The Last Of Us Part II, a perfect example of good intentions with horrible execution. Its basically what you get if you were to take Halo 2's core plot line and shove it in a modern post apocalyptic situation. With Ellie effectively the arbiter. And Abby is the Master Chief.

And Joel is the lazy half baked character assassination of halo 3's death of srg. johnson. With that analogy

And Joel is the lazy half baked character assassination of halo 3's death of srg. johnson.

With that analogy lets get into the actual technical stuff of this review. Is TLOU2 good NO, is it bad? NO. Would I suggest buying this game HECK NO. The game is a buggy inconsistent mess. I found roughly 3000 bugs. That as a QA tester myself I'd consider show stoppers.

Ive had enemies fall through the floor, dogs spawn from no where and many other bugs including escaping the boundaries of the map to cut what otherwise would be 28 hrs of gaming to around 7.

The only saving grace of this game is that its graphical fidelity is decent. As in take god of war at about 3k and drop it down to 1080p good. IS IT WORTH 60 USD? NO. is it worth 30 or 20? Nah still too much. I'd give it about a 15 dollar value.

TLOU2 is no masterpiece its what every other game has done and barely holds on. These 10/10 bot reviews are as bad as the 0/10 the combat is clunky and feels like a old gears of war game the plot feels like chumming for sharks. And the overall plot is about as solid as watching another half baked redone "taken" movie.

Would I say don't play this game nah, is it so bad you should avoid no. Would I say to play this game also no. For me its a 6 outta 10 cause the blatant laziness. its also very DEPRESSING. I'm using gaming analogies to avoid spoilers. But its for me just above average. If you want to play a game play something else. And I pray don't make the mistake of sinking 2 days into this game. Just wait for it to reach the like 10$ price range.

I didn't recognise the characters. Joel was a essentially a paternalised (new word) NPC and Ellie was an angry adult devoid of her usual wit and vulnerability.

So while I have no regrets buying it, at the end of game, I felt almost no emotions. No goosebumps. The game ended. I felt depressed and sad it didn't live up to anything I hoped.

The lack of multiplayer and trophy challenge of harder difficulties means I won't be playing it agin for a very long time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I, like many am very disappointed with the sequel to my favorite game on the PS3. The story is not great, and while I get what the developers were trying to do, it does not resonate with me. Naughty Dog spent the entire previous game building Joel and Ellie into the characters that I know and love and successfully created that connection. Abby killing Joel 2 hours into the game was a shocking moment for me, as I had managed to avoid all spoilers leading into this. This is not my problem, it upset me but I kept my mind open that this would be the spark for a new impactful story. My problem is trying to shove a character down my throat after immediately making me hate her. Naughty Dog simply did not do a good enough job of making me like Abby, and being forced to play half the game as her is frustrating and ruined the experience for me. I simply wanted to rush through her chapters to get back to playing as Ellie, and that doesn't happen until near the end of the game. For this main reason, I cannot say I enjoyed my time playing this game. The story never has any pay off, and gives no real satisfaction when the credits roll. That being said, for me this is one of the best looking games I've played on this console. Cutscenes and game play look nearly identical, and the environments are gorgeous and well fleshed out. The combat and game play is excellent, and there are key differences between playing as Ellie and Abby that make each character a unique experience despite the shared mechanics. This game could have been the best game on this console, but the story severely hampers any chance of that. For Last of Us fans, still worth a play through to experience the story. I'm glad I played it, but I know I will never pick this up to play it again. Expand

Stop this **** please. Stop lying. I am 25 years old straight boy like most of players. And I don’t interested in all this trendy tolerant stuff, like lesbians, weed and interracial family with Chinese kids. I don’t have any Prejudiced attitude mean thoughts about that, But it is very weak theme, topic or whatever it is trying to pretend, for 30 hours of really nice gameplay, But Without a well-thought-out, not far-fetched plot, with a frankly indifferent attitude to characters whose actions contradict, with the beliefs, characters and motivations described earlier, told at the highest level in the first part of TLOU.

It is not a continue of a great story. It is not TLOU2. Gameplay 910 and 0/10 for other sides.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. here's my opinion on why I think The Last of Us Part 2 is a magnificent game, but bitter. I don't think it is necessary to talk about how exquisite the technical question of the game is, so I will skip this part. In terms of history: yes, I found the story very well written and brings you a very strong moral reflection at the end. The Last of Us Part 2 is a game about revenge, but most of all, it's a game about, I believe, maturing and being able to "move on". I agree that the only ball out of the story was Joel's lack of character in accepting to follow Abby, in addition to the cowardly death he had; but we cannot deny that something like this is, unfortunately, plausible in a post-apocalyptic world like that of TLOU. Looking at it more coldly, I think Ellie's journey was just like Abby's journey, the only difference being that Abby and her group measured casualties (killed less) compared to Ellie (note that I'm not "wiping" for the cowardly way they lured Tommy and Joel there and the torture they subjected Joel to). Ellie was frustrated to lose her father in such a brutal and traumatic way, she saw everything without being able to do anything, helpless; and this is enhanced by the fact that she is fighting with Joel over the "bidding" with the fireflies, and she loses him so suddenly without being able to say goodbye it was heartbreaking. I must also point out that Ellie's development (or deterioration of her humanity) is simply magnificent! The pre-torture scene of Nora, the failed attempt to get information from Mel and Owie (I don't remember his name, mb) and shortly after discovering that he killed an innocent life as a result (the fetus); all of which shows how misrepresented Ellie's psychological was, how empty the feeling of revenge is. Jumping straight to that controversial ending for many, I found it bitter, too bitter. I cried horribly with the flashbacks and the final sequence of Ellie's fight with Abby, it was all very hard. The fact that Ellie didn’t kill Abby shows that she matured, because, just as Abby did to her by killing Joel, Joel also took someone very important to her (besides Ellie had taken her two friends and Tommy plus another, and yet he forgave him). Ellie saw that it wasn't worth it, she didn't forgive it, I believe, but she saw that it wouldn't bring Joel back, it wouldn't bring his glory days he had years ago, it wouldn't bring him his innocence anymore. In short, this is why I find the story and the outcome of it exceptional

Joel is not a hero, nor is he a villain, he is a guy who does what it takes to survive. It's been years in this apocalypse, even the best of people, in this same situation, would have to take actions that were previously unthinkable or die quickly. As for the fact that the woman is strong and cuddly, it is more than expected that it is, after all, it is a **** apocalypse that has lasted for years. In this situation, both brute force and intelligence are essential to keep you alive. Thus, the surviving mass would be people prepared to fight and kill. People with low physical fitness and who were slow to realize that it is killing or dying would be the first to be victimized. These types of people only survive on television series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yes, I played the game. I was the first of my friends to beat it.

Nothing the game was trying to do with its story went over our heads. The early death of Joel was meant to give the player a sense of loss similar to what Joel experienced in the beginning of the first game. The dual narratives were meant to challenge the player’s attachment to hero figures. (Although they had to heavily retcon the doctor in the first game to make Abby sympathetic.) Abby and Lev are parallel to Joel and Ellie. Abby and Owen sympathizing with an opposing faction is parallel to the player sympathizing with Abby. The game makes us fight Abby at her weakest and most harmless to challenge our concept of revenge. Ellie ends up living out her greatest fear of being alone as a punishment for seeking revenge.

Seriously, we get it. It’s really not that deep, and it's silly to pretend that it is so you can conveniently accuse disappointed fans of not "understanding" it. If the writing in this game is so brilliant, why was retconning even necessary? Why was the doctor suddenly a noble hero in a squeaky clean surgery room and why did they canonize the specific player choice of Joel stabbing him in the neck when many players, including myself, shot him in the leg? This was a clear attempt to make Joel err more on the side of evil to get the player to sympathize with Abby. The ending of the game went from a fascinating moral ambiguity to "Joel definitely bad" because the writers, who are supposedly too sophisticated for us to comprehend, couldn't think of any other way to make Abby sympathetic. In addition to disregarding what made the TLOU's ending interesting, TLOU2 reduces Ellie's immunity from a major plot point to a simple character trait, and throws away Joel and Ellie's relationship, which was what gave the first game its appeal to begin with. Joel's death and the absence of his dynamic with Ellie creates a void that the game then tries to fill with characters we have no reason to care about, and this emptiness made me feel as though I was playing strictly for game completion.

What's sad is that the first game already left a perfect foundation for a sequel. The rising tensions between Joel and Ellie and the hanging question of what to do about Ellie’s immunity would have made a far more compelling story and climax. There would have been just as much potential for plot twists and subverting expectations as Part 2's story. Instead, these things were reduced to brief flashbacks in favor of a forced, retcon-fueled revenge tale does the bare minimum to connect itself to the TLOU universe. But apparently I’m an entitled gamer for expecting a sequel to be a sequel and not a complete tangent.

The game is a strong 6 for me at best. Graphics, animations, gameplay, and level design are well done. I could understand people giving it a 7 or an 8. Hell, I can even understand going higher if it was rewritten as a new IP with new characters. But there is no way in absolute hell that this game is a 10/10 AS A SEQUEL by any standard.

The game was all about joel and ellie interaction and we get joel killed at the beginning, which could happen in an apocalypse and after all the enemies he managed to get. But making us half the game play as a character which is hated by the vast majority of players who played tlou part 1, is just nonsense. There were a lot of decisions that could have been much better, this is a game that makes you feel out of character and like you don't even care anymore about what is going to happen in many parts of the game, and that, in a game that got most of its praise because of its amazing story, makes me think that this game was poorly written and badly executed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What makes a game truly good is if you enjoyed it thoroughly. A good game should be equal parts amazing gameplay and amazing story. Naughty Dog has knocked it out the park again with the Last of Us Part 2 with amazing, fun, and addictive gameplay. But where it fails with its over-ambitious story. It's far too long. Worse yet it runs roughshod over the protagonists of the original game. Joel is retconned as a selfish murderer and Ellie becomes a vengeful vixen. Neil Druckman and his fellow writer Halley Gross brings us an extremely conflicted girl power-driven, social justice laden, white men are bad, white women are great, lesbians are even better game. While I love complicated games and protagonists who are woefully human, hate sequels that do not honor the stakes of what came before. Joel's decision to save Ellie at the end of the original games was not because Joel was a heartless villain, it was because he came to love Ellie as a daughter. His saving Ellie was a sacrifice on his part, not a selfish act. He knew there would be no coming back from what he did, yet he did it anyway to save his daughter. Yet in this game we are presented with the wrongheaded belief what Joel did to save Ellie was wrong, not only wrong but that he deserved a brutal, ignoble, and painful death at the hands a superior ALPHA Women. During her quest for revenge Ellie becomes the villain and Abby is painted as the hero. A bold choice, yes, but amazingly wrongheaded. It's like making a movie from the daughter of a Nazi point of view as she seeks justice for her father who was executed rightfully by Jewish vigilantes for his war crimes. "Child murder" is never okay even if the action of murdering a child has the potential to save billions of lives. Sometimes a sequel should never be made. This was one of those times. Expand

I thought it was a perfect catalyst to offset the story and gave the right motivation for Ellie and company.

The juxtaposition to Abby's story was stark contrast and perfect parallel to Ellie's descent into madness. I just wasn't too impressed with some of the decisions made in the story, and some of the character moments and dialogue were weak in comparison to the original.

Standing on its own, segments and dialogue between characters weren't as exciting and wasn't as engaging, I didn't have too much attachment to Jesse or Dina throughout the story. The new side characters introduced in Abby's section of the game were interesting and a breath of fresh air, but didn't have enough screen time to develop before certain story events happen.

And I get the praise for graphics, but inevitably graphics are only going to improve and look better in the next few years, so I don't tend to get overly excited over graphics. But it is a pretty game.

The gameplay is fun, but nothing crazy innovative. The map layout for each encounter keeps combat engaging and exciting at times, and the hide-and-seek type of combat is fun. As well, I do like the section of the game where it straight-up turns into resident evil.

Overall, I respect the themes and concepts that Neil and the team at Naughty Dog worked to achieve, but I do have to knock it down a bit for its execution. The gameplay and graphics are what makes this game worth playing, but delving into a story-driven drama where the story is the weakest part of the affair does dampen the experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The Last of Us vuelve luego de un final cerrado.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is a saying. “When you’re lost in the darkness, look for the light”. In the first game, there was a light to find. The main point of the story was still an ‘A to B’ story, but done extremely well. The gameplay was serviceable, at best, and enemies were extremely dumb. Where the mastery in the first game lied was it’s story.
Joel was such a likable protagonist that you were able to get behind anything he did, even his actions at the end, which were ultimately selfish. Ellie was a likable side character that helped Joel open up to people, especially her. She became a surrogate daughter to him, after he lost his own daughter 20 years ago. The game ended on a lie, and Joel did it to keep Ellie safe.

Fast forward 5 or so years, and things have changed. Ellie’s relationship with Joel is strained, and they barely talk to one another anymore. This makes Joel’s immediate death about an hour or so into the game so goddamn stupid. It’s not even that he died, but the way he died is not only disrespectful but incredibly idiotic. The build up to his death is so poorly written that you could watch a porn cartoon and have better written dialogue than this. An hour or two into the game, he dies. Whatever. He was dead weight. Fast forward a little bit, and Ellie is an emo. She doesn’t seem to want to talk to anybody, clearly affected by Joel’s death (even though their relationship was strained at the time, so she shouldn’t care as much.) I only ever found this to be a minor inconvenience, as they can do whatever the hell they want.
I would go over the bulk of the story and discuss the pacing issues and mission placement, but we would be here forever. I’ll give you the basics on what they should’ve done better.
-keep Abby’s 10 hour story, but mix it in with Ellie’s so that they both build up to the fight at the cinema. This would probably keep the players investment in the game, wanting to play as Ellie but not as Abby but having to progress through both at the same time. This solves the mission placement issue.
-(they should’ve) removed a lot of stupid content they shouldn’t have added, keeping the playtime low, solving the pacing issue.
-have the ending just be Abby and Ellie trying to fight in the water, as the other, but have both kill each other. This is just an ending that I’d find entertaining, at least Ellie and Abby would be equal in terms of loss.
Honestly, I feel like this game, despite it’s problems, is worth playing just once. It’s nice to have a game that takes risks, rather than playing it safe. Although, the marketing certainly doesn’t give the company much praise, especially because it shows they aren’t proud enough of the project they made to advertise what they actually made, and instead advertised the game people actually wanted to play, which just makes them look bad. That means all they want is money, not to tell a story that nobody wanted but still can be enjoyed, but instead hiding a well told story behind what could’ve been a masterpiece that not only took risks but advertised it as such. Overall... is this a good GAME? Yes. You’re a moron if you think this game is just a failure in every regard, because it isn’t. It gets a lot of things right. But to those giving this game “PERFECT 10/10” are also just a part of the problem. This game in no way is a masterpiece, and never will be. It had glaring pacing problems and story issues that will bug people who bother to look for them. But, the gameplay almost makes up for it and the story is so daring that some people can just avoid all that and enjoy it for what it tried to be. This is a good game. Good story? It’s a subjective question, but I believe yes, if it was an original game. Is it a good TLoU2? Hell no. This story shouldn’t have ever been told in this universe, because it doesn’t belong. But I think that some things can help me look past all that, as the graphics are stunning and the gameplay is smooth and functional.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us is my favorite game ever with TLoZ: BoTW. The original TLoU is a masterpiece, and I'm really sad to see how Naughty Dog has ruined it. I'm not gonna review this game because it's already done for many people. I just come to say that this is not the game that they have been selling us during years. It's like if in the new God of War, someone kills Kratos and then Santa Monica forces us to play with his killer.
TLoU Part II is an offense to all the fans of the first game. They forced us to empathize with someone we don't care about. They have been selling us the trip of Ellie, Ellie in the cover, all the trailers about Ellie, EVERYTHING about Ellie, and at the moment of truth, they force us to play with Joel's killer, and, the worst of everything, after some hellish hours that we all play obliged, they forced us to destroy Ellie, to try to kill her, playing with Abbie. It's the cruelest and most disgusting way I've ever seen to laugh in the face of the fans. I'm sorry ND, but you have broken the masterpiece you did 7 years ago.

    Graphics - Unbelievable
Story - Very disjointed and sometimes downright confusing.
Characters - New characters are very very dull bar a select few. Old characters are nowhere near as attachable as the first game. Bond between Joel and Ellie has been completely ruined and the very end makes little to no sense as it goes against everything Ellie did the whole way through the game. If there is a part 3, story telling will have to be front and centre as it simply wasn't up to scratch this time around.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. if they rearrange some parts and fix others... it could be a masterpiece.. like change the parts of Abby to the start of the game, TO TRY, AT LEAST TRY, to get people to feel sympathetic to her... put more chemistry between Diana and Ellie, about the teenage stuff of weed... was a little CRINGEY but okay? I feel like this game was way too mainstream and that's why is soo divided, they wanted to put stuff that some people didn't like... and put stuff that other people like. The people giving negative reviews actually liked some parts of the game (like the parts with Joel)... but not the complete game, that's why you have to be open minded to play this game, this game isn't made for old fans... or even new fans... it's trying to be in the middle... and you can tell that in a lot of parts in the game.

Abby and Ellie makes a lot of bad choices.. and you the player feel that.. but you can't control any of it. It's like you are watching your character do bad actions and you command them to do those actions... without even a choice, uninstall the game or play it. The game make you feel miserable because of that, you are punished because of an action you didn't even had a choice of, makes you kill a dog, and play with the same dog with Abby. Yeah!! make the player control someone that they hate to fight the character they love... awesome!

How I'm supposed to feel sympathetic to Abby? because of a thing that happened in the first minutes of the game, everything you throw at me won't work... she is not a bad character, but I mean.. the game forces you to hate her and forces you to try.... un-hate her?

Abby just don't even try to understand why Ellie is so triggered and doesn't fell bad that she killed Joel... the character that we loved and liked died with a slow and cruel death, because Joel deserved, because he killed her father?
(her father accepted to kill the child of someone to save the world, but disregarded to accept to kill his own child to save the world)

The sex scene... really?????? at this point I just felt that this game is trying so much... SO MUCH to say I'M DIFFERENT! LOOK AT ME PLEASE!!!

The game is trying to say that revenge is bad, but it just doesn't make sense Ellie do revenge in the first point, and they try to justify that making her change... in the last second? why didn't she stayed with Diana in the first place? actually why didn't you just stayed put Ellie? because of the plot, if Ellie didn't wanted revenge then this game would not exist.... JOEL DIDN'T WANTED YOU TO DO THAT ELLIE! and i knew that from the start.. now you can't play guitar, the thing that connected you with him.. and saved the person that caused all that. Abby would die naturally... what was the point Ellie? seriously? what you are trying to prove?

This is not The Last of Us, it just doesn't fit in a single bit... this is a completely different game, with completely different characters, and completely different meaning. With that in mind you will for sure.. love this game and give it a 10/10 rating.

But if you think this is The Last of Us 2, only disappointment will come to you.

Killing Joel and instantly destroying the connection the people had with him. And that s*x scene, at least give her fkn b**bs man, I gagged at that scene and with the music, it made it even more horrifying. I just wanted to play as Joel or even Ellie and them meeting different characters, factions, groups, govts or anything and surviving different situations and dangers. Opening up this post-apocalyptic world to us more than ever you know, kinda more like the walking dead game but better. Take me on an adventure and not some cliched revenge story eww. Fkn milk the game, maybe kill Joel in the third game due to him being bitten or something and us continuing to play as the ever-maturing Ellie. Something on those lines and I'll still buy the game man. But don't get stupid sub-plots and NPCs and suddenly making it/them relevant to the main story. As a narrative-driven game, your USP has to be an enthralling story which unfortunately was the worst aspect of the game. I'll still congratulate naughty dog for making a bold move with the story and honestly, they should've known it was gonna be a hit or miss and unfortunately it was the latter. Really had something going on for you, but I guess mistress Anita had to be satisfied. Kudos to the person who leaked the story-line, you saved money for a lot of other people who just might take a pass for this one and instead buy cyberpunk. This game lacks proper structure, and the character development is close to nonexistent. Graphics are clearly the focus, as the gameplay has not evolved a single bit since the first Game. The game itself, however, is not as bad as the “Anti-SJW” crowd says it is. Game is decent, as the plot, graphics are on an acceptable level. However, the themes come off as pretentious. Expand

Do not get me wrong, the story has it's moments and I love the flashbacks fro Joel and Ellie. But what the f*** was I playing as Abby for HALF OF THE GAME? The Last Of Us is The Last Of Us because of Joel and Ellie. I was playing as Joel's killer for most of the game. Is ND trying to make me feel bad for Abby? Like tf? SHE KILLED JOEL. The story could have been so much different. But I do like the moments in the story.

As for gameplay, the game is flawless in terms of detail, gameplay, sound, and graphics. As for the story, they could have changed the story to a way better one for sure.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved TLOU 1. I bought this game the day it came out and avoided all spoilers and leaks beforehand.
Honesly, I did not like this game at all.
The story is literally pointless and absolutely depressing. Joel's death was poorly written. Joel survived so much hell in the first game. He was impaled and survived. He spent months being bed ridden. He fought so many bandits, fireflies, and infected and overcame all of it. All that feels so pointless if he just dies so easily two hours into the sequel. His fight for survival in the first game is cheapened since we see him die so easily after waltzing into the hand of the enemy.

Abby is mean and unpleasant. She has sex with Owen and acts like she doesn't care the next day even though he was in a relationship with a pregnant woman. I get they try to make us empathize with her. But honestly anyone with half a brain can understand why she did what she did. Joel killed her dad and dismantled the fireflies. We get it. We don’t have to play as her for half the game to understand that. Especially if she’s gonna be so coarse and bland the whole time. Abby has no chemistry with her friends (except Manny). She treats Owen like crap, she disrespects Mel's relationship, and once Manny is shot in the face she doesn't take even half a second to mention him or show some grief. Playing as her did not make me feel any worse for killing them.

Her arc of helping Yara is pointless because Yara dies an hour after you go through all that freaking trouble to cut her infected arm off. I did not want to play as Abby for half the game. I did not want to fight Ellie as Abby. I tried making Ellie kill me to see if that was an option but it was not. Playing as Abby was so draining and it made the pacing bad. I thought this game was Ellie's story! I did not sign up to play as a character with no personality who's story amounts to nothing. The whole California part is even more pointless. If Ellie did not go, Abby would have died at the Rattler base and Ellie would have kept her family and fingers. Her trip there makes no sense and is very stupid. And to make matters worse, they make you play guitar with missing fingers and it is literally so disturbing. Almost as disturbing as Abby's awful sex scene.

Also, I did not appreciate how Ellie and Dina have sex the day after their first freaking kiss. Who does that? Ellie is so madly in love with her but we don't have any reason to like her that much.
Jesse was the only character I liked aside from Joel and he is shot in the face out of nowhere and never spoken about again outside of some dumb collectible note. They just had to get rid of him so he could be out of the picture once the baby was born. He ends up just being a sperm donor. Which sucks because he was so nice to Ellie and was not bitter about her moving on with Dina.

I am trying to be fair by giving it a 5 because everything was good aside from the story. But the story is the most important thing in a game like this. By the end of the game I felt utterly unfulfilled. I didn't even like Ellie anymore. I wish it TLOU 2 did not exist and that we stopped after the first installment. So many people die in this game and it all amounts to nothing. This story amounts to nothing. Joel dies, Jesse dies, Tommy is divorced and crippled, Ellie is alone and missing fingers, and for what? What was the point of this? Honestly this is a demented, twisted, slaughter fest of a game and it really did not tell a compelling enough story to warrant being so dark.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us 2 is a visually stunning and exciting game that could have been a straight 10/10 if not for the writers sacrificing a solid plot for the sake of a forced LGBT narrative. And I think this is quite poorly integrated and so detracts from the flow that was created in the first game. My annoyance at story elements in the game was such that I was inclined to want to score it 0, but while Joel is disappointingly killed early on, his and Ellie’s story is continued through flashbacks which are poignant. If they wanted to create an LGBT narrative it may have worked well in a subsequent title, but largely throwing the Joel and Ellie narrative in the bin in favour of new characters who we are set up to despise from the outset was a poor creative choice by Naughty Dog. It’s comparable to killing Daniel Larusso or Rocky off in the sequels to their classic movies and expecting us to enjoy watching the rest when it’s about characters that killed our heroes - it would make no sense and would kill all hope and desire for subsequent instalments.

In terms of scoring this, I gave 5/5 for the graphics, game mechanics, and level design. For the story I give it 2/5 since it’s like a heavily diluted version of that which I eagerly anticipated and expected. Still, the devs made an extraordinary amount of money from this game and so perhaps they don’t mind having thrown their credibility in the toilet. I will not be watching the upcoming series nor playing any more games from this company.

Oh well. The first game was great.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall it was an enjoyable experience playing that left me with a mixture of emotions all at once: frustration, sadness, determination and fear.

In regards to the improvements, I found the gameplay to be improved somewhat, adding in new mechanics (e.g. dodge during melee, going prone to hide/access certain areas) alongside with a few tweaks that made the combat segments more intense/enjoyable than the first instalment (e.g. easier to stealth kill, many options to approach enemies which caters to various play styles).

The visuals/audio I considered to be a vast improvement, every emotion evoked by each character felt authentic. The gruesome attention to detail from bashing someone's face in with a pipe or blood gushing out of a slit throat from your blade really aided in setting the gritty, morbid tone The Last Of Us is known for, however it is most certainly 'amped up' within Part II. Each voice actor/actress performed their roles very well-done, and I was genuinely surprised by the appearance of Laura Bailey and Jeffrey Wright.

Discussing the new characters, I honestly thought was not lacking, but they could've been improved slightly. The death of Joel had now forced me to start feeling for the new characters, Dina and Jesse. Unfortunately, they just didn't strike me as much as I'd hoped. I found as if they weren't given enough time for their personalities/backgrounds to breathe long enough. For example, the idea I had gotten from Jesse's character was that he had an Asian background, he was once in a relationship with Dina and at some point had gotten her pregnant. That was it. That's not to say I necessarily hated these characters, they were just mediocre at best. The dynamic relationship between Joel and Ellie on their journey through the states was a crucial element in Part I that made it so great. They are one of the most memorable and loveable video game duos of my generation. For Naughty Dog to kill him off was a bold move on their part and I could see why. They wanted to build more on the world of The Last Of Us.

Along with Dina and Jesse, Part II introduced the new protagonist Abby and her crew. Personally I couldn't stand Abby's character not only because of her intentions to murder Joel, but also I thought her personality was actually pretty cold and selfish. Despite all that, she was actually one of the more fleshed out characters of the entire game. Her motivations and actions throughout Part II could be argued as justifiable in some cases. I still disliked her however. The other members (Owen, Mel, Manny, etc.) again all were too similar to Dina and Jesse, just slightly mediocre characters with somewhat fleshed out backgrounds but it just wasn't enough to feel invested in them. The two characters that took me by surprise but was Yara and Lev who I thought were the most charming and likeable new characters. I was genuinely motivated to aid this ragtag brother-sister duo along with their issues.

Addressing the general plot... To be honest, at first I wasn't sure what I was getting into. I hadn't seen many of the trailers/gameplay reveals released prior so basically I delved in with no set expectations. Halfway through however, I thought so far the story was a complete mess. Everything that happened as it strung me along felt all over the place. Ellie's endeavours in Seattle was more concise and easy to follow where as Abby's adventures with Yara and Lev was convoluted and unpredictable. However after finishing the campaign and looking back on it, I grew to somewhat appreciate the muddy tone of the story. As much as a mess it was, it made me want to progress more because I was so on edge as to what was gonna happen until the end of the game. Despite the flawed storyline, Last Of Us Part II is still a riveting take on how the world would cope in an apocalyptic setting.

I will add this in, seeing the advertising after finishing the game TWICE now was most certainly misleading in the sense that Joel was depicted as a more major character in the story, taking Jesse's spot at certain points during the trailers. Yes, video game trailers are edited often to prevent giving away crucial plot elements but in Naughty Dog's case it was such a noticeable difference and for fans to feel betrayed in such a way I do not blame them.

One thing I was always expecting was Joel's death, however, I never imagined it to be quite on the humiliating scale it was. However, killing the main character, especially like this, does not make a story bad. The vendetta and journey Ellie goes through makes you seriously question whether this is all worth it and whether Abby deserves it. At first, I was livid for making us play as Abby, however, when you see everything from her perspective you really start to wonder if you actually want her dead. This game really made me ask myself the hard questions and really try to think about Ellie's relationship with Joel and Abby's own redemption.

This game is not without flaws, however. There are times where I was frustrated with the pacing and it was just boring at times. Some characters could probably have used a little more development such as Jesse and Abby's friends. Additionally, the structure of killing Abby's friends and then later learning more about them (when playing as Abby) was not the smartest move on Druckman.

The discontentment with fans is, in my opinion, over-exaggerated and uncalled for. It is completely ok to say a game is good but also has some serious flaws. But to establish a game as absolute garbage is tribal at it's finest. I can understand the anger with a much-loved character dying, however, a main character dying does not make the story bad. If you think it does, then don't watch "No Country for Old Men" or "1917." I also know that people hate the way he died, however, this was purposeful and meant to inspire intense anger within Ellie and the audience. Additionally, people in this day and age are so blinded by their political views that they will apply their tribal mindset onto any media they consume and will accuse it of having an "agenda." People are so fixated that there is an agenda with everything that they cannot just let it go for a playthrough of the game. I've never been much for political correctness and whatnot, but never once did I think "Wow, Naughty Dog is encouraging an agenda and this is too political for me." People think the entirety of this game is an "agenda" or "doesn't care about its fans" or whatever. First, we need to realize that stories should never be created solely on fan service. A story is written by an author and we as the readers/gamers experience this story and make our interpretations. Fan service is for the toxic and tribal people who decide what an author writes through mob rule. I do not feel comfortable demanding that these creators or any creator make media for how I like it and only me. I let them make the choices and tell their story, and then I make my interpretation. I do not usually establish a story as 100% bad because that is usually never true (unless it's an extremely garbage movie/game with nothing for it but a cash grab).

This game has some annoying flaws and is far from perfect. I found this game to be excellent in some of its storytelling aspects, but questionable in some of its choices. Do not let anyone tell you how you should like a game or berate you for liking a game that they don't. Try to play the game with an open mind and try to remember that not everything in the entire world has a political agenda. This is a story about humans, and politics should be the least of your worries when playing this game. This game is very divisive and polarized when it comes to opinion, however, in actuality this game is really just in between average. But It is up to each individual on how they interpret the game, but try not to be influenced by the mob. Do not listen to me or what anyone else says, play the game and you decide for yourself if this game was worthy of a playthrough.

Sorry for the sloppy English, for a game that is acclaimed for its story, the last of us 2 really tries to keep an adult story, but fails miserably, ellie kills everyone on her way to complete her revenge, does not forgive a guy who makes a sandwich for her in a **** apocalypse, but at the last minute decides to forgive the only person who never deserved to be forgiven.
Who thought that would be a good idea?
Absurd script decisions, which look like I'm playing any game but the last of us.
Plot armor to be laughed at, the game tries desperately to get you connected with the character of abby, again failing miserably.
The only good thing about this waste of game is the graphics and the gameplay.

Due to the fact that the Great Character, the man who became Ellie's adoptive dad and who had a lot of knowledge about survival, came some no name and just tortured, killed Joel with a stick, this ruined the game and the relationship both to the game and to Naughty Dog itself. I would really like to somehow revive the chtoli in the third part of Joel's game. I just can't get over what this woman did to Joel. Although the story of The Last of I give The Last of Us Part II is certainly not a masterpiece from the confusing and overall out of-character Joel’s death is etc..
The gameplay is not one of the best but it surely is an improvement from the first game, with more assessable areas to go through and the more mechanics added.
The graphics are nonetheless astonishing to look at, possibly the best thing of this game, but something it shouldn’t be judged to review a game.

Here’s what I’d rate the game separately from the overall rating:

    Story: 2
    Gameplay: 6
    Graphics: 10

Overall, I really enjoyed playing The Last of Us Part II, even with its confusing story, the gameplay was certainly something enjoyable to play. But it’s not a masterpiece unlike the 1st game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoy the first two thirds of the game. Although a lot of people are upset by Joel’s death, it does make for a good story arch for Ellie. The combat and ambience was pretty good during the journey in Seattle. It goes down hill once Abby confronts Ellie in the theatre, and we’re jolted into some eight hours of Abby’s backstory. It is necessary to understand that her father was a firefly, but it that portion of the game should’ve ended there. Abby’s story would make for a good DLC, similar to Ellie’s Left Behind DLC, but it wasn’t enjoyable because of it’s placement in the main story. I also feel there was nothing that stood out about Santa Barbra. Their big showdown could’ve, and probably should’ve happened in Seattle. Besides changing the scene a little and briefly introducing a new faction, the Santa Barbra sequence just a shorter repeat of Seattle. I found the ending especially horrendous. It addresses nothing in regards to Ellie’s broken relationship with Dina and JJ, how Tommy might react to Ellie’s sign of mercy, or just generally how Jackson was changed by everything. It seems the theme was generally that you should always be aware of how your decisions affect those around you, but that idea is tossed out the door in the final scene. It seems the game was meant to end in Seattle, but the devs felt the game was short, so they threw extra needless fluff in to pad runtime. A decision that drastically lowered the art and potential the game had. I really wanted to like this game, I even have the Firefly insignia tattooed to my forearm, but everything after the initial confrontation between Ellie and Abby, the game went downhill. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think this game would have been a lot better had the story been told in a different order. It seems most people spent the majority of Abby’s campaign with a mentally of just getting through it to get back to the confrontation we’ve been working toward the entire first half of the game. I found myself frustrated at how far Abby’s campaign strays from Ellie’s, how we were left with a cliffhanger on her end only to watch Abby go on a journey that has (basically) nothing to do with her. I think this could have been somewhat remedied had we played through Day 1 of Seattle as Ellie and then the same day over again as Abby. That way you make it to Seattle as Ellie and start your quest to find Abby, followed by the same day as Abby, knowing that Ellie will not find her that day. On Day 2, you get even closer to Abby’s whereabouts as Ellie and then play as Abby, who is on her own journey and has no idea that Ellie is even a threat. You know Ellie won’t find her, so you’re left in anticipation of Day 3, which leads up to the confrontation with Abby from Ellie’s perspective. Cut at exactly the same place and start Day 3 of Abby’s campaign, knowing it will ultimately lead her to the theatre with Ellie, but with no idea of how. The anticipation to see the conclusion of the confrontation would still be there, but the frustration would be stifled as we wouldn’t have to wait so long to get it. We also might start out Abby’s campaign with a bit less animosity had we not known she would kill Jesse on top of having already killed Joel. The storyline could have been kept exactly the same and it would have been more fun to play.

That being said, I think the game did what it set out to do. It isn’t a game you play to feel good or relax. It’s a dark story set in a dark world and leaves you with an uneasy feeling. Having played the first game as Joel and Ellie, you automatically want justice for Joel’s death and happily go along with Ellie’s plan to hunt down Abby. Even as things get darker, you still feel Ellie’s thirst for Abby’s blood and go right along with it. Then you’re put in Abby’s shoes, realizing that Joel killed her father in the first place, which changes the circumstances. This is how the cycle of violence is introduced: Joel killed Abby’s dad, so Abby killed Joel, and now Ellie is after Abby for killing Joel. You’re then taken on a journey with two kids as Abby, and although the adventure is still deadly, it is a stark constrast to Ellie’s. Ellie is out for blood while Abby is out to help these two kids who seem to be enemies to everyone. It makes you question every action you’ve performed as Ellie in the first half of the game, but it still doesn’t quite sniff out the want for revenge. Unfortunately, it is pretty obvious in the storytelling that this was the intention of the writers and it doesn’t flow as naturally as it should. The message came through loud and clear when it would have made more impact had it been more subtle.

That being said, it still worked on me. I was ready to kill Abby the entire game and when I finally got the chance - as I (as Ellie) held her below the water and slowly drowned her - I wanted to stop. Watching her struggle to get up to breathe did not make me feel any better. It made me feel worse. As much as I wanted to feel some gratification that justice for Joel had been served, this didn’t feel like justice. I think Ellie and I realized at the same time that there would never truly be any justice for Joel, no closure to mend our broken hearts. Killing Abby isn’t going to do a damn thing for Joel or for Ellie. So I was happy Ellie stopped, though I didn’t feel anything near happiness at the conclusion of the game. I was left feeling hollow and, well, uneasy. This wasn’t the game I wanted, not for these two characters I hold so dear, but it is realistic, unlike the happy ending I always imagine for Joel and Ellie.

As for the gameplay, if you enjoy the mechanics of the first game, you’ll enjoy the ones in this game as well. There are a few new mechanics, such as going prone to lay on your stomach and jumping farther distances, but most are taken directly from the first game. There are collectibles and puzzles, just like in the first game, but there’s a nice open-world area in the first part of Ellie’s campaign that you don’t get anywhere else in the series. Most combat levels have multiple ways to advance, using stealth or attack. The maps didn’t seem as linear as they were in the first game, with more locations having multiples paths to choose from to make it through.

Overall, I gave this game a 6 because I think it’s a great game in a lot of ways, but the timing of the storytelling - particularly the hours-long stretch of having to play through Abby’s campaign before reaching the conclusion of her and Ellie’s confrontation - caused me so much frustration that I couldn’t enjoy it for a few hours.

Finally, I got some time around to really get into this game and avoided major spoilers and the game itself, even though they were flowing left and right on the internet. I got the game for free. I didn't want to play it nor pay for it because of the controversies surrounding the game itself. But viewing those damn gorgeous graphics and visuals, I was in awe. They were photo realistic. The game mechanics are a serious upgrade from the first game and I enjoyed every second of it. But boy oh boy, here I come to the worst part of this game - the story. I respect the balls to kill of a beloved character and see what they've done, but nope. After the first half of the game I quit when I started playing Abby, because 1) I hated it, I didn't feel connection nor compassion towards her, even though the game wanted me to. I just didn't. Playing her was a chore. They could have introduced her to me beforehand, before everything, and maybe just a big maybe, this game could've been better for me. But that is not what happened. At this point, this game is just not canon for me. It's a big flop from the first game, and it could have been way better. But hey, if you love gorgeous visuals, combat and music and you don't really care about narrative, this is your gem. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Disappointed by how the writers treated the two titular characters would be an understatement. I especially did not like playing as Abby, a character I had no motivations to like for obvious reasons, especially towards the end when you play her to "defeat" Ellie. During this scene, I was like WTF? I about just rage quit the game during the quick time event where it tells you to basically choke out Ellie during this scene. So, basically I played as Abby for 12+hrs not caring two **** about her or her motivations and had to deal with a bad revenge story on top of it. Gameplay was fine, obviously graphics were great. That alone doesn't make a game what it is. I'm sorry for Ellie and Joel.

Update: After having some time to marinate and self reflect on my thoughts I've raised my score. Do I like the story? No. Do I respect the game developers? Yes. Am I devastated by the direction they went? Yes. I raised my the score due to the impressive rope physics haha. Now, will I happily play this game again? Probably not. There was a lot of impressive set pieces in the game, but the story killed it for me. So, final update. Thanks.

Final Update: Year later - I have had a chance to play the game again. I've settled down some on the director's choice/approach. I definitely see the game as a technical achievement and I can see the amount of time put into the game. The game is difficult to replay given the outcome of events. In our own pandemic, I felt closer to the story this time around and for that, there was some kind of solace or acceptance of the inevitable this time around. I hope Part 3 comes so we can find out what happens to Ellie, not so much Abby.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. IMO, people over exagerate on both sides. Yes, i agree the plot is not as good as the first one, specially if you put one against the other. I mean if you consider your expectations after the first game. And, truth be told, no one knew what would happen, right? the plot was really open ahead of us. the only plot hanging there was how and when Ellie would learn about Joel's making.
maybe that's why people are so mad about this one. They expected something else (me included, don't get me wrong) but, hey, it's not like this game is THAT piece of garbage as everyone's saying.
The major problem for me is that expectation hanging there.
If this was the first game of a serie it would be fantastic. that's why in my head i gave this one two separete ratings. For the game as a sequence it's 6 or even lower. It was a bold move, what they've tried on the plot, but bold moves can go wrong, and when they do it will probably be twice as catastrophic.
I hate how little they let us play as Joel, hate how terrible of a person they portraited Ellie in the game, hated how much they forced us to like Abby (I'M SAYING THAT EVEN THO I LOVED ABBY. They just didn't have to pushed the palyer so hard toward liking her. It wasnt subtle at all) and if it was a movie, the oscar of the worst editting would fit it perfectly. Swaping between Ellie and Abby was too much, and too often, etc. Thats the thing, again. the expectation. What we wanted to happen. And I'm not even saying dont kill Joel (or any other character) but it wasnt respectful. It wasnt well done. It was dumb. Like a n obvious excuse for the plot.
We had one game, one DLC and years and years of knowing and loving Ellie and Joel. I dont think anyone expected this, and I can'1t imagine anyone from Naughty Dog to think about this idea as good. (except "the head" behind it, probably)
IDK, i'm sad about the game. and not the sad I'd like to be if the story was better writen.
again, if it was a new IP, it would be an 8, maybe 9.
as the sequal to one of the best games ever, I can't rate it more than 7

-Performance is overall good but they were horrible glitches sometimes and bugs.
-AI and Difficulty customization is a thing that every studio should consider but yeah must have been expensive! You can even customize the overall look of the game.
-This game took me 26 hours to beat and I still felt that I didn't check every corner.

The biggest problem I have with this game is the story.
It has phasing issues and very questionable choices. I honestly understand why some people won't finish the game because of those choices. Some people act out of character sometimes and after a couple of scenes, I understand the hate. I think some choices are forced which makes it sometimes feel like a bad episode of a tv series. Now I won't say that the story is absolutely horrible because it isn't but it could be a LOT better! It's a revenge story, I love revenge stories but I think the motives and shock value that game shows sometimes felt off.
Even I said that the story isn't horrible, right now after finishing it, I don't feel to start it again anytime soon... right now it feels like it isn't worth it because of those choices ND made. After end credits, I just felt a hole in a chest. It feels like a one-off to me which is not a good sign. The ending got me hard and I can relate to it but I know for someone that isn't their cup of tea. Simply the game lacks a proper conclusion to its characters and story.

The Last of Us didn't need a sequel IMO. We had a game with simple gameplay but with a good story and loveable characters but now after 2 and what happens to some characters imagining going back to The Last of Us 1 breaks my heart. Right now I just hope that The Last of Us part 3 will not be a thing.

The Last of Us 2 is the beautiful pinnacle of showing how games have changed and how brutal they can be but it trembles badly on the story and it can leave you feeling hollow at the end.

    - Ellie's stealth take downs take too long throughout half the game, which you can upgrade for a faster takedown in the skill tree, which I think is stupid.
    - Dina/Jesse are dumb in combat as well as stealth situations.
    - It was somewhat painfully boring playing as Ellie in her flashbacks as I thought it could've been more of a cutscene then gameplay and that it made the game seem longer than what it is supposed to be.
    - Some of Abby's skills in her skill tree should've been in Ellie's skill tree.
    - Some skill tree options don't seem appealing and seem wasteful to spend on as you have to spend your credits on one skill in order to unlock another skill that actually seems appealing.
    - I don't like how Ellie holds a grudge against Joel for saving her life.
    - Felt like the journey throughout the game was kind of wasted because of how the game ended.

I am neutral with how the game ended, but like I said I felt like the journey to the end was kind of wasted and just when you thought the game was over it is not and at some point I just wanted to be done with the game as it just seems to drag on in certain parts of the story. I believe in my eyes a 7/10 is a fair rating as I know a lot of work went into this game and even though there are some major flaws I thought it was still a good game. Knowing what I know now I would not buy this game at full price. 5 years from now more or less we might see The Last of Us Part 3 and if they do plan on making it hopefully they will have learned what they did wrong with this game to make improvements on the next game.

This game Id give a 6, purely for the graphics. I don’t agree with the 0s at here. It wasn’t a great game, but to give it a 0 isn’t fair. There was some fun moments and the graphics were insane. It felt the same as the old game and extremely frustrating at times. It just doesn’t feel like a 2020 game. Understandable for a lower budget game, but not for one with a high budget like this. The background music was not on par with the original game. When I played the original, the guitar made me feel more emotions when playing the game. I would have liked to see more of that in this game, especially with the few scenes they showed with Joel giving the guitar to Ellie.
The story I didn’t care for at all. This is my opinion. Killing off the main character maybe not the best choice. This could have paid off if they introduced better characters, which they didn’t. I didn’t care for any of the new characters. The story was just not even close to how good it was in the first game. I found myself checking my phone during cut scenes, where in the first, I was glued to the screen. All in all, not a terrible game, but definitely not great. The first was one of the best games I’ve ever played. Ive played it multiple times. It was revolutiionar. This one I wont replay. To be honest, I debated not finishing it many times. For the time and budget available.

Serious save/load/continuity issues. (Useful exploit for speed-runners though.) Molotovs are useless. Dramaturgy issues (during the tutorial I had to control an unknown, androgynous woman for unknown reasons, who had no back story, and it wasn't clear why is she in the game). Graphics are good (excluding winter). Gameplay and exploration is good.

The game play, graphics and music are all there. I see the way the story is trying to show the cycle of violence but could have been told with better pacing. The talent and effort from naughty dog can be seen but the story has some good ideas but is not executed in the best light.

The 2 part of the game come. Such a boring experience playing as a character which you hate from the start and you are forced to understand why she killed joel. I just dont care about her story I wanted her dead because I loved joel. And this part was just dull side of the game. 4/10 this part had only 2 good moments. Superzombie in the hospital and finally her End. Which we knew from the start of that part what will happened. And there is a ending. Oh boy how much was I dissapointed. Ellie wanted here revenge and she got nothing. That was only extrnded ending nothing more. The last of us 1 was much better. This was solid and for me 7/10 Expand

Giving it a 0/10 untimely isn’t really a effective way of directing criticism. If you have issues either don’t buy it or return it and get a credit wherever you hit the game from. With that out of the way my personal score is a 6/10 the combat feels virtually the save a few extra gimmick like animals and such. The combat in the first game wasn’t the best but the story and writing carried it above what the combat was. However this game doesn’t have that luxury. The writing is unfortunately forced and contrived characters acting completely contrary to the previous game. And while time has passed the erratic nature of the time jumps is leaves the story feeling disjointed and unfocused. The games story often times has flashbacks with flashbacks. Creating a lack of cohesive focus. With the marketing focused on playing Ellie in reality playing another character for have the game. And that new character just isn’t written well. Combine that poor writing with obvious favoritism, she gets all the best combat sections, all the best weapons. I bought the game under the assumption that I’d be playing Ellie. This disconnect is caused by her killing Joel within the first hour. This was a terrible idea as it make us try to like a character that murdered the protagonist of the previous game we had gotten attached to. The Graphics while beautiful to me aren’t as important as gameplay, or a satisfying story. The forced nature of the story of what amounts to the theme of revenge and murder runs counter intuitive to the fact you can’t not kill people. The game seemingly wishes to judge you by making all of the deaths around you sound horrifying with gurgling noises, people calling for their mom. The fact the story has a, animal die to make the player feel bad when we learn who the owner was is just imposed by the fact we can’t not and Ellie has no way of knowing some random dog was someone else’s. This is why people dislike the game. The forced, and contrived nature of it. I never felt it could live up to the first because the bar was set too high. 6/10 the combat has little improvement, the graphics are beautiful, but poor pacing, writing, story, and character ultimately drags it down. It’s not a bad game and for the most part is competently made. The problem with subverting expectations is that you run the risk of alienating the audience you already have. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. [SPOILER ALERTS] Rating 6/10

This game simply looks and sounds incredible and as an RPG lover, the first few scenes just make you stop, look around and rejoice at how lucky we are to have games that can look and feel like this.

The playing style picks up pretty much where it left off with the benefit of jumping, swimming and crawling for all characters. The jumping and falling can feel a little clunky if i'm being picky, the swimming works well although perhaps could have been utilised more. The crawling/proning is the best of the new skills and as a stealth type player really enjoyed the benefits and options this added to my playing style.

The scavenging and artifacts are exactly the same, if you're into it, great, if not, you can bypass most of it. I guess there is only so much you can do here, so not too bothered by the lack of development.

I was disappointed with changes made with player and weapon upgrades. The player upgrade system is muddled and frankly becomes a mute point to the game. Your upgrades just don't become noticeable or of any real value, especially compared to the amount of work and exploring it takes to build up enough resources. I felt like could have completed the game on Hard setting without any player upgrades making the whole point of it redundant.

Weapon upgrades again i felt didn't really offer too much given the amount that needs to be scavenged. It was less muddled than player upgrades but felt the new swanky visuals of upgrading your weapons was the best part.....which says a lot.

The situations/ scenarios you find yourself in can be hit and miss. Some I really enjoyed, some seemed under or over developed.  Massive open spaces with literally nothing to do or too regularly were just used and some kind of ambling dialect storyline type section to avoid excessive cut scenes. Then you'd be swept into a sudden stronghold of infected or factions. Then you'd be back to another cut scene or dropped into a completely different character/timeline altogether. It all felt very inconsistent.

So for me the technical side was amazing but the playthrough was too jumbled.

Then there is the storyline. In my opinion, its biggest downfall. I was initially fully engaged with the game, mouth open and slightly traumatised by Joel's sudden departure. It was a shock and awe approach of which I was gutted, but thought they'd bring us back in line with some timeline and character (Ellie & Joel) swapping.  What we got was 3/4 of the game completely detached from the two very players and relationship you fell in love with during part 1.

As much as the game was a spectacle to play for the most part, I just didn't want to be playing it!  The best way I can describe the feeling of sheer disappointment is that I could only have really enjoyed this game if i had never played part 1.

Joel is tossed from the game, cast aside to make way for new characters, his role in the game is literally reduced to cut scenes. Ellie gets very little character development other than a bitter protagonist on a revenge rampage. She still ends up with everyone she loves either being killed or leaving her, which just leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. Although you play as Ellie I still felt, like Joel, her best bits all come from cutscenes. Their relationship was just used as toilet paper for the rest of the new adventures. There really is nothing else I can say. They completely messed this dynamic up. It's very sad.

For me, this made any viable buy-in to Abby and her narrative completely tarnished. I was only able to enjoy Abby's storyline in small pockets, ruined by either the jumping around of timelines or by the return of the disappointment I felt at how much they were messing this game up.
Abby's storyline really should have been a DLC and seperate story, much like we got in part 1. You could have engaged with it better, as you'd be prepared to work through it from the other side of the storyline. It was topical, relevant and groundbreaking but ultimately underwhelming because your heart wasn't in it.

Abby and Lev essentially become what Joel and Ellie were in part 1 only with a less stereotyped set up. Personally I think the poor handling of Ellie and Joel completely distracts you from the new storyline and characters.  It should have been something profound but they end up missing that target too. You let Abby get killed, fall off ledges, want her to fail, all because you haven't waited 7 years to play the person who tortured and killed Joel. It just didn't work.

I can't get over how much they let go of the gold dust they created in part 1. It could and should have been so much better.

So my heart wants to bomb the rating as it misses so much. But take away the  emotional attachment from part 1 and it is a stunning looking, dark game with some barrier breaking, brilliant sections.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I refrained from judging until I made it to the end of the game and now I actually understand why this game is so low-rated by the players. To begin with: the story itself turned out so shallow, despite the deep drama and emotions of the characters. I actually feel a little waste of time by playing a game of blind revenge without any high cause. Eye for an eye is what it's all about. Frustrated about wasted lives, all the losses that character had to face in the name of... revenge. Comparing to pt.1, pt.2 feels and looks so immature. Oh well and last but not least: the agenda, that what actually makes you feel homophobic. You are fed with gay stories all the way, and when the storyline told about the Scar boy/girl (I couldn't tell in the end) with self-identification issues It look ridiculously squeezed into the hard post-apocalyptic world. When I completed the story of pt.1 I hoped that there would be no sequel that would ruin the feel of delight. And then pt.2 happened. Game mechanics are pretty much the same, detail level is impressive as before, Naughty Dog raised the level once again, the difficulty happens to be easier than pt.1, but pt.2 compensates being literally crowded with enemies. This is my first review and I really wanted to explain why this game was given all the cold. Try it for yourself. Expand

Pretty sure if someone killed your parents and you virtually knew nothing else about that person aside from the fact that they might be well regarded by other people you know nothing about - you might also have a vengeful view of that person.
Maybe give the game a chance to tell its story from her perspective instead of focusing on your own love for a character. The whole thing serves as a catalyst for the story telling, morons.
Unless you just want 1-dimensional, good vs evil characters in TLoU... Despite that not being what even the first game is about.
