On the one hand, the graphics and sound design are undeniably fantastic - industry leading for what a developer can accomplish on a current-gen console, to be sure.

On the other hand, the story and characters are tumblr fanfiction-tier. Plot holes everywhere, characters who are utterly unhinged, irrational, completely despicable, and impossible to relate to if you're even remotely well-adjusted. Coupled with the fact that they're being played by actors, who, by their performances illustrate that they've never gone through real hardship or horror makes for a final group of performances that, while basically competent, still fall off as insincere and unbelievable.

To solidify this game's place in the middle of the road comes the gameplay. Bog-standard AAA "stealth" mixed with somewhat chunky gunplay, and all of it marred by "I am in love with my animations" syndrome that so many AAA developers seen to suffer terribly from in recent years makes the gameplay in and of itself wholly unremarkable and translates into a forgettable experience.

The environments, while very pretty and full of detail, feel like video game levels more than they do organic settings, and do extremely little more than make a player stop for a few seconds to take a screenshot and move on without much second thought.

For brevity's sake I will stop it here, because you get the gist. This is the game. A hundred-million dollar project that feels like the entire budget was spent on the graphics/sound team, and then left to some college student interns to write, direct and produce. College interns who think that Twitter and the CW are the pinnacle of cultural and artistic insight.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I tried so hard to like this game. Honestly, this is by far the most disappointing, depressing , Poorly written story I've ever played in a video game. The game had major pacing problems, everytime you reach a climatic moment, like the ending, its another 10 hour flashback. another flashback, after another flashback after another. They could have told the story better,, alot better. They ruin joels character and **** on him, he never speaks up or tells ellie why he did what he did. ellie doesn't kill abby in the end. Which is dumb, and abby goes all the way to the theater to kill ellie for killing her friends and then doesn't kill her.. it makes no **** sense.. abby never tells ellie why he did it, she just walks off. Nobody cares about abby! And all the focus is on abby. We came here for ellie and joel. Ellie has turned into a broken non likeable character. If your a big fan of the last of us, dont buy this. Neil should never write a story again, oh its also really boring Expand

Graphics - 10/10
This is easily the best looking game running on ps4 and it is a technical achievement for it to be running smoothly on a 7 years old console
    Music - 8/10
This had some really great songs and osts but they decided to no use them during gameplay moments, would have loved to listen to them if implemented correctly like death stranding
    World Building - 9/10
Always used to just stand and awe at the sceneries, this game has one of the best map design but also felt repetitive coming near to the end
    Gameplay - 6.5/10
Its the same **** gameplay from the previous game, there is barely anything new added to make the gameplay feel any better. It felt good enough for the first game but they should have tried something new. Also the **** rope man, that **** is awesome and they didnt decide to use it much, they could have made such good puzzles from it, and what happened to the traps? they were there for the first few hours but they removed it completely from the game after it. Some of the set pieces were the highlight of the game but there were only few to keep me interested, just like marvel spiderman(ps4)
    Story - 3/10
Oh boy, the story is less than mediocre, the simple revenge is bad tactic applied all over in the game. If this game didnt have the last of us attached to it then it would have been an average game. The story didnt feel right with the last of us universe, all the time i didnt feel like i was playing a last of us game, joel died, that was a great shock point but they kept doing the same **** again and again, you meet a new person, you develop some connection and then they die too, halfway through the game i couldnt care about anyone since i knew the game is going to kill them anyways. and wtf the game used the pregnant card 2-3 times, why tf was mel even parkouring while being 7-8 months pregnant lmao, the whole story, it felt like a kid wrote it and they were too confident with it and decided to move on with it. The flashbacks were the only times i felt like yes this is part of the game but they **** it up too, they jumbled everything, they were ordered very poorly. People say the story was intentional, if it was, it was executed very poorly. There was no outcome of the story, everything got worse till the end and i only felt disappointed at the end, there could be **** millions of children, like abby, of the people joel/ellie killed, now will they make millions of sequels? Even if they dont, im not going to play the sequel anyways.

overall the game makes you feel frustrated alot, upset from the beginning to the end.
    Enjoyment - 4/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first few hours were compelling and emotionally driven but the other 2/3 of the game purely drags two unispired characters in Ellie and Abby. Ellie has been striped of any personality trait and just becomes this emotionally wreckles train from one scene to the other while Abby is the personification of super woman since she can't be hurt by anything or anyone, the only times she cries it seems very forced and for the rest of her scenes and gameplay there is just not enough weight to carry an emotional compelling story. After dragging me through 16 hours of Abby time I find myself in California trying to finally kill the killer of my favorite character. Only to finish with the character who was suppose to kill her setting her free.

Now I get it, I really get the message, it's powerful but because it reconnects to Joel. That final scene were she can't play the guitar correctly because she lost her two fingers, it was heartbreaking but it needed for her to finish what she started even if it cost her what little humanity she had left. That would've been a devastatingly beautiful ending on this crazy world. But here we are, and to be very clear with this, I don't hate this game, I don't hate Abby or any of the new characters, this is not about hate, it's about dissatisfaction with a story that promised a full arc and only delivered half of it. As Joel very well stated: "I wish things would've been differente but they ain't."

This game is emotionally impactful, sure, but not for good reasons. Just because you feel things doesn't mean the writing was amazing. Put me behind the pen of any sequel that has beloved characters, and I can pull out a shotgun and make people feel their feelings. Then they altered Joel and Tommy's characters.. then they force you to play as a character you hate, and that character (I find) is intensely unlikable. Then they end it with maybe my least favorite ending since ME3. Imagine the end of God of War 3, Kratos is about to beat Zeus' face into a pulp, but then has a half second flashback of his smiling family, so instead he gently reaches down and caresses Zeus' face, whispering "I forgive you". This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is a classic sequel that has the almost impossible ahead of it: to match or, if possible, to overcome the original game. Unfortunately, given the fantastic and complex story that the first game was able to tell, this one would probably not have surpassed this milestone anyway, even if it were flawless - and it is really far from that. My simple verdict on the game is: TLOU 2 is a perfect craftsmanship that pays off for some bad story decisions.

I'll start with what probably bites everyone the most from the beginning: the death of Joel. A lot of people say they don't mind the twist as such, but they are dissatisfied with the circumstances - that an experienced and hardened survivor would not be so foolishly trapped, that he would not tell his name to a gang of armed unknown thugs, and so on… however, I do not agree with this. Joel's name was revealed by Tommy, who had always been a little naive, and I don't think they had any other choice of escaping from the rolling hordes of infected than to trust temporary comrades, albeit foreigners. No, in terms of logic, everything is fine. I'm just bothered with that it even happened.

Joel's relationship with Ellie was at least 90% of all TLOU. That was the magic, the geniality of the story. While playing, I was not looking forward to killing the infected or exploring beautifully depicted natural locations, but to more and more interactions and verbal skirmishes between the two main characters. By destroying this basic pillar, the game loses at least half of the interesting things.

Fortunately, this gloomy hundred-times boiled journey of revenge is saved by a new addition to the party - Dina. Or not? Dina is a well-written and well-drawn character, but she simply does not have the care and kindness uncompromisingly hidden under the mask of Joel's harsh inaccessibility. I didn't enjoy her dialogues with Ellie for the most part, and many times did she seemed to me as a story-imposed love object. And although I wasn't thrilled by it at first, I begin to appreciate the innocent Riley, who had at least some depth of character.

Unfortunately, most of the other characters aren't much better off either. The interesting Maria has practically zero space, Jesse shows up almost halfway through the game and ends just as quickly, the only remaining fighter from the Miller family is moved to the other track and it's a shame to talk about Abby at all - she is perhaps the least likeable character, which I have met so far in the games. So in the end, Ellie has to pull it all by herself again.

The second half of the game focuses on Abby and wants to show us her human side, that not all bad guys are bad and that they have their reasons - which doesn't work for four reasons: (1) Because when you just introduce someone as absolute evil, rotten bastard who beats your brain out of your favorite character, you can't expect everyone to forgive him for a few intentionally touching flashbacks. I just don't want to play as a jerk that I still hate just as much no matter how hard the game tries to make me like it. (2) Because the game tries to convince you by force that everyone who used to be "good" is somehow bad and evil - including Joel and Ellie. In fact, he's trying to make you stop loving Joel, or at least start doubting him. But I don't want to - I don't want anyone to ruin the image I created about him. I don't want to think that Abby´s dad was just an innocent doctor and Joel the bastard who killed him without mercy - he may have been a nice guy, but he was also an idiot who went with a scalpel against an armed man. If he didn't intervene like the other doctors, he could have survived… (3) Because then the game loses even the weak drive it had until then: if Abby isn't bad, then who is the villain? So who do we really want to kill? What do we want to achieve? They are all so terribly forced in shades of gray that the game lacks real evil.

In the whole game, I really liked only flashbacks to Ellie's past - especially "Birthday Gift". That was all I wanted from the game, and I don't think I was alone.

And what about the end? The ending is a chapter in itself, but I'll just say that Neil Druckmann's explanation "We had to let Ellie spare Abby to stay human" comes to me at least smiling. So Ellie kills dozens, hundreds of people along the way - cuts her necks, stabs in the stomach, shoots brains - kills a pregnant woman - but will she stay human if she doesn't kill the biggest scum in the game, which is directly responsible for all her suffering? Somewhere I read the analogy that it is as if Thanos found all the stones, but did not snap. Just whaaat? AT MINIMUM I would give a choice to kill/spare when it already has to be, but I find the ending as it is now a disappointment. The fact that the end of first game came to me as an absolutely brilliant and logical conclusion, perhaps one of the best in video game history, is this a decent armband.

The story is very deep, the intention was good to see another side of things, but i really dont like to play as the enemy for half time of gameplay. In my opinion, one or two hours would be enough.

    Sound - 10/10
Gameplay - 7/10 - The gameplay is good, but is largely remains the same from the first game. There are some small changes, like going prone and crawling when in combat, dodging when in melee combat, and new enemy types such as dogs who can track you and some other infected (but probably not enough)

    Story - 5/10

This game in my opinion is insulting to fans of the first game. If you loved the first Last of Us game, you probably won't like this one. In my opinion, this game needlessly tears down the characters of the first game and what made the first game special.

The game takes place 4-5 years after the end of the first Last of Us. Joel and Ellie live in a settlement in Jackson, Wyoming. About two hours into the game, Joel is killed by a character named Abby with a golf club. This sets the main events of the game into motion as you play as Ellie (for the first half of the game), and hunt down Abby and her friends because of what they did to Joel. Later on in the game it is explained that Abby and her friends are former fireflies and that Abby's father was the doctor who was going to perform the surgery on Ellie at the end of the first game, and that Joel killed him when he saved Ellie. Now I understand that there are two sides to every story and that actions have consequences and that there are moral gray areas, especially in the world of The Last of Us. I get from Abby's perspepctive why she killed Joel, and I get that in many ways Joel had it coming. My problem is that the game handles this issue in a very biased way. Yes Joel saved Ellie and ended any chance of a vaccine for the world. I get that he killed a lot of fireflies, but anyone else in that situation would have done the same thing. Also, realistically, the fireflies took and drugged Ellie and gave her no choice in the matter. He saved someone that he loved. If the fireflies did create a vaccine, then realistically they would have kept it for themselves and not given it to everyone else. Anything that can be such a great use for society is always weaponized in some form. I get that it's a morally complex issue, but my biggest problem with this game is that it portrays Joel, Ellie, and even Tommy in such a negative light in favor of these new characters. If the point of the game is to show it from different perspectives, why is it that it feels as though one side is clearly favored over the other? The game could have explored both sides equally and could have portrayed Joel and Ellie in ways where the end of the first game could have been addressed without spitting on Joel as a character and doing the same to Ellie. After Joel dies, Ellie seeks revenge. You play as Ellie for 3 days in Seattle, and them you are forced to play As Abby for those same 3 days. This is where the game really lost me. During Abby's playthrough, the game feels very manipulative in that it tries desperately to make you like and care for Abby and her friends. Instead of presenting it as an equally fair portrayal of revenge, the game makes Ellie seem like a killing machine who is traumatized by her actions, but then goes out of their way to make Abby seem really nice. I get that Ellie and Joel had the first game to flesh out their characters, but this just feels unfair. Abby also gets better weapons and more epic gameplay moments than Ellie does. Naught Dog lied when they made it seem like Joel would have a bigger part to play in the game, and that this would be more of Ellie's story this time around, but that's not really the case. When I played this game, I had no sympathy at all for Abby and any of her friends in the story. Even if I understand their motivations, I did not care one bit about them as characters. Ellie never even gets revenge against Abby, because after everything that happens in the story, Ellie decides to let Abby go. I'm leaving out some details of the story that I can't get into here because I don't have enough room to type about it, but at the end of the day, my consensus is that The Last of Us Part II is one of the most disappointing games that I have ever played. Do not give Naughty Dog your money for this game. If you are a big fan of the first game, then this isn't for you. The story could have been so much more. Again, this game could have explored the complexities of Joel's choice and Joel and Ellie's relationship after the end of the first game in more detail and exploring the other side of the issue without making it feel so one-sided. And if Joel had to die, his death could have been tied to the end of the first game, while still giving the character some justice. Maybe he does get killed by the fireflies, but he does it in a way to give his life for Ellie or something like that. This game could have been so much more. I would ultimately give it a 6 out of 10 because other than the story everything else is done so well, but the story is just too much of a mess.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay and graphics are well done. This is the best looking game on the PS4. The sound design is also great, but the characters and story are terrible and I never thought that this would be the product we got after waiting for 7 years. Joel, the beloved protagonist in the first game is killed off within the first 2 hours of the game and he only gets 10-15 minutes of screentime. How does Joel get killed? Well, he and Tommy rescue this girl named Abby and head back to where her group is staying at to escape from the infected horde that attacked them. For some reason, they think it is a good idea to tell this group of strangers that they just met their names, their relation, where they live, and even invite them over to restock on supplies. But in the first game, Joel doesn't trust anyone and even ran over a guy who faked from being hurt. Also, in the first game, when Ellie met David she doesn't trust him at all even after they survive an infected horde attacking them. So apparently Joel and Tommy have lost their survivor instincts and trust anyone they come across and tell them everything about themselves and invite them over. Well turns out that this gets Joel killed because the girl he rescued from the horde wanted to kill him. She kills him with a golf club while Ellie watches her and begs her not to do it. And for some reason, they decide not to kill Tommy or Ellie despite knowing Tommy just told them that Joel was his brother and knowing Ellie was somehow close to Joel because how Ellie begs Abby to spare his life and reacts to his death. The only reason why the writers didn't kill off Ellie and Tommy here is because they have a story to tell. I cannot believe how bad this writing is so far. Anyway, Ellie wants revenge and travels to Seattle so she can "KIll every last one of them." She does kill every person involved in Joel's death except Abby who was the one who actually killed Joel. She had the chance to kill Abby, but she decides to let her go because she thinks revenge is bad now. Imagine playing God of War 3 and Kratos is trying to get revenge on the Greek Gods for doing him wrong. He kills every god except Zeus who was the main one he wanted to kill. Zeus is almost dead and Kratos is like "No, I'm done. You can go." Or your watching John Wick and John Wick goes after the guy who stole his car and killed his puppy. He kills about a hundred people and when he gets to the guy who stole his car and killed his puppy and is about to kill him he is like "No, I'm good." and walks away. That is the ending of The Last Of US 2. Also, the game makes you play as Abby and tries to show you she is a good person. They make you try to feel sorry for her, but it fails so hard because you don't care about her since she killed Joel. I like how they make Abby seem like she's the good character and Ellie is evil, but Abby gets her revenge when Ellie doesn't. Really? Everyone would think the exact opposite. The game's message is trying to teach you revenge is bad and it'll cause pain and push everyone away from you. But again it fails because Abby got her revenge and got what she wanted at the end of the game which was to go off with a boy she met named Lev and Ellie doesn't get her revenge but she loses everything which was her girlfriend Dina, the baby that Dina had with her ex, Tommy, Joel, 2 of her fingers, and the ability to play the guitar. The ending literally contradicts the message the story is trying to tell you. The writing is a joke. I will not buy part 3 if they ever make one, I will never trust critic reviews again, and if they decide to make Uncharted 5 I will not buy it until I see reviews of it by other gamers and not trust the reviews by critics. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

GRAPHICAL FIDELITY / ATTENTION TO DETAIL 8/10 - No surprise here, graphics are top notch, facial animations are dope, everything looks great.... for the most part

STORY 1/10 - For those who were emotionally invested in TLOU and the characters of Joel and Ellie, the plotline, story structure, and characterisation of TLOU2 completely fails to present a satisfying experience

I'm not saying every game has to be happy, and have happy ending or whatever. Telltales TWD, LIMBO, Shadow of the Colossus, Spec Ops: The Line... all of these games had tragic endings and a relatively sorrowful tone throughout. Yet why is the story of these games fantastic, whereas TLOU2 isn't so.
The game uses cheap, artificial, manipulative story mechanics, instead of intelligent or thoughtful characterisation, to garner sympathy for Abby.
For example when playing as Ellie, you are FORCED to:
    (1) kill dogs
    (2) murder screaming wailing people, whose loved ones mourn and cry in terror (making you feel bad about killing them)
    (3) murder a pregnant woman
Whereas when you are playing as Abby, you are FORCED to
    (1) play and have fun with dogs
    (2) defend yourself against evil scary transphobic jungle people
    (3) save kids
People who enjoy the story are confusing SKILFUL DIRECTION with CHEAP MANIPULATION. People seem to be forgetting the Abby is a fundamentally EVIL, IMMORAL character that doesn't deserve sympathy
    In Ellie's darkest moments, she:
    (1) attacks a woman who, aside from being involved in her fathers death, also further titilates and aggravates Ellie by saying Joel died like a little **** Reacting with rage and impetus, she beats the woman up with a metal pipe. However, Ellie is visibly traumatised and shaken by the event, she comes back and is clearly distressed and troubled
    (2) kills a woman who she later finds out is pregnant. When finding out, Ellie's hearing fades, she collapses and starts hyperventilating; clearly disturbed, remorseful and regretful
    In Abby's darkest moments, she:
    (1) shoots an old man in the knee, who just previously saved her life and was completely friendly and warm to her. She proceeds to take VISCERAL PLEASURE in beating him with a golf club, torturing him for so long that she eventually she grows exhausted and needs to remove her jumper. She delivers the killing blow right in front of a screaming girl who begs for his life
    (2) smashes a girls face, and upon finding out that the girl is pregnant, Abby takes immense PLEASURE AND SATISFACTION at the prospect of slitting her throat.
Both girls enact their darkest moments under the impetus of revenge, but it is clear which character takes pleasure in the idea of inflicting pain. Once you understand this, any meaning the story holds completely withers away. TLOU2 is not a satisfying or entertaining story experience, nor is it a story that even needed to be told, given how many other movies, games, books, TV shows have conveyed the consequences of revenge theme better.

Overall 16/30 = 5/10 - not even close to TLOU 10/10 rating and a completely underwhelming venture from Naughty Dog

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went in to The Last of Us 2 expecting nothing, yet still I am left disappointed and feeling empty.

TLoU2 attempts to say a whole lot, but ends up saying nothing new, meaningful or emotionally resonant. The entire concept of "the cycle of revenge is bad" is not new or profound, yet can be still be told well, this game however, does not tell that story well. When the game drops the meaningless BS about revenge it really shines, I like pretty much every character here, even Abby. Abby, Lev, Ellie, Dina, Jesse, they all enhance this game tenfold, but unfortunately much of Abby's story is spent trying to force you to like her, rather than letting it happen naturally. Having you play with Alice the dog as Abby but forcing you to kill her as Ellie, making Abby's dad some paragon who helps zebras and loves his daughter, and wow everybody loves him so much, it feels forced and unnatural. When Abby is left with Lev, a young boy she befriends, she's great, their chemistry is amazing and it's the closest the game ever gets to feeling like The Last of Us again, but it is a relatively short part of the experience. Jesse unceremoniously killed in a blink and you'll miss it scene, and it kinda sucks, Dina is sidelined HARD and rarely gets to be a character again afterwards, Tommy is also there but hardly interacts with Ellie outside of the start and end, where he's turned into a jaded c*nt, oh boy, thanks game, it's not enough that you killed the characters I liked, you gotta f*ck up one of the only ones you left alive, cool, great, thanks. Then there's Ellie, she starts off strong, her chemistry with everybody is great, Dina, Jesse... Joel... But it's all either cut short or underutilized to a depressing degree but by the end, she makes two of the most bafflingly stupid decisions and choses to not only abandon everything she has with Dina and their kid J.J, which I believe is Jesse Jr. though I don't think it's ever explicitly stated, to travel to Santa f*cking Barbara, to kill Abby, but also chooses to not even kill her at the end, so Ellie is left with literally nothing, Joel is gone, Dina and the baby are gone, Jessie is gone, Tommy sucks and she can't play the guitar anymore because Abby bit her fingers off. It's just misery porn by the end, and it's not even good misery porn, it's just deflating and frustrating. I didn't want Abby to die, I like Abby, **** it makes no sense for Ellie to let her live after she's carved through countless WLF members, Scars and Rattlers not 10 goddamn minutes ago.

The game also fails miserably to use the fact it's a video game to it's advantage at all. Like I said earlier the theme of "Revenge bad" is not new or profound, but can be told well, and TLoU2 had a golden opportunity to use it's medium and the interactivity that comes with it to make it profound, yet it doesn't. The one time it does do this is with a dog named Bear. You can kill Bear as Ellie, though it is not required, it's a choice you the player must make, and later as Abby, you can play with Bear, again, you don't have to. So both times you interact with Bear are optional, and it's great. I did kill Bear and I felt awful about it because for ONCE the game used my choices as the player to make me feel bad and it worked amazingly, so why does it never do this again? It gives enemy NPC's names now and they're rarely repeated, except for the Scars, I heard the name "Angel" like 5 times, but for the WLF, I don't think I ever encountered duplicate names, but it never talks about "Jeff" who got his face blown off by some chick with a tattoo, not once, not ever, it only tries to guilt trip you about things out of your control, which fails because it wasn't my choice to stab Mel and kill her and her unborn child, it was Ellies, I didn't do that, so why should I feel bad? The game fails to give you reason to regret your actions more than once because every action it tries to make you regret, was not your action, it was the games.

The gameplay is actually pretty good, it's really fun so at least the game is fun, which is one of the most important aspects in my opinion. Gunplay is brutal and satisfying, you can clean house with Ellie's shotgun and at times you feel unstoppable, the gore is suitably disgusting and graphic, and had me stop a few times to just stare in morbid fascination with how well this dudes brain designed. Graphically the game is a technical marvel, it's jaw-dropping, I just wish we didn't have to resort to crunch to get there.

In conclusion, TLoU2 is not without merit, but I think the bad far outweighs the good with a bad story, disappointing characters and some downright awful character assassination for both Ellie and Joel. To sum things up: I'm not mad, just disappointed.

This game is the perfect example of what not to do to a sequel of a game. the reason why it doesnt get a 1 is because the game looks stunning, and they atleast made the combat less clunky, but everything else is just not good. the story is very poorly written. im playing about half of the game as the person who kills joel. which would be okay i guess if it was done good but it wasnt the game has plot holes. all these charcters including abby are just so boring and thrown in your face telling you to care. None of the new characters are interesting so when most of them died i just stared blank staring at my monitor thinking when the **** do we meet someone we give a **** about. Combat is better but the enemy types get really boring to fight against, not alot of new enemies really that make a drastic change to differ from the regualr combat loop gameplay that gets old after the first 7 hours. the enemy A.I. is really bad for 2020 standards of AAA gaming. Ican be taking down someone right infront of another enemy A.I and they just stare sometimes they see you but most of the time they dont. Most of the game as Abby was not very fun at all. They try to shape her as a character and make you sympathize with her but yet again why would i care for someone who killed one of the main characters from the last game. overall the game is lack luster if your the many people who bought the game for a great story and solid gameplay your going to miss it here. do not trust the main stream critics on this one over all the game is bad. gameplay is stuck in the past with a story that is so distant from the first last of us. if you like the gameplay from the first that much you might enjoy this game but from a story stand point its a mess, all over the place with some plot holes and questions that still leave thinking how certain things got some places . overall not worth buying unless in bargin bin Expand

I don't want to give this game an even lower score but considering that the last of us heavily relies on its story I can't give it anything better.

It opts to go for the bleakest possible outcomes in every scenario. It glorifies its misery. It cynically and naively assumes the worst of humanity out of literally every single person left in the world.

The game wants you to understand there are multiple sides to every story/person but in doing so, it forces that down your throat while almost ignoring all attempts at developing other parts of the story. An example of this is when Abby kills Joel towards the beginning of the game without (to the knowledge of the player) any reason. This immediately makes the player despise the character, regardless of what justifications they may have in the future. It makes the player completely unable to empathize with Abby getting her revenge. But it constantly tries to make her more likeable and more human in most of her scenes, while at the same time making Ellie and Joel look as bad as possible.

Then there's that ending. Put simply, "revenge is bad" but only if you're Ellie. Whereas Abby gets hers and more.

The entire game is just the player watching helplessly and annoyed as the characters make bad decision after bad decision that you don't want them to make. It removes player agency entirely,

    For a story-driven game, the story was a let-down.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2 presents one of the most beautiful and detailed renditions of a post apocalyptic world probably in any form of media ever. The gameplay is very similar to the first game, but is expanded upon and very solid. These areas of the game are easily a 10/10 and we should appreciate the work that went into creating this world by the hard work of those at Naughty Dog despite shortcomings in the story. My biggest complaint about the story is how it retcons the original while the characters are dumbed down. For example, one of the biggest moral dilemmas in the original game was Joel’s choice to save Ellie from being killed to possibly create a cure. Audio logs in the game, however, make it clear that the chances of making a cure are bad (for context, we don’t have a cure for fungal infections in real life) and even if possible, the prospects of the Fireflies being competent enough to manufacture and distribute such a cure are even lower. The second game completely retcons this by making it seem as if a cure were guaranteed somehow, ignoring the rules and science established in the game and real world. Thus, Joel’s morally grey decision is replaced with ‘Joel take cure from world, Joel bad.’ Unfortunately, retroactively dumbing down the plot of the original game isn’t the limit of this game’s story. The story is disjointed and makes the mistake of trying to tell a simple story through complex means. The story boils down to ‘revenge bad’ but the story writers thought it necessary to introduce a new playable character and flashbacks within flashbacks to make us somehow understand why the developers made the decision to kill the most beloved character from the first game. This all fails and leaves the ending feel undercooked. I think they wanted us to feel empathy for Abby somehow but she is disliked by literally every character in the story and players irl. However, Abby’s story arch is completely asynchronous to the theme of the story and conflicts completely with the dark outcome for Ellie. I don’t know what the writers were thinking introducing a new player character. It’s been tried before in Metal Gear Solid 2&5, Halo 2&5, and if the pattern holds in the Last of Us 2 &5. In each of these instances the writers failed to give the player more of what they liked in the original by forcing them to play as a character they don’t care about. The only instance of this working I can think of is Red Dead Redemption 2 with the introduction of Arthur Morgan but that was helped by the fact you had a level of autonomy over the moral choices Arthur makes along with the fact that the sequel adds to the story of the original, not retracting from it. In summary, everything but the story is good. It might be worth playing eventually once it drops in price but the game length is short to begin with along with the fact the story is underwhelming and destroys a lot of your motivation to progress through the game.

As a massive fan of the first part I feel violated and manipulated, it feels like some scenes were done because ND knew that they'd get emotions out of fans like that easily. The overall tone of the game is just extremely sad and depressing. Neil Druckmann in an interview even said, when asked whether the player is deliberately made feel bad, that yes, players should not have fun with this game.

In the end everything that was great about the first part has been tarnished for no reason, no conclusion and most importantly a (what feels like) really cheap and cheesy message.

If you liked the first game for the characters and their relationships, this game is probably not for you. I hate myself for saying this, but I wish this game was never made. Again, as a huge fan of the first part it pains me so so much, if however you're new to the franchise or loved the first game for its gameplay this'll be a great (as far as a depressing story can go) experience for you. The game is not a complete disaster but doesn't even come close to his predecessor.

The game almost seems to be directed and written by different people who have completely different views on what the first game was, what it was about, and the justification for the things that the characters did in that setting.

This game took a turn basically the way GoT did. The first seasons were well fleshed out and thoughtful then in the last few seasons it seems like a completely different entity. This is exactly the way TLOU2 feels while playing. Its the same "show" just in essence just completely different from what came before it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m glad naughty dog wanted to try something different with the perspective of characters and it really developed the post apocalyptic very well through doing this; however, in some parts it went way too far. I didn’t mind playing as abby for the most part. As for joel dying, It was pretty sad how it happened so easily for him and it was pretty much fate. As the story unfolded, however, it was pretty clear that he deserved to die, at least Abby had good motivation to do so. Joel’s death really motivated me as well, to go kill every single person involved. I was so angry and furious and heartbroken, that when i played as Ellie seeking revenge i truly wanted to kill all of them, i didnt even care, i thought well, i don’t mind joel dying as long as i can kill every last one of them, to me his death would be worth it. Then we got to play as abby. Of course i disliked abby, but it was nice to see into the life of another community and see that they are very human. I think they could have made abby so much more likable though, she wasn’t even liked by her friends that much and i don’t know, i feel like if you make someone kill joel then make us play that character you better make that character even more likeable than ellie, and they kind of failed at that for me at least. Despite that, playing as abby was interesting and made me feel at least a little empathy for her, yet i still hoped for revenge against her which is why i didn’t mind playing as her. This was until my least favorite part of the game came...they made us play as abby, and beat the **** out of ellie. Honestly it was the worst part of the game for me and if this wasn’t in it i would have loved the game so much more. It upset me that the character i wanted revenge against the most beat up the character that was so beloved by me and the character i was rooting for throughout the game, and i had to do it. It was
honestly so messed up to me. After that, i felt sick to my stomach and just wanted to stop playing. How does naughty dog expect us to like that part of the game? Why do they think our interests to beat up ellie would aline with abby’s when you showed her brutally kill joel? I was so disappointed and i just wanted to stop, but i continued. Honestly i just wanted to be over with it, but of course we got sent back to try and find abby, I’m not sure if i cared anymore, at this point i disliked the writers more than abby for making me do that to ellie. Then we finally find abby and we beat her but we decide not to kill her. I didn’t hate the ending but i can’t say i understood why ellie
chose that...i think she realized joel really was a ****ty person and possibly took away the vaccine from man kind (based on the flash back that happened at the end) but she loved him too, and the reason she was even living was because of him and she knew that. I don’t know, honestly i wish we killed abby, but we both have gone through so much **** i don’t know if i even cared anymore.

But upon playing it with no spoilers going into it I was super disappointed with this product. Graphics were fantastic but We all expected it to be. The story however is awful, truly awful. So many plot holes and dumb choices. And no people I haven’t got a problem with there being trans and gay people leading the game or a woman leading it. Ellie is an amazing character or should I say was an amazing character but man how can you do my man Joel so dirty like this. It’s not even the fact he died cause I expected that but the way you guys done it was just awful. Here’s an idea, why couldn’t he go out in a similar fashion to Arthur Morgan from RDR2?? Also **** abbey, honestly the very worst character I’ve ever seen and as for the cringe sex scene.....Jesus we get it and again this isn’t a problem with her being trans. When it was over and the ending was not satisfying or even a hook to make me care if there is DLC, I docked one last point for that and one particularly horrible scene that I feel should have bumped the game up to Adults Only on ESRB.

I won't join either herd on this take of a hotly debated game. The critics and the audience are both annoying and I've gained a lot more reliable information from playing the game, myself. It is just barely better than adequate on its own and earned all six of my points. But through the lens of nostalgia, I can understand why some users would give it a "3" when comparing it to the prequel and the prequel's DLC.

This game looks amazing especially if playing in HDR the looks and the attention to detail everything thats visuall within the game looks amazing and ND nails it here. But lets beat around the bush this game hurts through sorrow and hate the same that goes through each and every one of our minds that has played this game the way Joel died, the way Ellie and others went after the WLF to avenge Joel and the journey that has left Ellie completely broken, alone and lost for me it definitely worries me what will happen to all the characters, Dina and JJ what will happen to Ellie and this is my opinion what will happen to Abby and Lev. But let's get down to it who's right and who's wrong Joel for killing abbys dad in the first game or Abby for killing Joel in the second game that's lost me because if Joel didn't have killed abbys dad they wouldn't have been this game but that fact Joel cared for Ellie in let's face it a bad decaying world and left Joel no choice in saving her if the fireflies weren't a bunch of **** to Joel in the first game this wouldn't of happen. Joel did what needed to be done. On the other hand, Abby killing Joel was it truly down to the death of her dad or was it that Joel took the cure from everyone leading to the fireflies been killed throughout the story because they hyped up that they would be a possible cure meaning Ellie and Joel stopping that making everyone think that the fireflies were lying but technically they weren't and dying for it would scare any folk including Abby that's why I think in my opinion its split down the middle did Joel deserve to die come from a mentality opinion, yeah kind of he did piss a lot of people off and unfortunately it caught up to him and he died but did he deserve what happened to him in that basement no not at all Abby's dads death was quick but Joels wasn't it was long and painful with the shotgun to the knee and golf club. Joel and Tommy saved Abby from the infected if it wasn't for them she would have been dead it was in that estate it was life or death rule one of surviving don't tell random people your names its a sign of weakness and Abby clicked on straight away it's him he killed him therefore, she did what had to be done. I had mixed emotions about this game from Anger from the plot of the game to happy when you get to see Joel and Ellie have some time together with the museum being one of the coolest parts of all the flashbacks being and true fan of dinosaurs and space at a young age. The fact you're constantly switched between both Ellie and Abby in the game was night and day especially the one after one in the theatre scenes myself and surly millions of more was like huh? I get it ND was making Abby lost like Ellie at the end that's why I think at the end of all this everyone loses. Ellie lost Joel and others along the Journey sparking her rage and Abby the same way Losing her Dad most likely her Firefly friends that most likely died due to the while cure to her WLF friends that Ellie and Tommy killed to her and Lev getting captured. In this games time nobody wins and it's cruel and unforgiving but that's how it is survival of the fittest and all. Did I enjoy it, in the end, yes and no the emotional sides yes ill admit it some stuff in this game hit me hard but how the story turns out just really didn't cut it just because I've seen way too many revenge plots in games and they all lead down a similar world how the hell is ND going to end up finishing this story I have no idea. Technical 5/5: nothing to say here, simply a technical masterpiece
Story 0/5 inconsistent narrative with poor choices, LOU II is the perfect example of how important story is for game, even with jaw dropping visuals. The reviews that compare the story to the last season of game of thrones and the latest star wars trilogy are totally correct, very inconsistent plot i rather convenient twists that betray the original nature of characters, new characters are not likable at all, and you really don't care for what happens to them. The deuteragonist concept is a really interesting one but to pull it off effectively you need way more than what was invested on abby who is just evil. Finally, the revenge is bad theme is extremely cliche, there are portions of the game where it seems over extended, forcefully running on an on around the same saturated premise. Gameplay 3/5: jumping and open levels add depth but gunplay is still blunt and abby's character punching zombies to death is a premise very well fitting for zombieland or shaun of the dead. Having to play as Abby (the director's beloved abomination) is uncalled for and in contrast to ellie and joel they seem to force you to like her through any means possible, this creates a portion of the game i didn't enjoy at all. i would like to state that i consider TLOU as one of the best video games ever made (if not the best). It is thia what brought me to play the game even after the leak scandal and the despicable attitude of an egocentric director towards those he supposedly works for.

This game has a ton of controversy surrounding it so knowing that I will simply do my very best to give the most honest opinion possible. NOTE FOR SPOILERS AHEAD. This game is first of all, NOTHING like its predecessor. And that is both a great thing and a terrible thing. In fact, upon my first playthrough of this game I had so many mixed feelings that even now I still need to process it all. I can definitely say however that I have zero problems regarding the actual gameplay. The visuals and animations, the design and graphics and combat and traversal, its all something amazing. Nothing groudbreaking but definitlely a worthy and noteable upgrade from the original. My mixed feelings derive from the story. That is what The Last Of Us is truly known for. The theme of revenge and violence begets violence is nothing new in modern media but it is still engrossing nonetheless. But the character direction, motives, and bleakness of the world and story makes it hard for me to consider this game as fun. It is intense and in all honesty, I found myself vastly disagreeing with the stories directions at points. Especially considering that you have to play almost half the game as the essential antagonist of the story. I still am trying to understand what would make Naughty Dog feel that this was a good idea. I understand that the point was to humanize Abby but (with purpose of keeping the story vague) after what she does to multiple beloved characters, there is simply no way I can root for her. Ellie however is completely different from the girl we protected back in 2013. Much has changed. The story has many beats and many points which are reasonably divisive over the community and a subject for debate for years to come and the ending left me with a feeling of emptiness that I once again cannot be sure is a good feeling or horrible. This game is unique in execution though heavily flawed in ways that regard the narration. Still, it is a technical marvel and a story which must be decided on a personal basis without any peer pressure or community bias. I enjoyed the game and despite my issues, I do appreciate how I wrestle around on my standpoint towards the plot and my standpoint as a fan in general. Play it first then decide but overall, for me this game is definitely worth a shot. Although I do enjoy the original game more, Part 2 is surely a journey to be had.
Overall Visuals and tech-10/10 Animations and sound-10/10 Gameplay and combat-9/10 Story(For my personal experience based on my first playthrough of 24 Hours total)-6/10. It has incredible moments but there are certain things that I find hard to justify considering the magic of TLOU 1 and the 7 years ND has had to set an alternative work in motion. Still, the ambition behind it all is something that should be given recognition. In the end, you be your own judge.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who beat the game I can say the gameplay and graphics are top tier. I would say the first half of the game is good even if you don't like what happens to Joel. But man once you get put in Abby's perspective it just gets so bad. Since it goes to her perspective on a cliffhanger on Ellie's POV all I wanted was to go back to Ellie, but the game makes you keep playing Abby and keep doing it for hours and hours. Sure you understand her character and the fact that shes not a terrible person, but in the end I still didn't care about her. The entire time playing as her, I just wanted it to end and see her friends suffer, quite a bit. The theme of the story was evident and the way the story would unfold was extremely predictable with absolutely no payoff. By 75% through Abby's POV i was so desensitized from all the violence and all the shock value Naughty dog put into the game and I could not find how the story could possibly salvage itself in the end, and it didn't.

The ending makes sense at face value but if you think about all the actions it really doesn't add up. Ellie basically decides to spare Abby's life after all the murder she's done because "Joel would want Ellie to be able to forgive." Nevermind the fact that you literally killed hundreds of humans that could easily have a similar backstory, you can't kill Abby who you much more reason to kill because.... I have no clue why. I guess you gotta end the cycle of violence that's extremely evident in the story. Still in a zombie apocalyptic world where violence is necessary and everyone does it without a drop of a hat though. But I guess in the end Ellie learned her lesson and will never kill again, because killing is bad! Can't wait to see The Last of Us Part III where everything is flowers and roses since Ellie stops killing from this point onwards since she learned her lesson right? No more killing for the rest of her life because that would start the whole cycle again. If you think about both POV you could say both characters learn or should learn a lesson, and both contradict each other. On Abby's side it would really just be don't spare anyone and tie your loose ends. Hell, if Abby just killed Ellie and Tommy along with Joel none of her friends would have died. And on Ellie's side it would be to know when to give it up and be thankful with what you have, that way she'd at least have Dina and the kid with her. So I guess the real lesson is, when you do commit violence make sure to kill all the witnesses, and if you are the victim then its best to just forgive the villain and make do with the rest of your life.

Honestly this game just felt like a huge middle finger from the devs to the fans. The only people I can see enjoy this game are those that get off of pain and torture and losing everything dear to you. So yeah get this game if you like that, otherwise save your money.

Naughty Dog knew very well how much we were tied to the first chapter and the characters. here we find an extremely meaningless story, complicated with extremely questionable narrative choices that could have been better chosen in 7 YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT. what does the game want to demonstrate? what's the point? what leaves us finishing the game? It is very damaging that naughty dog proceeded to mislead its fans on what to expect from the game. No doubt the game has fantastic graphics and visuals. However, even though gameplay and some mechanics have vastly improved from the previous titles, there is that sense that a lot of things in the game can get repetitive very fast, especially stealth kills. It is also very obvious that gameplay mechanics from trailers were very highly exaggerated and scripted. What truly puts salt on the wounds is how disappointing the game can be to a player or fan almost solely due to the story. The game could have exceeded expectations and be something for the history books but due to a long wait and high hype and the way the story has unfolded, it has no doubt been a big cause of the game's failure of achieving that high statues that it was aiming for. It can be said that it is obvious that many of the so-called professional critic's reviews are very suspicious of being a shill. I do not wish to say that game is bad, because it's not really. Instead, that anger and disappointment from me and many fans of the series are directed on naughty dog's decision to be part of today's woke theme and its choice on what path the story took. This will certainly go down as a disappointment and tragedy in the gaming community. Expand

But, because this portion is in there, it breaks the protagonist/antagonist rules and kills the immersion of the story, leaves it confusing and absolutely breaks pacing of the game. Play the original Last of Us if you haven't, that game is a masterpiece. Now if you're a fan of the original game, this is a 1 because of that 10 hour portion. It'll leave you feeling sad, angry, disappointed, and betrayed by ND. The ending is completely cliche unlike the first game. I believe this is still worth a play for the first game fans, but watch the Twitch streams and wait till the game goes down to $30/$20. You'll be pissed if you paid $60 if you're a fan of the original. Expand

the story is somewhat empty and you get to feel empty argumentatively, instrumentally and graphically it's fantastic, being the most sincere thing you can do is good, but not as much as expected and they sold

Dont listen to the haters. The Last of Us series has amazing writing, impeccable attention to detail in the environment, and amazing casting for characters. I cant wait to play the game in its entirety!

People give the bad ratings because they see their favorite character die and you play as that character who killed that character which is a real bummer. Expand

Technical masterpiece but bad story elements. I spent 80$ on this game for a great experience but all i got was disappointment. Bad character development insulting attitude from Neil and the actors blaming bots for poor reviews. The game is average at best. Too bad what a waste.

Expand

As someone who is normally a fan of Naughty Dog games and of the original Last of Us, I feel this game is a slap in the face. If you enjoyed the first game because of the story, characters and relationships, this game is not for you. Due to some questionable story-line choices, the game feels like a slog to get through and tries to force its players into a middle school ethics class rather than engross us in an enthralling story. The graphics are some of the best this generation, but the game-play rarely features anything innovative and feels like more of the same as the first game. Overall, averaging everything out I would give this game a 5/10 and similar to Game of Thrones season 8 and Star Wars - Rise of Skywalker, this is one sequel that will sorely disappoint even its most loyal fans.

    Graphics - 10/10
    Gameplay - 6/10
    Story - 1/10

But if you're going to kill a character that literally everyone cares about and loves. send him off in a good way. But nope , his death is rather a waste and nothing comes out of it , and its just a way of showing you how they really wanted to **** on the character. not only that , but the way he's treated by Ellie in the game is just sad. I've never hated a game so much as much as this one , i feel like it was just made to piss you off. overall all i gotta say is play it if you never played the first and don't care about the story. But if you were a huge fan of the first one and expected a great sequel. then stay the **** away from this one. 5/10. **** this game. Expand

So this game in no way deserves a 10 but in no way is this game a 0 or 1. The environments, voice, character models, gun sounds are some of the best I've ever seen in any game. Like I enjoyed everything else in this game except for the story and it got a 6/10 from me cause that's how much druckman fked up the story for me!! Honestly I feel sorry for all the devs who put in so much work into making this amazing looking game just to have neil drunkman **** it up for the whole team. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
