This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I believe 7 is a fair score for the following reasons. I'm going to start by saying a really don't care that they put LGBTQ+ content in this game, I believe that if it doesnt compromise the story by focusing purely on that content when there is obviously more important things happening I don't care. Main things I don't like about the game is as follows: 1. I'm sorry but that was an incredibly stupid way for Joel to die, he got himself into a stupid situation and seemed to immediately trust a bunch of strangers... stop tip kids, if someone asks you to go into their basement... don't. 2. I didn't like the over dramatic relationship stuff, it just felt odd. 3. Don't ask players to play the villain who kills everyones favourite character 4. Again, lgbtq+ content is fine but abby's big muscley body just looks strange, it's like looking at a heavy steroid user. Things I do like are the beautiful graphics and great game mechanics. Expand

Last of us 2 is a technological masterpiece. Everything works as it should, the game looks and plays amazing. But in regards to story and characters, it's definitely step-down from the frist game. I just wasn't invested in the story at all for some reason. I still enjoyed playing it but in comparison to the first game, it's kind of a letdown.

For me, the most entertainment came from the dynamic gore system, where enemies have 5 destructible points (limbs and head). In a funny, almost masochistic way, it was fun blowing up limbs while your enemies cried out to their fallen comrades. It made me feel like the world saw my character as a threat, which is a rare feeling that few games capture.

Overall, it succeeds in areas where the first game failed, and failed where the first game succeeded. Definitely worth the bargain bin price.

Expand

I don’t have time to write a long review but I recently played through this game and I don’t think it deserved all the hate it got. Because while there is one big problem which is that killing hundreds of people and then not killing Abby at the end felt pretty dumb, the overall gameplay and other aspects of the story are really solid.

The Last Of Us Part II has a fatal flaw: It doesn't know its a video game. While seemingly telling a story about the circulation of violence, it doesn't reflect on the actual violence committed by the player. ND wants to be brave and challenge the players expectations with a duo-narrative but in the end it all falls because the game just tells us the way it is but doesn't show us.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Last of Us 2 gives me very conflicting feelings. The game is very flawed and messy. Whilst the graphics are some of the best I've ever seen in a next gen title and I love the gameplay, the narrative and characters are mixed. The main problem with the story is the pacing. It's so bad. Being required to play as Abby for 10 hours is absurd. Even worse, Abby's subplot isn't even relevant. This is why the message on trust is murky. Joel is killed off way too fast. Killing him off isn't bad in concept. It's the execution that completely failed. My question is; Why is Joel killed off before it's revealed that Joel killed Abby's Dad. This portrays Abby as unsympathetic and hard to feel bad for. Ellie is such a fantastic character. A sequel where Ellie is the main playable character frustrates me because I can see the masterpiece it was so destined to be. Ellie makes this game from a 6 to a 7. She's definitely one of the most tragic characters in gaming. The ending where she finds out she can't play her guitar Joel gave her because she lost fingers because revenge took over her. And this is the Last of Us 2 I wanted. A mostly flawless masterpiece with stunning graphics, smooth gameplay and likeable characters. Expand

It made the 2nd half of the game extremely unenjoyable, all I did was rush through everything as fast as I humanly could on survivor. The game play is fun but simply copy and pasted from the first game. Honestly I do like the drama but nothing is added to this world, only one new infected and one unique zombie boss that honestly was one of the best parts of the game. It simply doesn’t feel like an apocalypse. Not saying it has to be like days gone hordes in it but like, not make the zombies in the backseat. The sex scene as well was simply unneeded, all it did was expose one person as a cheater and another as a emotionless **** who never can be redeemed. They try to show two sides of a story but end up making one side simply and utterly unlikable because they never learn their lesson. It was nice to see representation of LGBTQ+ in a game and not have it forced down the players throat and be sjw like, but one character not being transphobic doesn’t make them a good person, again, they never reflect on their choices and never gives the other side an apology or anything. I admittedly maybe I rate it a 4 because of the high expectations I had for this game, but that was because the 1st was the only game ever to actually make me feel attached to the point I cried. It is okay for the fact for certain people to die in this game died, but the manner of which they died, in a dramatic and cinematic game this is, it’s just wrong and a slap in our faces. I love ya naughty dog but please, please, PLEASE if there is a part 3, don’t hurt us like this again you still have solid building blocks these characters CAN BE REDEEMED AND LOVED AGAIN. I bought last of us 1 for both ps3 and 4 and bought last of us 2 the day it came out, but if the third feels like how 2 felt, I won’t buy it. To finish this off on a high note too all the actors and programmers of this game I cherish and love the effort and work put into this game, everything but the actual progression and how things were handled in the story were absolutely gorgeous, no one deserved any hate for who they portrayed, it seriously got me through this game and it was as perfect as the 1st. Neil if you see this please don’t leave this game ik what I say is maybe harsh, but you have what it takes, you made the first game, don’t let this game make you spiral. Your ideas for this game were good, like I said that alternate ending sounded amazing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game only gets 6/10 for some bad reasons. They have only 1 mode for the game, which is story. Unfortunately, this game has one of the worst stories that I have seen in a video game, where they kill off any potential. Joel dies, and they have an unnecessary sex scene in the game for no reason other than run time and "plot progression". The game play outside of the story is okay, but sometimes it feels like a walking simulator, but the guns feel good and the vibrations from the controller feel realistic when I do an action. The graphics are amazing for a PlayStation 4 game and it runs smoothly, which is already an edge over other certain games. If they had multiplayer on launch or in a day 1 patch the game would feel better, but the only thing on the multiplayer is rumors any it was a separate game and not part of the original. Overall, it killed itself at launch. Expand

Great graphics, voice acting and game mechanics. Exploration is not rewarded.

The big issue is that the story tries to subvert expectations but does so in a ham fisted way. People invested in the characters from the first game will find the subverting wrenching and brutal. Attempts to justify the narrative are also ham fisted. Story and exploration aside the game is well put together.

Story-wise this game is a mess, relies heavily on shock value, the trailers clearly tried tricking the fanbse that you'd have more time playing as Joel, and overall it has so many other narrative problems that are worthy of being in a Netflix-original show. It really is that underwhelming.
I wasn't really a fan of the first TLOU game but at least I was looking forward to see what was going to happen next, in TLOU2 things felt like they kept dragging on and on and on and on.
But credit where credit is due, technologically speaking the game is a true work of art. it looks good, it plays good, the little details really sell the realism the game's going for and it has a lot of accessibility options that are always well received.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review is written by someone who thought the first game was overrated.
Played it the first time, didn't think it was awful like how the internet described it to be. Played it a second time to platinum it, I noticed flaws that bothered me. The setup for Joel's death was really pathetic; Joel would've never saved Abby and Tommy wouldn't have told strangers who they were if you've played the first game. Way out of character for them. Dina was a really interesting character. Sadly she was pushed aside midway in Ellie's story; her reason for it was an obvious setup for what was to come if you paid attention to Abby and her friend's backgrounds.
Now, let's get to Abby. I DID NOT hate her. Although her reason for killing Joel was understandable, her father being the doctor that almost killed Ellie was an overstretch. Her love interest Owen seemed chill but wasn't interesting, just like the rest of Abby's friends. Her adventure was actually more thrilling than Ellie's. As a character she's alright; I was actually interested into where she was exploring and her dialogue with her friends felt authentic. Lev and Yara's backgrounds were really fascinating but in the end, they didn't feel impactful.
The worldbuilding is a massive improvement over the original. The Scars and WLF felt much more threatening than the infected.
To cut it short, the message is clear but executed bad. If the game were to end with Ellie living happily with Dina and her child and Abby and Lev reaching the fireflies, I would've been fine with that. Let Ellie not get her revenge and begin to process it and grow stronger would've made sense. Instead, she ends up going off to find Abby--who was kidnapped by a group with Lev--and ends up freeing prisoners along the way, OUT OF VENGEANCE. So the message is vengeance makes you do horrible things, but also good things like free the prisoners and Abby????
    Yeah that's about it.

the story is good. yes it is good. is it enjoyable ? not all of it
the story is nowhere near as good as TLOU1
combat is better but the plot is so weird man
the whole time playing as abby i actually didnt mind but when she got back to hunt Ellie down i really hated it and i dont get why we have to fight Ellie. speaking of Ellie i loved seeing her descend into madness trying to take revenge for Joel but i loved that she ends up forgiving Abby and lettiing her inner demons go. THAT IS A GOOD STORY FOR WHAT WE ARE GIVEN. the level design is overwhelming and really weird sometimes which is why i do not want to replay it cos i just dont want to play with a headache most of the time again. CAN i just say that is is so boring to force myself to play through meeting Abbys friends and all already knowing they are dead..... pointless Abby narrative, and i almost forgot abt the Seraphites cos they DONT MATTER AT ALL! with that said i can understand what the story is going for and i can somewhat appreciate it just not all that much..... abit sad

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hearing fans say this game is a complete 'Masterpiece' makes me think the TLOU community is completely blind or delusional. Let's start with the Pros, the gameplay is fun and straightforward, similar to the old game, and it's nice to play as Ellie more and see her fighting as she's grown up now. The game is beautiful, from the scenery to the world, the character's faces, the weapons, and everything. The game is a masterpiece... graphics-wise. Abby is a proper protagonist that truly makes you feel anger while experiencing the game as Ellie. Let's continue with the Cons. The game's new characters are awful. We are forced to talk with characters who are boring and soulless on both sides of each character (Abby and Ellie). Only once in the story did I find any side character that seemed interesting, and that was Lev. All the other characters felt like just empty puppets. I had a deeper connection with a Clicker than I did with Dina. She was only there to give Ellie a love interest and to help her move on... and she didn't even do that as Ellie goes back to get Abby at the end. Jesse was an odd character as they lied in the trailer about his location (It was Joel in the trailer and Jesse in the game). His only existence in the game was just so Ellie had a kid to take care of to help her get past the trauma from Abby. Only 1 new side character remained interesting and that was Lev. He had an interesting story and a good connection with Abby that helped us feel for both of them and we were able to understand both of these characters and relate to them. The others we have no clue about, they just appeared from thin air with no weight to them to help us relate. They were purely there to just stop Ellie from continuing the cycle of hate. Narrative. What a sloppy way of continuing a story. Now, the game is about Ellie, yes, but, because it is about her doesn't mean you have to replace everything from the old game. Joel's death was known by everybody that it was going to happen as he needed to pay for his actions and death with the consequence, but to do it the way they did by him sloppy giving out his name and accepting these new random people into a house on a snowy mountain. That isn't Joel. Joel isn't the type of person to suddenly warm up and trust everybody as you can see throughout the first game. Just as the apocalypse is starting (With Sara) Joel is already only looking for himself and his family, abandoning the random family with a child. From Surviving 25 years in the apocalypse you're telling me that he warms up to people in only 5 years? 5 YEARS? Even after 20 years, in the first game, When Ellie and Joel leave Bill's and encounter the scavengers. The scavenger cries out in pain to help and Joel, with no hesitation, revs the engine and drives straight into him. The equivalent of what Joel did in TLOU2, in this situation, is as if he got out of the car and said to the scavenger 'Everything Okay?'. It doesn't make sense in a million years. There was not even a funeral for Joel, we saw him die brutally just to see a black screen, and then to a grave, which felt like disrespect to both the player and the character. Even ignoring this, they could've vastly improved the game's structure by putting each Flashback first for Ellie and Joel to help us reconnect with this world after 7 years of delays and waiting. Abby's story was important but, was unbearable, forcing us to play a character who killed a beloved character is just cruel. They could've even made us play as Abby first then Ellie shows that Abby kills Joel. That would've made the game much more bearable to play. With how everything was structured in this game, it felt pointless, from the start to the end, everything that we did in the game felt like nothing apart from everybody in the game and the real world being depressed.

The game was unbearable for a lot of time. Wish I could understand this is a masterpiece from a beloved franchise.

If you could define divisive, it would be this game you’ll see many reviews both positive and negative but I think that there are a lot of aspects of this game that are worthwhile while others are merely disgraceful to what the last games president set. Most of the Eli stuff was good as well as the relationships she had with every character that was with her butt cutting it in the middle of the game to go to. Abbi did my interest in the game so severely that I barely even finished it. You see many people whining about any LGBTQ representation, but honestly even if you care it’s not over bearing at all it’s not treated any special way. It’s just treated normal.

I think they tried to make a controversial story but the execution I think is more negative than not. It didn't make me think or longer on the story, it just made me think this game could've been cut in half and still been as effective.

The gameplay is very solid. Guns, melee, stealth i.e. all the combat is very satisfying and fluid for me. However that's kind of all there is. Story sections with characters walking and talking and then combat sections. It's nice that there's more combat in this one and less puzzles but it's story feels so forced.

I could see what was coming ahead and when I hoped to be surprised I was not. They force you to spend time with the opposing side to make you feel for both of them however I think it just wasn't done naturally. It feels forced like they are cramming Abbie and her very odd personality down your throat. Showing her pros and cons for a very long section of the game where all I wanted was to get back to Ellie, the character I had followed throughout the last game and expected to do so in this one. If we had smaller Abbie sections, I think it could've hit us much better but forcing 8 hours of Abbie actually makes me feel less for her.

The game itself is a technical achievement. Incredible visuals, awesome combat but the experience is let down by the forced story moments that outstay their welcome. 5/10.

The previously shallow combat system has a number of additions that make both fighting and stealth gameplay more satisfying and fun while traversing and exploring the world is more dynamic thanks to the introduction of physics-based puzzles and the ability to crouch and go prone. There is also the matter of accessibility options to consider, which allow players to customize their experience outside of a simple difficulty slider. Visual, auditory, and control customization makes the game easier for anyone to play. I had a blast playing the game and planning strategies for dealing with certain enemies.
That being said, this game is majorly hindered by its own story. It's a clunky, overly ambitious setup with shallow side characters and unsatisfying storylines that really make it a chore to play through, especially considering how many more cutscenes you have to sit through compared to the first game. Without spoiling any of the individual plot points, this game's story is a 180-degree turn from its predecessor, trading in an organic, beautifully developed relationship for a hodgepodge of flashbacks and inconsequential side missions that attempt to feed the players context in piecemeal doses while developing virtually none of its characters and giving the player very little reason to care for anyone, its protagonist included. Considering Neil Druckmann also wrote the beloved predecessor to this game, the sloppy pacing and static characters are astonishing if not outright offensive. While I expected to have some complicated feelings after its conclusion, I found myself mostly annoyed and frustrated at its lack of compelling motiviation or satisfying conclusions.
In short, I did have a fun time with this game in the thirty-some hours it took me to complete it. But around the halfway point, the story took a turn for the worse and I found myself annoyed at having to play through more of it just to finish the story. It left a bad taste in my mouth and for that reason, I have to rate it in the midrange because as technically impressive as it is, it's hard to enjoy a story-driven game with such messy writing.

The Last of Us part 2 is an incredibly beautiful game (graphically), yet it resonates in a vastly different manner to its counterpart with a much bleaker, much grittier, and more violent outlook. Whilst the first game naturally had these elements, it seems to be dialled up by about 10 here and pulls some very heavy punches within the first hour and until the end.

Now this is not a problem in of itself (heavy narratives are perfectly fine), the problem stems from a lack of those brief flickers of hope and happiness we see in a world full of death and despair that were so memorable in the original. And whilst there are some moments that are indeed like that and others that are designed to have the same effect, they are so few and far between in The Last of Us part 2 that the events that transpire before or after tend to sour them.

This is a game where I had to take regular breaks from playing because I became so exhausted and exasperated with what was happening over the course of the game. Narratively, the story is lacklustre, their themes overtly grim and any threads that the previous instalment had to offer are immediately discarded. Characters are seemingly weaker in context, with Ellie no longer being the cocky, smart mouthed teen we loved (which is understandable given the time frame and events that occur but it is still key to her personality), whilst others are practically non-existent and lack any development or interaction. The introduction of new individuals attempts to get us to be sympathetic to them and their reasoning whilst expecting us to forgive and forget (continually showing us Ellie having PTSD flashbacks) what caused this game to transpire in the first place.

The circumstances these characters find themselves in often defy logic and mostly feel like a push to get a rise emotionally without the narrative to back it up, the extent of which will see certain individuals lose all sense of caution and awareness to force them into situations that they would otherwise not find themselves in. Meanwhile, Ellie finally finds some semblance of happiness and a normal life despite her trauma in the end, only to throw it all away by her own choice in a stupid decision that has no pay off and repeats a previous plot point that also went nowhere and lead to more death and unhappiness.

Gameplay wise, there is no further evolution from prior, apart from maybe a few more animations, polish, and ways to traverse the world or in combat. AI seems to be much stupider this time around, with your companions being the most egregious as they block you from trying to get in cover or take a shot which is very confusing given how good it was previously. Meanwhile, the second half of the game where you switch characters had me bored out of my mind and was entirely too long, to which it felt like filler.

Overall, however, I would not say this is a terrible game as others might see it. Thematically it is a Last of Us game; the gameplay is solid and the voice acting, animation, world and environments are amazing. However, it is such a departure from the character themes in the previous instalment that such passion is very understandable. There are elements here that I really enjoyed, however it mostly just left me hollow and emotionless, especially given how it ended.

My 7 score is because I compared it with the Last of Us part 1. Everything felt similar. Except the story.
I didn't like that there was so many collectables in the game too
While the connection felt natural. And I personally believe that the link between 2 stories and having 2 different views in the game play was genius idea. But it was little bit over. It was too much salt.
Overall I think it is worth playing

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start this off by saying the first part was incredibly overhyped, it had only two highlights: main characters and graphics. The story itself was nothing to write home about (still, better than average), but the relationship development between the characters made it worth experiencing. Gameplay was honestly abysmal for such a highly rated game.

It's pretty much the same thing here, vastly improved, but still very basic gameplay, truly amazing graphics. However, the story-characters situation is reversed, the story itself is very good, but characters are often very sappy, stupid, tendentious and, quite often, boring. Though I admit I liked the universally hated Abby, she's the only one with any real development.

It's hard to convey what I mean by that and keep it short, it's also really not worth it since prolly no one will read it anyway, apart from resident SJWs and fanbois who will downvote it to hell, but I'll try.

I'll focus on the bullet points I brought up previously with a few examples, keeping it light on spoilers, mostly referring to minor details present in the game (which are the main way that they're trying to send THE MESSAGE through).

*So, about a fourth into the game you're playing as Ellie, trekking through a city with Dina, discussing how they're going to own a farm, sheep and so on, even though mere seconds ago they nearly fell into multiple traps, fought LOADS of enemies and they're going through hostile territory. The perfect moment for making future plans and showing THEY'RE ALSO HUMAN.

*Later on, Abbynator teams up with a trans boy, Lev, who journeys to his mother, who rejected him because of her traditional beliefs, to make her accept him being trans. They quarrel, he kills her by accident, his sister comes up to him and tells him it was self-defense. So it's ok to force others to accept that you're trans, sound logic.

*Overall, Abbynator, while being the best character IMO, has some tendentious moments as well. She crushes all the puny men in her way, most of the time they don't have a chance against her. Of course, she also gets crucified by the end of the game, along with her little trans martyr and refuses to fight Ellie. And pulverizes everything with her bare fists, she no need baby man tools.

*Only women are capable of forgiving.

*Apart from Abby's father (who's dead), there's not a single positive white or black male character in the game, all of them turn into **** at one point or another. There are positive males though, so there's that.

*Good uncle Tommy, which always did right by Ellie, at the end forces her to seek revenge. Makes perfect sense, especially in the light of him previously trying to trick her into staying home so she wouldn't go out.

*Two tiny, but STRONG women are going around lifting, by the look of it, 300 pound (or maybe even more) doors all by their lonesome. This is a very minor and gamey detail, but it's just so ridiculous that I couldn't omit it.

That should suffice, the game is chockfull of moments like these, which take away from the experience IMO and could've been done better, especially with the game relying so heavily on it's story.

Also regarding what all the fan bois are raving about, that is Abbynator terminating Joel and her whole story arc, it's hard to sympathize with her knowing Joel's motivations and the way Fireflies received him after going through all his toils in the first game, but she couldn't have known that and is fitting for her character.

With all that said, the plot itself has some weak points as well, like cheap overreliance on romantic and sexual relations between characters and cheap drama.
In one case, extremely cheap, backed by bad writing. I'm thinking of the scene in which Ellie and Dina go to a theater where Dina explains she's shocked with Ellie's immunity, only to reveal few sentences later that she's pregnant. Instant drama. This scene imitates **** movies so hard it's hilarious, it would be acceptable if Dina was established as a drama queen but she's not and it makes no **** sense whatsoever.

And of course, it's far from being original, while the first game was an amalgamation of different stories with some original bits and pieces, this is a straight up old school western, with a clearly biased modern social commentary tacked on.

To sum it all up, good game; average story; basic, linear gameplay that only serves as a bridge between parts of the story; worth experiencing if you've got a PS4 or have a mate with one and a lot of time on his hands (this game is LONG and drags on because of the poor gameplay). They should really be making movies instead of games.

Edit: Oh, and it's excruciatingly boring, combat is fine, has a good feel to it, but stealth has no depth and it's unfortunately the better option most of the time.

Give this game a 6. Story is ass, everything else is alright. Graphics are superb! Neil really thinks he's some philosophical or godlike director. Kojima worked his ass off to get where he is at now. You will never be a Kojima or a Cory Barlog. Also has the Most pointless death to a main character in history of video games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In its own right, TLoU2 is a good, maybe even very good game: beautiful graphics, stunning lightings, very dark (I love dark!), unforgiving, disturbing, a gritty revenge story, ... The game mechanics which worked fine in the previous ones are the same, with a few welcome new ones.

As a stand-alone game, I would have given it an 8 or even 9. But TLoU2 isn't its own game .., but the sequel of one of the, if not THE, best game ever. And as a sequel, IMO it fails to reach the perfection of its predecessor.

As must have been spoiled already everywhere, Joel dies by the end of the intro. In itself, it was a shock, a sad and dark (did I mention I love dark?) surprise. But that doesn't mean it has to be a bad idea. Just like in GoT or the Walking Dead, killing main & beloved characters is an excellent way to bring the player into the story, and is a very powerful triggering factor for the main storyline. Much more than the death of another "close" character which we would just have discovered (Dina, Jesse, even Tommy). Kudos to the writers for the guts to pull such a move!

But courage alone doesn't always pay off. One hour into the game, we are left with only half of what made Part 1 so good: the evolving relationship between Ellie & Joel. And in the next 20 or so hours of play of Part 2, nothing or no one will fill the void left by Joel's removal from the game. We don't care a second about the new character (Dina, Jesse, Yara, Lev, ...) and certainly not Abby, Joel's killer whom we play for almost half the game. I think the only supporting cast member which the game really makes likable is ... Alice. At least that's the only one who's death (afterward) saddened me.

Never do we reach the emotional heights of Part 1, although we sometimes have a glimpse of it in some flashback scenes about ... how Ellie & Joel's relationship soured over the years between 1 and 2 because of Joel's secret (lying to Ellie about what happened in the Fireflies' hospital). And that made me wonder how THAT story would have made a much better Part 2 than what we got. Joel could have been killed (after all, his whole storyline is one of redemption), although much later into the game, even by Abby as a playable character. At least, had we been playing Abby for some ten hours BEFORE the murder, knowing her background, maybe we could have liked her and been torn between her and Joel in a duel that would leave one dead. I understand that the writers wanted us to contemplate both sides of the story, but literally forcing us to play Abby (whom I wanted to see dead from Joel's murder to the finale scene) AFTER she killed Joel didn't work. At least for me ...

Another issue I had was the game's length. It is too long. OK, most of the levels are superb, but in most cases, the pace of the game feels like "go clear that level and come back to base camp to move on with the story", while in Part 1, the story unfolded both within gameplay phases AND cutscenes. Besides, although beautiful, several levels felt too far-fetched, more at home in Tomb Raider (burning village), Uncharted (skyscraper's walkway), or even Resident Evil (looking at you, hospital basement's boss). Every time a character said "it isn't far", I knew some floor will crumble under my feet and throw me into some dark (I love dark, btw) basement just for the sake of lengthening the journey.
I would have loved shorter levels, but more focus on character development and storyline.

To conclude, I would strongly recommend that game as a much better & darker (really, I love that) version of Uncharted or Tomb Raider, to anyone who hasn't played Part 1.
But I would warn Part 1's veterans that they will surely be HUGELY disappointed by this game as a much less well-written sequel to its near-perfect predecessor.

The game looks beautiful. The environments, the characters, they look great. The sound and music is fantastic, it really draws you in the moments. The gameplay is largely solid. Very similar to the original. A small is I came across was AI companions moving in your way and pushing you out of hiding. Other than that, the gameplay while solid can get repetitive. My main issue is how the gameplay conflicts with the storytelling.

So where does this game fall apart? The storytelling. Now for a game like this, where the main focus is storytelling, that's a big hurdle to fall down on. This is just a story that didn't need to be told and ultimately lead nowhere. In the first game we grappled with what is right and what is wrong. What would we do for the ones we loved. You struggled with Joel and Ellies growth as characters. This game wrestles with similar issues, but does a much worse job of doing it. It lacks any sort subtlety like the first game and thorws it all in your face. It feels forced. They are so obviously trying to make you feel a certain way that it doesn't feel real. It ultimately feels pointless and you wonder why this even needed to happen?

A lesson to all game developers. When making a sequel for a story based game, ask yourselves why. Will this necessarily expand on the characters and story as a whole in a meaningful way? Is this needed? If the answer is no. Then just leave it be. Just like this series should have been left alone.

So before writing this review I wanted to take my time, digest & think about the whole thing. I did not want to rush in and review this in the heat of the moment out of the fear of acting on impulse and giving a biased score. I'm going to try and be as objective as possible, so buckle up for the ride.

Let's start on a positive note:
The game definitely does not deserve anything below a 6/10 or 6.5/10 however bad you may think it is. The improvements over the first game are very noticeable not only graphics-wise but also from a gameplay and audio standpoint.
The graphics are probably the first thing you'll notice when booting the game up. Naughty Dog always delivers top-notch graphics for however long they've been releasing games on Sony's consoles. They are top dogs (pun intended) in the industry along with very few others such as Rockstar when it comes to attention to detail, illumination, effects, droplets of rain on character's skin, the tracks you leave behind in the snow and everything else that makes games visually pornographic.
The gameplay: chef's kiss; the animations are smooth, transitions blend in so seamlessly when you're changing direction, walking, jogging, sprinting, jumping, crawling, shooting, reloading, diving, swimming or swinging. I simply have no words to describe how good the gameplay actually is and the game should be played at least once for this reason alone! it really is THAT good.
The music is also on par with the first game. Gustavo Santaolalla's magic... Nothing less of excellent. The tunes for this game contribute so much to the atmosphere whether you're in a cutscene, in combat or exploring. The gameplay audio, ranging from the sounds of the guns shooting, breaking glass, walking on snow or stepping in puddles to hearing that blood gushing out when you slice someone's neck with the switchblade. The voice actors also did more than an outstanding job.
In short this is a very polished game and you can see that the delays have been put to good use. Trying to find faults from a technical aspect, (not that they don't exist) is, most of the time, almost like trying to find the needle in the haystack.
Something that I noticed that wasn't as perfect was the A.I. The enemies are now so much more intelligent, they try to flank you in numbers, they check their angles and occasionally watch their back to see if someone is sneaking up on them. The only flaw I noticed is the friendly A.I.: they will act like sitting ducks sometimes and sometimes they sprint right into the face of the enemies while they are screaming: "Where did they go?!" and that is a bit immersion breaking... After beating the game on Survivor (hardest difficulty at the point of me writing this) I can truly say that the A.I has improved by a lot, even though there is still way to go.
During my gameplay I did not use Listen Mode as it would, in my eyes, make the game too casual to play. I won't judge/rate this feature.
There are enough infected battles, some new types as well that have their own "special abilities" and all the returning infected have been overhauled and improved upon: Runners are so much more aggressive now, Stalkers are more terrifying than ever etc. Dogs are also a new addition and bring out new ways on how the player decides to approach certain situations.

I would like to delve deeper into some of the things I mentioned but I also have to dedicate some words to what I didn't fully like, the thing that brings this game down to a 7/10 (at least at this point of me writing this review). The goddamn story, yes. You know this moment was coming. Actually not the whole story, but a big chunk of it that would take the score down by so much. If you haven't played the game yet, proceed with caution, some MAJOR SPOILERS be lurking ahead. Here we go:

First off, let me say that Joel dying isn't the problem... It's the way Joel died, the way he went and how we reached that moment was so out-of-character and more than disrespectful towards the protagonist of the first game. People find all sorts of excuses but sorry, I don't buy any of them.
Getting over that tragic moment is all fine and dandy, until about half-way through the game when the game flashbacks after a major cliffhanger. After that you are forced to play as Abby (Joel's killer) who is the daughter of the surgeon that was supposed to operate on Ellie and which Joel killed in the first game. ND tried to shove her ~15 hours long backstory down our throat and make us like/empathize with a character who we despised literally a couple hours in the game. Just no.
The ending is even more underwhelming, after failing to get revenge the first time, after killing hundreds, the death of Joel, other characters & including losing her friends before reaching this point Ellie decides last second not to kill the person who wronged her.

P.S.: The multiplayer i loved in Part 1 won't be out for who knows how long. Big L in my eyes.

It was easy to believe that these characters that we loved in part 1 were made dumb on purpose and act completly different than you would think if you played the first game 10+ times just to fit the direction of the story.

And it kind of sucks to be honest.

Why did they retconned the ending of Part1? Why did they completely swapped out the two most important characters to replace them with morons? I don't get it. It looks and sounds awesome for sure, yet I can't appreciate the final product at all. Why? Because TLoU was never about looks, sound or even gameplay. Admit it, the gameplay always was mediocre at best. It was the narrative that made it a masterpiece. There was this overreaching major storyarc of saving humanity and there was the evolving relationship between a girl that never learned what true love is and a father who thought that true love died with his daughter years ago...and yet both found what they never expected: True love for each other. And at the end this true love was more important to Joel than humanity itself.

And TLoU2 **** on all of it! It's just a mere revenge story with no giant storyarc that pushes everything forward. Just bitterness back and forth with stupid character writing that really boggled my mind while playing it. Thanks Naughty Dog for destroying a franchise. I'm really glad the first one will always be a perfect interactive movie that didn't need a sequel anyway. It got a sequel...but I'll erase it out of my memory for sure.

My score is for the technical standards alone. The Story/Writing gets a bold 1/10 from me.
