The graphics are great, though. My biggest disappointment is the way Naughty Dog manipulated the trailers to make customers think they were getting a game with the same main characters as the first game. Not so. You really have to abandon that hope to enjoy this game. I gave it a 5 because, while it is a pleasantly playable linear game, it isn't the "masterpiece" advertised by gaming journalists. The 10/10 reviews are not realistic. Expand

Right.....Well naughtydog devs have done a bad job playing as the person that kills Joel is an awful idea I understand playing Abby up until they get to the cabin where Joel dies but after that are we supposed to feel sorry for Abby and what's shes gone through if so I don't think many people will if even any, I heavily disliked the ending they could have done so much better Yes having them fight at the end is good but it should have been very different For instance Instead of showing Joel beaten and dead they should have showed him playing the guitar and that is what should have made Ellie fight and every so often a quick little flash of Joel beaten and dead would have been much better it would have driven Ellie into fighting harder and eventually killing Abby and letting Ellie finally be at rest. Then it should have shown Ellie going back to Jackson and telling Tommy what she has done and them reminiscing there times with Joel. I also don't care for the fact they make Ellie a lesbian it makes no difference to me I couldn't care less about it but I don't think they should have highlighted it they way they did to get on the good side of the media Wich clearly didn't work and it's totally out of character Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After finishing this game and having some time to think about it, I overall liked this game, but I’m very disappointed with the direction they went with. I hesitatingly read the leaks when they came out thinking it would save me 70 bucks but in the end I just had to play it to make my own opinion. Everything with Joel and Ellie was really really great, especially the opening of the game. Even though Joel’s death was horrific and some perceive it to be disrespectful, I’m back and forth on where I stand on that, it was a good motivation for Ellie and even though Joel was absent his presence was always felt. Tommy was really great here too. The side characters were ok, I liked Jesse and Dinah and lev. But the reason I’m giving the game a 6 is because of the Abby portion of the game. It was so goddamn boring, having to play through those 3 days again as a character that is very unlikable. I understand that the hame was trying to make you see her perspective but I just felt nothing. Those 10+ hours really dragged and by that point I was bored with the repetitive combat situations. But then after that part of the game when you get back to Ellie was really good. The ending scene with Joel was very emotional and the last scene was really sad. I kind of understand why Ellie let Abby go but at the same time I really wanted revenge and kill her. Overall, I enjoyed the Ellie parts of the game but I really didn’t like the Abby hours. Also the graphics and gameplay were amazing, even though combat got a little repetitive towards the end. Expand

If you love the first one, you will like this - however it's a 1 and done and I won't replay it as the story has no replay ability.

I loved the first one and was going into this unsure - the gameplay is fun, the graphics are good and the sound is good.

The story is not good - I ended up skipping cut scenes as the story didn't make sense and chapter 6/7 dragged on far too much.

I do not believe this game deserves a review in the red. The gameplay isn't groundbreaking, but it's solid enough for anyone to enjoy. You'll want to keep playing just for the opportunity to marvel at the scenery. There's very few games that can compete with the authentic world ND has created. The story was a massive disappointment. If you loved Ellie's witty comments and playful demeanor then this game will shock you with the utterly dull and boring person Ellie has become, and to make matters even worse, Dina, Ellie's girlfriend, is quite possibly the worst character ND has ever created. She adds nothing of value outside of being Ellie's love interest, which I don't even buy. There's no chemistry between the two and seem to only be together because the writers decided they would be. Even with the undeserved fate of Joel...I could have forgiven the story to an extent if they would have given us the old ellie and an equally entertaining female companion as her love interest, but no, you're left with two mediocre characters to listen to for half the game. Abby is an odd character to add to the cast. She seems to have found a stash of dianabol and hgh that she's hogging all to herself (Not cool) Putting aside the fact that abby is anatomically built like an NFL athlete and no one questions it. She simply adds to the ever-growing cast of poorly written characters this game has to offer, however her and Lev make one of the only interesting duos throughout the entire game so I suppose that worth something. Out of all the characters in the game after Joel's exit, Owen and Tommy are the only truly likeable characters, but their parts in the game are brief. The magic that made the first game a narrative masterpiece is long-gone. You are given a couple of flashbacks that for a few fleeting moments make you actually feel something...feel the magic that captivated you in the first offering, but it does little to change your feelings for the game we were actually given, outside of letting your imagination run wild with what could have been. Overall this game has all the potential in the world, but it is sunk on the back of a mediocre story, poorly written characters, and expectations coming off the first game. I dont think the game is awful and I believe it's definitely worth a playthrough for everyone, but not for the price tag of $60. This game will leave you disappointed, therefore I'd suggest waiting until a sale then give it a try and enjoy the phenomenal graphics, atmosphere, and visuals. I'd give the game a solid 75/100. Its definitely not great and definitely not a masterpiece that the biased critics are awarding it. You won't crave to see what happens the next cutscene like the first, but you'll enjoy the gameplay if you can look past the story's shortcomings. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: Astonishing visuals. Incredibly impressive graphics to the point that I personally am surprised it can even run on a PlayStation 4. Also applies to the animations; very realistic and expressive.
Sound Design: Equally as impressive as the visual fidelity of the game. The age and imperfect condition of the weapons are both seen and heard in the rusted chambers of guns, specifically the rifle.

    Cons:
Story & Characters: The first few hours are alright. While Joel does get killed by vengeful ex-Fireflies, his character arc was over and he had served his purpose. From then on, however, the story actively pursues the objective of making the player miserable. The decent gameplay is marred entirely by being forced to play as a despicable character - Joel's remorseless killer - for half of the game and leaves the player either begging for the 10+ hour Abby section to end, or they just quit the game entirely.

Summary: Quality graphics can only go so far when the story you're playing is trying to depress you. Every hint of happiness is crushed sooner or later, and reflects well Naughty Dog's mantra of "we don't use the word 'fun.'" Truly, if it weren't for the okay Ellie sections nearer to the start and the wonderful visuals, this game would have a rock bottom score from me.

This game is not the worst, but it's not the best. The story had a lot of potential, but ended up spiraling down in quality as it progressed. About three-fourths of the way through the game and ask myself "why?". It felt like lazy writing and things happen "just cause". I would overall rate the story a 3/10.
Next is gameplay, which didn't change much from the first TLOU. The game feels like a walking simulator with occasional button mashing and shooting. I did like the diversity of character styles, but the combat system left much to be desired. After a 7 year wait for this game, I feel that it lacked substantial change and did not separate itself from the original style. Overall, I would give Gameplay a 3/10. Lastly, visuals and eye candy. This game is substantially better looking than the original. Lots of great views and settings that show how much care went into the visual development. Occasionally the facial expressions of characters are a little unsettling and awkward to look at, but it is new tech, so we won't put too much of a penalty for it. Overall, visuals sit at a very nice 9/10!

Final average score puts this game at a ⁵/10. I wouldn't recommend buying it unless you are okay with drawn out walking segments, lackluster combat, and a story that doesn't make much sense.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The most sad thing about this game is the fact that neil druckmann didn't understand **** from the first game. Joel and tommy aren't the type to just trust strangers. His excuse was that age made them loose their guard? Fk outta here. I'm ok with joel dying, he had to pay for his actions but this was poorly executed and Manny, the guy that spits and calls him a "pendejo" doesn't help. Then you have to spend hours playing with muscle hulk killing innocent people, tribes, etc. And naughty tries to make you feel sorry for her because she saves 2 kids and loves dogs? Due to the way Joel's death was executed makes this game hard to play knowing that it will only go down hill. Abbs witnesses her own people die but doesn't say a single word. All the characters are easily forgotten, ignored or never brought up again. It feels like they weren't nothing but fillers/puppets. With Ellie, she gets PTSD due to watching joel getting killed but during her killing spree, not once did she have a PTSD attack or episode. WTF neil, do you not know **** about PTSD? Once again Joel gets disrespected and Ellie kills one of abbs friends in the same way joel was killed but not once did she have a PTSD episode. Ellie only feels disgust after killing some individuals such as Mel (Mel was pregnan and Ellie found out) and...Oh that's right, the other characters don't matter. Anyways, the only two characters that were interesting were the 2 tribal kids that abbs saved because she loves kids (but is still a serial murderer psychopath). Thier their stories characters are amazing and so is thier back story. That's the kind of Naughty Dog I like to see but that's about it lol. The ending was upsetting due to Ellie Freeing Abs and Levs but then wants to fight abs? Ellie is about to end abs but gets a Flash of Joel which ultimately means that Abs is free to leave with Lev, alive. During the fight, Ellie got 2 of her fingers bitten off, Jo was Killed, Dina her Love was killed as well as thier child, Jesse her best friend was killed, abd Tommy Joel's brother was almost taken from her. Ellie Loses everything, she's dead inside at the end while Abs gets Lev and didn't give a single **** about her friends that died? This game had to many holes, storytelling was lazy as fk and theme is not good lol. You stripped the theme out of all it's meaning.

Gameplay: 6/10 (same **** from LOUS, $60 is not worth jumping and prone Neil)
Graphics: 8/10 (beautiful atmosphere but is not open as it Bi-linear to the **** physics were cool, light was alright, top Naughty Dog as always)
Story: 5/10 (Not a good story, easily one of Naught's worst. Conflicting themes, and juxtapositios in the environment. Too any holes in the stroy and dog**** execution)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is not as terrible as people make it seem.
For me it would be around 7.5 or so. It did some things right but also some things terrible.

First some cons then pros and lastly some side things.

    Cons:
There are some poor story part of the game.
I personally dislike that I had to play as the character Abby and therefor rushed through that part.
A bit too much focus on Abbys life, may be so people would sympatise with her or what ever. But really there has been no reason for all her flashbacks, She was an unlikeable character, bland character and pretty much just a waste of time to focus on her story.
    Few glitches and bugs.
Bit too much "smash square" stuff like that.

    Pros:
Visually Naughty Dog did a great work with the game.
The gameplay may not be that whole advanced but pretty straight forward.
There are good parts were you can explore a lot of areas, building and shops which is really good.
Variety of weaponry is good, maybe there could have been a bit more upgrades into some of the weapons.
The small details in both animations, world design and so on are really good. Some of them are subtle but they make it more immersive.

    Both good and bad:
Some of the development with Ellie is done in a good way, other is not. The whole revenge thing is a feeling that most would be able to get. Also there are some old sayings "an eye for an eye makes the world blind" this is displayed well in the story were Ellie makes some poor decisions because she is blinded by the revenge.
The story wasn't 100% terrible but not that great either.

The Last of Us 2 could have been some kind of bigger expansion instead of a whole new game. There was a bit too much filler content.

The voice acting and the music ( when Joel and Ellie play the guitar ), is just beutiful i love it, it
    warms my heart! 10 / 10

The animations and facial animations are just perfect, im glad that i waited 7 years to see that "next gen". 9.5 / 10

The combat is meh ok its not bad but its not great. I would rate the combat a 5 / 10.

I will not even talk about the story because its just depressing...
I will give it a 4 out of 10 just because they made it and tried to make it good. F

Don't even get me started on the environment! Its so beutiful and good made! ( Its really like a

Overall the game is far from bad but even more far from "The Last of Us 2" that we expected.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The visuals and graphics of the game were unreal it has to be one of the best looking games ever. The gameplay was what you would expect after playing the first game. What really let the game down was the overall story Joel’s death was completely understandable however it was the disrespectful way in how they had Joel die is what has angered me and the people as they absolutely ruined a beloved character through having him make a stupid decision which was so out of his character which just doesn’t add up. The ending was also extremely underwhelming as Ellie was settled a year later with her family to then force herself to go back for vengeance to then not even fulfil the vengeance she sought. The game made a huge mistake in the layout of the story as they made it almost impossible to have any sympathy for Abby due to the fact she was a random character who we knew nothing about who killed the most loved character ever introduced to the franchise. There is more negatives which I will not go into however Overall In my opinion the game is just completely demoralising ruining the mood for the player at any possible chance it gets as it just sought to portray the message of revenge being bad for anyone involved. It completely ruined the characters I fell in love with in the first game by completely changing their personality and characteristics that they had in the first game. I feel a six is justified due to the beauty of the game alone as you can see the amount of effort put into the visuals I just wish I could say the same for the effort put into the story. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us 2 is, in my opinion, getting unfair amounts of hate for the story. Some people are really stubborn about hating Abby, but they're missing the point of the game. I'd give the game an 8 out of 10, but they pulled a bait and switch with Jesse and Joel in the trailer. Otherwise, I think this is a great successor to the first game. The game represents LGBT characters in a way that doesn't demonise or stereotype them. It isn't forced down your throat either. Trans people exist. Gay people exist. The game shows that quite well. People who are, understandably, upset about the death of Joel need to understand one thing: Joel was a villain. That doesn't mean he isn't likeable, but he is essentially a serial killer. He massacred an entire building's worth of innocent people to save one person's life, all so he could selfishly have the daughter he lost. That makes him human. Just like how Abby murdered Joel in revenge. That makes them human. Naughty Dog made some interesting choices with the story. I believe that the Abby playthrough should have come first and then have her murder Joel, rather than have her kill Joel, have Ellie go after her in revenge, and have them kill Jesse too. The story is realistic. If I was in Abby's position I 100% would do the exact same thing. A lot of people would. Abby is a likeable character, it's just a shame ND decided to give them such an awful first impression. Graphics: 10/10

The design of the game tries so hard to make you feel certain things or force you to see different points of view ultimately fails which is what turns most gamers away. The chemistry and bond between certain characters feels flat, awkward and unnatural again. Despite the things that went wrong in terms of the narrative, there's a lot of things the game does right that would wouldn't expect from other than Naughty Dog; graphics are stunning, many of my friends who are hardcore pc gamers say that this is one of the most beautiful looking games they've seen. AI is massively improved from the first. Level design is amazing. Sound effects and music is perfect. Combat has evolved massively from the first although can feel repetitive at times. While still a linear experience, areas are much broader and there's so much to see and explore that it can feel overwhelming at times. Like I said the game does a lot of things right as Naughty Dog typically are good at making games, however the narrative and pacing of the game really let it down particular with its anticlimax ending where it could of easily made up for past mistakes. It would be unfair to the devs who worked hard on this for so long and as I said putting the story aside this game is amazing but unfortunately falls short of that so therefore a 7/10 (average) is a perfectly fair score. Technical marvel and groundbreaking graphics. The story on it’s own could have been decent, however, being a successor to the 2013 masterpiece makes it pure nonsensical trash that feels like trolling more than a continuation to the epic journey from the first part. I recommend that you buy it only when the price goes down especially if you enjoyed the gameplay from the original.

I think the direction and the narrative focus of the game didn't make sense in regards to the characters, especially where they were at present in their respective timelines. Joel deserved a better end than he got and the direction they decided to go with would have made more sense later in the franchise. Instead you are left with something that feels rushed and not very well thought or fleshed out. I understand what they are trying to get across and the message they are trying to communicate and I think it's a great message by the way, however it just feel the delivery of it was poorly executed and delivered. What I did like was the game play and graphics and also the flashback of the relationship between Ellie and Joel play out over the 5 years at Jacksonville. Overall an okay game but not a masterpiece by any stretch. I expected better. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just finished this game, and this may have some minor spoilers in it.

To start, the original Last of Us was one of my favorite games of all time. I replayed the game a couple weeks before Part II came out so it'd be fresh. I highly recommend doing that.

Let's talk about what this game does well. First, I think the story as a whole was pretty good. Some people would say that the story-telling was poorly done, but I think it was fine. The story is told in a non-linear fashion, but I generally didn't have a problem piecing things together. Wasn't perfect, but I'll get more into that later. Overall, I'd give the story itself an 8/10.

Another thing the game does well is the gameplay. Besides the larger world with more parts for exploration of supplies and collectibles, the gameplay, especially that of the combat system, was mostly the same as the original game. The game also adds the ability to jump and climb up ropes, which adds more verticality to the game than the original had. I would give the gameplay an 9/10.

Now let's talk about what the game doesn't do well. First, I felt the pacing was very poorly done. The game is 25 hours long, but it felt way longer than that. After the halfway point, it started to feel like a never-ending slog. Once I got to the main Abby portion, the story had answered most of the main questions I had early on, so I didn't feel like the Abby portion added much to the story. I didn't really care for Abby that much, probably because she killed Joel at the beginning. Seeing Abby do that created such hard feelings against her that even seeing her side of things in nauseating detail wasn't enough to overcome that. As a result, you end up being forced to play as a character you don't like for 12 hours. Had the game had her kill Joel at a point in the game after we had seen her story, we may have empathized with her more. Nonetheless, it felt like parts of the game were way too drawn out, such that in the second half of the game, I felt myself just wanting to get to where I needed to go to finish the game... only to run into yet another group of enemies. It started making the gameplay and combat feel repetitive and stale. I'd give pacing a 2/10.

The second thing that could've done better is balance. I played the game on moderate difficulty. Played Part 1 on hard. I'd give the first game a 10/10 in balance. Perhaps this was intentional, but this game was much harder to stealth than the first installation. Maybe that was the game's way of forcing the violence onto you. The enemy placement was such that many times, it was nearly impossible to stealth kill one enemy without another seeing you and triggering an all out gun fight. To add to that, I felt that the raw number of enemies per encounter was more, such that many times I felt that there were simply too many enemies. I felt far too often that the game threw these giant hordes of enemies without giving you a reasonable way of avoiding them or stealth killing most of them. Consequently, each enemy encounter was far more exhausting than enemy encounters in the first game. These encounters quickly made me feel burnt out from the combat which was only exacerbated by the poor pacing of the game and the annoyance of running into yet another giant horde of enemies. It quickly felt like many enemy hordes were there only to extend the length of the game and the game's content. The spacing of enemy encounters felt poorly done too - sometimes there would be long stretches without enemies (which I'm not complaining about), or you'd run into a giant horde right after clearing another giant horde. I understand that Naughty Dog was trying to create an over-the-top, violent experience, but it's not fair to ask players to go through that, AND have an overly long experience on top of that. I'd give balance a 3/10.

Overall, this game had the potential to be a 9/10. Maybe even a 9.5/10. The story I felt was good enough for that to happen. But the pacing and balance issues were too much to overlook in my case, so I'd give this game 6.5/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What can I say? Its a really good game. Aside from the mediocre story and the forced SJW propaganda, I think Neil Druckman and his team really deserve respect in creating this games environments and enemies. I'll give the story a 5 out of 10 purely for the fact that it is bland, in my opinion, and Joel's death was not given any proper context, and happened too early in the game. Ellie being a senseless killer was also an off-putting thing about the story. There is no humor or wit in this game like the first. Abby was not a bad character, despite the leaks and what she did to Joel. However, she should have gotten her own game instead of being forced into this one. My biggest gripe with the story is the forced SJW propaganda. It seems that the writers chose to tell us that Ellie is a lesbian every five minutes in the game. It got annoying after a point and I eventually lost interest in the story after about an hour or so. The new characters are bland, and I didn't like the character of Dina. She just seemed an odd choice for the game and the dialog between her and Ellie felt unnatural, forced and borderline uncomfortable sometimes. Also, most new and old characters are under utilized. However, The environment is a solid 10 out of 10. It is absolutely gorgeous, and Seattle has got to be one of the best looking environments in any video game up to this point. The enemy factions are also a solid 10 out of 10. The returning infected never ceased to make my toes curl and my heart race, and the two warring factions in the game, the WLF and the Seraphites are well implemented and deserving of the coolest enemies award, if ever there was such an award. The militaristic nature of the WLF combined with the silent, eerie way the Seraphites conduct their war makes for some epic, heart racing moments in the game. Whoever conceived the idea for the WLF and the Seraphites is really good at their job and deserves a promotion. In closing, I cannot fault the game for a few bland story moments and aspects. It's still a brilliant game if you like horror survival games, and I would recommend it to anyone interested. Expand

Firstly, this game is not bad in the sense of DMC2 being bad. The gameplay is well done and does feel like an improvement from the OG, though that does come with its own problems of feeling too similar to the OG. But this is a good game and I recommend it to those who like exploration with a few sections of action. The visuals, the environmental and character designs, the sound design within the environments and the MUSIC are all fantastic.

But now, the story. Without spoilers, it’s a mess, not just in the themes it’s trying to tackle but also how the world’s logic works. Many of the plot points in the original title have either been forgotten or diminished in importance and many of the new characters pretty much run the show without really earning it. While I do find some of the new world building to be interesting, the methods in which we explore them feel hollow and less earnest than the original. I loved the original’s environmental storytelling and how some of the subtle elements provided us a good look into the apocalypse we only caught a glimpse. However, the sequel repeats this formula without much changes nor improvements aside from minor additions like the hunter dogs and new factions to face off. All in all, it doesn’t feel like a Part 2 but more as a Part 1 companion piece that fills in the gaps without interfering the main narrative.

In saying that, I do have to give credit to the voice actors for they all gave their best performances. While I don’t like the writing for most characters, their voices and performances are fantastic and I buy their emotions. Special shout-out to Laura Bailey as Abby because she was amazing as an antagonist and as a somewhat relatable character. If it wasn’t for those performances, I would not have cared for the story or the cast.

Finally, I have to admit that The Last Of Us Part 2 was a solid game with a weak story. Somewhat disappointing after the original but it does have some shining moments here and there. Still, if you weren’t a fan of the original game, I don’t think you’ll change your mind.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of us part 2 is a decent sequel to the first game but falls short in many aspects. Those aspects unfortunately being story related. No doubt the gameplay is fantastic, the atmosphere is amazing, the scenery and graphics are incredible but the story made no sense to me at times. I enjoyed most moments in the game but the abby sections that you are forced to play about 15 hours into the game were really bad. The reason why they were really bad was because after Joel's death you're forced to play and feel empathy for the killer. I didn't like abby one bit. I didn't feel sorry for her considering she brutally murdered joel and tortured him in such a way that it was hard to watch. The narrative for the last of us part 2 is revenge and by the end of the game when you finally catch up to abby and are ready to kill her you let her go. While i can understand this, it completely contradicts what the entire game is about and leaves a bad taste in your mouth. At least Ellie does survive at the end though. That was probably one of the most relieving moments of the game. Overall I'd say fantastic gameplay, graphics and scenery but poorly executed story and for Abby's section poor character development. Oh and the Rat King section made me poop my pants. Expand

    Reception

Not an ideal story for a game, given the public's interaction with the piece, but could see it in a book or a TV show. It delivers on it's purpose, the message that vengeance is bad, but it's the wrong universe given the setup from the last game. A wild change of tone, one especially harmful for some gamers, since you have to play as the "opposite character", not just view from their perspective. I feel like the message was forced onto a story already well founded for a different type of message. Anyway felt like a lost opportunity for me.

    Character Development

    Background
Regarding character development the first game presented Joel, a man surviving "apocalypse" while still struggling to forget his past, doing what he thought was correct based on his moral background by, amongst other decisions, not being able to trade Ellie for humanity; not a hero neither an antihero or a villain, just a man who had motives justified enough, builted during the whole game, to do what he did.

    Contrast
Now, complaints about Part II shouldn’t be about the story development (despite you can dislike) rather the execution of it and how you justify the decisions of your characters and the progress of the story overall, which has been incohesive or, as I see it, motives to justify each character's decisions have not been shown in the game and are assumed as "time has passed" which is a cheap way to mask lack of funds to produce it or lack of talent or experience to deliver it. Therefore, to sell this as top quality product (and work of art) is not acceptable. Besides that, an advertising that hyped it’s public in a misleading way has also affected the public's expectations and, therefore, it’s reception.

    Gameplay

Gameplay does not disappoint despite the frequent encounters with the same type of enemies with slight variations, and the excessive need of search for resources, thanks to the many tools given to the player. Despite including new features, like jump or prone position on characters, puzzles and areas that can be resolved in more varied ways, upgrades both to abilities and weapons, it does not bring too much to the table when compared to other games in the same genre. Minor bugs, the slow movement of the camera and other aspects may be an inconvenience from time to time but the amount of options regarding these and others aspects make up for them.

    Graphics

As far as graphics go and given that this game is limited to consoles the performance sustains the amazing visuals without much effort and offers a view worthy of a background, with some exceptional moments when this quality drops slightly though not enough for the player to notice without a closer look into specific details, such as certain animations (jumping for example), a slight downgrade from the trailer in specific areas and very, very rare bugs.

    Sound
Music, environment, sound effects and voice acting are flawless. Every line, every gunshot, every impact add a very heavy weight to immersion that is only eclipsed by these game’s reliance on story telling that drives you out of this world from time to time.

    Summarize

Being a Story Based Driven Game it relies much more in writing quality than many other games; all pacing, narrative, character development, have a significant role in driving the player to interpretate the message below the cover. in this particular case ND have set for themselves a bar too high to reach for the sake of forcing one particular message into a universe not previously thought for it, into an audience that require a different type of narration than other types of media now a days (like novels, TV shows, movies, etc.). Despite the controversies surrounding this game in particular there is no denying that either due to their objective, marketing, writing, messages or all of these together this product and work of art is as far from being a masterpiece as it is from being a colossal disaster.

My final reception of the game is 5.5/10 but I must settle on a 5 for this review scale.

I quite enjoyed the gameplay, even if it wasn't anything new. Most parts of the game were fun to play. The different use of weapons was nice, but I found myself just using 2 different weapons and only use the others when I was out of ammo. The skill tree was okay. There was some useful stuff in there, but sometimes there was no correlation between the skills you had to unlock before you could unlock other skills.
I really did enjoy the AI in this game (except when you played as Abby and had to fight against Ellie). They were somewhat smart and I really liked it when I killed someone and another AI yelled the name of the one I killed. This makes them more than just some people that you had to kill.

    The visuals and sound:
I thought the game was a beautiful looking game with stunning visuals, but it does feel like it will be outdated in only a few years. That doesn't take from the fact that I really enjoyed looking around when I was playing.

The sounds in the game were pretty good. I enjoyed most of the voice acting and the sound of the world was pretty great.

    The story:
I understand why people are upset that Joel died at the beginning of the game. I would have loved to see more of him since he is a great character, but I understand why they killed him early in the game. Ellie's story was okay. It was nothing great, but I liked Dina and Jessie and I enjoyed their interactions with each other. I also enjoyed that the game explored Ellie's and Dina's sexuality. While some/a lot of people think that this is Naughty Dog being political and in your face, I don't think this is the case. The Last of Us was a very realistic portrayal of people and how they act and I think Part 2 does that too. People are all just different from each other and that is how you make a game more interesting.

However, when the game was halfway over and we started with Abby's part, I had some problems with beginning with it. You started completely fresh. All the upgrades you've had done with Ellie were gone and I found that frustrating. While I did think Abby her story was more interesting, it felt like it could be a whole new game, since you were starting over and there were only a few crossovers with Ellie her story.

I quite liked the ending. I thought they would go a different way, but I was okay with the path they took. I did not become angry about the fact that Abby was still alive, because for me the game let me empathize with both sides and I understood why Ellie let her go.

    Overall:
Overall I quite enjoyed playing the game. It did feel a bit long at some point and I felt like it could be 10 hours shorter without missing the essence of the game. I also think it would have been better if you played both stories simultaneously, instead of the first half is Ellie and the other half is Abby. I appreciate the inclusion of different kinds of people than the normal tough guy you play as in most games.

I understand that people are disappointed with Joel dying so early in the game, but I absolutely don't agree with all the hate this game gets. That being said, I also don't think the game is a 10/10. It has its flaws gameplay-wise and storywise, but overall it is a pretty enjoyable game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finished this game on the weekend but decided to write a review now. I needed time to rethink everything, but now I'm ready. Let's start in order:
    1) Graphic. It is the most important component of the game. it is clear that the company has done a great job in this direction. Everything is very high quality drawn, the eyes are pleased to look at it. But it doesn’t reach the level of RDR 2 a bit, still there the graphics are not reachable. rating for graphics - 9/10
    2) Music. Here is above all praise. Playing the guitar was simply exciting especially liked the episode with the song Take on me, after that I continue to go into YouTube and listen to it. It is not surprised that this episode now has 1.5 million views. So here 10/10
    3) Gameplay. Here it is already debatable. On the one hand, a lot of innovations appeared, a new combat system ... But this is impressive somewhere in the middle of the game, then it becomes already boring. I do not blame the developers for this, but it would be possible to improve it a little. Therefore 8/10
    4) Plot. Here I will scold developers. How could you spoil the story after the first part? We had a great story about relationship between father (yes, I perceive him already as her father) and daughter. Ahd what we have in the 2 part? You see a dead Joel who was killed by some unknown botex woman. and what does Druckmann do? He wants to justify this scary woman with two hours of stupid story about her. It was very unwise to talk about some unknown doctor when we killed more than a hundred people in the first part. That is, he could take any random character that we killed in the first part and make his child take revenge for it. It is very cheap and not original. Drackmann is trying to resemble Glukhovsky, but he is not good at it. Shame on you, Druckmann !!! Now 3/10
    5) Propaganda. One more worst thing in the game. I could forgive Sarkisyan for the terrible daughter of Drake (instead of the normal boy who was supposed to be originally), but in this game it was terrible. Hairy armpits, Ellie's disgusting girlfriend, pumped Abby, gay boy ... All this caused nausea and once again confirmed that calling Sarkeesian was a bad idea. 0/10
In the end, i would like to say that Naughty Dog buried this series of games. I, like many fans, did not expect them to release such a weak game after Uncharted 4. I saw yesterday that he hinted at part 3 of the game ... I am absolutely sure that no one will wait it and the sales will be as low as possible. Thanks for your attention!)

The flashbacks, while great, are poorly placed and I feel the story would have been better if we got some context before the inciding incident, and not after. The ending is good, but not nearly as powerful as the ending in the first one. The new characters kinda suck. Most are killed of and quickly forgotten, and Joel's death does not sit right with me. This game is weird. I hate a lot of it. I love a lot of it. It's still a game I would recommend to everyone who enjoyed the first one, just to have a reaction to it. It's worth the 60 bucks. The review bombing is ridiculous, and people should play the game themselves and make up their own opinions.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This Game is bold! Neil Druckmann has made a game that I personally loved and hated at the same time. First off this game is absolutely gorgeous and beautiful and has an incredible cast, but for me the story was below average. The first problem I have is the story of Ellie trying to achieve revenge and get justice against Abby. That is her story and her goal throughout the entire game. So when you the player go through hours of this game to not even reach that goal as the main character (Ellie)and the face of the game cover. That is outrageous. It makes the experience of the entire game seem pointless through the eyes of Ellie. If Ellie would have killed Abby at the end then it would have been some kind of payoff for the player, but it is probably true Ellie would get little satisfaction from doing this action, so in the end I agree that Ellie should have let Abby live at the end because she made that decision on her own and finally realized that what she was doing was not something ultimately Joel would want given the circumstances. I also am not happy with how the pacing of this game and how the story is structured. It feels as though segments of this game were thrown together at random. I also of course didnt enjoy how Joel was killed. It seemed like Abby got her revenge way to easily and it wasn't earned. It felt like Joel was put in that situation just so that the story could be moved along quicker. I think it could have been cool to play as Abby and infiltrate Jackson and try to get info on the people in that town and search for Joel through that way and then have Abby somehow create a situation where she could get them alone together and have her betray his trust that way. I think doing it this way would have made it feel earned by Abby rather than just a coincidence that so happen to work out for Abby. Also I very much disliked how the story tries to make you sympathize with Abby as a person. Joel is a beloved character by fans and yes the death of him by Abby was intended for the player to feel anger and disgust which was what I felt. So, when I have the expectation to play as Ellie throughout the game I feel even more disgusted when I'm having to play as a character I hate and then proceed to play as Abby to fight Ellie at a Climax part of the game. Why am I playing as this character who killed one beloved character and is now trying to kill the Face of the game(Ellie). I was so unenthusiastic about this that I let Ellie kill Abby around 20 times because of how much I'd rather play as Ellie in this moment rather than Abby. Back to the point of the game failing to make me sympathize with Abby is in the moment when Abby holds a knife up to Dina's throat and Ellie say "She's Pregnant" and Abby's response is "Good". This makes me hate the character even more because it shows that she is willing to kill a pregnant women without a second thought. There may be an arguement that Ellie actually did kill a pregnant women but when watching that scene she has no idea that she was actually pregnant and when Ellie finds out she was indeed pregnant, Ellie then starts hyperventilating and falls to her knees realizing how **** up a thing she just did. She regrets it and she made a big mistake. So when I hear people saying that Abby is a good person I am caught off guard as to why they think this.

Again I loved this game for taking risks that it did but some of these risks failed which why I hate the game at the same time. The best moments from this game for me was the flashback moments with Ellie and Joel, and it made me realize that if Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann would have made a game about an adventure with Joel and Ellie as a duo going through all the moments of all the flashbacks from The Last of Us Part 2 and going into those moments in more depth and exploring that relationship rather then what we received in the final game. I'm sure their were a couple more things I wanted to go over but I can't recall any at this moment.

    Story: 3/10
    Gameplay: 9/10
    Graphics: 10/10
    Pacing/structure: 3/10
    Overall: 6.5/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to like this game, I wanted to love this game so badly, but it's just not very good. It's not terrible, mind you, but it's not good either. Let's get the positives out of the way: combat is fine, it's basically the same as it was in TLoU 1. Graphically this game is stunning, it's amazing what the devs were capable of doing with the PS4.

With the positives out of the way, let's get into the negatives. The game feels less like a game and more like a movie simulator, and in a bad way. While it's not awful, it seems like some cutscenes just go on, and on, and never end. While the combat itself is fun, the way the game generally plays is...medicore at best, with long sections of nothing punctuated with combat encounters. And then there's the story. Oh, dear lord, the story.

There's so many plotholes, so many instances where characters survived wounds that would have killed characters in the first game. The concept of the story itself is fine, but it was executed so poorly that it destroys the game's value. Almost all of the new characters, if not all of them, that are introduced in this game die. Almost all of the old characters, and all of the old characters that most people care about (aside from Ellie) die. This game would have been like, a 6 or a 7/10 if it weren't for the absolutely awful ending. The story, literally, had no point. That's this game. You do everything, get to the end, and it's for nothing. Literally, and in the game's plot.

6.5/10 - As someone who bought the ps4 for uncharted 4, owns all the other games, tlou1 and even art books TLOU2 certainly doesn't disappoint from a VISUAL perspective. Visually speaking this is one of the best looking games with outstanding environment design and cinematic visual storytelling.

Unfortunately a game is a sum of its parts and visuals can only go so far. TLOU2 is a confused title that fails to clearly define itself as either a game or (what if often feels like.) a film.

Simply put the narrative elements, cut scenes and 'walking-talking' segments often interrupt and get in the way of the core stealth-combat-scavenge game play experience. Being forced to walk slowly through a sequence can be an irritating change of pace especially as this is a pattern throughout the whole game.

It would be easier to embrace this style and pacing if the narrative itself was actually more tolerable and immersive. However the story is riddled with plot devices, clichés and unintelligent characters.

Everything about the narrative is very contrived, characters act the way they do not because it is logical or organic, but because the story demands it.

Routinely characters will opt to engage in solo suicide missions rather than work as a group which leads to the laughable cliché of characters conveniently bumping into one another repeatedly. (Under near impossible odds.)
During every stage of the game characters will always find a way to make the most unintelligent choices they can. This includes a certain group not utilising radios or even combat knives despite being trained soldiers with access to military equipment! There are many examples of this kind and every time they serve as a plot device to either force the narrative or aspects of the game play.

In the end you are left with a game/film hybrid that feels too much like a film and a narrative with too much silliness to be taken as seriously as was clearly intended.
The final product feels very polished from a visual perspective; research and attention to detail are apparent resulting in a very realistic feeling/entertaining post apocalypse.
However this same standard and level of realism is clearly not delivered from a writing perspective, as is so often the case with today’s block buster films.

Not a game critic or anything, but the saddest thing about this game was the genuine potential it had with the visuals, sound design, visceral and violent combat (if you’re into that), and second to none voice acting and motion capture scenes - and they had to pretty much throw it away with a really disappointing story. Incredibly convoluted and rather unsatisfying by the time I finished it, it pretty much had no sense of achievement, fun-factor, emotion or flow compared to the masterfully written first instalment. The game definitely had its moments that were intense, but as a whole didn’t really add onto the quality of the overarching story, not to mention the really strange pacing issues at times.

The marketing and build up for this game was very misleading, and I won’t mention any spoilers - read the other reviews for spoilers, but those who know will know what I mean. The 'perfect' scores from big corporate review companies really do also highlight the unfortunate monopoly that a lot of these game companies have, the whole 'review copy' and embargo restrictions are topics of conversation that can be discussed to great lengths.

I can’t seem to understand Naughty Dog’s business tactic here, they definitely have the capabilities and money to produce a world-class game, I’m really confused about why Druckmann and his writing team would opt to go for such a ‘controversial’ story, that wasn’t even written very well in the first place - all to then slate the fans who didn’t ‘see’ the game for what it was on the internet? It doesn’t seem like a very profitable decision to me, not just from a financial perspective, but for reputation of the company. I am also very aware of the rumours of controversy behind the working conditions, Amy Hening getting fired etc. so maybe the studio is just not what it once was...

I genuinely do feel bad for the people at the company who dedicated the last 7 years designing one of the best looking and sounding games I’ve played so far, to go through all that effort in vain for such a disappointing story that I can infer for such a renowned studio could’ve only been a result of things like big disagreements, lack of input from a wide range of creators and poor management.

My score is in the yellows and not the reds purely for the incredible elements of the game mentioned at the beginning of my review, but without them, the game really does suffer from an incredibly disappointing narrative - the legacy of the first game has really been thrown down the drain for many fans.

I waited so long for the successor and was unfortunately disappointed.
Joel's death was very frightening, but unfortunately predictable in my eyes. Ellie's revenge is therefore "justified". During the time you played Ellie, I had a lot of fun with the game and the flashbacks made the game perfect for me ...
But then there was the switch to Abby ...
From this point on the game only hurt in the heart. Why should I have fun playing the character who killed my beloved Joel ??
Ellie got a soul from Joel and I loved that about her so much. But then you play the psycho monster Abby and it's just cruel.
Now a few words to the end: I've never had a more unsatisfactory ending in a game than in The Last of Us Part II.
It may be that the developers wanted to make it clear that revenge is never worth it because Ellie ultimately lost everything, but that makes the end of the game so incredibly unsatisfactory.
My expectations were huge ... and they were smashed to the ground.

Yes the story does fall short in some cases and is filled with plot holes, I do not agree with the direction of the game like everyone else, yet you cannot deny the attempt, vision and effort they tried putting into this game. It's mainly surrounding the hatred and vengeance, which drives to conclude nothing in the end because of all the loss both Ellie and Abby suffered through because of hate.

In conclusion, not all of it is terrible, many scenes are memorable. Feeling the emotional spark from the voice actors, the animations and voice acting to the small whispers and deep breaths. No se en que estaban pensando cuando hicieron este juego, es una pena como han estropeado algo bueno. Espero que no saquen mas si esta la misma gente al cargo.

After playing through the game over tge last few days i have been torn on what to think. The story ugh the story from the beginning i didn't know what to expect, but as i played through the opening i started to realize joel and Tommy seemed a bit off putting i didn't know why until a certain thing happened that put them in a situation that the Joel from the first game would have never been out in ever. And that decision was very off putting, not the result of what happened to him but the context of how he got in the situation. Making ellie unlikable also hurt the story. Pushing new characters to the front that, a. We have no history with and b. Are no where near as interesting as the original cast kills it for me. And to not have payoff at the end was disappointing i dont need a philosophy lesson when i'm gaming. I understand violence and revenge is wrong. I've seen this story told better in so many different forms of media.
    Gameplay : serviceable 8/10
    Graphics : superb 10/10
    Ai: ok 6/10
Story: coming off the first game not even close 4/10

Beautiful game. A true technical masterpiece. The story suffered some problems early in the game that made the crux of the plotline drag on with a nihilistic tone. I certainly did not gasp, cry, or get got lost in the story of this installment. as I did in the first one.

Lots of things that don't truly add up and character inconsistencies. Joel was bound to die, obviously, but two hours into the game? And it's a very quick scene, lacking symbolism. The game then tries to mask Ellie and Joel as terrible people, while making an effort to bring sympathy for Abby. Expand

This game was a masterpiece. Anyone who says other wise needs to get over Joel (not that great of a character to begin with) and look closer at what that point of the story is. Welp, At first, the answer is yes(to Ellie), but she knew it was no. Maybe she saw Joel's behavior to Abby's behavior(saving kid or fighting for fire gun). Of course, Abby is bad shet in this game, cause you know, kill Joel, bite Ellie's two fingers... I think Ellie try to kill Ellie like Abby did to Joel,(That's why she cut the rope what tied Abby, and fight with fist, not gun or knife), but she knew all people has reasons. But it isn't good game, I said. It is too unkind to tell this meaning to us. Make too difficult to us. Thanks to me about giving 6, dudes. Expand

Why does Abby care so much about Lev and Yara who are enemies so much because she save her but not Joel? Just so many dumb choices. Expand

Unfortunately for myself, while designed by incredibly talented developers the narrative decisions along with a gameplay decision that can only be compared to the bait and switch that came in Metal Gear Solid 2 negatively impact the enjoyment and entertainment that the first 10 hours provided. Hideo Kojima made a daring and shocking choice with Metal Gear Solid 2, which had players experiencing the majority of the game playing as Raiden instead of the franchise's beloved protagonist Solid Snake. The Metal Gear Solid 2 inspired gameplay choice along with what I thought was a very poorly built story that was incredibly unsatisfying, and unsuccessful in engaging the player are what make this game so disappointing. The tremendous technical, visual, and mechanical achievements by the Naughty Dog team are heavily overshadowed by the poorly constructed story and the twelve hours of gameplay that I found stalled the momentum of the game and was just plain boring to play through. Naughty Dog has plenty to be proud of when it comes to The Last of Us Part II, they created a video game with many impressive aspects but ultimately while always important but especially with this IP the level of storytelling and the contents within the story will influence most players overall feeling of the game. I didn't like it. The Last Of Us 2 is a *Decent* game but a TERRIBLE Sequel.

This game has great gameplay and some of the best acting, animations, sound design, graphics and immersion that gaming has ever seen. However the story is one gigantic mess and it sh**s all over your favorite characters from the main game and features some GoT Season 8 Character Logic.

And even if you ignore the terrible intro (which is by far the biggest fu**up i have ever seen any devs do) the game still isn't great. There are massive pacing issues with multiple moments that are extremely slow and boring, and HALF the game is literally nothing but constant Flashbacks. (it even has a flashback inside of a flashback) Does anyone actually like flashbacks?

What makes these flashbacks even worse is that the first set of flashbacks remind you of what this game could have been, and then in the second set of flashbacks that stretch around 8-10 hours, you are playing as a completely different character while the game tries to justify the events of the intro.
While i understood the reasons and didn't necessary HATE this new playable character, i still had no interest in playing as them.

I was so tired and bored of playing as that character so i straight up stopped exploring and just wanted to speedrun through it so i could STOP playing as that goddamn character and go back to the actual main game, until i ofcourse realized that was the main game and i finished the game.

There are so many different paths that Naughty Dog could have gone down with when making this game and for some reason they took the most non-logical and straight up stupid path. They could have made this into a brand new game that had nothing to do with Last Of Us and still been able to create this exact experience, except it would have been a phenomenal game.

And for being a post apocalyptic zombie game there sure are very little Zombies and way too many romantic scenes... There is nearly 0 focus on the infected in this game which is a damn shame because every encounter is incredible.

I am very disappointed in Naughty Dog for ruining THE number 1 story game of all time.

The only way to enjoy this game is to never play the first one and know absolutely nothing about the characters.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
