The review of the game that follows will include minor spoilers that will not ruin your game experience because I will not discuss the story plot or anything in detail.

The first thing bothered me was that the game had somehow a lazy introduction. I expected to be sucked in the game within few minutes just like I was when I played the first game. With the Part II that did not happen at all. The game starts with lazy (some cheesy too) dialogs and the main characters (Joel and Ellie) felt surprisingly dead somehow.

Within the first two hours of the game the story makes a sudden, very rush jump and I felt a bit shocked and had a lot of question marks in my head. Now, I am not one of those fans that can only accept the story with the happily-ever-after ending. I am fine with anything, the good or the bad, it does not matter how disgusting it is IF it serves the good and high quality story.

I honestly hoped for the next twenty hours to get to see the justification for the terrible event from the beginning of the game but I did not get it. Very soon I realised that Naughty Dog threw some lies and few truths through the marketing and trailers for this game.

The truth is that this game is indeed about the hate and revenge, an infinite circles of revenge by the few main characters and it tries to make players question what and who is good and who or what is bad. The only problem is that this game does it in a really cheap way. Part II also introduces not deeply developed new forgettable characters and some of those were kind of supposed to put a big shadow on the main characters that were represented as positive in the first game. Developers tried to do it by showing you the story (that has so many holes, way too many) from different perspectives (Ellie is not the only playable character). Generally, I do not have anything against that idea because if we look at Joel and his acts at the end of the first game, he is not really the bad guy but he certainly is not the good guy and a moral example either. I actually expected to see more about Joel in the Part II, especially about his life between the day of his daughter's death and the day when he met Ellie for the first time. I always thought that these twenty years of Joel's life could reveal something that will indeed make me question what is good and what is evil (even though I always saw Joel as a positive character despite everything). However, in the Part II there was nothing about that.

I am not quite sure what Naughty Dog wanted to do with this story. They basically turned everything upside down and put me in a situation to do stuff in the game that I really did not want to. As if the only goal was to make a player feel terrible. They succeeded at the end, the only thing is that I felt terrible because this was not the quality of the story that I have seen in the first game. It is far from it.

The reason why it was hard for me to get an opinion about this game is the fact that there are things in it that I enjoyed very much. The game looks fantastic. Wherever you go walking and exploring everything looks so good until the last detail. The landscapes, areas, sounds, colours…

The exploration parts in the game are now giving something like a semi-open world feel. Similar to the Uncharted: Lost Legacy that has one big area that you can explore by a car but in this game those areas are much bigger. For example, there is a part of Seattle where you can really spend two, three hours exploring, checking buildings for supplies and find stories about people that used to live there. If you are not up to such things you can avoid it all and proceed to the next area but you might probably miss some hidden weapons and such stuff. The game offers some sort of puzzles here and there but they are too simple and obvious.

The gameplay is basically the same as it is in the first game. There are some new weapons to use and craft. There are also few new types of enemies and some of those are not naive at all.

Speaking of enemies and combat, Part II does it significantly better than the first game. Infected are scarier and human enemy AI is much, much better. If you play on harder modes enemies can be really tricky. They hear you better and they really seek for you. Once they spot you can try to hide but not for long because they will seek for you even in the grass or under the cars. Enemies generally communicate with each other and they will often call names of their friends to check on them or scream when their friend has been shot. This makes enemy AI probably the best I have seen, especially on harder modes.

It is also worth mentioning that this is the most accessible game I have ever seen. It has a big optional menu where you can set almost every aspect of a gameplay. It even has options for people with damaged hearing or sight.

So, can good graphic, visual design, animations and gameplay save a game with a thin story?

    Hardly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What happened? Let me start by saying that by no means is this a 0/10 game. The gameplay, voice acting, atmosphere/world, sound, soundtrack and graphics are fantastic. It’s what holds this game somewhat up. The real problem with this game is the story. TLOU 1 had an amazing story. It is what ND is known for. But this game falls flat. It’s like they forgot what they had created from the first one. I get what they were trying to do. In a world like this no one is truly good nor evil, many of the people we see from our side of the story as the bad guys are the same as us, humans who have done terrible things to survive. They’re “bad” people but technically so is Joel. They just executed it SO bad. The problem is not that they killed Joel, but the way they did it. 2 hours into the game and they kill a beloved main character to a person that we have no idea who is. Then they try to redeem it by showing Abby’s backstory in what feels like 10 minutes and then expects us to feel
for her. Also Ellie has killed maybe 100s of bad guys, but those who killed Joel are the ones she feel bad about killing? Joel has been through so much **** and didn’t trust anybody, but trusted Abby enough to walk into a house full of her group and then using his real name, even though he KNOWS a lot of people hate him for what he did to the Fireflies? I really do see what ND were trying to do, but they did it in a horrible way.. And it hurts even more knowing you have waited 5 years for this sequel.

I'm gonna try to make this the most unbiased review of the game: first of all, this game doesnt deserve a 0/0 , and surely it doesnt deserve a 10/10.

Let me start with the bad side of the game, this game story is not bad per se, but the events in the game might be in a different chronological order than it should be, say for example, when a beloved character is in big trouble, you get to play a little with the character that creates the big trouble to the beloved character, and in that moment you have NO idea what the deal is or what the story behind all of this is, this is where, by placing some background story before the facts can help the storytelling be more justified.

Theres also the fact that some characters act out of character, Joel is more trustful, even though he's a hated man and he knows it, Tommy is reckless and impulsive, Ellie forgets how to be a warrior, gets nerfed of her strength (both mentally, like phisically), and the new characters, had so much potential to be more close to the player, but failed to achieve the connection to us.

Ok lets talk about the AI, your AI partner at times, is just useless, let me put it this way, they might as well were totally gone from the scenery and it would'nt matter, sometimes they can save you from enemy grabs, and sometimes (only sometimes), they execute a second enemy while you are executing the first one, but that's it, zombies forget they exist, you're on your own, basically.

The Controls, yup, i thought my controller was faulty, but no, you want to run? nope, you can't do it in this exact place, you want to jump? nope!... The back and forth controlling system this game has is pretty confusing, allowing us to run when the game wants us to, and jump too. This makes the pacing of the game way slower than it should be.

The last bad thing to me, are the open spaces with no use whatsoever: Have you ever been in a game scenary and you want to explore it, maybe there is something hidden in this corner or in this room, but no, there's nothing there most of the times, it's just an empty room, yeah, i know, it's a post-apocalyptic world, but hey, then don't create rooms for nothing, just close the door or something right? This point it's just my humble opinion, 'cause i haven't read about it anywhere else.

---Ok, now let me talk about the good things!

Graphics, awesome, the grass for example, was revolutionary to me, the treatment to the snow, every danm footstep was there, i know this might seem like no big deal, but the way we interact with the world is what gets us inside of it, yeah, the graphics are also a piece of art, everything was on point, there was one part in the game where i found an electric fan, which matched every single detail of one that i had in that room at that moment, that **** blew my mind.

Yeah, some facial expressions were all distorted, but even the slightest movement of an eyebrow, got the message across.

The gameplay was so good, i loved it, i loved how you could walk in crouch mode at the speed you wanted, literally, super slow, ultra slow, kind of slow, etc... I L-O-V-E-D I-T. I have to admit it was kind of awkward how the "Silent Executions" made so much noice, and how the hand to hand fighting parts had a weird camera angle everytime, but past that, i loved it, it was all about the reflexes and calmness of the player to succeed in a fight. I love to depend on hability and agility instead of button mashing.

It was nice having new mechanics in the game, i loved the parts where you had to run through obstacles and all, it was so thrilling.

in conclusion: i dont hate this game, i was rooting for it, i wanted it to succeed like the last one, but even the ending got me mad out of my chair, i really don't think the story is well thought out, but the game is just masterpiece material, you can't say the game is good, only because it plays good, it has to feel good to be great. End.

It was a good game but by no means perfect. A little too long which made it a bit boring to play at times but the story made up for it i think. The characters Ellie, Abby, Lev and Yara nice. The rest of the characters were kinda forgettable.

If the games story had been put in a more logical way maybe the story score would have been higher. As it is you only really get to know some

Amazing graphics and sound design though, i was really surprised that there wasnt a single stutter or fps-drop.

7/10 would not play again because its too long. Nice game tho!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ll start off by saying this game would be so much better if it was its own new, original game rather than a sequel to TLOU. TLOU sets high bars with beautiful storytelling that can be replayed over and over again and never get old, however TLOU2’s story was personally like torture. Certain parts were dragged out for no reason, certain scenes were added for seemingly no real purpose (like the sex scene, which it brief and is only spoken about once more after and then holds no real consequence) and it got hard to keep track of who was were, who was still alive, what time each event took place in, etc.

I loved TLOU because of Ellie and Joel. Their story was beautiful and heartbreaking and full of pain and danger as they survived in their living nightmare of a city. Their relationship was incredible to watch grow from to strangers trying to finish their job and get away from each other ASAP to a father/daughter love that we, the player, felt a part of. So when I heard of the sequel I knew Joel was likely going to die, but what I wasn’t expecting was how he died.

I think killing Joel off was a poor choice, at least this way. When I saw the teaser trailer showing Ellie playing the guitar and Joel coming in, I was under the impression she was out for vengeance, possibly over the murder of a dead lover and so she ran off to find her lover’s killer, to which Joel shows up partway through the game to help her despite his old age. I was expecting Joel to die towards the end (possibly by bite, making it even harder for Ellie since she’s immune), able to say his goodbyes to Ellie, with her obviously upset but thankful of the time they had together and they get a sweet farewell, similar to Telltale’s The Walking Dead season 1 finale, with the post credits showing that Ellie learned how to love again and started a family of her own. What we got was far from it. A few hours into the game Joel is murdered by bludgeoning by new characters. After seeing the teaser trailer I thought he’d survive, all I could think was “the trailer shows he’s alive, he has to live” as his kneecap is shot. I felt little emotion other than confusion as I watched him get beaten and eventually murdered. I honestly felt numb, and lied to. I felt the trailers tricked me, and from that point on it left a sour taste in my mouth for the rest of the game.

I didnt care at all for Abby. I did not care much for her reasoning, let alone to play through literal hours of her story that I hated. Naughty Dog tried to make me sympathise with her, to make her a hero, and I could care less for it. What makes it worse is that we get those hours of flashbacks within flashbacks right as Ellie and Abby meet again, with Jesse shot and Tommy at gunpoint. The only part I enjoyed about her story was Manny. I feel her reason for killing Joel would’ve been so much more powerful without the flashback and instead we get to see her and Ellie fight, with her declaring her reason for killing Joel was because he killed her dad. It could’ve been so tense and fit much better instead of the needlessly long flashbacks that made me lose all care for whatever happened next in the story.

Finally the ending. It’s revealed that Ellie and Dina have a son they’re raising and Tommy arrived with a lead of Abby, which the girls refuse to follow until Ellie decides to follow it, to which Dina for some reason says “I can’t do this again”. Throughout the game Ellie has killed so many people to get to Abby, she was worked her ass off to avenge Joel and finally has a chance to kill Abby and she doesn’t. She lets her live, and we are forced to watch as Abby escapes with the kid. Ellie later arrived home only to find everything gone, Dina has left with the baby and left Ellie’s stuff behind. The girl we watched grow as a person from TLOU1 until 2 has lost everything; Joel, Jesse, her home, her revenge on Abby, her fingers and then her family despite how hard she fought for it. She’s once again alone, leaving all her stuff behind to maybe explore the world and find a new home.

Finally, if you’re going to buy the game, get the physical version. I wish I could resell my game and get something out of it but I can’t since I got the digital version. I feel my €80 was wasted and would’ve rathered to just watch a play through. I feel it’s so poor because of the fact it’s a sequel, whereas again if this was its own new game it’s be incredible and maybe a 9/10 rather than the 6/10. Now I’m off to play TLOU and do my best to forget about TLOU2.

Those in between are people who are not blindly furious with the game or completely fanboying around it. The game is average, it kills that the best part of the game happens in the first quarter of the game and is a descent from there, with some ups being miles from those first 3 hours of the game and it doesn't help the best parts of the games after those spike the game hit in those 3 first hours are flashbacks with Joel. The gameplay itself would give this game a minimum score of 4. After those three hours, you start playing as Ellie hunting down the team that kills Joel and it looks like a common vengeance story, but about half the game Ellie starts to doubt her revenge after killing a member from the team who was pregnant and thinks it best to leave it behind and go back with the team, but she gets ambushed by Abby who kills one of the three likable new side characters and TA-DA ... Back to the start of the story and you start playing as Abby from the moment she killed Joel, and the game starts trying to make you feel some attachment to the characters YOU ALREADY KILLED as Ellie. You find out that Owen is another likable character but the fact you know he is going to die x days latter makes so hard to create a link to the character even tho he probably has a better development then the 2 main characters during his small screen time in this flashback Abby segment and the game would make a better job if it made you play as Abby first after killing Joel and starting care about those new characters and making killing then with the Ellie segment a harder thing to do/see. I will stop the review here. The game is not even close to the 0 to 4 I see here. But no way in hell and heaven its an 8+ game too, damn even a 7 is an stretch because those are for games that are almost there. All those critics reviews just dont want to lose those early review copies they get and give this game a high score for it. Expand

(SPOILERS + JUST MY OPINION) If Joel was just shot in the head with a pistol and not tortured to death i think this game would have been a lot better, its just asking a bit too much to sympathize with Abby after Joel saved her then she still goes on to commit such an act with no sign of hesitation. Its not like her fathers Death was still fresh in her mind either, surely 4 years of morning would have lessened her hatred to some extent, even Ellie showed mercy to Abby after killing people she love much more recently. If Abby was built up a bit more before she killed Joel the player might have had a better understanding of her situation but the start of the game felt like a speed run to kill the fans favorite Man. There is just no enjoyable element to this game and the flashbacks of Joel and Ellie just made me more miserable because you know those times are over forever . i dont even care that the gameplay was basically copy pasted. Sound, Ambient, Music is just top Perfect for The Last of Us.

The (HORRIBLY) Bad: The story, and this is BAD, its a narrative game, the story is the most important thing.
SPOILERS, Joel is killed by Abby, a new character, she is the daughter of one of the surgeons Joel killed in the first game, okay, she seeked revenge, but the writing of the story lets her do it so easy it's disrespectful to the character of Joel, he and his brother acted dumb before Joel's death, and Abby does it so early in the game, well thats the way the story starts, pretty **** but well, oh wait, the game forces you to play as her, and let her get everything she wants, oh she wants to beat Ellie and her girlfriend even though they are our favorite characters, and what's even worse, Ellie even when she nearly dies, killed all of Abby's friends and boyfriend, and encounters with a weaker Abby, she doesn't get her revenge, she doesn't kill Abby, Abby didn't even wanted to fight, and still got away, again Abby gets everything she wants despite us the player hating her for what she did to Joel, what an disappointing ending.

What they did to Joel and Ellie is just disrespectful to the character, how they changed them to a completely new and horrible character that is Abby.

It breaks my heart that I have to give this score to the sequel of one of my favorite games, If not my #1 favorite game.

Graphics are the best that the PS4 will ever see, and if this game makes it to PS5 it'll still be one of the best looking games. "Levels" are incredibly detailed. The lack of multiplayer currently sucks.

I won't go too into detail about that story. All I'll say is it wasn't for me. I see what they were going for but it was executed poorly. Every point I could make has already been made by multiple content creators and independent critics. While there are a minority of people hating on the game just to hate and because of it's inclusion, every negative review shouldn't be written off like they are. The ending made me feel like everything I did was pointless. There are legitimate reasons to dislike this game. There are plenty of reasons to like it.

The game is also structured poorly. Right when things are starting to happen when you've got past the rising action and you're about to get to the climax, you're sent right back to the beginning and get another 10-15 hours of exposition and rising action again that ultimately leads back to the climax you were about to see 15 hours ago. I feel like if this game was reordered to be more chronological, it would have been much more well-received.

Without getting into spoilers, Naughty Dogs' blatant false advertising of what this game would be cannot be excused. They could have handled the situation better, and more clearly represented what the game would be without spoiling it.

I didn't hate the game. I also didn't love it. Some of the outrage is ridiculous. The game isn't a 0/10, it's no 10/10 either. It's a brave sequel. Just not what most people would consider a "successful" one. Things that made the first game so great to a lot of people, like Joel and Ellie's relationship is put on the back burner in favor of a subpar revenge/forgiveness plot. There are obvious plot holes that shouldn't be overlooked or excused.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played the game on hard difficulty and this is what I thought. I am going to formulate this review with the good, the bad, and ugly and try to reveal all my true thought about the game.

    The Good
    - I liked Jesse and Manny as characters. They were both so kind and caring towards their friends and so wholesome I really thought I could relate to them. I was so sad watching both of them die because they were great comedic relief and supporting Characters.
    - The gameplay and the visuals are top notch. It is so satisfying to kill people and look at this world that if there was no story I would easily play this game 30 times over
    - I really enjoyed playing as Ellie more to Abby because I liked her more as a character and I enjoyed not being the strongest character physically but definitely emotionally. Also I loved how she used a switchblade it made everything more brutal and satisfying
    - The exploration in this game is good I am glad they opened the world a little more than the first one because I will admit the first game felt very linear for long times.
    - New puzzles were a nice touch as every fight with Ellie felt like a puzzle because you just were not that strong. Unlike Abby were you literally could just sadistically kill everyone with your fists.
    - The Flashbacks are amazing for both characters. Especially with Joel, because it gives us a more in depth look at his character during the past four years
    - The parallel between Owen and Abby, and Dina and Ellie is a nice touch. As Dina and Owen both try their hardest to help them forget about vengeance and just move on but neither one of them succeed.

    The Bad
    - Playing as Abby is very hard after you watch her brutally kill Joel our hero from the first game. She is also boring at times because she seems to show almost no emotion to anybody except for Lev and Yara, but even then it's hard to tell because she does not show it on her face. She only shows through her actions and that is almost always killing someone even her one people. I got very bored of it by Seattle Day 2, the only redeeming quality was the combat as it is fun at times. Also that hospital scene versus the giant monster is amazing and so freaking cool.
    - Mel is a very boring and flat character in my opinion. The only reason i care about her is because she is killed by Ellie and she is pregnant. It is very hard to watch and it really makes Ellie think "what if that was Dina." But besides that Mel is nothing really except just stupid for getting herself involved in this mess. She should have stayed home and just had the baby in my opinion.

    The Ugly
    - Joel's Death is hard to watch and it happens way to early in the game in my opinion. However, I get why they did it in the way they did. Watching it happen really wants to makes you want to just destroy Abby and make sure she dies the most brutal death possible. But sadly this revenge story is ruined by the fact that i have to play 10 hours as Abby and try to sympathize with her as a character.
-The ending. Oh where do I start with this because there is not even an ending in my opinion. What I loved about the first game is that it had a great ending and a sequel was not even necessary to make that story make sense. But after this I am leaving with more questions than answers and I wish that the game had cut the Abby play through except for the flashbacks and really try to flesh out a satisfying ending. Let me be clear after that had happened I did not want either character to die. Mainly because they just both need to move on and let it go to have closure. If one of them had died there would heave never have been closure and the other would still be struggling. I think it could have been done better though.
    - Where the hell is Dina!! At the end of the game Ellie goes back to the farm only to find everyone gone and no Dina. I just personally do not like this part of the ending as I do not see Dina giving up on her that quick after this story

    Final Verdict
The Last of Us part 2 is one hell of a game. It is definitely very unique, brutal, emotional, and above all dark. It is very hard to finish and play for a multitude of reasons. All in all I will give it a 7 because I enjoyed playing it and characters like Jesse and Manny made me smile many times throughout my playthrough. But the story was average and disappointing. Druckmann is an insane and very ambitious writer. I understand why he wrote the game this way but I do not agree with it. However, I still respect him as a writer and i truly believe he is still one of the best entertainment writers on the planet. The Last of us is an 11/10 in my opinion this game falls short as a sequel but I cannot say I did not enjoy playing. I just wish some parts were different and were not as long as they were. In the end, the last of us part 2 is a very controversial game to say the least and I will never forget playing it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us 2 is a game that well is quite confusing to review for me, the story is not the worst but it is meant to be the last of us 2, if it was a separate franchise it would be rated higher. the story is meant to be on par with the first game but it doesn't reach the bar. They even kill of Joel in the first HOUR of the game for what seems no real reason. I don't have a problem with him dying in the game, it's just that the way he did is something Joel wouldn't do.

the game is similar to the first game and doesn't innovate on anything 7 years later. most of the characters are bland and boring, nothing makes me want to care about abbey and her friends, it could have been done better but they just didn't do it. the only people I cared about were Joel, Ellie, Dina, Jesse and a little but Tommy. but then they kill Joel and Jesse, fake kill Tommy and do some dumb things with eille.

let's talk about the ending, it is the most unsatisfying thing I've ever seen in a game. in the end, you travel to California and are about to kill abbey then you have a flashback with Joel and then involuntary decide that even though they killed Joel, Jesse and made Tommy blind in one eye, you let her live. then she goes off into the sunset and lives happily ever after... I have never wanted more to break a disk, it's not like you can choose to kill her or not and it angers me. it took me 16 hours and 27 minutes to play this just to not kill the person the ridiculous revenge plot is based on. the game is not

this is not the worse game on earth like other people are saying buts it's not great either it could have been amazing but they decide to not but effort into making it.

Pros: graphics are pretty excellent, the animations are very good, and voice acting is good.
Cons: gameplay is boring and feels unrefined. Story seems rushed and characters seem unrealistic to the point you really stop caring about them, which wouldn't be much of an issue but the story seems to be the only reason to really play this title.
Overall: probably a good buy for $20 or so but

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll start off by saying I loved the first Last of Us. It's in my top 20 of games all time. The last of us part 2 however, was a struggle to get through. When it comes to the last of us it's all about the setting and the story. I debated whether to give this game a 4 or 5 and I decided on 5 in the end. It all comes down to how the characters were portrayed mostly. The gameplay is ok but not an improvement from the original. I don't agree with people giving it a 0 for the review simply because they dislike the story. I dislike it also, but you have to take into account the whole game. Visuals and Music were top notch which is where all my score went.

When it comes to the story it was utter garbage. Joel and Tommy don't act like themselves, Which leads to Joel's death. You're also forced to play as Abby, the character who murdered Joel. Abby's justification for killing him is a good one, however, it's been 7 years with Joel and Ellie. Playing and replaying that story and being attached to those characters. Being forced to play with a beloved characters murderer sucks. I couldn't relate to her at all because I was so pissed at her. I wont spoil everything but the ending leaves a lot to be desired. It is for sure a mixed bag that some people will like and some will hate. I'm in the latter. If you really loved the first last of us and the characters of that game I would avoid this game at all cost. Think of it like star wars. Originals were great, sequels not so much.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game as a whole is good. Much of the game is an improvement over the first one, such as combat, exploration, collectables and weapon customisation. The only thing I can fault about the game is the unnecessary sex scene towards the middle of the game but more importantly the story.
The story for this game is a mess, the clear progression with fantastic relationships between joel and ellie is what made the first game great but in part two the story is all over the place. You play as both ellie and abby, the latter being the antagonist of the game - which is a huge mistake in my opinion as the developers try to force you to care about her even tho I personally just wanted to kill her. The sections where you play as abby are extremely boring and I rushed them to get them over with. To finish it off the ending is a massive disappointment and the definition of an anti climax. However the game is still enjoyable.

However, the story reads like an unedited mess where the writer have interesting idea but the execution is absolutely terrible. While Abby has the potential to be a really interesting character they spend way too little time on both her backstory and giving her time to re-examine her own actions.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had been waiting for this game for 6 years and it finally came out. I had told all my friends and my family that I was going to be offline for a couple days playing the game. I played the game and was of course saddened that they killed off Joel. I had seen some of the leaks previously of Joel’s death but wanted to believe they were fake. I was in denial but finally once I saw for myself that they killed off a beloved character I thought I understood what naughty dog was doing. You play as Ellie for the first 15/20 hours which was fine, but then they switch you off to Abby. Abby is the main “villain” who killed Joel. I’m not sure who naughty dog thought would want to play as Someone who killed the character that you learned to love in the first game. It doesn’t make sense overall. I Believe you play as Abby for 6+ hours and even towards the end of the game you hunt down Ellie. This doesn’t make sense to me whatsoever. Why would you want to play as someone that hunts down a character you love. Also the main reason Abby wanted to kill Joel in the first place was because Joel killed Abbys dad, who was the surgeon In the first game. This may be confusing but basically in the first game the main surgeon at the end of the game who Joel kills was Abbys dad. Wowww such a good story continuation. Abbys dad was the one who wanted to “kill” Ellie and go through with the surgery in the first place. Marlene didn’t even want to “kill” Ellie, but Abbys dad thought it was such a good idea so that way they could try to get a vaccine, even though the world was already dead. Overall I don’t hate this game, I just hate that naughty dog would think that we would want to play as someone who killed Joel. Also I don’t understand why Ellie didn’t kill Abby at the end of the game either. She traveled all the way down to get Abby and found her and drowns her, but in the last second has a realization. Doesn’t make sense. Again I don’t hate the game itself and the graphics and gameplay is beautiful, I just don’t like parts to the story. Overall if you want to buy this game I wouldn’t recommend it if you get too attached. I personally stopped playing the game when you start playing as Abby. I feel as though her part is unnecessarily long and boring, which it didn’t have to be, but no one really cares about her. Sorry this is long but I just wanted to share my thoughts. Expand

I wanted to love this game, I really did but in the end, it's just not to the caliber Naughty Dog is best known for, when their presence makes other studios cringe to have follow up with at E3--PlayStation and Xbox alike--with the reputation they always set the new Gold-Standard not just on consoles but amazing PC fans and developers as well. But, as history has repeatedly shown, every empire must soon fall.

GRAPHICALLY give Naughty Dog a piece of hardware and they'll wow you, their artists and programmers are talented and know what they're doing and Naughty Dog should take pride in that. They know how to pull off some pretty tricky stuff and you can tell--like every title previous--Naughty Dog takes what they've learned from previous games and culminate it altogether for something spectacular. They're constantly learning and growing. Their animation team deserves a metal or a trophy, or a hug, or something because they always pull it off. But, The Last of Us Part II (TLoUII) just doesn't have that wow factor that blows you away unlike TLoU where you thought the PS3 had totally been maxed out only to find ND still had one final rabbit to pull out of their hat. This game is beautiful, but I thought of 'Until Dawn' a lot while playing this and really well lit areas seemed lazy with really washed out colors and you ask what happened? There's still a lot of pop in as well and some characters models just don't seem quite ND. Honestly, even though this game runs at 1440p, possibly 4K checkerboard, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End at 1080p still is more impressive.

SOUND is world class! Voice acting performances are stellar. The soundtrack opens, carries, and closes the game masterfully. The 'Eye for An Eye' track playing during encounters had me feeling like I was playing a John Carpenter movie with some Hans Zimmer. The OPTIONS MENU lets you tinker with sound settings to get he optimal experience, these guys--honestly--are the stars of this game. Ashley Johnson's performance of "A Poor Wayfairing Stranger" however--while brave and a valiant effort--would indicate she needs to stick to acting and not pursue a career in music, it wasn't horrific, but wasn't great. Sound department ultimately in the end wins this with a perfect 10.

GAMEPLAY is exactly what you'd expect, really. Its more of the same with a little hint of Uncharted. Crafting is a key part of this game and upgrading all of your weapons. It's all here. The supplements aspect of the game was weird this time though. Environments are much more spacious which is both to the benefit and detriment of the gameplay. When I play TLoU, I don't play it like Uncharted or Gears of War, it's not a run-and-gun game, it's Metal Gear Solid. It's stealth and carefully working your way around to quietly eliminate your enemies and get out or explore to find this games some 300 hidden items, the problem is, this game get's cheap in that department. I had to restart encounters over and over again to play the game the way it should be played because the AI would send two guys right after me from the get go and I'd get caught and have to run and hide or just start over. 5000 characters just isn't enough to fully cover gameplay but it's flawed this go around. The dog aspect is neat and trying to get through that but, in some ways it felt like I was playing Uncharted with wave after wave of enemies. Finally, the game, due to the story is really bloated, a 15-20 hour experience (I didn't time myself) but it was way too long. I'd say the ND team had been playing Devil May Cry 4 a lot while developing this game.

STORY. As most have said, can TLoU stand alone without Part II? Absolutely. It's just an expansion to the story of Ellie as an adult. You're not missing out on anything by not playing it. The story is really long though, you're bored at several long points during the game. I spent so much time running around areas as well trying to find items that it distracted me from the goal of what ND was trying to do and that was tell and impactful story but I had to collect items. I didn't have so much of an issue with one major plot point most gamers did, I think it was actually a good move in creating a new story to adventure through but I--personally--wasn't happy with ND's personal agenda this time through. Is the game divisive? Yeah, it is. It's a violent game but so was the first one, this shouldn't be a surprise. But the whole gay pride and pushing that agenda seemed pretty lame. At least in TLoU Bill's character was subtle, that was the way to do it right. There's just not enough characters to write a descent review for this. It's an okay game in the end, just not a ND masterpiece as previous games.

In my opinion the gameplay was fun the character interactions between Joel and Ellie in flashbacks and Dina and Ellie in real time were nice, however, the ending was depressing. It was depressing in a way leaving you with no closure. And of course, killing of the main character of the last game in a horrid way was hard to believe, and then having to play 8+ hours as the person who did it made the matters all worse. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After finishing the game, my feelings were mixed. The graphics are the best you’ll find on the PS4. This is seriously a great game to look at. The music is written by Gustavo Santaolalla who kills it once again for this game. In fact, some scenes ride purely on the graphics and music to illicit an emotional reactions and I found these scenes incredibly insulting. The gameplay is a solid B+ for me. I often would get frustrated when popping out of cover as the enemy was able to get a shot on me faster than I could Iine up an accurate shot on them. What I realized is that the game is trying to encourage frantic dashing around the map. I would be most successful when I popped off a headshot from stealth and then quickly relocated myself to avoid the onslaught of enemies moving in on my location. I think this works well enough but I wish the game had a little bit stronger aim assist by default. Now onto the story. I don’t want to go too in depth here so all I’ll say is that this game is filled with situations that feel so unbelievable and forced. The story as a whole is both unappealing and unrealistic given the context of the first game. And 10 hours are spent playing as the antagonist, trying to earn sympathy from the player for this character. This falls completely flat and what you’re left with is hours of pushing yourself through the story just to get back to the characters you actually care about. Overall I don’t think that this is the sequel that the first game deserved, and I’m looking forward to doing another play through of that first game to cleanse my palate. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I first heard people weren't going to like the game, I was nervous about how it would affect me when I experience the game for the first time. I didn't want anyone to die, but Joel did. But is it a bad game? No. Is it a masterpiece? No. This game has flaws, which made me not care about the story. The most fun I had with the game is when I had to get the boat as Abby with my "friend" strangely enough, that kid reminds me of Atreus from the god of war(btw a masterpiece), I enjoyed that mission because of the crazy **** that is happening all around the character, but that's beside the point. Graphics are always good, its naughty dog ofc. The control feels unresponsive from time to time. The combat is the strong point of the game. The way enemies react when their friends die, and they call out their names in anger and sadness, this made me wonder how they would improve from this? The gore is realistic to the point that I stop and sometimes see the enemies' heads on how it was impacted by a bullet. Also, the environment is always breathtaking; I like how detailed every house looks on how they were run down and in ruins, I thought that was cool. In the end, This with death stranding might go down as one of the polar games in recent history; I enjoyed the game just like how I do with a Mario game, don't care about the story, and focus all on gameplay. I give this game a 7/10

There are plenty of popular games that make me want to just rush trough the game without thoroughly exploring it, but not this one. It made me want to explore every corner of it and I still missed so much. The game does a very good job of making you feel like you truly are in a post-apocalyptic world with its destroyed environment literally collapsing under your feet, ghost towns, constant fear of getting jumped at, nature taking back what humans took from it and the limited resources that force you to make your every shot count. The reason this is not 10/10 Is because the story left me with a big question mark after finishing it. It started tragically, ended unexplained and not satisfyingly enough. It just felt like all the bonds I had with the first game were spat at and left dead on the ground (you know the reference). Expand

Game mechanics introduced in the sequel improve the gameplay loop and the combat animations look fantastic and provide a variety of interactions when combating enemies. Environments look beautiful, best that Naughty Dog has ever produced.

Now, with regards to the story, Naughty Dog introduces multiple themes and ideas in Part II, but fails to truly flesh them out in an emotionally and rationally satisfying way. The same can be said for the characters, both new and old, with characters having little development and rarely with any payoff, with many characters' story lines abruptly ending with little fanfare. By the end of Part II, both the player and the characters are in such a low point both physically and emotionally that you come out of the experience wondering what the point of it all was? Unfortunately, The Last of us Part II's response to that question is such an unsatisfactory, weak, and vague answer, that it ultimately leaves a bitter taste in the player's mouth to the whole Last of Us Part II experience.

but what makes the game good is game play graphic world design and development now my decision is that the story is fluent and beautiful at first
it also has a start that draws you in. obviously it is played for 3 hours in a row at first without ever leaving the game
but when you get in the middle of the game you can start to get bored slowly
but when you get to the end you are begging for the game to end, especially when you play the memories of Abby you are getting cold from the game.
and we came to the final, I think it was the worst and the most disgusting end compared to the game history
Even if a person wanted the end of a game, it wouldn't end so badly
In short, my comment is that the beginning of the game is perfect, the middle is meh, the end is disgusting
If you are going to buy the game, I can recommend it to you for game play and for the pleasure felt when you hit that npc. but the decision to take for the story is up to you

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I get why this game is getting hate. I don’t think it is deserved (except for the parts where you play as Abby). I personally liked the game, the thing that felt off was the tonal shift. It happened so suddenly that it caught me off guard. One second you are a agile badass killing clickers left and right, then the next you are a refrigerator playing fetch with a dog. The ending wasn’t something that I expected to be so hollow. I was left with an unfulfilled feeling in the pit of my stomach. It felt like my 20+ hours of gameplay amounted to nothing, but after a while it made since( even though it was pretty stupid). My take on the ending was that Ellie wanted to end the cycle of violence by not killing Abby(which was stupid). Anyways Ellie ended the violence by mowing down hordes of people only to not kill the person who killed her father figure and her best friend. The person who stripped Ellie of almost everything/one she had know. Even upon Ellie’s return to her home, she is stripped of her family and 2 fingers. All in all the revenge Plot didn’t really work for a game like the last of us. I applaud Neil and his team at Naughty dog for creating a unique experience in tlou2 but it is impossible to follow up a masterpiece. I still loved playing this game I just think that they needed someone on staff to think of pacing and placing, because it was a bit of a mess. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game does a great job in technical aspects like graphics and animations but was mediocre in game play mechanics like melee and ranged combat. The auto-aim was not very good, since it was not always locking the aim on the target. There was also no target locking for the melee combat, which can cause a problem when u dodge the enemy attacks. Mostly i lost the enemy in my sight, when i dodged their attacks. The AI was ok. But the story was terrible in every aspect. The game was boring maybe half of the game play time, since the story is terrible and a couple of times makes no progress for 3-4 hours. You just loot and fight the enemies. The main goal of this game is story telling. But the main story is not good/interesting. There are also some ridiculous parts in the story. Most annoying one is that Abby was helping 2 newly met Scars children and by doing this she was taking on her faction. The game could be one of the best games ever, if the story was a good one. But now it is just a okay game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has crazy good lighting, the graphics are astounding, and the music is so good. This is truly next gen stuff here. However the writing could use some work; the flashbacks are really good though it truly has the spirit of the first game. Now everything that happens in the present is not as good. You can tell early on in the game where it just doesn't sound normal like it's forced in a way. Also some of the characters just do some stuff that isn't in there nature. They try so hard for you to sympathize with Abby, but it's hard to. I know that Naughty Dog can write incredible stories, and I think that's one of the main reasons it got so much hate. Now I wouldn't call it a bad game because it isn't. I also wouldn't call it the best game it's an average game. If it wasn't for the visual, and music part of the game then it would have flopped for sure. Also it's not the actors fault, so stop attacks them. They did the best with what they had. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its surprising that a game with 10/10 graphics and a 9/10 soundtrack and decent gameplay could only receive a 6/10, but thats where I would rate TLoU2 due to its story.

For some context, the previous entry TLoU1 was a story set in a dystopian/miserable world that had a story fundamentally about love.. and hope. With all the tragedy that they underwent, it was the juxtaposition of hope and Joel/Ellie's story that carried you through the game.

TLoU2 was a story set in a dystopian world about love and hate/revenge, (At least on Ellie's story). Without the aspect of hope, and given the context of the story... unfortunately there was very little redeeming about this game in terms of story. You had a miserable world and a miserable revenge plot. This was the authors intent and the author succeeded in this mission. Yes, there were some other intentions such as exploring the concept of revenge and forgiveness, but this was felt as secondary to the prime directive to make you miserable.

I think the authors of the story looked it on paper and perhaps in the context of film and thought it would be an artistic masterpiece, because the story on paper seems beautifully woven and with intricacies and nuance to its themes that if explored differently might have been enjoyable. But in the context of a video game it simply didnt work. The miserable, hopeless story detracted from what could have been a game with similar global appeal as the original. The CHOICE of hopelessness is something I cannot understand for a video game. A video game is 25-40 hours long, not 2 hours long. It is NOT the same as a movie. Hopelessness for 25-40 hours is an ill-informed decision, especially escalating hopelessness.

Expanding on this point, in most video games, EG survival horror games like (Resident Evil, Dead Space, Wolfenstein, the Evil Within, Silent Hill, etc), you are enduring hopelessness but at a third wall level you know you are the protagonist and you think that you will come out okay in the end. The brutal murder of Joel in the beginning of TLoU2 eradicates any semblance that this is the case. You are enduring actual hopelessness for 25-50 hours. I felt this game was basically the equivalent if as Christopher Nolan decided to make Dunkirk 30 hours long as an artistic vision. This kind of experience is not designed to be 30 hours long and any reasonable person should know that the game needed hope to make it endure, (like as was contained in the first game). Its was as if Neil doesnt actually play video games so he doesnt understand that this is not a movie and how his vision would actually translate into a game.

Expanding further, playing Abby was ultimately repugnant and unenjoyable. This is not toxic masculinity or bias, this is the general consensus and it is strongly correlated with being a "gamer", IE, whether you adored the first game. The character that brutally murdered Joel because her father refused to not murder his (basically), adoptive child is not an ethical grey. Despite condemning the world, western societies are not the collectivist societies of Russia/China, etc. Western societies are individualist societies that value the individual human life. For not even CONSULTING with Joel he has the western moral right, and Abby was in a typical moral wrong, (from the western societal level). Despite any potential redemption path for her, the decision to make you play as her is repugnant from the perspective from any member of a society that values classical liberalism and individualism.

Finally, and a point of contract. Here is my proposal for how the story SHOULD have gone, but why they didnt because current year is 2020. I actually agree that Joel's death could be fitting and even poetic, but not the way he did. If Joel has to die, imagine that they give you the game with him and he dies at the end. The story gives you the whole game to process that BEFORE hand with hints (through context of the story and the situation they are in), that he might die. At least throughout the entire game there is the HOPE that it will turn out okay. Imagine that they come for Joel and murder dozens of people and threaten the town but dont get Joel. Joel and Elly head out and explore the revenge and all the themes the same way. And by the end of it, some sort of conflict/hostage situation has to occur, and right when they are at the finish line, Joel decides to sacrifices himself for Ellie as HIS decision, and somehow throughout the course of the game or at the end he can deliver the same message that the end of this game had, to live her life and not get revenge. This is the story that makes sense, but it was the story that they couldnt tell because they wanted to tell a more progressive story. There is nothing wrong with progressive messages, I think its great to give hope to marginalised groups. But this game decided to decapitate the obvious, beautiful, poetic story.. for a progressive story that didnt make sense.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. * Graphically speaking it is stunning. The attention to detail is impressive.
    * Gameplay very similar to the previous inception, with some added twists to keep from feeling too old hat. Being able to go prone (what's with that annoying thrumming noise) and jumping are welcome additions - although the jump mechanic needed more attention. There were too many instances where a missed jump came down to requiring that you stand on a very precise spot (with no indication otherwise).
    * The AI should have been tweaked to a more challenging standard. Examples of the weak AI: 1. Ellie could lay prone in grass and literally wipe out an entire squad of bad guys using the grab and stab technique. 2. Ellie could stab a Clicker and kill via a stealth takedown, but she couldn't stab kill them otherwise. 3. AI characters would call out the discovery of a dead comrad, then go back into a patrolling path loop within seconds of alerting the rest of the enemy. 4. Clickers need multiple shots with most weapons, even to what would be described as the head area, but a single normal arrow to the same area would take 'em out.
    * Pet peeve: Being able to detect enemies on the other side of the walls was routinely nullified, for the sake of a horror movie style jump-out-of-nowhere suprise element. Multiple checks of an area that would indicate no enemies present, only to be attacked as soon as you entered the room - which would then be filled with the enemy. Why give the player the ability to detect enemies if you repeatedly discount it for some cheap scare tactic?
    * Story was engaging, with periodic flashbacks to fill in the backstory elements and paint a broader picture of the major characters. It dealt with a quite the range of emotions and attitudes, fairly consistently well done. I felt that the second half could have put more time into the father-daughter relationship, which would likely have endeared me more to Abby's pain of loss. Also, Ellie's abrupt end to her life on the farm felt far too rushed.
    * Crafting didn't hold a lot of surprises, although the proximity charges were a nice addition.
    * The progression system was quite well done, proving players with a fairly expansive list of skills that could be improved upon. One of the few areas where it felt you were able to evolve the character's abilities to your own liking.
On a more personal note: I get that a lot of people wanted a repeat of the first game, with more of the same Joel and Ellie elements. This game was primarily about Ellie and her obessesion with revenge. And it was about Abby, who also was obessed with the same desires, under similar circumstances. There's always two sides to any story, and I felt the writers did a decent job of potraying that this game world.

the first 7 hours of the game I thought people were overreacting about this game and that it might actually be better then the first one. but by the end of it not only was I DEAD WRONG but I felt as if I just wasted 30 hours of my life.

Absolutely the worst follow up. What were these people thinking. Do not buy!!! This website is blocking 0 and 1 star reviews on purpose. Bloody politics. Even though it's 5 it's a big fat ZERO!!!

Ironically the Story is the weakest point of the game. It starts out compelling enough but the decline is steep and steady right until the ending which is criminally unsatisfying. I don´t care about any of the new characters and none of them even come close to Joel and Ellie from the first part.
The game looks amazing and the gameplay is actually very fun. I enjoyed exploring the vast areas of the game, collecting resources, crafting and modding my weapons. The changes to the combat system are minor but sensible. The battles are tense, action packed and brutal.
The Last of Us Part II is not a bad game. I enjoyed playing it and even though the story, the supposed heart and soul of the game, was a sad caricature of the original, I still finished it within a few days and couldn´t lay off the controller. So I can´t honestly rate this game too badly.

If you´re new to the series or don´t really care about it you´re going to have a good time with it, just wait until it´s on sale. But if you´re like me and you love the first game, Part II will leave you with an overwhelming feeling of disappointment.
I don´t think I will ever replay this game.

Good game with bad narrative building, some blind boring spaces and forced to be longer than it should be... And the end is questionable, also it makes everything looks pointless. I would give it 7.5/10 Like I enjoyed it, but with some regards. :D In my eyes, it was worth buying. ^^ :D

This game is extremely disgusting, look at all the spamming positive reviews from bots, and they are now deleting negative reviews because Sony warned them doing it. Do not buy it, otherwise you are probably going to vomit all over your places. Worst game ever!!

Do I wish the story had been told differently? For some parts, yes. Joel is, and will always be, my favourite to control.

Playing as Abby allowed us to get another POV, which was needed. We saw the reason they acted as they did, and their motivation. It gave depth to what could have been a one dimensional villain.

I enjoyed my play through, and yes there are issues at times with the story telling, it was still a solid game.

Extremely unsatisfying ending, and they force you to play HALF of the game as Abby a character I hated throughout all of the game, and at the end when we were finally supposed to kill her ellie **** let's her go. While the story is kinda weak what saves it from is definently is the gameplay, a major improvement of the first and I had fun throughout all of the game. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
