This brief review is broken down into 3 sections - Graphics, gameplay and story, which are then weighted according to the type of game I believe the TLOU2 is - a story driven game. Given this, I'd weight each section the following:

    Graphics - 30%,
Looks good overall with minor aberrations - 9/10

    Gameplay - 30%
Almost unchanged from TLOU and is quite repetitive - 7/10

    Story - 40%.
Unfortunately, TLOU2 suffers from a lacklustre story of revenge that tries too hard to draw parallels whilst simultaneously ignoring its grievous mistakes - 4/10

In my opinion the game deserves a 6 or 7 out of 10. Would I buy it at full price? No. $40? Probably.

Only 3 of the new characters are actually sympathetic. The rest are a bunch of murdering hypocritical psychopaths. The story focuses on themes anyone with an ounce of sympathy or empathy knows. Revenge ≠ equal justice and killing for anything other than survival is bad. It's completely pointless and only tries to make people feel **** and not try and convey anything of real substance. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As much as I would like to give this game a zero, I'm going to be objective about this. FYI, I played the game to completion - Platinumed it even, so I have every right to criticize it as I've seen everything it has to offer. In short, this game is a far cry from the masterpiece that is its predecessor. They tear away everything you loved about the first game and shove some new, twisted narrative in your face that just doesn't resonate. The story is just waaaaay too far off base from the first one and here's why:
    1. They absolutely DISGRACE the characters. Joel is just treated like a **** and killed within the first two hours. The guy you literally spend the majority of the game playing as in TLOU1. This is a huge mistake because he should've lasted at least half-way through the game, as it's the moments between him and Ellie that really make TLOU. I was expecting him to die, but not like that. He deserved a somber, heroic death. Probably protecting Ellie or something like that — but if only his death made logical sense! You’re telling me by pure chance he finds Abby, and then he and Tommy walk into a room full of strangers, unarmed, and proceed to disclose their real names and where they’re from? Who does that?! Especially when you consider how on edge Joel was in the first game - you can’t trust anyone in this world. There’s also Jessie who we all got to like then he was just shot in the face out of nowhere, and before we could internalize it - BOOM flashback. We never really get to go back and see the characters remorse about Jesse. I feel he was only included as a catalyst for the story in getting Dina pregnant.
    2. The latter half of the game sucks. The story comes to a screeching halt when Abby finds Ellie and the gang, then you have to wait like 8-10 **** hours to continue the present day story. What's most infuriating is most of Abby's segment is irrelevant. Who cares about Yara and Lev? Seriously? They just show up out of nowhere and we're forced to start liking them. And the stupid romance with Owen, Jesus. It feels really forced how much they’e trying to get you to empathize with these new characters when all you want is to see more of Joel and Ellie. It doesn’t help when you remember that these are the ones that brutally murdered your favorite character. Joel saved Abby's life and she still proceeded to torture him like that never happened. She's irredeemable and empathizing with her is a very hard pill to swallow.
    3. The ending is blasphemy. You're telling me Ellie comes all this way, and instead of finishing things, she lets Joel's murderer go? **** Heresy! I played through this entire game with the intention of avenging Joel. Joel would’ve burned down the world for Ellie had she been the one who died, and Ellie wouldn’t kill the person who caused her so much suffering? The ending is so dissatisfying and ultimately teaches you nothing. It renders the entire journey pointless.
If I had to rate the story alone, I'd give it a 3/10. I absolutely hated it.
It's not all bad though. Here's what I loved about the game (this is where most of the points come from):
The flashback scenes with Joel and Ellie are fantastic, and they really show what kind of potential this game had if they just continued focusing on these two. As triggered as I was with Joel's death, I was buying into the story and the "revenge quest," but man they broke my confinement when they started beating me to death with how prevalent Abby was. The graphics and gameplay are truly exceptional. This is without a doubt the best looking game on PS4 and the gameplay is much more refined from the first game. It's by no means revolutionary, it's enhanced but more of the same. That's perfectly fine though, because I loved the combat from the first game and wasn't expecting them to change it.
Ultimately, TLOU2 is just a huge disappointment. This game had so much potential if they just stuck to what this series is actually about - Joel and Ellie. It's most infuriating when you recall that the marketing was all manipulated to get you to believe Joel and Ellie would be the center of the story when that couldn't be farther from the truth. If I'm being honest, this felt more like Abby's game than Ellie's, which is ridiculous when you consider that this was being sold as Ellie's game. They even lied two years ago when they said that she would be the only playable character.
To conclude, I would highly advise against buying this game new. Do not support Sony financially, because that just means you're happy with what they did. I recommend either just watching the cinematics online or buying it used (which is what I did because I refuse to support this). There are things to enjoy, but it's not even close to be considered a good game. It's painfully mediocre which is unacceptable when you realize that this is a sequel to one of the most heralded games of all time. I can't believe we waited seven years for this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I bought the original 'story driven' game The Last of Us, when it first came out on PS3, and absolutely loved it, playing it over and over again. So much so, I bought it again for PS4. I loved all the main story characters, Tess, Marlene, Bill, Tommy, Maria, Sam, Henry, all interesting, diverse, strong characters, but the dynamic of Joel and Ellie's relationship, their backgrounds, their personalities and the close bond they had at the end of the story just blew me away.

I watched the E3 trailer, and every one that came after, looking forward to another fantastic story with these two characters, and was sadly disappointed.

I'm giving this game a 5/10, because I buy video games for the same reason I buy books, to escape from a world that never let's you catch a breath, before pushing other people's ideals and agendas at you, and that is exactly what this game does. I've read articles defending the developer/director, stating that this is art and an artist has the right to make what they choose to make, I disagree, it isn't just art, there are certainly elements, but nobody would buy a piece of art, without seeing it first and ND denied us access to this with embargos, strikes, false advertising, lies and dishonesty and worse than all of that a complete disrespect toward the gamers who bought and loved the first game.

What's good (for me personally) : Gameplay engaging in stealth areas, new infected enemies genuinely creepy, great graphics, flashbacks with Joel and Ellie, new characters Jesse and Dina.. Oh and Manny's death, that's for the spitting.

What's bad (where to start) : Messy time lines, too many glitches, bad characters Mel, Owen, Abby, Manny, Lev and sister (can't remember her name), all with no character/complexity, all one dimensional. Seriously unsubtle agenda pushing (we have brains ND), character assassinations from previous game, backtracking on established lore from previous GAME (because it doesn't suit your AGENDA) Some bad voice acting, plot holes galore ( this was in the 1st game too, YOU CAN'T HAVE A VACCINE FOR A DISEASE CAUSED BY A FUNGUS!!! The dogs are irritating (attack dogs are not cute, yes I killed them because they're not real, besides I'm a cat person). Abby wouldn't exist at that size in a post apocalyptic world, the surgeon at the end of the first game was old, Abby's dad appears to be in his late 30's early forties which wouldn't make him old enough to have been qualified as a doctor nevermind a surgeon ( as well as the only person capable of making a 'vaccine'

Honestly, I wasn’t a huge fan of the first. It was one of the first PS3 games I can remember buying. I kept waiting for some sort of transcendent moment to happen during my playthrough but one never did. Many others disagreed, and The Last of Us is now cited as among the best games of all time. At first I wasn’t planning on playing the sequel. However, after seeing the leaks, the excessive DMCA takedowns, and the controversy surrounding certain plot elements I was starting to get intrigued. Since there are no new movies coming out, The Last of Us Part II is the closest 2020 has to a proper summer blockbuster, so why wouldn’t I want to play the hot new game and give my take on it?

While the original was a relatively linear plotline, Part II has a considerably more complex narrative structure. On paper, the storyline is brilliant, as it asks us to consider the consequences of violence and the multiple sides to every story. What one person may see as justified is a heinous act in another person’s eyes. It asks us to look beyond mere notions of people being “good” or “evil”. However, the way in which the game goes about exploring this is suspect, to say the least. The story is leaden with so many flashbacks, parallel events, and perspective shifts that the story is at times difficult to follow and the pacing suffers. Since The Last of Us Part II can no longer rely on the shock of a new franchise, this kind of storytelling feels like trying to compensate for having to be a sequel. The only option is to go bigger, louder, messier, gorier, and raunchier, and not every idea is a good one. It’s also a hefty game in terms of its length, clocking in at anywhere from 25-30 hours. It’s by far the longest game Naughty Dog has ever made.

The Last of Us Part II does not offer a dramatic departure in gameplay from its predecessor, yet its tone and themes couldn’t be more different. Part II tells one of the medium’s most ambitious stories to date, but boy is it messy. It’s the messy and sprawling nature that makes it a fascinating game, though definitely not a masterpiece like most critics claim. It’s too deliberately imperfect and misshapen for that. It’s the kind of game that for better or worse will have people debating its story decisions for months, if not years to come, and it’s bound to be a cultural lightning rod given the lack of new movies coming this year.

Love and hate: two sides of the same coin.

I give the game a 5 because I feel the game does not deserve a 0 nor does it deserve a 10. Amazing gameplay and voice actors did such an amazing job with their characters. However, I couldn't help but feel so miserable playing through this story as I felt forced to feel a certain way about characters as the writers wanted. An example of this is the section with the dog that the player is forced to kill, then forced to fall in love with this dog and feel guilty for something I did not want to play through. I continued to play, hoping there would be a bone thrown for me having to endure this tragic tale but nothing of that sort ever happened. As sad as it is for me to say, I will not look forward to any game from Naughty Dog that involves the writers associated with this game. Expand

If you were comparing the two games, this one completely misses the mark story wise. Yes there were some great flashback moments at the museum but that’s where the good parts end.

I feel they could have left Ellie and Joel’s story alone. There are tons of story arcs to explore. I had a more enjoyable time reading the notes from artifacts that I found.

I would have preferred them make up characters and develop them rather than this half-baked story we got

Ellie’s revenge story is so bad it’s comical.
That’s it, she’s hell bent on revenge at any cost. No character development

First, they showed us an ideal life where we were all excited to embrace the sequel and then allowed a zombie writing staff to infect the franchise by sticking its teeth into the arm of the fans via a golf club. However, even after this, I held hope we'd tie off the arm, chop it off, and be able to move on into a new story. What I got instead was a game where the infection spread so much that by mid-game I was playing a character who was an undead version of the protagonist and time-hopping like I was Doctor Who. They tried to make me care with every trick in the book but it couldn't stop it from feeling like I was in a failed marriage. All the joy was gone and all that was left with was an obligation to see it through since I already made the 59.99 commitment. Like I never thought a game would need a Synder cut much less something from Naughty Dog but seriously had they let you played it chronologically & mad a few revisions this could be an 8.5. Alas since the game felt so miserable I can only award it half the points for its graphics and the few parts I liked. I strongly recommend they review their prior titles to relearn what made them great. Things like filling the player with some sense of enjoyment other than just revenge porn & angsty guitar solos. Personally right after playing Last of Us 2 I replayed Uncharted 4 as a sort of cleanse and I'll say it still holds up so I'm confident you guys can do better next time. Neil Drukmann (the writer) said that the relationship between Ellie and Joel was the most important thing to remember, he said "no one loves these characters as much as we did and the sequel would be about Ellie and Joel". He even said "he and the team had played games where you were other characters and they just didn't feel right, they pulled you from the main story"... "Part two will be about Ellie and Joels story and their relationship". And he told the truth, for about 7 hours anyway! Trouble is the game is about 25 hours long!

Don't get me wrong, the Last of us Part 2 deliveres excellent gameplay, great graphics, music, mechanics and phenomenal gunplay. However, the storyline was an absolute mess.

SPOILER... They kill a main character and some won't be happy... including me. Now It wasn't great, but I understand why they did it. Yes it was upsetting, but it was a great driver for every emotion Ellie had and her continued journey. But then (and this is the real kicker). You are then forced to play the game using the character that kills the main character mentioned earlier... for the majority of the game too. It make absolutely no sense. Add into this that the this character is a lifeless and utterly dislikeable character, made worse by her actions in killing one of the main characters.

So the first part of the game (with Ellie) I thought was a 10/10. But the rest isn't enjoyable at all and you are left wondering when you will get to be Ellie again.

Add into that the fact Naughty dog wanted to use the game as a platform to showcase every problem with LGBTQ issues in the world today. Again I have no issue with this being included in a game, but the sheer amount was too much. It ended up pulling you away from the main story and everything that made the first game so amazing and the platform it created.

Also Naughty dog lied in the trailer by cutting in shots of Joel from the first game into the trailer to make people think they were going to play with Joel more and no mention of the twist that everyone hates!

So at the end, after all the above. I haven't felt this cheated since the final season of Game of thrones!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics, game play and acting are amazing, I think the game suffers from an inconsistency between the promise and the pay off. I took the promise as revenge, but they attempt to substitute the payoff but don't stick the landing.

I believe they attempted to make me want a forgiveness payoff by showing me the costs of revenge, but while I came to care about Abby, I never cared enough about her or her friends to compare to Ellie/Tommy's satisfaction of taking revenge. Take Mel, who I found pretty unlikable in “the other person” role to Abby (who is also “the other person” so there are no winners) and didn't have much of a personality. I felt bad when she died because she was pregnant, not because I liked her. I became more, not less, okay with it during Abby’s story, since I liked her less as I got to know her. I feel like the game wanted me to not want anyone to die but I only cared about Ellie’s friends, Lev and Yara.

I feel like the forgiveness pay off didn’t stick since they didn’t tease it throughout the story. To me, it doesn’t fit Ellie’s character arc to let Abby go, even if they have players frustrated approval by making us sufficiently depressed by the end fight and presented Abby as having suffered enough. Particularly since the Joel flashback didn’t coach against revenge, just showed that Ellie was ready to forgive Joel. Forgiving Joel doesn’t necessarily impact Ellie and Abby’s story. If anything, it should piss Ellie’s character off more since she never got to rebuild with Joel and rarely forgives.

I feel like they criminally underutilized Joel and gave him a poor death that made Abby irredeemable in the players eyes. I had nowhere to put how much I hated that Joel was dead, except to point that at Abby. That then makes it unsatisfying to end up caring about Abby since you know you don’t want to, particularly since not caring would make like 15 hours of gameplay boring and frustrating. I feel like they could’ve made it grey by having something like Joel saving Abby when she’s coming to kill him, and he gets bitten in the process. Abby then not wanting to kill Joel since he saved her. Then Abby or Ellie (for maximum depressive effect) kill Joel at his request. Then Tommy and Ellie get blinded by rage at Abby for creating the situation and have to process Joel's death and unintentional sacrifice through the story. At least that way there would be some decent reason that he was dead and that killing Abby would negate Joel’s sacrifice. It also wouldn't make the player want to hate Abby. Could even have them make up and work together in a climax against Wolves, Scars and Infected all fighting at once. That might’ve delivered players the forgiveness substitution and capitalized on it for an awesome final battle.

In my opinion, the general story stumbles at the start, with Joel's death lacking meaning or build up, and I was unsatisfied to see that they didn’t build on it with flashbacks. The idea of Ellie’s revenge story is satisfying but they quickly get the threads tangled with Dina’s pregnancy, Jesse being back in the picture, trying to save Tommy, and hunting down the group that killed Joel. It seems like the first act pay off they finally settle for is “life is complicated and gets in the way”. Which is true, but it shouldn’t mean that they don’t satisfy story points. It’s also a lame climax.

I get that the game is supposed to be a difficult story, but tLoU was difficult and satisfying. Likable, if tortured, characters had meaningful relationships and lived their stories in a way that was satisfying because it fit their character. Joel became the father we always wanted him to be as positive payoff, and had the hospital breakout as the consequence. Ellie grew to love and trust someone as positive payoff, and accepts Joel’s lie as the consequence. That’s classic “yes but..” storytelling.

I think tLoU2 suffered with too many weak arcs. What was Jesse’s arc? Seems like he’s just in there to be a decent bloke and then die for dramatic effect. Tommy wants Abby dead, fails, so sends Ellie years later when revenge has cost him his health and marriage. That’s not much of an arc. Ellie was revenge driven, then moves past it, then can't move on, and then seemingly moves on for no reason other than player payoff. Abby grows to understand that Scars are people too (a fight we don’t really have a bone in) then gets tortured for Joel/revenge unrelated reasons.

The game promised me that Abby would pay for Joel’s death. Then didn’t show character progression to realize that promise. Then attempted a payoff substitution without putting in the work with arcs. Just making sense to the player isn’t enough, actions that don't fit a character's arc are unsatisfying. It all seems to contradict the bold choice in tLoU, to be given the ending that the arcs take you to. Kinda feel like they missed why tLoU was so satisfying

Let’s address the elephant in the room first: there’s little doubt that this game’s prominent LGBT characters have led many professional reviewers to rate this game much higher than it deserves. My problem with this game isn’t that the playable characters are all women, or that it has LGBT characters. My problem is that the game is too long (around 25 hours), but the gameplay is not challenging or varied enough to keep it interesting.

The appeal of Last of Us was the story: the relationship between Joel and Ellie. The gameplay was OK, not great, but the game only lasted 12 or so hours. This game is double the length, and retains all the same core gameplay elements as the first one. About 15 hours in, it just started to feel tedious. Another abandoned building to search for supplies, another group of infected or human enemies to fight using the same tactics. There’s almost no variety here. The story is OK, but nowhere near as compelling as the first. A big reason for this is that half the game is spent as the new character, Abby. There’s no getting around the fact that we simply don’t care about her as much as we do Ellie. In addition, the human groups in this game are thinly sketched. There is very little information on how these groups formed, their purposes/intents/beliefs, why they are fighting each other, etc. It’s all very vague and very thinly sketched. One group seems to be vaguely power-hungry, the other a bunch of religious zealots whose beliefs are barely explored at all beyond vague gesturing to their “prophet.” This religious group is also the hook for the introduction of the trans character: the trans character was a member of the religious group, but fled because they wouldn’t accept her. That’s about as uncompelling, standard Hollywood fare/boilerplate as you can get. It

It seems clear now that Last of Us should have been a standalone game. It did not need a sequel and this game is nowhere near as interesting as the first one. My advice would be, don’t waste your time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A middle of the road score for a middle of the road movie masquerading itself as a game. I swear that after a battle between Ellie and the main antagonist, there was a 20+ minute cinematic of Ellie in her new life with only little bits of walking around to "herd the goats" or, having killed a rabbit (in the scene) walking back to the farm where she lives. That was the only control you had.

The graphics and music score are amazing and if the game play lived up to them, it would easily be a 10/10. But they don't. And it isn't.

I care about Ellie and Joel. I spent 15+ hours with them in the first game and wanted to see how things progressed with them again and Naughty Dog had a great opportunity to do so. The story could so easily have been Ellie finding out what Joel did at the end of the first game, running off and Joel chasing after her to bring her home. Cutting between the two characters alternately for varied game play.

There became no chance of anything of the sort when Joel was killed but at that moment, I really, honestly and truthfully and wanted revenge against Abby, his murderer.

I don't care about Abby at all and, midway through the game, you are forced to play as her. I found myself deliberately throwing her off of high places or leaving her to the infected just to see her die. I also found myself playing JUST to finish the game and get my 100GB of hard disk space back.

All of the other characters are unmemorable and mostly unlikable as well. So I didn't. When they died (always scripted, no matter what you did) it meant nothing to me.

The thing that really got me was exactly how linear the game is. There is a point where Ellie is chasing one of the gang who killed Joel into some spores. This girl is dead either way. Either Ellie kills her or the spores get her and she turns. The problem is, you don't get that choice. All you can do is continually press a button to cave her skull in. I don't expect Mass Effect like choices in a Naughty Dog game but I'd hope to have some choice along the way.

So after all the hype, the misleading trailers and pre-purchase excitement, I can only give this "game" 5/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I first played this game, it was my first experience to "The last of us", so my review is gonna be much more positive than others (and just so you know, I'm in a playthrough of the first right now. Will write a review when I beat that). Anyways, lets get on why I think this game is painfully mediocre.

1: Joel's death. After playing only HALF of the first game, the sequel pisses me off SO hard. Like, I would consider main characters dying acceptable if it tied perfectly with the story and it's themes in a clear way, while also keeping it subtle. Tlou2 does absolutely none of these! What it does is instead focus on the SIDE characters (abby) in the second half of the game, which is straight up filler and a waste of not only my time, but everyone who's played this game's time. And even in the Ellie half of the story, it just shrugs off the theme it attempted to show in more of a preference towards humanizing everyone that ellie meets. That works for some stories, but THIS IS THE SEQUEL TO THE LAST OF US! It completely ignores the theme it tried to narrate until the very end of the game, where it also neglects it's theme by making it focus on ellie and abby's rivalry. And at the very end of it all, ellie spares abby, along with trans baldy with her, which is SUPER STUPID JUST KILL ABBY YOU DIPSH!T ELLIE! Anyway I talked for too long.

2: The gameplay. It's last of us gameplay of course it's really good! Probably the only thing I really like about this game, outside of tommy (btw tommy is god tier character). But then you're reminded that the 1st's gameplay exist, then you play the 1st. If you want better gameplay from tlou2, play tlou, you won't regret it!

3: The obnoxious bugs. When you consider that the last months of development were during the pandemic (insert infected joke here) and the fact that the game was rush immensely for a 2020 release, of course there's gonna be a lot of bugs. While in the 1st they were only visual glitches, in the 2nd, they are full on "you clip into the wall while walking into a building and you die" type glitch. I probably ran into 10 glitches while playing this game, the 1st one I talked about actually happening to me in the overworld section of the game. I also found a glitch where you dance around a door before you open it, yeah that exists.

Anyway tlou2 is mediocre or byeeeeeeeee.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll preface this review by saying the first instalment of The last of Us is one of my favourite games and that Naughty Dog are my favourite developer, so I was eagerly awaiting the release of part 2 since its announcement. I didn't have much in the way of expectations or preconceptions of what the game would be, other than that it would continue Ellie's story (since this is what we were told to expect) and we would experience her character growing and developing. Unfortunately what I experienced was a poorly constructed story filled with plot holes and little to no major character development.

While I didn't care much for how they killed Joel off, I accepted it and thought okay, his death is a device to fuel the narrative and I was looking forward to continuing the game. Over the next few hours playing through Ellie's portion of the game I enjoyed the gameplay, but still found myself struggling to feel invested in the plot and the lack of character development was disappointing. I feel like I liked Dina and Jesse just because Ellie liked them, rather than because the plot showed me any reasons to feel fond of them.

When it came to playing as Abby I found myself asking out loud why I was having to play as her continually until I realised I was going to be playing her story for quite some portion of the game. Initially I objectively did not like her, and by the end of her part of the game, I still did not like her. I found myself rushing through this part of the game (which arguably made combat parts of the gameplay more fun) because I was simply not enjoying it. I found it so hard to feel invested in her character and therefore was not incentivised to continue. When I died as Ellie I always felt some kind of reaction but dying as Abbie could not have bothered me less. Sometimes dying was more satisfying than continuing with the story. I realise that the story was designed to draw parallels between the 2 protagonists and try to make us feel empathy towards Abby but it just did not work for me. Although I did enjoy some parts of the plot surrounding Lev's story, even though the dynamic between him and Abby felt like a watered down copy of Joel and Ellie.

After a couple of days to reflect on it, I think the ending is okay it its own right. Though unsatisfying, and convoluted with a lot of symbology that would have been better spread more evenly throughout the game, I understand it. It is a bleak conclusion and not one I feel strongly for either way but it was needed. I remember playing through the chapter where we first see Ellie and Dina at their farm and thinking this looks absolutely stunning, but the story up until now has been virtually redundant. If none of the events from the point where Joel is killed transpired Dina would still be pregnant, she would still have her baby, her and Ellie would likely have ended up together since their relationship was going that way anyway - the only differences would be that they would still be living at Jackson and Joel and Jesse would still be alive. Neither Ellie nor Dina's character seemed developed through the events in Seattle. This feeling of redundancy left me massively unsatisfied.

To conclude, the gameplay and level building are exemplary but it is a poorly paced and written game that failed to make me truly care for any of the new characters, and sucked the charm out of those the original made me love. This game said too much and not enough all at the same time. I can say with genuine sadness that I did not enjoy The Last of Us Part 2, which I wanted to love so badly. It's the only game of this console generation that I've personally played that I can say I've honestly found to be an unpleasant experience. So much so that I felt the need to create a Metacritic account just to write this review.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is beautiful, but the story decisions are horrid. Probably the worst story driven game I have played in a very long time. The lack of consciousness by the development team is shocking. Instead of playing a story driven game, you play a vendetta and revenge story line that lacks because of the characters surrounding you. Then, you make me not able to finish that vendetta... You ruin both characters from the first game in this disgrace of a sequel. Atrocious decisions by this development team who honesty should not work on another Naughty Dog story game ever again. The gameplay isn’t the best because you’re searching for collectibles more than playing the story most of the time which is probably why they put so many of them in the game to distract you from probably the worst writing and development of a 2nd installment ever. This game should serve as a catalyst on how to ruin one of the best video games ever made. I am honestly shocked Sony gave the green light to release this after someone read this horrible script and plot. So many flaws and horrible decisions you’ll be baffled. There were so many ways they could have built a fantastic second installment, but this game falls flat within the first hour. If you want to play a great game and don’t care about getting mad about the story it’s a good buy. The game is average and worth a buy once it’s on sale. If you’re going to get upset and break a controller, you can surmise what they did and watch the 25+ hour waste of time on YouTube or Twitch.

Did you love the original characters of the first game? Then you will be heavily disappointed.
Do you dislike rape fantasies? Even if they include a character that looks similar to the game director having violent sex with a person of dubious sex that looks like a steroid user?
Do you dislike a company that tries to censor and get banned youtube channels and twitter accounts because they posted info about their game?

To me it’s a shame that all this talent was wasted with a story I don’t think it had to be told. I have to give them credit for taking risks, and cranking the intensity up to 11, but the gamble doesn’t pay off. It uses the original story as a springboard, strangely not understanding what made it special, and why its bittersweet open ending worked so well. It’s a bleak story, poorly paced, reeking of self importance and not meant to be enjoyable.

As I said, there’s a lot of talent in this game, and it has its moments. I think the 10/10 reviews are as bad as the 0/10 reviews, both are toxic overreactions. In the end, it only matters if you liked it or not. I personally, did not.

The visuals are incredible, the sound effects and music are great but the story lacks and in order for the story to go how they wanted they had to make a series of coincidences happen and make all the characters seem completely stupid.

    ** Spoilers **
Joel's death is written horribly and disregards his (and Tommy's) entire personality from the first game. The actions he and Tommy make are so out of character and make both of then seem dumb, just so that the revenge story can take place. Both of these characters were very smart in The Last of Us and were cautious about giving information to strangers.

Abby and her group leave Tommy and Ellie alive just so the story can continue! If the characters were making smart decisions this story would not have been able to happen.

You have to play 10 hours with the person who brutely murdered Joel and the creators try to make us feel bad for her because of Joel killing her father. Abby is a terrible person in general and shows no compassion for the people she kills, unlike Ellie.

I enjoyed the gameplay but the story lacks, it would have been so much better if they took a different path.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I was about a fourth of the way into TLOU2, I decided to leave a review on this website. I was admittedly bothered by all the premature hate of the game, and the negative reviews bombing this site within minutes of it being released. My rating was a 10/10, and after finishing it I realize that was a mistake. I will focus mainly on the story, because that’s where most of the issues I have are at. Joel’s death had a major impact on me, my heart was racing and my hands were shaking after that scene. It felt like I was about to be taken on an emotional journey with Ellie, because as the player I could feel her anger. But to my surprise, that journey was cut short at the half way point of the game. Going back in time to play as Abby was disruptive to the flow of the story, and muddied the waters by introducing too many extra characters. It took away from what could have been longer, more expansive flashback scenes with Joel and Ellie. Contrasting her extreme, violent and vengeful present with a more relaxed past at Jackson. By the time I played through the second half of the game, I wasn’t very invested in how it all ended. It felt anticlimactic and disappointing, a mere fraction of what the story had the potential to be. Writers these days seem to be so overly obsessed with subverting expectations, that they allow it to take away from the quality of what they’re creating. It’s unfortunate that people drowned out the airwaves with hateful nonsense, because now the creators will brush off every constructive criticism that is given. Which will probably lead to the same mistakes being made when they inevitably develop TLOU3.... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Didn’t think I would have to say this about this series but the Last of Us part 2 is a poorly written Story with boring and uninteresting characters and just told in such a awful way for many reasons. My first reason why is due to the way on how Joel died. I wasn’t upset about him dying but I was just upset about the way he died. Joel and Tommy are smart men and Joel knows whenever something is wrong and how to play situations. The fact that Joel and Tommy are not getting any red flags or nothing makes me feel like his death was rushed and they didn’t put at all much care in how to make his death meaningful and believable. Another reason why I dislike the story is how they treated Ellie also. In the first game I LOVED Ellie and she was my favorite character in the first game along side Joel of course. She is a down to earth girl who tries to have fun even though the world that they are in is filled with evil and hate. But in part 2 Ellie is just in my opinion some Ignorant, selfish, uninteresting girl who is just HELLBENT on murdering Abby and her crew to get revenge to which she kills TONS of innocent people and even dogs and just can’t understand why Joel did what he did in the hospital. I also don’t like how the random MPC surgeon that Joel killed suddenly has a Daughter. I think this is lazy writing and could've done better if she was like the daughter of Marlene or maybe related to David. Furthermore, I don't like how they basically shove Abby down your throat and they try SUPER SUPER hard to make you like her to which fails because you had her kill Joel literally in the first like 2 hours even though Joel saved her alongside Tommy too which kills any kind of relationship immediately. I think that the characters on Abby’s side are all either uninteresting or just there to just be there and hold barely any purpose, same even goes for characters like Dina and Jessie to which had a TON of potential. Another thing about Abby, is that she is SO evil and such a awful/dumb person because she was gonna kill Dina even though Ellie said Dina was pregnant and that she had nothing to do with the killings but Abby didn’t care. At least when Ellie killed Mel, she was shocked and sick to her stomach about it. She also even tortured Joel to death in front of Ellie and she kills Jessie and somehow doesn’t kill Tommy when she shot him in the head. Another reason why is because as much as I felt bad for Abby’s father dying, It doesn’t justify killing Joel. She doesn’t even ask him why he did that or anything. She just wants to murdering/torturing him and not care about why he did what he did. I feel like if we got to play as Abby and see her relationship with her dad more or even play as Abby to begin the game, she would have been more likable. I also don’t like how they basically give all of our characters in the first game a awful ending and how they all suffer but Abby gets away with everything she wants in the end. Its like they want you to hate Ellie and everybody except for Abby. The main thing that I hate is how Ellie leaves Dina to hunt down Abby again to which I don’t blame her and to which I was on Ellie’s side but that quickly changed however when Ellie a split second before drowning Abby to death and Abby biting her fingers off lets her go and now comes home to find Dina and the baby are gone, and everyone she knows is either dead or left her. But the main thing that sucks is how Ellie’s only fear of being alone came true. I was SO SO hurt to wait 7 years for them to expend the relationship of Joel and Ellie due to the trailers and all the interviews before the games release and all that I got in my opinion is just some poor writing story about revenge is bad but only for Ellie but its okay for Abby to which I don’t care at all about her and I left the game feeling depressed, upset, and just felt like I was better off never playing it so that way I don’t have to deal with knowing Joel and Ellie’s fate. I also felt like the writers took everything in the first game from the characters to the theme of the game and threw it all out the window and ignored everything that they built. Now this point that i’m bring up here is something that I saw a youtuber give and the point was how Sarah’s death in the first game was just ignored and they made her death pointless because Sarah’s death is what made Joel the person who he was in the first game which was a hard and tough guy on the outside but a father who lost his daughter but got given another chance at that with Ellie to which it sucks to see that. Sucks to say this but I can honestly say that as a fan of the first game since its release in 2013 I no longer care about what happens to any of the characters even Ellie which sucks to say and I'm not excited for part 3 if they ever do it or even the HBO series to which i have no plans on watching again because of bad I was hurt while playing this game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm on my 2nd playthrough and to be honest, I would've rated this much lower if I had only played it once. I really didn't like Abby's part or any of the characters in her story (except Yara and Lev). I can write an entire essay about why Abby's crew is such a stereotypical group (especially Owen) but the point is the disconnect and general displeasure came from them. I like Abby a little better after she's spent some time with Lev but Seattle Day 1-3 with Abby was just not fun for me. It felt like TLOU had these amazingly written morally gray characters then in TLOU2 we get.... Abby's crew. I loved that Joel, Tommy, and pretty much most of the characters in TLOU knew they were morally gray, even Marlene who wanted to save the world. But then we get these Salt Lake City crew who thinks they are always the good guys, and that going across the country to torture one guy is justice, not simple revnege.

Again, the 2nd part, I really didnt enjoy. A pity too because if I didnt play it again, I would've forgotten just how amazing and emotionally inpacting the first part is. The final fight didnt make much sense to me either. Ellie spent months to track and kill Abby and when she's there, only then did she get her "peace"? I dont buy it. It feels like part 2 was made for the sole reason of "surprising the players".

The worst part for me is the false advertisement. They advertised this as an Ellie centric game. It was not. It felt like Naughty Dog lied to me and I hated it.

Hopefully you enjoy this game more than I did. I wont be buying the next one.

The game isn't enjoyable due to bad story decisions. The gameplay and graphics are good but not mind blowing. The 0/10 and 10/10 reviews are both wrong... It's just an average game because of the butcher work they did to the story. The game is average, a 5/10 is right.

I am incredibly dissapointed in this misdirected series that truly should have been a one-off with no sequel. Expand

This was such a difficult game to rate and people seem to be falling on both extremes, so my middling score might seem a transparent attempt at being rational or fair.

Anyway, I'm glad I played TLOU2. I'm not glad I bought the paltry special edition but that's my own fault for falling for an old trick.

The graphics on this game are completely top-tier for the PS4. The game really lets itself down, however, by confining you to playing in urban settings where nature has reclaimed the streets and skyscrapers. This leads to a homogenous environment that makes up a good 50% of the game. You wander around streets and derelict buildings that are difficult to differentiate. However, when you do get to the vibrant visual settings they really are breath-taking. I just wish they weren't so limited and confined to mostly flashbacks.

The gameplay will likely be the second-most divisive aspect of the game. When you examine the formula it's quite one-dimensional and familiar; enter area, eliminate enemies, scavenge for goods and find a way forward.

A major aspect that got in my way was that despite being a linear game, I found myself lost or lacking direction at quite a few points in the game. There is a small open-world area near the start of the game that you traverse on horseback, and this area in particular had me scratching my head a few times. There was a map available but you had to retrieve it from your inventory every time you needed it, making it cumbersome. This was likely to keep the HUD clear to improve immersion, but I'd have preferred a mini-map in the corner of the screen like many games do. There are many areas that look like you can explore them, only to be met with vehicles etc. blocking the way which could easily be climbed over in real life but not in the game for some reason.

I found myself getting frustrated at times with the camera being rigid and my character not moving how I wanted to even with the correct buttons pressed. One near-maddening experience I had a few times was when my accomplice would get in my way, or come running up to me only to knock into me, sending me a few inches outside of cover to be spotted by an enemy. This wasn't frequent, but noticeable.

The story is easily the most divisive and controversial aspect of the game. A lot of this is due to subjective taste, so should be taken as such. One thing I enjoyed was the revenge theme that underpinned most of the game. Many people were not happy at old characters leaving and new characters emerging, but I appreciated the attempt at moving forward rather than saturating characters and stories from the original. There were many complaints around the sexuality and race elements of characters, and I think these complaints ironically serve to prove that such characteristics are still in receipt of abuse and discrimination in modern times and need protecting. Overall I found the story to be the best part of the game as it becomes twisted and shows that separating good guys from the bad guys isn't always easy. The story allows for more experimentation and evolution than the actual gameplay, so I give praise for this.

I do have one major gripe with the story and that's how it is delivered. The game jumps backwards and forwards in time, with flashbacks happening within flashbacks. This makes the story feel a bit all over the place and not paced as well as it could. It seems like some of it was made up as they went along and shoehorned in wherever it could fit.

Let's synthesise this into a conclusion. This game was always going to upset many people and reviews were going to be plagued with bias and extremes. The gameplay struggles to move forward but the game itself is a step forward for the games industry, although not when Crunch and systematic abuse is involved during development.

Really, the game is a few hours too long, and truncating it could have resolved the issues with homogenous and tedium found in the environment.

Don't go into the game with massive expectations or demands. Just go with the flow and allow the game to take you on a journey which the first one did, which is a big part of why I believe it was so successful.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly:

    * The Good: The visuals of this game are breathtaking. The animations are mostly great. And while the core of gameplay is the same as the first game, there are noticeable improvements.

    * The Bad: This game ignores the fact that most people interested in it are 'the fans of the first game'. The pacing of the story is what I would only describe as 'weird on mushrooms'. And some major characters and their personalities are retconned in a big way.

    * The Ugly: The story is very clearly doctored to force-feed certain ideologies and beliefs and stereotypes which are different from the first game. Thing is, pushing ideas through the gaming medium happens all the time, but it is insulting when established characters of the prequel have to morph so they can fit the new narrative.

    Summary:
The visuals and the technical merits of the game make it really hard to score it below 5 out 10. But the story and pacing of it deeply wound the experience.
As a good friend of mine said, "I'd rate the story of this game, 2 lost fingers out of 10."
Also, as a side note, Naughty Dog games used to be on my list of 'buy without any questions'. After this game, they no longer are.

Многие видят её как The Last of Us 2, это категорически не правильно! Название игры The Last of Us: Part 2, подчеркиваю Часть 2.
Если бы не было The Last of Us в 2013 году, оценка была бы 9 или 10. Это как заставить поклонников Star Wars 77 - 83 годов возлюбить трилогию от Disney!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I rate a 7 solely for the fact that I see what they were trying to do with the story. It was a great idea in theory, but not in practice. They took a gamble and in my opinion, lost that bet. Oh and the gameplay, graphics, soundtrack, audio, and actor performances were unprecedented. Really good.

I like that they did not go with a traditional form of story telling. Instead of the typical “hero’s journey”, they did something completely different and I respect them for it. I loved the idea of a tragic ending where ultimately, no one wins. Our characters who we love give in to an emotion that we should all hate - revenge - and allow it to ruin their lives. A perfect testament to the human condition. It was not a typical feel good, story book ending. It resembled real life consequences of actions (in this case post apocalyptic).

    The negative:

Wow, this could have been so much better. The story was in fact a let down, considering what they could have done. After listening to Neil druckman talk about it on podcasts, it sounds like they made way too many revisions from the initial base. Their original ideas actually sounded way better than the final product. Playing as Abby was great, and again, I get what they were going for but it could have been done so much better. And they definitely did crow bar in some of their social ideology. Again, I respect that, but at what point is it pandering? I love giving certain groups of people platforms of recognition and empowerment but, it felt so forced.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was a big fan of the first Last of Us, but developer Naughty Dog made some drastic decisions in the story telling elements that, in my opinion, hurt this game. I actually liked the story in Part 2 and where it went, but to me it felt as if I had skipped a game or something. It felt like i was playing Last of Us Part 3, while getting to play flashbacks of the events of what should have been Last of Us Part 2 (Ellie and Joel/Abby's flash backs). Naughty Dog started the game off perfectly by throwing us into the events directly after Joel and Ellie escape the hospital and find a new life in Jackson, but it all gets jumbled by skipping 4 years into the future and attempting to piece together the events that brought us to where we are in this game.

In Part 2 within the first 2 hours we see the main character from the first game, Joel, die at the hands of a new character Abby and her "friends" (WLF). This initially was shocking since i managed to not get it spoiled for me, but it became a recurring theme throughout the whole game that got dry and made me detached from the new characters. In this game we play as Ellie, which i was fine with, but the developers made the mistake of allowing the players to watch all of Abby's "friends" die at the hands of Ellie BEFORE the players got to form an understanding of who they are, which ultimately made playing Abby's portion of the story a bit unnecessary since her WLF "friends" seem to serve no other purpose than to die, giving Abby an excuse to wanna kill Ellie. From a players perspective i got extremely bored of the game telling me that this person killed that person so now the character we play as has to go kill the person who killed the person they liked.

I get the point the Devs where trying to tell here: There are two sides to every story. However, trying to explain Abby's perspective felt jumbled as well. It turns out her dad was the guy who could have made the cure and was going to operate on Ellie, but was killed by Joel when he took Ellie away from the hospital. I feel the Devs did a good job explaining why Abby hated Joel and why she killed him, but I feel it would have been better to just go at it chronologically and not introduce her by painting her in negative way. I feel they should have allowed the players to get attached to her by playing the events leading up to her killing Joel instead of justifying it in flashbacks.

Also something that bothered me was NO CHARACTERS DIE TO INFECTED OR BECOME INFECTED. Like what a huge story point to just not even use. In the original game we see Henry and Sam and the complexities of suffering (Henry kills himself) due to the loss of his brother by Infection. In Part 2 there was some random enemy towards the end of the game that gets bitten by a Clicker as a way for Ellie to escape, but thats it folks. Everyone in this game either dies from a bullet or from being stabbed/hit, which after Joel's death, via a golf club, began to feel repetitive, and made me numb whenever i saw another character die in a similar manner. They didn't matter and i shouldn't get attached to them since they serve less purpose than a 3-D rendered set piece that doesn't do much to connect with the payer or drive the story further.

Not everything in this game was all bad. The gameplay is relatively the same, but with some quality of life changes. The player can now use grass to hide from enemies kinda like in assassins creed. Characters can now go prone on top of crouching. New attachments to weapons such as silencers and explosive arrows allow for some really satisfying ways for players to approach each new situation. Graphically this game feels next gen. Something as simple as walking and tracing back your footsteps in the snow really impressed me, but there are some frame rate issued to be had when in grass green areas kinda like breath of the wild had in the forest sections, but its doesn't take away from how gorgeous this game looks. The sound track is ridiculously good and the sound design is better than ever. Simple things like character voices getting harder to hear when in different rooms or listening to clickers nasty noises when sneaking past them sound top notch especially with headphones. I really enjoyed the guitar controls too

Also there were two new characters, Lev and Yara, that felt very well written and interesting for the player to engage with. They are Scars/Seraphites, which are essentially religious cultists. Lev is a Trans male who wants to continue his religious practices, but is critical of it when she felt like a he. No judgment there, but it lead to some interesting story elements about attachment and discovery. Most of the other new characters didn't really stand out as well as these 2 did.

When people talk about the first game they mention how good the story was. In part 2, I felt the story jumped around too much and characters died too often in similar ways, which left me overall disappointed 6/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Se me hace muy dificil expresar lo que siento por este juego luego de haberlo esperado por tantos años, y por sobre todo, la sensacion de satisfaccion que el "The Last of Us" original me habia dejado.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. At the end of The Last of Us 1 I killed for Ellie. Me, not Joel. The doctor who was killing her for a greater good surrendered to me and I shooted at him without a second of hesitation just to save my little girl's life. Months later I was still thinking in that, asking my real self questions I've still asking sometimes. I ended loving Ellie and her relationship with Joel (me). She was my "kiddo".

Now this feeling is gone like ashes in the wind. I've witnessed her happily murder hundreds of people in a pointless journey for a fuzzy revenge proposal. I really don't care at all she being LGTBI. I strongly encourage games and movies to visibilize LGTBI people. People complaining about that are just a bunch of **** And, in the glorious first promising moments of the TLOU2, I really enjoyed the developers including such circumstance.

However, in this journey, Ellie's motivations aren't clear, the surrounding characters lack in depth and the game does not produce any emotional connection with them. The oriental you-die-for-sure guy or Ellie's partner (I didn't bother to learn their names) are just plain.

I really liked the dead of Joel in the beggining of the story. Really. I also I think is not a reason strong enough to turn my kid Ellie into the fusion of John Wick, a T-800 and some random revenge-seeker Liam Neeson's character.

Then I hated every second played with Abby. Maybe if she just have had Joel killed but not tortured... but it was way too much since the beginning. She was right in killing Joel, but I wanted her dead. Hands down.

It is like if, playing as Aragorn in the battle of the Pelenor fields, you would stop the movie for 10 hours to show the poor and pitifull youth of Sauron some years ago to empathize with him.

I'm sorry because I really tried to, but I only found TLOU2 OKish. As Game of Thrones discovered one year ago, bad and rushed storytelling could ruin the best of the plots.

Oh, and I hated, REALLY HATED to must kill the dogs and the few enemies that surrendered to me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I played the game and would tell you that it is technically solid from a graphic and most of the game play is ok. If you never played the first game you probably will give this game a solid review but based on playing the first game would say that some of the character choices didn't fit with how the first game ran. The story also show from the trailers that they where going in multiple directions with this game and left me feeling disjointed. I currently don't see myself buying a third game of the last of us part 3 if they have one only way I would buy a third game is if they did a prequel like red dead redemption 2 where they cover the life of Joel and tess and bill and Marlene and Tommy and Ellie mother covering the last 20 years even if it includes the comic. If you have never played the fist one probably better to play part 2 first or else you probably won't feel to good about part to these are just my opinions so don't let my review stop you from buying or renting the game. The problems arise mainly with the story and its pacing. Joel's death 2 hours into the game was a big turn off and it only went down hill from there. The new characters are barely fleshed out or give little reason to actually care about their stories. Overall I want to give this game ever chance to impress me and be open minded. He played at a high level, but it felt like a simple one. For me, the world of this game has remained only in the first part. The worst thing is that if Sony continues to maintain such a policy, then perhaps we should fear for the continuation of other excellent titles. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m writing my review here because both subreddits of the last of us have become both massive circlejerks and it’s really hard to voice out your opinion without being attacked.

I think this game did a lot of things right. The graphics are top notch and although the game mechanics seem slightly dated it rarely took away from the experience and thrill while playing. Even the story had its good moments despite being a pretty predictable revenge plot whose moral of the story is: “Revenge Bad”. With a few tweaks here and there and it would have definitely be a 10/10 game.

With that being said, there a few points while playing where I felt absolutely miserable. I have no problem with Abby’s figure or character at all but after she killed Joel it just made it really hard for me to have any connection with her. So playing through it for 10 hours seemed like drag. Also when Ellie coming back to try and kill Abby again and losing everything in the process seemed a little excessive and didn’t make any sense whatsoever. I get both characters who gave in to revenge lost a lot but I think Ellie lost far more than Abby has which seemed just really off putting. Of course if Ellie did kill Abby there wouldn’t be a point to the story it’ll just be a borderline misery-porn where nothing is learnt or nothing has a point.

Of course the elephant in the room and I think why most people were upset was Joel’s death. But personally, I don’t have a problem with him dying at all. From the story standpoint, it didn’t make sense for anyone else to get killed for a story to be told. The problem is the way it was executed. He didn’t go out with a bang or protecting the people he cares for, he died in such a pathetic and helpless manner. In my opinion, Joel deserved a better death than that. It was more like he was a plot device more than a character which is such a disrespect to probably one of the most well written characters in the past decade. This isn’t the only instance where a good character gets killed in such a pathetic way: Jesse didn’t even get to fight back before he gets **** in the face. It’s pretty sad way to go when he was a good representation for Asians in gaming, as he wasn’t a walking stereotype.

Many people claim there was an agenda in this game. Personally, I don’t have a problem with it. I like that Abby is a physically strong female character and I like the lgbtq+ representation. It’s good and progressive. If your giving a bad review based on such trivial things you should probably just grow up. There is some pretty sad excuses for representation in this game though. The main examples are a Latino guy named Manny who repeats the word “Pendejo” And “Puta” like a damn Pokemon. It’s just a pretty dated stereotype for a Latino guy to be hot tempered and say those words, so it pretty sad for a game to tries so hard to be progressive to make such a mishap. Overall, I think this game isn’t as bad as people made it out to be not is it as good and that’s such a shame for a Follow up to one of the best games of the past decade.

I personally didnt like the gameplay from the first game thinking it was too simple, and this game does nothing to change my mind about that. Secondly, while the story isnt as bad as other people have said on here, its not that great either. Without spoilers its hard to say why but certain characters motivations dont strike me as believable at points, with the most obvious wrinkle happening mid game that almost lost me completely. It feels like the game goes out of its way to bash you over the head with its themes of how "an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" over and over again that it losses all meaning in the end. And it certainly cant make up for the most obvious dumb decision that happens in the middle of the game. However, the story still holds up ok at the end of the game. The performances of each individual character is wonderfully done, even if the writing cant equal up to the same calibur. And the graphics here are probably tied in my opinion with Ghosts of Tsushima as being the best on the console, and of this generation in general. However the story needed to be alot less heavy handed and include a lot less bad WTF moments throughout the story. I'd still recommend it but dont expect the same gaming world changing impact that the first game had. Expand

The Video game is a technical achievement and beautiful to look at. But if you're invested in the story, its really underwhelming and dissatisfying. However there are great moments in it to marvel and potentially great ideas that do not seem to land/work. Its aesthetically groundbreaking but the plot and character development really makes it hollow and pointless.

The enemy AI is painfully dumb even on hard, at one-point Dina squats down in a doorway at the knees of an enemy, he didn't see her and couldn't move through the doorway because of her. This just breaks the world and indeed drags you out of the immersion in a bad way. The combat system gets a bit tedious after repeatedly dodging and mashing the square button or creeping up behind an enemy and choking them out repeatedly, not to mention the jump button only works in certain areas.

A narrative breaking moment is getting Joel to forget all his survival skills by giving out is real name to Abby, this totally contradicts Joel's character from the first game. I derived no joy from playing Abby for nearly 10 hours, I had no investment in this character whatsoever and she overburdened the story in a needless way. I'm sure Naughty Dog once said that you only get to play as Ellie, that is quite deceitful of them and no wonder reviewers were not allowed to speak about certain parts of the game. All I wanted to do for those 10 hours was get back to playing Ellie.

While the game did display fantastic graphical vistas and some varied combat options Part II lacks the sensitively emotional style that made the original epic such a masterpiece.

The Last of Us: Left Behind DLC user score is 8.1 on metacritic which proves players didn't have a problem will Ellie's sexuality so using Bigotry as an excuse for bad reviews is used as a shield against criticism and contradictory to actual reality. The overwhelming majority of gamers don't care that a character is gay or straight, gamers care about the entertainment value, they care if the game was good and if the game was fun to play.

Yes, the story is awful. They layer tropes within tropes, with my favorite example being the child who runs away from the cult because they are being forced into a marriage with an older man... but don't want to because they are... transgendered? I am all for equality and consider myself somewhat of a social justice warrior IRL, but this just feels like they had a story put together and then decided to inject hot-button social issues into every plot point where they could fit them. The problem though is that even if the story didn't include the SJW overload, it would still be a mediocre story with an unsatisfying ending.

At the end of the day though, the fact is that this game is a masterpiece in level design, gameplay and graphics. If you could skip all cut-scenes and just have an adventure in post-apocalyptic Seattle hunting down bad guys and zombies while scrambling for scant supplies, the game would stand among one of the best games of the year.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A lot has been said about this game. The only thing I can do after beating it is agreeing with the fact that it’s bad. Gameplay is fine but identical to the first one. The feeling is that the game drags itself so much over its welcome, due to decent but highly repetitive mechanics and level design. The first one had on its side a shorter length, and a much, much better storyline and characters. This part 2 goes in every single wrong direction it could, when it comes to these two aspects. It starts flushing away the most fundamental thing that EVERYONE wanted to see: the relationship between Joel and Ellie, killing off the first, and transforming the second into an unlikable sociopathic dumbass. All the other characters are either destroyed and marginalized (Tommy) or just forgettable in the best case, including Abby. I’ve seen many hating her so much. I couldn’t do even that. She just doesn’t make me feel anything. She’s so bi-dimensional that DoomGuy expresses infinite more personality with a couple of grunts. What made me feel extremely annoyed though is the way the writers try to trick the player in liking her with any sort of subterfuge, because oooh she plays with doggos, oooh look how she saves zebras, oooh look how she saves kids, oooh look how many friends she has, she must be the best person in the world. Well no, she is not. She is just a terribly written character (together with all her besties), with 0 character development and an atrociously boring and stupid storyline that goes nowhere and simply wastes your time. Even the LGBT representation is done much better in the first game (Bill and his side story are so well written, so sweet and at the same time so bitter. Definitely one of the best parts of the first game). Here things are just thrown in just for sake of politics, decontextualized, stereotyped and simply uninteresting. What I wanted to see in the game are Ellie and Joel, how they’re coping with the end of civilization (the best part of this whole thing is the flashback in the museum), I wanted to see developments with the infection, I wanted to see how humanity is surviving. I wanted lore, emotions, world building, character development. What I’ve got instead is Abby literally taking it in the ass in one of the worse sex scenes I’ve ever watched.

Giving it a 5 because of the graphics. Seriously, I can’t understand how were they able to achieve this on an obsolete hardware such as PS4. This is going to be the benchmark for the new console generation, together with RDR2 and Death Stranding. And, hopefully, Cyberpunk 2077.

    Please CDProjekt, don’t disappoint us.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The production values of this game are top notch. Graphics, environments, music and acting are great. One of the best of the current generation. Unfortunately the game is narrative driven and the writing is shoddy at best. The story is structured poorly, the characters are shallow and act in incomprehensible fashion. My idea of a great game is to be put the player in a world to make decisions and see how they play out. In this game I’m put into the world to do what the writers want, without real agency. For a big portion of the game I’m forced to act in a way I don’t want to, and even worse, play a character I don’t want to play with.

The gameplay itself is very similar to the original, almost no innovation, and it feels both unfair and illogical at times. It is not fair that I’m against a dozen NPC:s with a gun, but each time I can get only 1-2 billets from them. The scarcity is artificial and does not make sense. Playing with the Abby character, a solider for several years, is too similar to playing with Ellie. For some reason she learns about crafting, gun improvements and close combat skills only on the days I’m playing the character, the exact days when Ellie is in town. Unrelated to my rating, I find Sony/Naughty Dog PR and marketing decisions suspicious. Not allowing the reviewers to talk about the whole game and misleading gamers on the content of the game was not cool, almost like a bait-and-switch. Given the game they made, I kinda understand, but can not approve.
