I personally didn't like the game (well just the story), if the scenes were rearranged then I could of liked it but I really felt like playing as Abby was a chore, I didn't really care about her group or anything. The AI on this game is great, hearing the human NPCs scream their friends name is just horrifying and killing dogs is just sad. The options of how to approach an encounter are limitless, it's so fun to stealth a section of the game. I just don't like the review bomb of this game, I may not have liked the story but it doesn't mean it's a bad game this is really a 6 or 7 game if you want to read legitimate reviews for the game read the reviews of 5 and above those people know what they want to talk about. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The graphics are simply amazing. The gameplay...wasn't much different from the previous one, which was good but it was for a PS3 game. They could evolve it a little bit more. That being said I was satisfied with it plus it had a few "chase" parts that were simply amazing. Now storywise...that was the big issue. The game had it's heartwarming scenes that we were expecting but it was a little bit lacking from the get go. On the first one you saw the characters develop and slowly care for one another. With this one you have mainly a revenge story. You also had more than a few subplots that in my opinion were not needed. The relationship with Dina could be more explored and developed I believe if they didn't spend so much time on the "bbg" of the game Abby. I really didn't get the same emotions for her relationship with Owen as I got from Ellie and Dina. And frankly how could I? All I knew about her was that she mercilessly tortured and killed one of my favorite characters. When I fought Ellie while I was controlling Abby I kept losing because I didn't want to kill Ellie. We could understand why she did what she did but they shouldn't try so hard to make us like her. The fact that we undestand why she did it doesn't mean we can forgive or even forget it an then go on ahead and root for her. As for the whole LGBTQ agenda that many are saying. You already have Ellie (and since you decided to give her a love interest, Dina) which is nice. They are fleshed out charactera that their sexual preferences doesn't dictate their whole character. But when you meet Lev (who personally I liked as a character way more than I did Abby) it feels a bit forced. His whole story arc ia because he is (biologically speaking) a woman and as a result he suffers for it. And finally the end...well I really felt like I played for nothing. Abby got to live with Lev (most likely they went to the Fireflies) and Ellie got what? She lost Joel, she lost Dina and JJ. She lost her ability to play the guitar and express her emotions that way. So...why did I played through that story? Really unsatisfying ending. Tommy got injured for life, he ruined his marriage and he didn't get revenge for his brother. And Joel died. So everyone we came to love and wanted to see again after so many years got screwed over pretty bad. In every sense and in every way. While the "villains" of the story got on top. Sure Abby lost her love Owen but she can rebuilt her life and find someone else. Lev lost his sister but he got another "sister" in Abby and both found a new life with each other and propably with the Fireflies. I know someone said that she was bit but she really didn't show it. Anyone who is bitten looks way worse and is suffering. Even if she was bitten that makes it an even worse end because she leaves with Lev...so what? She'll turn on the boat and eat him? Let's say that they HAD managed to make me like Abby. With such an ending I would be furious! Amyway, I know that a point this game and this story was trying to make was that as with life here as well things are not just black and white. Ellie actually did exactly what Abby did. But I really didn't need to see characters I loved this much suffer for no reason. There was no catharsis. Shame for such a great story to end up like that. My score is 6.4 (there are no decimals so 6) mainly because of the technical aspects of the game and for the really emotional flashbacks Ellie was having (both good memories and bad). Expand

Tlou 2 was mediocre at best. Gameplay was same fun gameplay tlou 1 had. Story was mediocre revenge story we've all seen before. Nothing new there. Abby sucked ass. Pure trash character. Absolutely worst part of the game was that naughty dog forced me to play that steroid **** I never expected this to be as good as tlou1 but come on, this game was just bad compared to the first.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have tried my absolute best to like this game. But despite excellent gameplay and graphics, the story just doesn’t work. I spent 30 plus hours lying to myself that by the end, it would all make sense. And everything would come together. However all I was left with was a confused mess, that tries far to hard to be shocking and edgy. It’s all over the place with different characters and time periods. There’s a complete lack of momentum. Old characters are handled badly. And new characters are wasted, due to how they are introduced and set up. To add icing onto the cake... the entire story is kind of pointless. Nothing is resolved, and everyone has just had the worst time. The story is a real shame. The graphics and gameplay are solid. It’s a well made game, that had limitless potential. Unfortunately, although I appreciate naughty dog’s ambition with the plot. It just didn’t work. It’s so bad, that it spoils the game.

I have just completed the game, and I feel exactly how I felt after watching the last Jedi. I didn’t hate it... but I kind of wish it had never happened.

Naughty dog, A for effort, but D for outcome. Please take onboard fans criticism instead of insisting we didn’t get the game. We did... we appreciate what you tried to do. But it didn’t work. Things that would have helped the story.
    1. I have no issue with dying dying, but he should have had a better exit. Make it so that Abby refuses to help him up during an escape from the infected after learning who he is. Then being conflicted with her decision afterwards. And so the revenge part makes sense. Have Ellie be there. Have Abby then push Ellie down. And Joel dies saving Ellie one last time. Even have it so Ellie has to kill Joel before he turns. This would add so much more to the end of the first game. Ellie loses Joel to an infection she was supposed to cure. If Ellie needs more of a reason to revenge on Abby. Have Abby also release infected into Jackson, to aid her escape. Dooming hundreds.
    2. Abby had potential. But you needed to make us bond with her before she killed Joel. Personally I liked her gameplay. Had she been in a different game unrelated from this mess of a plot. I would have given her a chance. 3. Have a decent twist. Make it so Abby is also immune. Her dad knew this all along... but couldn’t go through with it. So started using/finding other people with forms of immunity, so he didn’t have to kill her. Have Abby find this out during her segment (so her play through has a point, and doesn’t drag). With her eventually realising that her father and Joel weren’t so different. 4. Have her and Ellie have more screen time out of beating the hell out of each other. So they can understand each other’s side of the story. This way, it actually makes sense why one lets the other go. They can even bond over their immunity. This game is not awful. But it’s certainly not good. And it has the potential to be fantastic with some revision to the story. This can all be done whilst keeping the basic bones of the story. And it would drive home the intended message, far better than the over the top nonsense it is now.

Ellie just isnt the one that we knew in the first game, and neither is Joel, both make stupid choices that they would have never done. Abby isnt a like able villain/protagonista, she has a very stupid motive for wanting them both dead, and it doesnt make you connect with her by just playing as her, what made Neil Druckman believe that was the case? No clue. Aside from them there are a few likable characters, like Jesse, Dina and the dog. However the story telling is just bad, terrible, the whole game happens for nothing, the purpose of the game isnt acjieved and not by your choice, but the writters, what was the point of playing it then? Aside from that they really didnt cared ripping off Mulan, those who have played know what I mean by that. The game is just lacking, it makes you make some **** choices, and then makes you feel bad about it, just because. Rating this game a 0 or 1 is completely asinine and simply review bombing. The Last of us Part 2 is a story of revenge where the first one was about love and character building using Joel and Ellie. TLoU part 1 was truly a one of a kind masterclass in character development and story telling. There were few plot holes, everything made sense. In part 2, if you expect to see the same thing you’ll be disappointed. To be honest if part 1 was Modern Family, part 2 is throwing that series into the Walking Dead and killing off years worth of character development. The problem here is not the SJW or whatever people are screaming about. If TLoU part 1 was praised for story, character building, graphics and animation, part 2 will be praised for its graphics and animation only.

The gameplay feels old. Yes you have an uncharted 4 rope mechanic at times and you can utilize your environment a bit more (under cars) but the actual gameplay, puzzles, etc seem like they were just refreshed for PS4. Was it a stylized choice? I’m not sure, I can see the argument but adding jump and dodge doesn’t seem like it’s breaking out on its own even for this world.

The graphics and animation are simply superb, I can’t stress enough how good it runs and the prowess of ND developers are in this regard even on PS4 Slim.

What makes the outrage so big in this game is that Naughty Dog took what made the first game so special and killed it off. Both the story, character development and pacing are not up to the same standard as the first game.

It’s a shame this is the route they took, there were all sorts of possibilities and I feel this was one of the worst ways to go.

That said, the multiplayer on PS5 if it happens will be amazing and I hope Naughty Dog rebounds for the eventual DLC.

The death of certain characters was done in poor taste. And they had to insert a bunch of cultural Marxist SJW feminist bs, that I just can't stand. It is basically weak soyboys everywhere living along the manly or insanely tough and smart women; they even had a pregnant woman go out in the field, fighting. Why? Basically Antifa chumps inserted into the game. It is pathetic. I also didn't like that Ellie and Dina didn't have any chemistry. But I did like them as characters in general. After finishing this game, I think it’s fair to say it is alright. The graphics are nice, the gameplay is alright, and the story is just a normal revenge story with a bunch of complex situations. The only thing I would say wasn’t good about this game was the pacing and 2nd half of the game (not concluding the final acts after the first fight between Abby and Ellie). Other than that, I liked it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After completing the game, i must say this game is in no way a perfect game, a 10/10, it also isn’t a 0/10, I give this game a 6/10 and here is how I see it:

Graphics 10/10: this game gorgeous, nothing more to say

Story: 6/10: this is one of the main problems for me, the story is good, but is not unique like in TLOUS 1, (in than game it was Ellie’s story, no one else could become the cure but her). On part two they made a 25+ hour story about revenge. Now revenge stories can be really good if done right, but on this game it just feels like something is missing, it feels hollow.

Again, comparing it to its predecessor, TLOUS 1 gave us a story than was a lot richer and in half the time. After finishing the first game, the story left me thinking about what i would have done in that situation, even though the game didn’t give you a choice i felt the weight of the decision and keep me thinking about it after finishing it. On TLOUS part 2, after finishing it 25+ hours, it felt like any other game. Thinking it over, imagine if ND gave us a choice, at the end, after showing us the two sides of the story, we as the player get to decide to (TO DO or NOT TO DO).

Gameplay 6/10: Yes, The Last of Us Part 2 improves on the gameplay of its predecessor but that’s not saying much, since it feels very limited and dull as the time progresses. It feels like the gameplay could have been a lot more, or maybe the game could have used other sections like more puzzles or mini-games to change the pace.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After reviewing all The Last of Us Part II story, I have to admit that I was completely wrong with my previous rating. The playable aspect and the story are really good, as well as the graphics. There are a lot of good things about this game but there's one thing that I would have liked to see, and that's Ellie and Joel talking before his death. I don't mean the flashback at the end, I mean an explanation of Ellie feelings to Joel. The thing I hated the most was its last trailer. When I saw that Joel was alive I got really happy and excited of seeing Joel and Ellie in action again but when we saw Jesse was the one who appeared, that made me really sad even though I like Jesse as a character. To sum up, a good story with a good message that was a bit underwhelming but still a good game Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Technically, it's amazing in terms of graphics, animation, environment, music and acting as expected of ND. Rope physics anyone?

Gameplay has seen some improvement from the first game but not too greatly. Addition of the rope and use of it to travel more vertical environments wasn't used more effectively. I was always pretty meh about the combat even for the first game, it served its purpose. The dodge did add some variety initially but it get a little repetitive, the lengthier playtime didn't help either. While the environments themselves look great, I felt let down by the lack of environmental puzzles. This was a gripe with the first game as well with how it kept using the ladders and garbage carts. ND has shown that they can do much better looking at their Uncharted series, so maybe it was a conscious decision to avoid being too similar or it wasn't a top priority for this game.

My biggest issue with the game sadly was the story and pacing. What drew me to TLoU has always been the story. This time I feel like they didn't do as good a job as fleshing out the new characters and the relationships. The first game featured a smaller cast of characters centered on the core characters Joel and Ellie. This really allowed us to grow closer to them throughout the game, and they were also supported by a cast of characters that I greatly enjoyed. This time I appreciate that they showcased a more diverse cast, but it also created some difficulty that with the time restraint most of the relationships were not able to be developed to the same extent. In the end I didn't feel much empathy for Abby or any of her friends, and Jesse and Dina were likeable but I needed more relationship development. All my favourite moments in the story were the ones between Joel and Ellie because it built upon an already existing and well developed relationship, while providing insight into the way it has grown and also strained over the course of the years. Their chemistry couldn't be beat by the rest. The new cast of characters had some potential but were not likeable or memorable enough.

It was interesting what ND tried to do in trying to make players think from different perspectives on our characters' actions and their consequences. It was a good attempt but was wanting in execution.

The way they tried to frame the story to push that Ellie was becoming the villain and that Abby had some good in her felt cheap and manipulative. In the way where when you are playing as Ellie they force you to kill dogs, murder a pregnant woman then when you play as Abby you play with the dog, save kids etc. (And then you rmb Abby tortures Joel to death with a golf club, and prob would have killed Dina who was pregnant if Lev wasn't there so welp) We can all see what you are trying to go for here but it came on too hamfisted. Even from the first game we knew Joel wasn't a good guy, and his final decision is controversial. But everyone could understand his motives because it was a very human decision that he made in the end. I could understand Abby's reason for wanting to kill Joel because it was a very human motive to want to avenge her father, but her character wasn't developed well enough for me to like her or be fully behind her. I will say though certain portions of the game if viewed as standalones disregarding the story surrounding it were very powerful and masterfully done in terms of atmosphere and execution.

Pacing wise the game was just too long. It felt really draggy at some parts and certain decisions on the way they cut the game was odd. It does seem like it goes again what was previously stated about not enough time being given to develop all the characters, relationships. Which is why to some extent I do feel like the main plot of this game should have been reserved for a third game, with the second more focused on introducing the new characters and maybe even introducing Ellie to them. It could have the potential to make us feel more conflicted on whose side we would be on had we the opportunity to grow closer with Abby's side.

This is kind of not related to the game but I have big issues with the way ND marketed the game after playing through it. I understand trying to hide major plot points of the game, other games and movies have also done this before. But tricking people into thinking Joel will be along with you for the journey, or basically hiding the existence of a second main character is like taking subterfuge to a whole nother level. I would even say it is basically false advertising.

TL;DR Technically amazing, lots of respect to the countless people who worked on this game. Improvements on game play were there but not too big. Dragged down greatly by the story that didn't live up to the first game. Story can be a downfall for a game, especially this franchise that was built upon having a great story in the first place. I will say that my scoring decision had a heavier weightage towards story because of this.

CONS: Despite the efforts of Naughty Dog to make its story convincing, TLoU2 is disappointing because its narrative and character development pale in comparison to that of TLoU1. TLoU2 tries too hard to convince the players to love its characters and its message, "Revenge is wrong." Where TLoU1 allowed the message and its characters to develop naturally through dialogue and subtext, TLoU2 seemed to force its message and characters too immediately upon the audience. TLoU1's story felt gradual and alluring, whereas TLoU2's story was standard.

TLoU2 is impressive as a standalone game, but it's nothing special when compared to TLoU1.

That being said, I enjoyed the story for the most part, it made me cry more than once and I felt really compelled to see it through to the end, however there are some issues regarding pacing, plot holes and inconsistent character motivations that do not match with what was already established in the first game, I cant convince myself that these are small problems because they took me away from the experience, specially when I remember how magical the first entry was storywise.
i've been around since the PS1 days and can honestly say that gameplay, graphics, animations, presentation and sound design are hands down the best ive seen so far in any video game, I often found myself in various moments just stopping the journey to appreciate the attention to detail of the enviourments, or replaying cutscenes to see the facial expressions and body language of the characters, really a remarkable achievment from a technical standpoint.
To sumarize, this is a great game on its own merits, with a very unique, different and interesting way of telling a tale of right and wrong, how perspective alone can make you sympathize with a character dispite his/her actions. But, as a sequel to one of the best games of all time, it delivers an experience that is nowhere near as good as the first one. In the end of the day, I would recommend buying and investing 30 hours into it. Hope this was helpful.

Enjoy a lot of the game, looks fantastic but had a few unexplained AI moments (not uncommon in most games to be fair) but the kicker is the storyline, I just really dislike the changes to the characters, there's also a weird disconnect between how they act and then specific cut scenes.

I play slower than most people and wasn't in a rush to complete it since I'd heard about the ending anyway. Did not expect it to be quite as poorly finished as that though. What a way to kill off what could have been a great series of 3-4 games. I've no interest in a sequel at this point.

Looks good, game play is the same, nothing new, but still ok, sometimes great, sometimes boring and repetative.
Music is really some random chords, no match to first game.
Terrible script, and not because of the first part. Just full of holes, and second part of the game is a more a comedy then drama, its really that bad. Not 0-110 obviously, but far from the 10 too.

That's where all my good things end. I think Naughty Dog was successful in that I felt hate, and I felt what Ellie was feeling: to be emotionally exhausted. The problem? The whole experience was not worth it in the end. They risked a lot in this game, and in my optinion it did not pay off. i enjoyed Ellie at first, but they wrote her into a tragic trope. Always getting beat down, always making the wrong decisions, and generally just kind of acting dumb. Her story arc was narrow and felt lacking in the end. Despite all other achievements, story mattered most and it was not good or satisfying.

Our other new character Abby, is also not very interesting. She shows no remorse for her actions early in the story and generally seems to not care all that much about her friends. They try to make you like her, but it's all surface level. There's no real depth to her and I didn't feel like she was relatable. Near the end of the game, they have essentially morphed Abby into Joel 2.0 and it didn't feel earned.

I wanted to love this game, and I struggled for literally weeks after beating to try and find some redeeming quality to make myself like it. I couldn't. In the end i just questioned the point, and wish with all my heart that it would have been different.

Just finished the game last night. Took me 25hrs...
Wow, what a terrible ending. It honestly felt like it went on forever and just wouldn't end?

    Good parts
    1. Graphics are amazing and best on any console.
    2. Voice acting/Cute scenes best in the business
    3. Combat is so much fun
    4. Lots of cool moments that was so intense and brutal.
    5. Executions are super satisfying.
    6. Gunplay is enjoyable for the most part.
    7. New character Jesse was awesome! And he just gets ****ed up way too easily.
    8. Flashback scenes with Joel were amazing. Just made me want him back even more.
    Bad/Ok
    1. Grinding all game long for upgrades was such a hassle, probably why It took me 25hrs to complete.
    2. The story was all over the place.
Why did they kill of Joel so early in the game? And make me want to hate Abby straight away. Then try so hard to make us like her? She was alright but the way it happened was just terrible.
    3. Her crew were scumbags and cheaters and not likeable.
    4. Ellie and Dina were ok, but their story was average?
So much plot holes it was just bad writing.
    5. Joel and his brother being absolute dumbarses with complete strangers? Was so annoying and could have been executed way better.
    6. New enemy types, Barely any really?
    7. Barely any Innovations for a sequel
    8. Game length
First time in a long time. I wanted the game to end, and I still had 5 hrs before I was finished with the game?
    9. Some boring dialogue and dragged out scenes and action set scenes.
    10. The ending was terrible and was such a waste of time and made you go through it twice? Really dragged and dragged.
Abby was ok and I was hellbent to make her pay.
But by the end, they just made me not really care for anybody at the end. Felt like they forced me to like her. By making her OP and give her all the best parts in the game and weapons and gadgets.
So sad when this was supposed to be an amazing franchise that could keep pumping out amazing games. But they stuffed it up. I do not want a new one or care now.

I wish I could say it was a solid game but in my opinion it wasn't. sex scenes nobody asked for and slew of questionable design tactics. characters are wildly inconsistent to say the least. They go from cautious and crafty to bumbling amateurs when the plot calls for it. If you ever seen Walking Dead (later seasons) then you've seen this game down to the end-of-the-world crazy religious group. The script is constantly trying really hard for those hard shock moments but they are rarely earned. There are "rivalries" that hardly make any sense in a apocalypse scenario wrapped in paper thin illogical revenge plot. Cartoonish decision making of the "realistic" characters are abound. A pregnant lady actively deciding to enter a combat zone is the one of MANY examples that come to mind.
Now the meat of the story is Abby's revenge plot. Imagine if every character held onto a grudge like this in a apocalypse scenario while they systematically ignore years of death around them not related to their trauma; that's Abby. Then convincing several people who hardly like her to go on a suicide mission across a frozen wasteland just on a rumor. Let's not forget the first TLoU ENTIRE plot was a Plot A to Plot B where MANY people died. This should help the gravity of the situation sink in. NOPE, TLoU2 just glosses over the entire journey with a "and they made it to destination unscathed" said in Morgan Freeman's voice...not once but multiple times through the plot! It's so jarring for a game that prides itself on realism and then says "then Mel magically appears out of door 2".

Here's the good. if you can ignore the story there are several intense fight scenes that truly bring the game alive. There is an underground battle with a baddy that I'm sure is one of the best in the game. The environments and scenery are amazing to say the least and do deserve some credit. These are some of the things that do prop the game up. More of this, less of virtue signaling please.

Ideally, I look forward to playing video games, this was a game that felt like an uphill battle to finish. There were a couple of stand-out sequences throughout the adventure, but there wasn't one character, I really liked or cared about in this game.... yes... that's even true of Ellie. Moving on to the graphics, of course, Naughty Dog knocks it out of the park here! The graphics are outstanding! But the story..... oh man :-( So, why am I giving this game a 7? Because it made me feel things. It made me angry, frustrated, scared... it made me feel things in a AAA game, I haven't felt before and the graphics and game play, are excellent. One last thought I realized today as I was playing "Ghost of Tsushima." For me, TLOU2 was not fun! Not at all. It was a chore to finish and I had to force myself through it. Ghost of Tsushima, is fun and I find myself anxious to play again during times I need to be responsible... like, ya know... working for a living. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved everything about the original Last Of Us. So it makes me really sad to say that Part II was a big disappointment.

The story is a waste of potential and a pretentious yet incompetent mess. Ellie and Joel are great characters and their relationship was the soul of the series. There were a lot of interesting places that relationship could have gone. Instead, it is all discarded in return for a revenge plot, when Joel is killed at the start of the game. The trade is not at all worth it, as the resulting story is both uninteresting and ludicrous.

I'd like to make a brief aside here to mention that the developer released a trailer in which Joel effectively tells Ellie that he will be accompanying her through the game. This turned out to be a fake scene; in the actual game, there's another character in Joel's place. This was essentially an attempt to deceive the customer, and I don't think it's acceptable.

A significant amount of time is also spent playing as Joel's killer, Abbie, in a ham-fisted attempt to tell a story about empathy. While such a story may have worked in a medium such as film, in the medium of video games, in which the player is an active participant, it is totally broken; the player is eventually forced to try to kill Ellie, which obviously they don't actually want to do, and then a few hours later we're forced to try to kill Abbie, as if we've also suddenly forgotten the chunk of the game getting to know her. It actively disengages the player. Aside from these major structural flaws, the new characters are generally pretty dull, and the incidental story -- a city's draconian government is overthrown by the populace, who descend into tribal warfare -- is just a stale rehash of the first game.

I really enjoyed the gameplay of the original. This sequel is very similar, with a handful of new additions -- in particular, more involved melee, a few new weapons and a few new enemies. The combat is still solid and there are some great set pieces. But this is a long game, and there is just not enough innovation or variation here; I was surprised to find myself becoming bored long before the game ended. The scavenging in particular starts to feel like a real chore, and actually an encumbrance upon the act of getting from A to B, which is the majority of the gameplay. Environmental puzzles would have really helped, and the ones that are in the game are satisfying, but they are few and far between.

On a technical level the visuals are excellent. However, the vast bulk of the game is spent in the city of Seattle. This means there just isn't the scope to keep the game visually creative. It's also too similar in locations to the original game. Schools, hospitals, hotels, city streets and the suburbs... we've seen most of it before. The animation it must be said is best in class, although not quite the technical marvel shown in the 2018 trailer. And a special mention has to be made of the nice detail of enemies calling each other by name, which really adds a layer of believability.

Finally, the musical score, which was so strong in the first game, is also a surprising let down; in fact it is barely present.

Overall, I had a really mixed experience played this game. On the whole I can't really say that I enjoyed it. The developers might argue that that's not the point. I disagree. I'm not talking of enjoyment in the simplistic sense of having "fun". A tragedy, well-crafted, is still "enjoyable" in the deeper sense of the word. I don't think this game was well-crafted. I think it made a number of serious errors which led to it falling far short of its potential, and probably killing off my interest in the future of this series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is a monumental achievement in the technical sense. This level of polish really defines the world we left on an impactful moment 7 years ago. The detail is astounding and exploring Seattle was breathtaking in the opening hours of the game. I'm just sad that Naughty Dog didn't run with this structure and allowed you to explore more and let the player decide when to move towards those story beat areas, and move the chains forward in the narrative.

Gameplay was expanded upon offering a nice mix of action/stealth/ and exploration. I just wish they had incorporated more of the grappling hook or other mechanics to add more diversity in the exploration. I loved the upgrade system and how the guns changed as you swapped stocks or other parts over time. The weapons felt weighty and I enjoyed how Abby and Ellie played very differently. Ellie leaning more into the stealth with her switchblade and Abby be more cable physically.

Unfortunately, the narrative falls short and you're never given much reason to care for many of the new characters with a few exceptions like Owen and Jesse. While Owen may not be a fan favorite I felt his struggles and inner turmoil made him one of the few characters and in spite of some rather poor love life choices he felt the most real of the group from Seattle at least to me.

Meanwhile, being one-half of our protagonists, Abby never really shined for me. I felt her portion of the narrative could have been cleaner and first impressions are hard to overcome. After Joel saving her, she never really took the time to rethink her decision nor reconsider what she was doing as Ellie screamed and pleaded for her to stop. Only after it was done did she begin to see her actions in a new light and began trying to balance her ledger with a little bit of good. Overall, I always felt that Joel carried the weight/burden of his prior actions - I just never felt Abby fully understood what she did or really regretted what she gave up in pursuit of revenge, She didn't understand the psychological harm she inflicted on Ellie nor did she ever ask for forgiveness which I felt could have been impactful as she loaded into the boat with Lev. It was left up to Ellie to just let go of hate for someone who really didn't seem to care how she harmed Ellie at the start of their journey.

This arc could have been structurally cleaner and spending time with the gang from Seattle would have made their mission more understandable or relatable. I do applaud Naughty Dog for taking a risky narrative but the gamble just doesn't pay off in my opinion. Abby, Mel, and more could have been so much more. At the end of it all, it didn't teach me any new lessons that I haven't already considered or learned, it just felt for nothing.

In addition, the narrative felt padded as that a natural ending point would have been the tense showdown at the theatre but the last section of Santa Barbara felt unneeded.

Overall, Naughty Dog swung for the moon but still managed to land among the stars. The game is beautiful, the gameplay was expanded, but the narrative left me wanting and while it may connect with some it just wasn't for me. Unfortunately, with such a heavily story-driven game most of the points should come from the narrative regardless of technical achievements. Thus I have to land on a 5 out of 10.

    BUT

The story is very basic in writing and scope. Though it took me around 21 hours to complete if the padding was removed it would likely be less than 1/2 that. On top of that the player has zero influence over the story and has no choices in the game what-so-ever that affect anything. Your playthrough will be exactly the same as everyone else outside of combat.

The characters also act contrary to how they are set up during pivotal moments. I won't go into details as not to add spoilers but the choices the characters make are completely against what they would do based upon their other actions and motivations. If I was rating only on characters and story It would be a sub 5 score.

As a whole package I settled on a 6 as what I feel is fair. It saddens me as I loved the first and this could have been an 8+ with some changes to the narrative and characters but will now just be a below average game I will forget completely in the future.

The trailers were very misleading as to what the experience would be. You could have made it clear who you would be playing as without giving the story away. It would have been an avoid, had this been known.

The structure of the story is very jarring, there are large sections that are just filler. The main couple in the game have disappointing chemistry, compared to Ellie’s interactions with other named characters, her gf is very wooden. SJW theme is pushed a little hard at the beginning but this becomes a non issue after an hour, it is a shame they felt the need themselves to make a big deal of Ellie being gay rather than just treating it as a matter of fact straight away.

Playing as the other 2nd main character is just trash. This is a game, it’s meant to be fun. No one wanted this. The first big death in the game, was okay with me but I understand due to the advertising and people’s deep investment why they were angry.

My main issue is with the writing. It’s very obvious that there was a message they were trying to convey. But the themes they present are not exactly ground breaking, humans capable of evil, we are all the villain in someone else’s story, revenge bad. This is a game for adults, this is not groundbreaking stuff. If you are going to prop a whole game up on these themes. Deliver it well, concisely and nail The characters and arcs.

Weirdly the arc on the hellish 2nd character is a hell of a lot better than Ellie, but the character is just essentially a ****. Combined with the wrongs done earlier, I’d be surprised if 1/10 people managed to connect with this character. It was awful and demotivating.

Ellie’s arc is just a total mess. Key decision at the end made zero sense and really made no sense at that specific moment. No one would have had that revelation at that point.

I could go on, but ultimately the story feels like a story not worth telling. The characters are inconsistent, there are parts where it’s just like, this is not how human beings work. All of this could have been forgiven, but they clearly made the narrative the main crux and message of the game and that falls very, very flat.

You can have a layered, you can have bleak, you can have a message. But don’t **** it up and sit there like a child and tell people it’s what you take out of it, like this is some kind of high art and not a story that would have gotten you laughed out of any book or film publisher In the world.

This game has amazing atmosphere. The environments and sound design are truly phenomal. Also the voice acting and animations are really good. There are more parts to a game though. Lets start with gameplay. Overall the gameplay is fine, but after a long time with not a lot of change in it it gets too repetitive. A lot of encounters start feeling the same. Then the characters. While the characters are really well voice acted and have great animations, they are a very flat/empty. We aren't given a reason to care about them, which also makes anything that happens to them less impactful. The story part of the game is the biggest mess. The story is mediocre, very much unlike the first game, and has serious pacing issues. Sometimes it skips parts that could have been interesting, but often it is too slow and is dripfeeding you small bits of story. But the biggest problem is delivery. The order in which the story is told and the way it is done is incredibly jarring and is a real detriment to the experience. Also the bold decision they made to have you play approx. half the game as Abby (while also advertising the game with only Joel and Ellie) has not worked out at all. At the start I actively did not want to play as her as the game has only painted her as a bad person and has not given the player any reason to like her. All things considered I still enjoyed the game, but not as much as I should've with a Naughty Dog game and it especially did not live up to the emotional level The Last of Us 1 had.

The positives were the beautiful visuals in some unique locations. The cinematic cut scenes at the end of most chapters were also exceptional. Those were the two things that kept me engaged.

    So then there's the negatives...

The gameplay which felt repetitive. Human zone, infected zone, scavenge zone. Repeat. Then all the time spent in Seattle. So many beautiful locations and variety when the game wasn't in Seattle. But 60% of the game was hotel lobbies, coffee shops, streets and commercial buildings. No notable gameplay mechanics or crafting options introduced over last of us 1. Scavenging was unrewarding but it felt like I would be at a disadvantage if I didn't. 1 pill here, 1 bullet there. Killing humans with the shotgun, mines and bow was fun though.

The story. I actually liked the plot point of Abby killing Joel. Seeing Joel from a different perspective (that he did kill someone elses father and at the expense of humanities cure). But the execution was missed. Ellie became a moody unlikable person. Her story was 'revenge for Joel'. Abby on the other hand was much more interesting up until the end of seattle day 2. Then the scar refugee angle felt weak. Felt missed to not have her weave in and out of Ellies events in Seattle. Her ending - a random capture was also a disappointment. Santa Barbra, while beautiful, felt rushed. Less time in seattle and more time there (or just anywhere else) would have been more fun. Just more varied. **** Seattle. It just kept going and going and going. Can you tell I was over Seattle by the end? Just take me somewhere else! Please! No more hotels!

Hopefully Naughty Dog choose to kick off a new IP after this

Sadly I do not feel writing, pacing and the way story was told was very well done and simply turned game unlikable fot me, For a story heavy game like this with some heavy subjects I also found this something that made it impossible for me to rate game all that highly. That said this game is by no means awful, I can easily see people finding a lot of value here, it is just that for many it is also simply disappointment, 0 scores for me seem straight dishonest though but that's how it usually goes when people are disappointed getting something totally different than what they wanted even if that is just unfair, just how it goes. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Last of Us 2 is a Double edge Game on the one hand I loved returning to this world, the character and the game play. But on the other the story has character development, pacing and story problems that take you out of the game leaving you empty. TLoU Introduced a new kind of Zombie game with interesting enemies. NOT JUST fighting Zombie but the other humans struggling to survive. The first game to a broken man that cared about nothing in the whole world, introduces him to a young girl that sheltered optimistic and hopeful, even being born into this desolate situation. Through a story of challenges struggle, survival, these two characters grow and change to become like father and daughter. Till ultimately Joel will give up the world for Ellie. The last of us 2 improves so much Graphics are perfection and I had 0 glitches or problems. Game play was a return of survival and fighting with both Ellie & Abby feeling different. The addition to jump, dodge and go prone were all quality changes. The problem is the story and not that it isn't explained it is but it is poorly done. The game us rushed and feels to long at the same time. Jumping back and forth from Abby to Ellie and flashbacks is all to much. Ellie does not grow in any way and accomplishes nothing. Abby changes so suddenly that it is impossible to care. The game just drags and then comes to a compete stop when Dinna and Ellie are back around Jackson in a almost dreamlike Existence with their child JJ. Which she leaves for teally no reason. Then suprise fireflies are still out there somewhere, Ravages or something another group no explanation or development. In conclusion there is little to care about by the end. Most of the characters are dead, what is left are traumatized, beaten and broken, and even left hating each other. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great graphics. The only good thing I can say about this game.

Very repetitive gameplay: Too few enemies, too much looting, some parts are boring and very slow paced.

Poorly structured campaign: When you're getting to the best part with Ellie, you have to play as Abby for 10 hours. It absolutely breaks the climax.

Bad character development: People in this game just feel not real and they have no depth. All the new characters are just forgettable.

Story is simply terrible: Lots of plot holes, weird character behavior, specially at the end. Just not what fans expected of this sequel.

I will never understand the cheap death of Joel, why Abby wants to be Yara and Lev's best friend, why Ellie spares Abby in the end, etcetera.

It's a pity that this game could've been so much more. They tried to make a surprising story, and it is. For the worse.

6/10 for the graphics and some good parts (mainly hospital zone and Rat King).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The graphics are beautiful and the voice acting is great.

The gameplay is so-so at best. Moving around the environment is somewhere between functional and uninspiring. Combat is decent for ranged attacks but limited trash for melee, feeling more like something that happens in front of you rather than something you are taking part in.

Finally the story is a muddled mess. It's not terrible but not great. I feel like a better arrangement and pacing would make for a good story but alas it turns out meh. Also, the people writing the story needed to have a much better idea of the gameplay because it leads to some real clashes between what the character says and what the player has experienced.

One example that comes to mind is after a LONG gameplay segment fighting through a long section in a building then through a tunnel network where dina is actively saving your ass you finally reach an old theater and Dina is tired and admits she might be pregnant. Ellie rips into her for essentially being a burden and i'm sitting there thinking WTF are you talking about? She just helped you fight a fricking army......

If you have time to kill and cash to burn I would pick the game up. It's not bad, just not great.

Nothing is explained. Plot twists are cheap and childish. Characters and NPC don't evoke any emotions but dissapointment in developers. When we kill a pregnant woman we should feel guilt. Instead there is nothing. You kill hundreds of people. You play as serial psycho killer. Not a woman who is trying to survive. Expand

This is a really odd game. The story is about how violence and hate only lead to more of it and you will never get out of the infernal cycle. While that is compelling in principle, it does not make for an enjoyable time playing a game for hours on end where killing is your only option anyway if you want the story to progress. I can see this as a short story where there is 0 interaction expected with or a film. But in a long game like this, you just feel punished for playing as the game intended. This feels like a game that wanted to be more than it is, offering you options to not kill or not be as cruel, using different mechanics and ways to play and there being a different outcome due to it (games like Dishonored, Metal Gear Solid 3, and even Bioshock to an extent come to mind). Something like that would have made this an amazing game and fit the narrative they are trying to convey perfectly. BUT instead we get none of this, with a very scripted game that gives you the same outcome no matter what. You have to kill and you will be told that killing is bad. So like, what's the point then? And worse yet, there are parts of the game where you play as the Abby character where the gameplay is far more fun, with more options to kill. So, what am I supposed to think here? It just feels like a mess. Plus, in terms of a game, so removing the story component, it's just ok. I wasn't a huge fan of the gameplay in the first game, which felt very predictable, repetitive, tedious, and even frustrating at times (instant kills galore) so coming back to a very similar gameplay didn't make me leap for joy. Still, I will say I am quite glad the mundane environment puzzles are mostly gone and I didn't have to put anyone on a raft, that would really kill the pacing in the first game. The pacing in this game is still really off but it is dues more to the story structure rather than the gameplay segments. In the end, it's not really a game I would recommend to play over others. The entire time I was playing as Abbey I felt nothing but contempt and loathing and all I could see was Joel's face just before the moment "it" happens. I felt no guilt for hating Abby. I felt the lesson of "revenge is bad" was completely ridiculous because we live in the real world and sometimes revenge isn't bad. Sometimes it's necessary. If revenge was always bad the weak would be trampled upon and the striong would dominate everything. The writing is just terrible and taking the game in this direction was a complete mistake from the gate. All I thought to myself towards the final chapter was "Boy I wish I played this game as Tommy instead". Ellie has literally KILLED hundreds of people in cold blood but she makes a few kills in this game and all of a sudden it effects her to the point she gets sick. Its ridiculous. If someone had done that to the person I loved and I was Ellie I wouldve did everything she did without one shred of mercy or regret. How's this for a moral of a story "YOU REAP WHAT YOU SEW". Man I was very disappointed in this game. I hope they can course correct for the 3rd installment. The main reason this game got a 7 out of 10 from me is that towards the end of the game I almost didn't even want to finish it. I genuinely thought about putting the controller down and turning the game off and never putting it back on and the only reason I bothered to see it through was the time I had already invested in it. Trying to push a mushy "revenge is bad" plot line in a story which takes place in the world these characters inhabit is not only stupid, its nonsensical and illogical. The world they live in is practically fueled by kill or be killed and revenge and survival. You kill or you die. You protect those you love or they die. You make a mistake and people get killed. These are the stakes in a world like the one they live in. To try and pretend like these people have the morality that we do in the civilized and corporate world we live in is just plain dumb. So like I said the game is almost perfect in every aspect EXCEPT for the story and the direction the game is heading in. The animations, the level design, the lighting, the gun play, the detail in the environments is all top notch and something the entire development team should stand tall and be so proud of. The acting and the performances given by the voice actors is superb. Its a damn shame that a couple executives or lead devs on this project turned what should be a gritty, tough as nails, survival and revenge story into a moral lecture about how revnge doesnt solve anything. Whoever decided to go that route with the narritive completely ruined what otherwise was an amazing experience. Its funny when I finished playing the Last of Us Remastered last week all I kept thinking to myself was "They better not **** this up in the sequel", and within 2 hours of playing the sequel I kept thinking "They ****ed it up", lol Expand

It is with great disappointment and pain that I rate this game as it is. The Last of Us 1 is one of my favourite video games of all time. Its storytelling and characters are still unrivaled to this day. But The Last of Us 2 falls short of almost everything that made the original great.
I will mainly address what most gamers pick up TLOU2 for: its story and characters. Firstly the story.

I will mainly address what most gamers pick up TLOU2 for: its story and characters. Firstly the story. The central theme of the game is revenge, or rather the futility of it. It is a good theme to explore and it does tie nicely to how the first game ended. The way that the story is told, the rationale for certain events and the overall story are, for the most part, good. They are grounded and believable, and you can relate to them. The story is also handled very maturely. While some people have said that it feels pointless, I personally understand why the story had to end the way it did. The narrative is paced out quite nicely, except for some parts which can feel a little drawn out. Overall, I would say the story deserves an 8/10.
So why am I giving the game a 5/10? Because of the characters. They are undoubtedly some of the worst that I have seen in a narrative driven game. They are so flawed in the executions that they actually undo whatever good that the story does.
The characters in this game has almost no identifiable traits. The story opens with Ellie being cold and distant towards Joel, and it is never explained why (for people who have played the game, this scene takes place before Ellie found out what Joel did). During flashback sequences where Ellie is with Joel, that’s when the characters shine the most. You can feel the bond between them, just like it was in the first game. But when Ellie is by herself, she shows almost no emotion. You just cannot relate to her. You can try to rationalize it from the events in the game, but if you have to do that then the characterization has already failed. You cannot relate to her motivation, even when it is spelled out for you. The rest of the characters have even less motivation to do anything. Dina, Ellie’s lover, is shown to be a mere acquaintance, who flirted with Ellie and kissed her during a party. A few days later, Dina “ran away” with Ellie, telling her “Where you go, I go”. The same for Jesse. He has a couple of exchanges with Ellie at the start of the game, which indicated that they have no close bonds. Yet he turns up halfway through the game, proclaiming that he couldn’t let Ellie risk her life on her own. The game throws these characters at you and basically tell you that you have to like them, without giving you any reason.
Let’s talk about character traits. Dina, Jesse, Abby, Abby’s friends, the people that Abby met… What do they like? What do they dislike? What are their traits? How do they react in a given situation? These characters are cardboard cutouts with names and no identifiable traits. Take a look at Tess, or Henry, or David, or Bill, or Marlene in the original TLOU. Those characters are fleshed out in the first minute that they appear on screen. Tess, in her opening scene, showed exactly what kind of person she is. Tough, pragmatic and not one to take things lying down. After 4-5 hours with Dina, I have no idea who she is as a character. She doesn’t get angry, or sad, or happy, or anything. The only thing that I remember is that she would like to have a farm. The same for Jesse. Or any of Abby’s friends. You could change their name and 3D model and the narrative would not be affected one bit. Abby and Ellie, the main characters, are fleshed out just a little more but that’s not saying much. Aside from their obvious and in-your-face anger because of the main story arc, there are no nuance to them. They are at best one dimensional characters.
To make things worse, there is an overemphasis on LGBT themes and traits. That in itself is not wrong but it is just too much on the nose. It gets jarring with the settings and the overall narrative without even adding anything to the story. You have a somber story about loss and revenge, set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world, and somehow, LGBT rights and representation has to be shoehorned in. Let’s compare it to my favourite LGBT character of all time, Sophia Burset in Orange is the New Black (played by real life transgendered actress Laverne Cox). Her existence in the series wasn’t for diversity sake. It was to tell her story, her struggle as a father her son, her struggle as a transgender person in prison. But her being transgender wasn’t her character trait. It was her sassiness, her flaws, her love for her son.
And so, all this adds up to an overall story where events unfold and you cannot care less about how they affect the characters because you cannot relate to them at all. I didn’t care that the events were shocking or dangerous. I didn’t care which character lived or died. And that’s the problem with TLOU2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Before I get into the game, I want to say that I couldn’t care less about any of the “politics” injected into the game. Yes, there is LGBT aspects to the game. I personally don’t agree with leftist ideology on homosexuality, so I tried to concentrate just on the story, environments and gameplay. With that being said, let’s get into The Last of Us Part 2. Gameplay - Similar to the first game, which isn’t a bad thing. You’re encouraged to explore the environment to scavenge for supplies which are hard to come by as they should be. Gun play feels fluid and responsive but isn’t too easy at the same time. When your character is under stress, your aim will shake more versus when you aren’t spotted. You’re now able to use high grass to hide from enemies as well as crawl under cars and other objects to hide. The AI is also much improved and will work together to find and kill you; nowhere is safe as they will literally check everywhere. My gameplay score is a solid 9/10. Graphics - 10/10 everything looks incredible, moving on...

Level design - again, 10/10. I really loved post apocalyptic Seattle and California, everything looked great and was fun to explore. Alright, here we go...STORY. Story - So, I can understand why so many people are so upset about the story and at certain points, I was really not liking it, but hear me out. I’ll sum up the story as quickly as I can and I’m only going to focus on the main points. The game starts off in Jackson, where the first game ends. Joel and Tommey go out on a patrol and end up running into a stranger running from a hoard of infected. They save this stranger and end up with this strangers group. Joel and Tommey reveal their names to them and then we learn that Joel was the whole reason they were there, to kill him. So this stranger (her name is Abby) kills Joel with a golf club and Ellie ends up coming in as it’s happening. After this Ellie sets out to get revenge. Ellie makes her way to Seattle and ends up killing all of Abby’s friends, but not Abby. We then play another 6 hours as Abby and they reveal that Abby’s father is the surgeon that was going to operate on Ellie to develop a vaccine. They go into more backstory on her relationships with different people but none of it is very relevant or very interesting (I had almost no interest in this part of the game, it’s pretty boring). Ellie and Abby end up fighting, Abby wins, and then she leaves saying “don’t ever let me see you again.” Ellie ends up back with her lover, Dina, (she’s a pretty pointless character). But, Ellie can’t live with the fact that she didn’t avenge Joel and that Abby got away. So Ellie sets back out to get revenge and kill Abby. She finds Abby in California who had gotten captured by another faction called the Rattlers. She kills all the Rattlers and finds Abby nearly dead hanging by her wrists from a pole on a beach right outside the Rattlers main camp. They fight, but this time Ellie wins. Right before she’s about to kill Abby she lets her go and says “get the **** out of here.” Abby leaves and Ellie returns home to find her lover, Dina, has left her. The End. The obvious message being, forgive and forget. When you seek vengeance, you lose everything in the process, and at the end of the day, it wasn’t going to bring Joel back. Obviously I’ve left a lot of backstory out as there are many flashbacks that dive deeper into both characters (Ellie’s and Abby’s) stories, but that’d be way too much to explain. Overall, I didn’t hate the game and I didn’t love it. It left me feeling very empty and unfulfilled in the end, but maybe that’s how I should feel, maybe that’s the art of it, that selfish vengeance will only leave you feeling empty. Story - 4/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll try to not give in to fanboyism or being too butthurt about the events in the game.

I have finished the game the day after release, not necessarily because it was so good but because I wanted to know how it >all unfolded. The game is, as was part 1 back on ps3, a masterpiece in terms of graphics and immersion. The world is beautiful, the fact that all enemies refer to eachother by their first name, call out to those that disappeared because of my actions. It's all great. The combat is a bit more fluent than game 1, and has a bit more options but it basically is the same experience, which is fine by me.

The story is a bit difficult to grade. They have tried to show how hate breeds hate, and how it utterly destroys people. It's an interesting subject to explore, and at times I felt for Abby, the dog Alice, Owen and the kids. But a lot of other sequences I flat out didn't want to play, that feeling amplified to the max when I was actually hunting ellie.. I hated it.
And that's what it boils down to, the intentions of the game aren't bad.. It's an interesting concept to explore but why in this universe, why with these characters. You are built up to love these 2 in game 1, become invested. And in game 2 they both meet devastating ends. Joel beaten to death in a gruesome way and ellie completely mentally torn down brick by brick, physically mutilated. And it just doesn't swing home because of it.. The story doesn't bring satisfaction due to a combination of horror (for horrors sake) and a last act that is so contrived, nonsensical and flat out annoying. I want to love the game, and in all fairness, this game doesn't deserve the rating it gets on here at all, but a game that leans on narrative has to make sure that the narrative pays off... And it just does t. Best moment would be the when you face Tommy and he nearly kills us. Loved it. Rooted for him.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is somewhat opposite of the first in terms of momentum. While the first builds up tension, emotional moments and ends in a huge climatic sequence, the part 2 builds up momentum up to the middle of the game, when you play Abby. From then on, it feels an unnecessary addition, as if the producers needed to justify the death of Joel. Joel had lots of reasons to die, and no less in a horrible way, so the idea to emphasize Abby's story feels kinda bloated.
On top of that, the final sequence is so utterly absurd - somewhat Die Hard vs Rocky - that it becomes a parody.

The game could have been great, even with Joel's death at the beginning, but the producers wanted to create a convoluted story with the idea that "nobody is truly bad/good", which is fundamentally wrong and childish.

Gameplay is good, graphics are good, sound is really good.

But the story, lost me halfway through and I could not get back to the tension building of the first half.

While the graphics are beautiful, and the combat much better than the first game, I can't help but hate the story. It just doesn't make sense, and in the end it's a series of pointless events that I have a hard time believing anyone would actually make. The game ended, and I felt that I had wasted the last 25 hours. I feel that the character of Abby was brought into the story in the worst possible way, and when your (nearly) first encounter with a new character is witnessing them commit a truly heinous act, you can't realistically expect from that point on that anything you present to try and show the "good side" of that character will have any meaningful effect. If we are introduced to a character as a monster, no amount of backstory or "point of view" storytelling will sway that initial impression. I also disliked how the events of the beginning of the game changed Ellie, she's much colder and cynical than she was in the first game, and her dynamic with Joel was one of my favorite aspects of that game. This sequel is also just too dark, there is no (or very very little) lightness in any of the storytelling or dialogue, and there's no balance. It's a shame, because aside from the storytelling every other aspect of this game is gorgeous and brilliant. Sad. Expand

I’m hoping he proves me wrong with part 3 but for now, the Last of Us Part 2 is not worth your attention at full price. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first several hours are absolutely stunning. Insane graphics, well developed gameplay and your two beloved characters back together. But after Joel gets killed the game takes a turn not only for the worse, but for the worst. The new characters are stale and you don't feel any bonding with them whatsoever. You simply do not care about them. Dina, your new gf? I hoped for her to just die until the end. There was nothing likeable about her except for her willingness to support Ellie on her revenge trip. Jesse? Nice guy but gets shot in the stupidest way ever. Owen - the guy you begin to like and understand when being forced to play half the game with exactly that character that had just murdered Joel in cold blood in the most brutal way? Gets killed before switching to Abby, playing her worth the knowledge that this dude will eventually get stabbed. Lev, the former scars girl/guy who ends up with Abby? No connection until the end. The storytelling is thin and had no density considering the enormous length of the game. Additionally, I never knew when the end would finally come. You prepare yourself to finish the game just to have another 5h filler element, tackling a problem that never feels to be of interest or in the characters interest. The ultimate ending is non logical and leaves you shaking your head and asking yourself: why the eff did I just struggle myself through that game when story wise all that was happening was that Joel died and then you stumbled across a world (albeit beautifully looking) with faceless and blindly interchangeable characters. As mentioned in the beginning - the game starts strong but turns out to be a long and repetitive story that struggles to build up the atmosphere and bonding abilities from the first part, but gives you no greater goal to strife for, no character development (rather the opposite) and have you play your hated arch enemy for 50% of the game without giving you any feeling of understanding of getting close to liking that character. I wished for Ellie to simply kill Abby in the end, but even that wish didn't come true and leaves you completely up in the air. The feeling of utter disappointment reminds me of the ending of mass effect 3. Expand

The Last of Us: Part II has some very smooth satisfying gameplay, excellent sound design, attention to detail, detailed gory violence, and some great art direction. The story however, really weighs it down.

Awesome gameplay, graphics and music, 10/10 on that department, the story tho, it is not that great, it is a basic story of revenge, Abby's side of the story is too long and it should not interrupt the flow of Ellie's story like that, it kills the pacing, plus Abby's story has a lot of filler, which make the game suffer. Plus, we can't fully like Abby, she killed Joel, so we will never like her, but at the end I agreed with Ellie's decision, but still playing like a character we do not care about is not fun. It does not deserve the hate it gets, but it surely does not deserve to be called a masterpiece, I give it a solid 7/10, there is worse things with better score, so it should not be that low. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a complete mess of a story. The writing, the pacing, and the excessive switching between characters, flashbacks, and timelines show how poorly this was executed. The characters, who we knew and loved in the first game, are butchered in their sequel. Worse, we're expected to care about these new, yet uninteresting ones, that are shoved upon our throats for the second half of the game. Apart from it's messy plot and disengaging characters, it was mostly the immersive combat, amazing graphics, and lengthy narrative that lifted this game for it's entire worth.

Ellie is no longer the defiant, joke-loving girl we adored in the first. No, she's taken a darker and more brutal path towards the concept of vengeance. Evidently, this makes Ellie a dry and uninteresting person to play as. Contrary to the trailers, we only get to play Joel for less than 5 minutes throughout the whole game, and his death is already shown before we even get our bearings. As for Dina, her character is alright. However, her relationship with Ellie felt as if the LGBT+ agenda was more emphasized, instead of having actual chemistry and character development between the two. It's as if Naughty Dog wanted to push the boundaries of socio-political inclusiveness with this one. For the amount of time I got to spend with Abby, I found myself engaging with her character a little but not enough to actually care. Abby and her crew had some interesting parts to them, yet their roles and characters soon degraded throughout the story’s progression. As for Owen, he was probably the worst of them all. Besides his creepy personality and confusing relationship with Abby, it felt like Owen served no real purpose in the game. None of them did. It’s as if the crew was mainly used for Abby’s character development, so the player would hopefully “like” her and see things from her perspective. I get the whole moral, but it just didn’t work for this one.

Storywise, the entire thing is a jumbled mess. The timelines, the transitions, and the flashbacks are excessive and suspense killing. As you play, you will find yourself jumping timelines and characters, switching between Abby and Ellie for the initial part of the game, and then finding yourself in a random flashback minutes later. Jumpscares are common but they lack suspense to build upon. As a result, everything becomes so cliche and predictable that you’ll eventually get bored. Gameplay-wise, it’s really good. The combat is well designed and the crafting system is like it used to be. However, there were some limitations I encountered when using the skill/pill system. Although it offers multiple branches for a different set of skills, It seems that each skill branch has to unlock it’s first skill before the second one could be. Therefore, you can’t spend pills on one skill before unlocking the one previous to it. As for combat, human NPC’s are really smart. Even at moderate difficulty, I constantly found myself being flanked, cornered, or flushed by enemies. Hounds will sniff you out if you don’t keep moving. There isn’t enough time to hide in bushes or covers because enemies will always keep you on your toes. Evidently, this renders stealth approaches difficult to execute.

In addition to your common runners, clickers, and bloaters from the previous game, Part 2 introduces a new collection to their zombie arsenal. For starters, Stalkers are too quiet to be seen in listen mode, and they’ll pounce from the shadows if you get too close. Shamblers are similar to bloaters. However, they excrete gas explosions at close range instead of throwing them like a bloater does. There are also zombies that hide in fungal growths in the walls, waiting for the chance to attack. During the later part of Abby’s gameplay, you’ll encounter something entirely different and much deadlier.

I respect Neil Druckmann for approaching Part 2 differently. Unfortunately, that approach never really delivered. Abandoning where the game left off, Naughty Dog forgets what made The Last of Us memorable. Instead, the characters we knew and loved were unfairly butchered and destroyed in the sequel, and in return, we’re forced to familiarize ourselves with new and loathsome ones. Although the combat and gameplay was a treat to experience, and the crafting system encouraged resourcefulness and practicality, the game’s messy writing, story progression, and lack of believability for it’s characters drags players along it’s lengthy narrative. Not only did the Last of Us Part 2 discredit its predecessor, it failed to carry whatever point it had in the beginning. Consequently, I don’t believe this game deserves the exaggerated threes and zeroes it earned. believed it deserves a 10 for compelling gameplay, graphics, length, and combat. However, minus 4 for choice of story, bringing it down to a strong 6.

The problem came in around the half way point of the game where there's a sudden character switch at an important point in the story. This leaves two issues. First, this screws up the pacing of the game. The timeline started going everywhere, backwards, then forwards, then backwards, without any real push to the main story line, making it less coherent and focused. Secondly, no one really cares nor wants to play as this newcomer, and the game REALLY forces you to like and sympathize with this character, which of course gives the opposite effect and makes you dislike playing as the character even less. By the end of the game, it became a total drag to even play and finish. The story, and the game, gradually feels pointless and exhausting. That might be the intention of the devs, but I can't say I could rate a game that actively making me dislike it as time go on a good game.
Gameplay is decent. Graphics and voice acting are phenomenon. It's a shame that the most important aspect of the game, the story, is cheapened by shock value, emotional manipulation, poor writing, and worst of all, moral preaching. One of the best things about the first game was the moral ambiguity of the characters. There was no good or bad, right or wrong, just desperate people. In the last of us 2, all of that is gone. There are now clear black and white, with plenty of moral preaching and guilt tripping being thrown around, when you are NOT given any choices throughout the game. It comes off especially self-righteous, given the first game was done so well on this front.

The bond between Joel & Ellie was intoxicatingly beautiful. And when I heard the sequel announced years ago I was beyond excited. Even though the first game was a close shut experience. But ngtl the more I heard about this the last two years the more I was dreading it. Up until the release date I was scared it would ruin what its predecessor accomplished in gaming. Did it? Well yeah. Okay let’s do this. To start off, the story is eh compared to its legendary counterpart. And I love Ellie don’t get me wrong but—she’s not compelling as a main character which is why she worked well as a supporting character. This game had to invent an arc for her by destroying a more rich character’s narrative. The arc of Joel was tremendous and this game just throws it away for a **** revenge plot that goes no where. It was a crime to fans. Now all my criticisms lay with the narrative as the game is gorgeous! Definitely a technical achievement. The combat is more enhanced even though it’s your basic over the shoulder mechanics. Ngtl there was intense moments and I was zoned in. But going back to the plot, why was this game made? I’m here for story. The continuation of these characters &this world. Which could’ve been done so much better. The only time I got any levity was the flashbacks of Joel & Ellie which instead made me want to play the first game instead. Which in return made me more depressed. The reason for a character arc or a hero’s journey is to learn or grow from what the story drives the character. Which worked for Joel and him overcoming the death of his daughter in Ellie—but here no one learns a damn thing, even from an empty arc. And it’s not like I’m saying the game is bad. I as a narrative appreciater is just trying to understand why this sequel was made besides to piss off a dedicated fan base. I’m still mixed on this. And I’m happy people love it. But I expected more. Especially with its god tier predecessor. That should’ve been left well enough alone.

On paper, the Last of Us 2 has everything it needs to be an instant classic (Shame that multiplayer wasn't included). It was breathtaking graphic, slick and immersive gameplay, and a great amount of accessibly (especially when it comes to difficulty setting). However, everything great about the game from an artistic and technical level is bogged down by one of the worst narratives I've ever experienced. It is Last Jedi and Game of Thrones Season 8 levels of bad, and completely tarnished what me and so many other adored about the first game. Rather than being a continuation of Joel and Ellie's story, Joel is instead thrown the way side for a new character named Abby, who you are forced to play as for a good portion of the game. Abby is one of the most unlikable and irredeemable characters ever in a video game, and honestly deserved to die. But instead, the game forces upon you an incredibly contrived "revenge is bad" narrative that is at odds with how many players will feel while playing. The game is so bleak and depressing that I honestly had a hard time finishing, and to say that the ending was unsatisfying would be a massive understatement.
As the Fireflies would say, "when you're lost in the darkness, look for the light", but the Last of Us 2 seeks to avoid the light at all costs, and it results in an experience that I honestly wish I didn't waste my time with. If you enjoy the game, that's fine, but for me, it is a great insult to what made the original special, and should not exist.
To everyone who said that the Last of Us didn't need a sequel, you were right.

    Things I didnt like:
    - Abby. This was the perfect moment to introduce a very strong transgender character: the world is **** people are becoming crazy, so it makes perfect sense for someone to question their sexuality, beliefs and other. But she does nothing to depict the benefit of her being transsexual, or the character traits to affect the story: aside from a meaty scene and couple very flat jokes, she could have been a guy and nothing would have changed. A missed opportunity.

    - Story. Seemed out of place, rushed - the story would feel much more compelling if some events appeared earlier than the others, it feels like order was screwed. And overall, it was quite predictable.
    - Gameplay: combat still sucks ass, very slow and clunky, especially during escape sequences. I guess controller limitations, but hey... it is literally painful to aim sometimes.
    - Ending: Subverting expectations, in the worst way, the last jedi way. won't spoil, but whatever you have done in game is literally thrown in the garbage bin, since apparently it was not needed and a character does 180 emotional transformation.

Cons: Doing a list during my play through, I decided to enumerated at the end from lesser to top cons.

    1. the level design, if is well deliver that feeling of open world after a few minutes exploring the area becomes actually very small with a lot of "exploration rooms" where you will find a forgotten note, material or a bullet. Basically all the levels are pretty linear and the game doesn't take the effort to at least dissimulate.

    2. characters: without counting for Ellie, Tommy or Joel for coming already from the first part, the rest of the characters are completely forgettable, with plain reason and actions that most of the time you will notice doesn't have sense. Introductions seems forced and the moments when they are cooperating with Ellie is just basically, you can take it off of the gameplay making a solo adventure and will not feel different.

    3. the story and dialogues, from cheesy lines that seems take it from a fan fiction forum to the whole story happening in the game. Contradiction actions to the personality of players and "forgettable" moments when the character say something to do something completely opposite 5 minutes later and the dialogues are "fine, nothing, good." The whole story is filled with holes, lame excuses and forced topics.
and 4 (and the worst in my opinion), the length of the game is 22-25 hrs plus for a game that could basically wrap everything in much much less. Unnecessary cut scenes and stealth moments that you basically going to say **** it" and cross from point A to B to trigger the next cut scene. Because is unnecessary long.

I wouldn't recommend it to buy it. If the game was in offer, I will think about it because only for the graphics, physics, art, etc is a solid 10. From the point of view of characters, dialogues, story, puzzles, etc. A solid 0

The players wanted to see what happened to Joel and Ellie after the first game.
They knew that they were headed to Jackson, are we were expecting to see something more during their time in Jackson.
Instead of that, we only get a few drawings and words written in Ellie's diary about some previous events that happened in Jackson, and we also get a beloved character with their skull smashed with a golf club in the first 30 minutes of the game, which could be avoided if the writers didn't make the character DUMB and kept it as they were before.

Funny thing about this, is that Naughty Dog needed to have some of their fans to explain why certain characters did certain actions, when THEY should be the ones to do that, by explaining it IN THE GAME.

    [spoiler] :
Abby smashed Joel's skull with a golf club. Abby didn't know how Joel looked like, but knew his first and last name, his age and where he was.
Joel never trusted anybody in the first game and refused to tell his name. In this game, he tells his name in the middle of a group of dozens of people, knowing how many people he has killed in the past.
This is not an "accident". They've made Joel dumb.
The worst part is, many people justify this as "this is what happened when Joel let his guard down".

    This is laughable.

The best part of the story, is the flashbacks (which is around 2 or 3 hours of gameplay). The rest just feels "meh" and predictable. You could tell where the story was going after Joel's death.
The writers made us think that this story would be ground-breaking, and it was you typical revenge story, expect, in the end, you don't kill the villain (for some reason).

For a game that relies heavily on story, the most important part of the game is truly disappointing.

Now let's talk about the rest.
    - The graphics are gorgeous (as expected)
    - The audio is top notch
    - The actors did a tremendous job, despite people not liking certain characters, You can't deny that. Really well done.
    - The accessbility options are something that, hopefully, will become a standard from now on
    - The gameplay is the same as the previous game. There's nothing new to it, besides new weapons and a jump button (which you'll only use it 2 or 3 times because you have to)

There's nothing in the game that makes it a 10/10 game.

It's fun to shoot and kill people and zombies, take photos with the in-game Photo Mode, but that's it.

"Revenge is a fool's game" - You don't need to spend your money on this game to find out something that you could've found out in 2018. Save your money and spend it on things that you really need, specially in these though times.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Joel would not have trusted unknown people in this way and I do not understand why leaving Tommy and Ellie alive if they are witnesses, from there I noticed that the story has problems, it makes me think that the characters no longer have common sense and I honestly do not care if the characters are LGBT or not, just as they were heterosexual, this would not change how wrong this story is, contradicting something that was established in the first game. If a story is told well, they don't have to explain anything else to you. On the other hand I applaud Naughty Dog for the technical aspect of the game, the graphics are amazing and the game seems to me very well polished. Expand

disappointing about narrative. especially killing "the person" scene. it's very painful & gross.
If not the expression, I would more positive review at this game.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
