From one point of view, the game play is fun, the quality of the acting, and graphics are absolutely top notch, and the story is mildly interesting. It has a diverse cast of characters, and looks from multiple points of view. If I were to rate this game in a vacuum, I would give it as high as a 9/10. However, rating this game in a vacuum would do every other game in the world a disservice, because in no world do we ever rate games in a complete vacuum.

While this game has amazing game play, it's just a slightly polished version of the first game. If you loved the first games game play, then you would love this game play. If you hated the first games game play, you would hate this, as this does virtually nothing to the game play from the first one. So while the game play is truly nice (in my opinion), it's not at all a real improvement from the first game, and is by no means near a masterpiece level of game play.

However the biggest issue with this game isn't it's game play, but its story. Its hard to discuss this games story without spoiling anything, but I'm going to try. This game has an awful story. Obviously, thousands of people disagree, which is fine. We are all allowed to have our own opinions. However every place that compliments this games story and certain aspects, I can find counter examples of what they call so amazing. This games story contradicts itself, introduces several deus ex machinas, mcguffins, and is extremely heavy handed in what it's trying to tell. You get a lot of nameless faceless enemies even though the game is meant to show you that there are no nameless faceless enemies, and so on. This in and of itself isn't the biggest hit against the game. The biggest hit against this game, is the connections between people. In the first game you had such amazing and significant connections between characters. And everyone who played it felt it, that's why that game had universal praise. This game following it is like Jak 2 following Jak and Daxter. You can't fault people for being overly critical of a game the is a complete departure of the previous. The example I provided is even more glaring, because Jak and Daxter wasn't a universally praised masterpiece, meaning when the departure happened more people were willing to accept it's new traits. This game however, departs from a masterpiece, and it just falls short.

So to surmise, given the predecessor of this game does not hold up to me. I platinumed the game, and I wasn't even happy when I did it. There was no happiness when I finally beat the game. I remember being excited to finish it so I could do something else. That feeling itself is enough to justify my score of 5/10.

The exploring gets tedious and half of the talents feel useless. The story is too distanced to make you feel any emotion and, while it does not have to be wrong per se, i believe the director just wasn't up to such a simple revenge story. Tried to make it more complex by making the main protagonist go a tad psycho but didn't make you feel anything because those psycho feelings were just being forced whenever the story needed them and not built up, it feels like even the characters forget in 24h why they were where they were. Most of the events that should have made your heart cry make you feel nothing cause the story suddenly warps you out of them, and whenever something good is going on it just takes it from you. i understand it's pessimistic narrative but if it doesn't make you feel anything and it's obviously not trying to be a clever story, then what? The story does not make you crave for it, i finished the game cause i paid 70 bucks for it. I give it a 6 purely for the developers, the game works flawlessly except for a minor bug i found. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all I would like to say that this is not a 0/10 game neither is it a 10/10. This is a above average game with some amazing graphics and incredible gameplay. That is what the game does really well. It’s combat is incredibly fun and realistic. it is a fun game if you are looking for some action. But if you what to get invested in a story and want a game that tells an incredible story than “this ain’t it chief”. The game introduces a bunch of new characters that the game really wants you to like. Me personally I tried I really did but I simply did not care for Abby, Owen and so on. The new characters are really hollow and don’t seem to have an in depth personality. An example is Abby. Like what do you know about her personality. What does Abby like exempt Owen. She is so uninteresting and the only nice thing about her is her combat moves and weapons. The story is also very uninteresting and messy. They tried to do like a Tarentino directing style. With more timelines that come to getter. Which works in a movie which last 2 hours but doing this for 10+ hours knowing the outcome is really boring. The game is in general unsatisfying. In a game you should achieve something like for example saving princess peach, defeating the wild hunt, revenging Arthur or defeating the enderdragon. This game achieves nothing and it sucks. It’s a fun one time game to experience but if you wanna fall in love and play it multiple times then you are in the wrong place. I can’t force myself through that Story again. And I don’t think most people will be able to. It is still an above average game. Saying it’s **** is wrong and saying it’s a masterpiece is also wrong. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II was fine. It wasn’t the worst game, but it also wasn’t the best. First of all, I’d like to acknowledge that this is possibly the most visually impressive game I have ever played. This game is **** gorgeous. I often found myself just admiring the environments around me or staring at the way blood pools and splatters naturally. The level of detail is beyond impressive. The gameplay is also quite enjoyable, gameplay and mechanics aren’t anything revolutionary or special, but I found it fun to play. While this has nothing to do with the story, it’s still a video game at the end of the day, and this was a fun game to play. However, in a story driven game, the story fell flat. The story itself isn’t even that bad, it was the structure that made some parts feel like a chore. Having Abby murder Joel that gruesomely, then have us play as her for half of the game made me play her parts only out of obligation, not because I was interested in her character or story. I’m not mad Joel died, however the way he died felt a little like lazy writing, but one could make the argument that his extreme caution from the first game was softened by living a relatively normal life with Ellie in Jackson. I think a better way to tell this same story would be to market it as a stand alone, a spin off of the original, following Abby and her friends traveling through the United States. Then mid way, reveal they’re looking for Joel and have him die. This could be when the tides switch and we go into control of Ellie and have her half be the exact same, then have the confrontation in the theater be the FINAL boss fight to remove the events in Santa Barbara as this felt disconnected from the rest of the game. Connecting deeply with Abby before knowing her intentions would make her actions with Joel that much more impactful on the player. Introducing her relationship with the other characters around her BEFORE we know Ellie ends up killing just about all of them would allow us to better connect with them. I found myself not really caring about the love triangle between Owen, Abby, and Mel because I already knew Owen and Mel die, so it felt pointless and a waste of time. This had to be my biggest problem with the game. Trying to make us empathize with a character we already hated then make us care about her relationships when we knew these characters died made her half of the game feel like a chore. I only kept playing out of wanting to know what happens after the cut before Abby’s section begins. And to later introduce a brand new group (The Rattlers) to only have them in 2-3 hours of gameplay was very weird. The entire time played in Santa Barbara felt like a DLC rather than apart of the same game. I have many more thoughts on this game when it comes to themes and the manipulation of gameplay between Ellie and Abby to create faux empathy for Abby. I’ve already played it twice due to the fun gameplay and stunning graphics, but the story structure is beyond annoying. I unfortunately think this will be GOTY due to the prerelease hype and critic reviews, but it isn’t deserving. Expand

For a game that focuses on narrative... it tanked. They jumbled the characters and the narrative so much to where the plot just became predictable and boring. I was a huge Ellie fan from the 1st game and the DLC. They ruined her character. And for half the game you have play as Abby whom I didn't want to play as because she was a dull character compared to Joel and Ellie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has a lot going for it and a lot going against it. You have naughty dog doing what they do best and that’s gameplay, visuals, voice acting, movie like cutscenes with great mocap and character design at least in my opinion and the rest are facts honestly. But this story gets in the way of that because of the disorganization of who you play as and naughty dog made like the most Oscar bait game ever made. There’s a lot of points where they try to show off how cool the visuals are which I get but it happens way to often. Now I’ll start off with the disorganization first. By now I think everyone knows Joel dies in this game and it happens within the first two hours and I honestly thought it was done pretty well for how graphic and disturbing the torture was. But you play as Ellie for 10 hours after killing like Ellie does and for me I didn’t feel bad whatsoever. Worst I felt was when I was forced to kill any dog in the game. But after you play as Abby with a huge cut to basically meet back up to the end of the game and play the next 12 hours as her. For me I was so disinterested in Abby because of what she did to Joel and I just wanted Ellie to get vengeance. If anything it should’ve been switched because it makes no sense to feel for these characters that kill an important character and you don’t like them until 50% into the game. And at the end of abbys storyline you end up fighting Ellie in a very intense scenario that’s done really well but I didn’t want to win because i was still too attached to Ellie and honestly I think everyone thinks that. But instead you beat the crap out of Ellie and also stab her pregnant love interest which could’ve been good but naughty dog is trying so hard to make you feel something it ultimately resulted into disappointment. Plus I know there’s a group of people that hate the game because there’s a trans character in the game, it didn’t bother me really but I felt it was really on the nose and could’ve been done a lot better. The fact that no one says “trans” in the game is kind of nice but I honestly kind of find it hard to believe that anyone would really care what gender someone wanted to be in the post apocalyptic world. Like I would think people would care about ya know, like literally anything else going on but it is basically a cult that makes the character ostracized so idk. Plus could’ve been delve into deeper if they really wanted that to make sense, to me it just felt really on the surface and naughty dog just wanted to pretend this somehow isn’t just allyship on display. And that’s what I meant by Oscar bait. You can just feel someone saying “this is art” when either the random sex scene happens that could easily cut away or when the trans character appears and talks about the most surface level issue of being an outsider, or seeing that there’s a ton of diversity within the cast of characters throughout the game or whatever it is. As if something like Super Mario Odyssey isn't because it’s just some silly platformer that doesn’t deal with any dark themes and doesn't have these forward thinking ideas to put diverse characters in the game. But all of that aside, I would still say I liked the game and I’d still recommend it because the good outweighs the bad. If I could give this game a 7.5 I would because I feel that’s more appropriate of a score compared to an 8 or 7. And especially more accurate than people saying a 0-5. As if they somehow forgot how good the gameplay and everything else is other than the story. But overall, buy it when it goes on a decent sale. You don’t need to play it, but it’s still a recommendation none the less. Expand

Instead, a new character is forced on a high pedestal and without any inner mental conflict of her own, while the old characters are shamed and stripped of their previous qualities that we knew them for.

    Positives:

The technical elements in this game are seriously outstanding:

The level design complements the somewhat basic but functional gameplay very well. For a linear game, the level designers did everything in their power to give players tense encounters with different approaches, options and generous environmental layouts to play with. The levels are consistently open and natural-feeling without reminding you that it's mostly linear. There's good level variety alongside some impressive set-pieces that never felt out-of-place thematically.

The seamless animation work is truly next-gen. Combat and movement animations, motion capture, lip-sync, facial animations, and the sense of emotion conveyed through them is industry-leading, and will likely be for many years.

The world lighting, foliage density, detail density, overall graphical presentation, and cutscene presentation all break the boundaries of anything done before it, especially on current console hardware.

There's a clear focus on attention to detail with everything being so meticulously detailed with subtle finishing touches here and there, which is really impressive with how consistent it is. Especially in a game of this scale.

Finally, the sound design in the sense of ambiance/environment, reverberation/space, impact and feedback are all top notch. The strong choice of acoustic soundtrack really sells the art direction, thematic moments, and the feeling of authenticity.

    Constructive Criticism:

The story and its themes could've been better presented with an emphasis on select characters being more meaningful. At a glance, there are simply TOO MANY characters which made it impossible to develop them all, or even half of them in meaningful ways.

Similarly, the amount of unfinished subplot bloat could be trimmed down, making room to explore some of the more interesting subplots that were unfinished or underdeveloped.

Plot points and characters also at times have an artificial "forced" quality to them, with unjustified actions that aren't expanded upon; The story rarely "flows" as it should. These jarring moments in particular can be attributed to poor story planning and writing.

Lastly, there are too many harsh jumpcuts with the needlessly hectic timeline that often ruins the pacing of the game and dumbfounds the audience. This approach of storytelling makes it difficult to feel attached or invested when you already know the eventual outcome of what happens. This should be kept to a minimum when writing a coherent story, as it also ruins any possibility of suspense.

Some of the best moments in the game are where the events progress chronologically and manage to provoke suspense, and the moments where there's sections of character-building and world-building. This is all indicative that more of these moments are desperately needed in the game.

    Summary:

Overall, the technical marvels of this game is not put to good use when it tunnel-visions a shallow theme that ultimately rings hollow and isn't very meaningful at the end of the game.

Many people including myself would've wanted to explore the more intriguing aspects of apocalyptic society in The Last of Us' universe, instead of the story we got in Part II.

Some interesting characters were sidelined and were practically left with no development making me not feel anything when they died. Their deaths had no other value besides advancing the storyline.

Although I didn't like the direction the developers took with the storyline, I would have accepted it if they executed it in a good manner. The problem I had when I played as Abby was that I didn't feel attached to any of her friends thus their deaths didn't have an effect on me. The only character that felt interesting to me was Owen. The impact of their deaths can't possibly measure up to what I felt when Tess or Sam died in the first game.

I really tried and wanted to like this game. The graphics were amazing and the gameplay was improved while still keeping the vibe of the first game. The small details and easter eggs that is characteristic of LOU were still there and I loved it. Although they aced in these departments, personally, what made LOU franchise special to me were the characters and I felt it lacking in LOU 2

The only thing I knew for sure was that thered be another playable character. First let's state the obvious. The game looks absolutely phenomenal. There no denying that. Also at least for me I didn't have any sort of bugs or glitches in my playthrough, that's another plus. The voice acting was top tier. However, for me the story just didn't work. Im not going to sit here complaining about narrative choices that the developer made. Be it Joel's death or the lengthy play time as abby. They can do whatever it is they want with it. That being said it doesn't mean I have to enjoy it or have fun playing it and I didn't. Personally I feel I would have enjoyed the story more if it was a tv series or movie as opposed to a game. It just didn't have that same "something " that the first game did. Ultimately I play video games to have fun and this game just isn't fun. Clearly its not meant to be and that's ok. Its just not for me. Expand

The game-play was similar to the first but funner, i also enjoyed the addition of a new type of infected as well as one of the later bosses.

I also enjoyed a lot of the story, but not the parts I originally thought I would.
The game is split between two perspectives. You've got Ellie's first, then Abby's. I ended up enjoying the second half of the game more than the first. In fact, if the game only focused on Abby's campaign, it would have been stronger. Other than the infamous scene in the beginning of the game, Ellie's route didn't really make me feel any kind of way and I had a hard time caring about her companions. Dina didn't have as much depth as I would have hoped, and I quickly got more attached to Abby's companions.
The game-play in Ellie's route became very repetitive and boring after a while, where is Abby's seemed to kick up the pace a lot.
The biggest issue I had with the story was the epilogue. I can see what the writer's were trying to go for, but it left me feeling kind of sad.
There was a lot going on in this game, almost like they were trying do too much at once. It felt like two different games combined into one. Because of this some things aren't as fleshed out as i would of liked, such as a couple of the factions.

All in all it's a solid game, I definitely plan on replaying it. It doesn't live up to the first's reputation, but if you're a fan of the series I think it's worth a shot. Just be prepared for it to yank on your heartstrings.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I must say, the game is a masterpiece graphically and animation-wise, but the story, its too much...
Many people say its amazing, some terrible, the only reason i gave it a 7 was because its a 5 for the story and 9 for the graphics and visuals, meaning a 7 average. The first game is literally my favorite game of all time. This took the first games ideology of characters, and threw it in the trash.. The game relies WAY too much on looking for notes and writings to give story details instead of giving us the details up front. I agree a game shouldn't spoonfeed us details, but about half of all the games story is taken into writings and notes instead of actual dialogue. They focused so much on us liking Abby that we barely got to see character development from Ellie and Dina, even Tommy too. For tommy to survive a bullet to the back of the head (and exits the other side) its actually the dumbest thing the game could do in my opinion. The game needed Tommy alive, but realized he was underused so they put him into the situation that "killed him" then he survived. It's a mix of emotions, but it never should have happened. Abby and her friends are focused on too much for most peoples liking. The games message is that there are 2 sides to every story, and revenge isnt the answer, but guess what? We didn't like Abbys side to the story, and the entire game is based on revenge you never get. The ending is an obvious bridge into a part 3 that it takes emotional progression out. The death of Joel was poorly done, and ive heard the argument "yes he would say who he was, hes changed since the last game." But people forget that its only a 4 year gap between the games, and that the infections been out for 24+ years at that point, so what happened in those 4 years that made joel turn into a super helpful, honest person?? Yes, Jackson way have been different, but the point that they gave away names, location of Jackson, and their supplies away to strangers makes no sense whatsoever. The game has many plot holes in it too.. too many to count. The ending wasn't anything special, it made us hate the ending, which i believe thats what they were going for, but its no excuse to make a bridge into part 3, and completely disregard the entire story of Part 2 before that. Dina risked her life so many times and Ellie helped her so many times, but for what? Another thing is why do the developers expect us to like the long second half of the game (mainly Abby)?? It's filled with boring cutscenes, irrelevant puzzles, and helping out Seraphites for no reason other than they saved her. It broke my heart playing the game the first time, I had to play it again to see if i missed anything and if i was going crazy that they truly did this to a what-could've-been amazing series. The people who find this game to be a masterpiece lie to you, deny flaws, and crap on any opinions against the game, which is another dealbreaker for me. This could've been game of the decade, but instead they went and took any love for the series and threw it out the window. This game IS NOT for the casual gamer, for it asks way too much of you, takes up too much time, makes you forget scenes because it will have a flashback or something else right when conflict reaches a peak, or just doesn't focus on the story. You have to be attentive to this game 24/7 to catch every detail you need. I beg to anyone who decides to play this game to please not deny the flaws, for criticism is the only way we will be able to see improvements in the next game. Thank you

I've played the game twice and while the first time you wanted to see how it would end once you know the story a second walk-through feels not worth the time. I don't see the need for a 3rd game. The game is groundbreaking in so many different areas, gameplay, visuals, audio, all 10/10, no doubt, but for me the story is a huge let down, and was a way to shoe horn Abby into the story, while Laura Bailey does a fantastic job as Abby, I just do not like the character, I feel that the death of Joel should have been taken, and put at the end of the game, or at the start of a Part 3, Part 2 should've been focused on Abby, with the aftermath of the firefly massacre, and being a solider within the WLF, build her character, build her character arc, it sets up for this revenge story Naughty Dog were desperate to do and would've fit perfectly into a Part 3

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gameplay is very good. Graphic, whole flood city and other areas is amazing - great job. Music is very good.
As most of disappointed players I can complain mostly on scenario.
    - Killing Joel in such way was simply wrong
    - So brutal revenge on Joel after so many years (as Abby) is also weird
    - from my perspective this game would be very short, because as Abby I would killed Ellie and Tommy after Joel's dead, because why keep alive two people which are close to person which We brutally killed in front of they eyes - that's cruel and stupid.
    - First half of Abby's campaign is simply boring and took me over a two week to move forward. During that time we are playing as person which We don't like or even hate... later this slightly changed because of more action.
Main characters make stupid, unlogic choices during the game.
That story have also some good sides - player can compare/confront both sides during whole game and try understand reasons whey Abby/Ellie make their choices. Lev story was interesting at some point.

In my opinion - whole scenario is, let say... original, but original doesn't mean it's good and scenario writer lead this game in wrong direction - this is not a "hate", that's only my opinion.
Game is very popular and make a lot of noise in the games world, but that's not mostly a "good noise" and financial success is based only because a lot of people(including me) waited for this game almost half decade after amazing first game.
Writer let window open for Part 3, but I'm sure that will not be such successful opening like Part 2. I'm not even sure that TLOU IP can be saved after Part 2...

The story devolves so quickly, the player is pushed into a nonsensical duality motif for which, why ruin the flow of the story and the well established characters with such an unneeded change of pace?

But the way the story flows is very abrupt leaving the player without any real time to appreciate the smaller things. And when you play as Abby 1/3 the way through the game it gives no warning to it. And the ending has to be the worst pay off of all time. Ellie's fails to get revenge, loses her fingers and, can't even play her guitar. And in the final flashback it's revealed that her and Joel were able to start rebuilding a working relationship as psuedo father-daugter and it's really out of order when you put it into perspective. I just wish it had a better way of portraying parallels between Ellie and Abby without shoving it in your face. Also why is Mel going on missions pregnant?!! There's no reason for her to be anywhere else but to be home relaxing and waiting for the baby to arrive. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, this game, this is a hard thing to critique, unlike another persons, I wont insult anyone in here. I will critique 3 important things I consider important for this game, soudntrack, gameplay and story-telling. So, soundtrack, this soundtrack was not as good as the first game's. We could not really feel Santaolalla a lot in this one, not even in the main menu, only in the ending credits, so the music was not that of a thing, 6/10 in soundtrack. Now gameplay, the same thing as in the first game (which I really liked), it was a really good mix : how you manage the weapons, the things you could do, really nice, and as I already explained this gameplay in the first game critique, I wont do it here, 8.5/10 on gameplay. And now, story-telling, so, first thing, Joel's death. It doesn't bother me the fact that they've killed him, what really bothers me is HOW they killed him. In the first game we saw that he didn't trust anyone, he almost didn't trust in Bill, his friend. But now he says his name, he says where he lives blah blah blah. Now, lets think, Abby's father gets shot, just ONE shot and Joel didn't even knew he was Abby's father or anything, and how does he have to pay for that? Nothing, only a lot of hits in the skull with a golf club, great. Then, the thing about Yara, that mission when we have to look for medicines for her, that was one hour totally lost since she ends up dying, so....you know, that part was just so the game could cost 60 dollars. Then the ending, you can say that the lesson of "Revenge is not good" was ok, but, this was not the game to include that, this game was about to make a cure to the Cordyceps, and now, nobody cares about the cure. If somehow the Lord gave me a second chance a that moment, I would prevent this game from being real. Thats all I can say, 61/100 Expand

    - bad narration and a lot of plot holes.

How this can be rated at 94% blows my mind. It had some interesting moments within the story but it was so slow and seemed to have limited gameplay. All walking around and cinematics. New characters weren't really developed and the game overall was boring. Very disappointed as I eagerly awaited this one.

Quite a good game. Yes, there is LGBTQ+ theme, but that doesn't bore as much as people say. Pretty boring in the second part, but still counts - couple of epic moments. Must play, but game not only contains of pros, it also got cons.

Then the internet shows you the game is no good. Lets go over the game first. Gameplay: The game is challenging if you play the ground mode. But the same time, the graphic is pretty nice and beautiful. The A.I in Last Of Us 2 is hella smart and overhaul communication for A.I. Dogs is really stunning animated :). This game is brutal this is what the game does. The combat is really good. I'm geld the developer balanced the game every well. This game also attention the details. Story: The story is garbage. I'm sorry to say this, yes we know the story is going to be trash and awful weak character.
You play as Ellie AND ABBY. Holy mother of god you really gonna say: "Abby is a good character in my opinion." No. Abby kills Joel with a GOLD CLUB. I don't know what to say anymore. The writing is awful. Also the pacing is going to hell.

Overall, this game have some problem...for example: story, pacing and character. This example have big problem. But i do like the stunning animation, combat, smart A.I, graphic.

I play Last Of Us 2 start to finished but...this is the game I don't really like. We gonna see Part 3 for this. I'm just not looking forward too.....

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us has some pretty good high value here and there for a medium that is often pretty poor. From excelent uses of color in dramatic moments (the red room, the camera tricks in the last phase) to dramatically powerfull symbology and use of recorrent images. I cannot deny that the team behind it did some astouding work in some regards, but it is also undeniable that those good feats are more due to talented individual artists (that unfortunatelly were not well paid during production) than of any concrete/ well organized vision.

Videogame storytelling is still strugling to be respected in counterpart to its movie and literature brothers, and the last of us is not a good example of one that stands out from the crowd. The game suffers from just too many poor editing choices (the game is to long, and there are scenes that could have really won with a good editor) and plotholes that easily make any telespectator lose his suspension of disbelief. But even if those more ''technicall'' dificulties of production were removed (there was no need for the false ending) the story itself does not bring nothing new to the table. Sure, the idea of playing as the villain you were initially hunting can open interesting new possibilities, but the overall message is still a shallow ''Vengeance is bad''. There are many stories that speak of such themes with more interesting lens, and as a screenwriting undegraduate I can atest that this sort of metaphor the game proposes is a common mistake with beginners.

To conclude: the last of us part 2 really needed a editor. It would have made the game greatly superior to what it is now (there is a reason why Holywood has diferent editors for everything possible) but even them, it is not really a outstanding work on its own, and there are games/literature/movies that perform this sort of vision in a more nuanced and innovative way.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Plot holes, shallow characters, missed opportunities. In a zombie game where no one dies from a zombie, diversity reigns supreme. Except not really, because the two main characters are white women and the Hispanic guy only knows one swear word. Where were my zombie hoards that were hinted at? I upgraded Ellie and then was forced to replay the same stupid story from Abby's point of view sans upgrades. I never got to use all of the weapons because I was ping ponged between characters. I would never replay this game because the story was so boring. You can skip cutscenes but you can't skip the slow walking areas and there are a lot of them. What a waste of money. The ending looked like two crack heads fighting in an alley. Truly pathetic. I give it a 3 for gameplay, a 2 for graphics, and a 0 for story. Expand

Un must play.

As you can see, I generally disliked the story and plot, I believe the game drags a lot, especially in the Abby sections they go in for way too long. It was incredibly frustrating to have to play as Abby for that long and when you’re finally done you have to beat up Ellie the person you’re supposed to be playing as, I feel like Naughtydog wants us to sympathize with Abby and almost in a way says that we’re the bad guys. This is a revenge story, revenge already!

At the same time though I loved the exploration, the more open ended level design worked wonderfully, the level of painstaking detail in this game is absolutely staggering. This is the most detailed game I’ve played to date and that part of the game shines the brightest in my eyes. In During gameplay I was fully immersed, only to be taken out of the immersion by the story. The storytelling through things the player finds in the game world is far superior to the actual story of the game and I don’t believe that’s a good thing. In conclusion, if you’re gonna play this game for the story, don’t, it retroactively makes the story of the first game worse and is not worth purchasing the game for in the slightest. But if you’re someone who can look past the story, and you play games more for the fun of it, I do in fact recommend this game.

This game’s story absolutely sucked. Its not what the first game was. Instead of following a relationship that set the story, it feels like I’m watching a movie, which is not good. Its like the characters read a script and acted out their roles perfectly. The game’s ending hurt even more since not only did I hate Ellie by the end of it, it was the equivalent of Mirror’s Edge Catalyst’s ending, where you technically didn’t accomplish **** I know the message is revenge is bad, but that’s a damn lie. I never had any consequences when I seeked revenge, and I always got my revenge, so Ellie ain’t **** compared to me (I like to make jokes.) Now, can we talk about how the game tried to push an agenda? I don’t play games to be taught a lesson or have something pushed to me, I play to have fun (or I guess not fun, but engaging since Naughty Dog banned the word fun) but this wasn’t fun at all. I don’t care if its story driven, I just want a good time, and this game just left me wondering if Naughty Dog would ever come back from it.

I would have preferred a relative of Marlene from the first game hunt down Joel, not a daughter of a very minor character from the first game. When the audience considers the carefully written character arch from the first game, any character in part two that kills a character from part one should be immediately be made a villein. Like i said before if this was the beginning to a new IP for ND the story would have made you ask the questions it intended to ask. However, after the death of Joel, that person became the bad guy. Where the story fails is in its persistence to make Abby (lady that killed Joel) seem to be a hero. When in reality most the audience members believe her to be wickedly evil for brutally murdering him in front of his only living daughter. the reason this game get a four is for the amount of detail, polish, and overall finish the game appears to have in every aspect but the story. And with ND games Story is half the rating. In summary the story of part two disgraces the first game all the while maintaining a very good game play experience throughout the entire game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Greetings from Russia.

I quitted playing video games 4 years ago due to work and lack of time. The last thing I played was the first part of TLoU and as 99% of all us I loved the characters and the game itself, every time I remember its plot and my gaming experience of It I get warm feelings in my heart. As soon I finished the first part, sold my PS 3 I decided to 100% buy a new upcoming console to play TLoU 2 when it comes out, I haven’t thought about and waited for other games than TLoU 2 since then.

August 2020, I am old as **** 26 years, childhood and uni years are far away from where I am now, responsibilities, bills to cover, work that I do not enjoy. Anyway, I specially took a vacation for 3 weeks, bought the latest Sony 4k screen and PS 4 Pro - TLoU 2 edition. Unboxing felt so amazing, I got tears in my eyes for such a sentimental moment, the kid that slept inside me for years was so happy.

The start of the game is great, the graphics are amazing and I feel so excited to be back with the characters that lived in my heart for all these years: Joel and Ellie. I expect that for the next couple of days there will be only me and their new adventure, no outer world, but me reflecting on the cool plot twists, dying supporting characters and the **** realistic human nature at the time of the crisis.

I saw trailers with Ellie laying down in blood,
she promises to kill ‘em all and I was 100% sure that she will take revenge for her new girlfriend. As most of you I was so shocked that Joel is was being killed so ruthlessly and the first signs of the emptiness inside started to echo my heart. The fact that I played for Abby in the beginning was not a coincidence and I prayed that I wouldn’t have to do it again later in my walkthrough. Next 11 or 12 hours were great. I didn’t have any feeling of mercy while killing dogs and screaming friend’s names people because to the same extent as Ellie loved Joel, same did I and I wanted to take revenge and hoped everything is finished with the death of this ugly Abby character, i don’t buy this ‘eye for an eye and the world is blind’ thing, all of us in such conditions as Ellie are able to kill for our beloved ones and don’t regret while taking revenge.

But it went as it went and when after a cutscene in the theatre the control is given back to Abby I realized that the next 11-12 hours I must learn her side of the story, play for her and feel sorry for her because I knew that the game requires 25 hours in total. The problem is I DON’T GIVE A **** ABOUT HER STORY, MOTIVATION, FRIENDS, FATHER, BOYFRIEND, DOG, HULK HANDS, FEELINGS, VOICE AND SO ****ING ON. All those people deserve to die. So the game after this becomes some kind of a torture untill the very last levels where Ellie is back at your control, the boy with arrows as a partner of Abby causes more sympathy than her, but he is not a ‘game changer’.

In the end Ellie doesn’t kill Abby, she leaves her to go and comes back to the house left by her stupid girlfriend.

TO SAY THAT I WAS PISSED IS TO SAY NOTHING. JUST SIMULTANEOUS EMPTINESS INSIDE MY HEART. Even when I walke through the first Ellie’s half of the game for the second time. Expectations that lasted for several years were ruined and I drank 2 bottles of vodka not because I am Russian on the vacation, I drink once in 2-3 months, but to silence the pain caused by the plot of the TLoU 2.

5 vodkas out 10, now I need to sell my PS 4 Pro and hope that in 7 years I ll be still there to play PS 5 PROTURBOMEGADRIVE HD THE LAST OF US PART 3 ABBY **** BURNS IN HELL LIMITED EDITION. Stay strong comrades.
