROTE THIS SORRY EXCUSE OF AN ENDING TO THIS GAME. The only reason I gave 6 like most people giving 0s, 1s, or 2s was that the atmosphere, gameplay, and graphics were just FREAKIN amazing for a PS4 game that it could pass off as a PS5 GAME !!!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Why would you do this to us. This is what happens when you make the characters fit the plot and not vice-versa, you know, when it works. Joel turns into an absolutely idiotic character irecognizable from the last game; he helps a damsel in distress, he & Tommy say their names in front of a stranger twice, which, Joel, knowing what he did, would never do, and then Tommy & him tell them where they currently reside and the former thinks it's a good idea to let them re-stock their supplies. May I remind you that these two are badass survivors who know their fair share of knowledge of the world around them & the people that live in it. Joel completely called a bluff on the ambush that he & Ellie were being a victim of with only a few visual cues. I think this encapsulates all of the Last of Us Pt. 2's plot devices, which fall victim on the same kind of mistakes.

For a game so well designed in other departments (level design is amazing, specially the underwater-sniper-Abby vs. Tommy scene; graphically, the game is stunning, even if we're getting into uncanny valley real fast), the game has some serious plot holes and a story that leaves you a really bad taste, not for the death of your favorite characters, but because it's poorly structured. Clearly, the Abby section should've been first, in order to empathize with her & her reasons.

I don't wanna extend myself so much, but something I haven't heard so much hate about is the gameplay, which deserves it's criticisms. When you don't improve onto an overall gameplay mechanic which was stablished in 2013, there's something wrong with your game. You know what games happened between then & 2020? Metal Gear Solid V, Dishonored 2, etc. And yes, I'm focusing mainly on examples made by stealth games because TLOU2 is, primarely, a stealth game. These games, too, know how to spice things up with clever level design, which I think TLOU2 has, and clever and revolutionary game mechanics, which this game lacks, and it shows in the repetitive gameplay.

The last thing to point out by my part is that the game punishes you and makes you feel like "The Bad Guy" playing as Ellie, at least, while giving you no alternative option for murder. Joel's death is shown almost on it's entirety, with all it's gore & graphic detail involved, while, when Ellie catches Nora, it's not shown at all how she massacres her, when it would've been satisfactory for the main audience. When your game portrays a message of "REVENGE = BAD" you should stick to it and give the player some valid options to make the least killing possible.

Funny how many 0/10 reviews for this got posted withing 12 hours of it coming out, when it takes at least 20 hours to finish, longer if you're actually exploring and playing as intended...

I will start by saying I can understand how this game isn't everyone's cup of tea. The world and stories that take place it in are unrelentingly dire. It's about the best and worst of humanity showing through under the most traumatic circumstances imaginable. That said, I don't know how anyone could say that this game isn't a solid product.

Well, OK, I guess if you feel like a character being Jewish, or Gay, or Trans, or you know... a Woman, is "rubbing" an agenda in your face, I suppose you'll hate this. I personally like that they made none of those above traits the defining trait of any of the characters, they're people who happen to be one of the above, among many other well rounded things.

Mechanically, I found playing the game a lot better than the first one. The reworks to character movement and stealth are a huge step forward without feeling like they were trying to reinvent the wheel. This also allowed for much more open and inventive level design, thanks to more mobile characters and more varied AI behaviors. The fact that the game feels similar, but not the same to the first one is a plus.

Narratively, the story is a lot darker than the first iteration. It can be a slog at times. I was glad when it was over because I wasn't sure how much more I could take. But at the same time, I couldn't put it down until I reached the end. I played my first play through in about 25 hours, exploring liberally, and completed it in 2 days.

Does it live up to the previous iteration? It's hard to say. I will say that it felt True. This is not a world of rosey outlooks and happy endings. The consequences of the previous game are significant, and though I was upset by what happened, I never felt like the events of the game didn't follow a natural progression of cause and effect. Ultimately, the ending felt satisfying, if melancholy, which frankly isn't that different from what I felt at the end of the first game.

That said, The Last of Us was one of the greatest stories ever told in video gaming, so if Part II only reaches 90% of that level for you, it's still pretty good.

The graphics and sound design are exceptional, the game is mechanically sound, and the narrative is well crafted. How anyone could give this game a 0/10... I dunno. As I write this, the game is out 2 days and it's 9420 - Green, 932 - Yellow, 22014 - Red reviews. I suppose, like the world this game depicts, the majority of people, free from the constraints of society, choose to be belligerent ****

For my part, I first reviewed this as an 8/10 but every day I come back and I knock it down a point. It's a solid 6.5 in my book. A masterpiece of craft and storytelling that I really did not enjoy even a little bit. Days latter I'm still thinking about the ending and feeling bad about everything that came before.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, here's my problem with the other side of the Reviews that give it a perfect score.
My logic is this : You gave 'The last of us 1' a 10 too, so you should be able to tell the difference between a great story with great narration and character arc, since you liked that 1st game so much. But you fail in this simple task, You saw no flaw. I repeat. You saw and played a PERFECT game.

    *Spoilers ahead*
This game has no 'heart'. The story is weak and character choices are at least dumb and careless. There is no essential 'journey' here, only Jumpcuts years later. And this happens 3-4 times throughout the game. 4 years ehave passed, some years have passed, etc. This is poor writing in my opinion. There is no respect to the characters (bad or good), they all seem to be driven by anger but the game fails to communicate that anger. It just puts the player (which let's face it, we are not the player but rather a mechanism to progress the inevitable story, since you cannot alter any of the facts) to a dark place. A place where they want to put the controller down. If that's what they where going for, well, they did it.

And then there is all this weird stuff planted in a videogame like, smoking weed, lesbian sex, transgender like characters nailed from behind by a director lookalike, a rather inappropriate way of killing essential characters from the 1st game's cover being spit on by a game director lookalike, poor dialogue, and it seems that WOMEN are the only essential part of this game. Furthermore, there are these silly fights in which Ellie or Abby seem to overcome with no broken arms or legs or anything really rather than some bruises, yet Joel doesn't even lifts his hands up when he is about to take a hit from Tiger Woods. It's just the directors way of giving us the middle finger. It's like he was angry at US or he is in such a miserable dark place of his own that thinks THIS can cause feelings to the player other than anger. Well, it can't.
Then we have this angry looking face on the cover that screams revenge, yet no revenge ever occurs. And spare me with this 'she realised that killing her won't bring back joel'. She knew she couldn't make Joel come back right from the start. She just wanted revenge. Well, too bad she wasn't the director's favorite transgender.
The way men die in this game (essential characters like Jesse , Joel and everything that starts with J probably) is just stupid. Tommy gets shot in the head and lives? In what universe a trauma like that heals in a post apocalyptic world? This is just POOR writing. And he talks too? like no nerves harmed? just a flesh wound? just to progress this hideous story?

Sure, it's visually pleasant and rather smooth looking game, althgough the camera needed some work and some animation (like the dogs sliding turning animation in the city) needed extra love, the sound quality is excellent but there are sound effects like jumping that could be spared. Level design is great but the set pieces of the enemies needed work because normal people do not have this behavior in real world, like walking up and down in a corridor when they have a lookout right outside. Stealth is a joke since the outcome is probably every time the same.

Gore. It's a gore galore. Gore right until the very end, where Anakin, sorry Ellie realizes that she can't lose any more fingers. And Abby needs to take the part of Joel for The Last of Us 3, where now a strong independent woman teaches that boy how things work.

And you know the worst part? It's going to win Best game of the year award because all of these critics that FAILED to do the simple task of rating a game with so many flaws. They saw no flaw. I repeat. They saw and played a PERFECT game.

In comparison with Part I the last chapter suffers from routine gameplay. Sometimes it’s even boring. You get tired with looting, killing and ones again.
The whole story is overextended. In the end you are willing to cut it off, stop narration and let it come to some point. And the point is no point at all. You may argue that the long story is fare enough to tell there is no black&white

In a nutshell, the game might be excellent with it’s music, design, used time-tricks and more but this time around I wouldn’t say It’s the Last of Us we deserved. It’s far from perfection and definitely not the Game of the Year.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you read the review with spoilers, then you know that the developers killed Joel in the first hours of the game. With this act, the developers caused a loyal fan of the first part of the game a real pain. Sudden and sharp as a stab. But, as if this were not enough, the developers further force the player to look at how Ellie suffers and morally degrades. This brings the player no less pain, but a long and dull one. Like a toothache. And then the players are forced to play for Joel's killer - Abby. They reveal her as a bad person who is struggling to become good. Perhaps this would be a good move if the players did not have such a strong emotional connection with Ellie and Joel. But there is a connection. Therefore, attempts to humanize Abby in the eyes of the player look like a mockery. After all, in parallel with how Abby morally grows, Ellie sinks to the bottom and does terrible disgusting things. It will devastate you. And I think that the developers sought exactly this effect. But for what? To tell a banal story that revenge is bad. About that which causes only revenge and does not give deliverance.
This is a commonplace thought, but this does not mean that this cannot be a topic of conversation. Because it is important. However, if you were going to tell the story of revenge in such a cruel way, then you should have given us the story of Abby, which would have hit the player’s heart as deeply as the story of Joel and Ellie. Then a collision between Elli and Abby's foreheads at the end would be appropriate. But instead, the developers tell us something very mediocre ... The story of Abby is the level of one episode in The Walking Dead. It is interesting, but I do not want my favorite characters to die for this ...
In general, the screenwriter and the director get 3 out of 10 from me.
Out of respect for the workers who worked on the game for 12 hours a day, I will give the game 7. I would give the employees more, because technically the game is almost excellent. But I can not. This is dishonest in relations with Joel, Ellie and their fans.

Graphics - 10/10 Animation, environments, and character design are honestly astounding to experience. Such a joy to view. The peak of current gen gaming.

    Gameplay - 7/10

During your time you will as a player be controlling a number of characters throughout the 30hrs or so to complete this game, who alll play very similarly to one another. In all honestly if you have played the first game you know what to expect here very simply and similar puzzles, get from point A to Point B and you decide on either fighting or stealthily getting to point B.The differences here there are more routes and ways how the player can traverse during combat. Above, below and squeezing past tight spaces to escape. Creating a feel of smoothness in whilst taking on 3 different enemies. Sound - 8/10 The score for the game isn't as impactful as the previous, however does it job.

Now the biggest change and improvement here is the enemies.

The sound of a those clickers ringing through your ears when they are near and alert is astonishing, keeping myself in the fear zone when traversing these them. Another area of improvement is human enemies communicate, grief for a lost friend or animal that the player has killed and does immerse you more.

****Special Note**** Naughty Dog should be applauded in there efforts for accessibility to players who may have difficulty in hearing, seeing and dexterity, as the player can create and change to there own needs. The industry really needs to take note.

    FINAL IMPRESSION 6/10

As a fan and the way Naughty Dog decided on certain story elements is very ballsy. Stories take time to become loved, here its destroyed for the fans in the tutorial section of the game. This game is about the story, not its gameplay as it very simple in practice and hasn't evolved from the previous installment. I simply had to force myself to finish this game, after not caring anymore after the games tutorial.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is about hate, and boy does it try its best to make you hate it. It's not a 10/10, but its not (as the joke goes) *Naughty Dogs**t*. The game is fine, the biggest issue is the fact that the gameplay doesn't go enough to hold your interest between the story beats, and when those story beats do arrive its a mediocre mess for most of the game. The additions to gameplay are few and far between, with a jump that adds little, a prone that was sorely needed, a QTE melee combat system that adds immersion to the combat but is condemnable gameplay wise. All this set in a more open environment just makes the game feel worse. The story is not the sequel we all wanted, it is not the fallout of Joel's lie destroying his and Ellie's relationship to tragic ends, it is a story about a whole new cast of characters, and these characters walking dead esque existence in the world of the last of us. You do still play as Ellie, and you see Joel a fair bit too, but the focus is on these new characters. Unfortunately, the masterful opening hours of the last of us's build up to get you invested in the lives of the Ellie and Joel, have in the last of us 2 been replaced with a story that feels like it was written by a 10 year old in comparison. The last of us made you love the characters, but the last of us 2 expects you to like the characters based on their identity, and not for what the story shows us about them. And if I dont like the characters or story of a 25h game with mediocre gameplay, then I'm not going to like the game, and I didnt. But the game still gets points for its production value, graphics, sound, and competency in not being an bug ridden mess. But that is low praise for what should have been the game of the year. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was excited for this sequel. I saw the gameplay and I was hooked. It was an evolution of what come before in The Last of Us: Part 1 [retroactively]. I have no qualms with the gameplay. I think the mechanics are fine. I love the addition of the prone position to crawl under cars for stealth which also further supports the AI mechanics to check under cars. A dodge button is nice for close combat. I'm waiting on the multiplayer at this point. Sadly, that's where my praise for this game ends. It is a meandering incoherent mess. It's narrative is phenomenally trash. I honestly have no idea how this got approved by anyone. Neil said he had thought about the story for two years before he was ready "to make sure it was a story worth telling as a sequel to the original The Last of Us." It is a failure. It says it's a different game, but it does the same thing. Kills a character in the beginning of the game. It just takes two hours opposed to half an hour in the original game. I only played five minutes of horse riding as said future dead character, but it's fine since we played as said character throughout the entirety of the original game. Sure, that is true. The difference is said character experienced a time skip. I don't know how this person changed. How am I supposed to believe the situations they are placed in? "Oh, don't worry. It will be explained at the end of the game.", says Neil Druckmann. Which is a lackluster scene since context of two characters conversation of said previous night's "confrontation" was discussed and anyone and everyone can assume what happened. Also, we saw most of the scene in the E3 church trailer. For some reason, Neil thought it was a good idea to take those scenes and splice them throughout the game. It's incoherent. Neil wants me to like characters that I just met with random weaknesses to make them seem human, yet I don't care about any of them. Not even characters from the first game. I don't care about Joel, Ellie, Tommy, or Maria. The game didn't give me time nor did it take adequate time to make me care. It's wake up. Grab knife. Grab bag. Leave for patrol. We meet and get a shallow understanding of some people, but the narrative is so focused on rushing to Joel's death I can't experience the world or the characters. It didn't let me sit and stew with these people. Nah. Kill Joel. Small couple of scenes of the aftermath. Smash cut to Seattle. Somehow didn't face any issues getting to Seattle. We just get dropped into a wide sandbox area. It's an odd situation this game placed itself in. I think this is due to the praise Neil received for his first game. I assume he thought he could do whatever he wanted and it would be good, but the issue is The Last of Us did a good job of setting up the tropes of their game. Lemme throw another comparison your way. "Oh, baby girl." is a sentence Joel says after he finds Ellie dicing David's head with a machete. This is a moment of acceptance for Joel. He accepts her as his family. As a daughter. Abby tries to do the same thing. She says, "You're my people." to Lev. Which makes little sense since they have know each other for approximately a single day. It isn't poignant because Abby wasn't resisting as Joel did. Abby felt guilt and was like yeah. This will absolve me of my guilt. It's an torturous game to trudge through. Arduous. I thought it was odd when some fans were saying, "Don't make a sequel to The Last of Us. Don't ruin such a great game." We all should have listened. It's unfortunate, but this is the reality we live in. A sequel to a unanimously praised game is phenomenally divisive. Can a game where half of the audience doesn't think it's good truly be called a good game. What does my perspective matter? I'm just another dumb virgin gamer. It's not like I have an actual degree in writing. Expand

As a single player only, linear based story game it absolutely didn't hit the mark. This games story is all over the place and it tries to make you care about characters you've never heard of before this game. The ending was a disaster, they killed off their best character in the most meaningless most stupid way. The whole story is pointless. As a huge fan of Naughty Dog I'm sad to see this happen. I have no idea if Neil Druckmann is to blame for this garbage fire of a story. Whoever approved it is an idiot and should be fired. And to those who think that I hate this game because you play as a female character, you're wrong. The Last of Us Part II is a really good game with new game mechanics, wider variety in level design, insane level of graphical fidelity and an absurd amount of accessibility options that sets the new standards of fiddling with the game, but it is not a worthy sequel to the beloved "The Last of Us" that came in 2013, because of two reasons: story pacing and deviation from the source.

In terms of story pacing, the game is divided into two halves which is played out from the perspective of two playable characters. The first half of the game ends on the cliffhanger with both protagonist facing each other. Now, at this moment, the perspective of the game is switched to the second protagonist. The problem here is that we know we have to reach the earlier cliffhanger, so even after four of my playthroughs, I just tried to rush to the part where both protagonist meet. That made the second half almost irrelevant to me, thereby not making me invest in that character and not because of a certain incident many people are enraged about.

Another major factor, which has become downfall of various series, movies an other entertainment medium of storytelling is the deviation from the actual source. In The Last of Us II, the game does not focus on two primary factors on which the prequel focused on: The Infected and Ellie's immunity. Rather than using them as the medium used to drive the story, they are left as an afterthought. They took a backseat to the revenge story that Neil Drukmann was so desperate to tell, you can actually see that this particular storyline was rejected by many game development teams, including Bruce Straley himself. Here is a video which explains it in a more elaborate way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4c9F0oCMRw4&t=9s. His fixation on this plot is what makes the story of this game not worth the sequel we deserve.

I was conflicted in scoring this game either a 5 or 6, but I would rate it a 6 just because Naughty Dog's developers had gone to the lengths to make the gameplay, level design and the graphics more engaging than most of the games on the market.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The only thing coming for this game are the visuals, the graphics and the soundtrack. All of these are amazing and are the only reason the game comes close to a 6. Meanwhile, the storytelling, while it would be "ok" for another franchise from another unknown developer, it is mindblowingly worse compared not only to the first Last of Us but also to almost every other game in Naughty Dog's catalog. The story is repetitive, bringing a stupid concept about "revenge bad" that is constantly hammered in the players head, but it is also meaningless, with the whole story being driven by Ellie's desire to take revenge only not to do it at the last minute. It teaches the player nothing and is absolutely upsetting and even disappointing for most of the fanbase. The characters are quickly introduced and are not developed in any way, but sometimes I think they shouldn't be, since most of them are killed and forgotten about 5 minutes later. Everything the game had coming for it, specially coming from a amazing game that is LoU, it's thrown away for a bad storytelling and quick cash grab. Not only could this game give players second thoughts when buying a Naughty Dog game, it can also make the writer/ Neil Druckman's career questionble or even worthless; when someone who wrote the first Last of Us or even the best games on the Uncharted franchise writes the generic and lame story this game presents. At the end, Joel's death was nothing more than a stupid way to star a meaningless revenge story that ends in nothing. At the end, this game deserves nothing more than a 5, a 5 that is only there because of visuals. Expand

    Intro

The Last of Us Part II is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2013 masterpiece that throws our main cast of character into an unexpected turn of events. Due to the controversy surrounding the game narrative, and my own conflicting feelings after completing the game, The Last of Us Part II will surely be talked about for a while, for better or for worse.

    Story/World Building - 1/3

I am normally a huge fan of Naughty Dog’s narrative, but the story in Part II is lackluster at best and hilariously funny at worse. New characters are poorly written and many are not given enough screen time making most characters like Dina, Jesse, or [REDACTED SPOILER] feel lifeless and inconsequential to the plot. Consider how the game stretches its thin and basic plot to almost 30 hours, you would think we would spend more time to learn about these new characters, but most screen time is taken up in the second half by [REDACTED SPOILER]. Most of the game’s plot felt like filler as it tries to poorly tell a story about the cycle of revenge, stooping characters down to basic character traits to fit the story narrative. There are a few heartwarming scenes from time to time that will make fans of the original happy, but once the game is going on to the second half, it goes downhill from there. If you’re planning to play Part II for its story, you might want to wait for a heavy discount before doing so.

    Gameplay – 3/4

The great combat from the original is back and better than ever. Bigger landscapes give way for more tactical options. New weapons and crafting options help in providing varied gameplay scenarios that can be tackled in a multitude of ways. Everything works as expected besides the few technical hiccups. AI can be dumb at times or a stray bullet may go through a wall and kill you. It’s nothing that bad unless you’re playing on the hardest difficulty. The only downside besides the minor glitches is the lack of a multiplayer. The campaign is lengthy enough and can even drag on due to it’s over winded story, but the gameplay is still as intense and frantic as the original.

    Technical/Performance – 2/3

Graphics are some of the best looking on the PS4 console. Technical hiccups still happen occasionally, as stated in the gameplay segment. Harder difficulties can make problems worse and at times can lead to the game feeling less polished than the original. The soundtrack is pretty good, a little less memorable than the first. Overall, it’s still close to a technical masterpiece but looks don’t make up for a lackluster story.

    Verdict

The Last of Us Part II is a game of disappointing lows and really spectacular highs. It’s everything you wanted from the sequel and everything you did not want all at the same time. I want to like this game but the boring, elongated story is just painful enough to make it a slog to get through even with great gameplay. If you’re a fan of the original, you might want to wait for a price drop, as there are some scenes still worth seeing, but for those not the invested in this series, this might be a hard skip.

Let alone the agenda and swj elements, even without them the story would be awful, and let's not even talk about the ending. It will sell good of course but i hope nd change the way they are working going forward. Oh and btw, games are entertainment, not propaganda, if they start to become that, a new rating system showing it beforehand should be implemented.

A game notable for graphics, the story has excellent ideas and is well written, however some aspects of the story do not fit the gameplay. Completely absent a dynamic weather and therefore dynamic lights, ultra forced path and bad gunplay system.

The issues I had with the game are purely subjective and relate to my dislike of the story and how certain characters seemed to take actions that were adverse to the core traits that they were shown to use in the previous installment and in earlier portions of this game.

This really did not seem to be a SJW game in the sense where it made women seem more capable physically and mentally versus the men in the game. It's just a game where women just so happened to be at the core of the conflict. I am one of those people that really dislike the the SJW mentality most of the time and so if that was apparent in this game, I would have turned it off and stopped playing. This game treats femininity like Kill Bill, Alien, Underwater, and even Wonder Woman. The women in this game are competent and have been trained through their survival to be rugged and crafty. The men in the game were not done like Poe or Luke from star wars so that the women in the game looked better. The men were competent and trained to survive as well.

If you dislike this game, please don't let it be for the leaks because the leaks seemed to make many people think this is a SJW game and its not.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The sequel to arguably the most well recieved PS4 game offers new refined graphics which are absolutely breathtaking, whilst also giving the player more developed mechanics in the gameplay. This is probably one of the best games out there if you're looking for eye candy in games, from the scenery, facial expressions, level design everything is top notch. The game had several breath taking moments where the immersion was very alive. The performances by the actors must also be taken into consideration when reviewing this game, they truly did an outstanding job.

However this game has major issues with the plot which brings my score down by alot. After only some hours in the game you're faced with a brutal act of violence towards a character which fans love, a character who they had built up an entire game by. I'm completly fine by them killing of this character but the way the character got killed off is extremely bad. This game severely lacks the respect for the characters we all loved. The game lost my interest pretty quickly after i realized i had to spend a huge amount of time playing as the character who killed Joel, Abby. I'm pretty sure the majority of the people who atleast played the first game disliked Abby intensely after she killed Joel, the thought of playing this character for that amount of time just bored me, i wasn't interested.

The characters feel boring and i couldn't care less what happened to them. There was no connection like Joel and Ellie had, infact the best moments in the game were the flashback with Joel and Ellie. When these flashbacks were being played i thought to myself why they didn't just use what the first game did so well? There was so many other ways the story could have unfolded, it's just a shame that didn't happen. The story has some major problems with plot holes aswell that were very apparent throughout my playthrough.

I've no idea what prompted Naughty Dog to leave everything that the fans loved about the first game. It all felt like a pitty revenge plot with over used violence and moments which tried to detach us from the characters we loved from the first game. If they had nailed this story it'd have been in my eyes a clear top score, everything besides the story was of very good quality. it dissapoints me to say that this sequel that i waited a long time for was just not what i expected.

    Positives:

    + Graphics
    + Acting
    + Level Design
    + Gameplay
    + Animations

    Negatives:

    - Characters
    - Lack of character development
    - Plot

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There’s so many narrative issues. Abby isn’t a good character. She shows no remorse for her friends deaths, other than Owens I guess. She doesn’t care about anyone but Lev. She’s extremely dislikeable and it’s so obvious in the writers manipulation to get the audience to like her in her storyline. Her storyline consists of side missions basically.. Getting medicine to amputate an arm???? Going off to rescue a transgender boy confronting his mom?? What the **** Who gives a **** My problem isn’t with Joel dying. It’s how he died. It wasn’t deserved or earned. It’s obvious the writers should’ve worked in a different way of killing him because clearly, with all the backlash, they didn’t do it right. Great graphics and gameplay but that story sucks man. And oh my god, why is there a pregnant **** running around in the apocalypse?? Dina is about as interesting and engaging as watching paint dry. All I know about her is she’s Bi and she’s a Jew. Jessie, Dina, and Yara are three throwaway characters. Jessie is there to be a dumbass and get Dina pregnant. Dina is there as a love interest. And Yara is there to get her arm cut off and mowed down with assault rifles. Abbys storyline is a waste of time running errands for characters who aren’t interesting. Lev is transgender, that’s great, he’s still boring damnit. Ellie has changed so much, part of that I can understand as it’s been a few years and she’s grown up. But man she is just a sad, boring mess. Only reason I cared about her is because I consistently reminded myself why I liked her in the first game. The portions with Joel and Ellie were perfect and it all worked. I don’t know why they couldn’t have just made that Part II and have this story as part III. This entire game blows. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ignore all of these review bombs from June 19th. There's absolutely no way these people gave this game a legitimate chance with not even a day with the game out. TLoUP2 has been an extraordinary and brilliant ride It had took me 5 days to complete it on hard and let me tell you it exceeded all of my expectations even after being spoiled by "fans".

I don't know what people expected when Joel murdered, butchered the last of the Fireflies in salt lake and ruining mankind's hope for a cure. And then not have any repercussions with their kin let alone the daughter of one. It's the apocalypse... people don't understand that Joel was an anti hero, also lied to Ellie for years leaving her feeling unsure with herself. So now that that's explained we can moved passed first impressions from the spoilers.

This game left me feeling all kinds of emotions during my play through in a good way hitting all the right notes
    -Gameplay
The gameplay is soo buttery smooth and satisfying with insane levels of detail and gore! It requires you to create from its move set. And It is as good or as bad as the player wants it to be. It's a bunch of kill rooms, but how you approach it is all up to you. People that **** on its gameplay simply suck or lack creativity. This allows it to feel really unique and dynamic and has all kinds of customizing I love it.

    -Graphics and Atmosphere
There's not much to say except it's insane what Naughty Dog was able to achieve with 2013 tech they are on a completely different playing field in this regard. TLoUP2 has the best graphics than anything I've seen so far, already looks next gen! With only RDR2 ever coming close to this level of graphical detail and animation.

    -Sound and Music
Everything's just perfect in this department from gun sound design to the way enemies react to your every move, one of the only games where NPCs actually feels like a unit and knows one another, and carry's weight when you kill one of them. And the Infected sound better than ever. As for the music it's masterful.

    -Story
Last but not least to most controversial, the story. It gets a lot **** for the simple fact that Joel dies and then you have to play as his killer, Abby. But what they skip is Abby's redemption I'm not gonna lie I enjoyed playing as her more than I did Ellie. This story is so intricately designed where everything is interwoven and brilliantly executed in my opinion. They managed to make me sympathize for Abby and understand her views and in the mean time become one of the best parts in the game and personally one of my favorite characters.

The story is one hell of a journey and unforgettable to say the least leaving you in awe in what you just experienced. I only have one gripe with the narrative though and It's that Abby never tells Ellie that Joel killed her father, let alone have a conversation. But I guess you can understand the simplicity of it, that there's too much hatred/sadness for one another to simply mend with dialog. Once you take your first steps in this game it feels astronomical. In my opinion this game is a solid 9.5/10 and 100% a GOTY contender.

TLoU part 2: a ugly black gaping hole where everybody hates everybody, destroys everything and bashes everyones head in. And oh yeah, Ellie loses 2 fingers and that's the conclusion of the game. Yay!

So, every character sucks in this game, including Ellie (no that not because she is gay).
Basicly TLoU2 is "hate, anger, darkness: the game". But not in an entertaining way. In a gruesome way. Everybody loses, including the player.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us was the game that re-introduced me to modern gaming. It showed how we are in a golden age of gaming where they are practically interactive movies. I was so excited for this game.... then the leaks happened.

For context, I'm a progressive person who is sympathetic to the LGBTQ community and I laughed at the overly sensitive conservatives who automatically assumed that Abby was a transgender person. But I was also frusterated when I learned what the game planned to do with the beloved characters of the first game. Still I decided to try the game with an open mind.

Is this a good game? Yes, absolutely. Is it a good sequel to "The Last of Us"? Absolutely NOT and I honestly wish they had never even made this game because it's a story that didn't need to be told. For starters, Sony and Naughty Dog straight up LIED about what this game would be. There is a trailer that clearly shows Joel joining Ellie on her quest at some point but that was a complete LIE. When the scene plays out in the actual game, it is a different person who you don't even care about. Ridiculous and I honestly can't believe more people aren't calling them out for that specific lie.

Here's the deal, I thought I was going to hate playing as Abby but here story line was the only thing I found truly compelling in the game. They made Ellie so unlikable and foolish in this game that that's the reason why I wish they'd never even bothered making this game. All in all, the story leaves you feeling hopeless because it was totally meaningless and not well executed. If this game was marketed differently, as a game set in the universe of the Last of Us but not a direct sequel I think it'd be easier to forgive, but the current game just trashes what made the game special in the first place

Another problem I have with the story; who was the moron that decided it was worthwhile to have you kill dogs? For the most part you have a choice in killing them but at one point in the game, you are FORCED to kill a dog. The worst part is that the game has the nerve to guilt trip you for something it FORCED you to do! Just such lazy story telling.

lastly, the game play is improved but still weak. The Last of Us never had great game play but it was servicable and held up mainly by it's story. Here, the story is just poorly placed garbage so all you are left with is a slightly refined combat system that wasn't special in the first place. By the last hours of the game, I'd had enough and turned the difficulty down all the way so I could just run past every enemy encounter to progress the crappy story.

For the positives, the game is obviously beautiful and there are some amazing 10/10 moments in the game, but when you mix crap with ice cream all you end up doing is ruining the ice cream and making the crap marginally better but still not palatable. Lastly, I LOVE and appreciate how Naughty Dog added so many well thought out customizations. This is truly awesome and something I wish every developer would do.

Want to adjust the difficulty? You are allowed to customize almost every game play element to your liking. For me, I made the enemies extreamly weak to my bullets but I made myself extreamly weak to theirs, creating an almost one shot one kill game. I also made the game much more leniant with supplies so I could have more fun with shooting guns.

I hated trying to aim with a controller (my fault, not the games) but I was able to implement a slow down mechanic to help make it a little easier. When you compare this to a game like Red Red Redemption 2, which is amazing in almost every way but so incredibly poor how the developers let you actually play the game I really think Naughty Dog should be applauded for this one area of the game.

Outside of that, I finished this game and now I just want to forget the whole experience. The only reason this isn't a fully negative review is because of the few great moments in the game and the care they took in the customization features

    - I'm generally silent about the parkour of a woman 9 months pregnant, complete nonsense, by the end of the supply trip, a miscarriage is guaranteed.
    - And yeah, Ellie wasn't revealed, Deana wasn't revealed, Tommy wasn't revealed, and to recall the names of the others, you need to google it, because they are not remembered at all - they’re empty or, again, they were not revealed. The rest of the characters forget instantly, after 5-10 minutes after the dialogue with them.
+ Good things about this game: VFX (wind, fire, brains on the wall, and etc.), physics, the work of the character artist, animation, and environment artists who created the beautiful world around them.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My honest review of TLOU2

    Will contain some spoilers.

The Last of Us 2 is a story-driven game with elements of stealth, action and survival in a post-apocalyptic world. The current state of the world is filled with a fungus that takes over humans and transforms them into zombie-like creatures. The greenery in the game is lush and all over like it's taking back over the earth. It looks beautiful on the PS4 Pro.

    Gameplay
The Last of Us 2's gameplay is how you'd expect it to be but refined a little from the first game. Easy to control the character movements and trek around the different sceneries and areas within the game. I don't really know what else to say on this because it's basic stuff. I feel the scenery is well designed so it kinda hints on where to go next to progress the story.

    Graphics
The graphics in this game are beautiful especially when seeing the greenery and trekking through forest areas. Everything looks better designed compared to the first instalment. It is definitely one of the nicest-looking games this generation.

    Animations
When it comes to animations this game does them well. Everything is fluid when picking up resources, ammo, sneaking and all the other movements the characters make. I think motion capture has something to do with this also. Well done in the animations department.

Now onto the negatives because these are my biggest reasons I didn't like this game much.

    Story direction
I feel when it comes to the story the game combusts and dies. The story is a simple revenge plot due to Joel killing a random NPC close to the end of the first game which happens to be Abby's father. She simply then gets lucky in finding him after some trouble with infected and then deals with him in such an awful manner. Simply shoots one of his legs off then uses a golf club to beat the living hell out of him. I feel Joel isn't the proper Joel from the first game because why would he reveal his real name to people when he knows personally people would be after him. I feel they made Joel some dumbass person to automatically trust some random strangers and give them his real name. Back to the previous point though. Ellie walks in sees Joel all mangled up and sees him die. I know for a fact the majority of fans are disgruntled with the way he was killed. I feel and many others feel they spat on the character and made him out to be a supervillain or something. What annoys people more is you play as this character quite a bit throughout the game. Only to end up in the end not killing Abby (when playing as Ellie) and just walking away. The whole journey of the first game of building up the characters relationship is pointless because of the events of the second game. All to send this message that “humans are all trash”. Naughty Dog has betrayed the diehard fans and spat on Joel's character.

To wrap this up I feel this sequel isn't as good as the first. I feel they just pandered to a select few groups of people and have suffered for it. The user reviews show people's opinions. It isn't being massively review bombed as the gaming journalists are putting it. It's from real people with real opinions. Not everyone agrees or has the same opinions on everything.

For this, I score The Last of Us Part II a 6/10. The 6 marks going to the positives I gave at the start of my review. Neil Druckmann you needed to do better.

    Naughty Doggy-style!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

    Puntos Negativos:

Gameplay repetitivo y algo aburrido.

This is still the gold standard of triple A games in terms of gameplay. It took the simple game mechanics of the first and improved on them immeasurably, utilising them in an infinitely more dynamic world with satisfying and gorgeous level/encounter design.

[MINOR SPOILERS FROM HERE] However, since The Last of Us, there have been a lot of releases that have been superlative storytellers. From Red Dead Redemption 2 to Outer wilds to even something as expansive as The Witcher 3 to gorge yourself on. Part 2 never reaches the heights of the first game and is subordinate to even more comparable releases in this regard. The "if you're out for revenge, prepare two coffins: one for your quarry, and the other for yourself" storyline is done to death in infinitely better westerns than TLOU2 and it mostly feels like Naughty Dog has a load of emotional check boxes it wants to fill, giving the story a less organic feel.

I don't understand this recent, I think, desire that writers often have to show the humanity in all of the monsters that they create. The sequences with Abby are arduous for this reason. I simply don't care about the connection that her and her group had with the dog that I killed earlier on in the game, which they realistically brought out with them to either a) die b) maul Ellie's face off. It's so lazy. Yes, Abby’s a person trying to survive in a world only slightly more hostile than our own, but anybody can appear sympathetic, you don't need to debase and derail the momentum of a narrative and take me on a massive gameplay diversion (10+ hours easily) just to tell me that.

[MAJOR SPOILERS FROM HERE] The final act synthesises one of the worst and most egregious ludo-narrative dissonances between authorial intent, what the game is actually asking you to do at any given moment and how it’ll make you feel that I've ever seen in a video game. For e.g. a fail-state existing in the final desperate confrontation between Abby and Ellie, so that if you mess up in dodging a strike or two, you die and have to beat Abby over and over again until you get it right, is just torture porn. Nothing more. Particularly after it’s actually Ellie that forces the fight from Abby, who is to too weak and tired to care anymore, no doubt written this way in acknowledgement that there were still going to be some players who wanted their shot at harming Abby for what she did to Joel. Developers/coders probably missed birthdays and stuff under crunch for this kind of **** and that’s embarrassing. It tries so forcefully to emphasise a liberal idea of shared humanity during some of the most monstrous moments that it actually comes across as not caring about the fate, wellbeing or audience goodwill for *any* of the characters (aside from Joel but he has long-since passed). They’re simply empty vessels for a consistently manipulative game, to the point where it relies heavily on flashbacks to hold any true emotional weight, reminiscing on a time when Naughty Dog had loftier goals than this tripe.

Having said all of that, the very, very final few tender moments–the game drags and has about 10 presumed endings like Return of the King– I could see working and hitting the right note if the 20 hours (of a 30 hour game) that preceded it was better-written. Also, Ellie and Dina are mostly great and the banter that they share together outside of the cutscenes is sweet. That's it. Those are the only redeeming qualities for the majority of Part 2.

I basically never agree with review-bombs like this in user scores. They're almost always infantile and reactionary. However, in this instance, I'm inclined to agree. Though there certainly is a lot of "this is SJW fanfare", I think they're incoherently touching on the sense that TLOU2 is awfully ham-fisted and moralising in a tacky way. And they're right. Every games journalist who has touted this as a masterpiece for the pleasure of £60 a pop is a bare-faced liar because make no mistake, if you cared about Ellie and her essential goodness: Naughty Dog is taking you for a fool. If you like dogs: they are laughing at you as they p*ss in your eyes. If you wanted a sequel that was greater than the sum of its parts and had something actually meaningful to say: Naughty Dog wants you dead.

The second half of the plot for the Last Of Us Part II ruins the momentum of the first half and slowly made me lose interest in the story. It's filled with subplots and characters that don't add anything to the overarching plot and feel more like filler than anything else. And by the time I got to the end of the game I just didn't care anymore. I don't hate this game, but I don't love it either. If you're reviewing the "game" part of TLOU2 then it's a close to perfect score for me. The gameplay is intense and fun, the visuals are unbelievable, the sound design and music are amazing, and everything is just top notch. But I play Naughty Dog games for the story, and for me, this story just taints The Last Of Us storyline for me.

Just got past the golf mission, if you played the game or saw the spoilers you know exactly what am talking about, it felt sooo cheap the way that that sh*t happened, it's like they wanted to get rid of Joel! 7 years in the making and that what the writers came up with? Very embarrassing and disappointing! not like that you kill a very dear character to your fans' hearts just so the story continues and Ellie goes on a revenge mission.

If you played the first one you are gonna hate this one, if you didn't play the first one, you might enjoy this one because u have no attachment to the characters. .

Naughty Dog didn't take a risk to create something amazing like Death Stranding, they didn't try something different, they just decided to appeal politically to an ideological group that doesn't even play video games. And sacrificing the Legacy and the fans was okay to them. Never trust a studio, trust the game maker. Naughty dog died after Amy Hennig left.

Also the gameplay is more refined but is basically the same of the first, not much of improvement there but its not necessarily a bad thing cause the first is good. But the story is where this game falls apart completely trying to be a Kojima thing trying to be controversial. But trying the player like a character that kills by TORTURING the main character of the first game that saves her life seconds before, and then demanding the player to play with her and see her version?
