What made the first game special for me, they showed how a deep connection could come from two complete strangers and it felt real.
In this game they throw in so much into the pot it creates a lot of weird plot holes and even after 30 hours I don't have a single character I really like.

This game turned into kinda... The Walking Dead: The Game. Regardless of what history tells us about how people in war act usually kind and help each other, all main characters in this game are straight up ****

But who knows, maybe you'll surprise me with Part 3 and...subvert my expectations, ba dum tss.

I won't go into any major spoilers but I will reflect on the plot a bit as it is the most important aspect of the game and what separates it from the first one. When it comes to game play it's pretty much the same which is a good thing. Combat is fun, violent and heavy. All of it amplified by the downright beautiful visuals and sometimes realistic animations. What's changed technically is that the crafting is a bit easier and now that Ellie can climb just about anything you have a bit more verticality in ways of dispatching your enemies. I like how the enemy AI are bit smarter now as they try to flank you and rush you more often. When they are under cover they will duck as soon as they see you point your sights at them. A nice touch is how they react to any given situation. If they see a downed partner they will react in anger or sadness by calling out their name or warning others. They will clue themselves in on your position and if your gun goes click click they will let one another know "she's out get her". Things like that and the atmosphere is dreary but very immersive. New enemy types include dogs and 2 new zombie variants one of witch is great and the other a bit too similar to another. They do add some cool boss battles and set pieces that were much needed and I won't spoil. Dogs, in my opinion, were more of an annoyance then anything else it could have been left out. What I don't like is that the game was said to have several semi open world sections where there was only one. It's not that I cared for it to have them but to give you only one section of the game like that seemed a bit odd to me. Also, as with many E3 demos, the gameplay did not look near as fluid as it did in it's demo. I thought that demo looked overly scripted and it was. Now for the story. Poorly directed, poorly written and tonally everywhere. The highly controversial plot is actually a good one that makes sense but it is told in such a messy way that it constantly took me out of it. Story progression is interrupted with flashbacks in such odd places where the tone goes from 100 to 0 in a second. Characters act in ways that don't make sense and by the end you will not care about a single one of them. The main theme is thrown out the window by the finish line. I couldn't help but think to myself how much better the story would be if it went a different way and how the directors/writers didn't see it that way. Movies are not shot in order. They shoot parts of the end, beginning and middle and then edit them to be in order. This game feels like it was shot that way but someone forgot to put them in order. It even feels like 2 games in one. I give the gameplay, visuals and sound a 5 and the story a 0. It is a game that I would only revisit for the gameplay sections and skip the cut scenes. Expand

So what do we get when we strip a heavily story based game out of it's story? Another mediocre zombie survival game with good visuals and gameplay from 2013. And quite frankly good visuals from Naughty Dog is not an acheivement anymore. They have the know how, they did it before with previous generations of PS, so it's not a big deal for them to use every genertion of playstation to it's limits. Quite frankly it's not a big deal for any AAA studio anymore.

In my opinion this game is a 5/10 at best. I can understand all those 0/10, as the fanbase is furious and wants to make a statement with those bomb reviews. But all those 10/10 critics scores are a joke and show in what state the gaming journalism really is.
If a linear stroy driven game with really weak story, good visuals, mediocre gameplay, combat that lacks variety get's a 10/10, then what score should RDR2, The Witcher 3, or Final Fantasy XIV get? I guess a 20/10.

10/10 should be acheived by groundbreaking titles only. That score is for games that have great graphics, amazing story, memorable characters, fun an challenging gameplay, spot on sound and deliver innovative features/concepts that nobody tried before. And sadly TLOU2 gives us only great graphics. Everything else is just mediocre at best.

Gameplay is very close to the first game but with slight improvements in some aspects. Most of the improvements can be felt when you play as Abby. She is like Joel but on steroid. Shooting, dodging, mele, she is like an unstoppable tank in this game. And I think I know why she plays very well, because Naughty Dog wants you to love this character. Why else would she be so powerful and with all the plot points to try to convince you to relate and feel empathy for her? But you see, this is exactly what's wrong with this game. Empathy for a character cannot be forced upon the players. It must be EARNED! Characters development need to feel natural. Plot points need to be logical. Choices should be given to the players to decide on what the outcome of the story. One word: Flashbacks? seriously Naught Dog? Master of story telling in Uncharted 4 and TLOU, decided to use a flashback to justify an important character action in this game. This is lazy story writing and simply cant be justifiable by just blaming all players homophobic. Now we all know fractions will be its standalone but nonetheless it is cut from the main game. So the $60 you pay for this game is gonna be less of a game compare to the first one. With the heavy weight on its shoulder, I am sorry TLOU2 simply isn't good enough. Also, it is just wrong to blame the players. Maybe you should try listening to their feedback instead of justifying for your own bad story writing. Please stop pushing agendas which is clouding your judgement and making good quality games. Be the naughty dog that everyone loves, instead of this emo, hate provoking teenager like Ellie in this game. You used to make master piece, Uncharted 4 remember? If you want the praise from everyone, you need to earn their trust again. There are some scenes which imo very unnecessary to be included such as the sex scenes and the execution scenes. They felt offensive and disrespectful to both the characters and the players. Take note on Ghost of Tsushima, they just announced a free multiplayer to their game... Expand

Some of the best areas naughty dog has ever created and some poor areas as well
Narrative has a myriad of issues, Pacing predominantly, Character's contrary motivations, bad dialogue at times (cringe), Unlikable boring propagandist and all characters in general are bland.
Best parts of the game are with Joel (Flashbacks) mostly prior to the bipolar retardation.
Abby was ok but Ellie was the worst character in the entire game. i had to force myself to finish the last 3-4 hours because the story is so unintelligent and unaware while attempting to be self aware to justify abysmal plot devices, convenience and contrived scenes leave the player wtaf is this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who enjoyed the first Last Of Us game I was really looking to playing this sequel and even went out of my way to avoid all the spoilers for it and after playing the game all the way through I can say that in terms of the graphics and the gameplay this game does well at that but the story of this is nowhere near as good as the first game. The moment Joel gets killed off by Abby that right there was enough for me to hate this character and nothing they could do was ever going to change my mind on her and playing as the character for 10 hours after that happened in a desperate bid to make people care for this character did not work on me at all there was nothing redeemable about this character or her friends that all ended getting killed which they deserved because of what they did in the first place and the ending left a sour taste in my mouth, they could have at least given the players the choice to decide if they should let Abby live or die but we never got that which in the end left Ellie with nothing at the end of it all.

So this is by no means a 10 out of 10 game the gameplay and graphics was the only good things about this sequel but the story to me was a huge letdown.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 2 is an ok game, which comes to be a disappointment given the expectations around it after the masterpiece the first game of the series was. The gameplay has hardly anything new compared to the first game and is stale, hardly rewarding and loaded with tension. The technical side is what shines, with fantastic graphics and music. The story is what disappoints the most. Unlike a lot of people, I actually liked Abby’s story plot (and levels, as they were gorgeous and interesting) but left disappointed as the game fails to properly explore the lore, specially of the scars, and drops a new faction towards the end without any introduction. At last, the gamer can see the ending coming miles away and it’s not satisfactory, and pretty much what one would expect. It gives the game no closure. If there is a Part 3, I do hope Naughty Dog moves from Ellie, Joel, and Abby to properly explore this world, while creating a story that people can connect to, like it was the first game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. to be honest when it comes to this game my feelings about it are all over the place, i both love and diss like the game in its entirety. i am a huge fan of naughty dog as a game studio and i loved both the last of us part 1 and the entire uncharted series.
I loved almost every aspect of the first half of the game, with my only criticism being that in my opinion they killed Joel a little to early. killing him as early as they did made the impact of his death not nearly as impactful as it could have been had they given us a few more hours with him. it was sad seeing a character that i loved so much die in the way he did. I don't have that much of a problem when it comes to the fact that it happened or how i happened, again it's more about when it happened. i wish i could have seen more of the relationship between Joel and Ellie in this game, so that Joel's death would have had a bigger impact and the reasoning/motivation for Ellie's journey through the game wold be greater.

other than what i just mentioned, i feel like the first half of the game was pretty great. it might be a little slow in the beginning, but i didn't really mind. even though Ellie isn't the same as we remembered her from the first game, i do fell like her transformation isn't too far fetched, and feels quite natural, considering what she's done and have been through. it was nice to see joel, even though it wasn't for long, it was nice to se him having changed for the better, having become a sweeter and more friendly/dad type of person.

when it comes to the story aspect of the game i think it is pretty great...in theory or as a concept. I see what naughty dog tried to do, when they made us play ass abby for the other half of the game. in concept i would say that it does sound interesting to play as "the villain" of the game to show the world your playing in, from other perspectives, also pushing the narrative of revenge (why Ellie/Abby seek revenge and what happens as a result of chasing it). to me it does sound compelling, its a good thought that potentially could work, but didn't really in this context. i found the theme of revenge in this game cool, but in the end it felt a little messy, considering the abby part of the game.

the abby part of the game completely derails from what we have been playing for the last 12 hours. we play as Ellie going on a quest for revenge, a quest that turns out to be very brutal, bloody and mentally tolling for ellie. when the the story reaches the big climax, abby shows up to face Ellie once and for all, the game decides to beat you down by taking you back to the beginning only now its from the perspective of abby. this really didn't feel good is also part of the reasons the abby part didn't really hit it home for me.

the abby part of the game had a lot of awesome gameplay and a lot of cool guns, something i do think was intentional, to try and make you like abby more without thinking. but ultimately it doesn't feel good to play as abby, it doesn't matter how much they tried to make me like her or how much they tried to explain her actions. to me she was always the person that killed Joel, something i couldn't jus shove under the rug and accept. for something like that to work she would have needed a lot more time to be established and developed as a character. i feel like that potion portion of the game lasted to long and wasn't really all that necessary, with a few changes to the story you could have shortend the game and thrown out the entire abby part, making room for a more impactful ending of the game. i feel that there are many ways to carry the same message, and show the same perspectives without having to play as abby. to me if you hadn't played as abby as much as you did, especially after she killed joel, the game would have been a lot better in my opinion.

i see what naughty dog was trying to do, and i respect the for trying something new even though it didn't really work this time. the games biggest upsides/strengths are its attention to detail, graphics and gameplay. it was a joy to play this game..for the most part, even though the story and ending did disappoint me quite a bit. i love naughty dog and still do, even though i am very saddened about the outcome of the game, its not a horrible game but it disappoints in one of the most important parts of the game, something that truly breaks mye heart.

i do feel that there is way to many people hating and focusing on the wrong aspects of the game, there is a lot i haven't mentioned and i didn't really go to much in depth.i feel like its important to be critical of a game, but don't be a di@k an review bomb the game, just because there were elements of it being disappointing/bad. the game doesn't deserve a one or a two, it deserves better than that its not a bad game, it just fails to fully do the first game justice as a sequel.

However the game is let down massively by uneven pacing, poor writing and mixed level design that really spoil what is on offer here.

The elephant in the room: It's no secret that this game had big boots to fill and this series in particular lives on it's story which is in a word quite terrible. The plot has several prominent convenient and immersion breaking plot holes and conveniences that fail to really give a valid reason for it's existence. The characters are poor and do not reflect the excellent character building from the last game and almost deliberately seek to tear them down in a way that is hollow and unfulfilling. Some new characters are good but on the whole most are shallow and not likeable with little core to them that would build the empathy the game attempts. This game can be fun but it is massively overshadowed by this due to it's heavy story focus. There is a bold decision halfway through that makes little sense in how it was excuted. This game would score significantly higher (7-8) if the story was given a directors cut that interspersed the stories with each-other at the same time.

Gameplay wise it's more refined and open but again suffers from poor pacing and some areas of really quite awful level design which appears to get worse as the title progressed. You can see at the beginning that they wanted to expand the scope but this is replaced later on by increasingly linear hallway type levels that don't expand the series in any meaningful way.

Combat too is refined, but is more of the same and is not really improved beyond some elements of stealth and does little to further the genre.

Sound is excellent, graphics are great. This on paper could have been a masterpiece but unfortunately it was executed poorly. It is not a bad game and it's not a masterpiece.

I would recommend renting this or waiting for it to go on sale. If you do not like depressing content or really enjoyed the first for it's story I would probably give this a miss entirely.

It's cobbled together like it was done by three different people and they never got to meet each other until the printing of the disc. It subverts expectation for the sake of it and the new main characters are weak as a B teir sci fi films background characters and while their at it have some of the worst and out of place dialouge in gaming as if written by an angsty teen girl for a school essay. It doesn't stop there, the pacing is destroyed by the games otherwise amazing design (in levels and comat areas) and to offset this they add character switching yet this makes it worse because when your switching from character to character to flash back to "main" game and that main game switches from open areas to long linear areas to a mix of both and back and forth you loose all investment and your time spent feels like it's getting the middle finger. Horrible choices in the way it's all constructed, just horrid. I could go on with how bad the this story is and how badly it foes a diservice to the girst game and the fans but it's been said about twenty five thousand times in these reviews in twenty five thousand different ways all with a red number but I'll say one morr thing, this game has thee worst pacing in both story and progreasion I think I've ever experienced in a game, that mid game progression break is just bonkers.

It's not all bad though, this game is near second to none in graphics on console or PC (barring RTX mods), a few stand up to it like RDR2 but that had a budget and dev team larger than God could provide. Ps4 Pro resolution is good only marred by a film grain effect that can be a bit jarring and HDR is well implemented. The Pro doesn't get too loud either, albiet a few moments in intense action does so.

Animations are by far unmatched even compared to RDR2 and it keeps it's game speed here without being sluggish or actions taking a day and on that note the actions are amazing, the fluid combat and human enemy encounters are some of the best in gaming, I can't get over how good they and how boring old third person stealth games have actually become fun games comat wise and not only that but brilliant. There is some frame pacing issues and the FPS is pretty weak even for 30, Ai on my TV settings smoothed it out but the frame pacing continued.

Gameplay moment to moment is pretty good (bar that awful pacing) but when you are looting and shooting and climbing and jumping it's a fun loop but again... pacing...horrid. Weapons and tools are fun and exploration is highly rewarding leading back into this which in turn makes the combat more fun, a masterwork in this regard but... pacing. The combat does vary from encounter to encounter and some are very bad while the human Ai does start to show it'a not all that great after a few encounters in.

Sound is incredible and it's got that amazing 3D audio design that needs to be in more games, a headset is highly recommended. Voice acting ranges from oscar worthy to B film to phoned in depending on the character or if it's a cutscene or character banter.

    7/10 over all.

5 for the story. 8 for the game if you ignore the story. I really wanna give it a 6 or 3 out of 5 stars but there is something about the quality here that helps it edge to a 7 yet I gave up caring about the story and tried my best to not question it after the half way point.

The pertinence of Ellie's sexuality in a zombie game about murdering monsters is questionable in the first place, but when the game starts right off the bat beating the LGBT drum and placing so much emphasis on it, it raises questions about the motive.

Joel is no longer the gruff, manly man he was in the first one. Naughty Dog has taken his balls,
he is now a meek, timid, and emotionally expressive man who desperately kowtows to Ellie. He went from badass savage to senescent grandpa competing for his chosen childs attention. In the opening exposition, he plays a soft guitar song, singing passionately, exposing his inner turmoil and feelings.

What the ****? I guess Joel has denounced his toxic masculinity. This is not the Joel fans have come to love. Joel in the first game was compelling explicitly because he was aloof and did not expose himself. As the ancient adage goes, SHOW dont tell. The first game showed us how Joel was tormented, non-verbally, through his actions. In Last of Us 2, he might as well stare at the camera and tell the audience directly; "I'm tortured, emotional and sad! Here, I've written a song about how much I need other people!"

The narrative of Last of Us 2 would fall into the "culture war" category. It is, first and foremost, trying
to change American culture by altering gender roles and perceptions of the human condition. I understand what they are trying to do. Men can expose feelings (often considered feminine) and women can kill and be tough (often considered masculine.) But these themes are woven into the story for woke purposes, in a contrived way rather than indirectly. There is no logical explanation for Joels sudden shift into sappy and emotional behavior.

He suddenly transforms with no explanation between the two games. I dont wan't devs trying to curate my worldview, I don't want devs trying to nudge me towards a woke ideology. I just want devs to write a compelling story, a good game, and leave identitarian politics OUT.

The game itself is superb quality. However, the narrative does a great disservice to fans. Woke/SJW themes aside, the drastic changes to Joel and throwing him under the bus by making Ellie the main protagonist is not something I'm happy with.

He's one of the franchise protagonist from the main game and went through well with a brilliant story and people were looking forward to see them back after 7 years, The story is a cohesive mess, such a shame story wise compared to the graphics which it does make it absolutely gorgeous to look at. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am torn about this game. Not because I don't know how to rate it myself, but based off the division I have read. I have trouble finding others that feel exactly how I feel on the details.

Graphics: 10/10 - I think most agree on this
    Sound: 10/10
Gameplay: 8/10 - I enjoy that combat is conservative so you don't get too tired of it. It did have some beautiful locations I enjoyed, but certainly wasn't perfect. But they did have a chance to give us more variation in enemies with the Scars that didn't really get fully utilized.
Story: 6/10 - This is where I find it difficult to find other people who feel the same on all the details. The killing off of characters doesn't affect me. Like A Song of Fire & Ice, I feel like it's up to the authors on who and how they kill off. The voice acting and dialog, like Uncharted 4, are some of the most natural feeling pieces that make me feel sorrow for modern day films. It also makes me cringe at huge games like Fallout 4 because of how good it is.

But the structure of the entire thing fails. I understand that many modern story writers have the urge to showcase both sides of a story, as throughout story history, it is relatively done quite rarely. But even with modern attempts, it obviously fails. A story is strong when it makes us feel for the motives of a character, so trying to showcase two sides always dilutes that. So then what is the purpose of trying to justify both sides of a conflict then? There might be good reasons, but LoU2 did not have a good one.

Almost everyone who played this sequel played the first game. So we all played as Joel as he decided to save Ellie from the Fireflies. He had a sudden fear for Ellie's life, and decided that killing everyone in the building was the only way to do it, and that completely jived with his character. It was a terrible situation, but we all excepted it and moved on. You still had a feeling of foreshadow that told us his reckoning was coming, so I also excepted his terrible death. And the way it was showcased did an excellent job at making you hate Abby.

Now there lies an incredible chasm of division with the fanbase. I don't hate the game because of how strong the female side was. I am completely unaffected by Ellie's love interest or how strong a character Abby was. But doing so well at making us hate Abby then making us play her a huge chunk of the game while trying to make us feel empathy for her completely fell flat because of it.

I also don't feel that much hate for making us play almost half of the game as another character. It kind of sucks, since you just wanted to finish out Ellie's story. The flash backs also fell kind of flat on there face because of how much present-time story you wanted to see through, but to me, that was just something the storywriters of LoU2 wanted to experiment with. As I said, it failed, but I feel like it had decent intentions. I also feel like the LoU Universe doesn't necessarily belong only to Joel & Ellie, so I wasn't against seeing other stories. Like Uncharted, I am sad to think about that Universe ending and would be happy if they continued it with other characters. But we saw Nate's arc end, so I am now ready to move on. So LoU2 should have finished Joel & Ellie's arc before moving on. Even me trying to imagine it, I could have excepted a parallel story during this game, but not as an antagonist that the game did so well to make you hate right off the bat.

Abby's story did a good job at making me care for Owen. You kind of felt bad for him, and he was enjoyable with his good humor and obvious desire to stop Abby from continuing the cycle of revenge that this game was obviously about. But he then does nothing to help stop it when you run into him as Ellie. So his and Mel's death was obviously his fault. Okay, not the direction I would have taken, but you then feel no empathy at having to kill them as Ellie. So why, then, make us play the second half of the game as Abby trying to make us feel shame for doing what we had to as Ellie? It's not like the game gave you a choice, which might of made me feel differently.

So overall, I don't feel hate for another game that obviously tied to offer nothing but strong female leads instead of just trying to balance it out. I do feel strongly that the game did so well with creating a fantastic antagonist right of the bat, but then just shifts gears and tries to make you feel empathy whilst sacrificing the opportunity to finish out the story of the characters you grew to love in the first game *and* the entire first half of the game. If they made you play Abby's side as the first half of the game, it might have even changed things. I probably still would have disagreed with it, but just that shift may have helped. If the creators properly feel these criticisms, I would feel better and would support the next games, but I am disappointed in their responses so far.

They forget that as a player at the wheel you should steer. Instead the story must go where it must go according to the directors and writers. This is a huge problem when your underlying message is violence begets more violence. You cannot condemn violence and talk about how bad it is while taking away player choice. As a result many of the plot points and climaxes fall flat on its ass.

The game's biggest gimmick is how perspective changes your point of view. So if this fails to impress you, the game does very little except that. The impact is a literal "all your eggs in one basket".
Speaking of climaxes, it's certainly a problem if you don't care for any of the characters. This point being subjective. Some will but I didn't. As a result I rather enjoyed playing as the infamous new character the game introduces.

Throughout we don't get a say in what characters do. No option to kill A or spare B. Things just runs on rails. I thought I was clever in thinking that I would spare as many humans as I could via stealth, only to learn that certain doors won't unlock until hostiles are cleared. Literally forcing me to commit murder even though I got past all the threats non lethal.

It's a stealth game. I dig it. I can appreciate that, but then you get RE:4 cabin sequences and it really doesn't make sense the rest of the game design considered. It's just frustrating and tedious. If you start a gunfight via poor judgment - then fair enough, but forced sequences don't work for this title.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't believe what the writers did ... very good intro but what follows the narration is very mediocre until falling into the bad,
To start Joel's death, a rather daring decision that, well executed, could have been good, but it is not the case. Joel, more than 20 years surviving, gets into a house with 15 guys that he knows nothing about? what sense does this make and what sense does abby who persecuted her father's murderer to kill him let the brother and daughter of the man he killed live? knowing that most likely they will go looking for him to kill her and her friends? Clearly a forced decision for what follows, killing one of the best characters in video games in a more than pathetic and meaningless way.
after this ellie another great character crosses the country massacring people, looking for abby so that at the end when she has her life in her hands she is stupidly enlightened and she realizes that killing and revenge is not the right thing, and letting go abby.

new characters: more than forgettable, I will only remember abby for killing joel and nothing else

narration: compared to 1 it is a complete rubbish, I hope for the sake of the first that they leave this up to here

gameplay: it is an evolution of the first, quite well

graphics: unfortunately it is the section that stands out the most in the game

To make it clear, the first is my favorite game and it **** me that this happened, I more than anyone wanted it to go well, finally I forgot some things such as filling some areas just to enlarge the hours played but well now I do not want to continue with this so, goodbye people and what a great disappointment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well here we go. To start? I am a huge fan of the first game (just personally a top favorite of mine) and this was much anticipated. Avoided the leaks and went in clear minded. With that said lets get into the nitty gritty. Spoilers will be discussed mostly in story and in the recap.

Gameplay-Really good when it picks up. The pacing really hurts the gameplay especially early on but when its rolling its not only tense its fun and incredibly addicting to play. While the jump button seems a bit forced and the dodge button seems mandatory for every single encounter? Its a bit of a downer but the gameplay makes up what is a lot of the rewarding aspects of this game.

Graphics- Naughty Dog needs to if they haven't already give those guys and gals working on the graphics a raise and attempt to retain them for life. These graphics are astounding, beautiful and just really give the game the feel it's trying to pull off. Moments when you play when the rain lets up? It's a gorgeous sight to see. When it's raining and the thunder hits? Amazing. Truly an accomplishment.

Accessibility Features- This is something that normally doesn't come up in games but the accessibility features while I didn't use much of them are great for gamers who need them. Its another thing you can tell Naughty Dog has focused on and they did an incredible job with it. A lot of kudos here for making sure tons of people can play the game no matter what life throws at them.

Story- So this is the last one and this is a bit long winded. The acting in this game? Is very impressive even with the poor dialogue at times and awkward moments. The story is a bit of a mess and I will leave out my disagreement for what decisions the studio made with the characters here for a moment. The flashbacks, time jumps and just the consistent going back and forth? It's messy and goes to another point. This game could have been probably cut by 25% and still told the story it was trying to accomplish. Abbys portion felt forced and her origins could have been revealed in an entirely different way. The story early on is very slow, Joel dies, you are forced to journey on and the game moves very slow at this point. The game by the time it really picks up with Ellie? You switch to Abby with your entire skill tree reset now to zero. The game also focuses a lot on what the cost of revenge is and what it can drive a normally good person to do. It attempts to switch the player to instead of feeling like you need to get revenge for Joel switches and tells you what Ellie was doing is wrong and she must be punished. As a player of the original which most people are who played this game? They aren't gonna feel that nor did I and that plays into my score for this game. This story could and should have been executed differently. The plot outline of this game makes a ton of sense the overall delivery is messy and does not always land. When it does land its a nice subtle tone and it is done really well. Those times it does land is not often enough.

Overall? This game is a bit of a disappointment as its really a cinematic game that focuses on the story pushing you through. The gameplay, graphics, soundtrack, acting is all done incredibly and should be really focused on here and applauded. The story is really unfortunately a mess and it impacts the overall experience of this game and Abby is really forced upon the player to be humanized and liked and it never hits home.

    Pros
    -Graphics
-Most of the gameplay after the first four hours
    -Acting
    -Accessibility features

    Cons
    -Disorganized and poor plot
-Forced characters that feel more like a sub-quest and not really apart of the game
-Longer than should be swan song to the original characters
-There is a lot of bugs in this game that need to be ironed out.

Im not giving this game a 0 nor am I giving it a 10. This game is not a 10. If I could? It would be a 6 on my pure disappointment but this is a 7. The game is good, its playable its just not what anyone was anticipating and was not worth the hype.

I am not a bot. I have completed the game and I will be replaying it. If I feel different I will update the score.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am going to go through all aspects of the game, and give my honest opinions on the game as a whole.

Graphics: stunning, beautiful, the water, the grass everything was just gorgeous. The game will look phenomenal on the ps5.

Combat: their were a lot of moments where I felt the tension, where I died and had to approach the situation differently. Abby and Ellie are two different play types, Ellie is more ranged and stealth, while Abby is much more offensive and melee. They were different enough to create a bit of variety in the game-play. My biggest complaint is the enemy types. You have all the zombies from the first game, Clickers, Runners, Bloaters, and Stalkers. There is a new one called the Shambler that is a mix of bloater and runner. The only other enemies are people and dogs. There was not enough types to make the game feel different, it was more running into the same thing after about a couple hours.

Abby: The character that has received a lot of controversy. First thing, she is not trans, that was misleading on the leaker's part. The game explains her physique by saying she trained a lot, which too me is skeptical cause we are in an apocalypse. We don't have the resources for that kind of stuff. She is introduced poorly, she is brought in as the villain of the game, so for about 15-18 hours I saw her as the villain. She did kill Joel, brutally, and it ruined my first impression of the character. As I played her my opinion only changed slightly, but that was due to interactions with Yara and Lev. All her friends didn't make me think she was a good, kind, caring person, since in the end her friends are killers too. Lev and Yara brought a better side to her, but it was more like 'oh she fells guilt' but by the time you actually get to this you begin to get tired of her. I think she should have had her own game, not be shoved in as a replacement for Ellie and Joel. You could play the game, not play Abby's, part and nothing would change.

Ellie: Who cares if she gay, its Ellie, she can be as gay as she wants. Ellie felt over dramatized to me, like she would not admit or talk about things that would bother her, and it was frustrating. True, she did go through a lot and is now on a revenge quest. But Ellie just felt disconnected from the other characters at times. Yes her and Dina were cute, but only for an hour before the revenge took Ellie and made her distant from Dina. And for some odd reason when Ellie killed some characters she acted like she has never done that before, like it was her first time. Trust me it wasn't. I get the PTSD of Joel's death, but it felt like Ellie would at times be fine with being a badass, but then would feel instant regret. It wasn't until the ending did I feel she actually got anywhere as a character. Yes she did let Abby go, which meant she was trying to let her revenge go. I enjoyed Ellie more in the flashbacks between her and Joel then i did in the main game. Her killing of Mel was extreme, but what would have made it work more was if for a moment she saw Dina, that would warrant the reaction she had. Overall she felt like a forced drama point, and you didn't even get to play her for the whole game so you couldn't watch her arc from beginning to end.

Side characters: Jesse was cool and loved having him (then they killed him), Dina wasn't bad but got better as the game went on, Owen was also interesting (till they for some reason forced a **** scene between him and Abby, what are we 12?), Mel was sweet and I could understand her (till they killed her) , Manny was hilarious and they killed him, Nora was like a protective friend (also dead), Yara was an amazing big sister (also dead), and Lev was just a character I wished we could have explored more. Btw Lev is the true trans and let him live out his life as he pleases. I would love to have a spin off about Lev and what he goes through.

Story: I get the 'revenge is a horrible cycle thing' but the game is forcing you to feel bad for characters. You play as Ellie, killing these people that are actively trying to kill you, and everything is fine. Your enjoying the game. Then you play as Abby, and the game proceeds to show the people you killed, and how good they are, how sweet the dogs are, how they aren't so bad. The game wants you to feel bad. But frankly, I didn't care, because as a player they are the 'villains'. As for the ending, I get it, but I don't feel anything worthwhile out of it. I don't feel shocked, moved, stunned, or sad. I pretty much said "OK, was that it?" The story isn't some interwoven psychological brain teezer. This game is a sequel, but its not the best sequel. I get that characters die in such a harsh world, but to start the player off with that just ruins the players experience, it takes the action away from them and forced them to be a bystander while they watch characters drop like flies. If you like the game, good for you, I wouldn't recommend it without some caution.

Original Last of Us is still the best and the best Naughty Dog game. It is a damn shame this game turned out the way it did. Biggest disappointment of 2020 games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLOU2 in short - the story should be 15h instead of 30h.
They spend time on worthless characters in the story. Three time lines create feeling that we as players do not progress in the story at all. Annoyingly reuse locations for 2-3 times. No depth in Rattlers/Slavers and Scars/Cultists.
Joel should be finished in the middle of the game and till that no info for players who is Abby so we get the surprise moment. 2nd half chase Abby. Ellie and Abby must be available already in the first half of the game. Dumb decisions. Poor writing.
Naughty Dog choose the easiest way. Give such a beloved franchise/characters to a writer who worked on a few episodes in Westworld show and thats it. Seriously. Couldnt find a more professional writer?!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ellie in TLOU1 was probably the most likeable character I'd ever seen in a game. To say she was charming feels like an understatement. The very next story about her that the devs want to tell me has me being trained and conditioned to dislike her for 15 hours. THEN they make me play as unlikeable Joel-Killer for another 15 hours. And at the end of it all they expect waterworks from me when she can't play the guitar bc of her stupid failed revenge mission. And all that on top of a messy story with a lot of cringey moments and barely any Joel. And every time Joel was there it only served to bum me out. When the first game ended I remember it being a "wow what a cool experience" moment. Didn't get that at all from this one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Last of us 2 Review:
I needed around 24 hours for a normal playthrough with 184 collectables found. This game is something special, positive and negative. Positives first: Big step up in gameplay in comparison to the first game, amazing sound design and soundtrack, amazing level design(the places feel like real places and not combat areas), the groundbreaking animations and the amazing acting, especially by Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson and Laura Bailey. These aspects are better than Tlou in every scene and level. They set new industrial standards. Negative aspects:
The difference between story/theme and gameplay. The moral of the story is that revenge is bad and the killing of innocent people isn't worth it, but the gameplay has a different opinion about it, it forces you to kill a lot of enemies in the most brutal way, if you want or not. You can't progress without killing at least 80% of all enemies in a area. I only finished one level without killing everyone, and I tried to save as many lifes as possible. It's a contradiction between story and gameplay in a way i have never seen it, it destroys the theme of the game. The handling of a lot of characters is also disappointing because 1. they have no character development and 2. they behave like different people. Part 1 and part 2 has the same characters but they have different personalities. You play half the game as a different character than Ellie and these segments are strange. You play them after playing them with Ellie but earlier in the timeline. These level are too long, specially because you start from the beginning where you have to work yourself back to the climax. The three in game days are interesting but the story is stretched and feels like they want to hold you back. If you don't like the character you are playing these segments feel really long (I almost quit the game for that reason, it felt like work to progress and not like fun). If the chapters where like Seattle day 1, day 1, day 2, day 2, day 3 and day 3 it would feel better to play because you work with both characters on the climax and not like one finished her arc and the other starts hers after that.
    Verdict:
The last of us part 2 is an amazing game in terms of animation, Gameplay, acting and sound design but the story stops the game from being a masterpiece like its predecessor. If i would include the horrible working conditions and leak handling, the game would rank lower. What has been achieved, a higher technical bar in the industry was paid by the health of the worker at naughty dog. Was it worth it?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Game was not totally awful, the world was beautiful and the gameplay mostly kept you on your toes. The story was the largest disappointment of the game. Killing Joel in the first hour, playing as his killer who we have grown to hate while the game tries to make us sympathize with her as we play as her character for an extended portion of the game. The worst part was that Abby’s story turned out to be way more captivating than Ellie’s. There were more interesting characters who actually grew from their experiences before they were ultimately killed (kind of disappointing but not unexpected). The ending was the worst for me ultimately reaching Ellie’s climax and then deciding not to go through with killing Abby. What was this whole story for? Had she forgot about all the people who died or her family who she left behind. That was truly disappointing to watch. However, I realize story is not all that makes a game. As I said before I enjoyed the gameplay and having to outwit or outgun my enemies in certain areas while scavenging for materials or ammunition. I also enjoyed all the notes you could read to immerse yourself into the world. Overall, I was disappointed. It was not a bad game but it was certainly not the 10/10 game that all the critics had rated it. (The only spoiler I knew ahead of time was the Joel would die). Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Technical aspects: 8/10
The game play is solid, but this is no action game, some people may find it slow and boring. It is basically the first game but a little bit more polished. The biggest improvements here are graphics (obviously) and level design. I liked that the enemy executions are varied (wish God of War had this many different executions).

    Story/writing: 2/10
Too much plot induced stupidity, characters that were viewed as ruthless, intelligent and resourceful, commit mistakes and make ridiculous decisions just for plot advancing or to make the point the writers intended.

Most characters are bland. All the new ones to be honest. Their gender and sexual preferences end being useless traits and are there just because.

The story is dark and gritty just for the sake of it.

The moral aspect of the story is shallow. Another revenge story that ends with "maybe violence is bad"?

As they tried to shock the players and subvert expectations, they ended cutting Joel's screen time on the game, and since the main aspect of the story is Ellie and Joel relationship, the game became empty. They only interact meaningfully enough by flashbacks.

    Overall: 5/10
Play this if you liked the game play and mechanics of the first game and want to experience some of the best graphics of the generation. Story-wise, as the continuation of the original, this game is bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am putting a 7 and that's a favour so i will not go more down. I respect the hard work they put in this game however putting a hard work into something doesnt necessarily mean its gonna be good.
The game is absolutely amazing in terms of acting graphics gameplay rich environment that doesnt let you to get bored of it and also the dismemberment! Woo boy that was cool and satisfying but the story is something that bothered me.
I played the game very cautiously and NO it's not about how Joel died, its not about Abby playing half the game with her its about HOW joel dies and it's not because of the golf club it's about (YO I AM TOMMY THIS IS JOEL) to a stranger they know **** about and followed like sheeps. Before you say to me the excuse Neil Druckmann said about the 4 years of Joel's been soft and love changed him... No man,20 years of killing and interacting with ****ty people 4 years of softness cannot erase this brutality! It just cant.Maybe in the world of Neil but I didnt like it simple as that.
Basically Joel did ****ty things to survive with Tommy as well and we more clearly see it in Tlou 2 with Tommy.Next is about Abby, I give 0 Fs about her backstory and how to play a mini game with a bow so at the end Owen will show me his Christmas surprise. I dont also give a damn about the flash backs with owen and Abby been younger and exploring the aquarium. If you want to make her sympathetic try harder because that wasnt the way and made the game boring in this. And of course I'm against the sexual scene with Owen, it was unnecessary and it's a god damn game, not a porn

Now about something people probably will get mad about. Homosexuality....BRUH LIKE WTF
we know they are people we know they have rights we know they can do whatever they want in their lives but promoting it so much in this game made me puke! Book stores with full of homosexual books, Gay flags on the road and the WORST AND FOR MOST Lev/Lilly is a transexual!!! You play50%of abbys story protecting a women who became a guy and the reason you protecting her/him is because his Cult is against it! Why THIS SHOULD BE THE REASON OF THE CHASE ???why they didnt chase her cause she did something really bad to her cult disrespecting them! Dont tell me "this is the reason"Oh yeah by the way I am not homophobic , I appreciate and respect all opinions people have and they can choose their way of belief and also I have gay people as friends and I have 0 problem with them .Putting it in a game like this and promoting it like theres no tomorrow...... that's a big nono for me and it shows a huge amount of insecurity for the person who wanted so much to put this stuff inside!.It feels like Neil Druckmann says to me "Become gay you have to" and I felt uncomfortable as it's against my beliefs and this is why we dont put things like that in a game. Escape reality play games they say. And for the finale is the ending. I had no problem Ellie not killing Abby but the whole thing I forgive you etc.. Revenge is bad is a bit cliche but it was cool, all I am saying is that they could have done it better. Seen Joel at the end with Ellie 1 day before he dies was amazing and how it got connected.Thats MY opinion which i dont wait everyone to agree with but hey this is why theres a comment section and rating from your own perspective! All opinions are respected just remember....The truth is different for everyone but the objective truth is common for anybody.
    Peace!

In the first game you are running around as you try to flee for help which is a great introduction and then after that you go into this huge fight. But in the last of us part 2 the first 2 hours is just all story and barely any action. There was some really cool scenes and Joel making a dad joke made me smile so much, but besides that it was just eh... This game is just okay it’s not as bad as everyone is saying it is just mediocre. A huge wasted opportunity and a huge disappointment especially since it was from naughty dog. (Spoiler) also they killed ****ing Joel. When that happened it was like my heart was split into two. He meant so much to me and was such a good character. But they just decided to kill him off for the sake of a plot... If they wanted to kill someone off maybe make it Dina or Tommy. That would’ve been way better than killing Joel. I would’ve loved to see Joel and Ellie team up again and travel around searching for the killer of Dina and Tommy. I just have no interest of doing it with Dina and Ellie. One of my favorite parts of the last of us was the amazing father and daughter relationship between Ellie and Joel. But in conclusion this game is just okay it’s kinda fun but I ****ing hate naughty dog for killing Joel. The story isn't as dwelling as the original game, it felt more forced. Killing the main character Joel in this way - pretty cheap - after playing as Abby felt wrong. Growing with the original two characters from the first game, then having forced a nobody (Abby) to play as, didn't fit at all. Apart from those choices, the game is incredible with smooth gameplay and environmental design in both world, OST and graphics. Also, have we all forgotten Ellie was lesbian since Left Behind DLC? This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 7 years of waiting. And now such disappointments.
Excellent technical solutions. The game uses all the resources of the PS4 to the full. The graphics are almost perfect. If you don't look closely. Cyclical movement of grass, cyclical ripples. But still, the PS4 imposes a restriction, so this is excusable.
The gameplay remains the same, new mechanics make it more exciting, but it is still the same as in the first part. The gameplay was not the most important in this game, but the main story and characters. That's where the problems start.
The whole message of the game is so superficial, so petty, that it does not cause emotions, sympathy or empathy for these single-celled heroes. In the first game, you empathize with Joel and Ellie. They develop, find common ground, become close. In the second part, this completely disappears. Their experiences just start to irritate with their idiocy. The only thing that causes emotion is Joel's stupid death. Then the meaning is simply lost in these petty experiences, faceless and flat characters. The end of the game... I should have tried to think of something dumber. It is clear that any killer has feelings, life... So let's forgive EVERYONE now. What kind of limited morality?!
I don't understand why there are so many AI dithyrambs? He's terribly stupid. Locations where there are hostile people, pass sitting in one corner, killing one, the rest resort to it. And you take turns shooting them in the head. Very interesting, that's sarcasm. It's cool of course that they react with screams to the death of their partners, but it doesn't touch. Since after 2 seconds, the one who is grieving also dies from a shot in the head.
If the plot was interesting, it could be forgiven... But the game has outdated gameplay and no interesting story. This is not what we expected. Perhaps if you do not pass for 3 days before the release of the second part of the first, it is not so striking, but this is a weak excuse for the game that was waiting for 7 years. Complete disappointment.
I think the game is adequate to the assessment of 6/10. This is very sad as was expecting a masterpiece and got podelco.

But the Storytelling decisions and pacing is so average at best compared to the excellent (best aspect) of the Last of Us. It's not that the treatment of Joel is handled awful (we know he was gonna be Ellie's snap factor) it's just that it is handled so poorly and the lead up is so "forced" that you wonder if they just wanted to get rid of the character instead of giving it a proper send off. And them they also "forced us" to sympathize to the new Antagonist/Second Protagonist Abby. I feel bad for Laura Bailey, she did a good voice/motion capture performance, it's just the character is so poorly written that her motivations and behaviour for being so antagonistic are never explored beyond the generic "oh boo boo, you killed my father and i'll yours" revenge trope. Disapointing ending too. I for one, was glad that Ellie proved to be the better person. But after the excrutiating journey she embarks to get her. She din't even cut her fingers at least Expand

Okay this game has gotten too much hate, the story is disappointing in the beginning but the end message puts it all together, I can understand why some people wouldn’t like this game but many things have been improved, the combat is much better than the first game with the new added dodge button and the graphics are possibly one of the best I’ve seen on ps4. The story does feel like a fan fiction at some points and some of the character deaths are so sudden that you don’t even care about them or remember, I wish they realize why we loved the first game and why this is a bit of a disappointment compared the to first one I still think it’s worth every penny just for the gameplay. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After finishing the game last night after 25 or so hours , my conclusion is that the world of the last of us created in this game is second to none, the graphics and visuals are most likely the best we will see in this console generation and the developers should at least pride themselves for knowing that, on their side, they created a game that improves on part one in every single way.... but then there’s the story. I knew about some of the leaks coming into the game, but I was determined to beleive that a full games worth of context would let me gauge my own opinion and hope it would be a positive one... but I’m sad to say that I beleive our beloved characters were sacrificed, to enforce the themes of hate and revenge and how it ultimately will lead to your own demise, forcing the characters to make severely uncharacteristic throughout, so it can find it’s way to force this message down your throat. I feel like their were elements of the story, mostly the flashbacks, that were genuinely beautiful to watch, so I can’t help but think that they had the ingredients to make a serviceable part two, but instead chose to further clamp down on its heavy message, sacrificing characters logic from the first game and force you to watch all of your favourite characters steadily decline to the point where there is nothing left, and by the games credits, I felt numb knowing that Ellie ultimately leaves with nothing... even her memory of Joel and the legacy she could have carries on, while also knowing that the antagonist gets to sail away with a renewed sense of hope and purpose in finding her community again. In a way I feel attacked for loving these characters, and it’s like I’m being punished for it. In conclusion, if your favourite part about this franchise is Joel and Ellie, then although this game is incredibly beautiful with a moody, second to none atmosphere.... you will end up with your heart broken knowing where their Stories end up ... and mislead by the fact that you play as the antagonist for literally half the game. I think I’m going to take the good parts of this game and theorise my own ending that the characters actually deserve to have. Expand

There are great moments and sequences here and there, but that's just not enough for a game in which the story is the main draw. Dialogue often feels unnatural and characters seem to make decisions for the benefit of the plot and not what makes sense for the characters themselves, rare problems in the previous game. The game frequently attempts to make the player feel guilty for actions they are forced by the game to perform, which can be done well, but it often comes off as too obvious and manipulative which causes the player to feel frustrated and disengaged instead of emotional. There is some fun to be had and a few of the characters are genuinely interesting, but overall, the incredible efforts put into this game on a technical level feel largely wasted. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, that was something. Not everyone's cup of tea, some bits were really good, and some bits were really bad. First of all, the art was insane, the detail, storytelling and world building is second to none. Character animations are excellent, with amazing acting and cut scenes.

Music and audio overall was unreal. Extremely immersive and created a beautiful atmosphere. The level design was what you'd expect from a Naughty Dog title at the moment, diverse and sometimes fun. The added dimension of crawling and climbing was implemented well, however I didn't enjoy the invisible borders to the levels, I think this is a cheap level design move and ruins the immerssion. The gameplay was okay, it hadn't really evolved into anything more than what it was before, some of the cover and shooting was a bit clunky and unfortunately didn't feel well thought out at times. Killing gets very repetitive and becomes an unrewarding experience to borderline grindy and monotonous. I'd have quite enjoyed setting traps, problem solving ways of getting out of rooms, better designed stealth missions and just simply exploring some interesting areas. Considering in Uncharted we can climb so much stuff, I was very surprised this wasn't something added.

The story, well, I don't really know what to say... For me, it was just a mess. Killing one of the most beloved characters in gaming history, seems like a very nasty way to destroy all the love and respect built from the first title, and to do it for shock is for all the wrong reasons. I'd dare say it's borderline selfish.

Secondly, taking away player agency and forcing them down a bottleneck to play the very character who murdered Joel in an attempt to provoke emotion, again, feels very self righteous, and the manipulation tactic designed to make the player enjoy this person seems disingenuous. Personally at this point you're making the game for yourselves and your ego, instead of the millions of players who have supported both your studio, and your productions for years and even decades. They even had the audacity to advertise otherwise. Its like you knew people wouldn't like it, and yet you did it anyway.

I also can't get over the amount of flashbacks, it was tiresome. The mechanic makes everything chaotic.

Additionally the new characters served no purpose narratively and were just bland. I couldn't care for a single one. With no development of them, it was just vanilla, and when they died, I mostly didn't care. The only character I liked was Lev. He was probably my favourite and the most interesting/well built.

By the end, I'd given up and just wanted to see the ending, but I really didn't care. I was exhausted from forcing myself to try and enjoy it. The magic that existed in the previous title was missing. The whole concept of story driven narrative was lost like the final season of GoT - this game ultimately forgot what it was supposed to be.

For me, I'd have enjoyed playing as Ellie and Joel at the start, feeling that magic between them both and reminiscing on the good times we had, pure nostalgia. The first part of the game could be Ellie working with Joel, Tommy, Jesse and Dina, doing missions to support Jackson, exploring the world, levelling up, crafting cool stuff and enjoying awesome encounters, saving survivors, clearing out clickers, just a nice introduction to the characters, their stories, the world and the mechanics. Then, Ellie and Joel on a great adventure. You then split off for whatever reason and now you're alone exploring a new area, maybe the scars or another group. You could save Joel and abby, work together to escape, and go back to Jackson or the wolf camp, she's a friend of yours but she could even become the love interest instead of Dina - this makes later situations harder to deal with.

At this point abby figures out who joel is, stuff could happen and he dies in Epic fashion that tears at Ellie. The revenge plot begins.

You team up with Tommy, Dina and Jesse who then work with you to find abby and kill her. This group gameplay brings a whole new dynamic. You could even direct them to do things, reward the player with cool functionality.

Later you meet Lev. This is the perfect time to drop ideas into your head about forgiveness. You build a relationship, working forward and surviving (the key mechanic is survival, problem solving ways out of impossible to exit rooms with puzzles, camping in abandoned areas and setting traps for clickers etc).

Eventually you find abby, fight, and you get this forgiveness narrative in the end. Perhaps Lev gets involved and begs you both to stop.

For me, executed properly, this sort of narrative would've been a much more rewarding experience. It can provoke conflicting emotions, happiness, mourning, anger, forgiveness, all of it and ultimately be an enjoyable game without upsetting the player and forcing them down a journey kicking and screaming.

Simultaneously the most well-made, big budget game and the worst video game sequel ever.

    Pros:

    - This is one of the most visually impressive games I've ever played. Near photo realistic at times and character animations (except picking up loot!) are exceptional

    - The gameplay has improved from the first, with larger word design, greater arsenal of weapons, character moves and smarter enemy AI, enabling to play how you want and move dynamically between action and stealth

    - Excellent sound design. Playing this game with headphones made enemy encounters tense and the sounds from the infected horrific

    - The performances in this game are top notch, taking motion capture to a whole new level. even the slightest movements, glances and unique character mannerisms are picked up in these great performances

    Cons:

    - In an attempt to expand the world of the Last of Us and make a bigger story that "subverts" expectations, the story is significantly dumber than the first game. Characters behave uncharacteristically, and some scenes have characters suddenly having a change of heart, as if they are bipolar. And this is not just with the main characters but even with the supporting cast. Also the overall theme of the "circle of violence and revenge" is highly unsubtle and bordering on the level of pretentiousness. This emotional weight of this theme is nullified by the game's brutal gameplay, which is more visceral and also includes dogs as enemies. While Part 1 also had the player commit violent acts against many foes, it was a story a familiar bond between characters, protecting one another and hoping to reach the Fireflies and potentially creating a vaccine that could save humanity. The game was about surviving a brutal world, where nobody is truly free of sin, but the net positive of potentially saving humanity outweighed the negatives of killing so many. But this game makes you hoardes of people for and tries to make you feel bad when certain characters are killed in cutscenes. There was no emotional weight to these moments, with one particular death making me laugh at loud at how the game tried to emotionally blackmail you for killing, when hours prior you were already conditioned to the same act to others.

The game's pacing is all over the place, often killing any momentum that had been built. There are even flashbacks within flashbacks, which could have easily been avoided had certain scenes and gameplay sections were reordered in a more linear fashion. The game failed to create any emotional attachment to the second protagonist, due to poor placing of their gameplay sections and the stupid decision to remove any character/weapon upgrades. I know that this is a new character but you could have at least given the player resources from the get-go so the player could immediately purchase some upgrades or have some skills pre-unlocked. This decision made it feel like playing a game for 10 hours only to have your save corrupt and having to start the game again, highly demoralising.

The game is also far too long, especially the 2nd characters sections. There are even some story beats that do not go anywhere and feel like needless padding. Finally, while I didn't like the way the intro played out, although I understand the reason but felt the execution was poor, the ending is absolutely abysmal, and goes against the main theme the story kept hitting you over the head with. They could've followed through with their theme to its logical conclusion or at least given the player the choice in the final confrontation, which would have had a far stronger emotional weight. But in the end the game ends on a whimper than leaves you feeling empty, and questioning why you even played it to begin with.

I don't normally hold game stories as high as books or movies, due to the gameplay from most AAA breaking any sense of emersion the story was supposed to tell. But as someone who thought the Last of Us 1 was a major step in the right direction of video game story telling, setting a new bar in the medium, I'm obviously going to extra critical to the story of the sequel. Overall I was disappointed in that regard. I respect the decision to go back to these characters, this world and tell a darker story, I even respect that they made such a bold choice in the beginning. But the execution was so poor, with terrible pacing and an underlying theme that contantly and unsubtlely beats you over the head in a pretentious manner, and an ending that is just the wettest fart in the wind.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion a very good game but i didn't like it and i didn't enjoy it at all. The choices that characters took (been written by the directors and writers) seems that doesn't fit with the story and the choices that made in the previous game . Neil and Naughty Dog wrote the story around Joel's death . So they had to kill Joel , but in the game this fact is poorly executed (not cinematography related but storytelling related) . Joel and Tommy decided to trust a complete group of strangers , invited them in their town , gave up their names with no second thoughts . This choice is against the laws of Joel and Tommy as we all know they did terrible things to survive and we see Joel in the first game teaching Ellie about not trusting easily other people in the world of LOUS . So i think that one of the first discussions they had the writers of ND were related about Joel's death . The fact that they choose to break the laws of the characters morals in order to tell another story seems completely off . When you let your characters with their choices develop the story , well , the story actually works feels organic and alive . But when you decide to develop the story around a fact that happens against the character's beliefs ( Joel's and Tommy's mistake to trust a group of strangers) , well, that doesn't tell a story but it puts the characters as puppets and binds them un-physically in a line of storytelling that the writer choose for them (without taking into consideration their personal choices) . All the above , applies to Ellie or Jesse or even Abby as characters . I liked the world , the vision , the cinematic gameplay , the sound , the details , the hard work of people in ND , I even liked the time-line they choose to tell the story ( you see the bed that they cut Yara's hand as Ellie and you don't know what has happened and then you learn as Abby what happened ) . I didn't like the characters and the storytelling at all . Expand

Both sides are willingly ignoring what it does well and what it lacks. Graphics are great, gameplay serves its purpose. Story is interesting and really unexpected ... BUT when the credits starts rolling any enjoyment you could have taken from gameplay is overshadowed by an immense frustration built up from the very beginning of the game.

    TL;DR:

    - Visuals : 8/10 | Somehow i feel like the models are kinda on the ugly side. Even Dina and Ellie are not really attractive imo [Don't even get me started with Abby] , but otherwise, the rest is a treat to the eyes.

    - Gameplay : 7/10 | I'm more of an RPG player (Divinity, Dragon Age, JRPGS and such) so i guess i'm not the best qualified to judge this criteria. However, the gameplay is simple and effective enough to keep going without too much of a fuss.

    - Story: 4/10 | That's the core issue with the game. TL;DR: The choices made by the writers are bold to say the least. I honestly think the idea was interesting and would have made a great twist... if It was handled correctly, which was not the case here imo.

    > Extended opinion concerning the story: On paper, the themes and goal of the writers were to show how destructive hate and revenge can be; and by the end of the game this goal is achieved, sure. The core of the matter lies in how the main characters are treated throughout the game. Most of the players have built an attachement to Joel and Ellie and they are utterly destroyed in this sequel.

I believe that Abby and Joel share a lot in common: they both are merciless and cold killers coming from a great loss in their past. What makes them interesting is that they do not hide it and admit that they are not saints. They both even go through a redemption arc during their development. But the results are very different because of the writing.

Joel's arc works because he is shown as a human first and foremost, he turns from a cold and bitter old a**hole to a caring and loving father. And when he single handedly kills dozens of other survivors working to save humankind for a selfish reason at the end of TLOU you understand why. Understanding is not condoning though, and most players knows that he is a selfish prick for doing that, but still, they know how important Ellie is for him because you've seen everything they've shared and how Joel has grown since the beginning of the game.

Abby follows the same path... upside down. She is shown as a monster first and then the game tries to humanize her. But it doesn't work because the player is already so lost in frustration and anger that anything the game tries to soothe things up is blown away by what she did. And this is a stupid mistake made by professional writers... or it's intentional. In which case they are purposely ignoring basic rules of story telling.

Ellie is the biggest loser in TLOU2. Her character is shallow, always pondering everything - which is understandable and human - but doesn't sit well with the overall story. You see her taking harsh decisions, always going forward because the story needs it... and still, she's constantly questioning her own beliefs. Again, it makes her very human, but is a disservice the story as it breaks the rythm of the game. Moreover, her decisions are very questionable especially when after suffering a defeat and realizing everything she could have wanted otherwise, she gambles her peace for the sake of an old grudge... Which leads to an underwhelming rage when the player realizes at the end of the game that everything might have been in vain after all.

And this is frustrating. You poured hours upon hours upon one goal, watching a beloved character forsake herself and her dreams for it ... and all that for naught. Ellie didn't deserved this, she is a killer, sure. But so is everyone else in this universe, and unlike others, the player is emotionnally attached with Ellie which is why we feel her pain as our own.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us - is best console game ever!
The Last Of Us Part II - Story writers shouldn't be allowed to work anymore. It's not problem that Ellie is gay, no, we knew that since The Last Of Us: Left Behind. Death of Joel? Well that really sucked and after that happened i wasn't feeling good, i couldn't believe it but i thought that if they decided to kill him, that they got awesome story behind it! So his death isn't reason for bad rating, no.. The reason for bad rating is that i'm forced to play Abby (who i hate!) for half a game! Is Joel killed so we can play ~12 hours character that is 'Built like Ox'? We don't care about her personality, we don't care for story, we care for Joel, we care for Ellie, we care for Tommy, we care for character from The Last Of Us! You ruined everything by introducing new character that killed Joel, you ruined our pleasure by forcing us to play Abby for half a game, you ruined everything by letting Abby go at the end. What does that mean? That Joel died for nothing? Jessie as well? I finished game for 23h 34m (Survivor if someone's interested) and for what i played it almost 24h? For which goal? Why we went thru Seattle for 3 days? What was the point of a game? I don't get it. Why didn't Ellie stayed in Jackson after Joel's death? You could have ended game then, ~2 hours after start and it would still be better ending (and game) then this..

My rating was 6/10, probably because i'm rating Ellie's half of the game with 10/10, but i was convinced that Part II will be equally as good as Part I or even better..

The only thing you can do right now is to start creating Part III ASAP and to try to fix this mess by killing Abby as soon as possible by Tommy's hand (because it wouldn't make much sense to make Ellie do it since you lost that opportunity). And to create awesome story with Joel in it (he can appear in it as memories, to give us new moments of Ellie and joel that happened between Hospital and Jackson, or maybe he can be only in Ellie's head, to appear from time to time..)

I think that we fans didn't deserve this.. As you can see no one likes Abby (even tho u tried really hard to make us at least understand her by forcing us to play her and to understand her.. By showing us her's 'good heart' because of her need to help Lev and his sister.. But even that didn't help. We don't want her in Part III, we want her dead!

Hopefully this comment will somehow reach next story writters..

Please try to fix this mess, it's not too late.. Part III is your only chance if you ask me.

    Regards,
    Nikola

I could've done without 10 to 12 hours. Found myself a little bored at times. Spoiler Alert... I was hoping to play with Joel more but the game minimizes that to another level. I didn't like that especially since the trailer Clearly shows him showing up and saying he wouldn't let Ellie got through it alone. Boom! I'm thinking another adventure with Joel and Ellie but this time Ellie is the main character. Joel plays back up but nope. They lied and misled everyone. Wow, just wow! The game just goes down from here on. The story is lazy and contrived. I like the concepts that they were bringing out but maybe for Last of us 3 or 4. I feel like the game could have been more palatable if they changed the sequence in the way the scenes were placed. Instead we a multi-flashback mess. I love Naughty Dog, but i dont know what the hell this game was. The end wasn't satisfying as was the overall game. Expand

I avoided all spoilers for the sequel and went in trusting the team at naughty dog to deliver an outstanding experience once more with this new entry. I could not believe how badly the team approached this project, given the amount of time it was in production. Here are the main issues I have with this game. 1. Joel’s death early in the game was a huge shock and the set up was completely out of character for both him and Tommy. 2. The writing and dialogue between characters is of a much lower standard compared to the first game. 3. The new character Abby who you’re forced to play as, after killing Joel is a real low point. They try and build up a relationship with the player to show her side of the story and reasons for killing Joel. This feels forced and goes on way to long. 4. This redemption arc goes out the window when she starts killing all the wolves members who she knew and was a part of for years. 5. Tommy gets shot in the head and some how pops up at the end of the game. 6. The pacing of the game at the end feels like it will never end, it’s dragged out way too long, 7. The way that Tommy spoke to Ellie at the end of the game was so out of character it was laughable. I’m giving this game a 5 out of 10 because of the graphics, which are outstanding. The reason the majority of people loved the first game was because of the story and relationships between characters. I really wanted to like this game. I have never written a review before and just thought I would try and give an honest opinion on why I think naughty dog missed the mark with this game. Expand

Visually the game is gorgeous, I loved the gameplay from the first game and this one is very similar. I don't agree with some that it needs to evolve so much when you have dozens of first person shooters that use the same engines and don't feel very different to each other, there was only one Last of Us. If you enjoyed the gameplay mechanics from the first one there's no reason you wont enjoy this one too, I personally love the gameplay mechanics.
Unfortunately its impossible to play it and avoid the story, and if you are also a big fan of the first one you will quite likely be hugely disappointed by the direction they take in the second one. It feels very jolting which although I'm sure was their intention, it just takes too much away from the first one and doesn't build on it in a meaningful way. Their treatment of the characters we grew to love in my opinion is just horrible. The inclusion of representation (gender identity politics) feels forced and transparent which comes across both lecturey and unnecessary in a post apocolyptic world whereas games like Dragonage Inquisition were able to include it without having that effect. It also felt a bit immersion breaking to play as a female character that was obviously on steroids with hulking arms and legs - where does she get access to that much quality and quantity of food along with steroids in a post apocolyptic world where people are just trying to survive (the steroid physique is not an exaggeration). To be clear I have no issue playing as female characters and where choice is given I usually do just that, I chose to play as Kassandra on AC Odyssey.

As far as Last of Us gameplay goes again I feel that has remained in tact and improved, visually, functionally and shouldn't disappoint anyone familiar with and fond of the first, I would definitely buy a separate multiplayer if that's the route they choose to take.

Having played through the game twice now, I can say that the Last of US 2 is a very strange experience and one that has clearly divided players and fans alike. I make this distinction between the two as I feel the game provides a difference experience for both and as a result will define your overall view of the game. Essentially I feel that Part 2 was not written as a game but as movie. It employs shock tactics, gratuitous violence against loved characters and emotive scenes to create an experience on a level not scene before in gaming , but more akin to TV shows such as Game of Thrones and the Walking dead. I say a movie as in-between the numerous cutscenes you pretty much do the same thing, explore each area clearing enemies via stealth or shoot outs in an identical manner to the first, the gameplay in many respects has not evolved at all from the first albeit a brief car and horse chase and use of a boat for parts of the game (however the game is visually stunning). The gameplay seems like filler and essentially something to do whilst you are watching a film. In my personal view it is this story that is this issue for many. The main problem is that part 1 and it’s DLC was so successful as it focused on the relationships between well developed characters (Ellie and Joel and Ellie and Riley) to great effect and created a story that fans became heavily invested in. This level of success is simply not achieved in part 2.The Last of Part 2 seems to destroy these characters for shock value and twists for the sake of a lesson about revenge and violence which has in all honesty been done many times before, especially if you have watched the aforementioned TV shows.
Many fans were expecting and led to believe that there would be a continuation of the previous story they loved so much but were in fact given the opposite and understandably feel aggrieved. Players who aren’t so invested in the characters, new to the series or who did not resonate with the Characters actions or relationship in the previous game may however have an entirely different take and really enjoy the game.
The second issue is the antagonist come protagonist Abby. Again many fans do not simply like this character. Her first act is to kill Joel in brutal fashion and become the catalyst for Ellie’s revenge and the first section of the game . The player is then made to play as Abby in the second half whilst we attempt to understand her motives and back story which lead to her actions. It is here for many that the writers fail to convey enough sympathy to fans for the character to mean anything, apart from someone they still want to exact revenge on (which does not happen). Changing an antagonist to a protagonist is a difficult feat and one that may have needed an entire game on its own to do. The ending itself may leave many feeling unsatisfied and it is continuing this story (if ND decide to do this at all) that will be challenging itself as many feel the heart has been taken out of the series.

As I see it the success of part one was in its 2 main ingredients Elle and Joel. These special ingredients have been used up in part 2 to create an experience not seen before in gaming, but now that’s it. Without them the series now feels like just another generic apocalypse scenario going forward. At the end Ellie is left alone and maimed and appears to have no further use other than to track or be tracked down by the fireflies (Probably Abby and Lev) and sacrifice herself for a chance or a cure, which to many diminishes the whole point of the first game.
There is no doubt that this title has caused huge debate not seen before on a game and if that was ND’s aim then they have succeeded. However I can’t help but feel saddened that such great characters which fans could have enjoyed further adventures with (as this is meant to be a game after all ) will never happen. I don’t feel that this game deserves such low or high scores (ignoring all the hateful comments) and feel that they detract away from the things that players and fans love/hate about the game. My overall view is that it is a venture worth experiencing but one that may not be to everyone’s liking and I personally wish that the Joel/Ellie adventure had not concluded in such a way. The flashbacks were my favourite part and the ending left me unsatisfied and craving more of the magic that we had in part 1. It is a game at the end of the day which is meant to be fun and I simply didn’t have that feeling come it’s conclusion. However my own experiences in life and the job I do mean that I look to games as a form of escapism and fun. Others may enjoy the “bleak real to life apocalypse story” hence why we are seeing such stark reviews.

I would say this game is definitely worth trying out. Don’t watch let’s play gamers online, you should do it yourself.

But, the emotions i had after the game is finished, and after some plot details I feel embarrassed, lost. I’m not sure if that what you should get after you complete the triple A game story.

Half of the game i had no will to play, as i had no empathy to the circumstances. I just played wanting to finish the game as fast as i can.

My suggestion is to rent the game from stores/friends, and complete it. Of course if you do not catch the spoilers online.

It constantly feels like this game is trying to make me feel the hate and anger that Ellie feels, but it just falls flat because it doesn't allow the player to make significant decisions or choices and the choices that the character makes go against the common sense of any rational human being. It wants to be an RPG but it is too linear, it wants to be open world but, again, it's linear. The gameplay is pretty much the same as the first for better or worse, but the graphics and even sound are remarkably improved and makes it fun to play if you can get past the occasional poor writing and constant glaring plot holes. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
