Highly amazing game in terms of visuals only. Combat is pretty decent but mainly follows the originals which isnt broken. The story is where it falls flat for me. Very poor writing and terrible pacing. Narratives and plot points aside it was just a very underwhelming game. 6/10

They made only few improvements with combat and stealth, which were better but after 10 hours it felt shallow since it didn't feel that different from the original.

Basically, moderately enjoyable gameplay but a story that feels generic uninspired.

The game play is the best you've ever seen. The story is good but it's nothing compare to the first part. Although it was a ballsy move for Naughty Dog to not even make another game of the Last of Us, but also to make this story that is filled with sadness, anger, confusion, and brutality as it should be, but I have to say that the story was NOT really what we wanted.

In these aspects, this game is an absolute step up from The Last of Us. However, the story fails to satisfyingly continue from where the previous game ended. Joel's final decision simply didn't need a continuation, as it left the player to decide if they agreed with themselves. Part 2, instead of analyzing how it would have changed the relationship between Joel and Ellie, turns into a revenge plot, that is both miserably dreary, and boring.
The problem is not the LGBTQ++ representation, in fact Ellie and Dina's relationship is the best part of the game. The problem is that this game could have been much more, its message could have been told in a much more creative way.
Normally, I'd say TLOU Part2 is a good, honest try, but knowing what went down behind the scenes, and the absolute ego that is Neil Druckman, i can not. as much as the story of the game, the story of its development leaves a sour taste.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After waiting 7 years the last of us 2 does not live up to the expectations of the namesake. The story is a mess, constantly flipping from present to past and most of the time feels like this shouldve been part 3. Joel is killed 2 hours into the game in an out of character moment setting the games plot into motion. Ellie now spends the game trying to find his killer and get revenge. The Last of Us 2 in many of its subverting expectation moments then has you play as Joels killer, Abby to lead up to the confrontation with Ellie. The two fight and Abby leaves them live after finding out Dina is pregnant. Ellie then decides to go after Abby again after Tommy guilt trips her and in the end lets Abby go. The game ends with Ellie letting Joel go and forgiving him. For me the main problem is Ellie has lost so much to Abby and in the end people died for nothing because the writers wanted to show how bad revenge is. An interesting idea but just poorly executed. Ellie is ready to kill Abby but after remembering forgiving Joel decides against it. I find it stupid and anti climatic that she would do this after what she put herself and her friends through. The writers clearly had a love for Abby and that bias showed throughout the game. She had all of the best moments gameplay wise and storywise got more interesting material. The one part of the story I really liked was the Lev/Yara and the Scars storyline. It was an interesting insight into another faction of the world and had some of the best moments gameplay wise. Riding on a horse from a burning settlement was one highlight. On the topic of gameplay this is the one place where the last of us 2 excells. It refines everything I loved from the first game and adds a couple of new mechanics like the prone ability. The environments are breathtaking and the collectibles really help build the world. There was nothing more satisfying than sneaking your way through a group of enemies silently picking them off one by one. The few boss fights the game offered were good but could be improved in future games but overall the gameplay was worth the price of admission alone. It is lacking the one thing that made the first so great, interesting characters and the characters from the first are either ruined or end up doing some stupid out of character moment to suffice the plot. The new characters are either boring or mildly interesting but overall are not up to the quality of this series. The game overall is not terrible but for a developer like Naughty Dog and a series like The Last of Us it is very dissapointing. Expand

From a technical standpoint, TLOU2 is amazing. You can clearly see the hard work put into the graphics, music and voice acting. The gameplay is fun. But the praise the first game of the series got mainly wasn't due to technical stuff. It was such a success because of the story and the characters and that's why part 2 should be judged for those factors as well. And they just don't hold up.
Part 1 was great because it was ambigous. As the player you had to judge the character's actions for yourself and there was room for interpretation. The writing was subtle and emotional. Yes, there were tense moments, shocking moments and sadness. But it was balanced out with lightheartesness and tragic beauty.
Part 2 throws that out of the window. It's one horrible emotional gut punch after another. Horrible things happen – but they don't make you pause and reflect because it's just a neverending onslaught of misery. At a certain point you stop feeling connected to the story because it's so incredibly obvious these things happen purely for shock value. A lot of contrived stuff as well. The main characters have so much plot armour – they're saved at the last moment again and again and again.
I could look past that, honestly. But what really disappointed me was how heavy handed the writing was. Gone are the subtleties. It's so obvious how the game wants to make you feel throughout the story – to a manipulative degree. But despite this I never felt connected to the characters because I was never onboard with any of their horrible and often times stupid choices.

    Spoiler:
I realy don't care how many dogs I get to pet as Abby, I still don't like her. The writers wanted the player to feel for her so badly, but I can't bring myself to do it. Even if she gets the most fun gameplay sequences. The problem I have with Abby is that she never ever reflects on her own actions. She's the one who encouraged her father to perform the operation that would have killed Ellie. And she never once questions her decision or her father's. She thinks she's justified in the beginning of the story and she still feels that way at the end. She even becomes Lev's Joel and kills her own people to save him. And yet she never makes that connection and never feels bad for what she did.

I was disappointed in Ellie's character development as well. She flip flops about whether or not she should kill Abby all the time. The story might have been salvageable if it had ended on the farm. But now I don't even feel invested in what happens to any of the characters in the inevitable third installment.

My biggest gripe with the game is that it tries to make you feel bad about playing it. What kind of decision is that? The message of the game is "revenge is bad, don't kill people". Ellie and Abby lose so much because they can't grasp that simple idea. And in the end both of them refrain from killing each other when they get the chance. But while the game tries to hammer down that moral standpoint, it makes you kill endless amounts of NPCs and makes it fun to pick them off one by one. That kind of makes the message of the game hypocritical. The whole story revolves around the consequences of Joel killing one NPC in the first installment. And here we are, killing hundreds more. So TLOS2 is basically a guy wearing leather boots and a coat made from polar bear cubs preaching about the moral superiority of vegan food.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The only reason I'm giving a five is because that score is meant for the Naughty Dog team who did all the wonderful work in combat, puzzles and visuals and not the story writing/screenplay. The story gets a ZERO from me and hence the score is FIVE. This game is an excellent example of how a game can be ruined if there's no proper story to tell. Even the stunning visuals couldn't save it from the plotholes, bad character depiction and insulting storytelling that was shown. The writer did no character justice - Ellie, Joel, Tommy, Abby - none of them were relatable. The former 3 had completely different personalities compared to part 1 and Abby's story should have been kept at first so that she can be relatable.
Other plot holes were the unrealistic demonstration of including a pregnant woman in combat, unrealistic body figures for women, men showing callousness during combat way more than they actually do, showing women as weak and unable to kill the last person they should let go even though she has killed SO MANY people shows that this game hates both men and women.

The image of LGB community was also shown really bad, the image they are trying to portray was so frivolous and mindless. This is not how LGB community is, just because they love the same sex or two sex does not mean that they have no morals or good ideals. They have been portrayed so disgustingly that people will feel like discriminating against them even more, thanks to this game.

Transgenderism is a thing that exists during our times because people are not trying to survive, they are just living without care in the world. In a post apocalyptic scenario, no one would be thinking whether they "feel" like a man or woman, everyone is trying hard to survive here and such things will not even cross their mind.

The story and scene setting is so unrealistic, it's as if nothing had been thought through and the writer just wanted to sell a game for money and not because he loves TLOU1.

This game is one of the worst games for me because
    1) A game is made because you have a story in mind, didn't seem like that case with this one.
    2) A game is made to detox you from the world so that you can face the real world again, this game didn't help me do that...hell it's not even a game, this story would have done better if it were a movie.

Very disappointed at the writers in Naughty Dog.

I was wary going into this game as I'd seen so much noise on social media and youtube about the plot and Naughty Dogs behaviour around release, but I was determined to ignore all that and make my own mind up. Here is the long story short - if you liked the way the first game played and looked - you'll like this one. They haven't done anything revolutionary with the mechanics etc, and the game looks amazing - the ruined seattle and santa location really immerse you into the desolate destroyed world. That being said, it did become a bit samey with just either stealthing or shooting your way through alternating hordes of people, or infected. With the odd added dog or shambler to mix it up. The story I felt a bit let down - the pacing of the game was weird, jumping around in the memories of backwards/forwards/backwards/forwards was clever...but just took me out of the immersion a bit. I like the way they brought the new groups in - the WLF, and Scars...but the newer characters that had any kind of role just felt a bit "throwaway" if that makes sense? Naughty Dog obviously set out to make a fairly gritty shocking game, and they succeeded..but at the detriment of having a good solid story which newer players to the genre could have loved. As I played on and got to the 20+ hour mark, I started to get a bit bored of the same grind and just wanted to speed through sections as fast as poss to progress the story. All in...this had huge potential, but it just didnt quite live up to my expectations (having loved the first game). I hope they do better if there is a 3rd installment. Expand

Where I think it falls short is in the structure of the narrative. I won't go into any spoilers, but never mind the main points of contention among fans of the first game. Whether you enjoy the story and characters or not, TLoU2 suffers from the inescapable feeling that it is actually two games duct-tapped together at the center and end. It makes sympathizing with and caring about most of the characters conflicting at best and - at worst - impossible for some.

Personally, I really appreciated what the game was trying to do, and I enjoyed my time with it overall. However the flaws in the writing and pacing are simply unavoidable. If you just want more of what the first game offered, TLoU2 will surely disappoint you. I went into this game spoiler free, with my head held high, filled with faith and trust in Naughty Dog's team. Let me be clear, this game is a 10/10 in certain aspects, such as visuals, sound direction, environments and voice acting. And it's with great disappointment that the 5/10 I gave this game, is mostly due to those factors alone.
I knew heading in that this was gonna be a story about hate, contrary to the previous game, which was about love. And even being mentally prepared for some events which were bound to happen regardless, that wasn't enough for me to overlook the major flaws in it's character continuity and confusing motivations. The pacing was horrible, many times making me just want to stop playing for the day. It's a shame, because I think, on paper, this could actually be a great game, and some changes to the structure could easily fix some of the most problematic issues the fan base has with the game regarding a certain character.
One major problem I had that continuously made me roll my eyes was how I could clearly see the writers intention when presenting me with forced sections of the game. One of the most basic rules in writing is to not think of yourself as smarter than your readers, it will always backfire. This constant feeling of being spoon fed emotions through a cracked one way mirror made me think the writer looks at me as if I'm an idiot who can't tell the difference between a real plane and a spoon filled with lies.
Long story short, I think it's fine to change the whole theme and feel of a sequel compared to it's predecessor, but there needs to be a solid reason to do so. The story tried to present something meaningful and deep, but it's shortcomings resulted in a shallow and convoluted narrative that by the end of the experience, left me feeling like my time was wasted and my trust in Naughty Dog corrupted.

The game world is beautiful and the gameplay is good, the story is just really poor, it honestly felt like a slap in the face to kill off Joel in that fashion then expect me to want to play as or care about his murderer, it just killed my motivation to play which sucks because I had been really looking forward to this game. In a game about post apocalyptic survival the emphasis on morals is a joke. They killed Joel to get your attention and send you on a mission of revenge, only to hold a moral high ground over your head and not allow you to take the vengeance you so desperately need. Great gameplay tho!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have finally finished this game and what a chore it was. This is the type of game that was so incredibly bad and lived up to none of the expectations I had, that I felt I needed to make an account just to review it. This is the type of game that if I were getting a prostate exam and I had the option to play a game and this was the only choice. I wouldn't play the game, I would focus intently on the exam instead. My first major gripe was the game was too long. Clocking in at almost 20 hours. If this is the type of game that's so bad that the only time I'm willing to even consider playing it is during a prostate exam I definitely don't want my prostate exams to last 20 hours and I also don't want to return that many times to equal 20 hours. My second major gripe is missed opportunities in the gameplay. You're going to introduce a completely new character and completely overlooked the possibility for new gameplay mechanics. Such as scavenging for all the necessary dietary supplements needed. We could have had mini games involved with eating massive amounts of protein and calories. Using a syringe to inject enhancements. Missed potential fun. but hey I'm not going to sit here and just talk about the bad stuff this game has, now on to the good stuff

The game luckily is not permanently installed to your hard drive. It is VERY deletable. if you own the physical copy the game, IT does eject from the PlayStation. It is not taking permanent residency in your system. just don't make the same mistake I did and eject the physical copy and forget to delete the install data.

Yes,story is great but fails to prove it by its bad order of events happening and flashbacks within flashbacks. It would be great to play as Abby in the beginning. The gameplay is far better from the last title, the AI works a lot better, puzzles have more variety now and are more creative. The level of details is insane a I can only compare them with Red Dead Redemption 2.But again, the story could be a lot better with better pacing and narration. Expand

The graphics and world is easily the best part of the game and is one of the best looking and most detailed console game to date. The gameplay is pretty much copy and paste from the first game with not much new innovation. It has the same craft and perk system, the same stealth sections. The only new editions seems to be the edition of dogs as enemies. The gameplay is good but a little dated but won’t really offer much of a challenge. The Ai is also pretty stupid and typical of modern video games. Story wise the game is a complete mess and at times feels like a badly written fan fiction by a high school student. The story has a strange structure and is a standard revenge story that’s been done since the beginning of civilisation. Ellie is still a well written and interesting character, however the supporting cast is weak and forgettable. Also the game make bizarre choices with regards to Abby, not really giving any reason for the player to like or care about her. Also the story tends to repeat itself and big chunks of could be removed and it would still play out the same. In short it fails to live up to its predecessor and offers very little replay value. This game is the case when there was a lot of noise and praise, but inside everything is sad and mean for full-price =(

Among the advantages can be distinguished:
    - Game is beautiful, the artists and level designers tried.
    - The animations are designed so that the characters interact with some things and the environment in an interesting way.
    - Sometimes fighting the battle is very pleased, as it effectively was made of the situation after injury or killing enemies.

    Disadvantages in my opinion are:
    - Structure of the scenario and its individual moments. I cannot believe in the authenticity of such a world and its heroes and understand that the authors wanted to make analogies in the characters' images. It is very difficult to create a sequel when there was an original before it, which a sufficient number of people already love. The authors had to understand - this is a responsibility and one must very skillfully play on the strings of the players' souls. But this plot and its details show the opposite - it works for fewer people than it could.
And yes, dialogues. This is terrible ((((I felt the poverty and stinginess of the characters' images. They can push off the heroes in the first hours, and therefore I felt bad from the beginning to the end of the game.
    - Feels like the game should have been with a more open world. The creators were clearly technically unable to do this (or there are other reasons for this). But the predetermined linearity with long history is disappointing. I very often wanted to return to a location nearby in one chapter or another (for example to collect items). But they don't let you do that. For me this is a confirmation in the absence of replayability. It is very difficult to force yourself to replay when I would like to complete achievements. Even after some time - there is no pleasure in it.
    - There is little music. I understand that the authors wanted to emphasize the atmosphere of the environment.
But the appropriate music is not enough to better connect the player with what he is experiencing. In some areas and moments it would be possible to make vocal trills of stringed instruments - it is depressing without them.
I could go on, but I am very sorry to write all this. Previously, I was familiar with heavy and dramatic works, from which you can cry, worry, but feel with all your heart - it was not for nothing. TLOU Part2 is not even something close to this.
The game could be a really wonderful creation, but they decided to make it something else, a way to convey only what you will either fully accept or reject.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The biggest downfall of this game is the Story in my opinion. The problem is, the first game makes it so easy to Love Joel and Ellie as characters, despite Joels questionable actions, so we naturally as players want the best for him after the events of the first game. He finally finds a daughter figure again in Ellie and then he is killed off within a few years. It just doesn't feel like the right sendoff.
Then we are forced to play as his killer and sympathize with her in a "Revenge is bad" narrative.
Its just a bleak and depressing game and it makes me regret wanting a sequel.
I get that Joel is no hero but I do think he deserved better than this. Abby did a lot of horrible stuff also but she gets to live but the main character of the first game doesn't? That is B.S.
The game also uses cheap tactics to try to make the player like Abby more.

    Pros: AMAZING visuals and landscapes.
Some good dialogue despite the poor story.
    Great flashback sequences.
    Solid Gameplay

But for a story driven game, the story being a Miss unfortunately makes the sequel feel not needed and disrespectful to the first games characters.

I played through The Last of Us Part I at least 10-15 times in the last 10 years (I'm not kidding). So, is The Last of Us Part II really as bad as everyone says, or is it something else?

Starting with the story, I am conflicted. After an event drives Ellie out of Jackson, She finds herself on a path of revenge throughout the city of Seattle against multiple factions in this 20-25 hour story. You battle the militant faction known as the "WLF" or "Wolves", as well as a religious faction of zealots known as the "Seraphites" or "Scars". This is the darkest story I've ever experienced and it exhausted me and made me miserable the entire way through, not because it's bad, but because I believe it's very well written. Having said this, I can understand why MANY gamers don't like this game. This is not a happy or joyful experience. No story has ever made me reflect as much as this story has, and I have immense respect for that. This is one of the few games that only require one playthrough to satisfy your desire to play it. Though if you play through this story, I highly suggest you go into and play with an open mind.

Next, I want to discuss the gameplay. The gameplay is very similar to the previous title with some new additions to mechanics like traversal. You still go around collecting scraps and ammo while crafting gadgets to get yourself through the next combat encounter you'll inevitably find yourself in. This does make the game feel a bit repetitive on new game plus settings. There is a new grappling hook adding additional levels to the game allowing for the player to get to harder to reach spots off the beaten path. They've also added jumping and the ability to go prone which paired with combat feel really good! Sliding between cracks in walls while trying to escape a pursuing enemy dog or disappearing into a bed of reeds trying to regain stealth and gain an advantage on your adversaries feels amazing and rewarding, especially on higher difficulties. Ellie also has her switchblade, allowing an ease on resources like the crafted shiv from the first game. There are also new weapons and gadgets that add to the experience like a pipe bomb or the trap mine (which yes just splits the nail bomb into two separate weapons but adds for a greater need for saving resources). This game is also incredibly well crafted and designed. In my two-plus playthroughs of this game, I ran into no glitches, bugs, or crashes. Everything works so incredibly well and runs smoothly.

Finally, I want to talk about the visuals. This game looks incredible on the Playstation 4 Pro. The environments are absolutely gorgeous whether you're exploring the overgrown urban environment of Seattle. the snowed-in mountains of Jackson, or a few other areas you'll find yourself in. The lighting and colors of the game are completely jaw dropping. Utilizing things like film grain makes the environments and background environments look extra good. The soundtrack is also the closest thing to perfect you'll find. Gustavo Santaolalla did an amazing job creating the music for this game, though it's hard to decide if it's better than the soundtrack of the first game.

This game is not what I expected. The story is way too dark, yet still undeniably beautiful. Pairing this with the combat in between areas of story and reflection, it works well. I definitely don't think this game is a 1-2/10, but at the same time, it's definitely not a 10/10.

As for the TLOU2, I was looking forward to it for years. Played through it and the story totally ruined it for me. The game is beautiful, the gameplay is fine but the pacing is really weird and ruins the experience, the dialogues are cringy and it has a Hollywoody feel, and not in a good way. There are too many characters with no character depth and the decisions they make are just plain stupid at times. I will play it through one more time just to see what I missed but I can't see myself picking the game up after that ever again. No multiplayer also sucks. If they ever release TLOU3, I won't bother buying it. Now I wish that Naughty Dog had stopped after the first game and just ended the story there. Expand

    Scores:
    Story: 5/10
    Gameplay: 8/10
    Graphics: 10/10
    Overall: 7/10

    Pros:
-One of the best looking games on PS4. Possibly the best
    -Zombies are intense when present
-The story was at it's best during certain Ellie flashbacks

    Cons:
    -Main story had major issues
    -New characters are largely forgettable
-Ellie/Abby parallel does not make sense

    Additional Thoughts:
I think a 7 might even be a generous score, but the graphics are undeniably amazing and there were parts of the story I still enjoyed.

That said, the main story was a bit of a mess. For the story to be successful, you had to buy into the Ellie/Abby parallel. That analogy did not work in my opinion. Ellie shows that she is generally trying to do the right thing on multiple occasions. I felt that Abby pretty much came off as a psychopath multiple times even during her section of the game. I understand they were trying to create some moral ambiguity, but Abby felt like a definite villain to me.

Joel's death can only be described as a bizarre choice by Naughty Dog. I suspected it was unlikely he would make it through the game, but to kill him so quickly and literally spit on his body? I cannot understand how anyone thinks that his death was well scripted regardless of his actions at the end of the first game. Can you imagine if this formula was applied to other games? Nathan Drake killed by a random enemy's cousin. Mario killed by a Goomba's grandson. Batman killed by henchman's neighbor. It sounds ridiculous because it is ridiculous! It didn't have to be an overblown theatrical ending, but what they went with was a bad choice.

I don't expect a perfectly realistic game since TLOU is a fictional world, but some of the choices characters make/things that happen are so ridiculous it took away from the experience. I will mention some of these at the end of my other points.

I will also say that those who think Naughty Dog is not pushing their political views into games are kidding themselves. They have been trending this direction over the course of a few games, and I do think it is starting to detract from the experience. I wouldn't say it ruins the game by any stretch, but it is pretty transparent.

The flashbacks were great. Really captured what made the first game so amazing. I also thought the ending flashback somewhat salvaged an otherwise bad story.

    Story Issues that Jumped Out:
    - Why would a pregnant doctor ever leave the safety of a camp?
    - Scars pretty much only exist to give Abby something to do during her part of the story
    - Why does Nora get to die off screen after she trashes Joel? Additionally, why is Ellie traumatized from killing her when she has killed dozens/hundreds to get there?
    - The doctor from the first game doesn't really resemble Abby's dad that much
    - Abby's backstory is way too short
    - Does WLF really just store all of their dead bodies in a tent inside their camp? Seems like an issue in a number of ways
    - How is Abby possibly fighting back at the end? She was hanging on the post long enough for her fellow prisoners to think she was dead, not to mention Ellie stabs her multiple times
    - Why would anyone fight zombies with their bare hands? Seems like Abby should know better
    - Seems extremely unlikely that Tommy would survive that gunshot wound
    - The fight with the giant Scar was cool, but no way he is fighting after having his face essentially cut in half
    - Ellie struggles to walk after being slightly stabbed by a tree, but Yara gets an arm amputated and is on a mission within a few hours

Overall, good looking game, story was okay at best. Worth playing to experience the visuals first hand, but nowhere near how great the first game was.

Unjustified 0/10s? Shut it down. Change the system so only Trusted™ access media can give scores for what is probably the most vital time for a game while everyone else has to wait 36 hours after release. That'll fix it! (No it won't you're just angering people more)

But this game gets a 5/10. It's mediocre as all hell. I was going to rate it 6/10 but everything surrounding the game just makes it worse. I couldve accepted joel dying because of his actions later on in the game but killing of one of your main characters like that just sucks. Then playing as the woman who killed the main character and trying to make us like her even though she is a psychopath and she is just unlikeable. Then hen its done tommy comes back and somehow survived a shot to the head. (yes it is possible but I mean come on) He is here to just make Ellie go after Abby because he is still mad even though Ellie moved in (kinda because she still has nightmares but still...) then after almost dying and one hell of a trip she almost drowns her she just lets her go. After all that!?! The whole story is based on ellies revenge and then she decides that she is gonna forgive.. I wont play this game ever again, such a shame ad the first one was a gem Expand

The actual gameplay is also really fun if you enjoyed playing the original (which I loved). Despite this, I only forced myself to finish the game out of respect for the previous instalment. New characters, which ND try hard to get you to like, fail to invoke any sort of positive emotion from the player. I got absolutely no enjoyment or satisfaction from the whole second half of this game - especially the ending. Clearly ND was going for something which took us out of our comfort zone. But instead of the story being edgy and divisive, it ended up being poorly told and a disservice to their loyal fans. I actually respect that ND told the story they wanted to tell, instead of the story we all wanted to hear - but then it should not be a surprise when people don’t like it.

    As a game: 11/10.
    As a story: -1/10.

Terrible story. Good graphics for the most part. Combat is decent. All in all it's a middle of the road game not sure how people are giving it 10 but it shows how out of touch critics are, no game is a ten not even the first I'm this series that gets an 8 from me and this is much much worse then the first game, heck the dlc from the first game is better then this.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm going to be conservative about the game. The Last of Us 2 is an average game at best and a 5 might be generous considering the hype they built up for it. I'm not going to be like other and rate this game a 0 out of 10 due to review bombing. There are till moments I have enjoyed, especially the early parts of the game set in Seattle I am very happy for. Ellie's rendition of "Take on Me" is one of the most visually compelling as well as musically beautiful cover of the song I've heard. Its beautiful and shows the bond between Ellie and her partner as well as her journey and emotions she feel. Also, the guitar moments are quite symbolic, its her remembrance of her father figure.

To praise the game, they did get the visuals right, The Seattle area was quite well done as hasn't happened before in the game. It is quite refreshing to have a nice open area to explore. Would have been nice of Naughty Dogs to ad more of those areas in the game, but oh well. The facial expressions and emotions shown on the characters are also well done. Its goes to show that ND still cares a lot about a certain level of details for the characters. This is proven in the flashback sequences as well. One of my favorite moments in the game is from Ellie in the space capsule. Its full of childhood wonder and the idea that if civilization does go back to the way thing were, Ellie would like to pursue an Astronomical career. Or something like that. The scene shows that she still has dreams. It was done very well.

Where the game went wrong are much more substantial in comparison to praise. The main problem of TLoU P2 is easily the pacing of the story. The first game offers a compelling story that feels like a journey and a bonding story between the main characters. The feels and journey just felt right all the way up to the ending, making the first game a masterpiece. In sequel, the story is similar to drinking a bitter coffee in one go and then you are left with just water. While I will praise how Joel's death did have an impact on my initial experience. It was a very sad moment. However, the rest of the journey felt predictable and just like any other revenge plot. I was left feeling like the story was padded out to support this instead of feeling like Ellie is going on a journey to find herself in this desolate world without her father figure. This was not helped by the game cutting out half way through to play as the antagonist Abby. While, I would say its different than the way other games approaches this concept. In this case, the decision was made poorly. To ask the player to play as the "bad guy", even if their back story is great is not the correct course the game should go. After gaming as Ellie for so many hours, just felt wrong to play as Abby, even if Abby has a similar back story as well. Ultimately, I felt dreading the experience and just wanted to soldier on, instead on wanting understand Abby's tale. On another note, Abby's side of the story was way too long compared to Ellie's story. It felt too stretched out and prolonging the inevitable. The inevitable climax was not what I expected either. Again the main problem is pacing. Having 2 "ultimate fights" to add more content in the game felt wrong and demoralizing. I my honest opinion, the game should've ended during the farmhouse segment. Instead, they decided to carry out the revenge plot. My question is why, and I'm left wondering when the game will end. On a gameplay perspective, the game has its moments. But overall, there are not as many wow moments that I'm looking forward to. Only the big Zombie glob Rat King boss fight was heart throbbing. The gameplay felt like the last game, just adding a little more to make it feel refreshing. Another issue that TLoU 2 suffers, are the characters. Compared to the last game, I much more than the main characters. Heck, for that matter, I don't know all that much about the main characters either, besides Ellie and Abby. There are not side content that explores their connection to the main characters, making me not care for them that much. This was done much better in TLoU by way of storytelling.

Overall, I would give the game a 5 out of 10, even lower is possible due to minor nit picks. The visuals and character models as well as facial expressions technology was well done, making TLoU 2 one of the most visually stunning games on the PS4. However, the game does suffer through a poorly paced story that came to a high point too fast that results in a predictable and stretched out story just to make this game feel like a big experience. I feel that ND dropped the ball heavily and rushed the game due to corporate pressure as well as the leaks that happened to the game before it was launched. They wanted to get the game out while there is still hype. Sadly, That is where I stand with ND. I feel the developer once an incredible legacy fueled by creativity and imaginative team. Those days feel like its over however.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I like some of the subtle aspects they nailed like the snowball fight and guitar mini game but the overall story is lacking. I understand the nihilistic theme but it was overdone with very few redeeming qualities shown in characters like other naughty dog titles. It was also too long. Graphics and mechanics are amazing

But the story, its not well done,
I like their idea, I like the ending idea but I think the story building throw all the game could be much better, could be more emotional in the way they wanted, they make us to have anger and hate for abby before playing with her, we should know more about her, the "compassion" should be earlier, the game make your first impression on abby to be the evil, a demon, the worst person on the LoU universe, and next try to change your mind, that's really hard to do and they failed on that, first impression is like a tattoo, you cant remove it.

Had they switched the narrative around, this story may have worked, though I still would be angry at how they marketed this story. But the sloppy way it is put together, who the heck wants to play as Abby after you see what she did in the first few hours?! Who cares why? And the lengths to crap on Ellie and her playthrough, while trying to make Abby's portion better? Oh please. And it's so freaking drawn out.I got to the point I couldn't stand playing anymore, and finally gave in to spoilers. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. the last of us part 2 is a great game. With beautifully detailed graphics as expected from a Naughty Dog game. The combat and exploration are amazing as well. But it can be pretty old over time making the experience too easy since the game has a lot of salvage to find and upgrades with ease. The biggest complaint that is on everyone's mind is the story. It is written well but told in the wrong way. Making people play as a random girl at beginning to kill off a fan favorite character isn't always a good way to debut. Especially since that character growth in the first game felt completely pointless since he didn't felt like the character from the first game. I don’t hate the storyline, but I think if they had presented it differently, I would’ve been more accepting. At first we get to play as this new character (Abby) in less than 1 hour into the gameplay, only to find out she’d kill Joel in the same first hour :)
So it doesn’t only make you hate Abby, but also yourself for playing this game. At this point most of players would feel so much hate and anger toward Abby and want to kill her. But then half wary through the game, they make you play for 10 hours as Abby to make you understand her character. All I got from that 10 hours is that Abby enjoys killing people and she’s the exact opposite of Ellie. During
Ellie’s part of gameplay, I loved Dina, but I wished that we got to see more of Tommy. They brought up Jessie which was the most unnecessary character. So in my opinion Tommy and Dina would’ve been more than enough as side characters. The only thing that kept me going was the thought that I would enjoy killing Abby, but that never happens. Leading to the worst ending ever.
My score on this game is mostly for the graphics and gameplay. It’s a shame that the storyline ruined everything...

The game for me is very good, not amazing or excellent but calling it anything less is just lazy. I had a fantastic experience playing this game and I would FIRMLY recommend it to anyone. The only element I didn't enjoy was Abby, but not for the reason most people dislike Abby. I enjoyed the story, Lev and Yara were genuinely interesting characters, but forcing the player to play against Ellie and the end was just cruel and whatever goal the developers had in mind, they missed it in my opinion.
Score, gameplay, acting performances, mechanics - all nearly perfect and had the game at a 9/10 for me. First 10 hours of the game with Ellie was incredible, but the Abby story was always going to fall short. The theatre encounter between Ellie and Abby was just abandoned for 10 hours and gave the player this deep sense of dread when we returned.

To conclude, if depression and emptiness was the mood the Devs were shooting for, they genuinely have achieved it. I just think it's sad we couldn't playmoree of what we fell in love with, Joel and Ellie. The flashbacks on Ellie's side were gripping and some of the best parts of the game. The Abby ones were completely non-compelling. Looking forward to a DLC hopefully and eventually the third and fhopefully final chapter in what will always be an incredible series.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
