This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ellie is an adult now and we get to see her again after several years. However her story is plain and isn't anything much more but an ordinary revenge journey. She is conflicted almost by anything during the adventure whether it's her closed ones telling her to abandon the revenge or a few minor flashbacks that make her quit.

Abby, who is immediately being antagonized by the game in the first hour, is trying to be redeemed with her own story. Players then should have an idea on how she feels. Her story is more diverse than Ellie's but the characters involved with Abby are not likeable and doesn't make the players invest more interest in them. You simply cannot make players to love the bad guy! Even if you give her an entire story on how she saves other people it still cannot be justified with how she brutally kills someone who players love the most from the first game.

The best part of the game for me was the relationship of Ellie and Joel. We get to see many emotional moments and even the following confrontation about Joel's decision from the last game. These flashbacks look like some form of a grief present for a death that was written quite badly. I still believe that Joel should have died in a proper way than simply being bashed by a golf club. Perhaps it's just the game's main intention as not everything is your cliche superhero game, many characters just simply die.

Ending is unfortunately disappointing. It feels prolonged rather than completed. Ellie didn't achieve anything but loss and Abby is the only character who would benefit from this fiasco. All things aside this is definitely not a bad game, it just cannot live up to the hype or the quality of the first game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. On thinking back on the story in the weeks after slowly savoring it, it's too easy to praise the idea of the story while forgetting how it unfolded. It is easy to remember the warmth and allure of wintertime Jackson, Dina and Ellie's friendship, the moving sorrow of the flashbacks, Ellie's grief and trauma, and the poignant look into the destructive nature of revenge. I have thought on that moral lesson, that revenge prevents loved ones from growing old together and sharing experiences over many years of life.

However, thinking back on the experience of the story weeks after playing it brings one danger: my imagination will make those good qualities I listed in the last paragraph seem better, more fleshed out, or more subtle than they actually were while playing through. So, while my idea of the story (or my memory of it) will dwell in the simple life of wintertime Jackson, remember Ellie's friendships, the sorrow of the flashbacks, and Ellie's grief and trauma, those aspects were in reality glossed over. In retrospect, my memory might praise the moral lesson on revenge by making it seem as if it were more subtle than it actually was, but the message was not subtle: it required half the length of the game, and that half tearing our attention away from the engrossing emotional life of Ellie, who is perhaps the most beloved character of the PS3/4 era.

Therefore, I gave a 7 for the fact that the game teases the player with the allure of wintertime Jackson and the promise of being with Ellie through the stages of her grief and trauma, but instead, rushes past these aspects. We had no glimpse whatsoever into the progression of Ellie's grief during her and Dina's cross country journey to Washington. Such a journey, which is the allure of the TLOU world, was happily skipped; not one moment of that journey was shown, which disoriented me. For a game about the cycle of revenge, glossing over the early stages of grief, which could've at least had one dedicated section in say Idaho in the cross country trip, was a huge missed beat. How can I align myself with Ellie when she had a 3-4 month time skip to process her grief, whereas I had but a few minutes? Being enslaved to their narrow theme of the degrading nature of revenge, the game puts the player in a cannon, so to speak, while we are still enjoying our winter patrol and rushes to shoot us past everything between that section and Ellie's confrontation with Abby in Seattle.

By putting Ellie's burning desire for revenge front and center for most of the game, we don't get to explore other aspects of her inner, emotional life, which would give more weight to her destructive revenge. Because we don't get to dwell in a segment showing her simple life in Jackson (going to the sledding resort or lake with her friends for example), we don't fully appreciate what she gives up in her revenge mission. Because we don't see enough glimpses of Ellie's emotional turmoil between Joel's death and Seattle, we aren't made to appreciate the fire behind her revenge. Those are left to the imagination. And when TLOU2 teases us with the greatness of their visual and emotional fidelity in their characters, I can't help but feel disappointed that those moments are left to my imagination rather than fleshed out with cutscenes and playable sections. Leaving what I think are crucial elements to Ellie's development to the imagination is worthy of a 7 no matter how good the journal entries are. Relegating Jackson life and the cross country to journal entries was a big slap in the face.

Lastly, Abby's section would've worked as a shorter segment not only to spare time for Ellie's emotional development early on, but also to enhance the moral lesson of the story by being more subtle. Any work that is didactic to whatever degree cannot hide its didactic nature from the audience. Making the player play 10 hours as Abby, introducing and focusing on five of her friends throughout, not only weakens the moral lesson by being overt, but takes away from the intimacy that made TLOU1 great. That sense of intimacy, which makes the world seem bigger, scarier, and relationships cozier, is watered down when there are too many characters added. Not to mention that most of that 10 hours is spent trudging through some of the most dense shoot-em-up sections in game, which add no depth to her story at all.

TLOU2 teased at aspects of Ellie's inner life that should've been explored, but never did. Relegating important aspects of Ellie's emotional world to journal entries (for Jackson life and the cross country journey) is disappointing. The time spent trying to flesh out Abby's five friends could've been used to delve more into Ellie's emotional development. Here's a quote from the Pali Canon to sum up my views on spreading the story thin across too many characters in a game founded on intimacy:

    One alone is like Brahma,
    two, like devas,
    three, like a village,
    more than that:
    a hullabaloo.

Does the world need another TLOU2 review? Probably not, but did the world need a sequel to what is still one of the best games of all time? It would appear that it did not either.
To give the game a zero, as so many have, is really not giving credit where credit is due. There are things to like about it; the gameplay to cutscenes are very smooth, the dodge button is a good addition, the graphics and motion capture are spectacular, and the voice acting is fantastic.
Even the worst characters are very well voice acted.
The lighting is cold and somewhat menacing, the stealth mechanics are all there from the first one and the infected are even more terrifying than before.
So with all of this good, what makes this a game many people (including this reviewer) deeply regret spending their money on?
The game takes about 20-25 hours to play through. Around a vast majority of those are unbearable. Some games require grinding or tedious activities for a reward at the end. This was just a disappointment from start to finish. The wasted potential of the team who made this game is just heart breaking.
It seemed someone forgot that games are supposed to be fun, not some kind of hate simulator, where the player and the characters involved are the target.
The story was absolutely hackneyed, even to the point where the most “shocking” scene was basically ripped right off a well-known zombie tv series / comic book. You could almost feel the conceit of the writers coming out of the screen, which if frankly something that I have personally never felt from a game before.
I did not enjoy this game, it was ugly, hateful and violent, and no where near as clever as it thought it was. This really felt like it was written by an angry teenager who despised the first game so passionately, that he wanted to tear it down and spit on its remains. The first game was about something beautiful in a cruel and bleak world. A story like that is difficult to get right but TLOU part One achieved it with flying colours. The sequel seems to have all of the artistic value of a 90s slasher or exploitation film but some kind of disaster-artist-like smugness.
Without giving anything away, someone kills someone who kills someone and then someone else goes after them. In the end there was apparently a message about breaking the cycle. The families of the five hundred anonymous henchmen who were murdered for the sake of this realisation may disagree. And that’s it, it sounds simple because it was. I understood Mulholland drive the first time I watched it, so I doubt I missed anything that was too nuanced.
So, can I respect the effort and skill that went into making this game? Absolutely.
Would I recommend it, or play it again? No, I truly would not. As with all things, games are subjective. Maybe buy it on sale if you fancy yourself a nihilist or want to wear a beret and tell people they didn’t get it because it was too profound, otherwise your time could be better spent.

All the new gameplay mechanics, beautiful environments and crafting items are very top tier. But the story was so poorly executed and that's when it fell short for me. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright, just finished part 2... yes, I was crying like a little girl when Joel died during the FIRST 3 HOURS!! of the game (just fuken bananas). I really tried to give this game a chance, like I really wanted to find out where the story would take me since Joel had just been bludgeoned to death in front of Ellie (even now that sounds unbelievable)... So I did. I gave this game a chance. At first I was totally confused as to why I was playing as Abby???? Like, ok this is new, I'm supposed to build an emotional bond with this character I suppose (all the while thinking about Joel). I cried in this game, many times. I really wanted to love this game, and honestly I do. I think Part 2 is about growing up. Abby went from WLF back to her roots as a Firefly and found redemption by saving Lev. Ellie... she finally grew up out of the shadow of Joel (in the most cruel way possible), and she found peace with herself in the end. It was Joel's image that stopped her from killing Abby. I believe Ellie found peace and it cost her everything, her two guitar playing fingers, her girlfriend (with the big booty) and even a new baby. At least Tommy (sooooo happy he was alive, crippled by alive) will be happy to see Ellie. I guess, part 3 can still have Tommy, Dina, Ellie, and the baby. Maybe in part 3 we play as the baby, we can spend countless hours crawling on the floor and chewing on plastic toys.. in Santa Barbara of course.
In all honestly, coming from a true TLOU fan, and not expecting anything from part 2 but a continuation of Joel and Ellie's adventures... I give this game a solid 7 out of 10. I don't think there should be a part 3, if there is a part 3 don't even bring Ellie into the game, she might end up getting killed off by the writers. Alright, that's about all I have to say about that.
Oh, one last thing... after playing this game and finishing the game, The Last of Us part 2, I must say this... why couldn't have Joel just stayed home?????? Like, just NOT get killed in this story? The game could have been about Ellie, her pregnant girlfriend, Tommy and his hunting skills, Maria and managing the camp, literally anything else could have been a great main story, heck even Abby searching for Joel and finding redemption by saving Lev and his sister WITHOUT killing Joel off. That is the one thing I hate about this game, JOEL DID NOT HAVE TO GET KILLED to make a great story! He could have been out of town on a mission or just sick in bed recovering from a broken leg, or anything else. Anyway, that is why this game is a 7 out of 10. And now I go to sleep with a heavy heart.. may Joel Miller rest in peace.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I absolutely loved The Last of Us. I think it's one of my favorite games. The Last of Us Part II however is something different entirely.

At first I thought, "Why are so many people complaining about this game, it's great!", and it was, for the first hours. Then it kept going, and going, almost without purpose. Then when I thought I was going to see a climactic ending where maybe Abby was going to explain the reasons why she did what she did. Maybe, just maybe even do a little gameplay part with Abby. That little gameplay-part with Abby lasted another 12 hours. 12 hours of the game seemingly wanting to do little else than to show that Abby is a person too and that she's not all that bad and that she does have reasons for travelling the entire country to murder Joel.

I mean, in the end, it did kind of work. I liked Abby at the end more than in the beginning, but did it have to last THAT long? The story with Abby is interesting and such but there just seemingly wasn't any goal. The goal was only to get to place A, then get to place B, then to place C and so forth.
I don't get what Abby's drive was, I don't get why Abby suddenly doesn't mind turning against her own people AND not minding to kill anyone that the game so desperately tried to tell you she liked and cared for so much, in the beginning for two people she just met. Suddenly she cares so much for those people even though it puts her and her friends in danger. In the first The Last of Us it was so logical since Joel didn't have anyone else and since Ellie reminded him so much about his daughter but with Abby, why did she care so much about Lev?

To be honest, I wouldn't really mind that much if only it looked like the game was trying to tell something and not just look like it was making up a story on the spot. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that the game just seems way to long for as little as it ends up saying. The first The Last of Us I played through 4 or 5 times, it's also easy to play all over since it isn't that long, about half as long as The Last of Us Part II. And that always seemed worth it, for the experience, for the story, for the characters, kind of like re-watching a movie if you, like me, happen to also like doing. That's just not as inviting as The Last of Us Part II because of the length and the little story it has in those 26 or so hours I first put into it.

Then, obviously there's also a lot good about the game. The gameplay has improved tremendously. I like the weapons in Part II way more than in the first one. I also loved upgrading and that you have to get creative and adapt to what's happening, more so than the first one. Part II has more interesting environments, I think, and also lots more and different kinds of enemies, humans and infected alike. Like the Stalkers, which I'm sure everyone hates, not even necessarily in a bad way. Say what you want but the fact that there are so many different kinds of enemies, each requiring a different approach, makes it interesting. Especially when the game puts different kinds of infected, or even humans and infected, together.

The game looks amazing too! Even better than The Last of Us. Environments are more lush and often times more vast than The Last of Us. Naughty Dog also clearly tried to make The Last of Us Part II's environments at least, much less linear. Part II feels much more real because of the overgrowing plants everywhere and that the path you should take isn't always as obvious as The Last of Us. Further, nothing can compare to the sunny Santa Barbara at the end when you've been playing in dark, grey alleyways for a long time before that. Or The Farm before Santa Barbara, which was also a nice change of scenery, and pace too.

Without judging the ending, which in the end, I did kind of like. I would much rather play The Last of Us Part III with only a single character, Ellie preferably of course. And a The Last of Us III we will get guessing by how indefinite, and somewhat disheartening Ellie's ending was. I might even call it cruel how Naughty Dog left Ellie after getting us to like her so much after two games.

That leaves us with my score, 6/10. Maybe the game deserves even slightly more, so make that a seven if you wish. But it doesn't deserve any less. Even though I don't always agree to how the story was tackled and the messages it's trying to send, the gameplay and aesthetics of The Last of Us Part II make up for much of it. Definitely since I would still recommend everyone to try the game for themselves.

Gameplay wise, the game is great. Graphics, animations and everything related to technical stuff is great aswell. Naughty Dog does an amazing job in that sense, just like they did with Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us 1.

But the story in this game is terrible. Period. I only give the game a 7/10 because of the gameplay and technical stuff I mentioned before, because, story wise, it is a 3/10 at max. I'm okay with Joel dying because many games kill their main character, and it's fine as long as it means something, but the problem is that here his death is for nothing. Why does Ellie forgive Abby? Because 'killing is bad and revenge is bad'? How about the hundreds of people Ellie killed while searching for Abby then? Makes no sense.

Finally, the 10 hours we are forced to play as Abby are simply boring. I'm not interested in her. The game tries to make you bond with Abby by making her play with dogs and showing her human side and her conflicts. Look, I understand everyone has a human side and their reasons and motivations, but she killed one of my favorite characters, sorry but I'm not going to bond with her.

Druckmann really hated Joel and Ellie, and we hate Druckmann. I hope this is the last videogame he makes. I'm so sorry for all the art wasted thanks to his horrible writing.

Games are there to be fun to play, to have a meaningful ending as well as to have a strong desire to play it again. Not to destroy that matrix so you can say we did something different. The world design and attention to detail is outstanding and deserves all the praise. Gameplay is a little weak, many missed opportunities to utilise Ellie's immunity by incorporating it into the combat. The story is poorly written, the characters are bland and inconsistent. The characters feel like a puppet to the narrative rather than driving the plot forward themselves. The sequence of events are poorly managed and remove from the climax. All together, the story comes off as pretentious and trying to preach a narrative that it doesn't believe in itself Expand

Therefore, my excitement for this game was through the roof, I couldn’t wait to finish where the first game left off. However, the approach they took in telling this story in part 2 is absolutely terrible. The story is unnecessarily convoluted and pointless. What made last of us part 1 beautiful was it’s simplicity and the evolving relationship between Ellie and Joel. But for insanely strange reason, they completely destroyed what made the first game so beloved. I still can’t believe they deviated from what the first game built up.There’s are so many issues with the story that I could go on for hours about but this is all I feel like typing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gameplay is amazing, visuals are unreal, AI is insane, but my issue lies within the execution of the story. The last of us is one of my favorite game of all times, like most who played the sequel. While I knew Joel was probably going to be killed off, I hated that they did it so early. I get it was for shock, but it took them a decade to finally release a sequel and they just rip the guy out immediately. They could have done so much between the two characters they spent the entire first game establishing, but they decided to kill on off for shock value, and introduce one by really forcing in the presence of someone who they didn't acknowledge in the first game. The ending of the first was so iconic but then they just casually changed it for the sequel to make sense. Yes, Joel killed everyone to get Elly back, but the gameplay I performed wasn't what happened in the flashback in the second. Really took me out of it and made me hate the rest of the game. Including trying to get me to feel for the Abby character, which I didn't at all. Hated playing as her and I hated the switching between characters when I was hoping for a more RPG gear build up of one character. Expand

The Last of Us Part II takes the gameplay foundation laid by the first game and expands on it, but not always in positive ways. The cycling of human and infected enemies still keeps the experience pleasantly variegated, and to each group new classes have been added. These additions aren't unique enough to meaningfully shake up the experience, but the new ways in which we can approach them definitely do: dodging and counterattacking are rewarding new mechanics that make melee offense a much more worthwhile option, layering combat significantly, just like hiding in the tall grass, underneath vehicles and underwater amplifies the strategic options for stealth. Alas, these improvements, and combat as a whole, is severely undermined by the overwhelming size of areas. Levels are much bigger than they were in the first game, and although this might seem like a clear improvement, it becomes apparent after a while that their bigger size often makes the experience significantly worse than before. Areas are now so big that it often becomes extremely, embarassingly easy to alert the enemy only to then run away far enough to make their AI lose your tracks. By repeating this, the player can easily trivialize a significant chunk of the game, only because areas are so big that they allow you to. Nonetheless, many areas are contained enough to prevent this, and the human AI is notably improved since the first game. Plus, exploration is always rewarding thanks to the hunt for materials, greatly immersive, and environmental puzzles are now decently creative, if still repetitive. The characters of The Last of Us Part II retain the same level of believability and psychological depth that made the first game special, but the story itself lacks the same spark, being thematically repetitive as it is entirely devoted to a moral lesson that is extremely overused in media.

Joel is downgraded, Ellie has lost all charisma, Abbie is just not engaging.
I have no problem with gay characters as there were a lot of them in the first chapter too and they were well written but now a minor transgender smells a lot like pushing the woke agenda and it was of no importance to the plot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics Look Next gen.Sound effects sounded true and brutal.Gustavo songs far and few.my favorite songs came from all of ellies guitar playing, the song that joel plays for her in the beginning of the game.ND has found a great way of using the swipe bar on the PS4 controller allowing you to play guitar. The combat the same as the first game and is frustrating at times.the melee system is kinda clunky, the shooting is very slow and inaccurate. If anything i feel the prone button came in way more useful then the jump and they should have hyped that up more because it was extremely useful and long overdue feature that was finally added. The dogs was a very bad choice in my opinion. Now the story. The first half playing as ellie was more or less fine. The joel death scene in particular should have been done a different way if he wanted to do that story.First off joel and tommy save abby and within 5min of gametime i think it was shes blowing his leg off and playing golf on his head. That specific part felt rushed, and not fleshed out.It was also out of character for tommy and joel to just reveal their base along with their names .The flashbacks in my eyes stole the show and really hit an emotional beat.My issue with this is they were far and few between. The first one in particular was sweet and a feel good sad moment for the player. So for ellies side of the game neil wanted to convey that she wants revenge for joel but it becomes pretty clear that is not the only thing that is bugging her.Throughout the flashbacks you find out that she is beyond upset with joel and finds out he lied about the hospital incident. So all the time your playing as ellie you slowly see her get worst and worst descending into darkness. They honestly could have just done ellies side up until she hunted down abby and exacted revenge. I felt the game did not need much of abbys side story at all.You could have just told her story via cutscenes throughout ellies trip to finding ellie.I did not enjoy playing as abby at all once i was forced too.As i got more into the cult part with lev i did take a tiny bit of interest but nothing huge.To me abbys section of the game felt almost like another game entirely. You find out that lucy(lev) was actually the trans player people were referring too.I dont think there was an agenda here.Lev becoming trans fit into the story of the seraphites not accepting him and hunting him down.So i dont feel that trans was forced into the game.i feel like ellies relationship felt true and honest,my only complaint is that ND chose to focus on fleshing out an unlikable character abby instead of a likeable character dina.I think the story would have been alot better exploring ellies and dinas relationship further as ellie slowly loses her mind to hate. Most of the charachters on abbys side i hated.Owen had good character ark and is the only one outside of yara and lev that i actually felt somewhat invested in.Now the ending parts of the game. You are forced to fight ellie as abby after she just killed jesse and what appeared to be a gunshot to tommys head.Trying to recreate that father/daughter relationship joel had just annoyed me and made me dislike abby more.no fault to laura bailey did a very good job and trying to make abby relatable and have empathy for. Then they show ellie back on the farm with dina.Tommy gives ellie all this info and wants her to finish abby. She doesnt think she can and tommy just starts hating on her because of it saying stuff way out of line.Whether its grief that he had or brain damage thats causing him to act like that it defintely does not feel true.the ending scene with abby and ellie fighting it out.The scene it self was well done.Sadly it ends with ellies 2 fingers getting bitten off and then letting abby just leave. This felt unsatisfied and pretty much made me question why this game was made even in the first place. If he was going to do that then he needed to spend more time emphasizing ellies departure into the darkness and how she just cant let the hate go instead of a side story about abby's fight with the seraphites. The ending scene when she arrives back to dina and the house is empty was pretty sad and did a good job emotionally but there was so much more room to emphasize with ellie they could have done to really bring a tear to your eye.I only got teary eyed during the final scene with joel and ellie talking about she just cant forgive him. This scene needed more because it was on the verge of being really emotional but its like the writers just decided to hold back.just an ok game and makes me sad that they chose to flesh out abby rather then focus on the true stars of the game joel and ellie. The game would have benefited more from flashbacks showing more of the anger she slowly kept getting towards joel finally leading up to an emotional ending scene where she finally tries to forgive him.Hell it would have been even better to have tommy give ellie a final letter from joel. An OK game Expand

explain to me the cheap death of joel. How a main character, so smart to have survived 25 years simply gets inside a house full of strangers with his same experienced veteran brother, both give out their names. Explain why we played as Abby half of the game when all we wanted was see her suffer. Explain how the game could have ended at peace but ellie decides to go after her again (thankfully), yet when she is just about to kill her finally, she has a stupid flashback of Joel (what makes me mad is that another flashback made her go after Abby again)and decides to spare her. In the end, ellie lost everyone, 2 fingers, didn't get revenge, but Abby got her revenge and got a happy ending with Lev. Wasn't this game abou Ellie's revenge? Didn't you want Ellie to get revenge? Who gives 2 **** about Abby honestly. **** that trash game. Neil **** and his stupid "deep" meaning ideas. The downfall is the absolutely horrible story they gave us for this. The characters aren’t the same from the last game and this game literally dumbed down Joel and had him get killed like a rat in the first two hours and then they try to make Ellie seem like the antagonist when she’s not and they try to make you care about Abby when a majority of the people who played through the story can’t stand her for the way she killed Joel. Oh and not to mention she killed Jesse like nothing too. Jesse was the only new character I was interested in and they kill him like that. Abby killed Joel, killed Jesse, almost killed Tommy and Dina, and she bit off Ellie’s fingers. Ellie’s killed lots of people trying to get to Abby and then she just lets her get away with killing Joel and Jesse and biting her fingers off. And at some point in the game when you play as Abby Ellie is a boss battle which no one wanted to play as Abby and every person I’ve seen play through this let Ellie kill them as Abby multiple times. This game could’ve been a masterpiece if it wasn’t for this horrible fan-fiction story telling. They can either remake this sequel entirely or they can redeem themselves with a third last of us with better story telling and not his fan-fiction bs! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I finished the game in 40+ hours first-run and mostly on Hard mode. My review includes SPOILERS.

I arrived at the score based on the following point deductions: -0.5 for glitches and enemies seeing thru barriers for hiding, -0.5 for over-emphasis on the sexual themes and messages, -3 for story.

I don't need to talk about the glitches and the over-emphasis on sexual themes. For me, these together caused a deduction of 1 point in total so it's not a big issue.

IMO the story was quite annoying because it put me in the driver's seat as a player rather than as a viewer. Perhaps it would have worked better if I was watching a movie or show instead? RE story I say the following:

First, it was very distasteful for me to have to use Abby after witnessing her kill Joel. Imagine someone spit some phlegm in your face and you try desperately to get it off asap, but you can't, and it becomes a slow and painful test of endurance. That's how I felt and I didn't like it. You are trapped using Abby for maybe 40% of the game. When it first hits you, you wonder when you are done with her so you can get back to Elly. I am a thorough gamer and I want to explore every nook and cranny. I mentioned my hours of play right away and you can see that I took like 3 times longer than the average gamer to finish. I suffered and endured the Abby scenario lol.

Second, Abby spared Elly twice and spared Dina and her baby. Elly killed Abby's pregnant friend. Let's say the dads were a trade-off (considering Joel a dad). The only reason why Dina and her baby survived was because Abby spared them at the behest of Elly. Why would Elly still pursue Abby after that? I thought majority wouldn't, but perhaps I'm wrong. It also turned Elly into a bloodthirsty monster. It was difficult for me to accept.

Third, this is the first game where I had a tremendously difficult time pressing the square button because of the story. This happened at the two Elly vs Abby sequences. I had so many openings to strike with the square button and I just didn't want to press it. This is what I meant about better to watch this story than to play the story. When I was Abby, I really didn't want to hurt Elly. The same applied vice versa. It was a driver's seat that I didn't want to be in.

Final thoughts... I gave the game a full chance. I headed in not knowing the spoilers. I reluctantly endured the Abby scenario. For those that found Abby fun to play the entire time, kudos. I'll admit I developed a soft spot for her at the end, but it took a lot of endurance. If I had known this before I started, I wouldn't play the game unfortunately. I'm sitting on the fence 50/50 on whether I would play LOU3.

I want to start off that I was never a big fan of the original game's gameplay. I found it a bit dull and repetitive and it never really made me want to play it again. I only played my second play through recently so that I could have the storyline fresh in my mind before playing part II. The story on the other hand was very well done. I would give the original an 8 overall for a score.I want to start off that I was never a big fan of the original game's gameplay. I only played my second play through recently so that I could have the storyline fresh in my mind before playing part II. The story on the other hand was very well done. I would give the original an 8 overall for a score. Part II pretty much follows the exact same gameplay and I again I found it dull and repetitive. It gets really boring when 40% of your gameplay is scrounging for supplies. I also think they should have had more development with the monsters. Whenever they stuck with that it was scary, tense, and fun. I think the most fun I had with the gameplay was fighting that big monster. It was different and it caught me by surprise. Fighting mostly humans got boring quickly.

    Graphics/Sound

Graphically the game looks amazing. There is a cutscene where it shows Abby waking up and it looked so real I thought it was a video. I also like realistic violent animations they added. A lot of people complained about that but I loved it. I also loved the little touches of humanity they sprinkled in such as people yelling their comrade's name when they died or when Ellie sneaks a stealth kill and she whispers things like "Got you f**ker!" I chuckled every time after a kill when Ellie would say something like, "Dick!" . LOL It was so Ellie, I loved it. The sound of people gurgling and choking on their own blood as you sliced their throats, it was so creepy and awesome. Job well done on that front. The music was great and the guitar playing was also a nice touch.

    Acting

Top-notch as expected. All of the actors involved are triple A VO and they even had Jeffery Wright who is a triple A Hollywood actor in a bit part. I thought that was cool.

    Story

This is where the game falters, I think. The overall story and morale were good it was just executed quite poorly. A lot of the mistakes made by the characters were just so strange it made it hard for people to believe it. Even though I loved playing as Abby it just didn't feel right switching over to her character when you reached the crescendo with Ellie. I heard someone else say it might have been better if they alternated chapters and I agree. I think that would have worked. I also think they were quite heavy-handed with the debbie downers (depressing aspects). It's like the game's main mission was to make you feel as miserable as possible. I like a sad story but this was just a bit over the top.

    Conclusion

Mediocre gameplay with little improvement from 8 years ago (which wasn't that great to begin with) coupled with a flawed narrative, plants this game firmly in Meh-sville.

Let’s imagine there was NO part one of this game, we’re introduced to this new character Ellie who see’s her friend Joel getting killed and then sets on this journey to seek vengeance. We play as Ellie and then as Abby.. This game would probably get 8-8.5. It’s by no means a perfect game, but it’s fun, not too bad of a story, great graphics, fun combat. However, Playing this game after the original game is definitely a disappointment. We’ve already built a connection with Joel and Ellie, and now we see Joel getting killed and then Ellie losing everything at the end of the game AND on top of that have to play for 10 hours as the character the killed Joel and expecting us connect to her! It felt exhausting and pointless, I just didn’t care about Abby, no matter how many times I interacted with the dog or played as her when she was young or went to the hospital where her father was killed! I DID NOT CARE. SHE KILLED JOEL. I played through the original game at least 5 times, probably 10. I finished part 2 and will never touch it again, that sums up the difference between the experiences we go through. Considering all of the above, it’s still not fair to give the game a 2 or 3, it’s clearly a well done game (mostly) and that’s why it’s a 6 for me. Expand

The game is also unnecessary long. The story keeps dragging and dragging for no reason. The writing is mediocre and at the end, the message of the story didn't even get conveyed properly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Lets get the obvious part out of the way. Visual, sound and acting ... all top tier so there really isn't anything people can complain about in terms of these 3.

Gameplay wasn't the highlight of the first game either. It is a very basic action and stealth gameplay, with light survival elements. Since this basically the same passable bare-bones gameplay loop with slight tweaks, that adds little to none to the experience and is there to fill out the actual gameplay sequences between cutscenes.

Now the bread and butter of the first game was its story. The actual setting wasn't anything new. But the thing is that the setting itself played secondary role to the actual characters. It just served the purpose if instigating events that would lead to Joel and Ellie meeting.
From there on, the actual story of a dead world, and the possibility of a cure was way overshadowed by the simple but effective dynamic between the two.
Joel could be the father he never got the chance to be, and Ellie finally felt like someone cared for her.
It was simple, but the small bits of bliss in an otherwise dark world kept people stuck to their screens.

The Last of Us Part II has almost none of that. It has 2 very short flashback sequences where the charm of the original game got to shine trough, but that's all.
The Last of Us Part 2 basically boils down to one major shock factor, that is showed in fairly early into the game, and the rest is a bore-fest of following the uninteresting new character, or the bleak revenge story that leads absolutely nowhere.

It has been said before when the first game was released, and sequel emphasizes this, but the first game was a wholesome story and experience, with a proper ending.

The game excels at some points, it has a really high technical level, the graphics are gorgeous the gameplay is an upgraded version of the gameplay on TLOU 1, definetly there are some things the game industry should learn from this game, but there is one thing that nobody should learn from this game and this is how to make a good story.

The story alone is not bad, its just not good, but what makes this story worst that others is that i follows a really good one. The characters on TLOU 2 feel out of place, they dont think or act the way that we learned from the first game, with any other characters without context this story may work but since they are using ones with a really strong background that makes everything break, aside from that the story fails in show itslef, the way the director changes the order of some events trying to hide from the player some info that the character knows really does not work, there are many cases in which an action of the character would be explained if we just knew what happened in the past, and the moment we get to know what happend it is already to late, this is a mayor spoiler but its almost known by everyone that joel dies, but the moment in which he dies is just out of place, the feelings of Ellie may be clear in the future, why is she so angry why is everythin worst, all of that we get ot know in the end of the game but its to late for us to relate to ellie, the most impact we get from some scenes its the scene itself, there is no context or background for us to feel anything, we just get to know the other side of ths story later on.

So yeah, maybe the game its an excelent showcase ok thecnical skills, but fails in what made TLOU a game to be remembered, its just a mainstream story told in the worst way posible, still it does not deserves the score most people are givin. I'd say that the game is not the wors but also is not the best it should be remembered as a failed attempt to make something great.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Summary: While it has better gameplay, awful pacing ruins the story and makes a narrative driven game suffer as a result.

There is no easy review of this game. The game isn't a ten nor a zero. It functions well, and has some improvements, but it isn't flawless. Not even close. The fact this game relies heavily on the story instead of gameplay really drags down the overall score.

Story wise, it's biggest problem is pacing. It is **** awful. The current pacing of the story is: Be with Joel and Ellie until Joel's Death. Split between Ellie and the new character Abby, with a little more emphasis on Abby. Multiple flashbacks, and even flash backing in flashbacks (never do that ever.) Then the climax. The pacing is awful and should've been rewritten. Here's how I would've done it.

Start off as Abby searching for a cure
Finds out it doesn't exist because of Joel
Goes on a manhunt for Joel (but doesn't know who it is)
    Switch to Joel and Ellie
Battles not only zombies, but also these slave traders that are in the game
    Crosses paths with Abby
Abby, not knowing that is the right Joel, befriends them
Joel and Ellie have their argument
Ellie tells Abby about Joel's decision (from LOS) in frustration
Abby realizes that is the Joel she is searching for
Abby (or someone else) kills Joel (Abby feels regret for doing so)
Ellie goes on her revenge trip
    Abby gets captured
Ellie finds Abby and have their final battle
Player decision to either forgive or kill Abby.

Puts that whole story in different context doesn't it? But that's just my thoughts.

Gameplay, Naughty Dog did improve it. Some tweaking with the aiming, and Abby is a good laugh to play as. She feels pretty OP, and it is a blast. Punching zombies, her unbelievable speed (with her body type), she's hilarious and fun. I feel like it gets forgotten about because of her storyline.

Anyway. It deserves the score it gets.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I was pretty hyped for this game. It starts strong with a lot of good character development and setting up the start of your adventure. It goes well till the 2nd half where you take control of another character who is not as interesting as Joel or Ellie. It is interesting to see the world from another point of view but this character comes off shallow as do her companions minus the dog. I love how the world has ended but trans rights need to be talked about. It killed the immersion because it feels forced and not natural. Just like the build of the 2nd character but it is what it is. I like the new infected types but you didn’t fight them enough. With the new more out there types it makes me excited with where they may go with them in the future. Combat felt the exact same as the first minus the dodge. Naughty dog isn’t known for its super deep gameplay but more so about how it brings gameplay and story together. In last of us 2 the story is strong but not the whole time and gameplay hasn’t improved very much. Forcing your political opinions regardless what side of the aisle you are on is something I’m not a fan of. Iv seen this compared to episode 8 of Star Wars and that is a fare assessment. Also the glitches. With all of this I don’t understand all the high scores but there is some good stuff here but we also have equip parts bad so to ke a 5/10 seems fair. Expand

I thought the graphics were amazing, and the sound was also excellent.

The big let downs here were the writing, combat system and searching for gear.

Searching for gear was a huge pain in the arse. Loot isn't obvious and the button to collect only appears within 1m or so of the gear. So you end up having to walk up and down along every set of cupboards in every room of every shop to make sure that nothing as well. You occasionally come across strange items that you can pick up and examine, but they don't do anything else.

In terms of gameplay I just found the weapon system way too clunky. You'd try to go into stealth mode, but instead changed weapons, or try and do a quick heal but get stuck there. it also seemed to me that when an enemies bullet hit you, you recovered a lot more slowly than the enemy did.

Finally just on the script, whilst it definitely seemed it was written as SJW bingo, the bigger failure is just making all the characters unlikeable. The only characters who were vaguely likeable (Joel and Tommy) are either killed off early on or get very little screen time.
I can understand what they were doing with the Abby backstory part of the game, but she just comes across as such a revengeful, angry character that I just wanted her part to end.
