Feels a bit crap having to write this given how stellar the first chapter of The Last of Us was, but here we are. The Last of Us part 2 is not a 10/10 experience in my books. The Last of Us part 2 is not a 10/10 experience in my books. However, let's start with the positives first. The game is a technical marvel and shines in every aspect in the visual department, framerate is solid and the visuals are varied, vibrant and simply bursting with detail. Gameplay is tense with every enemy feeling like a genuine threat and combat and customisation is deep and engaging. Exploration is deeply encouraged and rewarded in spades making combing every nook and cranny of each new area feel like an effort worth the time to dedicate to it. The voice acting as well, as you would expect, is top notch with the cast bringing their alls to the roles and it truly shows.

Where the game suffers tremendously, is with the story, writing and pacing. The Last of Us 2 is bogged down by it's cliché and poorly written revenge plot with baffling decisions littered all over the 25 hour campaign, some dreadful dialogue and terrible story structure. The story feels awfully rushed and carries almost no weight in comparison to it's predecessor. The cast of characters this time around are incredibly bland, generic and forgotten the moment they exit the screen or are killed off and all of the emotional tension from the first game we have come to love, is disregarded in favour of this bland storyline about the cycle of revenge and the need to remind you every step of the way that violence is not the solution. It truly feels like a child's interpretation of what violence looks like. Furthermore the depth and charm has been all but stripped away from Ellie and the game as whole, and we're left with an unpleasant, miserable husk that made me half wonder if this was the same lass we travelled across the country with in the first game. The writing does improve noticeable in specific sections of the game, and they are noticeable, but that's spoiler territory I'm not going to dive into.

Overall, despite enjoying my time with the game and seeing that it excels in the gameplay, visuals and technical departments, it's bland and forgettable cast coupled with a horribly written, poorly structured plot make the Last of Us Part 2 one of the most conflicting titles I have played in a very long time.

Without spoiling anything because I believe everyone should either wait for sale or find a local place to rent this game (like I did). This game does many things right in terms of game play and graphics but vastly falls short in the story. Wish I could give it a 8-10 but honestly I'm reaching when it comes to the rating I've given. My opinion might not mean much but I felt the need to come here and give a legit review unlike the review bombing. There are many plot holes and lack of good taste in their writing when it comes to forcing their consumers to like Abby as a character, I don't hate her character because I enjoy her as a villain but I really don't like her as they try to portray her as the bad/good guy for some odd reason. A lot can be said but If you really wanna understand what's wrong with it I would recommend renting the game at a local family video (If you have one). Apologies for the lack of unity throughout my review it's pretty all over the place kinda like TLOU2. Thank you for read :) Expand

This game was absolutely masterpiece for about 30 hours. I wanted to give it 10 of 10. And then the end comes. Probably the worst story end which I've seen. And end of story is most important part of story. Sorry Naughty Dog but you bring me back memories on 8th series of GoT and you screw it up even more.

But it doesnt come without a cost, unfortunately the reveal trailer was a let down since it was false advertisement on Joel's behalf, feel betrayed by it , and a huge letdown , by the plot itself if it was introduced in maybe a different way , its amazing , i liked the ending ,it showed supperiority, after all Joel's Killer was not that different herself from Joel. its a review on the 5th note cause the game is the peak of what a ps4 game could ever hope to achieve. #JusticeForJoel

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. They didn't run out of ideas, that's for sure. However, the ideas they ended up using are very telling of the questionable narrative talents of Halley Gross and the other two "writers" Neil hired as fillers.

The plot holes in both narration and character arcs made this sequel disconnected from what the fans loved and championed about the first. In a way I get what ND was going for because in the real world if this were to happen, it would likely end up the same way: merciless, unfair, and saddening; but the execution needed a little help from Troy, I believe. Maybe it wouldn't have been so jarring to fans had he voiced and mocapped the "sequence" to show more the regret Joel had for trusting a pack of strangers and giving his and Tommy's names outright. There's a part there were they could've zoomed in on him and showed this so as not to leave the fans saying 'what the hell happened to Joel? a hunter would never do this!'

Also, what happened to the black doctor we all shot in the first game?! Yes, the surgeon in the first game was black, which makes Jerry's character so bizarre and last-minute to even include.

Still giving it a rating of 6 because it tried with all the Mortal Kombat fatalities which was nice. And you can't deny those graphics. That next-gen rendering alone already gives this game half the score.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the first game. So much so that my daughter's name is Ellie. The best parts of that game were easily the characters. The story itself is relatively simple, but is made so beautiful with how each event is explored between Joel, Ellie, and everyone else involved. The gameplay was fine. I liked it more than Uncharted because I had grown tired of climbing building after building in videogames. The visuals have become dated, but the cinematic aspects of the game make it a masterpiece in my eyes. The sequel on the other hand... is not.

The Last of Us 2 improved in many ways from it's predecessor. The gameplay is rock solid - building on the foundations of the first whilst not being an over-complicated mess. Visuals are top-notch for the PS4. The setting & cinematics bring you in like no other narrative driven game. But the major issues lie with the story and the characters. Almost a 180 from the original.

I don't agree that characters make decisions that don't line up with what was established in the first game. The stakes have changed and I feel like they handled the situations as we can expect. I think the story has very solid plot points that would've been much better if told in a different order. Meeting Abby and then watching her immediately kill Joel was gut-wrenching. And it could've been great storytelling, if they never tried to make us care for her character - but they spend half the game trying to make you like her. While playing as Abby I found myself purposely dying out of spite for her character. I believe a better approach would've been to start the game off as Abby with her father (not dissimilar to Kingdom Hearts II's opening) so that we can better understand this characters actions. Also, it would've been better for Tommy/Dina dying in the opening with Joel & Ellie out for revenge, and later Joel dying in the theater.

Overall I like the story they wrote, but a little more time in the writer's room would've done this game wonders.

(Sorry for any spelling errors or confusion, im from Denmark)
I have played through the whole game

Abby tortured and executed joel for pleasure, and never felt sorry. How can you side with a character like that?

    How to fix it:

Let joel be a bigger part of the start of the game.

Let joel be held at gun point in to the room.

Dont torture joel, just shot him in the leg and let him have a final word to elle, before he get shot in the head.

In abbys story find a way to make abby show she have
sympathy for elle some how (Elle did kill all her friends, so i dont know how)

Elles last flashback when trying to kill Abby :
Elle: "If you ever got killed i will still go on a killing spree, to kill the people responsible"
Joel: "I dont want you to do that, i dont deserve that, after how i lied to you and killed the fireflies" or something like that.

    Gameplay 7/10
    Graphics 10/10
    Story 7/10
    Writing 3/10
    Final score: 5/10

I’m not saying the last of us 2 is an amazing game. I just don’t think it should get the hate that naughty dog is getting. I’ll be honest, the storyline is awful and Neil Drukkman did a bad job. But the gameplay never seemed to bore me and the graphics are outstanding. Yes killing Joel was the worst thing that happened in the game, but you soon find out why he died, playing as Abby wasn’t the best but if your going to make a new game there has to be BIG changes.

    9+3+4+5=21
    214=5.25

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To be clear for an overall experience I don't think this game is the worst of the worst, I think its an OK game. Without including the drama around the game, the thing that turned me off was the story, and no I don't just mean a specific event that happens 2 hours into the game. The story as a whole for me was just not nearly as good as its predecessor The Last Of Us. For starters, the game felt forced. What I mean by this is it did not have an organic feeling that any good story would have. In many instances it felt as if things happened because they needed to happen rather than naturally occuring and this is where The Last Of Us and The Last Of Us Two really differentiate themselves. The controversial scene around the 2 hour mark did feel as if it was one of the many instances of the game needing a certain trigger to start. The event was in no way shape or form clever and unique which really did spoil the moment all together. I would even argue it was out of character and did not bring justice to a certain character in The Last Of Us. Another instance of an out of place event would be at the end of the game. The ending truly left me puzzled as to what it wanted to accomplish. You look at games like the God Of War trilogy which bases its entire story around revenge and is loved by many fans.
Why did The Last Of Us Two fail? It's because it is not true to its main capturing theme of revenge. Ellie goes through the entire story wanting to avenge a certain character just to not get her revenge at the very end. This left me baffled especially since the writers did such a poor job on winning my sympathy over the person who killed a certain character. People were left unsatisfied with this ending because nobody cared for the murderer. This underwhelming and unsatisfying story left many unhappy because many love The Last Of Us for its story. That's usually what I value the most when buying single-player games, especially ones made by naughty dog. We were all expecting an engaging story filled with character development and mixed emotions on other characters. All we got was a black and white narrative that failed at changing our views on who was good and who was bad. On the contrary, The Last of Us Two did have stellar graphics which I can proudly say they’re some of the best graphics I have ever seen. The environment you play in is so diverse and beautiful I found myself occasionally just stopping and gazing off to the background. The gameplay was much smoother and more polished than its predecessor The Last Of Us Two. With regards to the gameplay aspect, I did enjoy every moment of combat that this game had to offer and enjoyed exploring the The Last Of Us Two environment. It may seem as my review is one-sided, but I just had a lot to say about the story. Other than that I can confidently say The Last Of Us Two did have beautiful graphics and immersive gameplay that people will enjoy.

But no matter what you think of the divisive story choices, divisive or not they are just poorly written story choices that negatively display a story which around those story choices this is well written. The gameplay is fluid, the environment and level design is stunning, game mechanics are well executed. But at the end the last of us 2 fails to write Abby’s character well to justify the game time spent playing as her in a game that isnt bad or inconsistent in writing because plot points were divisive, but in a story that tries to be unpredictable and fails with no adequate writing to explain abby's character or actions with very poor writing to explain a few characters fates. In terms of innovation I feel player choice was robbed in comparison to the 1st game. its more like we are forced into situations with this game in which I think we could had benefited to alternate story choice elements on what in Particular Abby or Ellie does. it would had left it so much more of an impactful first playthrough impression. *** Score:6-7/10 game‬***
why a 7. My average calculates it at a 6.5 based on categories of graphics, how smooth / responsive it runs, overall Story and innovations if applicable. In my score substance needed to stand out more than just beauty. I thoroughly enjoy the 1st last of us game. It is one of the masterpieces that was thought provoking in terms of Joels building relationship with Ellie who is your companion for a majority of the game. the world provided an interesting twist on the common tropes of a pandemic and dystopian settings. the second game is thought provoking but there was a good section of the game I felt like I didn't have as much understanding of character motivations or maybe they were just not written clearly or I could not understand it clearly in particular Abby. The fact the story seemed so linear and not taking into account players being able to to make the choices at certain points in the game us the real disappointment I have in this game. Maybe I set my standards too high but I think that could had helped the game a lot in the story department. limiting player choice to a linear set up doesn't work well considering its predecessor.

This is a honest opinion about the game, using my experiencie given with The last of Us (for me, a solid 9.6) and The last of Us 2 (is a 7.4 but the calification is only with entire numbers) The gameplay feels good, the same in the first game but with some improvements (the dash, dodge, jump, new tools and weapons, etc), the ai is good, can be better (sometimes feels so unnatural with reactions in 1 frame, and others the enemies seem to not see you almost in front of them, could be better), the battles and enemies are good with the last problem exposed.
Now the problem, character development and story, first the Joel's death. Feels so wack, unrealistic (in consideration about the first game): Joel mistrust everyone in the first game, even Ellie, and now he got a window of trust with some random people (even saying his name), and being killed; is so dumb, a stupid decision and a whole hole in the narration. All the plot with the antagonist has a bad execution and low quality doing with morality, could be a lot better, more development could be required (the introduction could be like Assasins creed brotherhood with an assault to Jackson, and knowing better the enemies in the road. This could be more safe than the final product). The final is also dumb, why doing everything you have done to revenge, even leaving your own life behind, to do nothing in front the person who killed your best friend and even a pattern figure (and others like Jesse's death, being a problem with the relation with 2 near of you people Dina and Tommy, basically destroys your life) and get nothing instead? (literally, Ellie is alone in the final) This feels bad, and seems all the story and every action the player done is for nothing. Sorry if something is not clear, english is not my native lenguage.

At first I purchase this game in advance, but after I watch somebody play the first hour of this game, I immediately ask for a full refund. Then I watch the whole gameplay in some players' live streams. Actually, the whole story isn't too bad but the story telling really sucks while Ellie acts like an idiot and Abby acts like a real person. And many characters' death is so cheap such as Joel and Jessie who died casually. About the narrative structure, I think if you put Abby's memories and story before the story of Ellie without telling players that Abby's revenge target is Joel, it will be much better. Anyway, as a player who had played tlou, I don't think tlou2 is an acceptable sequel while it has no respect for tlou and fans who waited 7 years to play this.

I could write a paper on it and I won't, but the effort is so noticable. The story however. Is the reason this game isn't a 9. It starts off so strong. And iota of mystery and good writing fill the air and you can so tell that they are gonna reveal something crazy. But they just let that tension dwindle and die and it becomes just a simple revenge story. Not to say that it isn't neat. But there were 3 story beats that actually made me feel something. Out of a total 10ish big story beats. The ending kept the same era of bittersweet uncertainty about it like the first one and it was great. I loved the ending. I loved the beginning. 60% of the stuff in-between was lackluster. Cool moments as always but I wish they did more. Everything else. Phenomenal. The graphics are stunning. Even on my dinky PS4. Kudos to that..Gameplay is great. All they did was build on what they already had in the first game. Why fix what ain't broke? Close combat is my favorite, feels heavy, and on high difficulties it's unforgiving as all hell. And holy **** is it scary. Made me jump a few times and I'm pretty good when it comes to spoopy games. Final thoughts here. Is it better than the first game? No. Is it worse? No. It's about on par overall. Storywise, the first one shined. Gameplaywise, the second one shined. Naughty dog did a good job with this one. But I wish they hired some better writers. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of us part 2 is a technical marvel in terms of gameplay, It’s a fresh spin on the old gameplay from the first game with new features such as going prone, jumping, suppressors, climbing and scaling walls using ropes, and cables. new enemy types such as the Scars who communicate by whistling, a very creepy and original type of enemy. on the infected side, we have the classic infected types return: Runners, Stalkers, Bloaters, and the extremely none chilling clickers. We also have new infected in the form of shamblers, a deadly new type of infected that explodes spores when it gets too close to the player. There are both new and old weapons, every one of them feel unique and different, and the beloved stealth aspect making a return. The graphics are 10/10, the gameplay is a 10/10 the voice acting and sound design is a 10/10. What hurts this game to it’s very core is the story. It is FAR weaker than the previous title, which received over 200 awards. Although not completely awful, it has a very confusing plot and a very sluggish 3rd act. Characters make choices that seem strange or even to the point of ridiculousness, which leads to unnecessary major character death, and a story with poor pacing, bad writing, weak motives, and an overall laughable ending. That’s not saying the entire game is horrible, the story has some great moments with Joel and Ellie in the form of flashback sequences, which really show how much they’ve grown. However these sections are too few and far between some of the ridiculous moments. Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker once again kill the roles as Joel & Ellie with some of the finest voice work this generation has seen. To summarize, if you loved the gameplay of part one and are okay with your expectations being subverted, you will love this game, If you want to get this game because you fell in love with the story of the first game, I’d save your 60$ and look up a let’s play on YouTube. Nothing special in terms of story. A very disappointing turn out for a company held in such high regards when it comes to story telling. We all know that Neil Druckmann and the Naughty Dog writers are insanely talented, but the story for me completely misses the mark which drops the final rating for me to a 7/10 Expand

Then comes along part 2 my most anticipated game of this decade and instead I'm handed a poor script with characters that are so far away from the majority buyer base that all I can wonder is if this is a joke or a story from a parallel universe. I'm totally fine with Joels death, he has done some bad things and he payed for them. Ellie's vengance mission is 100% understandable but giving the player 10 hours of game play with the character we all despise So much was not a good decision. The game tries to make you bond with Abby by showing her normal life, playing with dogs etc. I don't know why Neil thought it was a good idea. It is very hard to enjoy playing as such an evil character. In my opiniom Abby's story should be a dlc and more time should be spent on Ellies flashbacks and memories with Joel. The end of the game is not satisfying at all. Ellie doesn't get her revenge only because she saw a flashback of Joel siting on a porch. Overall the game is good it's definetly not a game of the year, it's a poor finish to the story of such an amazing characters. It's just not a satisfying ending. Expand

The story was good but boring plus it was way too easy. I played it on survival mode in my first run and it took a little over a day to beat it. In the bright side the graphics were gorgeous, I loved the dodge ability, and the cute Joel and Ellie moments were the best other then that the game is just bad it focused to much in Ellie sexuality, also the ai companion sucked, horrible ending, they also added themes that weren't necessarily just to please a demographic group that is most likely never going to play this game and the only emotional scenes were the death o Joel and Jess. At the end I'm just hoping they add multiplayer otherwise I wasted my money. Expand

this is nothing like the first game. this has a completely different atmosphere with revenge and hatred driving every character's decisions, unlike the original whereas love and companionship formed ellie and joel's relationship. the story of ellie's hatred showed the realistic side of relationships, not just the "happy ending" part that we're always so used to, which is why i believe that those who did not enjoy the game were expecting to have everything work out the way they hoped. because of this, i can see why a lot of people didn't like part II. there were definitely times where i rushed the gameplay just to get a level over with. however, we were told that this game wasn't going to be for everyone and good lord Neil Druckmann was not lying. at some parts, it made me feel like an absolute monster and a piece of **** not just because we were being forced to kill dogs, but because i genuinely HATED what i was doing at one point to my opponent. there were a **** ton of twists that kept happening, especially towards the end. so many things were so heart wrenching, and others were heart warming at the same time, but i do admit that some parts were pretty badly executed and some characters absolutely sucked which kinda took away from the story. the whole idea of the game was to emphasize how everything won't have a "good happy ending," which made players think about the realistic side of life, especially when dealing with someone extremely close to you in a post-apocalyptic world. overall, tlou p2 was a rollercoaster of emotions and made me sob multiple times, but also gave me mixed feelings. unfortunately, it didn't come close the amount of appreciation and love i have for the first game because that was the true masterpiece itself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off, the negative reviews of this game I just don’t get. Sure, fans are entitled to their own opinion(s) and I respect that but with that being said so am I.

This is an absolutely amazing game from start to finish probably top 5 ever made an absolute masterpiece for sure, hands down!!!. I found myself, after putting the controller down for a bit asking myself, is this a game, feels like I am in a Hollywood blockbuster just as I did with the first game. Sure I do agree with some of the fan’s take on insertion and the vagueness of the story without adding to overall character development however that’s not what the mission of this game was. I believe ND wanted to convey a blanket story of the overall visceral nature of revenge. Quite honestly when I heard some of the reviews that stated that the violence in this game was “traumatizing” or how some stated things such as “why am I playing this game” or “it made me feel so bad for humanity” I thought to myself “wow, what kind of things did ND put into this game” to make people say such things, then I played it. There was nothing in this game that made me feel no more apathetic or uninvested than watching an episode of the walking dead. If anything it could have used more brutality given what happens to the two main protagonists (there is a third one) however I believe ND let up on it a bit to make you feel more in tune with the struggles of its main characters decisions throughout the whole of the game.

Once I reached the halfway point of this game ND was playing with my emotions hardcore! I went from wanting nothing more than for Ellie to bring nothing short of the worst sort of reckoning upon a group of people to sympathizing with the main “antagonist” and then eventually my emotions culminating with being torn on who I wanted to see succeed. That my friends is great story telling and writing for that matter. One thing I will say though is shame on ND for toying with us in the trailers and commercial spots. I wanted so much for that to be this mind blowing twist of events when you get to the point in the game when a hand covers up your mouth (moment from the trailer) and in fact it’s Jesse and not Joel like the trailer showed but who are we kidding, Movies do this all of the time...lol!

After all that being said if there was Oscar’s for games, this one took every award home. Definitley GOTY!!!! Bravo NG! Please just don’t let it be this long of a wait for the third installment!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I never usually write reviews for games, but I felt in this case it was necessary. Before playing the game, I avoided all trailers, spoilers and leaks. I waited years for this game, and words cannot describe how disappointed I am.
Firstly, there are several elements to the game which are incredible. Naughty Dog have put blood, sweat and tears into this game and it shows in many areas. The visual scenes in this game are breath taking. The attention to detail for the environments is credit worthy. I would say the visuals are the best I have seen from any game. The customisation with difficulty settings, as well as accessibility is ground breaking in my opinion. That is however, where the good points end.
The gameplay is quite similar to the first game. However, the addition of going prone and jumping is a welcome one. However, I was disappointed with the lack of puzzle solving in this game. In the first game, you would use the wooden planks, ladders etc to make it from point to point. This allowed a break from the violent killing of humans and infected. This game severely lacked this and as a result the gameplay turned into run, kill and move to the next area. With a game time of around 30 hours this became very monotonous towards the end. This is a shame considering the rope mechanics introduced in the game were incredible but sadly under used.
The major disappointment and unforgiving in my eyes is the story. The premise of the story is revenge over the death of Joel. The plot holes start here. Joel was of cautious of everyone. In the first game, this was apparent when he knew the "injured" man on the road, while they were driving, was faking it. However, in this game he conveniently trusts a stranger and follows her to her base which is filled with more strangers. He seems to trust them, Tommy even invites them back to Jacksonville! In my opinion this was lazy writing. They needed to find a way to get Joel into that position, however this was poorly executed.
The biggest problem is playing half the game as Abby. Once she has killed Joel in such a fashion she is irredeemable. As you play her, she is made to be more human. However, I already saw that her killing of Joel was justified. He killed her father. An eye for an eye. But forcing us to play as her in an attempt for us to like her was terrible. We played as Joel for an entire game, so I don't understand how doing a long winded side mission with Abby would somehow turn us to her side. If the game introduced us to Abby and showed her perspective after the hospital, and then led up to Joel, rather than flashbacks this may have been more effective.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of the last of us was the relationship between Ellie and Joel. There was no character building of any of the main characters like Dina and Jesse. Jesse is killed and I didn't feel much since I didn't know much about him. If Dina was removed and Ellie went solo, there wouldn't be much of a difference. This shows how little Dina mattered in the grand scheme of things. More development between the two should have occurred.
The icing on the cake is the ending, which is shocking. Ellie finds her way back to Abby after everything, to take her revenge. She slaughters an entire settlement to get there. A fight ensues and Abby bites off two of Ellie's fingers. Yet after all of this, Ellie feels that Abby should be spared? In the end we see that Ellie can no longer play the guitar since she is missing fingers, she has lost her family and friends and has nothing to show for it. The game tries to display the message that endless violence is never the answer. However, they fail to account for all the potential people who could come after Ellie after Seattle or after Santa Barbara. Moreover, they allow Abby to get her revenge but Ellie is denied.
There are too many flaws in the plot to note. The aspect of the story I did enjoy was the flashbacks with Ellie. These were very well written and reminded me of the first game. I would have rather preferred an entire game of such flashbacks than what we got.
I have noticed several people find the politician tones of the game appalling. Personally the addition of gay/trans did not affect me at all. It did not add or retract anything from the game. I would not rate down a game for that imo.
Overall the game is a let down. I would still say it is worth a play purely from the visual aspects. However, do not have high expectations.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The ending is just sad and unsatisfying. Ellie loses so much and doesn't even get what she did everything for. She lost Joel,Jesse,Dina,Tommy hates her for not going after Abby and she lost the ability to play guitar, which reminded her of Joel. What happens to Abby? She gets her revenge at the cost of her friends. If she was shown to also reflect on how it wasn't worth it I wouldn't want her dead and would be at peace with the ending. Another problem with the game are definetly the order of the flashbacks. If the game was in chronological order it would have been so much better. Joel's death would have had more impact as we get to play through all the flashbacks instead of it just being for shock value. The most enjoyable parts of this game were the flashbacks that remind you of the first game. I don't know what happend to this game and why it turned out like this when their previous games were so good. The graphics on the other hand look fabulous and the atmosphere is very cool, although compared to the PS3 The last of us not that impressive cause Naughty Dog's games look good in general. As a standalone game this is a 7, as the sequel to a game I loved so much its a 5 at most as it disrespects Joel in the worst way possible, characters behave strange and the writing is just.... wack. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So now that I've finished the game, I'd like to give my impressions. I wouldn't even call the whole thing bad writing. The story was okay. But there were some questionable decisions. For me personally, it would have been smarter to get to know Abby before her group found Tommy and Joel. I'd prefer a character, who struggles with her wish for revenge and duties towards her community. It would've been nice to have the flashbacks like: Ellie: past to presence, Abby: presence to past, instead of playing a character I don't know and didn't understand when she showed empathy for others. I wasn't as emotionally involved as I was in Part I. I saw a single longer encounter of Abby and her father. I still don't know him, don't really care about his death, therefore Abby's personal demise. I would've loved to see how bad live turned out after and why her hatred eats her up. Part I portrayed reasons for Joel to be the way he was, which I'm missing within the character of Abby.
Joel had the purpose of surviving, but more was stacked upon his shoulders: find a cure, lose Tess, keep Ellie safe, rebuild relationship to Tommy, keep Ellie at distance, give in and let the love grow. Abby's purpose is: make war, find Joel. Not enough to get emotionally involved. She doesn't struggle with anything but comments from Mel and Owen, which she ignores and moves on. Other characters like Tommy, Ellie, Joel and even Bill make up their minds about things - good, decent and enjoyable characters. Maybe I'm just not much of a revenge-at-all-costs-person. I don't understand the drive.
When Abby tries to save Lev and his sister, she shows some character traits I can work with - a little late. I enjoyed and was involved in the war-situation on the island, but that was because of the screams, the fire, having Lev in the middle of this. I felt for Abby when she told him "You're my people", but she destroyed the moment when she wanted to cut Dina's throat. Joel's character in Part I left the thoughts "C'mon, Joel. Try to get over yourself." and later "FINALLY! Go save your girl!". Abby leaves the thought "The hell are you doing? Why'd you do that?", later "I don't care. Let's just get it over with." I rushed through her episodes to return to Ellie. I needed encounters like the one with Lev or even with Abby and her group before so Joel's death wouldn't make me feel devastated because I had to play a character I'm thinking "what am I doing here?" of, but rather had a decent character, who cares about more than revenge, making seeing her kill Joel harder. Her friends for example. Who I don't feel like they are as Abby doesn't give a **** about them until they're gone for good. I've watched Manny spit on a dead man's face, sending an insult his way and I'm supposed to feel a friendship between Abby and him later? Come on :'D and while everyone else is shaken by the events, Abby found her smile. I'm supposed to feel for her when there's not even a little remorse or self-reflection? That's a main character quality she's missing, if we leave the Scars-situation later on aside. Another involvement aspect: I would have loved for Jackson to get into the middle of the Seraphites' and Wolves' conflict. It would have made Ellie's decision not to kill Abby even stronger. Ellie would've made her decision for the greater good: Abby can only keep her people safe and alive when she's not dead. Yes, this story is about personal processes. Still, I would have loved Ellie to decide for the greater good.
On the other hand, their fight at the end broke my heart. I was glad Ellie decided not to kill her. The ending was unsettling. It wasn't an open ending like Part I, but isn't closed, either. I would have liked Ellie to finally play and sing the whole song Joel wrote, instead of playing the first few chords and leave. That would have made me feel sad instead of just empty. I love the world, the details, the old characters, would like to say I loved the new ones, like Jesse (again I didn't get enough time), I loved the gameplay (and at the same time hated it, but that's because of my gaming skill :D). I just wished so badly there was a way to feel for Abby in order to make playing her entertaining. I wish the order of events was different and with a little more small encounters to get to know Abby. I even would've preferred to play a character from Abby's group, who watches her get consumed by her hatred. I would've liked to play a character, being on her side regarding the whole Joel-thing, but making no comment on Abby's actions so that I, as a player, get the chance to carry my opinion rather than being pushed into an opinion I disagree with by all means. Great game, great level designs, great details, great acting, confusing decision regarding the choice for a new main character, that doesn't bring along main character qualities, confusing decision towards the order of events, leading to little involvement on Abby's behalf.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Vamos gente, qué acaso no prestaron atención a nada?

When this happened all I felt was hate for the Abby the person who killed Joel but then they make me play with her for more than 6 hours a girl that I don’t give a penny about they try to make me sympathetic towards her but failed to do so I hated her since the beginning. The way the killed Joel is nothing what Joel will do. Joel will not trust random people he met he will be suspicious and will not say his **** name I mean come on naughty dog the first game clearly showed he had trust issues but no killed him and ruin the whole game. To make matters worse you can’t even killed Abby in the end game Ellie let’s her go just leaving you there. You killed everyone but the one person you hated the most bruhh what a disappointment a waste of 60 dollars on my opinion just stick with the first game Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After finishing the game over the weekend, I can honestly say that I enjoyed the game quite a lot. There have been a lot of reviews bombing the game, but I would like to share why I think this game is a good one at least, if not a totally worthy sequel. I just want to warn that there will be a lot of spoilers.

First: the gameplay. I liked it, it was familiar, easy to settle into. It got tedious after about say 16 hours but with the introduction of Stalkers a bit before then you are kept on high alert. I especially liked the additional boss fight with the monstrosity you encounter later in Seattle.
The crafting was the same, but you have to level up Ellie and Abby's skills in a follow-up order, which was a bit annoying, since I couldn't immediately get the skill I wanted or would find useful at that moment in the game. I also loved that you could customize most settings, like companion effectiveness, enemy alertness level and even button functions on the controller.

The character perspective switch. Through the game you play as Ellie in the first half, and go through the same timeline again, but this time as Abby. I wasn't the biggest fan of the switching, since we we're playing as Joel's killer and eventually turing us against Ellie, but I understand why it was important for us to see Abby's side of the story, get to know her, find her motivations, see that she's actually a person that lost so much and just couldn't let go. It kept her from being just another villain set on uprooting what we had established. It also brought regret on finding out you were responsible for killing her dad and eventually her friends, they get you to bond with those characters, but didn't shy from the fact that, yeah, they're already dead because of you.
I wasn't the biggest fan, but I even started to like Abby near the end of Day 2.

The pacing. A little drawn out, took too long to get to the point, but ultimately a good time. The flashbacks to Ellie's time with Joel were the best parts of the game. Abby's flashbacks too, great parts in understanding her character. 10/10.

The "agenda". Ellie's gay and her girlfriend accompanies her through the first half of the game. Beginning features homophobic comment. There is a trans boy later on that Abby helps out when the crazy cult wants to kill him. The story would be exactly the same if Dina was a guy (except maybe for the pregnant part but that can be changed) and Lev was a girl that broke the rules of the cult, it has 0 influence on your life or the story. I really enjoyd these aspects. It was nice to have more diverse set of characters, you don't notice how bland stories are without diversity until you get a story with a lot of it. 10/10.

Now: the story. I can honestly say that this is the main reson why it didn't get 10/10 from me. As a standalone game, it is beautiful in every way, but as a sequel to a dearly beloved first game, it klings too much on shock value. I liked that the first game felt organic and had more highs than lows. If I could associate it with a colour, The Last Of Us would be deep forest green. Part II would be the colour of rust. It got old and started to collapse under its own weight. The game would've benefited from it so much if they decided to end it in the theatre in Seattle. To kill Abby aswell. I understood Joel's death, Ellie losing her fingers and the abundance of other deaths and tragedies throughout, but letting Abby go made the whole game's story moot point.
The whole part in Santa Barbara was useless to me and felt like they were milking that damm revenge cow till it ran dry.

Throughout the game we see many similarities between Abby and Ellie, they're pretty much two sides of the same coin. Ellie is no better than Abby and the game should've gave Ellie the horrid realisation of this. Instead they have tried to make Ellie the better person, which she is not and never will be.

I actually liked Abby's story more than Ellie's, Ellie felt flat and narrow minded. The part where she showed up at the theatre after killing Mel and Owen, that was the first time I felt like Ellie was an actual person in the story, not just an object that progressed the game. I would actually contribute 3 out of the 7 score I gave to Abby's storyline.

I also noticed people said Joel and Tommy were reckless and out of character about telling the group where they lived and trusting them (eventually leading to Joel's death), but lets face it, it's been four years in Jackson, they got soft and trusting and slipped, especially since the group didn't show signs of being a threat in the beginning. Joel was also overpowered, approaching or over 50 and vulnerable.

In conclusion: I had a great time. Not the best game of the year, but the best one I've played this year so far. You can see that Naughty Dog put a lot of heart and effort into this game, sometimes it just missed the mark a bit, but still on the board at least.

Naughty Dog managed to take a game with a deep and engaging plot and turn it into an uninspired revenge plot that captures none of the charm and nuance of the original.

The actual game play is fine and the graphics are undeniably gorgeous. I won't knock the craftsmanship, only that the writer missed the mark entirely this time around.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is an amazing improvement in the gameplay since the first game. Lots of new features and ways to approach enemies. What I liked the most is the fact that many things felt intuitive for me as a player. My first approach to do something, like breaking a window into an empty building or using the cables to move around, was respected even though it wasn't the intended approach. Also, the graphics are stunning and they help a lot with the experience. The amount of animations for every single character and interaction with an object are incredible and diverse.

On the other hand I have mixed feelings about the story. Abby's story and carachter development is superb. We see her grow as a person and deal with her past in a very good way. I liked that the main characters died as they would die in the real world. Not dying as heroes fighting against ordes of zombies and enemies, but with a simple mistake that lead them to get shooted. Ellie's story was good, but I would liked more exploration in her relationship with Dina and the times she spent with Joel after the first game (Possible DLC), as well as more guitar moments. On Ellie's side I didn't like that her character limited to a vengeance story, which doesn't ressemble Joel's teachings to her or so. Also something had to happen with the fact that she's inmune, that was the whole plot of the first game.

Hope the next entry fixes this mistakes, but overall it was an excelent game.

Miraculously, I managed to avoid the leaks and any information outside of the official trailers. So any impression was purely based on my experience with the game.

I waited 7 years for this game, and I'm left disappointed and heartbroken. I really wanted to like it. I thought people that were upset were simply immature. I was wrong. This is a game that tries too hard to be smart. It is not profound. It is not deep. It does not require you to think deeply about the themes, it bashes you over the head with it. The Last of Us Part II is a very good example of what happens when themes overtakes storytelling instead of elevating it.

I'm giving this a 6/10. 5 of that is for it being a technical marvel. 1 for having a promising start.

The gameplay is solid. It's nothing new, so if you loved the gameplay from the first one, you will love it in this one. However, it became repetitive when you start to get 3/4 of the way. Notable zombie boss fights that was frantic and enjoyable.

Graphics looks great. Seattle provides an incredible backdrop to the bleak story and the atmosphere puts you in a tense emotion by providing great lighting. Subtle character expression is visible and provides an additional depth to the incredible acting by the actors.

Unfortunately, the story is where it all falls apart. It had a promising start, but began to waste your time halfway through. It's a 10-hour journey stretched out to 25. The premise is that Ellie began her journey of revenge after a traumatic tragedy. However, it has been intentionally left out that the person responsible for that traumatic tragedy is a playable main character and you will spend at least 10 hours as that person. To anyone intending to buy this to have more Joel and Ellie adventure, don't. You have been misled by the trailers and interviews. This is not a Joel and Ellie adventure, it is barely an Ellie adventure.

Instead, it is a showcase of what the cycle of revenge and violence will cost a person. Stripped down to its core theme, The Last of Us Part II sends the message that "revenge is bad". Yet it does not respect the players enough to let them discern it themselves by writing and telling a compelling and emotional story. The message is instead shoved down the players' throat for 25 hours to ensure that the message is there, at the expensive of proper storytelling. The structure is a mess. The first half built up to a tense moment, leaving it at a cliffhanger to bring the tension back down as they rewound time. Horrid decision and completely destroyed any tension that existed.

Characters continually make decisions that is out of character. It was very difficult to relate or agree with the decisions my main characters were making. This deviance from established characterisation were mostly unexplained. Coincidences and cheap plot devices were used to move the story forward. Further, the story continuously hid information from the player with the intention of 'surprising' them with it later on. Compared to the strong cast of characters from the first game, the characters in the second one is very weak and forgettable.

The first game had a relatively generic story. It was Joel and Ellie's relationship as well as the incredible supporting cast of characters that elevated the story. My difficulty to relate and connect with any of the characters is a large reason as to why the game fell flat. I do not understand why the reviews have been calling this a perfect game. It is far from that. Does it deserve a 0 or a 1? Not necessarily. But there are certainly better games out there that does not waste your time for 25 hours.

I rate the game separately from part 1 because I never played part 1. I just watched a summary of the story from part 1, so I understand what happens in part 2. So I can rate the pure game without having to compare it with part 1. I played through the title on "normal" in about 21h!

Let's anticipate the positive: The graphics, sound and the ambience of the environments are really on an excellent level. Most of the work and is definitely in the 3D models and mapping. The different areas in which you move around are quite varied and beautiful in themselves. Especially the woods are beautiful and invite you to stay. The first 2 hours of the game are very captivating and you definitely want to know what happens next.

Unfortunately, these were all positive things that come to my mind at first go.

Up to the point where it happens you realize how deep and touching the story could be. Exactly at that point the story stops for 16 hours. There are always flashbacks, some of which are totally irrelevant and could not really contribute to the story. What was even more annoying was the Xth review of the review. In general I find it absolutely annoying even in movies when you try to explain something by looking into the past for the 5th time. I find a constructive story much more understandable than one that looks back and forth. Many flashbacks could have been finished in 5 minutes. Many of these retrospectives were only artificially extended in an outrageous way. I often forgot what happened 6 hours ago, because I've been loitering and killing stupid enemies for hours. Of course there were always short story moments in between. But if we are honest, they were extremely rare and quickly forgotten. The last 2h were really exciting and very well staged. If I break that down I had about 4h of good moments and 17h of running from house to house and killing stupid enemies. The idea of the story is unfortunately nothing special! Person 1 kill person 2 who totally liked person 3 and person 2 wants revenge on person 1. I mean we often saw and played exactly that way. there were not really any twists or surprises during the whole story that would have been good for the story. The end was already relatively clear after 2h and came 0 surprisingly. In the end, it would have been better to add more twists and push the whole story to 6h or 8h and not extend the whole crap to over 20h. I would have preferred to have 8h of action and story all the way through rather than having to wait all the time. The part with Abby was, I think, also much too long.

If you want to talk about the opponents and the AI, you have to say clearly that I was not challenged much. The AI of the people running with us is on the level of a toast. The AI runs into the middle of the battlefield and stands in the middle of it until you attack. Even worse are the enemies that were right in front of you and the AI that runs with me and does exactly nothing. Whether they're human or zombie. Although the AI has often flanked in battle, but that was often easy to avoid by just lying down in the grass. Often I had the problem of missing ammunition. Especially before the few boss fights there was much too little ammunition. The rat king just annoyed me, because I went into combat with barely 20 shots in total. Sure, it could be that I stopped trying to find every boring house at some point but you never know when a boss is coming. The only thing I found cool was that you could always play stealth or aggressive.

You can't complain much about playing. The behaviour of the character while running, running, climbing etc. was really well implemented. The technique with the rope was really very good. But that was the only technique you seemed to rest on. At some point the rope throwing became really boring. The weapons in general are varied and it always makes sense to use different weapons on different opponents. The skill tree was interesting but not really decisive in the fight.

So what can you say as a conclusion? The game is good but unfortunately story-wise much too boring and playfully much too monotonous. After a certain time you only run from house to house or floor to floor and kill and plumb. In between there were always some short story moments. The idea of being able to play the antagonists half of the game is good, but it was just annoying here and was much too long. If I use the 100% rating scale, I would give the game 69%. The game only shines graphically but otherwise only very rarely in the story.

I wouldn't wish for part 3 in this case!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel some of the utterly scathing reviews for Last of Us Part 2 are disingenuous - but not unjustifiable. The game simply does not live up to its predecessor in terms of story. Returning characters are badly written and the majority of new characters are instantly forgettable. The ending offers no real narrative or emotional payoff making you ask yourself “What was the point?” This lack of closure makes the violence feel perverse – falling into the clichéd “violence for violence’s sake” trope.
Where this game does shine is of course in its visual presentation. The game is stunning to look at and can be forgiven for acting like it knows it a times. The mechanics are immersive (while perhaps repetitive) and the AI is for the most part excellent. Inclusion of new in depth accessibility options feels like a real game changer which may prove to be a staple for future AAA titles.
As a massive fan of the series' first iteration this is an imperfect game with painfully apparent flaws, which undeniably falls short of the mark. The game somehow teeters continuously on the edge of breath-takingly good and gut wrenchingly bad which feels like a feat in and of itself.

The Last Of Us Part ll is not the perfect game both in gameplay and story telling, but has compelling themes that deconstructs the players views of characters from the previous games. This game is not for everyone and when the credits rolled I found myself not really wanting more since the stories of these characters have been told and coming out of the events of this game they all lost more than they gained. The Story in this game feels everywhere, Neil Druckman took a lot of cues from Tarantino and his way of story telling most notably in vain of Pulp Fiction with a revenge tale similar to Kill Bill. With that being said this type of storytelling doesn’t translate well into a 25 Hour Story. This game focuses on both sides, no one is the good guy and no one is the bad guy. The Last Of Us Part ll suffers greatly from this when a majority of the game you spend walking around with dialogue and discussions that aren’t interesting. This is more apparent within the last half of the game and is by far the weakest part too. The Combat this game has to offer initially feels like a rush after you blow off your first limps hearing blood curdling screams from enemy factions. This brutality alone compliments and reflects the themes this game strives to, but eventually this novelty gets worn out after awhile and you eventually see the flaws the game has to offer such as the dumb A.I that actively hunt you down during the numerous combat arenas. To simply put it, this game at first is fun, but due to the length of this game and how boring the game gets this game simply playing it feels like a chore in which you constantly wish for the credits to just roll. As for characters and relationships alongside the numerous deaths in this game comparing it to the first title a lot of these deaths lack any form of weight to them and all it simply spells out is “No One Is Safe and No Happy Endings Exist”. Ellie’s and Dina’s relationship what starts off as a close one ends up becoming romantic with moments where you see clear Jealousy by Ellie, this relationship does progress, but as it does and as you reach late into the game you see Dina has developed the same control that Joel once had over Ellie during a scene that propels you into the final three chapters. Overall The Last Of Us Part ll isn’t for everybody, I found the ending conflict between Ellie and Abby to be empty and lacks any satisfaction, their actions costed so much and for Ellie it ultimately left her with nothing and almost empty with this clearly displayed before the final cutscene. If I was to rate this game I’d simply rate it a 6/10 It’s a ok game, it’s clear that plenty of love went into it, but unfortunately it misses the mark on a lot of levels especially since I completed the original before beginning this game. Characters and Writing alongside the accompanied gameplay don’t serve the game well since all together it over stays it’s welcome compared to the original. Expand

One of the best looking games to come out of this generation, the art and design team prove again that they can push the technology to its limit to show something that is graphically and technologically impressive. The world that is made within the series is one of the best examples of a post-apocalyptic world we have.

The game-play is a decade old rendition of the first games, with no new innovations to push the medium. Which feels like it’s made up of entirely of different rooms of repeating stealth or combat scenarios, while the very few environmental “puzzles” simply require you to move a dumpster or climb through a window.

In a conclusion; I myself, would have rather continued to believe that the story had ended at the final events of the previous game, than have gone through the devastating, un-enjoyable events of the sequel that added almost nothing of substance to the plot.

I'm sorry, ND, but I simply cannot care about all the individuals you showed me throughout the game, I can't even do that in real life to be honest. Ellie and Joel grew on me after spending a whole game seeing them face hardships and build their relationship. But in the sequel, you expected me to understand a new character whose only redeeming quality is the death of her father. Nothing else. Because Abby as a character is not worth of anyone's care. She didn't do anything remotely empathetic to earn my respect: she **** her friend's boyfriend, she never showed regret after killing Joel in that grotesque way even when he saved her or while hearing the cries of Ellie, she enjoyed torturing a pregnant woman, you made me play as her and fight against an actual beloved character and so on.
But hey, you thought that after showing me that people seem to like her in her own stupid faction, will I also like her? That's not how things work and you should know better.

And the rest is not much better, at many times I felt like I was watching an episode of a bad TV show. Did you this time take inspiration from a cliche Netflix show by any chance instead of a book?

And I haven't mentioned anything about the barely improved mechanics and disappointing AI. The 5 mark goes for those in charge of directing the scenes, the art and the 3D models because they did an incredible job, anything else is subpar and it doesn't matter if the game cost 1 or 200 million, a bad game is still a bad game.

Is The Last Of Us Part 2 better than the first game? In my opinion, No. But is that a bad thing? Again in my opinion, most certainly not.

When you play this game, you know it's a Naughty Dog game. It is a technical achievement to behold and everyone involved in making this game should be praised and applauded. Everything, the visuals, sound design, level design, performances, art direction, i can go on all of it is of the highest quality and I've come to expect this from Naughty Dog but they really blew me away with this one.

The thing that brings this whole game down for me though is the story. I think a sequel to the first game was absolutely justified due the circumstances in which the first game leaves off in however this is not the story i expected and it's not the story i wanted. This story lacks what made the first game so special, it lacks the touching intimate relationship between Ellie and Joel. There is a load of new characters introduced in this game and i found myself not caring for anyone other than Ellie, Joel and Tommy. These characters are introduced so early and so fast it was hard for me to care. Particularly Ellie's love interest Dina, she is superbly played Shannon Woodard and she has a great personality but her relationship with Ellie felt very forced and rushed compared to Ellie's relationship with Riley in the Left Behind DLC. Later in the game, some of the characters get that time to shine and you learn about their motivations but it's a fair bit into the game and for me it was too little too late. I commend Naughty Dog for going out there with this story, people are gonna love it and people are gonna hate it but it failed to work for me.

One last thing i have to mention. Me as gamer i gauge my game purchases based on trailers and what is shown, particularly when it comes to story trailers. I want to let people know with The Last Of Us Part 2's story trailers, it is not at all representative of the ENTIRE story you'll be playing. It does represent some parts of the game but not ALL. I understand why Naughty Dog did this however there are scenes in the trailers that do exist in the game but have different characters in the scenes than shown in the trailer. This is misleading and it is wrong, I really hope they know they screwed up on that front regardless on if it was done to keep parts of the game secret. You cannot mislead your playerbase like that or you will lose their trust.

Aside from the story and the trailer representation, this is a well put together game. The performances from the great actors, the stunning visuals and the gameplay really carried me through to the end of the game. It will be interesting to see if there'll be a sequel or not but nevertheless congrats to Naughty Dog for launching and i look forward to seeing what Naughty Dog does next.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just finished the game and i gotta say im really disapointed in the way Naughty Dog executed the narrative for this game, it felt lackluster, uniteresing, boring, and just streight up dissapointing, lets start with the first 2 hours of the game when they kill off Joel in a pathetic way by someone who wanted to avenge her fathers death, ok great, after that scene the game just became a drag for me i didnt see the point in continuing but like all the critics where saying just give a shot wait, continue to play until the end, ok i gave it the shot and still left unimpressed, the first half of the game playing as Ellie was fine the wasnt a problem but it was just redundant and boring narritavely you eventually find out Dina is pregnant and so on and so forth, then comes the 2nd half of the game and in my opinion this should been DLC or something on its own its just wasnt timed right in my opinon, having to play the 2nd half of the game as Abby was just a drag and uninteresting i didnt find my self caring for any of those characters that where introduced except Lev and his sister yara that when it sort of got interesting, but besides that the deaths of these new characters did nothing for me i didnt feel for them because i hardly knew anything about them, what was there to be connected to? and don't even get me started with the final section of the game, overall it was just a drag I understand what naughty dog was trying to go for but it was executed poorly narratively and should be done a different way in my opinion if you're a fan of the first game you will be disappointed with this story narratively. Frankly, I am really disappointed with the story even though the gameplay was extremely fun and the graphics and the world were gorgeous. The story offers nothing interesting or new to the table that hasn't already been made and what the story did was already done better in other games (e.g. RDR2). 25 hours of gameplay for absolutely nothing.

I will install the game again when they release the multiplayer because as I said the gameplay is really fun (it's kind of similar to uncharted 4 but I really don't mind). I hope Naughty Dog's next game is better

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is pretty fun to play. The gameplay is solid and I enjoy the loop: cutscenes, explore, fight, with a few set pieces thrown in there. Graphically this is one of the most impressive games on on PS4, the same goes for sound. The writing and story were the mainstay of part I. In Part II we have these beautiful round characters that were crafted over the course of part I and, largely, we don't do anything with them. Joel, absolutely the best written and most morally complex character is disposed of early. The rest of the game we spend as Ellie hunting Abby and offing a series of her compatriots. When we switch to Abby we're asked to understand and sympathize with this new character and understand why her killing Joel is justified. Her actions are justified but I could not find any empathy or sympathy to afford this character. All in all the characters are all flat. None of them experience any real change. Dina basically stays the same same the entire game. Jessie is interesting and is then unceremoniously shot I'm the face. By the end Ellie's choice to let Abby live is completely illogical. After killing Joel, Jessie, Tommy, and one slice from killing Dina Ellie just lets her go. Revenge is best served cold, and preferably with some nice round characters and some significant character development. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No, just no. Everything is great except the story, which makes the game, and that's why it's not good despite the rest of the game. How did everyone at Naughty Dog agree to this story? Joel gets killed in a horrific, almost traumatising way that is not right. If he had to die at least make it honourable, so that it was somewhat acceptable, but not like this. They literally destroy Joel. And then they try to make us feel bad for Abby and understand why she did it and make Ellie and Joel the bad guys?! There are simply no good or bad guys in the apocalypse.

We play with Abby for more then half of the game which makes us see how the relationship is between her and her friends, which doesn't even matter to the story. And then we are forced to fight Ellie? In every aspect of the game you see how Abby is a big psycho, and then she almost kills (a pregnant) Dina, which she was gonna enjoy. While you could see that when Ellie killed Abby's friends she started to breath heavily cause you know, she's a human and was shocked what she did. And then when we finally can take revenge and kill Abby, ELLIE STOPS??? Because of a memory of Joel??? It should have done the opposite and make her want to kill Abby even more! And so in the end everything was for nothing and Ellie loses Joel, Dina, and is left alone? How can you ruin this game so much Naughty Dog? Neil Druckmann, why? How could you guys do this to every fan of the last of us?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL;DR: Frustrating, but a must-play

Giving this game a 0/10 is truly idiotic. Giving it 10/10 is pure fanboyism. This game isn't mediocre, but it's not a masterpiece either. Being a narrative focused game, this is about how it makes you feel. I cannot speak for others, but I have felt an intense rollercoaster of emotions playing this game, for better or worse. FYI, I have finished this game on the 20th. Here's my bullet points:

    Pros:
    -Storytelling
    -Better gameplay
    -Stressful ambience
    -Masterful music
    -Ellie

    Cons:
    -Storytelling
    -Pacing
    -Redundant flashbacks
    -Revenge bad
    -Abby

I'm putting storytelling in both the pros and cons because this game will make you feel devastated, depressed, frustrated, anxious and conflicted. I finished this game within 2 days because I couldn't put my controller down. For the first few hours, it's so nice to be back with both Ellie and Joel, then... he gets brutally murdered after literally saving his killer's life. That might be out-of-character for him, but he's been living in a community of hundreds, Jackson, for 4 years now. I was pissed, I was devastated, but Joel needed to die for the story to advance. It's easy to say that what he did was justified, but he is directly responsible for the state of the whole world. Even if the cure was a 50/50 chance of success, the logical thing is to save the rest of the world. Don't get me wrong, if I had to do it all over again, I would save Ellie everytime, but you cannot say that he didn't deserve to die. The music and the ambience in this game is truly anxiety-inducing, I was at the edge of my seat for 90% of my playthrough. I replayed the original on the 18th and the gameplay is improved, albeit very similar. Guns handle better and the bow is now fun to play with. It's not revolutionary by any means, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Pacing is the worst aspect of this game. It makes you feel conflicted about what it's trying to tell you and fails at making you care about Abby. All you get is this melodramatic run through a snowy forest with some dude and a girl that are looking for Joel, before this girl ends up beating him to death with a golf club. With hindsight, it just feels like shock value -- the bane of Game of Thrones -- and sullies the rest of Abby's story-line.

I think the game is easily fixed if you just move segments around... It should start the same, Joel and Tommy's conversation is a great way to recap the original and get you back in the world straight away. Visiting Jackson is okay, I guess, it shows the new status quo for our characters. You should still meet Abby in the cabin, having these unknowns looking for Joel is ominous. After they see Jackson, the game should go to Abby's panicked run through the hospital, finding her dad sprawled dead on the floor. This way it shows you, it makes you feel why she wants to find and kill Joel. That being said, I think the beating was just a little too much, for my taste. For the rest of the story, I think Ellie and Abby's journey through Seattle shouldn't be split in two, but made back and forth, from one to the other. It might be as redundant, but I hated playing only Abby for so long. A lot of people say that the new characters are bland, but just look at Tess and Tommy. We have very little background to them and they still are players' favourites.

Throughout the game, you keep seeing these similarities between Ellie and Abby. They are driven by vengeance, they go out into an insanely dangerous world for someone else (Joel and Tommy for Ellie, Owen and Lev/Yara for Abby). I think that's a great element of the story, how similar they can be at times, in their goals and their methods. Which would be accentuated by the back and forth between the two, as I proposed earlier. To be honest, I think this game would be a solid 8-9, if the pacing were better. As for the ending... I would keep it the same. Exactly the same, except for one detail: Ellie kills Abby. Revenge is bad, right? We all heard that story before, but killing Abby doesn't say that revenge is good. I mean, Ellie says that she cannot sleep or eat and she has vivid hallucinations from a simple bucket tumbling over. She is still consumed by that need for retribution, after months. She abandons Dina and JJ to get said revenge, she travels for probably weeks on end to find Abby. Drowning her would most likely condemn Lev because I don't see any reasons for Ellie to help him after he handicapped Tommy. I mean, killing Abby after she was left to die of starvation, tied to a pillar, is truly horrible, but it still doesn't say: "Revenge is good."... Coming back to the farmhouse empty is punishment enough for being consumed by vengeance. However, it's just utterly insulting after not only sparing Abby, but literally SAVING HER LIFE.

Look... with all that being said, I still think you should play this game for yourself.

The graphics are some of the best in the industry and the gameplay is ok, but the story is very bland. If your playing this game for the story, don’t expect the level of uniqueness and effort that the first game delivered. The story is uninspired and nonsensical. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My final score for this game: 6/10

    Gameplay: 9/10
    Graphics: 10/10
    Level of Detail: 10/10
    Story: 2/10
    Character Developement: 4/10

Gameplay is way better than in TLOU 1, graphics and detail too. I mean, everyone who played it will say the same. I wont go further into it as it is kind of obvious just looking at 10 minutes of gameplay.

TL:DR: Any claim, that says, that the "feminism" in this game killed is, ist completely wrong. This game is completely different than TLOU 1, a very bad continuation of this legendary game imo. What they did to Joels Character is really stupid as he acts completely different than in Part 1. As for Ellie, I liked her developement, which is the only good think about the story. (Except the ending, which again makes no sense). For people who are looking for a new Game with great gameplay, detail und graphic I definitely recommend it. However, if you come from TLOU 1 and expected something similar good storywise you will get disappointed big time, just like me.

I kind of hate to say it but this game disappoints me and surprises me so much, i dont have any words for it. For starters, Joel died way to early. For people who wanted to see more Joel and Ellie action this will come as a big disappointment. Not only did it not make any sense in the beginning, but it was way too early. Next big nogo: They forced you to play as Abby, the killer of Joel. I mean, its kinda ok to do but then you also have to trying to kill Ellie with her. This is the biggest disappointment in this game ... As far as character development goes: The die way to fast to build up any relationship with them. They just feel blant with no depth in them. I liked Levs story though, that one was really ok. The rest was just plain boring.
Abby just feels like a unloveable person to me. I could not build up any relationship with her like I did with Ellie and Joel. She acts and looks like another npc within the world of TLOU who is not worth talking about. I know they want to progress the story with her in the upcoming titels, which I am not a fan of.

The Ending is really inconsistent. Why did we take the long path of revenge, killed dozents of innocent people to only let the person live, that killed Joel, Jesse and shot Tommy? Everything that was build up in the story for nothing, literally. The only reason that they let Abby live, is that they want to continue the story with Lev and Abby. I have no problem if they do it, but dont call it The Last of us as it as nothing to do with it. Back to the story: In the end we see Ellie retruning to the house, see her playing with a guitar which see can play proberly because of the two fingers missing and after that going away with the guitar in the camera. It feels like a goodbye ellie ending for me. We will probably see more from her, but she wont be the focus on the series anymore. My guess is that we join her journey on returning to jackson or something along the lines, maybe in a dlc.

The game has a really poor story, but good graphics, details and gameplay. You can feel the love put into this game from the devs. However, I cant say the same about the writers. For me the game completely destoryed both Ellie and Joel just to push a new char into their story, Abby. They try to once again revolutionize the gaming industrie but failed hard. For me it only gets 6/10 even if I want to give it even more. Biggest disappointment of this year yet.

Note, I played the entire game. I played it because I am a fan of Naughty Dog, the series and to formulate my own opinion on the game without the influence of other people’s comments on the game. During my gameplay I did not seek any plot information. However, I did know Joel died in the game, and Abby beats up Ellie at some point due to spoilers.

    Gameplay:
The game brings everything back from the first game and fine tunes it to be better. Scavenging and limited resources fits this game’s genre perfectly. Make every resource count. Combat with both humans and infected has to be strategized, specially if you play on moderate or above as you can’t run and gun your way through with limited resources. To me this is perfect. The few complaints about gameplay come in the weapon/resource swapping. A selection wheel would fit this game much better. For example, if you want to select a molotov and then get back to your second hand gun, you have to to press down on the d pad twice, throw molotov then press right on the d pad twice again, which feels clunky to do.

    Graphics and sound:
This is masterpiece in terms of technical achievement. You have to see it in person as streamed video takes away from the quality. This game kept making my jaw dropped every time a new location was shown. Its insane a console can handle those kinds of visuals. Sound is on par with the visuals as expected. Check out digital foundry for an in depth review of the technical aspect.

    Story:
The story really comes down to each person if they like it or not. I personally did not like some of the major events in the game. However the story does have some shinning moments that I enjoyed. The first major event is Joel’s death. Personally, I did not want him be killed off in the game. They way he is killed is terrible to say the least. His death does however fuel the anger of the player and you get in that mentality of revenge right away. I consider this event as moderately negative in my score. The second major events are killing off Joel’s killer accomplices. This was quite satisfying in terms of the overall story, avenging Joel. 4 are killed by Ellie, and 1 by Tommi. 2 of them maybe could’ve been spared (Mel and Owen) as they showed remorse or more redeeming qualities than Abby. This part of the story is highly positive in my score. The next major event is Abby coming back for Ellie and Tommi. This is a high tension part of the game. Unfortunately it pivots to show us Abby’s story for about 10 hours. This is a terrible move in terms of the story, completely lost interest in the story at this point as I was not interested or having fun playing as Abby. Abby gets as much screen time / gameplay as Ellie. I followed the story for the sake of understanding the plot and never in the 10 hours playing as Abby did I sympathize with her. In fact I attached more to 2 side characters in Abby’s arc, Lev and Yara. As I said, this is really going to depend on person to person, and I personally did not like or cared much about the story of Abby. The only redeeming quality that ever comes up for Abby is she saving Lev and Yara. Other than that Abby is not a good person but she isn’t evil either as a normal antagonist. She loses her father, killed by Joel, but the father was never explored/developed as a character so its pretty hard to care about him and Abby. I’d rate Abby’s arc as moderately negative. I didn’t see the point. The only decent part is saving the kids Lev and Yara. The rest of her arc is forgettable. Lastly, the end. We get back to the part where Abby finds Ellie, after 10 hours of playing as Abby, at this point I just wanted to wrap things up as the story had already dragged too much. They fight and Abby let’s Ellie live. Months later Ellie goes after Abby again only to let her go at the final fight. The ending is bad, mainly because Abby is not a redeemable person, there is nothing about Abby that makes her a character worth of redemption. The ending could’ve been easily saved by allowing the player to make the final choice, kill Abby or let her go.

    Plot holes:
Joel and Tommi’s naive dumbed down personalities. This is so unfitting for these characters after the first game. They walk into the wolf’s den to be killed.
Abby killing Joel after he saves her. Although Joel saves Abby, she never shows doubt or remorse.
Ellie not shooting as soon as she opens the door. She had a clear a clear shot at Abby.
Abby’s clan sparing Ellie and Tommi. This would never happen in the real world when 5 other people are there and know if they live they might come after them.
Ellie and Jessie walking straight into the fight with Abby.

I officially hated abby I still think how he didn't die. I am so hateful to this end, I wish ellie was happy if only she was with dina. I'm so sorry for everything but the visuals were really amazing. and the only reason rate it high is visuals because it's a terrible end. Also, I do not want to say the name of the beloved screenwriter, I am very angry with him. To have sympathy and empathy for Abby, she had to exist since the first game, and when her father opposed the scalpel and joel had to protect herself and ellie. And I want to say that Abby got a lot from Ellie. When I finished the game, I said everything was in vain. the visuals are amazing, but the story is garbage.

The story of the last of us 2 is uncomfortable, violent and tragic. It follows Ellie as she descends down a path of vengeance, and the player is there for every bloody moment of it.

My problems with the game begin with the moral line that is painted in the first game, where killing is necessary to survive in a post apocalyptic world. The first game created the definition of the moral grey area that comes with survival, but the last of us 2 not only crosses this line, it leaps over it and does a little dance to taunt you. The game is simply tragic, and not in an Othello kind of way. Rather the game feels like it is playing with the emotions of its fans with no payoff. The only purpose in Ellie's story I could draw by the time the credits rolled was a theme that has been told over and over again in many other forms of media, and honestly the theme had no place in the follow-up to a game about hope.

Playing the last of us 2 has ruined the last of us 1 for me. The original game used the main antagonists of itself as a metaphor for its story. The firefly's shared the motto "When you are lost in the darkness, look for the light". In the last of us 1, Ellie was the light. The last of us 2 takes this beautiful theme and burns it in front of you, forcing you take it all in as everything you loved about the first game is stripped away. As a stand alone story, the last of us 2 is beautifully written and a feat of story telling, but as a sequel to one of the last generations most beloved games this is unnecessarily cruel.

The gameplay of the Last of us 2 is an improvement over the original. It is still just as fun and intense, with a few small additions to the gameplay that add variety, such as new guns and toys for the player to craft and utilise in creative ways. There is not too much to say about the gameplay component other than if you enjoyed the last of us 1 purely for the gameplay, then you will me more than satisfied here.

Despite the story, the atmosphere, sound and level design of this game provide for some of the most beautiful scenarios I have seen on in generation of consoles. Just like how the first game felt like you were playing on a next generation console early, this experience is no different.

I can praise the last of us 2 on its gameplay and atmosphere all day, which if I didn't mention, it nailed, but I played this game for its story. The first game left me feeling empty, as I wanted to continue following Joel and Ellie's story and felt empty without them. This game did the same, but instead of wanting the game to continue I was left wishing it never happened. I wish that the continuation of Joel and Ellie's story was left up to my own imagination, as was originally intended. At the end of the day, I I would encourage you to play the game and form your own opinion, however be warned that the bigger the fan you are, then the bigger the letdown this will be.

Es una historia donde ellie se encuentra más madura después de todos los años, hacerme jugar con abby fue un poco doloroso y aburrido pero me termine encariñando con ella

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
