Metacritic is a dodgy site. I was not able to post negative reviews for this game. However it allows positive reviews. So my real score for this game would be a 1. An awful game. But no game is perfect, as much of this game is extremely flawed. But first the Pros: As previously stated some of the story elements seem to be more well written than some of the others. The gameplay is fluid and satisfying, and all the animations, music, as well as the sound design, all show incredible feats of the push for perfection from Naughty Dog. However the majority of this game faces great criticism. So here are the Cons: The game seems to really push the idea that revenge is bad, and the cycle of it will just bring more hatred and destruction. However the idea is a tiny nail, being hit by the worlds largest hammer. The writers of the game made a story where in the game the "villain" of the story seems to get more revenge back than our main "hero". I put these in quotes because the game does a terrible job at establishing who our hero's and villains really are. A massive problem with any script or screenplay. I get the idea, but most movies and games that are successful normally provide context to who is the hero, and who is the villain. The second half of the story seems to just forget all of that which the first was building up. And trying to stay spoiler free here, one character in particular is connected to a very traumatic experience for another character, but seems to get off without any worry, as if nothing had ever happened. Most of the characters are given very terrible deaths. I won't go into them, but know that characters seem to die in the most pathetic way ever. And on top of their deaths, the people who witnessed them, never seem to bring up the fact that character died. With only one character getting mentioned frequently, but only because this persons death is heavily involved with the plot all about revenge. And lastly, characters are super underwritten, the characters of Dina, and Jessie, are cool in all, but we know nothing about them by the time that the game ends. And trust me what i'm about to say contains nothing that will be important to the plot. But all we know about Dina is that her sister died, and she knows what a synagogue is. Jessie has nothing other than that he had sex with Dina and got her pregnant a while before the story begins. Amazing character development Naughty Dog writers. All in all, the game suffers massively in the last half, but the first half is okay enough, with some actually good surprising moments that, along with its gameplay, it shines a very very light and pathetic light. The history has a empty final and idk if is good or bad. Sometimes could see a innecesary gore in the cinematics to explain the moment, it´s an excess. I visualized errors of script at the final with Abby vs Ellie-Dina, too.

    BIG SPOILER AHEAD!

The visuals are stunning and the audio is great. Gameplay is almost the same as in the first game which is not a bad thing because i enjoyed it the last time. They added some cool new elements and it just plays good. Story has its moments, flashbacks and parts with Joel are amazing. It just shows why people loved the first game so much. It was kinda disappointing that they actually killed him of in the first 2 hours in the game and that his death wasn't really paid of the way it could have been. But hey. Nothing can be perfect right? It kinda bugged me that i actually enjoyed parts with Joel's killer more than parts with Ellie. Maybe because it was lacking something? Maybe some killed of character? Just maybe. The story overall was ok. Some plot hole here and there, some weird characters and so on. As I mentioned there were parts that i really enjoyed and parts and decisions i just can wrap my head around. It wasn't nearly as great as first game when it came out but I had good time playing this and maybe some day i will play it again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After having played the game through. I'm willing to say this.

    #1. The game is gorgeous.
#2. The gameplay is solid if a bit out-dated.
#3. The story is erratic, I remember them saying on twitter that it was hate begets hate.

The story is erratic at best and fails to tell the story they want to tell. It's literally "Ellie lost everything in pursuit of revenge" while the new character got literally what she wanted. Joel is dead, but she lost some of her 'friends.' I guess that's the loss she had.

At worst the story is paper-thin.

My personal opinion is that they misused Joel entirely killing himself so early in the game.

I'm not particularly mad that he is dead. But the way it does it. They just wanted a shocking scene that no one was shocked by if you've had your head to the internet for any length of time where this game has been mentioned.

I honestly tried to distance myself from the spoilers, which I think I did admirably. I just didn't enjoy the game.

It's not a 1-4. It's a solid six on many levels, but I will not put it above that because of how erratic the storyline is.

Ok if we talk about the graphics of this games, we need to agree on this, they are gorgeous, the gameplay was ok, it wasn't great but it had some upgrades and smoothness while in combat, but what hits down this game into a six, is the story, it has so many plot holes and some characteristics that characters own that have nothing to do with their characteristics in the first game. For example, Joel, Joel in the first game is an unconfident man he does not trust anyone in the first game, he literally runs over a guy because he did not trust that he was injured and he knows it was an ambush, so now tell me where are this characteristic, Joel has, he literally just trust a group of guys, tells them their real names, where they live, and for worst they tell this group of not known people if they wanted they could go get supplies in their town, that just not characteristics of Joel and Tommy they would not trust anyone. It's just stupid, and finally the ending, wow that ending could not be more trash, just very poor storytelling. What a mess. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's get something clear first. I have played this game from beginning to end. I just finished it today so the entire experience is as fresh in my mind as it's going to be. Frankly, it's getting extremely tiring at this point that the mainstream gaming media, naughty dog, and others such as the game's voice actors are blaming the extremely poor audience scores for this game as being caused by "bots" or people who've never played the game or have any intention to. I played the game. I'm an actual human being, not a bot. I've owned TLOU1 for years, both the original PS3 version and remastered. It's one of the best games I've ever played. With that said, TLOU2 most certainly is not.

As much as I tried to go into this with an open mind, and I tried extremely hard to be open minded about what Naughty Dog has done with the story of this game... I just couldn't really get past a lot of the glaring issues with this game's narrative. The game does have redeeming qualities and it deserves to be scored higher than say a 3 or 4. For some examples of the game's positive aspects -- the visual fidelity is genre defining and the best I've seen on a console, right up there with other titles like RDR2 or Horizon: Zero Dawn. The game also gets a lot of the finer details right. The gore and violence is some of the most realistic and unnerving I've ever seen in a game. Blowing a human or infected up with a pipe grenade looks like something straight out of "Saving Private Ryan". It is gruesome and extremely grounded in reality. The exploration is much more fleshed out in TLOU2 than TLOU1. There's sections that feel more open-ended, with some open-world elements, and due to that it feels less linear than the original did. Furthermore, the sounds and weather effects are extremely impressive. Firearms sound powerful and realistic, and a lot of games get this wrong...TLOU2 does not.

But sadly, we're already onto the negatives. This game has serious flaws in it's story-telling, and how it weaves it's narrative. The pacing is all over the place, especially in the first 5-6 hours where it's dreadfully slow. Up until you get to seattle, the intro to the game is long, boring and feels like an overdone tutorial section. As far as the story and conclusion, I'm struggling really hard to find any redeeming qualities that would let me put it up on the same pedestal as TLOU1. This game isn't a masterpiece as the critics are panning it. It's just not, and if you're being objective you know this isn't a 10/10 game. Sadly I don't think many critics are being objective with regard to this game. The game unravels pretty much all the core redeeming qualities from the first game and it tries extremely hard to tear down the original characters and build up new ones but fails in the process. By the end of the game, I felt zero sympathy for Abby or what she's suffered from and it's because of her utter lack of remorse and general actions that make me feel that way. She's a terrible human being, and even her closest "friends" remind her of this on several occasions. Ellie is pushed to do terrible things, but the entire time you see her struggling with her morality. You never once see that with Abby. As far as Joel's outcome, I think it was an utterly shallow ending to his story. It could've been executed in a much better way. Joel has wronged people, and has sinned himself. Killing him off isn't out of the question, but the way in which Naughty Dog went about his story is just insulting to fans everywhere.

The predominant feeling I had upon finishing the game is that I felt taken advantage of by Naughty Dog. I feel confused, torn, manipulated and lied to with clever tactics and trailer editing. I didn't feel enlightened. I didn't feel sad. I didn't feel angry. I just felt.... sort of used and abused. And I can't help shake that feeling. Like I said, the game has redeeming qualities and it's gameplay loop is enjoyable, albeit the game feels about 8-10 hours longer than it truly needs to be and because of the pacing issues, it starts to really drag later on. If you can get past the story's glaring weaknesses, it's worth playing through the game at least once. The stellar graphics and finer details will provide some enjoyment in between the dreadfully depressing and lackluster story beats. Is it a masterpiece? No, not even close. It doesn't even hold a candle to TLOU1. Is it utter trash, or the worst game ever made? Not quite. It's a game that couldn't live up to the incredibly high standards of the original, and it suffers for it in the end. It's an OK video game... it's a terrible The Last of Us game. As cliche as that sounds. I just felt compelled to write this review after reading so much trash about how all these negative reviews must be the result of bots. No, we're human beings too. We just expected better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay is a refined version of the original. Playing grounded is heavily recommended. The story is just horrendous with the pacing, lackluster of character development, unnatural dialogue, illogical plot, and felt rushed. They disrespected Joel and Ellie. The game made Joel seem like an incompetent survivor leading to his death, which his death didn’t make sense at all. Joel felt like a short lived cameo rather than a crucial side character to drive the plot forward, but rather the plot drags him. Ellie had no character development except being in a pissy mood the whole game. Ellie literally kills everyone and sacrifices everything to waste her opportunity to kill Abby. Just don’t get me started on how they kept shoving down the same theme of revenge repeatedly. The only good thing about this game is the soundtrack, gorgeous aesthetics and graphic fidelity, refined stealth mechanic, and the intense set pieces that fuels you with adrenaline. This is coming from a person that played the whole game with an open mind and on grounded difficulty. This game would be alright if it was a stand alone game not associated with TLOU. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

For who wrote the story: You could actually use the whole game to talk about Abby's story and let Joel die at the end of this game, to give us enough time to understand this new character and also the whole story from another perspective... Then save the story of this game for TLOU Part 3 if there is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off, the most amazing graphics I’ve ever seen in a game I can just imagine how good it’ll look on PS5. However, as you may already know the story was quite opposite. People who worked on the first one didn’t work on the second one and I think that’s one of the reason it’s on that level. A lot of the plot seems very forced and the timings are just plain stupid. Ellie and Dina are making out just before the death of Joel, imagine the guilt. While Joel, tommy and Abby are running from the infected, tommy out of nowhere just tells Abby their names, while literally running from zombies For no reason And it felt so forced you could really tell it and it just took you out of the immersion. Abby was saved by Joel and didn’t even think twice before brutally torturing him to death that is either very lazy story telling or the studio wanted us to have hatred against Abby. If so, then why on earth did we play as her for 10 hours, the game tries and makes us feel bad for her but it’s just made everyone hate her even more. She has done so many evil actions. The flashbacks were what everyone really loved and honestly they should release a game with just the flashbacks. Naughty dog is known for misleading trailers even in tlou1. In the ending where Ellie is about to kill Abby she gets a flashback of Joel and instead of getting angrier she just lets her Abby go. All in all, it felt like a very forced game with very little reasoning and I feel like it could have been much better if the staff of the previous one worked on this one aswell. Expand

After being mad skeptical of everyone for most of his life. Then we have the retcon of abby's surgeon father (who looks NOTHING like the surgeons in the room when joel kills them). The game just forces you into a bloody revenge tale and constantly reminds you how bad you are. And when you get to the end, Ellie simply stops being blooddrunk? If ellie would have stayed on the farm with dina, Abby would have died.

There were some good moments to the game. Ellie playing "Take on Me" was one of them. Her and Joel pretending to be in a spaceship is another. The graphics were fantastic. The production value was top notch and the level design was beautiful. These reasons saved the score from being 5 or lower. I can certainly see someone give this a 7, maybe an 8 if they really did enjoy it, but anything higher is SUSPECT. The story is not enjoyable or coherent.

I'd save the $60. Don't simply buy a game because of "perfect" reviews or bc of nostalgia from the first game. Vote with your dollars. GG

It's not because Joel died but HOW he died!

The Joel in the sequel completely contradicts who he was in the 1st just to favour the plot.
That is a pure example of poor storytelling .

Being forced to play a irredeemable character for the later half of the game is just pointless and feels infuriating to play!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So i completed the story at 5 am today and i have to say i'm overall disappointed with this game, HERE ME OUT.

So the pro's to this game are the attention to detail, from the graphic way of killing people to the pure genius of the sound design IE hearing people gargle on blood as they die or their friends calling out in anger/grief for them or just the sheer atmospheric music. The graphics are amazing and seeing someone's brains splatted on a wall after a head shot is an impressive feat of graphics.

    HOWEVER
Based on how violent and brutal the way you can kill people is, that can also be a drawback. It's traumatising the first time you kill one of the dogs let alone if like me you accidentally pressed the wrong button and bashed ones head in with the big hammer.

    NOW THE CONS.

The story, i mean like really, what did they think was going to happen when they decided to make this the story plot. They kill off Joel, the character that we adored from the first game and the dynamic he and Ellie had in the first game was just obliterated with a gold club (He deserved better)
The way Abby is like Guess when asked who she is like Joel would have any idea who she is. TO THE FACT THAT THEY MAKE YOU PLAY AS ABBY FOR AT LEAST 10 HOURS IN PART 2 OF THE GAME. Like they give you a character to hate like really hate and then they go, here play as this character to try and make you understand her reasons and sympathise with her. which is impossible to do, like at all. Then we get to the ending, Abby lets Ellie go in a way to make you feel like shes changed and is worthy of any forgiveness you may of given her while playing her character (still made no difference to me) but then you get to the very end and it Ellie just beats her to a pulp, looses her guitar playing fingers in that fight too and then lets her go after a flash memory of Joel as if the game is trying to say, Joel wouldn't of just killed her straight away (we know from the first game he wouldn't of hesitated). That was very lack lustre for me and I understand the games reasoning of like its a revenge story that turns into Ellie's grow story at the end but like it just did not win my heart over ending the game that way. Like Ellie through away her relationship with Dina and her kid to go "finish it" to then just not do what she was going to do. what was the whole point of showing the house section of the game knowing Ellie just gonna mess it up in the end for no reason.

Overall, The visuals and the sound are incredible, the extra game mechanics like crawling, the extra crafting options, swimming, the puzzle type ways to get through a building are all amazing and that is why this game gets a 7 from me.

It does not get any higher than that due to the disaster of the story-line.

Also, just to clarify should any media want to take my slightly negative review and say its due to the progressive characters in this game. I fully support people in general no matter race, gender, sexual preference. As long as you are not hurting anyone else, I care not for what you look like, what you identify as or who you date.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beside spoiler alert, in my opinion this game cannot have a 0 or 10 score, there are positive aspects that do not allow me to give it 0 and there are also, negative things that block me from the 10. let's get into it and why i don't go over 6 overall:

Graphics: This is the best aspect of the game for me. The evolution it took from the first game as expected, mostly on the environment level. It is like cotton candy for a mouth, it melts your eyes, from the darkest zones in the city of Seattle to the country side of Ellie's house with Dina, it is superb.

Voice Acting: Well, this a second if not equal to the graphics in score. Troy Baker, we get less of him on this second game but, well, top notch as usual. Ashley Johnson, Jeffrey Pierce, Shannon Woodward, Stephen Chang, they all do an awsome work also. The surprise (which is not from her career and talent) is Laura Bailey, that even if you do not like Abby character, Laura performance makes you like it at the same time. Wonderfull.

Soundtrack: Gustavo Santaolalla does not desapoint. I could say the that environment sounds are not that great(could have more detail), and the key moments of the game, where the drama hits hard, could have a more heavy impact music, but that does not lower the quality overall. The cover songs and the guitar songs are wonderfull to watch/hear and will imprint in your memory.

Gameplay: This is not negative, but not too positive also. From a TLOU player, they do not change a thing. It's not bad cause i enjoyed the first game, but i expected some type of evolution. like more fluid actions in combat or even actual choices in game progression for example.

Story/Character Development: This is the key for me. Why? TLOU is a story driven game. It can have great graphics, music, acting, everything, but the game in the end, is a story driven game. This is also my opinion in the end. Everyone that is a fan, a true fan, cannot deny that the game falls short, for Abby surviving, and Ellie after losing everything, does not avenge Joel and ends alone... We watched a first game around Joel and Ellie, Where Joel would move the world to save and keep Ellie safe, but now, Ellie cannot do it. Let's be honest, Ellie like the game is made now, leaves in the air that the decision to spare Abby was due to what Joel would want for her, to release herself from the guilt and him and be happy without hatred. But if it was Joel in her place, every single one of them would have died without a second thought :) In my opinion also, the timeline is bad, i believe the game was more likeable if we alternate between Abby and Ellie more and not having that, torturing cliffhanger of Allie begging for Jimmy's life. I believe the purpose of the game, like it is, is to make you like Abby nevertheless what happened, so you can see her story, her choices, so you can accept her survival in the end. This is a creator decision, i won't argue with it, but has a fan, we expect to Joel, one of the pillars of the story of TLOU even dead now, to not go insignificant, like not being avenged after all he passed for Ellie, he didn't even had the chance to give his life for her (this could have been much better, having Ellie kidnapped to be killed by Abby and he dying to save her for example, could have been done). Joel dies to fuel the entire story, Let's be honest, Joel's death is the engine of this and ends with low closure for me. Anything could have happenned but Ellie needed to end this. I spent my fight with Ellie in the theater wishing to die so Ellie kills me, and the fight at the end trying to kill Abby without success... Has a TLOU fan this was my heart...

In the end, we cannot argue with the superb technical quality of the game, and the director of the game is to be praised for this, but like everything, the success of a game is made by the players, not the technical analysts only. I honestly believe this game had to much influence from real world issues and less from what made the first game unique and nearly perfect. It is not an 8 or 9 because of this. The main aspect falls short, the story, not only the timeline construction but the expectations from the selling point, Ellie's revenge "of something".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The graphics and sound effects are excellent. But this is also the only really good thing.

The gameplay is similar to the first part, which isn't necessarily bad. But after 7 years of development one could have expected more. For my taste there are also too many annoying Quick-Time events.

The AI opponents are blind in places and mostly follow fixed routes. This could have been done better in an AAA game.

The story is the real point of criticism. It is garbage.

First the death of Joel: He is letting himself be led like a lamb to the slaughter in the first two hours of the game. Tommy has also lost all of his survivor instint. With the early death of Joel one feels screwed because the trailers suggest he's going off with Ellie. This was the first point – two hours into the game! – where i considered quitting.

Still the game had the potential to entertain me because Ellie was still left. But her character development was a total failure. The multi-layered personality of the first part became a female captain Ahab, who wanted to slay his white whale at all costs. Totally flat. The only thing you can say about Ellie in the second Part oft he game ist that she's lesbian, vindictive, and extremely dangerous. She has become absolutely boring.

But the really **** part is that you have to play half the game as Abby, the murderess of Joel. She is a completely psyopathic, testosterone-damaged mass murderer who enjoys killing. One of the most unsympathetic characters I have ever seen in a game/film. Compared to her, Joffrey Baratheon is a lovable guy. When the gameplay switched to Abby i stopped playing, but restarted later to hopefully get revenge on her. So I spent half of the game thinking, "When am I going to switch back to Ellie and be able to kill Abby?

But even that is not to happen. In the end, after Ellie has lost everyone and sacrificed everthing for her revenge and is literally seconds away from killing Abby, she just stops and lets her go. Wow, that is like Captain Ahab stopping to stab Moby Dick because in the last moment he recognizes the senselessnes of his acts.
Why does the player not get the choose what to do? Every third-class RPG gives you choice an builds an individual end based on your choices.

One can sum up the story oft he game with one sentence: revenge ist bad. That´s it.

In the end TLOU2 is a solid survival action game with great graphics, great sound and an average gameplay.
However, the plot is more than thin and the characters are hollow and unsympathetic.

I did not enjoy the game at all and would personally give it zero points.
But since only half of it is bad - story and character development - 5 points seemed more appropriate. It is works as an undemanding shooting game.

It has some good aspects and some bad ones. The graphics are amazing, the gameplay is good for the most part, and there are really nice parts of the story. The main flaw is making the user play as Abby for ten+ hours. She never grows as a character, never shows any remorse for her actions. Joel was an antihero who did bad things, but still had a heart. Abby is just a straight up villain and psychopath. That said, I do think it's worth playing and has some really cool moments, but all in all is not a masterpiece. Expand

Overall TLOU 2 is an ok game. I don't really have any problem with the story overall although I do wish certain things had been presented differently than the current implementation and I really like the exploration in the open zone areas.

IMO, the game has taken a step back in a few areas in terms of polish, melee combat, and stealth.

I've encountered a few bugs throughout my time playing which while not egregious I did not experience in TLOU 1. This mostly takes place as AI pathing issues and clipping through a wall or floor which requires a restart. Nothing gamebreaking but just kinda annoying in general.

In regards to the melee combat, I feel like the flow of it has suffered in order to make way for the dodge mechanic. I can no longer rush up and surprise them with a melee hit to stun them and either take them out or throw them into a grab. Most of the time doing so involves either getting riddled with bullets immediately or treating it as a normal combat initiation.

Stealth wise, I feel like the things they've tried to spice up the stealth mechanics such as dogs that can catch your scent and chase you or being able to hide in grass to be more difficult to detect, ultimately ends up muddying the stealth play and I wish it was more like the stealth of TLOU 1.

Regarding the enemy AI, I feel like compared to TLOU 1, they are much more likely to instantly shoot you when you pop out of cover to take a shot at them or shoot multiple shots at you in the time it takes to shoot one shot at them but that might just be me so I'm not holding that against it.

Visually, the game is great but some parts are a little too heavy on the film grain where it just seems a bit over-bearing for certain parts of the presentation.

Overall, I think it's a good game. Not terrible, not amazing, but somewhere in the middle.

Ai chega o meio do jogo e a coisa começa a ir agua abaixo...

E a Ellie?

Gameplay is barebone rehash of part 1 with a pathetic progression system that might as well not be there. The reason that it exist is to make me explore the empty world, opening cabinets and desks. Enemy variety can't even be discussed because they're all the same ones from the first game (e.g. Two boss fights were against the same enemy, who was also the same boss enemy that was in the first game). Althoug, I have to admit that fans of the Assassin's Creed series will be delighted to find that TLOU 2 is also filled with walk and talk sequences that contain nothing but cheesy dialogue.
The story is nothing special. Not bad, not good. It's akin to something you'll find in a B movie that you'll watch to fall asleep to. Filled with dull tropes (e.g. kill all the underlings with no remorse, but deaths of characters with dialogue suddenly and coincidentally always get the protagonist emotional), uninteresting and underdeveloped cast of characters, and contrivances to keep the story from cornering itself (e.g. An enemy character has both protagonists under his mercy, but he pockets his gun to slowly choke one of our hero, completely turning away from the other protagonist, who just happened to break free of her restraints at that exact moment).
All in all, if you turn your brain off while ignoring the ramblings of 80% of the cast who are desparately trying to make you feel Ze Deep Emoción, you will enjoy pretty sceneries of the post-apocalypse with some gunplay to keep the game from becoming a walking simulator. Keep in mind that I want mechanically in-depth, customizable, and challenging gameplay in my games, so this game is completely not my taste. But I finished the first one, might as well.

This game not only disrespects my favorite character, but it also destroys the characters from the first game. I hate being forced to play as a psychopath ( because that is what Abby is) who is trying to hunt my favorite characters. I don’t like having to beat a 19 year old girl Or playing as a character who says “Good” when she finds out that she is about to slit a pregnant woman’s throat. The only time when Ellie and Joel felt like the Ellie and Joel from the first game is during the flashbacks. I also hate how the game tries to humanice Abby. The marketing lies don’t help either. I’ll start of by saying TLOU 2 is a technical marvel. From its great level design and graphics to its improved combat system. That being said what you are probably hearing about the story being lackluster I have found to be true and generally I agree with that sentiment. The first act of the game is relatively strong. We see our first divisive plot point here and while I wasn’t happy when the initial plot event happened I understood that it fit the world in which the game is based. The first act also does a good job of introducing new characters and getting us to care about them. After that though the story takes a huge risk and while I commend naughty dog for trying something different, it doesn’t work for me and actually ruins the story for me as well as the replay ability of the game. The player is forced into a parallel plot line for the entire second half of the game which takes away from the potency and emotional drive of the first act. At this point in the game we also start to see some serious pacing issues that hinder the game even more. When we finally reach what we think is the conclusion we are thrown into another chapter of the game which proves to be pointless and does nothing but makes you further question what naughty dog was thinking with their writing. By the time you reach the actual finale you have likely been ready for the game to be over for several hours. The ending is dry and doesn’t resolve much of anything and leaves you wishing they had never made a direct sequel following Joel and Ellie’s story. Unfortunately this isn’t a worthy sequel to tlou. It can be good as a stand alone experience but most will likely be upset with the path chosen by ND here. I would give it 6/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to wait until I played the game to offer my opinion. I wish there were more of that here, as there are definitely some great things in this game.

The Great: The acting in this game is astoundingly good! Everyone who played a part here absolutely nailed it. The visuals are also absolutely stunning. Besides the amazing look and feel of the game, there are tons of awesome details and Easter eggs and give this world a life of its own. Big ups to the designers and actors who brought these characters and world to life. The accessibility features in this game set a new bar for the industry and deserve some serious praise. I hope this becomes the new standard. The work in these areas is beyond excellent! The inclusive cast of characters definitely deserves mention. I loved it in the first game and love it here as well!

The Good: The soundtrack is very good. The sound designers and musicians responsible for the audio in this game should be lauded. The atmosphere created here is really nice. I found myself closing my eyes just to listen at times. I also like a few of the gameplay tweaks like the consumable shivs going away. Not having to scrounge for blades made me feel like the combat was more realistic in some ways. While I feel this led to some repetitive actions, that was only due to my desire to be efficient. It's certainly possible to play this game with a more action oriented feel.

The Bad: The story in this game is lacking to put it mildly. As a huge fan of the first game (I've played it through at least a half dozen times), I was disappointed to see characters act against their core nature as laid out for them before this release. It's possible someone can change, but I don't think that anyone could justify one of Joel's decisions in particular, or the flip flopping of Tommy and Ellie repeatedly throughout the game. The new secondary characters, with exception of Dina, feel flat and I didn't find myself with much reason to care about them. The secondary player character, Abby, is so close to being great that it's frustrating she wasn't. In what felt like putting the cart before the horse, we're asked to try to empathize with her and get to know her after she commits some horrific acts. This becomes impossible when she repeatedly does more horrible things without a hint of remorse. Maybe this is intentional, as we see Ellie react in horror at her own actions quite often. Abby wasn't likable because she is hateful and possibly psychotic. Kudos to Laura Bailey, seriously! She made me hate this character, which I think was the point. In a game that is linear and story driven, the disappointing story hits hard in regards to my score. I had a hard time finishing it, and only did so out of love for several of the actors involved and because I'd already spent the money. I regret that decision, as the ending made me feel like the writers were laughing at me while making a rude gesture. I feel like a few tweaks to the order of events in the game could really make it better, and make that ending feel less like a slap and more like a moment for introspection. Pacing was odd, and I don't see myself going for another playthrough.

The Unacceptable: I counted at least 3 flat out lies told pre-release by the developers of this game during my playthrough. I think it's ok to say nothing at all rather than set expectations based on blatant lies. One of these lies in particular made me want to stop playing the game altogether. I never would have spent a cent on a game that forces me to kill a dog in order to progress. Besides being incredibly triggered by that moment, I'm frankly disgusted and disturbed by that lie itself. The embargo on reviews that led me to spend money on this game is insulting. It would be like asking someone to review the Star Wars films based only on their lightsaber battles. Then, the tactics Sony used to censor anyone talking about it pre-release feel ethically disgusting.

    The Result:
I will be wary to play Naughty Dog games in the future, shame on them for lying to me. I will definitely follow these actors and some designers to enjoy their next projects.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game left me completely speechless in the end. It literally will not leave my mind. Throughout this game I was constantly feeling anxious and on edge. I had no idea what was gonna come next, especially after what happened within the first couple hours. I think I feel heartbroken from Joel’s death and the way it was executed. I can see why only Joel’s character and his death would fuel such a revenge story for Ellie because we haven’t touched on any other characters in such a complex view. The actions of Joel at the end of the first game would of been done by any parent in that given situation because you’d do anything to protect your child in any situation. Ellie never had that parent figure properly fleshed out and Joel was that figure for her. The fact that Abby tortures Joel to death does not balance out the fact that he literally only shot her dad who was the surgeon doing Ellie’s op as he was in the way. She literally comes in with no flash backs or build of any story and just comes in to wipe the best character from the series who most people love. To then only make us play as her for god knows how long to try and justify her motive and explain her story but the chance for that died after what she did to Joel because he’s a character many people are emotionally attracted too. Without Joel, there isn’t a last of us game. I guess if stuff was rearranged in the game and they told a bit about Abby beforehand then maybe she wouldn’t get so much hate as a character. Tbh like many others I despised her from that moment with Joel. I knew straight away that this was a revenge story. I couldn’t wait to pick off the group involved one by one. Could you imagine if Ellie was in Joel’s place? Joel would literally massacre the whole WLF. He pretty much wiped out the fireflies. The “if I ever were to lose you” song between Joel and Ellie imo tells me if one lost the other due to somebodies actions they would lose themselves into a pit of such darkness and depression that the only light shown is through exacting revenge on those responsible. At the end of the game, to not be given the choice to kill Abby or let her live is so frustrating and takes away the point of the revenge story. Even just having that choice would put satisfaction there. But I know revenge is never the best option. But in a cold and depressing apocalyptic world, revenge fits perfectly here. The world known before the virus is gone. People are not the same anymore. There are plenty of others who can explain or pick a part this story better than I have. In terms of gameplay and graphics, it’s absolutely amazing and mesmerising for how far technology has come. The world is vibrant in its own dark and twisted way, yet the beauty of Mother Nature taking over again is satisfying to look at. I think these aspects of the game have been shattered by the story aspect which is a huge shame. I’m sitting here wanting to like this game for everything it provides but I can’t. To think those who’ve waited 6/7 years for a sequel, to only be let down by the main protagonist of the first game who had such an amazing character built throughout, be taken away by a character nobody sympathised with or gave any care too. I’m not gonna go give it a terrible score because of the story side, as the game is built with so many amazing things. I’m writing this raw and as I go since the game really has hit me emotionally. Which in itself shows the game can be done in such a better way. I know from the many reviews I’ve seen and looking through reddit, that people want to forget this game exists or for it to be redone. I guess I sit on the side of wanting it redone, but nothing is ever perfect in life and we don't always get the things we want. I can see what naughty dog were trying to do but the way they executed it was wrong. A few things from the first game seem to be thrown out the window. Like Joel not trusting anybody and being cautious yet here his Guard is basically down and doesn’t acknowledge the danger of Abby or the situation he’s in. Yes time in a community can change how you view people but not when it comes to strangers who appear just outside the settlement you live in randomly. I guess to finish off I’ll just say that the experience was a rollercoaster in ways but not in the way it could’ve been. Graphically the game is exceptional and the gameplay with its tweaks is great. But for me the story overshadows the positives and I’m left feeling bittersweet and empty in some ways. Ellie said in the first game she doesn’t wanna be alone, yet in the end, that’s exactly what she is. For her character and the journey laid out infront of her, it really didn’t justify her or meet the expectations this revenge story was meant to be. It should be ruthless and seen till the end. We’ve done all the killing to get to this end point, but somehow not ending what was started messes the whole point of this story. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First every review because wow!

So I had hopes the narrative wasn’t that bad after hearing everything, I did stay as spoiler free as I could until I finished the game, but wtf naught dog. Killing the main character from the previous game to make a revenge story was a good idea, however the execution was hot garbage. We go through all the work to take revenge as Ellie to then play as Abby the villain to make us see her side and, I’m assuming, make us feel for her. Which in someways it did for me, but then you make us continue to play as Abby when we confront Ellie forcing us to beat a beloved character which was a BOLD decision that backfired immensely with everyone’s feedback being the clear example that it was a garbage decision. Everything up to that point was, in my opinion, still leading up to be a fantastic game. But the decision, again, to make us fight Ellie and win, is when you lost me. Have you had a switch back to playing Aly when we got to that confrontation making us beat Abby, I would’ve been fine with rest Love it. If you want to still kill Jesse do it, mortality wound Tommy or kill him I wouldn’t of cared as long as we got to kill Abby. Heck you could’ve even killed off Lev as they were leaving the island so you wouldn’t of had to involve him at that point. But it felt like you wanted to drag on the story from that confrontation which is a load of BS in my opinion. You should’ve ended it at that final confrontation and ended peacefully with Ellie and Dina at the farm raising JJ. That could have been at the perfect finish for this game but you squandered it. Do you let Abby win by making us beat Ellie. You then make us play as Ellie again to go and kill Abby which when we get that chance we let her go, then for more insult to injury when we get back to the farm Dina is gone and we don’t even know if Ellie finds Fina and they potentially get back together raising JJ, you just end it there. Honestly, I think if you chose to ha e had Lev died while being strung up on the beach with Abby thus giving Ellie essentially a mercy killing but still a revenge killing would have been better then what you decided. But instead you choose to make us go through all that to forgive Abby through PTSD on Ellies side and when we get back to the farm we find out Ellie has basically lost she loved even her ability to play the guitar correctly which is minor I know but still. I don’t even wanna play new game+ because there’s no satisfaction at the end. It just sucks because it feels like you had a very great story building up to the moment the Ellie and Abby confrontation happens, but when it does it seems you just took a dump on the story. The game itself is beautiful I appreciate the gameplay and how it is a even though it’s very repetitive, it just sucks that when you get that climax it feels like you’re falling down Mount Everest with no chance of stopping until you hit the bottom. I doubt it will even happen but I feel like you need to pull a BioWare and fix the ending like they did for Mass Effect 3 even if it’s just an alternate ending like choosing to play as either Abby or Ellie at the climax. Or just don’t make us play as Abby, the villain, and let us play as Ellie and beat Abby.

This game just has some of the WORST story decisions I have ever seen. Now I know I’m missing a lot of key characters and moments but I’m covering the standout moments. Let’s start from the beginning. The whole game is fine up until you start playing as Abby, a brand new character we have never seen before. It’s only for about 40 mins in the first 3 hours of the game but still. Then around that 2-3 mark you see that Abby and her crew kill Joel. This is the worst part of the entire game. To kill off a character in that type of way with that lazy of writing is pathetic. After Ellie witnesses this, she goes of to Seattle. For the next 10 hours you go on a journey to hunt down each person that was involved in the murder of Joel. I really enjoyed this part of the game, and it is by far my favorite part of the entire game. Once Ellie kills two of the remaining people that were involved with Joel, she heads back to the theater which she is staying. When she gets there with Tommy, Dina and Jesse are waiting there. Jesse and Ellie talk and then Abby enters the building and kills Jessie and badly hurts Tommy. This is another stupid part of this game. Ellie could have killed Abby right then and there but no, the story has to go on, that’s something that doesn’t stop in this game. So then we play as Abby for next 10 hours of the game and witness her side and why she wanted to kill Joel. I’m not even going to talk about this part. This was not the Last of us. It was like a DLC. After we play as Abby we beat the **** out of Ellie for no reason and just leave. Months have passed and Ellie has a family with Dina. Tommy shows up and tells Ellie where Abby is. She goes after her only to not ****ing kill her. Ellie spends this ENTIRE GAME killing ****ing everything just to not kill Abby???? Like why? Basically the ending is that Ellie returns home and Dinas gone. She lost two fingers in the fight with Abby and now can’t play the guitar, the only thing left that Joel could pass on. That’s it. The end. So Abby wins and Ellie lost. Now the flashbacks were ****ing amazing. Loved each one. The gameplay and the visuals were truly amazing. To sum it up, gameplay 10/10. Visuals 10/10. Story 3/10. It’s not as bad as people say it but the story really drags it down like A LOT. Finial rating for The Last of Us Part II is a 5/10. Expand

The improved combat system and level design made the game immersive and responsive to the players actions. The amount of detail that was in the levels were one of the most detailed I have seen in some time especially within this current generation of games. The physics of the foliage overgrowing on buildings to blood trails in the snow made the players character feel more attached to the environment like reality to provide that immersive experience along with the detailed special sound incorporated within it. Another great part to highlight is the combat system and how that incorporates itself within the games levels, this made the players experience feel more unique as your finishers sometimes incorporated smashing enemies through windows or using objects within close proximity to finish them off utilising the environment and surroundings effectively.

Now I've got the positives out of the way here are some of the negatives in which I think had impacted the game a lot and have caused me to give the score I have given. Having one of the main protagonists die by one of the players characters made an intense and powerful story but unfortunately the execution of the killers character felt forced upon and that majority of the story with Abby feels as though Naughty Dog are trying to push you for sympathy of her actions. Due to a large portion of the game is played by her it kind of takes away what the whole story should have been about. From what I can see it looks as though many changes were made throughout the development which then caused the game to feel rushed in some parts which is quite disappointing as there was great potential there.

Overall, it’s not a bad game but don't go in there playing it with high expectations as you may be disappointed.

But who has set up TLoU part 2, has ever played the first? I don't say in writing, I wonder, did Druckmann start from the TLoU script or from the 2013 TLoU final game? Because I have the impression that Druckmann did not play it
the game of 2013, let alone Part 2.
As a videogame player I feel fooled.
The game is written with such superficial content and pretexts that I wondered throughout the game: Ok but when does the plot start to mesh?
When does this stupid paradoxical comedy end?
Did Druckmann take into account that the players think while they play and know after 2 hours that he is throwing on the fire badly explained and intentionally incomplete events to keep this clown standing up?
The player knows very well what Joel rightly leads to making the final choice, and he knows equally well that Druckmann omits in all this initial reconstruction the Terrorist behavior of the fireflies towards Joel.
They created Part 2 of a very different story, where Marlene (Ellie's adopted mother) totally comes from the girl.
The player realizes that the whole part played with Abby is exposed to make her put on the same level as Ellie, but at the same time the player sees the events that are totally exposed in the opposite way, Abby always kills in cold blood, would kill everyone at the Cabin and even at the theater, only Owen and Lev prevent her from doing so.
Ellie instead always tries to get to Abby looking for information, but the enemies always react by attacking her instead of indulging her.
Anyone realizes that this way of writing is not inspired at all, but is simply ridiculous.
Reflection: many already speak of TLoU part 3 and wonder what it could be, now that this useless Part 2 has badly consumed the whole cast.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am with the party that heavily disliked the direction and execution the writers decided on for TLOU2 at the start of the game (I did spoil myself). However, as I played through the game there were points where we could get a sense of what the writers wanted to achieve by creating a dual narrative with moral ambiguities between Ellie and Abby, such that in certain perspectives you can see their actions as justified - righteous even. However, their execution on this matter was criminally poor.

Before I delve deeper into the story and characters I do want to say that the gameplay, sound design, and graphics were fantastic. Each melee attack had its distinctive weight depending on the make-shift weapon used, the enemy AI was intelligent and fair and the level design as a whole was done well. The ambience of each environment was distinctive and the infected noise and enemy callouts were pivotal in allowing a 3-D in one's mind. The sharpness of the textures, quality of shadows, each movement of the character models were slick and smooth. Nothing was revolutionary in these departments per se but their quality was of the highest level that one would expect for a triple AAA game, no less a Naughty Dog title.

The most controversial part of TLOU2 was the brutal death of Joel very early on in the game and this is where all of the inconsistencies and perplexities stemmed from. First off, it feels weird that Abby would seek her revenge on Joel the moment he and his brother saved her from the infected, even considering the hatred she has for him for killing her father about 5 years prior.
But then why would she brutally beat Joel? From the gameplay we play as Abby later on she doesn't feel like a person that would have so much pent-up rage. Moreover, why keep Ellie and Tommy alive? Abby and Co. can't seriously believe that those two wouldn't want to get their own revenge, especially for how brutally Joel was killed. I reiterate the fact that Joel was brutally killed because none of us wanted Joel to die that way, we wanted a heroic death if anything (on a side note the brutality of Joel's does set a good tone for the type of gore we would expect later on). However, what some of us might have forgotten or neglected to realise, that the game does explore through Ellie and Abby is that Joel's action at the end of TLOU was monstrous. He effectively sacrificed the lives of many for his surrogate daughter. This is a point that the game wants us to have when balancing the moral ambiguities between Ellie and Abby, but again throughout the game, we get introduced to groups of people like the Seraphites and slave traders, undermining Joel's decision.
So then what, surely it would be better to save what loved ones you have in a world where only a small proportion of the people left are actually worth saving.

I could go on but this contentious point on Joel's death was what I wanted to focus on. Overall, TLOU2 had great potential, I applaud the writers at least for their gall to create something like this but unfortunately, they miserably missed their mark.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
