This is one of those games where a sequel should not exist. Yet, it's here. The trailer for this game pointed a story in a completely different direction, should I say misleading? So, how should I rate this game? What is this game even about?

It is a game where gamers are more interested in the story rather than the gameplay itself although the two are pretty close. Yes, the graphics and combat are high up there, but that is to be EXPECTED since it's a sequel. What needs to match up is the story! And that is where it falls apart.

I do not care about the situation behind the writing of this game, what they presented is all that matters. And what's presented is garbage. It is a story of duality, one where Ellie is on a supposed downtrodden revenge quest while Abby learns to sympathize others(??). Some critics say that Ellie's quest hurt those around her YET, her friends are the ones that THEY THEMSELVES go with her. Abby's companions are persuaded by Abby herself...

Imagine seeing a revenge story UNFULFILLED. It's like watching John Wick not killing the last person or something. Also, a game with flashbacks within flashbacks is not a good story. Ending the game with a flashback is not a good story.

I'm a fan of the Resident Evil saga and a friend told me about the acclaimed The Last of Us.
This 2020 was the first time I sat down to play it and I swear on my life that never before has a video game got as much into my psychology as the 2013 game did (the first part).
I never analyzed as much and entered a story as in that game, without less than appreciating the great games in history, I think I stumbled upon the one that surpasses all.
I am not going to develop something that everyone already knows, it is brilliant.
With that expectation I waited for the second and I did not spoil myself of anything (serious error).
Had I known they would spit in the faces of lovers of the former, I would never have bought this insult to such a masterpiece.
I am not bothered by Ellie's homosexual relationship (what's more, I think he makes a beautiful couple with Dina), I am not affected at all by the Trans character of Lev, nor the constant grievances towards the figure of "man" itself. What did destroy me psychologically (I had to lend the PS4 because I hated controlling a sadistic assassin) was the horrible narrative and its disastrous ending.
I can't believe the thousands of mistakes they made in creating this. Not even Star Wars or Terminator Dark Fate left me with a pain in my heart and mind as broken as you are.
They lost a fan and emotionally damaged me. Until always Naughty Dog. You died for me the same way you killed Joel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fair warning I created an account specifically to review this game,

    Pros:

1.Beautiful game graphically, truly amazing and a nice end to this console generation

    2.Beautiful soundtrack and ambience

3.Fantastic Mo-cap and voice acting, as to be expected give the actors and ND's previous games

4.I really do love a game that respects the power of a firearm even if combat aiming is a little jank

    Cons:

1.This is a story driven game that is awfully paced and a slog to get through

2.The combat/stealth loops in this game are extremely repetitive and after 7 years does not feel like its evolved enough beyond a go prone option.

3.I can't help but feel Druckmann believes he's created a masterpiece, akin to a Cormack McCarthy novel or Coen Bros movie. The theme is nihilism but the thing that made the first game so good was the levity and moments of hope that kept Joel going. None of that exists here its all gloom

4.Deceptive marketing of the game, Joel's character models have changed from the marketing images used, you can also in fact slaughterer dogs despite press releases claiming otherwise.

5.Horrific abuse of the DMCA laws to strike anyone and everyone who discussed the games leaks

6.Abby as a character was not humanised at all well before her introduction to other major characters, her character model also looks ridiculous, she is twice the size of half the men in the game, this is an apocalypse, where is she finding the supplements to maintain this figure?

You feel no attachment to any newly introduced characters in this entire game they are all 2D and unlikable and/or die before you get a chance. I feel like had they marketed this game from the start as Abby and Lev, humanised them for hours, dropped hints about her father along the way, then met Joel and have him meet his end with a bit more dignity, not have him and Tommy blurt out intimate details completely out of character it would be far more forgivable.

I really don’t like that Joel died but I understand why he did die like if someone killed my dad in a post-apocalyptic world I would want to avenge him but a lot of people don’t like how he died neither do I but it’s a gruesome world now since there’s zombies roaming around everyone’s not going to die a heroic death. Also everyone is saying Joel would never let his guard down like that in the first one but he was just getting chased by a heard of zombies what else are you going to do. Anyways here’s my opinion on this game I really liked the first half getting to get play as Ellie and chase after Joel’s killer Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just finished the Game.. i think its a beautifull game, scenery and characters are rich.
but i do tend to to agree with some other players, the stroy its not that good.. Joel did diserver better and jesse too.. ellie has gone throw too much suffering, why oo why .. make her go throw more on the last two chapters.. the game should have focused on forgiveness as the base for the last part, althought it really shows what happens when revenge is everything for you, and you end up lossing everything for such a stupid thing.. and the last scene with joel doesnt really make sense.. I liked most of the game.. and abby also diserved a better ending, if a DLC is coming i am willing to try it out.. but i would have bought this game on discount.. not full price..
its trying to hard to be a MASTERPIECE, and its not.. not even the shock value, some character we get to know are killed of like they didnt actually mattered.. i dunno i have mixed feelings with this game..
A MUST BUY WHEN ITS ON SALE.. NOT FULL PRICE...

Gameplay was fine, it didn't feel much different than the previous entry.
Story was all over the place and honestly just made me miss the first game. No new memorable Characters except Dina and Jeremy. Abby was unsympathetic and i didn't feel bad for her crew. The ending left me feeling like something was missing and i just wish we got to see tommy more. Overall its the weakest Naughty Dog

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. honestly Joel’s death didn’t surprise me. i knew from the 2016 trailer that’s Joel was in Ellie’s head and always thought that nothing could make her want revenge this badly if it wasn’t Joel getting killed in a horrible way. i didn’t get spoiled before the game, but i thought the first 50% of this game was perfect. seeing joel die so early just made me so angry and i felt like i was with ellie mourning him and just wanted to kill every last one of them. logically, his death makes sense. he killed a lot of people and i’d be more concerned if he didn’t get any repercussions for it. i was prepared for brutal and that’s what i got. the scene felt like it was acted perfectly and although joel didn’t get last words or anything that makes sense in this apocalyptic world - some things just don’t happen the fairytale way - as much as that **** sucks. and then we get to the 50% mark. i was so invested into ellie, jesse just died, it’s abby and ellie coming face to face and then boom - cut to black. then the realization that you have to play every seattle day over as abby???? i was floored. i did not care one second ab this **** and the game gave me flashbacks within flashbacks forcing me to care and it just didn’t happen. i wouldn’t have minded the scene where the player realizes the surgeon was abby’s dad, because that’s story development. i wouldn’t have even minded the scene where abby and lev meet and you see a little into that relationship for story development. but 10 **** hours??? i couldn’t. the ending - i get. i think ellie not killing abby wasn’t because she didn’t think joel wouldn’t have wanted her to. (because if abby had killed ellie, joel would’ve **** her up so fast). but i think ellie didn’t kill abby because she realized that lev would be affected the same way she was (ellie said “just take him” and not something like “just go and live”) and that ellie’s mental state would’ve decreased knowing she did the exact same things as abby - because ellie is a good person. and abby is not. abby spent years of her life waiting and planning to kill - torture - joel and took pleasure from it and was not affected in the slightest afterwards. when she knew dina was pregnant she looked pleased when she was about to kill her. **** psychopath. ellie was so blinded by her need for revenge that she did **** up things too - don’t get me wrong. when she tortured nora, she was visibly shaken afterwards because she’s still human. when she found out mel was pregnant after killing her she was physically sick and messed up because she’s still human - as one should be. but abby? that **** a cyborg.
it’s not a terrible dog **** game - it’s just a game that many people don’t like - because of abby. the last of us is my favorite and abby messed this up for me. also petition for ashley johnson to get an award for this. top notch performance.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Actually, I didn't play The last of us 1, Left Behind and second part, so thats it. The story is very good, but the ending of epilog is so bad. If you play as Ellie, you will have bow, bolt-action rifle, pump shotgun and another almost no ammo. If you play as Abby, you will have semi-automatic rifle, double-barrel and sawed-off shotgun, crossbow, marksman pistol and another weapon better than Ellie's. If you didn't realized it yet, the developer want that, you would have to like Abby more than Eliie, because Abby have better arsenal. And now end of the epilog. At the epilog you don't know, if it is dream or not. Also Ellie want's revenge almost after circa 2-3 years. The last fight between Ellie and Abby is bad, because it's so long a maybe also hard. And when Elie came to the empty house and tries to play without two fingers there is clifhanger again. But this clifhanger is the last what you see. So you must wait until next part or DLC. 7,5/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a super good game. While, I think the last section in Santa Barbara doesn't add any emotional weight that Ellie didn't already have from Seattle, there's no denying it, as a whole, tells a, funny enough, more hopeful story by the end. I really wish they had introduced Abby's play through either before she has Ellie at gun point, or at some other time when there was down time for Ellie, because it robbed her of her moment to shine. Abby ends up being a worthy addition to to the roster. I just wished the game hadn't asked me to empathize with, who up to that very moment, was my mortal enemy within seconds of her looking like she was gonna kill me. That being said, this get is being review bombed and it does NOT deserve that. If you have real complaints besides I don't like that they killed Joel, then go ahead, but truthfully, uf you can swallow that mid story pill, Abby ends up growing on you real quick. And Ellie does too Expand

Expand

However, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Although, it could be agreeable to a certain extent that there are major flaws in the story-telling portion of the game, which is the fundamental point of the game in the first place, thus garnering as much negativity as it did for the past few days.

Nonetheless, based on personal experience (without any spoilers), the story is not bad, but its not good either. It's the type of story that hits hard to reality, where there are always the possibility of things going bad, but in the game EVERYTHING that could've went bad DID went bad which is the opposite of the fantasy "good ending" that most people want/expect from a game. It's not a game with a **** story, but its a story that makes you feel like **** and i cannot emphasize how ****ty someone could end up feeling after they finish the game.

Also the introduction of the new characters are less developed compared to the first game, so players have less connection to them and honestly most people probably wouldn't care about what happens/happened to them. However, props to the actors and actresses for putting on an amazing performance nonetheless as one could really see and feel the emotions that they are trying to express which makes you relate more with the characters.

Aside from that there are A LOT of flashbacks throughout the game which really kills off the momentum the game builds along the way, would be more arguably better to have the flashbacks as actual gameplay at the start of the game to allow players to redevelop the connection with the characters again, since even the first game's remastered version came out 6 years ago, a lot of time has passed and most players probably had already forgotten all the emotional turmoils that the first game provided.

Despite that, the actual gameplay itself is amazing, with really well developed fight animations, great visuals and stunning scenery. One would not regret taking a minute off the gameplay just to look at the view. However, the combat system does still feel a little under-developed and the AIs have questionable movements and actions. Furthermore, every encounter does get increasingly repetitive and if I dare say "boring" as it seems to be a deliberate attempt in extending the gameplay length by adding in certain unnecessary encounters which does not make sense. (BUT THE ROPE PHYSICS CRAZY)

To sum it all up, its a great game that i would recommend playing it once just for the experience. But personally once is more than enough as there is nothing to hold onto nor reminisce. Overall it may not be GOTY material as there are many aspects to improve on, but nonetheless it was still an enjoyable experience to a certain extent.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just finished the game and I have to say I am disappointed. From a gameplay standpoint the graphics are beautiful and some of the best out there, the gameplay is smooth and everything ran well, Seattle is dangerous but beautiful metropolis that is fun to explore but the story falls short. If you play the game or saw the leaks a couple of months ago you know that Joel dies and I think that moment is were the game starts slowly falling. I called The Last Of Us part I one of my greats and a lot of that was down to the relationship between Joel and Ellie, however this game tears that relationship down and makes Elle hate Joal. This makes sense as the ending of part one saw Joel betray Elle's trust however with Joel's death the game can barely explore this, only through flashbacks do we get to see any development between the two. I have to say the flashbacks are the best moments of the game for me, they feel natural, and it feels like the progression we would have got from part 1. However for most of the game everything else feels convoluted. Multiple new characters are introduced however they never get any time to develop and therefore you can't care when anything bad happens to them. We actually get a chance to play as the villain for a very long time in the game and I think this part of the game is actually ok and explorers the character well, however as this is the woman that killed Joel so we can't connect, this big portion of the game feels empty and I think it was a mistake for the developers to expect player's to take kindly to playing as probably the most hated person in gaming at the moment. Is the game as bad as many of the fan reviews say, no, but as a sequel it betrays everything the first one did. I think the anger from the fans comes from a point of betrayal, as all the progress of the first game was thrown away and basically amounted to nothing. The flashbacks in the game prove that Naughty Dog could have made a great sequel that stays true to the characters, the ingredients were certainly there but shamefully were not capitalised on, Joel and us deserved better. Anyways tlou2 i really really wanted to love you. I tried very hard but there are quite a few issues I had with you. First and foremost the story, the characters in the tlou were very well written and and very easy to form an emotional attachment to, part 2 however the characters we forgettable. The writing felt lazy and forced at times and the pacing was way off. As far as gameplay goes I was disappointed as well. I expected an upgrade from tlou but very little changes here. Would like to have seen more new enemies instead of just variants of the old ones. It felt like every battle plays out the exact same and yeah the jump button what a joke lol. The inclusion of dogs to sniff you out would of been great if not for the absolute brain dead AI and also again easily manipulated and abused here. You can run up grab someone and silent kill them and a guy won’t see you if he’s staring at you as long as you are far enough away. Play on higher difficulties to mitigate this a bit. Now does that mean this game does nothing right? Nope....the graphics are some of the best on the ps4 and this game is visually stunning. Also the audio work is fantastic and voice acting as well. There are moments in this game that do get you scared or nervous and or on the edge of your seat. For me though these moments are too few and by the end I felt like I was forcing myself to finish this game to wrap up the story I didn’t like. Overall though the game is not a zero and it’s not a 10 it lands somewhere in the middle hence why I gave it a 5 could be argued for a 4 for some or even as high as a 6 maybe 7 and I’d listen to those arguments but don’t try and tell me this is the best game of this generation or the worst either. Like I said earlier about horizon zero dawn...don’t even try to tell me this game is close to the Witcher 3 game journos. Expand

Incredible visuals and disturbing sights, but also filled with the little feelgood moments that make it all tolerable. The problem is definitely the pacing. Particularly the Abby part, everything is always as dragged out as it can be. With a few good action scenes throughout. The car chase and the Rat King where very fun! I don't know where most of the controversy came from on the trans character. personally it made sense in the context of the game. but playing as Abby and attempting to kill Ellie was what drop my score to a 7. I almost completely stopped playing because I feared that I would end up killing one of the most beloved video characters of this decade. but I fought on and finished it. in the end I liked the ending, I understood the emotion implications and why Ellie did what she did. but I couldn't help but root for Ellie to kill Abby, Naughty Dog did a terrible job trying to make us like her character. I hate Abby with a passion. I give the game credit as it is hard to make a game better than the first "Last of Us" but I think maybe they should of left this game alone. the first game inst tarnished for me but I could see how it could do so to others.

    TL;DR
    Pros:
    - Game play is amazing
    - Love Dina
    - Really strikes me emotionally ( yelled at TV a lot)
    - Visually amazing
    - Amazing music and audio design

    Cons:
    - Hate Abby with a passion
    - Story can be confusing
    - Joel got did dirty by ND

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Last of us 2 isn't a terrible game but it is a badly written one. First of all, I believe it is important to state that the graphics in this game is only what can be described as a technical marvel. The grass glows with a green hue simultaneously with the sun that casts a bleak shade of yellow onto Seattle and it helps bring this game to life. The music is also very emotional and I love the idea of Joel still being alive in the heart of Ellie through the medium of music. The gameplay of last of us 2 is nearly identical to its predecessor with a few new added additions like trail sniffing dogs, the ability to prone and jump, some new infected enemy types, and some boss battles that admittedly do feel lackluster but ultimately the majority of these additions were welcome. The real meat and potatoes of last of us 2 is its story as last of us is a story-driven game and this definitely where the review score drops dramatically. Joel's death purely exists out of coincidence which adds to the overall contrived and superficial feeling to the plot. Tommy and Joel find themselves in a room with the daughter of one of the surgeons operating on Ellie in the first game who Joel decided to kill. Tommy foolishly gives his and his brother names out to the strangers and even offers them to come back to the Jackson settlement for food and supplies. This is beyond out of character for both Joel and Tommy since they're both very uptight character due to the things they have seen and even in the first game they show a lot of examples of this but due to script convenience, the writers decided to find a basic and ridiculous way to kill Joel. We as gamers are not against the idea of killing a character loved by many but the execution here is not only disrespectful but very contrived and badly thought out as it's decided by coincidence and stupidity. The first half of the game we play as Ellie on a revenge quest to get to Abby in which we see Ellie mentally damaged by her actions and instantly shows a lot of regrets and even suffers from PTSD by the end of the game. In the 2nd half, we play as a new character named Abby who was the daughter of the surgeon mentioned prior. This game uses a lot of blatant manipulation tactics to make you sympathize with Abby. Ellie is forced to kill dogs in hard scripted segments wherein abbys section you are hard scripted to play with dogs twice as well as watch a cutscene in which a zebra is saved from barbed wire. Abby is also given the most innovative and interesting segments as well as the best weapons. This is so contrived, the game wants us gamers to like Abby so badly but if you can see through the writing intentions then the immersion is instantly broken and there are loads of incredibly confusing character decisions like how Mel is totally fine with going into battle being 8 months pregnant and how many times characters are let alone to live after a massive exchange despite them recognizing and establishing the consequences that those who were spared will come looking for them and a lot of the time their prediction was correct making their decision stupid. Joel kills Marlene to ensure that she doesn't come looking for them, this makes sense for his motivations and character. Abby is a cruel and unremorseful character that is so desperately made to look a hero through cheap manipulation tactics whilst incriminating Joel and Ellie who have both done terrible things but we can relate to their motivations as they make sense but this game tries everything to make you dislike these characters. The moral of last of us 2 is very basic: REVENGE IS BAD. It is hammered into your mind to the point the viewer faces emotional fatigue making the game not engaging which I feel wasn't the goal of this game. Last of us 2 is ambitious for the sake of it and doesn't justify its new attempt at storytelling. A film like no country for old men is a great example of subverting expectations but not for pretentious reasons but to fit the narrative that is being told, artsy and new styles are welcome but should be handled with great intelligence because when its dealt with laziness and less talented individuals. We find contrived plots with plot holes and what seems to be a great sense of manipulation. it is easy to write a shocking story that subverts expectations, but it's hard to write a good story with well thought out events and characters. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 1 was an emotional experience, and it captivated players all around the world for just how well it was actually written. this game is no different. First things first, this is NOT a perfect game. I can agree that this game could have been better, there are 2 major plot points in which I do not agree with. (if you played the game you most definitely know the 2) For starters, Ellie is an amazing protagonist, she is acted extremely well and her story is so dark, that you can't help but feel for her. I personally LOVE Ellie as a protagonist, but I can't help but think that the only reason I like her is because of the base the Last of Us 1 has set up. The flashbacks in which Ellie appears are the best parts of the game, but as I just said, the first game is the only reason in which I am so wrapped up in the story. To top it off, Ellie never gets her moment in this game, she never gets her resolve, no revenge, no shining moment. She simply just gets absolutely low balled by Neil Druckman, and I have no Idea why. Aside from Ellie never shining, I do admire Naughty Dog's attempt to make you feel for the main antagonist. It's bold, but I feel like it doesn't quite work. The flashbacks as Abby just didn't captivate me as much as Ellie's did, and in the end I still wanted Abby dead. Naughty Dog took a great leap in hoping the player would feel for Abby, but I am here to say that I think killing Abby, in the theater, where the protagonist and antagonist finally meet, would've been so much better. Imagine playing as Abby for 10+ hours, making it to the theater where Ellie is hiding, only to get shot by Ellie in the head. That would've been so much more powerful than letting Abby live because the character you just controlled for 10 hours and her story are all erased by a single bullet. It carries so much more weight than this "meta" narrative that Neil tries to push. Those are my only gripes with this game. The story could've been as powerful as the Last of Us 1, but it just falls flat.
Now if you are still reading, (thanks if you are), I'm going to sum up my review in a quick paragraph about the game-play. I love it. If you enjoy the Uncharted series and Last of Us game play, you will love this game's game play. There is tense moments of hide and seek action and split second crafting decision making that truly make it a tense experience. The infected are smarter and the AI is tough to defeat. (I played on Hard btw) The stealth is fun and there is burst of action scenes like in Uncharted that truly make both Ellie's and Abby's journey really adrenaline filled. Not only has the game-play improved, but cinematically and stylistically, killing a person in a video game has never been so gruesome. Stabbing people in the throat and watching them choke on their own blood, throwing molotovs at dogs and hearing them cry as their owner just watches them burn, hitting and infected in the head with a hammer and hearing their skull getting crushed. THIS GAME IS GRUESOME and I love it. Naughty Dog really outdid themselves with the combat and action scenes.
So overall, this is by no means a bad game, hence my 7 out of 10 rating, but it could have been an amazing game with just a few tweaks to the story. If you read my entire essay, thanks and I hope you enjoy this game too!!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A story of ups and downs

    POSITIVE :

    Gameplay
Faithful to the first game with attention to detail and a few nice new features.
Small point of criticism > environmental puzzles and unlocking safes become cumbersome after a while

    Voice acting
    TOP notch
Actors know what they're doing and it's seamlessly synched with their motions (due to motion acting)

    Sounds & soundtrack
Beautiful, would've liked to hear more background music to support the mood.

    Graphics
One of the best-looking titles with stable framerate on PS4. Not a lot of bugs/glitches.

    MIXED FEELINGS:

    Storyline
It's not horrible, there are great and memorable moments to be found but overall, I feel let down. If I think too much on it, immersion = lost.

For me personally a story of revenge requires either fulfillment or redemption (forgive w/o regret).
There's none to be found here.

    Character assassination in cutscenes.
See a door? Let's go/burst right through it. While you as a player are either very careful (stealthy) or go in guns blazing with excellent marksmanship / next to unlimited health, in cutscenes the story takes control for the sake of plot and screws characters over. Not how I expect seasoned survivors/scouts to act in real life (and also how they did in the first part). Sorry, but this comes over as lazy writing really ...

Overtly use of flashbacks and character switches.
I get it, you want to show 2 sides of the story and help understand how these characters feel. Just don't exaggerate, it slows down the pace immensely and some storylines feel unneccessary.

    Strange take on pregnancy.
A woman who's pregnant for +6 months can parkour like a champ.
A woman who's pregnant for x weeks becomes jaded all of a sudden and can't move.
I don't get it, who thought this is close to true life and even respectful to women?

The hunt for Joel that isn't.
Abby by chance encounters Joel. He saves her.
First of all, what are the odds, lady Luck must be smiling on our new prota-/antagonist.
Second, there's no after-thought to the rescue, no duality in vengeance which would be the humane reaction.

Overall I'd rate it 6.5, a lot of work went in the development and really, it does show.
But the main story ... written for the sake of a mundane plot.

Finally, 3 lessons I take away from this adventure :
(and the protagonists should've done in the first place)

    1. if you're a renowned killer and you're outnumbered by strangers never tell them your real name

    2. if you see your dad point-blank being worked on with a golfclub, shoot first, ask questions later 3. the doors make for nice songs but are lethally hazardous, enter with care To Naughty Dog I say, when you write a storyboard, PROOF-READ it and check what works, what does not. Do NOT censor genuine points of criticism. Learn from mistakes and grow as a writer.

I wondered, are the writers just trying to make this girl the most unlikeable protagonist ever? Then when I saw how they were presenting the new protagonist and how it seemed she was the real hero (and Ellie the real villian) which made sense to me, but I still didn't like it. Nevertheless, I wanted to finish and I have to say honestly, I do not regret it. I believe the game really picks up after the half way point and things just become more interesting for me. At the end of the story I shed tears for everything that had happened, and all the consequences. This is not the greatest game ever, and I don't think it's better than the first, but it is worthy... This is by no means a happy story. Still, if you played the first, you don't HAVE to play this one... Expand

I’ve only and I can’t stress enough on ONLY given this game a three star review and that is pushing it like genuine review probably 4.5 - 5 out of 10 and that is solely based on the parts where you play as Ellie, and the gameplay as a whole because if you liked/loved TLOU the gameplay is more or less the same and being a guitar fan I do like the little snippets of Ellie’s new talent being put on show, but that is where the good in this game ends completely, but I’ll explain.

I felt lied to from the trailers and overwhelming disappointed in the direction they chose for this game, I absolutely hate and I mean actually hate the character Abby and wanted nothing more than to stop her from breathing in the game I don’t give a rats arse about her backstory, maybe if she was in the first game and it was about her, but no, she is the invader and she is a psychopathic monster that I just wanted the closure of killing her to end that game, but even if I did get that when finishing the game there is absolutely nothing as a reward, Ellie this character that we have grown to love has been dragged through the mud and made to be some mental case and is ultimately left with nothing, “congratulations for finishing the game all that’s left is for the main character to kill herself because why not” they couldn’t of destroyed what was a masterpiece of a story more if they tried (wait no they could make you play as Abby for longer that would do it) first thing I did when I was forced to play as this terrible character is run to the first point where I was able to get killed, I no lo her cared about getting caught by enemy’s or detected by infected I just ran straight in, I mean I wasn’t getting any satisfaction from the game I might aswell get it from watching the character i just wanted to die from the start die over and over again. This game was about as enjoyable as bowel cancer... if you make a part III please just use it to erase the abortion of a game this was by making it all a horrible dream. And this time don’t pretend to include characters you kill off in the first 30 minutes of the game. It’ll take a lot to earn your fan base’s trust back Naughty dog, but for the sake of the amazing content you use to make, I hope you do.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Naughty Dog was my second best game company after Rockstar but they are no where near my tenth as of now. They ruined a perfectly likeable game and character for literally everyone. There's so many ways this story could have gone. The fact that they deliberately decided to murder a beloved character in the most contrived and gruesome way possible while fully understanding the effects of this choice on the millions of fans out there is as disrespectful as it is outrageous. There's so many ways the story could've progressed without killing off Joel. Pretty much everyone's "raison d'être" for playing the game. I probably could've come up a better story than this contrived **** being force fed to fans because they lack the motivation to tell a good compelling and engaging story like the prequel. If they wanted revenge to be the backbone of this story, they could have pulled it off regardless in a remarkable fashion without having to murder the main reason why people were gonna buy the game. This obviously explains why they lied to everyone about everything. Even the trailer was a **** lie. If you wanted a revenge story and relished the thought of murdering one of the characters, why not perhaps kill off Tommy and have Joel and Ellie go avenge his death. Seems pretty logical to me. The Joel in the TLOU certainly will do that if he lost his brother and I can totally see Ellie tagging along considering Joel will be pretty old and not as agile and strong as he used to be. If that's still too extreme, why not murder say a pregnant Maria and leave Tommy badly injured in a raid so much that he has to rely on Joel and Ellie to exact revenge for his beloved wife in his stead. Or why not destroy the town, kill a few people if you have to and mortally hurt Joel if you wanted to have Ellie go solo. Beat him up, even shoot off his leg like you did but keep him alive. It will make better sense why Ellie spared Abby's life in the end.
I could think of so many other scenarios and despite not being a writer, I can tell the story was forced. Forced so much that even if they tried, there will always still be loose ends and half plots to deal with. The game just feels broken and messed up on so many levels, I can't help but think this is some sort of a propaganda story. They had no reason to kill off Joel, yet they did, to prove a useless point that makes no sense at all.
I'm not gonna say anything positive about this game because when you start a game on such a badly horrific note, that's what you're gonna get. It destroyed the experience for me and I can't help but wish the game never released at all. Or it released with completely different characters telling a completely different story. You deserve a lot less than you're getting Naughty Dog. Better be grateful!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a fan review. It’s important to note, because I’m not a hardcore gamer. I’m a fan of The Last Of Us, which I believe set the standard for story telling in video games. The Last Of Us 2 dismantled that standard for better or worse.

Don't get me wrong, TLOU2 is a great game that makes incredibly progressive and interesting story decisions, but it’s an action game first and foremost. It's not a story-telling vehicle disguised as a videogame. That comes across in the level design. There is no way to play the game successfully without killing just about everything and everyone (including dogs – much to wife’s severe unhappiness). You can sneak past some areas, but you'll miss vital resources and almost always get killed a few times in the effort. The character development and story progression is basically designed around game-play with few exceptions, i.e. the flashback with Joel and Ellie at the Natural History Museum. Taking that into consideration, the game falls into the “great” category. It’s really fun, incredibly violent and awesomely challenging.

The problem with TLOU2 is the lack of respect the writers had for the source material coupled with their attempt to moralize and manipulate. I read a great deal of negative and positive reviews after I played through the entire game. To be frank, I’ve been processing the story for about a day. In my humble opinion (I’m never wrong), the negative reviews are as legit as the positive. Very few people actually care whether the central characters are gay/transgender – they are upset because Joel is tortured and murdered by a character that they are then expected to not only play but to eventually sympathize with. It’s not an easy transition and I found myself more than once placing Abby in the line of fire just to watch her head explode. However, it ultimately works. I like Abby and, after I got over the initial hatred, I really enjoyed playing with her set of skills. I acknowledge that the writers are being manipulative by establishing Abby’s picture-perfect relationship with her dad, by introducing Lev and Yara, by turning Ellie into a killer of pregnant women and dogs, by giving Owen a bit of depth when he choses to spare a Scar, but those moments give nuance to the journey. I forgive them.

What I can’t forgive is the third act. There are so many misfires in the story’s conclusion that it’s pointless to try to innumerate them. Let’s just say that Ellie and Abby learn absolutely nothing from the experiences that have been clumsily designed to teach the game player that the cycle of revenge is self-destructive. Wouldn’t it have been great if Ellie had actually learned something before she lost everything? Wouldn’t it have been nice if Abby could have expressed acknowledgement if not an outright apology for killing Joel who basically rescued a 14-year-old girl from being murdered for the chance of saving millions? Let’s not forget (as the writers have) that Ellie was not revived or consulted in the decision, and Joel was marched away at gunpoint by Fireflies who would have rather killed him. Yes, there are two sides to every story, but the ending to TLOU2 is so bleak, so joyless, so aggravating, so pointless that it dramatically overshadows what could have been another game-changer in videogame industry. So close.

The Story and Characters (The Writing):
It is bad. It had some good ideas but the execution is very poorly done. The more you think about the story the more you realize how bad and nonsensical it is. You'll have plot points happen which are plain stupid and have characters do things which frankly make no sense. The pacing needed a lot of work and considering how high expectations were for the writing with The Last of Us Part II being a narrative driven game this is not good. FYI it isn't terrible because it has some good moments and if restructured could have been better than what we got.

    Gameplay:
What's a game without gameplay. The Last of Us Part II's gameplay is solid. It plays the exact same way as the first game with the addition of a dodge button and a few tweaks to movement and combat (honestly its like a clunkier Uncharted 4...) but the gameplay is average, it works although more innovation would have been nice.

Technical Aspects (Graphics, Sound Design, Music, Voice Acting):
From a technical stand point the game is amazing. The graphics are absolutely beautiful and the attention to detail is a thing to behold. The sound in this game is wonderful too, the musical score and voice acting are top notch and a pleasure to listen to. Technical aspect wise they nailed it (although there's some technical issues to iron out and enemies could have used some more variety).

    Final Thoughts:
The Last of Us Part II is an average game. The story and the writing is bad yes but the game itself is okay. The solid gameplay and great technical aspects help make the game better. That being said given all the hype and expectation it is a huge letdown and definitely soured me towards the franchise.

(It's not a bad game in spite of the poor writing but I also wouldn't call it good either and definitely not amazing. Average game)

Now yes, first I want to say that the game is graphically beautiful in all its aspects, it has almost no errors, the game mechanics seems excellent to me, I would have liked to have polished the topic of jumps a little more but nothing from the other world, In addition I also loved the model of the characters in the game, they seem real people, each damage or each bullet can be seen reflected in our skin as in that of the enemy, now, what things did I not like about this second part? In the first place, I didn't really like the plot holes that can be found in the game, another thing I don't like is the end given to the bone game, how the **** do you let the woman you followed through the whole damn game escape? , Another thing that I did not like was the stupid death of Joel, bone, he is a person with you play in the first part and at the time of the game they are already killing you, what the hell were the writers thinking ?, Now to conclude my perfect ending would have made Ellie kill Abby and with her last strength Lev could kill Ellie, thus showing that revenge is bad whether you are good or bad in history.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The good: The most beautiful looking game I have seen on the Playststion 4. Wonderful cinematics and gameplay help push the story along and the score is on par with Part I. A lengthy story worth the price of the game. The gameplay is improved upon from the first game and polished in all aspects with a top notch system for upgrading and crafting. New enemies and a variety of options for taking them on makes for fun and very tense combat throughout.

The bad: Certain characters behave in ways that make you question if Naughty Dog simply abandoned how the character was established in Part I or if they chose to ignore those characteristics in favor of pushing along the narrative they wanted to tell. Introducing a new character that can be viewed as the antagonist and then then forcing the player to take control of them for half of them game and try to make the player sympathize with them simply does not work. Revenge is painted to look bad in this game for one person and yet seems to be okay for another that is also a mistress to a man with a pregnant wife. It is very difficult to root for the character that kills a protagonist from the first game, even if that person is a bad person in the world of The Last of Us. Naughty Dog still built the character to become loved in the first game and players are supposed to simply switch and view him oppositely in this game to make the new character, Abby better received or liked by fans. In my own opinion, the biggest mistake of the game was establishing that Joel was wrong for rescuing Ellie at the end of Part I. Having the first game end with the player left to decide if it was right or wrong is a much better option than flat out deciding it was a fact that it was wrong and later doubling down that Joel was blind by stating he would do it again. New characters that are allies and friends of Abby (her WLF allies) are poorly written and very much unlikable and uninteresting. Yara and Lev will also divide crowds. I found both the characters, and their arc interesting.

However, credit should be given to Naighty Dog for following through with the story they wanted to tell and not letting fear of backlash dictate their path. The game does everything well but falls flat on it's narrative, especially when compared to its predecessor. It is sure to divide fans greatly but is not deserving of an overall bombing of ratings due to it's story. The game is still very entertaining and an experience that should be had by all fans of Naufhty Dog and The Last of Us world. I do not feel that it is worthy of complete praise either. What it does right is done very well, and where it falls, it falls hard. It falls in the middle ground for me but is lifted by what it does successfully accomplish. A solid 7/10 even 7.5, but nothing more due to what I fails to execute well at.

Including the story which at times can feel very heavy and human the quiet moments between characters shines but at times it feels like the story thinks it's trying to be deep when it's a very overused trope of "revenge bad these are humans" I have seen many media use this same story beatamd do it much better I like the ambition but it's not a very compelling story to me personally. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The Last of Us PT. 2 is a well made game. Visually it grasps an aspect of reality that no other game has of yet. But, it fails to portray a fully convincing or entertaining story that was expected as a sequel. Being that this is a story focused game, too much weight was placed on it. In the first game that helped because the story was good, in this one, it falls apart

Neil **** decided it would be a good idea to focus the story onto a character nobody in the everloving world gives a **** about (sorry if my spelling is off, device is being weird). But, surprisingly is a character that has some thought put into her. Though the way she kills a certain character is unacceptable, her side is messy through many different ways. In her quest to find the remainders of a familiar organization, she loses her friends, loved ones, her home, and much more. But grows a relationship with new characters and allies.

Ellie's side is a lot focused when it comes to her objective. Ellie is determined to get her revenge at the cost of her friend's lives and more. She is reckless and even at times scary. Gameplay is brutal and disgusting. There are more ways to take out your enemies. You can rush them head on with shotguns, rifles and fists, or you can stealthily take them down with silenced pistols, bows and knives. At one point, Abby's side felt more like Joel's gameplay (from TLOU1), and Ellie seemed like Ellie. Also, this is something I'm quoting right now. "Graphics do not make a a game." That being said, the areas and world's are beautiful and breathtaking. Each new location is more gorgeous than the last. The Last Of Us ll is confusing and weird. The directors and writers made decisions I will never forgive, but the game overall makes for a good package. Though in my opinion I would wait till it is cheaper.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After 7 long years my excitement for this game was unmeasurable. The amazing characters and story of the first game kept me replaying the story over and over again with the same emotional effect each time. The Last of Us Part 2 is a flawed story with underdeveloped and unlikeable characters and very bad pacing. Throughout the story I was dumbfounded at the key decisions made by the developers at naughty dog.

Let’s begin with the death of Joel. Now I am fine with naughty dog killing off Joel however the stupidity of the way this happens and the disrespect shown to the characters of Joel and Tommy is insane. The death of Joel seems to be used as a scapegoat for the lack of story ideas of the game developers sending Ellie on a basic revenge plot that contradicts itself throughout.

The game wants you to feel angered by Joel’s death fuelling the player to engage on a quest for revenge against the WLF and Abby, however it also tries to make the player understand the actions of Abby with most attempts being unsuccessful just proving the unlikeability of Her as a character.

One of the worst decisions in my opinion was to replace the Ellie and Joel relationship with Abby and lev it felt like the developers didn’t know what to do with Abby for her 3 day Seattle period so they sent her on a side quest that has nothing to do with the overall game, in my opinion it’s only included to allow naughty dog to milk this series of a part 3 (the adventures of Abby and lev). Abby and Ellie’s story whilst in seattle should run along side each other if we are to truly relate to the characters as we would kill a character as Ellie (Owen as an example) and when we go to playing as Abby and are interacting with Owen the player does not care (just need to mention Owens terrible flat voice acting, I have never seen a more uninteresting character).

And now onto the ending where Ellie leaves her family to finish Abby off and doesn’t because of a Joel flashback, the developers want the player to understand that Ellie has now forgiven Joel for lying all those years ago even though the entire length of Ellie’s story was about avenging Joel. I find it hard to describe my feelings towards this ending as I see it in many ways and I know that it does work if you look at it in the right manner however this can be very hard as naughty dog have strayed so far from what this game was originally about

The main message that naughty dog try to send is that REVENGE IS FATAL! Ellie loses everyone she loved like she explains in the first game, and Abby loses all of her close friends

    I have very mixed feelings!

We all know the redeeming qualities of this game...

Lazy story writing that equated to violence/revenge = bad.

They try to put you in the shoes of a person impacted by the violence committed in the first game by Joel... problem is the character isn't likeable or relatable. Also I couldn't feel guilt for what Joel did as it was justified, it was Ellies life for the CHANCE of a cure... without concent.

The game does have some highlights and is visually stunning which is what brought my score up to a 6.
They include the hospital boss fight, the jump scares from the walls and the open part of Seattle.

However anything with the "scars" in was just terrible, peaking at the point you take a trip to their island... it felt like you had landed in a Nora village from Horizon Zero Dawn (a game I love but not akin to the last of us!), this happens just when you think you have finished up playing as Abby which is tiresome as she was so unlikeable.

Don't even get me started on the ending, I had hoped the game would redeem itself at that point but you get nothing from it, trying to preach the narrative of revenge = bad... but was such an anticlimax. If you want to play for yourself and judge then buy this pre owned and then likely sell it.

Truly gutted by how bad this game was.

Graphically the game is very beautiful, it is not a slap either but I clearly do not have to complain about this side. I only encountered one big bug in my 27 hours of play, so the optimization is also there, the game is technically well finished.

The scenario ... great subject ... it is a completely subjective opinion, I rather appreciated it, I found it coherent but it also did not carry emotionally as I expected. I found the new characters quite bland.

The big problem for me is above all in the very structure of the game, what we do there is just absolutely not interesting! We advance, we arrive in an area with enemies inside or outside but will ultimately be the same as the previous one, human or infected no matter there is no difference in how to defeat them. It lacks surprises, variations in events.
Having to shave the walls and furniture to 20 cm to see if we can loot an item or not is simply unbearable, Naughty Dog should have made this more visible.
The successions of keys on which to press to create ammunition or care are not intuitive and pose problem during fights in difficult mode because the enemy simply does not leave us time to create anything.

TLOU Part II is for me a good game, pleasant to do, no more no less.

Naughty Dog absolutely nail the atmosphere, environments and the infected are as terrifying as ever with some interesting new ones thrown into the mix.

Yes they kill Joel, this was expected! The underhanded way of doing it though really ruins the type of character he was in the first game and they do nothing in the story to really conclude that Joel or tommy would be stupid enough to reveal their names, This left a sour taste in my mouth for much of the remainder of my playthrough as i felt the writing was incredibly lack luster if this was how they chose to off him.

What followed is a pursuit to kill Abby and cohorts through a gorgeous world with generation defining graphics and some fun gamplay... at first. Whilst the envirnoments and graphics were always great the gameplay became rather boring fast. Something i never noticed in the first one, this mainly falls down to the reduced character building between the ellie and Dina, as compared to Ellie and joel in the first one and this leads to some awfully boring solo sections that do not do well as they are just too long.

They try to portray the violence as something ellie is having a hard time coming to grips with when you meat one of the friends of abby and smash her face in... however youd already slit at least 200 throats by this point.. so the message just doesnt work.

Abby was interesting and i did prefer her section but the game forces you to restart the upgrade the mechanic and they do this at a time when the story feels like its at a climax really ruining the momentum of the plot.

The ending... just awful and dragged out 4 hours too long.

The story just have some amazing sections, the relationship between Dina and Ellie, the relationship between Abbie and Lev, Abby and Owen are all well told but they just dont linger and these moments long enough.

As for gamplay sections there were so many that were just top of their class, the section in the subway, the sniper run, the boat run, the island and too many small ones to name, but they are just overshadowed by long drawn out pieces of boredome, usually alone with no back and forth between the characters.

The game is not bad, by a long shot, but for me the story and gamplay are just not enough to be a great game just a decent one. Id give it a 7.5 out of 10 but it has to be 7 o r8 and i cant justify an 8.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So this is my first review of a game but I feel I have a relatively unbiased opinion that I can share. I hope it helps someone. There are spoilers below but I have tried to be vague when possible to prevent ruining it for anyone who hasn't finished it and/or has not read into the internet anti-hype. I broke this into two sections: story & gameplay. Story: I want to say the ending is actually fine and I'm not as mad about it as I thought I would be. The story hinges on a cliche revenge arc with Ellie out to spill blood to reach a sense of closure. Half the game you play as Abby, the source of Ellie's anger. At first I was frustrated about this but it ended up being okay, I enjoyed seeing both sides of a story. As things progress you become angrier and angrier at certain characters and the writing attempts to fill you with confusing hate: "I hate Abby and I want her to die but now I'm starting to understand and feel for her. But she still deserves it." it's unorthodox which makes the player uncomfortable. That's intentional. You experience stories and letters that show the humanity of those you may (or may not) kill to progress the storyline. Again, this makes you feel conflicted and guilty (for some players) but in certain situations its a necessary evil for survival. That's the universe they've created, people do awful things on both sides. Upon completing the game you'll perhaps come to a lack of closure as many have. However, in my interpretation justice was served to a degree with the suffering and pain brought upon the antagonist (but is Abby an antagonist?). However you want to perceive it, it's done and that's what we received. All in all, the story is fine. It's not far from a cookie cutter revenge story without the revenge but at least it's different. Gameplay: It's beautiful, nearly flawless and I never caught any significant bugs except one instance where I fired a gun and the art from the flash stayed on the gun the rest of the level. Not game breaking but a little silly. That being said, it's realistic and there isn't a lot of variety. You do the same thing every single fight. Sneak around and slit everyone's throat or aggro them and let them come at you one at a time and kill them with melee weapons (ammo isn't exactly easy to come by and the AI behavior of human enemies is pretty predictable). Every time. Same thing. I got so frustrated I just started sprinting through battles to proceed. Combat against infected was more enjoyable. The behavior of the infected (especially stalkers) was much more diverse and enjoyable but it still got very repetitive over time. I truly wish I enjoyed the combat more.

Considering the semi disappointing story (although not quite as weak as the internet made it seem) and the repetitive slave like combat (slave like in the sense you don't really have much freedom to experiment) but the beautiful imagery and recreation of these real places in the US, I'd give it a realistic 6 out of 10. It's a fine game, not great, won't ever play it again. Moving on with my life.

I will say the passing is god awful and feel like my time was being wasted in the Abby section, if that would have been spliced in with Ellie’s secontions more seamlessly I might have enjoyed the game more. But I feel that the game’s philosophy and ending are amazing. Expand

They could have kept the storyline simple and taut whilst alluding to the fact that good and evil is not black and white. Instead it is handled in a very overbearing manner which makes you play as two conflicting protagonists. How this could this ever be satisfying? I feel like the developers cared more about achieving maximum shock value and notoriety rather than respecting WHY gamers want to play this.

I’d classify this as SPOILER LIGHT - as I actually want to encourage people to give the game a chance - it doesn’t actually say what happens, but it references certain things !! Summary: Story is good but not as good TLOU1, and has a couple of underwhelming and frustrating narrative choices - the ending was almost excellent, but ultimately bowed to making a statement about the themes of the game. I went into this game with awareness of the negative attention it was receiving, but managed to stay spoiler free - perhaps this helped lower my expectations which were sky high after playing the original which was potentially my favourite game of all time.

The graphics, gameplay, sound design and environments are fantastic as to be expected, so I won’t really cover them, as story and character development are the contentious points.

I actually really liked a number of the new side characters, primarily Jesse, Dina, Lev, Yara and Owen - with Tommy also a great, but familiar face. Spoilers from here onwards

    Characters:

Jesse at first seemed a bit bland, almost as if he was there to fill space, but he started to really grow on me, as someone who truly cared about his friends.

Dina had a lot of personality in my eyes - she was confident despite hardships in her past (such as killing someone when she was 10 to protect her mother) amongst other things, funny, smart, and caring - though unfortunately she never really seemed to make any decisions that didn’t revolve around her very recent love for Ellie.

Owen was actually the one Wolf that I felt any empathy towards - he very much did seem to have a personality of his own, and beyond that, he always seemed to want the “right” choice - and was fiercely loyal to those around him. He may have been a part of what happened at the start of the game, but certainly worth noting he was willing to fight his own friends to prevent them from taking an extra step.

Yara and Lev - these two were pretty much what kept the Non-Ellie story rolling for me. During day 1 of the non-Ellie sections I was very disinterested and wanted to get back to going after what my primary goal in this game was. But I actually became intensely interested in the story of Yara and Lev - they had gone through pain, and judgement, but had not turned hateful as those around them had done. Beyond this though, they also followed one of the key themes of the game that what you do does affect the others around you, whether it was the “right” choice or not.

    Story:

It’s not as good of the first one - not even close. But I don’t think it is as bad as I was lead to believe.

The catalyst event for the story is difficult to take - but makes a lot of sense in the context of past events - and tied into the theme of both revenge, and that your actions have consequences for both those around you, and for yourself.

The throwback sequences with Ellie and Joel were masterfully done, and a real throwback to the first game. I actually think they may be the sequences that I enjoyed most - which I think is natural because the Ellie/Joel dynamic is unmatched by anything in this game. They also had some quite difficult emotional moments, as well as touching and heartwarming ones.

One in particular touches on Ellie’s determination to find out what happened at the hospital. The results of this were a shocking plot point, but one I really felt impacted by, and which made everything that had happened so far in the game more difficult emotionally for Ellie. On the section where you are not controlling Ellie - what I will say is all that made this section at all playable for me was one particular flashback, the Yara and Lev subplot, and Owen. Otherwise I wanted to get back to what drove my for the rest of the game - the same revenge Ellie was after.

The ending/aftermath - I’m torn - there was a lot to like about the ending, but it’s almost spoiled by one particular non-action in my eyes. I think I would have hated it if it weren’t for a cutscene at the very end, which felt very much like the first games, but with the added poignancy of knowing that the chance of what was discussed in it was taken from them.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Kudos to you, Laura Bailey. The gameplay is good, as in fun, for the most part. Abby's section is better than Ellie's. The problem is that by the time I got to Abby's part, the repetitive gameplay (mechanics) had gotten a bit tedious. Then there's the main issue I have with the game, the story. The story is absolute trash! For a STORY-BASED game, this clearly ruined the experience for me. Abby, though well-acted, is a TERRIBLY written character. She is unlikeable, and the attempts to get me to like her failed miserably. Another "tell" that the story is bad is the fact that the game is too long. Averaging at 25-30 hours, as opposed to the 15-18 in the first game, you are left feeling drained and completely unsatisfied. I feel my time was completely wasted. I would not recommend buying this game at full price, if at all. To those out there who are still curious about the game, I suggest either viewing a playthrough on youtube OR waiting to buy the game after it's been discounted at GameStop (at least by half). DO NOT PAY FULL PRICE FOR THIS GAME. After my first playthrough, I rated the game 6/10. Now that I've played AND viewed the game a number of times, I can't give it higher than a 5/10. The gameplay had very few improvements over the first game, and that wasn't the most praised aspect of part 1. None of the characters, beyond Joel, are really that likable. This includes Ellie. The story doesn't make sense, especially after learning what Naughty Dog was trying to say. That's all I can say without spoiling anything.....more anyway. Naughty Dog, you dropped the ball on this one. Expand

It is a technically speaking game, the gameplay is good, it has wonderful graphics, some beautiful scenes, beautiful music, the problem with the game is the story. It had a very strange course, characters dying for free, the joel's death was very meaningless, the joel from the first game would never die like that, it is a game but with a very controversial story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game on a technical level is phenomenal- the fights are fluid and intense, the atmosphere for each area hits the nail on the head. The story has it’s ups and downs (mostly ups.)

Abby was an excellently executed character, while I feel at times the pacing of events could have been better, the story by the end felt quite fulfilling despite it being controversial. At first, I hated playing as Abby due to what she did to Tommy, Jessie and of course Joel- but as I played as her I gradually began to like her more and even went on to like her more than Ellie. This was momentarily however, as after switching back to Ellie I fell right back into her story and my love for the character was rejuvenated. I think that’s why I think the game is great, as it played with my feelings for characters a lot.

Some of the problems I had was some of the pacing, how Joel and Jesse were dealt with and the separation I felt this game had from the first.

I think this game feels more of a standalone masterpiece rather than a sequel to the masterpiece that was the first.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is amazing when Joel & Ellie are on screen, but the other characters just aren’t interesting even though the game wants them to be. Instead of fleshing out the tattered relationship between Joel & Ellie, we get snippets of it and a whole lot of forced emotional moments that just don’t hit home. We haven’t traveled with these characters enough to care when they eventually die. Key characters make a return from the original and play little to no part here. Tommy is held to yet another small role that makes an occasional appearance just to remind you here’s still around. Joel’s role is pretty much a whipping post for Ellie’s emotions. He’s scalded for 95% of his screen time and doesn’t really ever explain why he did what he did to Ellie in person. Instead, we are forced into SJW warfare with lesbian, woman-power, men suck and must die injected into our eyeballs for most of the game. Although, the game isn’t bad it just doesn’t hold up to the original story-wise. Gameplay wise is a different story. The mechanics are expanded and work well. The game is intense and brutal as expected. Although, Ellie and Abby control virtually the same which is a big disappointment considering the vastly different styles portrayed in the great cutscenes. Lastly, the soundtrack just doesn’t have the heart and feeling of the original. When you heard the original soundtrack you felt everything the composer wanted you to feel. Here the soundtrack is virtually absent outside of a few moments. I will say the song Joel sings at the beginning really packs a emotional punch, but ND Ruins it by going back to it several times during the game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Last Of Us Part II is a good game, story wasn't as powerful as the first installment and killing Joel was a huge disappointment but at the same time I can understand why Neil Druckmann made that decision to let Ellie's character and story evolve. You also get to play as Abby and Naughty Dog tried to make you see her side of the story and understand there is no good guys in Last Of Us, however I'm too stubborn and Joel is one of my all time favorite characters so she can go suck a d***. Also the other side characters aren't very likable. Dina is a pain. Mel is a whiny b****, Manny isn't funny and Owen is one of the most vanilla characters.

The graphics are way ahead of it's time and I did have fun playing this game. My huge problem with it is the ending. The ending made the whole game pointless and gave Abby the better ending compared to Ellie. I would of rather the ending have been a dream like Dallas and Joel is still alive.

Was it the game I wanted? Graphics 100% Controls and Crafting 100% even the world they had from the original was 100% but if tweaks had been made to the storyline then this game would of been a proud sequel to one of the greatest games ever made.

Graphics, Audio and Gameplay are all superb as is the voice-acting which is brilliantly tied into the facial expressions and emotions of the characters themselves making them very realistic. A special mention for the groundbreaking accessibility options that allow this game to be enjoyed by a much wider audience. My hat goes off to Naughty Dog for this. Unfortunately, that’s it for the good things about this game.

LOTU I was a masterpiece because the story centred on the evolving relationship between Joel and Ellie who, in turn, both grew in our affections. We waited 7 years to continue the story with those characters who were close to our heart, then what happens? Not only does Joel get brutally murdered so early on but we are forced to play as his killer for half the game. Any attempt by ND to try and get us to empathise with Abby just fails miserably at this point and the motivation to continue playing the game just drops drastically. The final insult is the highly unsatisfactory ending to, what is overall, a very grim and depressing story which I have no desire to play through again.

In short, the game had everything we wanted but the story.

The few additions, the jump button and the dodging mechanic honestly just serve to make the combat and exploration feel a tad wonky, but they're harmless. Everyone's already bashed this story and characters and I hold many similar reservations. And no, I am not homophobic or transphobic. I don't play games to be preached at, I play for entertainment and to escape the crappy reality of real life. This game fails at that so hard that it shouldn't have even exist. That said, I do NOT condone the fans of the first game sending slurs and death threats to the people involved in this game.
