The Last of Us is the story of Joel and Ellie, and so is The Last of Us Part II.... or so i thought. There are improvements from the first game in terms of level design, graphics, and gameplay, all of which have been refined and improved. The sound, accessibility settings, and enemy movements, are other aspects that were improved mightly, and as a game, this one actually plays better than the original game. However, these improvements aren't enough to make up for the story that they gave fans.

What a slap in the face that was. Beloved characters were treated terribly and often made decisions that didn't match up with who we had seen them as before. A specific example is within the first 2 hours of the game, many of you will know what I'm talking about. I actually liked Jesse and Dina, although they were a bit underdeveloped as they focused more on building up unlikable characters. The first 10 hours is actually pretty good, but then there is roughly a 10 hour section of the game that was incredibly boring and frustrating to play as no matter what the writers did, it wouldn't change my opinion on the characters they focused on. There was only one enjoyable part during that section, which isn't enough to make up for the rest of it.

Then the writers make you dislike that character even more and it makes you think that you'll actually get a satisfying resolution just to end up getting an extremely sad and anticlimactic ending that ultimately made no sense.

I never wanted a sequel, as I wasn't sure that they could recapture the spark, and boy did my fears come true. Naughty Dog really missed the mark here.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here comes a legit review from someone that' sees the game for what it wants to say to the players. Something that's overlooked because you can't see clearly when you're disappointed and angry about the game.

The game is beautiful. A very complex story. Very hard to sink in. It kicks off with you being angry that one of your favorite characters gets killed so early in the game. I was too. I didn't like Abby at first. There were moments I wanted to give up playing because I didn't want to play her for so many hours. But I get why ND did this.
Abby kills Joel because he killed her father. The only one that could make a vaccine to save the world. Ellie seeks revenge now too and kills Abby's friends. Abby finds out about their deaths. She later finds where they are and kills Jesse, nearly kills Tommy, Dina and Ellie. Saved by Lev (the kid Abby has chosen to look after) that didn't approve of her actions. Revenge is a never ending circle.
You get to play as Abby and see a whole other side of her. Her life story. Purpose? To change the players view of her and forgive her. She had a big character development and so has Ellie and I'll get to that.
You get to see how Abby changes in the game when she chooses to take care of two kids over her own crew (The WLF). Also the kids were Scars. The WLF and Scars are fighting each other. One of the kids gets killed bu WLF soldiers and so would the other kid if Abby didn't stand in their way. She defied orders to step aside to protect the kid. This reminds me of how Joel starts to see Ellie as a daughter and takes care of her. You get to play Joel but in a different body.
Now Ellie hunts down Abby again. Finds her strapped to a pole at a beach. She was exhausted. She lost a lot of muscle mass. Ellie pities her and cuts her down. Abby goes to cut down the kid that was also at the beach. She later carries him and goes for the boat at the shore. Ellie later gets a flash back of Joel of how he died and she couldn't let Abby go. Abby didn't want to fight, she only wanted to take care of the kid. Ellie later threatens to hurt the kid which is unlike Ellie. They start to fight and Ellie has the chance to end it all but chooses not to. She lets Abby go free. Ellie made peace with her demons. She didn't any longer care after all hard work just to kill her. It was not worth it. When you think about it Ellie was in the same position as Abby was before she killed Joel. She probably imagined her of the same situation and chose not to be just like her back then. She chose to be better. Imagining the kid would lose a sister figure. I loved the fact that Ellie let her go. Abby is a good person.
Ellie later returns home with Dina and their baby gone with only Joels guitar left. She's unable to play because of the loss of her two fingers. She leaves the guitar that symbolises that she leaves Joel's memory behind. And she walks away.
People are just too angry to see this. They look at it too simple. This is a complex story. A beautiful story. It wants to teach that there's much more than just killing someone for revenge. That person also has a life and people they care about. It's not so simple. The game wants us to think clear and forgive. For what is right. Not for what would feel right when eventually nothing good will come out of it. It's easy to hate someone. It's harder to forgive someone. Be stronger like Ellie.

    Graphics really good.
    Audio really good.
Gameplay feels like the last of us 1 and that's good
Story is too complex for most people to comprehend. For me it's really good
All the crafting options you get to choose from is really good
New kind of skill trees. Really good
Character story and development. Some too simple and some really good.

An angry 0 would be very emotional. This is supposed to be a story. Just as much if not even more than a game.
Which is why a negative critique is in order. When you consider its prequel.
The last of us 1 was a good story, because it was a story, not just a string of events, that let you be part of it. Let you tag along.
Here you are basically takes by the neck and pushed face first into everything the writer(s) think(thought) you HAVE TO experience. With the dark tones and violence to make up for anything that is acutally engaging.
    And that is just lazy.
With far too many missed opportunities for actual depth.
It really feels like more of a celebration of some suppressed adoration for violence, that the writer(s), than anything else.
Violence turned up to 11. Is this still a game? Should one still be allowed to call it that?

This makes it a very, very uncomfortable experience. In the way it is uncomfortable when somebody who you just got to know, who are drinking a beer with, everything being amicable, suddenly starts to tell you how he wished someone would kill all the...you get my point.

Yes I liked the first game. No I do not recommend to those who are looking to play the sequel. Story-wise.
Because it is a COMPLETELY different kind of experience.

The shooting is passable at best but a bit cumbersome. Over all not much has been improved, you can jump and go prone which can open up new ways of engaging with the world and the AI. As for the enemies, they are not to intelligent. They are easy to fool and don’t react realistically but your mileage may vary. Now as for the story, this is where the game trips over its own two feet and falls flat on its face. The two main characters seem to lose a lot of continuity from the first game to this one. They don’t behave logically as the first game has set them up. A third of the way of the game a character is removed for what seems to be no reason, which sets you on a unsatisfying, and unrewarding quest for revenge. This game being a story driven game, that really hurts the over all appeal of this I.P. The new characters are undeveloped and unlikeable. And in a dark and dystopian setting, there’s really not not to cheer for or get behind. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Have read many many comments on Metacritic which share similar sentiment. I actually agreed completely while reading them but then the approach ND took clicked for me. While not executed well - their whole point with this game was to reinforce in this dystopia there is no good or bad, and that even though we perceive Ellie and Joel to be 'better' than other characters ultimately everyone is just trying to survive the same as them. The love all fans have for Joel is supposed to initially cause outrage when he is killed by this random character and then the actions of Ellie in the pursuit of revenge are slowly supposed to open our eyes to the fact that even the most beloved characters can turn into monsters. I 'think' we are supposed to begin questioning Abby's own past before we flashback to her story and then begin sympathising with her character before the final outcome of the story.

This is poorly done by ND for a number of reasons:
    1. They underestimated how great the bond between most fans and Ellie/Joel was. Further to this they underestimated peoples idea of what Joel and Ellie's characters are. Many people complained about Ellie not being Ellie in this game. Initially I would have agreed but after some thought I now understand ND were trying to show history repeating itself the same way it did for Joel with Sarah's death. The failure with this is there WAS NOT a strong support to replace Ellie, which left the game feeling empty throughout.
    2. They forced political correctness into the equation for no reason. Flavour of the month LGBT characters were so unnecessarily present in this game. Multiple times conversations can be heard from side characters talking about their L/G lovers. I have absolutely no issue with presenting any of the characters in this way but when 90% of the romantic relationships being displayed are non-straight it feels almost like ND were trying (and failing) to be satirical and takes away from the story.
    3. The order of execution was not done correctly, at all. LOU 1 had an absolutely insane beginning to the game. 15-20 minutes of game play then BAM! Huge curveball, Sarah is dead and Joel is crushed. Fade to black and BOOM we are 10 years down the line. By comparison this game gave away the spoiler before it happened without any kind of reasoning as to why it happened. I spent over an hour after Joel was killed wondering when he was going to jump out on Ellie and yell - "Surprise!", only to be sorely disappointed. But that doesn't mean the story was bad, just that it was poorly told. Imagine the same events happening in a different order: Fade in, backstory about whats happened the last few years with Joel and Ellie, Joel and his brother prepare to go on patrol (same as any other day), run into this stranger while on patrol, save her and head to where she has made camp as its only way they'll survive. SURPRISE! She actually came out looking to kill him all along. Now we play out largely the same story from here. Ellie gets in a standoff with this mysterious stranger. Stranger SHARES her story with Ellie while still in standoff. We continue on from there. Maybe leave in the option for Ellie to kill or spare Abby at the end (really depends if a game 3 is being setup or not from ND perspective though). But holy **** how much better would the exact same plot be in this case???
    4. Also: Scrap the Ellie x Dina stuff, scrap the stuff with Abby and Owen. The love stories were both sold so poorly with nowhere near enough buildup (and more importantly, no-one cared anyway). Small references through dialogue could have achieved the exact same effect. This isn't an anti LGBT thing, its anti poor story telling. LOU1 had hints with Joel and Tess that were so much more effective because they were subtle, heck even Ellie with her female friend/crush in the DLC was done better than this - and that was DLC, content deemed not good enough to be in the main game!

Anyone who took the time to read this, much appreciated. Hopefully I've helped others also see the game a little more sympathetically. Sadly the reality is a game with alot of potential, that falls short where it matters most, the story. I gave 6 as I think less than this is an insult to the team of creators of which most (maybe even all) 'tried' to make an amazing sequel but miscalculated slightly. I hope if a 3rd game does come they will return to the storytelling approach from the first game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If one would rate this game a 0, then they must be VERY biased. To undermine the actual effort of those who worked on this game is unthinkable. The graphic is, as are all of ND games, very pretty (even photoreal in some part). The animations are top notch, as well as incredible voice actings. The increadible scenery of Jackson. The great dialogues between characters. The believable characters, even though some might disagrees. The small parts between Joel and Ellie are my favourites.

But the story - man, the story..., how should I say this, left a bad taste in my mouth (not in a positive way, like some other movies, or game's stories...). It's very frustrating to see how Joel would go out like that - not just him, but also a very good character, Jesse. I think people here are too focus on the fact that the character, Abby, is transgendered or some other transphobic and homophobic reasons - I don't care about that.

What I (as a FAN) wanted is a story about Joel or Ellie, because they were the main characters, that the writers and director do them justice, because they are what we were bonded to. We have seen their pain, their struggle and their story and we root for them. If it were some other ways Joel could have died, I would have no problem about it (I already expected him to somehow or someway sacrifice himself). It's just too disrespectful for him as a main character and for us as long time audiences.

About Abby: As I said before, I have NO problem about her. She's a character deserve to live in that world. If that's how ND want this, then it is their choice. I don't think it even felt "forced" for her to be how she is. But I think it felt quite unpleasant playing as her for a large amount of the game. She is the one who killed Joel after all, and I can't connect with her character and personality because of that. The flashback part and the Ending part is the time I would not spend, had I know the plot.

Of course the writers have the right to tell THEIR story and I very much respect that. It's the story they made, they can choose how they end it. But I say they made it quite bad... Ellie loss 2 of her finger, Dina, Joel, her childhood friend and can't play the guitar is the ending nobody wants. Abby killed Joel, Jesse, crippled Tommy and almost killed Dina, yet she gets away with it?. Why do you made this ending? Sure I should be sympathizing with her through her story line, but I didn't. I can't feel anything for her...

I know I write this in the position of a biased fan and I think understand the meaning of the story. Yet it made me feel bad about spending time for such a story and, you know, feel sad...

ALL AND ALL, I think ND made a good game, in graphical and overall technological terms. But the story is not really my cup of bitter tea.

-The story, oh god the story. I don't care if x or y dies, but I'd like to actually feel the death to get invested in the whole revenge thing. Also the ending is unsatisfying and not even in the well-done way, but just kinda "Oh ok then".

To sum it up, for a story-driven game it sucks BAD, but everything is alright to pretty good so if you don't care about story then go ahead, you'll enjoy it. But if you in it for the story turn back now and just keep your head-canon limited to the first game.

Cons: Melee combat is still poor (despite the fact its one of the main methods to deal with the infected in a game with low ammo supplies), The mix of linear and somewhat open areas makes it at times lack direction and bit aimless in that you can roam but there really isn't anything to do except loot and dodge/fight infected, The story as a whole

    Mild spoiler warning!

The Last of Us 2 has a core issue with its narrative.

    Character Development:
This game seemingly lacks any real tangible character development, especially comparing it to the original. I would even argue The Last of Us 1 was not a story of an attempt to cure the infection, now plaguing the world, that was just the motivation that gave impetus to the story to begin, the story is the changing of the dynamic between Joel and Ellie.

Joel being a broken man, twisted by his anger, hatred and sorrow. Unwilling to allow himself to feel again in-case it ends with him getting hurt again.

Ellie the naive child, looking for purpose and guidance by a father figure that she never really had, but in the process of looking for this closeness and companionship she fears that ultimately she will eventually lose it and end up alone again.

The story reflects the change in them as they both embark on their positive character arc, shedding their accepted lies about themselves and the world around them and finding a truth in their time together that gives them both hope and faith.

The Last of Us 2 on other hand is vapid, which is understandable being that it is a revenge story with a negative character arc as Ellie embraces her new internalized lie and seeks to make them pay for what they did, its cliched and lacks any nuance. If that was the intent then Tommy should have accompanied Ellie instead of Dina and the story could unfold as their anger and hatred for the WLF becomes more and more intense until it burns them, they effectively fuel each others hatred until it reaches a climax and they have to face their malice in a healthily or unhealthily way, that could have been compelling.

Instead we get Dina, a likable character but otherwise meaningless to the player, she comes in as the love interest and after 1 drunken kiss and 1 joint + sexual encounter is willing to give up all her friends and life to travel across country with Ellie as if they have some deep meaningful connection. This is even more painful as after they leave the city and head to Seattle the next section of the game throws them both in to an open area where they can talk and Dina expresses a desire to get a farm and settle down and it would be with Ellie.

From the player perspective this is so jarring, 1 kiss, 1 shag and within a couple interactions we are meant to be invested in them settling down and living happily ever after, you can make the argument that they must have spoken more off camera, but if that is the case why should the player care? How do you become invested in something you don't know about?

Frankly the whole Dina+Ellie thing feels forced and I can only assume its to solidify the fact that Ellie is homosexual, which by the way is fine, it was fine in Last of Us 1 and its fine now, but if you want to highlight it so prominently at least write something meaningful.

    Plot:
It feels rushed, messy, it creates motivation without nuance. Frankly if they had kidnapped Joel and taken him back to Seattle and Ellie had to go after him you could have more complex emotions around the possibility of Ellie saving Joel still. Ultimately that would also give Joel, a character that deserved to go out on a high, the chance to have one last heartfelt moment with what was basically his adoptive daughter who he clearly loves.

    Abby:
Don't make me play Abby, from the moment she went out on the walk with Owen and she talked about finding "him" I knew her intentions. Nothing breaks my immersion more then making me do something terrible to a character I care for when I don't want/need to.

Don't get me wrong if I have to put down a beloved character because they've become infected, that's hard but its fitting. Making me take a character I have no connection to and lead her to kill Joel, actually make me work to keep her alive from the infected even though I want her to fail/die is so immersion breaking, I just wanted to hurl her off the cliff or let the infected rip her neck open instead.

My summary is this, beautiful looking and sounding game, if it was the first in the franchise would be incredible but it just doesn't live up to expectations created from the first.

A "story" driven game with shallow 2 dimensional characters and a poor plot.

Wait for it to go on sale.

That is where the good begins and ends. The AI is incredibly dumb on anything except the hardest difficulty, the story is drawn out with the most obvious meaning, and nothing has evolved from the TLoU1. The characters dramatically different and make mistake after mistake through the whole game to the point that it's unnatural. Druckman I think let the TLoU1 get to his head a bit because this game's story constantly tries to come off as clever when in reality its drilling every little thing in for an ending that is both unfulfilling and attempting to be deeper than it actually is.

For those both on Youtube and people from Naughty Dog screaming about the lack of context.. The context makes the leaks that much more worse. If you're going to play something play part 1 and tell yourself that Part 2 is non-canonical. Save yourself the time, irritation, and pain that comes with this game trying to hand fist obvious messages about revenge with bad design and writing. To the outlets giving this game a 10 out 10 who claimed there was some big thought provoking narrative: You're out of your mind. The game should be judged on how it runs, looks, and the story behind it. TLoU2 will take you through 20-30ish similar albeit beautiful environments, deal with an AI that has no depth, and take you down a story that discusses revenge and the cycle of repetition that will leave a person with nothing at the end. I will say there was potential here but the game stops you every 5 seconds per cutscene with gore porn to say "SEE ISN'T THIS BAD? LOOK AT WHAT THE REVENGE AND HATE IS MAKING ME DO!". By the time you get to about 4 hours in, you will feel as though someone is grating the side of your brain with sand paper as it tries to mold you into thinking a certain way. It's divisive in the sense that either one your mind is so shallow that it will appear so deep and thoat provoking or two you find you have a mind of your own and see the game doesn't want you to have your own thoughts on the subject matter it is presenting.

Don't do what I did. I saw the leaks and still made the decision that I needed to see if it was really as bad as the leaks stated. I implore you if you're curious about the TLoU2 to borrow or rent this one. Don't spend $60.00 on this mess and go and buy TLoU1 remastered. See the game that made Druckman great. Not the one that was created from his mental high horse and forgot about what made the original great in the first place.

I love all the flashback and interaction between Joel and Ellie, because these are the characters we've been through in the first game, we already built a connection with these two characters. But at the mid of the game when the game force us to play as Abby. I stopped playing, because I couldn't get through it. I get what the game try to do here, they want us to see things in different angle, put us in her shoes. But I really can't, all I can see is these people done horrible things to someone we love, at that point, I already checked out of the game, I couldn't listen to their dialogue. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm a huge fan of TLOU and the universe created by NaughtyDog. I've been hype for this release since they announced it in 2016 and was really enjoying the game for the first 6-7 hours or so, playing as Ellie primarily and seeing Joel's death was a great way to justify going to Seattle. After this first honeymoon phase though the game got progressively worse for me. Playing as Abby for such a large portion of the game really killed my urge to play. Seeing her perspective of what Ellie was doing was honestly a pretty good idea by NaughtyDog but I think the pure amount of time spent as her really ruined it for me. By the ending Abby had spared Ellie's life twice and I hardly had an urge to kill her anymore. I didn't personally like how Neil forced his SJW agenda into the game but it wasn't a major negative, just something to bring up. This game probably doesn't deserve a 7 at the end of the day but I just love this franchise so much and the game definitely has it's strengths. When major events happened and with Joel's death specifically I really felt emotions for the characters and for an hour or two after his death I wanted to kill them just as badly as Ellie, these emotions fizzled out as the game progressed. The graphics are obviously good and the pure depth of the world was amazing. I enjoyed knowing I could approach encounters however I wanted. If the entire game could've been as good as the first 1/3 this would be a 10/10 game. If I weren't so biased towards loving this world and franchise this game would be a 5 or 6. Expand

No I am not a fan of Joel’s death, it feels so out of character for him to give his name out and trust strangers compared to the first game. Graphics are amazing and I really enjoyed the gameplay, voice acting was alright don’t believe people saying it was terrible when it wasn’t. How ever I did enjoy seeing abbys story arc surprise surprise(sorry I have an open mind). BUT when playing as Abby in the boss fight against Ellie, wtaf??!??! you can’t expect us to want to fight a character we love, so many time during the fight I wouldn’t press square during the QuickTime events because I didn’t want to do anything to Ellie, nor did I try to fight her, I got Abby shot multiple times before realising I have to fight her. Alright I could go on forever about what this game does right and wrong a lot more wrong but this was going to be a 7/10 for me, until the ending, the flashback scene was nice made my eyes tear up but then it cuts back and j ends w her walking off, are ye serious?!? Would have been way better if another 10-20 min was added to see the aftermath of her returning to dina, tommy, JJ and all that but no, hence the 5/10. Would I recommend this game? Poor storyline: you buy the game for the characters you love and end up with Joel being slaughtered in the first hours and with being forced to play (for hours) as his murder, a character you hate. The game tries hard to push you into liking Abby, but the result is instead just annoying. Had to force myself to reach the end, which is also totally disappointing since you don’t even get the revenge you wanted.

Forced **** topics that strikes as exaggerated beyond any Suspension of disbelief. Almost all the main characters are women or asians, whic is fairly unrealistic. Even as the classical huge/strong human enemy they choose a giant fat woman.. it’s very rare to see two men talking with each other in the whole game. White males are killed and replaced with women and asian, the couple Joel + Ellie wasn’t woke enough so was replaced with Abby + Lev. Finally, not to leave any woke topic behind, we have gay characters, trans characters and so forth. Nothing against that in general, but here everything looks out of context and forced, it looks too much. Left Behind was also including such topics but not in this way and indeed got good ratings.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yesterday was completely over - I didn't care about this Abby, I just wanted to kill her and that's all. But no, well, I guess I'll watch the flashbacks and get me back for a moment in the theater for Ellie, and there's a crash. Man, I didn't want to play for Abby so much that 5 jumped her off the roof. Ellie is also "well done" at the very end, she could just get a weapon and kill Abby with Leo, no, she is not so interested. Where's the logic here? And I would still like the player to be given a choice (kill/spare). There is still some illogical - in the theater, if there were no Leo, then Abby would most likely kill Ellie and Dina (which she almost did), here, again, there is no logic, she will, in fact, then become like Joel, depriving all humanity of even a hypothetical chance to heal.

If you take the relationship between Abby and Leo, then it turns out that these are the same Ellie and Joel from the first part, only at the minimals. I think the author wanted to tie the player to Abby in such a way that the player changed his mind about killing her. No, it didn't work. I wanted to kill her anyway.

According to sensations, the game raised the question of why. I didn't feel anything during the game, I knew about Joel before the game was released, so his death was not a surprise. I thought when I finished the game - eh, there is not enough for Abby some local John Marston, if you draw analogies with Rdr 2. There were no much-remembered characters (about Abby's friends - generally silent). Although no, it was interesting what was going on with Tommy.

But technically, the game is done perfectly. My PlayStation 4 Slim gives out enough FPS, thanks to Naughty Dog for the excellent optimization. The game did not seem difficult (played at the middle level), only dogs and stalkers were nervous.

Now, I think to pass the game for the sake of achievements, but I will miss the videos. Sorry for my English.

This is a very high-quality game, which costs all the money, but it is not a masterpiece. As for me due to the approach to the plot, the game is too long. You can't enjoy the characters of the second half of the game, you don't want to follow them, because you already have your favorite characters in this game. Compared to Ellie, mirrored in some scenes, Abby, she's just boring, like the characters next to her. FOR ME, htey are not like an independent part of the conflict, but as specially prescribed for emotions and for bringing the game message and blah blah . Ally and Joel’s interaction is simple and charming, father and child, it works just on a subconscious level. Ally and her girlfriend are also good, but the rest of the characters (Owen, Mel ...), who have no less time on the screen are no so good. The game draws emotions out of you in the same way, so in the end, you don't care about the death of the characters. I don't think J death is a problem of the game, it just causes other emotions, not like the death of the characters of the first part, it has a different way , but the second half just can't make full way, to work to the end.

The Last of Us Part 2 looks very impressive graphically, no surprises there, and has had some fine tuning done for most of the mechanics of the last game although they feel minor at best.

Personally, I enjoyed the gameplay of the first game but If you didn't then you certainly won't enjoy it much more in the sequel.

Most of the voice acting is top notch here and of course so is the game's sound design.

However, that's where my praise ends.

The overall plot, aside from some side arcs here and there, takes some massively disappointing directions and virtually every main character is portrayed in ways that I found either completely irredeemable, pretty uninteresting or just unrealistic given the character development of the first game.

The plot is also so intent on hammering you with its anvilicious point, which is cliche anyway, and unrelentingly bleak tone that even I find it to be an exercise in cinematic masochism.

Not because I can't handle or don't like violence, death or dark stories, just the opposite in fact.

Here it just feels like a pointless depressing chore with no light at the end of the tunnel.

I expect to feel or learn something meaningful but you never do.

The world sucks, people suck and sucky things happen, we all seen that done before.

And YES, there is an unquestionable LGBTQ agenda of sorts inserted into the game and while it’s not necessarily the worst aspect of the game for me, I do think it comes off as fairly obtuse and contrived in the context of this story. I reflexively rolled my eyes more than once truth be told.

However, as a fan of the first installment of the series, the most unforgivable thing the game does is how it goes about bludgeoning the main characters of the original game, in most ways characterization wise but often enough literally.

Its like this game was made to be a spiteful and twisted mockery of everything that was great about the first game but filled with bad writing and subtle "woke" preaching.

While the game is obviously far from the most egregious pile of garbage ever to hit a console... it is a huge misstep and a massive disappointment for me, especially given the masterful presentation and writing of Last of Us part 1.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was a major disappointment. The first TLOU is easily one of the best games I've every played, so naturally when this game was announced it became my most hyped game for the next few years to come. Upon this games release I can honestly say that on the technical side of things, this is dang near a 10/10. Graphically the game is gorgeous, the animations are fantastic and the gameplay is good, although it really doesn't feel that much improved over the first game. However, the story of this game is awful. It feels like a cheap fan fiction that uses shock factor, and forced emotion(killing dogs, even a pregnant woman) for very cheap reactions. The whole idea of playing as Abby for almost half the game was ridiculously stupid. Especially after she brutally murders one of the all time great video game characters, not even 2 hours into the game. I found myself genuinely not caring about any of the new characters throughout the entire game. While I was really upset about Joel's death so early on in this game, I still tried to give it the benefit of the doubt, but the games story and often slow pacing disappointed me over and over and over again. I would NOT recommend buying this game. Expand

I put 13 hours into this game and I couldn't finish it here's my thoughts,
Last of Us is my favorite game and this review is the best review you're gonna get because half of these people are just doing it because it's the trend. Rating this game below a five is a joke and you're just being ridiculous. Let's start with positives, The core game play of Last of Us 2 is phenomenally the developers make there areas with multiple options to conquer there tasks ahead. The developers in this game filled their world with lots of secrets for people who find themselves to either wonder in the vast world of Seattle or people who really like to explore and know naughty dog fills their worlds with items to find. Finding a guitar where elle plays a cover of take on me or finding secret safes where you would have to find clues to find the code made The Last of Us 2 feel rewarding in that aspect. You get to upgrade your guns and find new ones on your continuous journey with also upgrading your skills. Also, the games is very beautiful and feels polished and has it's lovable characters but that is all the positives for this game which is most of the game. Now the biggest negative is the story if you never played or cared for the first game like the critics this would be a 10/10 but for the Users the people who really loved this game seeing a sequel and it's story being so broken and not for filing made everyone very outraged. The Story of The Last of Us 2 isn't bad it's just how they did it. Using characters known by the community to be used for the plot is ok if you do it right but how they did it was disgraceful and just a punch in the face for the core fans. Also elle seems to had have a personality switch which felt off compared to the lovable goof she was in the first game but of course she was also a bad ass. Elle in this game feels like she's very self centered and kinda of a all about what she has to do. This bothered most people because they rushed through the game but if you took time in the game Elle seemed to be the same old Elle through separate optional dialogue. Another main problem is that people play these games for the relationship with Joel and Elle and Joel is not really seen or used in this game how we would've liked to see. My main problem with this game is abby, the problem I have with abby is that naughty dog makes her feel like a McDonalds rip off of elle and I HATE THAT, also after spending so much time going through the three days of Seattle with a character I enjoyed, I have to play as Abby and see her prospective of life and what she did. I just couldn't do it I hate abby's character and think she would've been better if we didn't have to play as her. Overall The Last of US 2 is great with it's core mechanics and if you don't care about story I'd give it a 10/10 I enjoyed the game mechanics that much and the vast world and all the secrets to find. Unfortunately I care about the story and it makes it a 5/10 because Playing as Abby in my opinion is just unbearably difficult and also the absence of the Joel and Elle duo, Which is why people bought and enjoyed the last one, Isn't really utilized here which just makes this game feel so underwhelming.

I though, eh whatever, its just for this bit (boy was I wrong). I enjoyed the stoyy, the revenge that Ellie seeked for Joels brutal murder, yes i was sad and angry Joel was dead, but it's a dark world, he doesnt have plot armor. I loved every second playing as Ellie hunting down the group that was involved. However, forcing me to play as Abby was just a stupid decision. I dont care what agenda you have to show me Abbys side of the story, I played a 14 hour game as Joel, no matter what I see isn't going to make me sympathetic to his killer. Its a stupid and ridiculous choice to do this. It made me want to stop playing the game completely. Honestly, if you're a massive fan of the last of us, dont play this game. Expand

I will only say about the emotions that this game gave. It is not perfect, it has many disadvantages, but it does not deserve such low ratings. I put 10/10 and 0/10. The game is ambiguous. I agree with most of the cons of the game. As my countrymen say-И рыбку съесть, и на хуй сесть.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a strange mix of emotions I have for this game. First off, unbelievable graphics. The settings were terrifying, but eventually became predictable. I literally hated this game at the 2 hour mark. Afterward I made Abby die at least 40 times and debated quitting because I really didn’t care about her or her story. It took sheer will to keep me going. And after playing for a while, the only thing that did was when Ellie and Tommy began showing up and I got to see how strong they both were.

Abby, to me, is a Negan knockoff. Sure, she doesn’t run her mouth like him, but she’s a villain nonetheless that the writer crafted to make them likable later on in the story. I can go into more reasons why I think this but I don’t want to ramble on any more than I already plan to. A lot of the interactions with Abby felt forced and contrived. So many things were unnecessary. Her sympathy for Lev seemed pointless and provided nothing regarding character building. As the story progressed, sure, I learned about Lev, learned about his issues with his family. It all felt very cliche, a weak attempt to build conflict where there would otherwise be none. Perhaps the video game industry is still trying to figure out the best way to portray these characters, but If Lev was approached from a place of strength, rather than pity it would have done Lev’s character justice, and given the player a reason to be proud of Lev’s strength and what he’s going through. It’s my opinion that lots of “telling“ and not enough “showing” took place with this character, and that’s a shame, because there was lots of room for development there. Fighting through Lev’s town was pretty cool, though. Otherwise, I can’t blame ND for taking the direction they did with the ending. The reason for Ellie going after Abby and giving up her idyllic life with Dina and JJ felt laughable. I was literally saying out loud at 2am “WTF” are you thinking? But I followed Ellie back into the wild. I thoroughly enjoyed playing through the ending encounters. Lots of action. The group at the end were some messed up people, but we didn’t learn much about them. The ending fight seemed to be a last desperate attempt for closure. I didn’t want to fight Abby, but like Ellie, I didn’t want to let her just walk away, either. Also, I think the reason why Ellie let Abby go is different from others. When Abby bit Ellie’s fingers off, Ellie saw Joel for a split second. He was playing the guitar. We later see a heart wrenching scene and we know where it comes from. Playing guitar was Ellie’s last real connection to Joel, who was more of a father than anyone else, who loved her unconditionally, and supported her 100%. That vision reminded her maybe when the felt the pain of those bleeding stumps in that water. She is now truly empty. There is nothing left, no point. Ellie trying to play guitar with her missing fingers (and ND shamelessly forcing you to do it) is her closure. Losing what life she had is just something else to pile onto her misery. I was truly surprised when I saw her out the window walking away and not shooting herself. Either way... what a miserable ending for a character that I truly love. People will say it’s just a game, and so did Neil in a tweet. No, it’s not. ND knew what they created back in 2013. Something real that struck chords with so many players. The fact that ND decides to slap us in the face in this installment was their choice, and their right. Like many, many others, I enjoyed and hated this game at the same time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A fully substantiated and considered assessment of the game in my opinion is 8/
    10. Let's start with the good. Of course, decent graphics and gameplay leave a good impression. The emotions of the heroes, fear, anger, love and despair are perfectly conveyed. The plot construction is excellent: first you play as Ally and see everything from her side. But later, playing as Abby, you rethink every event, think of every person that killed and feel the story from a different angle. In general, the plot can not be called bad, but from my point of view this is the biggest disappointment. First of all, this is disappointment in Ally, from which the developers made a dumb machine for revenge, which does not see life. Of course, the murder of Joyle was a terrible blow and trauma for her life, but even after revenge, the murder of all friends and relatives of Abby and after Abby saved her life twice - Ellie wants to find her in order to save and then kill. . (???). At the same time, in contrast, it is clear that Abby, despite everything, retains humanity in herself, despite the fact that she also has a childhood trauma from killing her father. Sparing the enemy’s life and forgiving twice is noble. Ally, on the contrary, is curbed by such cruelty that she is ready to kill innocent people and leave everything for revenge. In the end, you understand very well that Ally has everything - her beloved nearby, a child, a house, and it would seem that what else is needed? But she refuses all this for revenge to a man who has so lost everything. Abby lost all the drears, she had no one left, but she forgave Ellie and only this can bring peace. Forgiveness, not revenge. Ally, thanks to her stupidity, loses everything - but for what? Instead of forgetting, no matter how painful, Ellie loses both his family and love, and even the last thing left of Joyle - playing the guitar. And now, at the end of the journey, she was left with nothing because of a thirst for revenge. The plot is good, but it's a shame that the girl from the first part made a brainless obsessed woman. We all loved this hero so much, but it turned out that Ellie really did not become anything useful in this life. And after the ending you think: “And really, it would be better if it was used for a vaccine and it could be useful, because throughout her life she only did that she killed so many people, brought so much pain and remained useless and with nothing.".

But the story of this game has broken my heart. I really like the story of this game , the connection between the characters . I understand why there is a lot of hate to this game , but if we close eyes on it , I wouldnt say that the game will be much more better . I understand the main message from Neil Druckmann ,about all this moral stuff and how your desire to revenge can be fatal for you. But we were waiting for this game for 7 years ,we wanted to see another story ,this main characters are alive , both of them. I cant understand Abby's actions. You start the game with killing of the main character. You are starting to hate Abby and you dont want to know her story and why she decided to do it.

We all see the LGBT advocacy , this is why this game loses a few points instantly. I dont care about this stuff ,but in the game where we see an inflated woman , its **** my friends . In this game women better than men everywhere . I think if this game hadnt got a LGBT advocacy it would be much more better , the characters of this game wouldnt be looking like this one. Abby would looking pretty much better and more beautiful.

I understand players reaction on this game. I wanted to see another story , this game is too violent.

Frankly , I like this game , but it could be much more better. There are some reasons why I give to this game not 10/10

On the one hand, great graphics, the best character animations I've seen and quite good (Yes, even with Joel's death) first part of the game. On the other hand, everything that happens in the second part of the game is a failure. No matter how scriptwriters try to justify Abby's actions (especially compared to Ellie's), they failed. The story of the Lev/Lily and Yara is just a sjw joke. But still, I liked the ending that everyone hates so much. Of course, scriptwriters could have been more talented in explaining that violence only leads to violence. The strength and weakness of this game is it's story and how it goes about telling it. The slave brains who hate it because of the spoiler that I am sure everyone knows, the early death. They are giving the low grade because of that, and how significant the game has changed.

It is more than just a game, it is a very immersive game with lots of character building. That is also the downfall. It isn't like the first, it is rarely run and gun, you spend the majority of the time crouched and looting, then to all of the sudden be dropped into a situation where you have been careful until the developers make you go through some hole in the wall or down an embankment where you have no place to return and then thrown into a fight where most of your resources you painstakingly gathered for is now gone. Secondly, bring your phone because this game is cut scene to death, so much so that you have to take part in playable cut screens where, if you don't care to get to know the characters and just want to finish, this is frustrating and annoying. Downside is, this is how you care about the characters, and if you don't then you miss the entire point of the game.

Plus side, controls are great, new infected are great, the ai is a bit smarter when it comes to chasing you down but dumb as a brick when they find a body and you are nearby. The environments are astonishing, one of the best out there, small things you might miss with sound from the tv not headphones and you will miss, worth investing in headphones for that reason.

In the end, the story basically tries to tell you an eye for an eye leaves the world blind. If life gives you a second chance don't waste it. The apocalypse, no one is safe, not even your hero because in the end, everyone dies. The end though being, for the characters, do you want to spend your time seeking revenge when in the end no one wins, or move on with your life to make the best of it.

I will and do replay part 1, I will not replay part 2 simply because of the time invested in cut scenes. If you want a cookie cutter of part 1 skip, if you want to enjoy a story, a slow long drag you feet story, then this is the one for you.

As for the story: it's quite a mess. there is an attempt to deconstruct the characters as violent agents in a violent world, but that message is ruined by constant soap opera level drama, character decisions that make absolutely no sense, a character arc that adds nothing to the themes the game works with, new characters that are nowhere near as interesting as for example Bill or Henry & Sam from the first game. Plus, a lot of reliance on shock value and not actual emotion, which makes the game feel more edgy than gritty and dark. The ending does deliver the overall message of the game effectively, but it's hurt by the fact that most of the game does not properly build-up for this climax, something the first one masterfully delivered on. Overall, very disappointed, and Naughty Dog should really think about the direction they wish to go, cause I'm not going with them.

    Pros:
    - Presentation is really, really great
    - Violence is (most of the time) used in an effective way
    - Some really atmospheric setpieces

    Cons:
    - New characters are mostly uninteresting
    - Nonsensical plot points
    - The game drags by the end (Too long for its own good)
    - Shock value over actual emotion

Expand

The game is amazing on the gameplay.; best graphics I have seen in this generation, although the story is good, it does not live up to the last of us part 1, and many may hate the approach naughty dog took, but me personally I didn’t mind it that much

I cannot even describe how much I am disappointed by this game. Graphics are excellent but the story has no soul, no meaning. I loved the first one but this one left me empty. Ellie's character arc is horrible. I give a 6 just for the incredible graphics and animations.

Honestly play the game and form your own opinion. Had a lot of fun playing, gameplay hasnt changed much but it works, some of the story doesn't. Looks great, phenomenal score, and gameplay. I'm hoping they bring back factions, would even increase my score. Screw the haters.

And yes, I am with the Google translator since I am from Argentina, buy the game at 60 Usd which is a lot of money here, but I repeat I am a fan. I hope you read this Expand

First of all this game wasn't 9 or 10 out of 10 game for me, it's far from masterpiece.
Positive thing is Gameplay and Visual are great, some might say it's pretty much like the first game but I still enjoy it. I do love the story that game want to tell us and I think if done right, it would elevate this game so much more than it is right now.

But again the biggest flaws of this game for me is how they choose to present the story. If they do it right I would might fond Abby's gameplay more enjoyable but with the way they chose, it didn't. I found it hard to play as a character that were present to us as a bad guy with the hated feeling toward the character. I didn't want to play as her, I want her died I understand her story but how they told her story felt like an excuse than storytelling. If they were to build us some relationship with her before "The Golf Club Scene" it probably help this game more.

Also with the ending. I would say I saw that coming but again, I didn't feel any build up or anything that make this ending believable. it felt like this story have no payoff and all those journey was for nothing. In the end the storytelling and ending are tow things that drag this game down a lot since it's a story driven game.

This game is not garbage but also not a masterpiece.

I personally enjoyed the game for what it was, there were many things that could have been approved and the ending for me was very bitter-sweet, I thought the charcters were okay besides one and if you did avoid the leaks I would say you can find enjoyment out of this game, I personally can't wait to see what they do with the story aif they are to make a part 3

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have played and beaten The Last of Us Part 2 twice now. I can say that the game is not a 10/10 or 100/100, which some critics are giving it. Nor is the game a 0/10 or 0/100, as some angry fans have been posting. This game has flaws and imperfections, while at the same time having its merits.

    Overall 6.5
The game is beautiful graphicly speaking. There should be no arguing this. I spent a fair amount of time enjoying the world. Some of the scenes were amazing, especially some of the ones around sunset. I found myself going into photo mode to take some pictures.

GRAPHICS: The game is easily a 9/10, maybe even a 9.5/10

The gameplay was fun while having its share of bugs and repetitiveness. One such bug happened when the character grabs someone and try to move them to a place where NPC would not easily spot their bodies. The game would often cause Elly or Abby to spin around in circles. Causing my sense of direction to be thrown off so that one it stopped spinning them around. I would either run into the enemy or get spotted, becoming an annoyance. Then there was the repetitiveness of mashing square for almost everything. They could of at least gave the players some other buttons to change it up.

GAMEPLAY: For all of this, I am giving the game a 6/10 for gameplay.

The Last of Us Part 2's story was the biggest issue for the game. The first game set up these characters and their personalities. In the first game, Joel was a survivor who did not trust people until they earned it. His experiences surviving in his apocalyptic world taught him. People could not be trusted. In a scene from the first game, Joel runs over someone. That seemed to be in trouble and seeking help all because of his distrust for people he did not know. Throughout the first game, he teaches Ellie how to survive and be leary of others.

    Spoilers

Then in The Last of Us Part 2, Joel is killed for trusting Abby and her group. I believe this would have never happened. As I feel Joel would have taken her back to her group and most likely left her outside the gate. Then head off to find shelter elsewhere from the storm. Other then Joel's death is out of character for him. I feel they made a huge mistake killing him before making us play as Abby. I know that I hated having to play her and wanted her dead.

Had the first part of the game started with Abby's story allowing us to see why she hated Joel and wanted him dead. Then play some of her struggle to find Joel. The player could have gotten to know Abby as a character. Even dare I say like the character and her friends to help the player to understand and accept that she kills Joel later on in the game.

As it is now, the story is a complete mess. With Abby killing Joel, Ellie going after Abby's friends to find Abby and killing them for their involvement in Joel's death. Leading to Ellie's second run-in with Abby, but before we get to play out that encounter. The player switches to Abby, playing her story up to and through the confrontation with Ellie. Now the player steps back into the shoes of Ellie, who is living with her lover Dena. Ellie suffers from PTSD and is having a hard time dealing with the fact that Abby is still out there. Ellie packs some things in the middle of the night after receiving news on where Abby is from Tommy. Dena confronts Ellie and pleads with her to forget about Abby. When Ellie tells her she can't and goes to leave. Dena says she won't be here when she gets back.

Ellie tracks down Abby, and they have a final battle, but instead of killing Abby. Ellie lets her walk away. So in this mess up story, Abby gets to walk away with the loss of a few friends but otherwise has a somewhat hopeful future. While Ellie, the character that everyone cares about, lost everything. She loses her father figure, Joel. She loses her friend Jessi. She loses her lover, Dena. She even loses her ability to play her guitar. What for Revenge that she didn't even get because she lets Abby walk.

STORY 4/10 it had potential had they changed and done some things differently.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
