The Last of Us was my favorite game for the better part of a decade. However modest a title that is, in the time between its release and the release of The Last of Us Part II, it was only ever truly challenged by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. I wondered for a long time if there would ever be a sequel, all while simultaneously satisfied with the story that The Last of Us told; a powerful, moving, and evocative story filled with some of the best character development I've ever seen, a heart-wrenching climax complete with a moral dilemma to truly fracture the soul, and an ending that managed to strike the perfect balance of closure and invitation for continuation. As if that wasn't enough though, the Left Behind DLC was equally moving; a worthy counterpart and beautiful supplement to what was - in total - nothing short of a narrative masterpiece almost by an objective standard.

When Naughty Dog announced that it was making The Last of Us Part II, the Internet was suddenly ablaze with rumors, speculation, and fan theory. So many were excited to see what the writers had in store for the characters we'd come to love so dearly. I was equally excited, but also wary for the sake of the IP. The studio did everything they could to satisfy fans starving for more information: teaser trailers, cinematics, sample gameplay, and more. The community surrounding this IP not only loved it, but they also trusted the studio's writers to do it justice; a real rarity and welcome experience in the increasingly tumultuous and predatory industry that is AAA video game development. There was deep, unified support for one of the few good remaining studios, and it was all but certain that lightning would strike twice.

Only months prior to one of the most anticipated releases in gaming history, the Internet was once again ablaze. Only this time, it was bad news. Headlines appeared about major leaks and spoilers. Apparently, conflict within the studio had come to a breaking point and now spilled over into the public. Out of love for the IP, I went into an almost ridiculous state of Internet self-quarantine. I avoided any whisper about The Last of Us Part II for months. I had waited years for this game and I was determined to have a genuine gratifying experience playing it. I binged the game in all my hours of free time until I finished it last night...

No sequel or continuation - movie, book, video game or otherwise - has ever been so personally disappointing to me as has The Last of Us Part II.

No sequel or continuation - movie, book, video game or otherwise - has ever retroactively made me think so much less of the original.

I wish I could un-play The Last of Us Part II and forget it ever existed. At least then I would still love the beautiful story that was The Last of Us. Am I being melodramatic? Probably. It's only a game... but that's just it. It didn't used to be. At least not for me.

My advice may sound discordant, but there are reasons for it. If you love The Last of Us, do not play The Last of Us Part II. Don't stop there though. If you love The Last of Us, do not read, watch, or otherwise seek out anything about what happens in The Last of Us Part II. However, if you find this to be undoable, if you cannot resist and you must know the story, then you must actually play the game (ideally only once the price has bottomed out) and do so without spoiling any part of it for yourself beforehand. This is why, as much as I want to vent, I haven't written anything about the game's contents here. I can do that separately. This game is a betrayal of the story and the characters you love, by the developer that gave them to you seven years ago. All I can say is I don't see myself buying another game written or directed by Neil Druckmann or any of the writers for the Last of Us Part II. In fact, if I didn't know better I would ask who he stole The Last of Us from. The more I reflect on what transpires in The Last of Us Part II, the more it would seem that its predecessor might have just been a beautiful fluke; lightning in a bottle.

Everything about The Last of Us Part II other than the story ranges from good to amazing. The developers should be proud. Unfortunately, these things can't save a game that hinges entirely on its narrative when that narrative is so utterly broken that it disrespects what made the IP so beautiful in the first place.

If this isn't enough to convince you to completely ignore this game's existence, then I would encourage you to listen to any other spoiler-free player reviews you can find from people who were in your position before playing the game. The established critics are predictably out of touch. There is no "high art" aspect to this game, not even if you squint and turn your head sideways. If you love The Last of Us then this game is not worth playing. If you love The Last of Us, then The Last of Us still has no part two.

Gameplay is the best Naughty Dog Has Yet to offer , and one of the best i've played
Graphics are so darn good , so much details ,
    Level Design is impressive,
it basically takes most previous ND games aspects and boosted them to a whole new level
    Just Awesome ....

But what game lacks here is a proper story that matches the level of it's predecessor,
i'm fine with that "character's death" and game was going okay till the second half of it,
game really did not sell me the story of other characters, their relation with others is so shallow and full of cliches .. and did not make the effort to made the proper impact on me and make me sympathize with this character , i've seen some anime and films selling me the same story idea in a better way.

for me .. game feels like separate individual parts that has been glued together ,
if the game has been made into a different order it might have been looked better.

So it's Basically not the sequel that TLOU 1 deserves.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The graphics are immaculate. The gameplay is fine. There isn't anything beyond amazing here. It's good, but there isn't anything to rave over. The story is atrocious. There are a lot of plot holes and you can see where the writers had to write themselves into or out of a situation. Specific characters do things they wouldn't, but if they don't, there's no game. It's unfortunate.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (Light spoilers) The gameplay, the characters, the graphics, and the visuals of the game were stellar. The first half had me on the edge of my seat story-wise as well, and I was so excited, and then we played 10 hours as Abby. Then, I saw all of the cheap ploys to try and make us like Abby and dislike Ellie. Have Ellie kill dogs and Abby pet them etc, but that doesn’t change the heart of each character. Just because a child calls Abby a good person doesn’t mean she is one. It shifts from a fantastic start to a bunch of cheap shots instead of quality writing. You can’t make an evil hearted villain and a sympathetic one all in one go like that. I saw what they were trying to do and can appreciate it, but it didn’t land properly. The game is better than average but doesn’t live up to it’s predecessor story-wise. It often reads like torture porn (I love angst fic and this exceeds the worst of what I’ve read in this field). I wish it was better, I really wanted it to be. The first half I was absolutely in love and then it just dipped, all the way to the less than stellar ending. I still enjoy the game. Some parts were so fantastic I’ll never forget them, and so I can’t drop the game in its entirety, but nonetheless I was a little disappointed. I do still suggest you play the game through on your own, but it’s not the masterpiece I was led to believe it was. 3/5 or 7/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finished the game. It was good. The developers really tried to make the player understand Abby’s side of the story. They wanted players to have a view of both Ellie’s and Abby’s story. It was great. But playing as what the players view as the “villain” for more than 5 hours is what made the game look like it was telling Abby’s side of the story rather than Ellie’s story. I think they should’ve created more events for the main protagonists (Joel and Ellie). Overall the gameplay, graphics and music are as impressive as the first game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. in order to fix this game and actually make the story work all they had to do was replace Joel with Dina and make Joel die a heroic death saving Ellie from one of the factions from the story while in pursuit for Dina's killer making Joel's death so much more impactful to then go and avenge both Ellie's lover and father figures deaths. but at the same time without turning to the killer's point of view so it's just a story from Ellies' perspective. also, make Ellie meet lev and he's older sister and work them into Ellies' story as they felt like a good edition from a character perspective but need plot tweaks. that's it really, the game itself is visually stunning and the gameplay felt really good but unfortunately, the story denies any success from everyone else's hard work to make the game achieve legendary status. The ending would need to change so that Ellie gets her revenge which gives the player meaning to carry on to the end.

personally I couldn't care less about the inclusion of LGBTQ characters as long as it feels natural and doesn't feel like they were placed into a game just for the sake of ticking boxes. As a gamer, I don't want to see political agendas in a game I just want to enjoy the story/gameplay for example if Abby's dad was a bodybuilder and she wanted to take after her dad then that's more natural and would make sense after her loss but currently, I can't think of any reason why she would become the hulk in a world of harsh survival and scarce resources.

The mediocre: the stealth levels and scavenging got super repetitive, Seattle got stale, and Abby's friends were pretty superficially characterized. They could have done more to make the game dynamic. Environmental puzzles that are more than finding an open window. Zombie dogs. Making the wolves more competent. More vehicle mechanics and levels.

The bad: Killing off Joel at the beginning after I invested so much in his character made the game so much worse than it could have been. The heart of the first game was the bond between Joel and Ellie and any story that put that at the core of the game would be better. Make Jackson under attack; exile Joel; have scientists show up looking for a cure. Anything with them, because Abby's story never rivaled the emotional stakes of Joel and Ellie's. The game expects you to identify with her and I just never did. Second, the supporting characters are almost all underdeveloped (Isaac, Jessie, Maria, Tommy, Dina). Third, the ending is terrible. Introducing a new purely sadistic group at the end was lazy and Ellie not taking revenge on Abby was totally inconsistent with her character.

All together, still enjoyed this game and couldn't put it down because of how much I cared about the fate of Ellie. If there was a solid story it could have been great.

One thing I can say that is good is the graphics and artistry that Naughty Dog did but other than that I don't see the appeal to finish this game. From the lies that they published to the actual gameplay itself does not really satisfy me as a gamer. The plot and this random character you get to play as (Abby) has no place in last of us and now you get to see her in the second one? What? Sorry for the rant and the spoilers but the game doesn't live to its expectations. I mean realistically game or movie series don't usually follow up well with the original storyline but this one is astonishingly bad. Why the fudge are we playing as Abby and how can meta critic and other recognizable gaming review sites rank it this high? This just baffles me. With all this negativity there are some good features about this game though. One of them being exposing the LGBT community into video games, but it seems like this game used it as a marketing strategy. Another thing is that it obsesses a lot of emotional and real life situation that many experienced in real life and this really attracted me from the start. My final thing is that the physics and controlling the character is pretty accurate and exciting. Combat is fun and it didn't change and I salute them for that. Overall this game has more cons than pros and a game like this that changed my perspective of gaming really let me down. I hope anyone reading this feels the same or if you don't thats fine. I am glad there are some people enjoying this game but I am not one of those people unfortunately. Why couldn't we play as Joel till his death or his brother Tommy? I'll leave it at that. Thanks. I have extremely mixed feelings about this game. I did not enjoy the story (partially the things mentioned above, partially dislike of writing decisions), which is what drags this game down for me. I loved the technical things, like the gameplay, the bosses, atmospheric settings etc, but it's not enough to save a story-driven game. Having bonded so much to Ellie and Joel's relationship, I found it hard to be engaged for Abby's part of the game despite that's what the game wants us to do. I UNDERSTAND the game and the ending, my opinion comes down to personal preference.

My favourite thing about TLOU 2 was the relationship between Ellie and Dina, which made the experience much more enjoyable than it otherwise would have been. I am a bi woman, so I appreciated a game of this size going all in with a wlw relationship. Ellie's flashbacks were wonderful and very touching.

I went in blind with this game, TLOU is my favourite game of all time and I have anticipated this for so long. I avoided all leaks, having only seen official trailers and gameplay footage. Unfortunately I ended up quite disappointed, but I still think the game is worth playing through. It is a technical/visual masterpiece, but unfortunately not as a whole including the story, in my opinion.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I heard that when the first game was about Love, this was themed around hate, so this was something that I thought about a lot during my playtime. It is hard to get someone to explore negative emotions and come out feeling good, and I feel that a lot of that this game was getting at was that death is painful to deal with, we don't all go out in meaningful ways.

I felt that there was a bit of a gameplay lull in the middle similar to Alien: Isolation where after you get powerful and reach a climactic point, everything resets to the new character which is a little unsatisfying.

Gameplay-wise, I felt that the rarer infected functioned a lot better and were more interesting than the first game and the newer variants were interesting. A big issue for me in the first one was simplistic, repeating puzzles. I feel that this game had some more interesting and original mechanics for puzzles which I appreciated. I wasn't as big a fan of the brute type human enemies or the chase scene, horse escape that felt a little too much like Uncharted for me.

I think the takeaway message is loss sucks but it's something we have to deal with in life, exploring the emotions and the way that hate destroys so much around us with no real catharsis is a bold move, and I did feel myself getting emotionally invested.

Overall I think that the game might have been too long to make it's a point well, but I advise people to see it through to the end. If you are at all on the fence, I suggest waiting for a price drop.

Don't make a game about vengeance and violence if you're going to skip the part trauma part. In interviews that surfaced after the release of the game Neil mentioned removing some scenes that explored Ellie's PTSD because "it didn't fit into the flow of the game" and that's honestly idiotic. The game has 28h+, it's split in two halves and it has lots of flashbacks. There was enough time to do character development right. If you think showing trauma ruins the rhythm of your game then you shouldn't tell these kinds of stories @Neil.

Not exploring Ellie's trauma and doubts better made this a very tone deaf game. So she's fine murdering dozens of people who have nothing to do with her quest for revenge and only struggles with the ones that do? This should've been explored way better. There were some entries in her journal that somewhat tapped into that, but not near enough. This is honestly something that should've been "show not tell".

Anyways, even with all those problems it's still fun to play and that's honestly what I look for in games. I've played and enjoyed games that have worse stories.

I was always going to play this game regardless of reviews, cause normally I don't pay them much attention. Alas, here we are and I'm leaving a review.... oh how the mighty have fallen...ANYWAYS lets get into the game. coming off of what was maybe Naughty Dog's most successful endeavor (aside from uncharted I guess).

I came into TLOU2 with high hopes that were deflated partially due to what I found out in the leaks however, I wasn't going to let that stop me from still experiencing it first hand. If I was going to be disappointed I wanted to be absolutely sure. As I played thru the first few hours I enjoyed the gameplay, the graphics, the beautiful scenery, hell I even enjoyed picking up the collectible cards that had super heroes on them. The accessibility options for the game are top notch. But this damn story!!?!? just all over the place. Ellie is demonized while were forced to try and empathize with Abby, who is no saint whatsoever by the way. actually her arc is already finished within the first few hours of the game! she gets exactly what she wants in a most convenient fashion. and just when you think you get to exact your revenge.... We are treated to 12+ more hours of why we should all respect this other character and demonize Ellie for......well for essentially killing a dog, in which we had no choice cause it was literally self defense, and well... there wasn't any other choice. skipping to the ending where as I played I felt like I had about 3 false endings... Ellie still cant cope and HAS to exact revenge...........but nahhhhhhhhh. just as you feel like, here it comes, here is the revenge literally EVERYONE is waiting for.......flop, she allows Abby to sail off into the mist while she gets to return to NOTHING! and no... i'm not a close minded bigot of any sort. My problems don't have anything to do with the inclusion of LGBTQ characters. it's the **** job they did trying to justify half of the characters who were just as bad if not worse than Joel, Ellie, or Tommy. they spent so much time trying to make Abby likable and at no point does that ever resonate. i found myself wanting to know more of the seraphites and the prophet more than anyone else in the game. yet their abandoned and just labeled as crazy bigots.

My only issue about the story is how Joel is played out as some horrible man who selfishly took Abby's dad and prevented the potential for a vaccine. A man who, selfish or not, prevented the fireflies from killing Ellie without her consent. Yeah she's mad because she would've sacrificed herself for the cause, but that doesn't change the fact that they had decided her life for her. What's the point of saving humanity if humanity doesn't care about you? No say in the matter regarding your own life. No last words. No farewells to the guy who just went through hell to get her there. And there's Ellie. A girl who tried so hard to build a relationship with Joel despite his efforts to keep it strictly professional. She slowly won him over. Even ran off and made a huge scene when Joel got Tommy to agree to take her. Made him guilty that he was abandoning her and didn't care. Refused his offer to turn around. Said they could go wherever he wanted afterwards. Showed no signs of wanting to die. She won his heart, someone was going to just end her life without any say, and she hates him for it? That's brutal. I understand Abby's anger because it was her father, but she gave her blessing to her dad when he couldn't answer the question if he could decide that for his own daughter. This is a story justifying their revenge and trying to convince you that they're better. All while discrediting the actual good that Joel did. If their actions are justified because Ellie would've agreed, why couldn't they wait one damn day to sit down with Joel and Ellie to discuss this? You know, instead of deciding her fate like it's ok because it's for the "greater good" Based off the responses from the new Abby fans, this game has taught me that if an outbreak like this ever happened and you find out you're immune, don't tell anyone if you want to live. Too many people are ok with killing you without say to save their own life. Expand

I love my playstation, and i have been using playstation brand for almost 20 years and of course i love naughty dog for bringing masterpiece games for playstation users for a decade. I dont know how many times i have finished last of us part 1. I bought it for both ps3 and ps4. Also bought all the uncharteds for both ps3 and for ps4 again. I put this information right here to show that i am in love with what naught dogs make.

Last of us part 2 is a marvel on technological level. Every minute of it on my screen looked astonishing. Details are over the charts. It might be the most "quality" game ever. I liked the half part of the story too. I love Joel but he had to go. He was a villain in the first game and he still was a villain in the second game. He doomed humanity for his selfish agenda. So no i am not mad about Joel dying in a gruesome way. I am mad about naught dogs trying to lecture us with its agenda. I dont play games to listen to your agenda no matter which which part you are serving. It is a 10/10 game but i am giving it a 5 so that naughty dogs might see that we are not buying their products to listen to their real life politics.

We didn't get to see her personality shine at all through all the anger and revenge. The characters are well written but just not interesting and it doesn’t help that neither is the story. It all revolves around a certain event, as if the event itself is going to shape the whole story like the tlou1 did with Joel and Ellie’s relationship. It doesn’t. Before this game came out all of the previews and interviews made it seem like the story was going in a certain direction and it’s really disappointing the way it turned out. It would’ve been nice to something maybe a little more lighthearted especially with everything going on in a world where there doesn’t seem to be very much hope nowadays. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off I just want to say never have I ever in my life been so angry to leave a review on a game. There are so many choices in the story that were made that literally butchered everything. I also want to make something clear. The fact that there is this thing happening to where if you don't like the game it's because you're a bigot or you have anything to do with LGBT is so annoying to me. Yes there are definitely people who are hating the game only for that reason but for me personally I absolutely do not care that they included that in the game. It does not matter because that is not what makes the story terrible to me. Now to get into the details here is my problem with the game and why I am so angry. First off why would they decide to use Joel as something to just further the plot and use him as a plot device. It is an injustice to his character whom which we all love. The only reason why that scene was heartbreaking at all is because it was a character we loved and had been waiting to see for 7 YEARS just taken away from us almost immediately. Other than that it was just so unemotional and there was nothing else that really made you feel in that moment. If they wanted to kill joel that badly then they shouldve done it differently and maybe i don't know wait a little bit before they killed him. Also what Nuaghty Dog seemed to forget is we wanted so badly to play as Joel and Ellie again and we all thought that that was what we were going to get but no we did not. It would have been way better if they killed Tommy and made Ellie and Joel go on the revenge spree if they wanted to keep that same storyline. Now getting in to the main game. I played as Eliie for so many hours thinking I was going to get revenge because in all honesty thats all I wanted. I did not feel a single drop of remorse any time we killed someone. Personally i don't know why naughty dog thought we would. And then at the end of the three days they ended up killing Jesse while then FORCING us to play as Abby, Joel's killer, FOR 10 HOURS was the most annoying thing ever that made me feel so damn angry. Throughout the time I was playing as her I treated it as a damn speedrun and it was just something I wanted to get over with. Not once throughout those 10 hours did I smile, laugh or feel anything for Abby. Why would they try to force her on us and essentially make us love her. I do not csre for her at all. So we go through all of that just so we can see her end up shooting tommy and Jesse and then the game does the 2nd worse thing in the entire game. THEY MADE US FIGHT ELLIE AS ABBY. Why on Earth would they think that was a good idea. Everytime Abby died i was legit just so happy with it and I wished that's where it ended. But no the game continued and I was so emotionally and physically drained. And then they show us Ellie and Dina living om the farm and i still could not even enjoy that. I was still so angry I could not even enjoy seeing Eliie happy. All I wanted was for the game to be over but no they still give us 3 more hours left to olay. I just ran through as much of it as I could. I did not try at all in the encounters I just did whatever I needed to. And now the the worse thing they decided to do was let Abby live. We did that dramatic fight scene just to feel so unsatisfied. Actually we played 30 hours just to feel unsatisfied. All for what, just to set up a third game that if we have to olay as Abby again most people are never going to touch it? Just to recap, We as players lost Joel, Ellie lost Joel, She also lost dina and her baby which was basically her family, Jessie died, Tommy got crippled and blind from one eye, and to top it off Ellie gets stuck with ptsd and has nothing in the end. Literally nothing. Meanwhile Abby gets to go live happily ever after with Lev. Why did they just get rid of all the characters we loved and make Ellie lost everything. If they were trying to send a message on how violence isn't the answer or revenge isn't that answer but yet Abby dedicated her whole entire life to getting revenge. Why does she get to get away with this and Ellie loses. Not only that , but it made no sense for Ellie to even leave Dina to go find her. You would think she'd just move on at that point. I would much rather have that happen then seeing Eliie literally lose everything and everyone while knowing Abby gets to go be happy. In conclusion that is why the storyline is absolutely garbage. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had never played the Last of Us but had heard good things about that game, so I didn't want to miss out on this one. Presumably there were a lot of folks like me who were expecting a similar experience. What we get instead is a hodgepodge game with no sense of direction and an overriding theme all the time - revenge! Both the protagonists on this game are so driven by the sense of revenge that it just gets tedious after a while playing this game. The only thing that kept me going was the urge to explore the world. Boy does the story and narrative make it hard to do that. All said, this game is definitely not a 10/10 as IGN's Jonathon Dornbush rated it. But it's not the worst either. The initial few hours are enjoyable, but once you start playing as Abby that's when things get bad. To me, RDR2 remains the gold standard when it comes to telling a story in a game. You could actually connect with the characters and that made the game so much more enjoyable. This game, not so much. So yeah, Naughty Dog, if you are reading this review, take this as feedback. It's not a bad game, it's just not the "masterpiece" IGN claims it is and which is probably what a lot of users were expecting too. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to like Last of Us part 2 more than I did. The game has so much going for it. Beautiful graphics, excellent animations, talented actors, an almost perfect part one story and character development, an excellent composer. None of these were used to any great effect in part 2. The story in part 2 or maybe the storytelling completely missed the mark. If the main theme was to understand that heroes and good guys are matter of perspective the storytelling utterly failed. Had I been introduced to Abby before she killed Joel I could have grown to like her. Then maybe when she did kill Joel, I would feel conflicted instead of hatred and scorn. The first part did so well at making you care about characters despite how little time was given to their story. I cared about Sara, Sam, Tess, Henry before they were lost to the harsh reality of the apocalypse. When playing as Abby I just wanted to speed through the story. Seeing all the people and characters I killed as Ellie did give me a tinge of regret (side note, I avoided killing any dogs until was forced to kill Alice which was disappointing). But for Abby I felt nothing. Most infuriating, I had to play as Abby when fighting Ellie. Literally I was shaking my head and muttering to myself “No...” repeatedly. Maybe thats a testament to how good the story was in part 1 and how lacking it is in part 2. Great storytelling can humanize the worst of villains. I am sad to say, the storytelling so missed the mark that what’s great about this game is dragged down by the storytelling. I must say also I feel manipulated by the trailers that character swapped Jessy for Joel. I was already willing to believe Joey was dead and would only appear in visions but when that scene arrived, and Jessy appeared I felt cheated out of another excellent performance from Ashley and Troy. Visually this game is stunning. Gameplay it’s okay. Storywise it’s abysmal. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After finishing this game for nearly 30hrs since day 1 I would say its a roller coaster experience. I never felt so emotionally drained after finishing a game. Everything was going great until you had to play as Abby, it just felt so wrong and forced. I understand what naughty dog is trying to do here but it just didn't happened. I never felt connected to Abby even they let us see her own perspective they even try to make Ellie's group look as the bad guys. I admire their courage to try something new or different though. Lastly after everything Ellie's have done she just let her go, its like a slap on my face but in my own view i think its still the best approach at that kind of situation but it could be a much better ending if Ellie didnt go after her in Santa Barbara. At times, the pacing of the game sucks too. I think its unfair to the developers to give such a very low rating given everything else was a masterpiece, from graphics, combat & gameplay. Aside from the story, my only complain is the repetitive QTEs. Overall its such a wonderful gaming experience. It was so brutal and ruthless! Some of the reviews are obviously bogus no one can finished the game right after its release. Maybe they're just bandwagons who saw the leak. Expand

So I tired very hard to like this game being such a huge fan of the first one I played it twice to see if I would enjoy it more the second time.... Not really honestly my rating is a 6.5 but it won’t let me. While I loved the graphics and some aspects of the game were very fun a lot of it just got old. Since most of the game takes place in Seattle everything looks the same so trying to remember where stuff is (hidden stashes) for extra play throughs is difficult. The quasi open world part of the game in the beginning was pretty fun. The fight system was better then the first but still had some problems and has been done better by 100s of other games. The worst part of this game is the story with massive plot holes and characters making choices that just doesn’t make sense. Also having us play as the other female character in this to try and see her side was boring she is not relatable or even a decent person. I found myself trying to rush thru her part to get back to Ellie even tho the game was trying very hard to make her the villain. The diversity in the game was a great idea but didn’t really work out the way I think naughty dog intended it was to on the nose and none of the characters were honestly likable anyone could of played their parts and it would have been the same story. Then the games ending made ZERO sense at all she had a flash back making her pursue Abby... then had another flash back after saving Abby telling her she needed to kill her then after she almost kills her and has her fingers bitten off she has another flash back telling her to let Abby go.... so she gave up everything she had to kill Abby then just let her go...lol. There is no closure in the game making the games replay ability very low which sucks since the first I could, and still can play over and over again. So graphics 10/10...combat solid 7 or 8 story a 4 it was bad....But if you enjoyed the game then you win honestly not worth 60 bucks to me but if I had bought it for 30 a year later I would probably feel better about it..... EDIT: So back months later to see if another play through would change my mind.... It didn’t.... Still a solid 6-6.5 at best. Expand

Some light environmental puzzles and a whole bunch of resource scavenging round out the simple but effective post apocalypse gameplay. These parts of the game are a big improvement over Part I. Unfortunately the story in Part II is much worse. The writers try very hard to make the audience sympathize with the new main character Abby but it just doesn't work. The story takes a lot of wrong turns, spends too much time on side quests, and really drags during the second half. Ellie sits out the two best boss battles in the game. tl;dr: the visuals, accessibility, and artistic designs are the only thing holding up this game from it’s disappointing storyline, poor story development, lack of interesting characters, and many missed opportunities to explore intriguing lore just so you can be forced into a new and unwanted perspective from one of the most uninteresting characters in gaming.

I have just finished the game and I am left with a sense of emptiness and frustration. For someone who had TLoU part 1 dearly in his heart, and who could not wait for the part 2 to come out, I have to say the experience was a punch in the guts.

I have just finished the game and I am left with a sense of emptiness and frustration. For someone who had TLoU part 1 dearly in his heart, and who could not wait for the part 2 to come out, I have to say the experience was a punch in the guts.

Taking all that melodrama apart, and after thinking with a clear head how would I rate this game is that not even the amazing graphics, extremely enjoyable game play and mechanics and the enormous appreciation for the level of detail in this game is enough to counterweight the really big flaw of the story, the character development, the order of the events and the unnecessary forced ideologies.

For Christ sake we the fans grew to love the connection that was developed between Joel and Ellie and within the first two hours of the second game you take that completely away. All the character development of Joel being a survivor is flushed into the toilet...

This game deserves all the praise for the people that took care about the animations, the graphics, the cut-scenes, the mechanics and the gameplay. Naughty dog has a quality signature in this regard.

However a big and I mean BIG failure this time was on the narrative and the story telling.

It is heartbreaking that such an amazing story from part one was completely ruined by the second part, and that this is pretty much unfixable. I now look at the story in a negative light.... Heck I am not even excited for the show being produced by HBO. Not anymore.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

I felt that this game did a lot wrong, but also did a lot right, the game play felt fun through most of the segments, the levels were interesting and in my opinion dynamic, however, one of the major problems with the game is by far the ending, a lot of people complain about the beginning of the game(which is justified in some aspects) but the worst damage is done by the ending. Before the ending of the game, i could really see myself coming back to play through again on new game plus but by the time i made it past the last segment with the new enemy faction and that miserable ending, i felt like going back to play this game would be a waste of time especially with the lackluster ending that makes you wonder why you decided to play the game in the first place. I'm not sure how the critic reviews are so high, guessing they didn't play till the end, the current user score of about 5 is fair I think as there is good parts to this game. The game is really well made with great graphics, sound and gameplay.

The main problem unfortunately is the biggest part of a game like this, the story. Firstly the characters are all pretty terrible and unlikeable, the worst is Abby and the game makes you play as her far too often and for too long. I mean you are playing as a character that you don't actually want to succeed, if the game actually let me kill her and skip all her parts (of course that can't happen) I would of enjoyed it a lot more as it was a chore to play as her. I know why the writers made as play as her so we could see that "just because you are bad guy doesn't mean you are bad guy" and that actions have consequences. She does at least have a character development arc unlike Ellie and is almost likeable at the end. Secondly the story is too long and didn't know when to end, it could and should of ended at the farm sunset scene. Would of probably given it a 7 if it had ended then. Lastly the story doesn't make sense (character motivations don't make any sense) and isn't enjoyable as it's just too dark and doesn't have any pay off at the end. You really have to wonder how it got point of being made, kind of like the last season of Game of Thrones. The world of the Last of Us is so interesting and has so much potential and it was all wasted, the mini stories in the collectibles were more interesting than the main story.

Overall I would say don't buy this game unless it's on sale for about £15 and you really want to see what the fuss is about.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of us Part 2 is a game that while fun, also gets rid of the amazing story the first game had. Sometimes the characters would do things they would never do in the first game, or they did things against themselves in earlier parts of the game. For example, in the first game Joel never trusts strangers and never tells anyone his name. In The Last of us Part 2, he tells Abby and her friends his name and where they live. Also, in the first half of the game, Tommy is hesitant to get revenge on Abby, but in the second half of the game, he pressures Ellie into getting revenge. The game also try’s to get you to sympathize with Abby, which I found annoying. The only reason I didn’t want her to die was because she had a kid. Some scenes felt out of place, such as the cutscene of Abby and Owen. In the end, Ellie spares Abby because she was also able to forgive Joel for taking her out of the hospital. As she returns home, Dina and JJ are gone, and she leaves Joel’s guitar behind. I have heard people say that her doing this was because she had to leave her relationship with Joel behind. I can understand that, but what I don’t understand is why Ellie killed many people, possibly hundreds and then when she found Abby she let her go. This game is fun, and while I’d recommend it, it’s not as good as what came before. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think the og The Last of Us is a good game, but nothing spectacular. So this is a unbias review of this one. The Gameplay is still very basic despite a generation gap between the two games. Jump and dogging is interesting at the moment, but then you will remember games that already had those things and did it so much better. Is very clear that this game is 100% focused on its story.

Story-wise The Last of Us Part Two is a rollercoaster of quality in both of it's "campaigns" Scenes like Joel's death and Abby finding Owen and Mel's corpses are powerful. On the other hand, the Scars are uninteresting and taking 24 hours to tell three days while the original had 16 hours to tell a year put the story down. This seven is entirely subjective because (outside of Joel's death, Abby's character and the Ending) every flaw the internet pointed out that didn't come from sexists and/or homophobics bothered me in my time with it. But I am willing to give those problems a pass because, to me, the highs of this game are far higher than any other Naughty dog game.

The amount of silly, avoidable mistakes they made, make you believe that the story was written over a week and not along 7 years it took to make a sequel. Story is filled with plot holes, characters contradict their nature to fit author's narrative all the time, some to the point that they become so shallow you can see right through them. But other than that I will never want to play this game over and over again like I did with the other games. It does make sense to have Joel die, and playing as Abby allows people to somewhat sympathize with her more, but I think that if they wanted us to care about Abby more we should have played her before Ellie, as well as the fact that that one line of dialogue where she is about to kill Dina saying, “Good”, was probably the worst planned parts in the whole game as it made people just despise Abby.

And Joel said "it's best not to think about that." This game makes you think about it whether you like it or not - I liked that part. The feeling of you feel like crap, I liked that.

I hated Dina and Ellie's relationship, which makes up a majority of the game, to where when Ellie leaves her at the theater I was relieved because it felt forced to promote SJW stuff when it could have been handled like Drake and Elena's relationship where it was funny and smart and sweet and great despite their circumstances, but they didn't want that and wanted to go straight for the "if you don't like this relationship than you're a homophobe" type of writing (which is called lazy writing). I actually liked Abby more than Ellie, oh my word. I haven't finished it ven after hearing the leaks and listening to the backlash and all of that. Alot of the hate is out of context because of the leaks and rumors (Abby is trans, homophobic Christian cult), but some of the hate is legitimate (character motivation, and the lost of the character).

The ending completely through me off from what could have been a good game, my final score is 5/10 because of the atrocious ending that ruined it. Ultimately, the graphics were great, music and sound 2was fantastic, but the story had pacing issues and an absolutely terrible ending.

6/10 is a fair score imo. I don't think I can recommend it at full price though, maybe wait for a sale instead.

I think I can divide this game into 3 parts, with the 3rd part being the worst and also very short in comparison, more like an epilogue. If the game ended like I thought it would at the end of that 2nd part, the ending would have been a little bit better (worthy of a 7/10) and for me satisfying, but unfortunately we got an extra 2 or 3 hours of playtime before the game ended and those few hours felt completely unnecessary with an ending that was just kind of meh.

Overall I really enjoyed the game despite it's flaws.

    - Story is kind of mediocre for me. We have seen this type of story in many movies and executed better and also much worse. Despite a weaker story, I still wanted some answers throughout the game (and I was satisfied with them) and I wanted to know what happens next. The characters can sometimes be **** stupid and make stupid decisions (some of them selfish) just to keep the game going. I also liked all the flashbacks that happen throughout the game. They didn't feel like filler to me.

    - The graphics are very good even on the normal ps4, the acting is great and so is the level design. There are also a few bigger areas this time. I saw a few (not many) graphical glitches here and there, but perhaps there are less of them on ps4 pro.

    - The gameplay has also been improved and was easily the best part of the game for me. It is very similar to the first game, except you can now also jump, prone and even hide in tall grass and under vehicles and some objects. I THINK they even added a dodge button (or was it in the 1st game as well? I can't remember), which makes the combat better. You can also craft a silencer for your gun. You no longer have to waste shivs to open locked doors. The AI is a bit on the dumber side even on Survivor difficulty and can sometimes be easily exploited, but I've seen worse in some other games. (For example: In the 3rd part of the game I managed to take out probably at least 15 humans (most of them with melee attacks) while hiding in one small hallway with 3 covers, 1 way in from the front and 1 from the back. One brave fool or usually exactly 2 enemies always stopped on each side of the door that leads into the hallway for a few seconds before only one of them came inside to try and fail to kill me while the other one walked away from the door before finally coming in and let me do it instead of coming in in pairs or groups. Also, none of them apparently knew the layout of their own house because they could have easily surprised me behind if they bothered to walk through the room on the right of the hallway that I couldn't see, but they had access to only if they jumped over a very small concrete fence first that was right next to that door.)

    - I didn't see many bugs, other than usually 1 infected being stuck in a small area and keeping aggro after losing sight of me two or three times in different encounters and a human enemy becoming invisible in the 3rd part of the game when I tried to aim at him from position that the game didn't like.
    - Looting feels a lot more rewarding this time, even on the hardest difficulty. If you try to explore everything, you will find a lot of pills, scrap and crafting components and how much ammo you will take into each encounter once again depends completely on your play-style. And you will definitely need that ammo.

    - I loved the encounters in this game. Some were really brutal, 1 or maybe 2 were a bit scary with some horror game vibes, but most of them were fun, 3 or 4 however were frustrating and they forced me to actually play well to get through them. Luckily the autosaves are very frequent during all encounters and they even helped me win a few difficult fights despite the result being a draw. Unfortunately though, for me many encounters felt like filler just to extend the game length, but because I really enjoyed the gameplay, I didn't really care.

You don't achieve this outcome by behaving arrogantly and patronising your audience, by indulging yourself in sadistic little tricks at their expense, or by betraying the very people who have afforded you the opportunity to make a sequel based on their loyalty to the original.
I purposely avoided social media as much as I could on the run up to release, to allow myself the opportunity to play this game without falling prey to leaks or reading any reviews, subsequently avoiding the initial controversy. Therefore my opinion has been formed purely by the experience of playing this game and the first. That fact that I am focusing on the story and the gameplay choices made by the creators, instead of lauding the action and incredible environments, tells you everything you need to know about this game. The narcissism and folly of the authors undermine all of the aspects that were good and will forever sully the Last of Us legacy.

I believe if the game was 10 hours longer, it could really help the game.

I did not enjoy the gameplay of the first one but the story is really good part 2 its the opposite

However the entire point of the game was a revenge story which led to something else entirely which is why its not perfect and doesn't deserve the must play status. Expand

Plot: The game presented itself as this great big revenge story, but in this game the villain is the only one that gets revenge. I enjoyed most of Ellie and Joel’s scenes, they were spot on and it reminded me of the joys of being a father. But then the second half of the game (Abby’s part) just dragged... I really did not want to continue the game in that first level where the scars chase you on horses but I kept telling myself I just need to pass this one level with Abby and then I can get back to Ellie and finding out what happens in their encounter at the theater, BUT NO. The Abby section of the game is longer than Ellie’s and on top of that her friends are not interesting at all. In a shorter sentence, imagine if John Marston let Micah go at the end of RDR2. THATS what this game is.

Gameplay: Almost identical time part 1, it’s the only thing that got me through completing the game.

    Sounds: Phenomenal

Graphics: Naughty Dog is great at this!

If you still plan on playing this game t wait til it’s like $20 or borrow it from a friend, it’s not worth $60.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game starts off fine. Playing the section as Ellie is fine. The problem with the game is when you have to play ~10 hours as Abby. All of the progress into skill trees is reset and the main problem I had with the first game comes back, the shiv crafting mechanic. And that's just the gameplay problems. The story is an absolute **** It tries to convey the message of revenge is bad. While also arguing that revenge is good by not punishing Abby herself. Overall, the start is playable/good, but the entire second half of the game is boring and left me wondering when it would finally end throughout. Therefore I would give it a 5 or a 5.5 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part ll is an emotional rollercoaster for its fanbase. The realism gives this game a feel that no other game quite has, the combat system gives you a constant adrenaline rush. Graphics are good yet inconsistent to the point it becomes annoying. Storywise it forces you to adapt to change in an uncomfortable yet realistic way when you think about the game’s setting and circumstances. Think of this game like a brand new car with a large dent on the driver’s side, everything works perfectly the gameplay feels amazing but the story is something hard to ignore. Now im going to stop being politically correct for a moment and start dropping the truth. The reason why this game has so many negative reviews is because they let somebody push a feminist agenda on a perfectly good game. They killed Joel right off the bat, They turned Ellie into Sigmund Freud’s wet dream, Ellie’s stealing a chick of some asian cuckboy and then you get to play as this monstrous giant female as if the people who work at character development have been living with an inferiority complex the size of the statue of liberty their whole lives. Its like somebody at naughty dog lost a bet to a misandrist. I liked the guitar so im giving this game a 6 for attention to detail. Expand

This is why I never trust "professional" critic this is a good game but to call it 9 or 10 out of 10 is laughable. For one, no game is 10 out 10. The story is all over the place and it is a huge disappointment compared to the first game. The gameplay is pretty good though with some fantastic AI.

    1. One of the best looking games I have ever played.
    2. Animations so smooth you might think it's scripted.
    3. Incredible performances.
    4. One of the most polished games I have ever played. Everything just works! No hiccups in gameplay, character models, animations or environments.
    5. Amazing atmosphere - building. You can really feel the despair, anger, horror and hopelessness as you travel through this post-apocalyptic world.
    6. I did enjoy the newly introduced RPG element. Picking skills to learn and seeing it come to life in gameplay was always great.

    Cons:

    1. I did not care about Abby or her group of friends no matter how hard the game tried. When you have to play one half of the entire game as a character you just can't find yourself to like, the game starts to drag.
    2. The game tried too hard to portray Ellie as the villain (should have been more subtle).
    3. The stealth gameplay (although very polished) is nothing new. Toward the last third of the game, I found myself just trying to get through the fight sequences so I can get closer to the end. It's too many tossing bottles/bricks, sneaking up behind an enemy and pressing triangle. And this is coming from somebody who LOVES stealth games. There just were not enough elements to keep me interested.
    4. Did not care for the supporting cast. They were very forgettable.
    5. TLOU 2 could have benefited from shaving 3-4 hours from the run time. Some sequences felt unnecessary and were clearly only there to force us to connect with Abby more (which the game ultimately failed in).

Unfortunately, I do think TLOU 2 was an unnecessary sequel. The devs told us they would not create a sequel unless it was significant and it just fell short.

In terms of gameplay the game is an excellent sequal, but in terms of storytelling and building on characters from the first game it is a sorry excuse for a sequel following one of the best narrative games to date. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
