I feel like, you can make a game without killing a lot of "main" characters. They did in the first game, yet in this game writers goes basaltic. imagine growing up with your teddy bear and suddenly your mom throws it away, you `wouldn't be happy, right?

Finale was also anticlimax, feature no "real" morel message to the players/viewers. Some stuff was just unnecessarily for the story. This story is also heavily dependent on political views, specially about women and trans. In the first game, didn't have any kill able female characters (which is interesting).

Overall this game is "NOT GAME OF THE YEAR", weird decision. It's like they were making a perfect pancake and a customer asked Nutella inside a pancake. Obviously you get confused, but you don’t want to upset customer. In the end your pancake is horrible, but you made your best effort to satisfy the customer.

It's a good game, but very bad writing, hope the writers realize how to write a story without being dependent on society moral and listen to their own hearts and how they feel like story should go.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amazing game and great story. I love the first game and wasn’t sure I needed a sequel. After playing it though, it was well worth it. You must play this game with an open mind for being a story about lost and finding one self. It isn’t about the revenge story, as it’s more about different perspectives and that understanding them will sympathize you with the story. It’s about how Elle never found her reason to move on and live after the results of the first game. Certain character’s actions causes these terrible consequences and If you choose to not understand then because you don’t like certain elements then you are on a blind path just like Elle was. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been a fan of TLOU for five years, and have been anticipating this sequel for just as long. I knew of the contents of the leaks, but never saw them and tried my best to not let it distort my view for the game. I trusted Naughty Dog would do better and deliver. Boy, was I wrong and disappointed.

First, I applaud ND for taking such huge risks with their storytelling this time around - that took guts - however, I cannot say that it paid off or was worth it, for me personally. Doing something risky does not make it brave or compelling, let alone a masterpiece. It's how you execute it that matters.

Visually, this game is a masterpiece. The graphics and audio, music, environment, cinematics, and acting was all Oscar worthy. I was fully immersed just by those pure aspects. Even the gameplay was fun, despite it being just a revamped updated version of TLOU1. My jaw was dropped from the visuals at the opening scene alone. Beautiful work by the developers and art team at ND.

However, I play TLOU for the story, and that is where this game fails. They take what you love about the first game, and rip that from you before your very eyes. For shock value, maybe, but mostly for impact - an impact that never comes with a pay off. I had other expectations for where this game would take us, and they definitely did not go that route. My views of the game constantly shifted while playing through it, until now where they have solidified. Joel and Ellie's relationship is revoked to just flashbacks. They very well could be told in present tense and work in the narrative just as well. The flashbacks were my only favorite parts of the game, since Joel and Ellie's conflicted relationship is treated as a subplot to make room for Abby's story.

Their plan to use Abby to build empathy with the player did not work for me one bit, as it didn't for most of the fans as well. She did not show any redeemable qualities or even have any likable aspects to her that made me cling to her as I did with Joel and Ellie. I found myself so bored while playing her and learning her story. Even her friends fell flat as characters and I did not care for them. Alice was an exception though :)

The pacing of the storyline was also messy compared to the first game. It's non linear, which muddles it along the way. Once you feel it's ending, it just keeps going on to a draining end with no pay off or real conclusion. This mostly was their intent to show how revenge works, but once again it falls flat. It feels as though the game is beating the player over the head constantly with the message of revenge, desperately trying to tie forgiveness in with it which frankly doesn't work for me. The constant use of plot devices to manipulate the player was so obvious I was laughing. Abby plays with dogs vs Ellie kills them, etc. After a while it all feels so inorganic and shallow, compared to the organic feeling the first game gives you in its narrative.

There are also plenty of plot holes, contrivances, and character inconsistencies that made the overall story feel weak. Does Abby not know or realize that Ellie is the immune girl from the hospital? Joel and Tommy conveniently plopping themselves into Abby's clutches, without even fighting back. What exactly makes Abby want to save Yara and Lev, besides her dreams?

The ending of the story just left me hollow and depressed, feeling like I wasted 20hrs playing for nothing. Feeling like my five years of investment in Joel and Ellie was for nothing. Everything felt so meaningless, and I was hurt and felt manipulated from the start. Maybe that's what they were going for, but not all players enjoy this type of treatment - to them OR the characters they deeply love and feel connected to. I love Joel and Ellie to death, and seeing where the both of them ended up by the story's conclusion wrecked me like hell, especially since it felt forced and for no reason despite for the sake of being bleak and nihilistic. I guess what the players are left feeling is what was intended, but how we got there was cheap.

I missed Joel throughout this journey, and wanted to see his and Ellie's relationship (which has always been the heart of TLOU) fleshed out even more as they dealt with their issue of "the lie" but it was taken from me, and you. The scene where he tells her the truth felt anti-climactic and rushed. The dialogue was blunt and weak despite their strong deliveries from Troy and Ashley.

Overall, I had fun with the gameplay and the visuals, but story wise I was hurt and let down. Five years of waiting only to be emotionally manipulated in a cheap fashion by ND. You should play it for yourself to form an opinion and enjoy the graphics, but only that. Don't play this game to escape from the darkness of our world, because it only adds to that. The light in the darkness from the first game has been switched and taken from you, only to leave you and the characters you love lost in the darkness.

If you're looking for a realistic looking game, you've picked the right one. The facial expressions are so well represented that even when the game is muted, you can know what the characters feel.

Gameplay : 9/10, the gameplay feels smooth. Very little glitches, the animations for the stealth kills and the crouch walk / prone are perfect. However, the shooting in these games don't feel right. I feel like these characters have never used a gun before. I do love using the bow and the crossbow.

Story : 7/10. I gave the story a 7/10 not because it is bad, but more because there are a few things that didn't satisfy me. Here are the few things I disliked:

    1. Not having a choice at the end of the game. Not being able to choose to continue the cycle of revenge (Lev going after Ellie after killing Abby) or stop it ( The current story ending ).

    2. The part of the story when we play Abby. Just before we play Abby, we are left with a cliffhanger. I felt the need to rush the part of Abby just to see what happens next instead of trying to understand this new character. Maybe if we had her parts at the same time like: Day 1, Ellie's story, then Day 1, Abby's story, then Ellie day 2, Abby day 2, and so on.

    3. Not enough Joel and Ellie. The first game was so magical with the adventure we had with Joel and Ellie. I would of loved more flashbacks as I find myself smiling ever time I see these two together.

The reason the final score is 7 while there are 2 scores that are 10 / 10 is because in these types of games, the story is what's the most important.

I love love love Ellie's part of the game but Abby's meh, not so much. Trying so hard to make us sympathy with her, was just forced and off. I understood why she did all this but again it was horrible. I feel like they made this game not to complete the legacy of Ellie and Joel but to milk the franchise for part 3 and more money no matter who they sacrifice. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful graphics, incredible details, interesting gameplay, but what spoils this awful story. The game forces you to like a character that you play for 3 hours and kills the protagonist of the first game that you spend 10 hours of your time playing and enjoying him. And the way they killed him was also horrible, it wasn't even halfway through the game that Joel goes and surrenders to people he doesn't even know. The message that this game tried to send too... "Revenge is a stupid game" Ellie kills all of Abby's friends just to in the end gives up on killing her.
I couldn't sympathize with Abby at all, every time I played with her I just wanted her to die.
And some unnecessary scene by the way.

I played the original probably a dozen times over the past 7 years. I gave up on this one about 6 hours in from boredom and had more fun spoiling myself by reading the plot summary on Wikipedia.
Critics are rating this highly because they are judging it as an "experience". Gamers are rating this lowly because we are judging it as a game.
My rating is entirely due to the game's technical merit.

So wäre Joels Tod glaubwürdiger.

While the game has some compelling moments and is beautifully rendered I felt the developers failed to find a good balance between storytelling and gameplay. Its seemed to fall into the horror film trope of people constantly making bad decisions. There were parts where I was questioning why my character was doing what they were doing, why I am here endlessly killing. I loved the first half however, the the second half had me much less interested. Then again the final couple of levels just had me wondering why the hell I was there. The story failed to convince and fully engage me, and the ending just left me feeling empty.

It always looks amazing but even then the very clear 'gaming' rules and an environment where your interaction is controlled and mostly linear it also felt quite old-fashioned at times. There is a ten foot wall in front of me but I can't climb it because it has leaves on it, instead I have to go do several things to enable me to traverse it.

And it was very much an extension of the first game, if you haven't played the first I couldn't see how you would understand or relate to this game unlike say Uncharted 2 or any of the sequels from that franchise.

Not disappointed though, there are some incredible moments there just that they aren't joined together by convincing storytelling. I may go for an NG+ on the hardest level, I may content myself by replaying some of the better encounters. The combat is satisfyingly brutal although towards the end of the game did start to feel samey. Also the pacing was a little slow at times.

And lastly the dogs. Leave them out any future games please. I have six of them and I don't want to have to kill them in a game. Big negative for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I believe this game deserves a 6/10. It was highly disappointing. Although the graphics were phenomenal and the gameplay was great, the story fell flat for me in a number of ways. For one thing, Joel’s death while not surprising felt rushed and executed merely for shock value. His death felt numbing in a way that it partially contributed to me not caring or being emotionally attached to any of the characters in the game. The lack of care for the characters is due to the fact that I felt a handful of the characters relationships with one another were insincere and could have been developed more (Jesse, Ellie and Joel, Dina, Lev and Yara, Tommy and Maria, etc.) During the game and up until the end, I found it difficult to fully connect or care about any of the characters in the game whereas in the first game, I developed a deep attachment and understanding of Joel and Ellie, flawed or not. Furthermore, the switch to Abby, not only threw me off in terms of the plot progression (bc with Ellie we had reach a cliffhanger by Seattle Day 3 and then we switch to Abby) but also because Abby’s story felt like an entirely different saga vaguely related to the most prevalent events of the game. I understood the theme of vengence, violence, forgiveness, and tribality, however I don’t think I needed such a long and dragged out game such as this to understand these themes. In fact, I’ve seen shows such as Avatar: The Last Airbender (a childrens show) reflect these themes much more powerfully and executed in ways that made me deeply reflect on the human condition not only as a kid watching it, but still as an adult rewatching it. I can respect the risks Naughty Dog has taken in an attempt to elevate gaming to new storytelling levels, however, the story just did not work for me. Expand

Cons: Gameplay disconnected from the story, not enough attention to character development, padded to the gills

TLOU1 was a love letter to the South and Americana in many ways. It lingers on the foliage of the vistas, you fight zombies through abandoned suburban towns, the final fight in a snowy mountain town was unforgettable. TLOU2 suffers in many ways through a reliance on sewers and abandoned buildings and basements. In the first game Tess sacrifices herself to help ellie and joel after she's bitten. When she begs them to run you can see the fear and anger in her. In this game there is no one compelling in that manner. Abby becomes your favorite character because they make Ellie's campaign so tedious you can't help but like her.

As many others have said, Ellie is reduced to a workshopped set of keywords: angry, fatigued, sardonic, unempathetic, insecure. I think less of an issue than uses not liking this game is why do the critics love it so much? It believes in its own greatness with a burning passion, and critics lap this up. It believes "bad guys can be good too" is a mindblowing message. If you look at games such as God of War, the Witcher, or Persona 5, you see games where the story is incredibly complex and rich. If you play a game such as Dark Souls or Bloodborne you see games where the story isn't even clearly explained and yet its utterly haunting. TLOU2 doesn't come close to this complexity of storytelling, yet critics have slavered over themselves for it and to defend it to all. This game is just ok - not bad, and not great, but a perfectly fine game with some issues.

There is no denying that the sequel would undoubtedly leave people unhappy, the pressure on this game meant that nothing short of perfection would be accepted, as should be the case because the unfortunate truth of this game is that it has for me, and for many others, tarnished the beauty of its predecessor.
It should not need to be said that graphically the Last of Us 2 is indeed a masterpiece. Other elements such as the gameplay and the acting are improved but stay true to the original., it is perhaps what makes the story of this game all the harder to accept. I played this game with a mixture of heartbreak, anger, and disinterest. Heartbreak for all the artists, actors, programmers, everyone who worked so hard especially amidst the rumours of crunch time behind the scenes; anger that the writers had failed to match the high standards of the artists and the original. Disinterest because I felt no enjoyment throughout the second half, and indeed part of the first.

It took me 3 attempts to finish this game. Admittedly only because i felt I owed it to those who worked so hard, and to my adoration of the original, I prayed the payoff would be worth it.
Neil Druckmann said that they would not create a sequel without a real reason, indeed the motivation here demands the story be told, the story begins as a mission for revenge - pure and simple. The game plays out with a similar linearity to the first one with regards to gameplay, but with a strong reliance on flashbacks and alternative POVs to create a depth that quite frankly, it could have done without. It has taken me many hours to accept the story and direction taken by Druckmann, I have however still not forgiven it. The insistence on forcing this outdated and frankly unwanted trope that 'an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind' is what makes this game so unlikeable. The message is too forced, so much so that it detracts from the likeability of even those characters from the original. It also does not help that they altered the trailer, substituting characters to avoid leaks.
At the end of the day I cannot score this game poorly because it is so beautiful in every aspect but story. It has though ruined the beauty of the Last of Us for me. I wish it hadn't, I really wanted to fall in love with this game, but no matter how many excuses I make, I cannot forgive the laziness of the writing. I see hints of the bittersweet nuances of the original, especially in the flashbacks, which makes this review all the harder. But I felt lied to when I finished this game, angry that the very same people who created the first game with all its depth and heartbreak, could turn around and accept this as a worthy sequel.
This review is not an angry rage against a direction I did not agree with, it is a solemn warning of the disappointment to come for any who choose to play this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although I don’t agree with a 5.4 rating, I just as much don’t agree with a 10/10 rating. This games pacing is horrible. You’re all over the place with this game. I was hoping the leaks would be false about playing for Abby for the second half of the game. It was flashback after flashback and then you flash forward and then flash back and then flash to the present: it was all over the place. And after you beat the daylights out of Ellie and her crew as Abby, you flash forward like a year maybe 2 years into the future with completely different takes on the characters. For example: At the beginning of the game, Tommy doesn’t want Ellie to go face Abby and just let it go, and then at the end of the game, he calls Ellie pathetic for trying to let it go?? The whole barn sequence felt like a day dream or something. It’s like if you were watching a tv show that ran 4 seasons. 1st season is great so far. It’s good, it’s interesting, and it sets the tone and setting. 2nd season, it’s all right. It’s nothing like the first season, but you aren’t as interested. Then it feels like you skipped the 3rd seasons and went straight to the 4th/final season with new characters (rattlers) and Ellie, Abby and Tommy are all different characters now.

Despite all that, there were many good parts to the game, mainly being gameplay.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is far from a 10. Just finished it. I'm a graphics whore so I loved the global illumination technique used. It made a present gen game look almost new gen. Almost, because there were clear limitations shown by the aging hardware. Those limitations alone make it not a 10. You can't just go throwing 10's at games when there are clear flaws. There is no such thing as a perfect game and therefore no one should be slapping perfect scores on any game, ever.

It's one of the best looking games ever made but it still had LOTS of geometry, texture and shadow LOD issues, various glitches, some PS2 quality textures in places not off the beaten path, some places where the baked GI was clearly not present, some frame rate issues on the Pro, a few 'zbuffer' issues, etc.. I've recorded short vids of a lot of this stuff, and a few screenies. The animation was amazing, loved their new animation system and hope that other devs catch onto it. I went to play Spiderman shortly after beating the game and the animation in that game now looks so flawed to me in comparison. ND has the best artists.

The story… Too many contrived elements. I didn't have a problem with most of the story but treating some of the characters the way they did was unnecessary. This is a video game, therefore it isn't going to win any academy awards. Some sjw stuff was just unnecessarily shoved in my face which I didn't appreciate. The mushy, kissy kissy, lovey dove stuff went too far between E and D, like it was only there for the sake of pushing an agenda. If I had only seen it 2 or 3 times I wouldn't have thought anything of it. But then there were also the hairy armpits.. really? And not just once... Don't push that stuff in my face in a video game. It was almost as if someone high up on the team had a certain fetish.. If you want to argue realism, then you can certainly argue that Abby was a complete caricature because there is no way she could have looked like that without roids, and that isn't at all realistic in a post apocalyptic world. But it's there. So Abby had access to roids, but didn't have access to a razor? Can't argue that she's a dike because she isn't. Dina's a dike so I let that one go. If you look at young Abby she was not a bulky or stocky girl. She couldn't have obtained that look without roids. The look she had after the encounter with Ellie and Tommy, sure, that's possible.

None of the characters in this game really stood out or were likeable. I just wanted Ellie and Dina both to get murdered somehow pretty early on. Crap characters, forced and way over done romance elements. I was so burnt out on this game by the time I finished Ellie's story, then I had sooooo much more to go than I realized. This game was way, way too long for the type of game it is. It just wasn't fun anymore after a certain point and I was just anxious to get it over with, staying up late trying to force it sooner rather than later. That's never a good sign of a decent game. Overall I'd give this game a 6/10. It isn't nearly as good as the first one and I'm so burnt out on it that I don't even want to go back to the first game to finish a new playthrough I started a few weeks ago. This game should have been split up into two games. Even then, they would both have been quite long if you explored and collected. I don't even think I'd want to see a third one.

ND is much better at making Uncharted games. I'm now convinced that they just got really lucky with the first game and things just fell into place. Use this great engine and even better GI and visuals for a new Uncharted game. Heck, Nate can even bring his daughter as a sidekick since Sony loves sidekicks so much. Or give us an earlier story that we've never been told, maybe between UC2 and 3, or 3 and 4.

I feel like the story had many directions it could’ve went but it just wasn’t the main concern as you can tell with the lazy writing. It took 7 years just for naughty dog to mess up an extraordinary new IP. There was no point to Joel death because in the end there was no revenge...so after I finished the game I felt very empty. I didn’t understand the moral of the story if there was one. The amazing graphics and gameplay quality can’t save such a dry story concept. Oh & it was very gay. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Calling the story poor is lazy.
Calling the story perfect is lazy
The story is brave and the morale that is tried to be established is alluring.
I think for most people, where the story "fails" is that you have expected to see another story about your heroes. You expected to get a character development and an arc that makes sense for a fan, and that is something that Neil will have to deal with the team in the future. By the end of the day one could even say that you have created trailers that pointed in a wrong direction....you misguided our hopes.

My recommendation would be to re-think the structural time-line that had been chosen and try to understand it's challenges for the future. By the end of the day there are so many themes and motives that need to be understood in order to really capture the meaning of the game that it would be taking a lot of Empathy, Forgiveness, Love to understand. How much love did you show the people by misguiding their hopes and emotions? How much Love did you show people by butchering Joel like that and how much Forgiveness did you offer to People by giving them this end?

Also, my recommendation would be to review what is expected of the player (empathy) vs. what is shown by the characters (Abby, where is the empathy?)

Did Elli lost herself? Lost her fingers, lost her ability to play the guitar? Her ability to connect with Joel ? Who is Elli now and how will she get back on track? ...7 years for this is really harsh.

Did Abby forgive Elli? Will she be able to understand her sins? Will she be able to grow a conscious? Does she still feel it was right?....

Why did Joels brother go to Elli and requested revenge? Isn't he the real adult? Doesn't he KNOW his brother? Joel never would have wanted this...

The game creates a lot of questions and you leave people alone. I like being alone, but others might feel differently. It is an absolute hate-it-or-love-it product and you have to deal with that Naughty Dog.

This game will be hit or miss for a lot of people, the story was all over the place and felt forced in many instances, the whole "cycle of revenge" trope feels very tired at this point, and Elly taking the decision to not take Abby's life in the end to supposedly end the cycle makes no sense, since she proceeded to kill hundreds of people during the course of the game, and every kill could potentially create another "Cycle", this is a case where the story and gameplay just don't mesh well together at all. I'm also not saying that killing joel at the start of the game was that bad of a decision, it just could've been handled a lot better. As always the gameplay and graphics are top notch for a naughty dog game, I just never really felt invested in the story, and it felt like they could also skim 5 hours off the game which felt unnecessarilly long, especially in the abby section of the game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ll try to explain the best I can the reason for my review, and there will be spoilers probably. I finished the game almost a week ago. I waited till now to avoid giving a rate based on what the story was intended to. The gameplay, the only flaw I actually remember was few times where the triangle button for action didn’t show (I could see the circle indicating interaction but the triangle button to do it wouldn’t show and wouldn’t work). But that’s ok, the rest was pretty much flawless. The puzzles, were witty enough to entertainment but not hard enough to make you get bored because you couldn’t get through it, I like them. I did found tiring some times the looting mechanics, repetitive, but that’s me; I know a lot of players that loved it. Music, outstanding as we thought, the music for each scene were so accurate, they would complete the immersive experience by starting in the right moment. Graphics were awesome, I was speechless more than a few times. The accurate description of plants taking over cities, the moss on rainy cities, the tracks on the snow and mud sections were surprisingly good. It was pretty good. Now to the controversy, the story: I don’t really hate the story, I understand the message behind the story. We hate seeing how Ellie does everything Joel never wanted her to do, she throws her life away searching for revenge instead of trying to get comfort on the family she had with Dina and JJ. But that’s ok, that’s the point, to feel it even harder because you’re watching how revenge is ruining a character you have the urge to protect, due to the first game, and everyone around. What messed up the game for me was playing as Abby and here is why:
•Abby has a game style pretty close to Joel’s. The way she executes sneaky attacks, the need to craft shiv, the ability to press down and x to quickly change the camera point of view etc. •We are forced to guide her to the theater where she kills Jessie, shots Tommy and almost gets Dina killed. •We are forced to fight Ellie in a way that resembles way too much the fight against David on the first (can’t do direct attack, have to hide and avoid make noise, have different stages to defeat her, really even the advice in the screen was similar “use listening mode to get the upper hand” ) •We have to fight Tommy as a sniper with Abby, the same way Joel had to get through a sniper on the first one. •lev and Abby bonding story resembling Joel and Ellie’s. Where Abby finds a reason to redeem herself with lev, the same way Joel finds a way to redeem himself by protecting Ellie. • this one is not that important, but also contributed. Back to the hospital, we see this conversation between the doctor and Marlene, the purpose is for us to understand that they were just making things right... but Ellie was right there, they could’ve ask, but they chose to kill her without remorse. So, while I understand the “one for the many”, I can’t say I understand their choice here. For this reason the rest of the story lost the weight it had. In general the game felt as if the developers were mocking me as a gamer and fan of the first game. They put so many thing that resembled the first game on abbys character knowing that we would hate it, that it felt they were laughing at me. So, my score is due to the poor respect they had for the players. And because to be honest when I finished it, the words that came out of me was: is that it? At that point I want even mad or sad, nothing. Finishing: I won’t discourage people from buying it, I’m honestly just sharing my experience, which can or can’t be like yours. I will recommend tho, that if your going in because of the story, watch some spoilers, because there are lots of disappointed gamers for different reasons. If you’re playing without having played the 1st one or just because of the gameplay, go ahead, you will probably love it. Have fun, Barxco.

Sadly the best comparison to the Last of us part II I can make is the last season of Game of Thrones. You know the people in it, it still looks beautiful and you can see the effort and hard work gone into it, but it feels wrong. It's not that I hate the story, it's that it is not character driven anymore but plot/theme driven. It is driving home a point with a viciousness that seems to ignore its own origins. I think the most heartbreaking thing is when the game has moments that are genuinely beautiful and well written that shows the potential this game had and the talent behind it. Again, like GoT it's not that the story itself is bad, it's the execution that is the problem, it's about believability. The idea for the plot was controversial and bold, that however raises the stakes on how to execute it - where it falls short in my opinion.
Another personal pet peeve is trans representation, this is no criticism of including trans characters in stories, but how. it seems that not enough thought was put into sensitivity reading of the plot when a trans character is repeatedly deadnamed not to mention the emotional suffering said character has to go to for being trans. I also wondered why include a trans character in a game that is essentially about the circle of violence to begin with. It does seem a little like just checking the box "has trans representation" without any deeper thought about how that representation is executed.

The game relays on a lot of coincidences, like when you play as Abby at the beginning of the game and she gets swarmed with zombies, for some reason Joel, who was in a sheltered place, decided to go out there and help her, maybe the time he has spent with Ellie has soften him up, but then he goes to her place, full with her friends, without even investigating first why would she try to help a complete strange out, and the he gives her his name! which lead to his death. it felt like a cheap way to get the story rolling. the game has a lot of situations where it relays on these kinds of coincidences, but other than the story, everything else is near perfect.

The Tlou2 doesnt hold true to the main character: Joel. Yea he just saves this random girl from being clicker bait with Tommy and brought her back to her friends and gives out their names but he also knows how notorious he is when he’s done a lot of **** after the breakout. After being saved from the man who killed her father she needs to kill him. Understandable I suppose but thats not how you kill a main and beloved character and in the very beginning of the game. Later as we play as Abby she saves 2 kids because they saved her. Where was the same even slight compassion for Joel? The lies and false advertising is another thing apparently Joel was still supposed to be alive. All I’m saying is this story could’ve gone a different way if they didnt force feed Abby down our throats to make her like-able. I get her side of the story, yea she lost way more in a few days but it was still ultimately her fault. None of her friends would've been killed if she either killed all the people in Joels party(probably didnt want to end up like him) or tortured him for a few days and let him go cause he did save her. Maybe this story couldve been about getting revenge on Abby for torturing him or not. This story could’ve been better. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly I want to love this game and I'm forcing the playthrough but I just don't. The content is there but the sequencing is so messy. I appreciate what the aim was with the chronology and I'm deffinetely behind increasing positive lgbt representation, but the messy order of things doesn't invest me in the characters enough. It's like having the punchline prior to a joke, it just doesn't land and its just such a crying shame. I feel a lot of the game I'm just rushing through with all these new characters forced upon me to get back to the point I can progress the story again. As time went on I did get slightly behind Abby but I never really connected or sympathised with her and can't get over the fact I may have been a lot more open to her if her plot came first and it was advertised as her being the lead with Joel and Ellie being a surprise twist for the end rather than a tease. Imagine having that devastating moment once you had already bonded with Abby through her and Levs plot rather than trying so obviously to get you to change your mind after making you despise her. I feel that would've been a much more tense inner conflict if we'd gone through her journey only to realise we'd brought her to that moment, not realising her back story or goals and be torn between 2 characters we knew and loved as we suddenly realise who she is. Its almost like part 2 and 3 were both made simultaneously and mashed together. By no means is it garbage there's a lot of class voice acting and visuals here, but given the wait I feel its evident from the fan base a lot more vetting was required. The gameplay really hasn't had any major upgrades from number 1 and I'm surprised so many critics are ignoring this. The combat gets stale very quickly especially if you played through no 1 prior to recap and I honestly don't see how people say its been upgraded or improved dramatically given the time spent developing it. I will still buy and support naughty dog games and it is their vision and creative drive which 9/10 times blows me away, but this is a bit of a failed experiment and what could've been amazing is made quite frankly boring and mediocre by rehashed mechanics and a creative yet misguided narrative Expand

But unfortunately, good graphics don't make for a good game. The plot has more holes than Swiss cheese, the pacing is horrible, the newly introduced characters are thoroughly unlikable, even though the developers try to manipulate the players via pathetic and predictable story beats. Returning characters are being basically abused to push far left propaganda. None of it makes any sense. The entire premise of the first game has been thrown down the drain in favor of nonsense. The ending is arguably one of the worst and most unsatisfying in video game history.

In terms of gameplay, The Last of Us Part II is mediocre at best. The entire loop of stealth, knife kills and looting becomes dull and repetitive very quickly. Not to mention the annoying quick times events. The first game wasn't a revelation in the gameplay department, but the captivating story was the major driving force to push forward. This is not the case anymore.

Overall, The Last of Us Part II is a prime example for the definition of "style over substance". A huge disappointment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Going to be fair about this... have a great fun on this game, but i am extreme dessapointed. My critic its not about the base of the story. Vengance; Ellie against the tortures of joel. Its simple and strong for a videogame. My critic is about the plot. Im excluding technical, graphic and inventory aspects. Love those. And of course the IA (the only criticable about the 1st last of us it is same here).. 1st: play with abby..what a horrible character to play with, not charming not funny not grace. They make you hate her, then force you to empathice and worst of all, gave her the best gameplay parts. Never engage with the character or even like it. What a waste..
    2. The characters are kind of stupid: joel and tommy gave the names to the everyone they met (hi im joel.. maybe you heard abbout me. kill thousands. Someone you knew maybe) . then tommy says to ellie in the theater: "its over" and insist to come back to jackson. But then (in jackson) he aforce ellie to hunt abby once again. All because he cant? So tommy (one of my most love character) is a coward.

    3. When abby is about to begin torture joel, they gave you the impression they know each other (but never do). It will be much better that naughty dog work on a dark past of joel (that he torture abby or someone close to her), that way they give logic to the decissions of abby. But no. She tortures joel without regret and joel only shot his dad because his dad threaten him. So much anger in abby doesnt fit. Could fit if she still a bad **** but no, they insist in humanice abby, the antagonist. So redundand. Why cannot her and her group be just evil people.. on the end all of the people ellie kills has his motives and families.. so better do a game of friendship.
    4. Hate that ellie talks abbout abby as "abby" and abby (about joel) as "joel".. by their names.. are they so close? So incoherent. Once again forcing the bond with player (us) and abby (the ****)
    5. Last but not least.. you pardon abby? After you kill half the planet seeking her, you forgive her? Why?

I think they should work something simplier. Learn abbout game of thrones mistakes. And not try to get impresive, remember that first is a video game that you should like to play. And not a movie you should like to watch.

    Sorry my ingles

The graphics of the game are amazing, the audio and visuals are the best part of it. In my opinion it falls on the story aspect. The first game did that alot better. Characters act stupid just so that the plot could continue and the ending.. I don't like it at all.. It would have been alot better in my opinion if the player had been given an option, Kill Abby or don't. Plus, if there were choices that affected the story... There aren't. The story is the same pretty much on every gameplay. Joel dies, Ellie goes for revenge. Abby is crucified or something and they duke it out until it ends. Virtually every time you encounter infected it is in a closed dark space, where you see the world through the circle of light that is your torch. It’s forces a particular style of play on you (if you can see what you’re doing.) It’s also predictable: every time you find ammunition you can be sure you’ll soon be coming up against infected, normally in a cellar. They also seem to miraculously appear out of nowhere. Your movements are slow. Switching weapons is an unnecessary ordeal and getting stuck in (yet another) dark basement detracts from the story. The problem is there are too many sequences like this. They’re just unimaginative. You feel cheated and it interrupts the narrative. The story is an heroic and sincere attempt at driving the narrative forward from the first game. However there are a few too many flashbacks. The use of ‘notes’ lying around telling you the zombie apocalypse is a bad thing gets tedious. Some of the flashbacks are genuinely well crafted. The game treads a fine line between sentimentality and an exploration of relationships between the different characters and factions. Yes I know it’s a game. So was the first one and that was brilliant. That is to say unpretentious. I’m glad I’m playing it and I would recommend it. You can make up your own mind.

I was so looking forward to this.

...what I DO NOT like about this is how much time we spend with Abby. STOP!!! I dont dislike her character and I even loved playing with her at times. I do think we needed to spend more time with Ellie. The Ellie to Abbie ratio is off. Motivations were clear and understandable. I didnt care to play as Abby after she killed our beloved Joel. After that it felt like Abby was shoved in my face. But I justdidnt care. Joel should have died after we spent time with Abby and began liking her. Joel's death may have made sense on paper this way and I can even accept it. It was out of place here and was far too early. The game itself was almost copy and paste from the first one minus some small tweaks here and there. I dont understand the death threats and the super negative things posted. I love Naughty Dog. However I dont think I'm going to replay this one. Just due to the fact I know I wont spend time with Ellie and Joel. Maybe I could have grown to like Abby more if she didn't kill Jpel so early. I wanted to attach myself to Abby more but in the end I couldn't talk myself into it. I hate that I didnt love this one. Thanks for the effort Naughty Fog but this wasn't what any of us were expecting. And I mean that in the bad way. I know it's not the job to give us everything we want. I also think it is part of the job to take care of the characters. That unfortunately was not done. ....but I wholeheartedly think it's because of the reasons I listed. I do think alot of love and care went into this game. I had no issues with sexual orientation or appearance.

Unfortunately that was not the case for the second installment, putting the politics aside it was a far cry from what the first game managed to achieve. Yes the graphics and gameplay is better, that is not in question but instead of using those improvements in gameplay it lacks the deep engaging heartfelt story beats that naughty dog managed to perfect in the first. At no point did I feel connected to any of the characters in fact I dident even recognise the ones I knew so well. I found myself bored at various stages of the game, just playing to get through it, this was not an enjoyable experience in any way. It's not a zero out of ten and it's certainly not a ten, anyone that rates it that highly or low have no credibility whatsoever. The last of us part two is an average game trying to be a masterpiece and it tries too hard and fails equally as hard. There is a political side to this game that strangely has absolutely nothing to do with this game but of society. If you feel you need to bully people into buying a game or liking a game you are a despicable human being much like some of those characters displayed in this game ironically. It's okay not to like an idea or a creation, it's also okay to love it.

In conclusion this game does nothing different, nothing unique apart from highlight the flaws in the personalities of the people who review it, create it and play it.

However it actually revolves around finding inner peace and forgiveness. This is a good concept executed poorly, as I could not relate to any of the characters; Abby is a muscular woman that can and WILL break you in bed, Ellie has become an arrogant little ****. I have to admit killing Joule made me sad, however it is understandable because it’s a major plot event. I have to admit I played purely for the gameplay, but even then my gameplay was ruined because I had to stare awkwardly at the screen next to my mom BOTH times when Ellie and Dina was getting pretty handsy AND when Abby got porked from behind...therefore I give it a lowish score...The sex was unwanted and uncalled for. An extremely good-looking game with tight controls and a fun gameplay loop that suffers from writers too concerned about specific characters and not enough about others. An example: Jesse, a new character that (contrary to the opinion of many) I actually quite liked and was made out to be a very important part of the story was killed, and nobody gave a damn. The ending was clearly the way it was exclusively to ensure the game could have a sequel if they so wanted to, which is alright, but considering Ellie killed hundreds of people just to get a shot at Abby, had her on the ropes, then decided to let her go? **** writing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Functionally, the game plays well. It’s more or less the exact same gameplay, crafting, and combat as the first game with some tweaks. It looks great, for the most part. No glitches or bugs, so that’s always a relief. Unfortunately, the story structure didn’t do it for me. I understand what they attempted to do, I respect the ambition, but the way the story unfolded made me unable to empathize with Abby or anyone she was involved with.

There must have been another way to accomplish this by telling the story in a different order or by maybe not revealing who murdered Joel exactly or why. Then slowly revealing it as the game went on. I’m not sure, but realizing that I was going to have to play 10-15 hours of this game as Joel’s murderer wasn’t a fun time. I wanted to kill Abby a few hours in and I wanted to kill Abby at the very end. Nothing changed for me. I cheered when Tommy ended Manny. Maybe I’m the psychopath.

Also, was it just me or was this game less scary and tense compared to the first one? I guess because it’s literally the exact same enemy selection as the original with a variation of a new one and a new boss. Were Stalkers new? Two new enemies if so. Also docked some points for being forced to kill normal uninfected dogs. Petty? Maybe. I don’t remember if I had to kill dogs in the original. I put about 60 hours into it since I did New Game+ and got all the collectibles.

It’s a really well made game, but as I described above, it was a really unfulfilling story and left me never wanting to see another game in this franchise again. Which is too bad because the original is one of the best games I’ve ever played. I kind of wish this story had never been told and this game never made now.

Expand

There were some stand out moments and some intense gameplay, but they were few and far between and nothing better than the first game. Also, it was boring. I found myself looking at my phone during cutscenes, I never did this during the first game because I was engaged with the characters. I did not care about the characters in TLOU2. In fact, I did not like them, even characters from the first game I had grown attached to, I now disliked.

Also, very concerning this game has received so many ‘masterpiece’ reviews when there is obviously a lot of issues that any critic would recognise, let alone professional game reviewers.

First of all its a great game, I enjoyed the majority of my time I played but unfortunately its not nearly as gripping as the tale told in the first The Last Of Us.

First of all he combat I did actually enjoy quite a bit, it felt hard hitting and visceral which is super satisfying, each arrow shot looked like it really impacted each and every enemy, the mechanics with dodging and attacking I haven't seen elsewhere, so great work in that respect.

The graphics and environments are stunning as expected from Naughty Dog, the detail is crazy with every corner and crevice filled with overgrown plants and details and truly makes you feel as if you are in a post apocalyptic world. Truly pushes the PS4 to its limits whilst keeping a stable experience.

Unfortunately now we have to move onto the story, which I didn't think I would have to say about a The Last of Us title, but its not very good, pretty bad in fact, and that is it separated from the spectacle of the first game. It feels really messy with a constant, jarring shift in perspective between characters, some who Naughty Dog really want you to care about, so much so that whole sections, or even the whole of the story will just seem terrible if you don't care enough about them. In comparison, The Last of Us gave us Ellie and Joel to relate with and even if you somehow didn't like the characters you still understood that there is a mission to be done to help the human race. Here there isn't any of that and completely relies on you caring hard for those characters with no story backbone but that. I can see what Naughty Dog attempted with this style of story telling but unfortunately it didn't succeed and I really had to force myself through the latter part of the game...

There's alot more I could say about the story but that would start getting into spoiler territory and that's isnt what this is for. So overall I would say 6.5/10 but due to the rating system here I feel as if I would be stretching too hard to give this game a 7/10 so for me, here it takes a 6.

    Pros:
    > Satisfying combat with visceral fighting.
    > Gorgeous environments and amazing graphics.

    Cons:
    > Storyline was ambitious but didnt meet the bar to keep me hooked.
    > Emotional attachment to the characters were relied on too heavily for the story, and I didn't feel
emotionally invested in them for the story to hit its beats.

I saw the critic reviews and am honestly shocked, it feels more and more difficult to trust them these days. I can totally understand if someone happened to enjoy this game, but seeing an insane amount of reviews saying 9/10 or 10/10 is kind of shocking that these are the people who rate these games. Always read user reviews before purchasing a game! We aren't paid off like many critics actually are, we are just real gamers like yourself who are emotionally invested in purchasing a game.

I hope Naughty Dog learn from this and improve for their next adventure.

    - Sam

note: I would only recommend buying this game once it is on offer for around $30 max. If you are looking for a different PS4 game to play now before the PS4's life cycle is over I highly recommend Ghost of Tsushima, masterpiece of this generation.

I'm honest this game isn't that good. Story is not great and it has forgettable side characters. Graphics are great, gameplay is almost same as the first one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is truly beautiful in terms of its graphics. The environment, character models, weapons and the cut scenes are really a tribute to the designers. Your eyes will feast on the incredible aesthetic of this game. Along with its visual beauty, the soundtrack put behind every moment is remarkable. The deafening screams of your most recently shot enemy or the gentle and calm plucks on Ellie’s guitar will satisfy your desire to be immerse in this post-apocalyptic world. At times, especially during the most violent scenes the sound track is frighteningly realistic. Gun shots, screams, blood dripping and much more to leave you uneasy in your seat whilst playing. The gameplay itself has some clunky moments, switching weapons in the heat of a fire fight was sometimes awkward and usually resulted in getting shot in the head or ripped apart by a Clicker. Although clunky sometimes, for the most part the firefights and deadly battles with infected were high energy and full of adrenaline but naturally fluid. There were so many times I was on the edge of my seat desperate to get through a bloody encounter with Ellie’s foes. The weapons are fantastic and you use different weapons depending on whether you are playing as Ellie or Abby which is a nice difference to the gameplay but I’m a little disappointed that in my opinion Abby got nearly all the best weapons. This game gives you shotguns, Molotov cocktails, Pipe bomb, Revolvers, Rifles, Bows and crossbows and even more to help you survive the horror of the Last of Us Part II. Dark hallways, fungus-infested rooms and desolate buildings make for a terrifying adventure through Seattle. As well as the high energy moments there were times of tension, anxiety and true fear as you try to navigate on to your next objective. This game is certainly not for the faint of heart. However, as much as the game has its positives it also has some big negatives. For many of us the Last of Us was a masterful story. It made us laugh, cry and cry some more and maybe even just smile a little at the wholesome moments. This is what people waited 7 years to see the sequel to. It fair to say the story took a rather harsh turn for me. The first half of the story is mostly good and at the 2 hour mark we see Joel butchered by Abby and that drives a hatred for her immediately. This move really twists up the story as you are forced to play as her later on. Abby is supposed to be the one we hate but we are lead down a road that basically end with “Good and Evil is subjective”. This I find to be an interesting take but it in turn destroys a major part of Ellie’s character in the process especially towards the latter part of the game when Ellie leaves her baby and girlfriend Dina to go and find Abby. The characters should drive the plot but here it seems the plot is driving the characters.
We are introduced to new characters which is great if they actually had serious depth. The new characters in the story have very little backstory and I was waiting and waiting for the character to shine through! Unfortunately, the parts when they actually do they are killed before we can learn much more about them. Abby is also a main area I find to be that let’s the story down. Firstly, she is incredibly muscular and especially by most people’s standards. This seems rather silly in the context of the game where survival is paramount, food, water, ammo and fighting for your life should be your top priority. Making muscle gains is very much a 1st World passion and interest that requires a strict diet regime, regular exercise and plenty of time to recover from your workout. Not such luxury would probably exist in a world full of constant danger. Not only that but there are very few women that are capable of even reaching that muscle size in the world right now and all in all it seems implausible
Owen is a new character that is introduced to us as a friend of Abby. I might even enjoy Owen as a character if I didn’t immediately feel disgusted by the fact he actively cheats on his pregnant girlfriend Mel. Mel is a character fighting for the WLF and is a friend of Abby and for some reason everyone is okay with a pregnant woman to go on dangerous missions in a combat zone. Why?! The WLF is mentioned to have thousands of members and seemingly none of them would make a safer and more suitable candidate? Another example of a situation that is ridiculous given the context. Rounding up, the Last of Us Part II can be described as a “Beautiful, Messy Fun”. This game has serious issues around the plot which leave you very confused but the game is fundamentally enjoyable to play. I wouldn’t recommend buying it if the story is the only reason you want to play. I hope to see Naughty Dog expand on the story and tie up the loose ends of the story as it left me dieing to see it resolved.

Naughty Dog(or we can say Neil Druckman) is too proud to tell a story well. A good story is not rare. But how to tell it well,it's the key point. 7 years ago, Naughty Dog give us a perfect answer. But now, they lost the talent.

I wish i had so much more to say here. This game is a 10/10 in nearly everything EXCEPT for the story. Which, in a game like this, is absolutely the most important thing you have to nail down. If the same story had been structured in a much different way I think this game could reach the 9 and 10 that Naughty dog usually deserves, but unfortunately when you betray the characters we love by them acting in ways that go against who they are...you leave the door open for a story that cannot connect in the way it was envisioned for the audience. I came away wanting to love this and I truly enjoyed the game, but I was just so disappointed in the narrative. Expand

The thing people wanted to play this game for, the story, is an incredible let down. It suffers from what most things suffer from these days: subversion of expectations. There are a million ways this story could've been told I'm an amazing way. Instead, they take the route of Game of Thrones, Star Wars, etc. And subvert audience expectations and ruin what should've been a classic franchise. I wish I would've never played this game to be honest. If you love the first game, you may want to think about passing on this one, especially if you're invested in the story. Expand

I feel this game pushing me so hard to feel the good-woman Abby, Incontast Ellie like the bad girl.
The whole story made Ellie a lot looser as the PTSD trilogy lost everything, lost fingers, disabled, lost ability to play guitar. Losing lovers and families (Dina and JJ)
This is the main character that fans love. she would get anything better than these ending.
Personally, if finishing like this I'd rather end it at the farm. Joel would prefer Ellie to live happily. Not losing everything like this
The ending background in Menu bar is a hopeful for Abby and Lev. The director was biased. Hopeful for Abby but the despond for Ellie

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
