I simply don't understand why they took that path, to get us all pissed like Ellie with the death (the absolutely unbelievable horrible death) of Joel in order to feel and get the sense of revenge. Graphics are stunning that's out of the question, but jesus **** christ this game is TERRIBLE. Ps: c'mon 2020 give us a break. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Even a Score of 90 Points must be a game who is perfect for everyone who like rpg shooters and equals or surpass in every aspect other games with this score. But "TLOU2" is not such a game.

The grafics, the sound are okey, its a nice 85, but the gameplaymechanics are mostly the same as TLOU Part1, some are buffed, but not all. So it cant rise to a 90. But the gameplay is still fun and it works, so its a good 80 score but not a 90 or even a 95+.

But than comes the sequel problem. It don't honor the first game with its story. It try to be diffrent but diffrent equals not useful. For me the story don't pull the right strings. The death of joel feels like a betrail, like Starwars 8, where luke throw away the lightsaber. The developer, who was in charge of the story, betrails me, i don't want such a boring death for this beloved character. And the worst part, its not even logical. Beause he was a lone wolf with cup, he never would do this action that cause his death.

Next problem is the story itselfe. Its a boring story of revange. It would be far more better, if abby capture and torture joel. That you have multible endings like. All die, joel die, allie die and joel life, abby die or all will find a way to life with each other. Even the character abby would be fare more explainable with "i do this because i lost my father and have thîs **** happened to me".

Conclusion... a nice game with 85 after all. But the story and the outdated mechanics cost 10 points, 5 points for not honor the fans who where betraied. Its a nice 70 game. Not more not les. Because a game with 95+ need to be memorable for decades. Even after the first mass effect i know who is shepard, who is tahli and liara. I remember joel and ellie... but abby. i will forget in weeks.

In the end, not a bad game, but not a masterpiece. Like a witcher 3 or an masseffect.

Gameplay is decent. Dodging mechanic is pretty fun. The story, on the other hand, is one of the worst things I have ever seen/played. Completely undermines why i loved the characters of the original. It’s nowhere close to a 10/10 game but it’s not a 0/10 either.

The game has beautiful scenarios, an awesome ost, and a better gameplay than the original. But the history is awful. If the game were one hour shorter, it would be a 9, because I really got happy at the final part. But the epilogue ruined it all. The last chapter, that ending they give to the game is a spit for the fans and the original game.

The story is the heart of a videogame like this, and it just died. I feel like they wanted to defy what we expected and that's totally fine, but there must be a reward behind. Something that makes us feel that everything was worth it. Here that doesn't happen; in fact, it feels like the game punishes you for playing it.

Watched streams on twitch, no emotional attachment to any new characters at all, the characters are boring and forced. Why would the player control a boring character half of the game and the plot doesn’t make any sense.

Will buy 2nd hand game disc for this when everyone turn in at game stores and kill Abby to ease my mind when I control her.

The story is just bad. I don't give 2 balls about Lev or Lara or whatever her name is. I didn't hate playing as Abby as much as I thought I would, but she was still **** boring compared to bae Ellie. In the end, after like 20 hours, we don't even get to murk Abby, we let her go. RIDICULOUS.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I tried really hard to like this game, from the combat, the gameplay mechanics, even to the plot. However I found myself disliking the game, the more I played of it, from the death of Joel, to having to play as his killer and forced to sympathize with her character through some of her missions, and the ending of Ellie not even being able to commit to how far you have to take her character. It’s not good, the first few hours before Joel does, that was good, that felt like maybe Joel and Ellie would find a way to resolve their conflict. I get that what was done in the first games ending, had to have some resolution of its own, but doing it this way was not the way to go for me.
I honestly feel like, this game lost its sense of joy in its dark world. I loved playing as Joel and Ellie in the first game, even how the characters developed. With the sequel, I just can’t get with the narrative and the ending just feels like a slap in the face to the whole adventure. Gameplay wise, I think mechanics could have been upgraded from what was done before, yet I feel like a lot of politics and hypocrisy are also to blame for what became of this game. So many people in industry want to praise this game instead of look at its flaws, and this game has some flaws in both narrative and gameplay. Graphics and animation are great, but they do not save a game if the story isn’t great with it. The character of Abbey that you play as, I hated having to play with her, it wasn’t even just her torturing Joel, it was her character as a whole. I’ll be honest, when this games trailers originally introduced back in 2016, I thought she was Ellie’s mother and that they would explain don what happened to her and how Ellie became immune to begin with. I played Left Behind, I know the story, but that would have been a great way to go and having Ellie and Joel go on an adventure that meshed the two storylines together where they meet in different time periods. The whole cult idea could still be utilized, but I think the game shouldn’t forget about its zombie roots either. I’m sad to see a promising series go this route, and really hope that if something like this is attempted again, that the characters you play as well as the story, aren’t so misguided and without life.

Not as bad as people were making it out to be. The gameplay can be somewhat repetitive, but was fun and satisfying enough to keep me engaged. The story falls to having many detrimental flaws that drag it down to a very low status. Visuals are stunning and when combined with the amazing sound design, an engulfing atmosphere was created and immersed me fully within the brutal setting.

I can essentially sum up this frustrating narrative in three segments.
First 10 Hours: Here is a revenge story! Pretty cut and dry. You hate these people and you're gonna make them pay for it!
Next 10 Hours: Congrats, you took your revenge, and now we're gonna spend a hell of a lot of unnecessary time trying to make you feel bad for it. So let's stop the plot and go on a long sidequest of attempted retrospective character development!
Last 5 Hours: Let's try to reconstruct this ending now that you're all caught up. Oh wait, you shouldn't be mad anymore? Also, Catalina ofcourse.

I rate it a 10/10 for the environment, animation, etc.. basically the art dept. Story should've been handled very differently. Combat is fun...for a while. I'm honestly probably better off keeping TLOU ending as the only ending, and not going into this sequel. Leave it a that.

The same positive things I can say about the core mechanics of this game - fight system received a lot of improvements - you can feel the power of the melee combat, the user interface is much cleaner. The game has a lot of settings which you can adjust to your needs. Huge positive things about that the game has implemented systems to make the game easier for the people who are disabled.

The main problem with this game I have with the character's development and storytelling. In a few words - in during game I don't like about the main characters and second characters. I don't buy them. They are repulsive and boring. The main idea which stays behind this story is good, but implementation looks like that junior team did it.

The poor story shows the poor game loop. At the end of the game, I was done - I didn't want more because I was bored.

Few words to Neil Druckmann - if you don't care about gamers' opinions and you rejected all of them - because - "I DON"T CARE" - okay. In the future, I won't buy any games from Naughty Dog anymore.

They killed Joel, okey, it must be something great, cause they killed main character, beloved character. Why did they kill him? Because he killed doctor who could save world, but he wanted killed Elly... and if we remember end of the 1 part, she didn’t ask her about saving the world, ok she was little girl, Joel big man and did this for her.
    Okey...
Ebby. I didn’t sympathized with her, she is ugly, she could not choose between love and war. What was her motivation to kill tommy, Joel( Joel ,ok, he killed her father, but her father without sin.) Tommy killed her boyfriend? They weren’t in relationships, so... Why did she attach to scars? She murdered them. They saved her life, hmm... I hate this character, because she killed Joel, fu.. Joel.

Elly. She was little girl, she stayed little girl. She killed all guys who was involved in the murder, expect Ebby, because she forgave her. Hmm. Why didn’t she forgive them all? I expected a larger, gubinny plot, thoughtful characters, plot twists, and, ****, ending.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I waited for a few days after i finished the game to rate this game, i want to make sure my mind is cleared before i actually drop the words. The game itself is not a bad game at all, stunning visuals, fun combat (some agree, some not), and duo perspective of both characters is a great idea (but not in a sequel that everyone has been waiting to see what Joel and Ellie next journey. What i hate about this game is the commercials, the content of the ads were lying to everyone's faces that made us think Joel plays a major part of the story, and Dina was the reason for revenge (on the last commercial they posted up a few days before released). Not sure if i can ever trust Naughty Dog again, and i am not excited for a part 3 at all. Part 1 is my favorite, the story was simple and straightforward but very touching. Part 2, you made it too complicated and not everyone is buying it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. my first time on this site, but here we go.

    Pros:
    - very impressive visuals;
    - awesome character animation and performances;
    - satisfying mele combat and stealth;
    - sound design and music;
    - range of accessibility options;

    Cons:
    - the levels feel too big and way too empty, and the exploration feels more like filler and padding to stretch the time than an integral part of the gameplay loop;
    - gunplay and the main gameplay loop, in general, feel dated, not adding much to what we've seen in the first game, and making the later part of the game incredibly drawn out due to the repetitiveness;
    - character models are questionable at times, from the strange proportion of the bodies to some supporting characters looking way too similar;
    - continuation of the previous point - besides looking similar, the new characters are also very 2-dimensional to the point where you don't remember their names after dispatching of them (and the games just ignores them all after their death);
    - MISREPRESENTATION of lgbtq and exploitation tired lgbtq tropes and stereotypes for cheap drama and shock value (i.e. the bisexual character is indecisive between the male and the female love interest; the trans character is all about suffering for being trans)
    - and, finally, the story. shallow, banal revenge plot told in a convoluted mish-mash of flashbacks and flashbacks inside flashbacks, constantly undermining its own message with the gameplay as well as ridiculous amount of offhanded violence with no real gravitas. pre-existing characterizations are changed to serve the new direction, previous events are retconned, all subtlety forgotten.

all in all, considering the amount of work from simple employees who, no doubt, tried to polish every aspect they could, and the stunning result of their work, i don't think it's fair to go with emotions and give it a 0, but i also don't think the story-driven games with terrible writing and so poorly thought through relationships between the plot and the gameplay deserves anything more than 5.

The game's graphics and mechanics are amazing, I haven't encountered many bugs or other things that bother me during the game. Instead, the story of the game is very, very nasty, you are made to play with the enemy just to take more time to make the game last longer. The ending is a very ugly one without logic and that does not ignite any feelings and makes you wonder "what the hell is this".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ive been looking at reviews lately specifically at the last of us 2 and its astounding to me how apparent it becomes after finishing the game that most people review bombing this game havent played the game or watched it. Dont get me wrong this game is flawed but just when I read other peoples reviews they fail to go into depth with what the game is flawed in, so Im here to do exactly that and review the positives as well. I will try and be as unbiased as possible but this is still my personal opinion.

I would like to start off with talking about how the game looks. To me its one of the most gorgeous looking games out there and I personally think that its the most realistic looking one as well, at least for console games. Theres so many litte details everywhere things are placed in certain areas that really didnt need to be there but the devs went the extra mile with detail for this game. This gives the game a good amount of points although I do have some issues with the environment but that goes more into level design.

Now lets talk about the level design and combat
Sometimes I think its magnificent especialy early game! You have these great huge arenas to stealthily move around or to engage in huge firefigts with. The game wants you to get creative with the ways you take out enemies. Sometimes they'll plant infected in certain areas for you to lure them out. It gives you a ton of tools and lets you do what you please with them. Now for the combat there isnt much new to it besides being able to dodge and crawl but they expand on this to the best of their ability and its absolutely stellar for the most part. Now there are some areas of this game especially later on that begin to feel the same as all the others and with a 20+ hour game they start to run out of things to innovate on. I found myself growing tiresome of the combat later on in the game just because of how repetitive it became. This is an issue. Another issue that I ended up having with the level design of the game is that there can be to much fluff. The game begs you to go from one area to another and follow the characters all the way which can be great for putting you into the shoes of the character however this also adds certain segments of the game that could've just been cut entirely to make the game far less repetitive and more enjoyable. Another issue is that some areas can look climbable but in reality are not and can be largely misleading. Sometimes I felt the design didnt do a good job at guiding you where to go.

Now lets talk about the infamous story mode Ill try not to get into to much spoiler territory but be warned for minor ones
To me its deeply flawed but not for the same reasons people are saying. Ive noticed a lot of people saying that this game caters to much to the lgbt community and sjws because of the lesbianism and the fact that everyone thought Abby was a trans gender even though shes not. In reality this isnt even a proper critique of the game, I would say that if Abby was a trans and the game attempted to say that its ok to be trans and its ok to kill straight white men then yes it would be a proper critique but the game doesnt do any of this. There are 2 gay characters in the game and the game doesnt even have enough depth to explain why theyre gay! This is my biggest critique of the games story is that it lacks character depth. We see our characters find friends and families but at time the game seems to believe that the only way to develop a character is to make them somehow more charismatic when there not engaged with violence. It lacks a good amount of depth for most of the side characters. Even with Ellie its not clear as to why she latched on to her girlfriend and her ex. Now onto the actualy story and its themes. Something I actually liked about the game was its themes about revenge. Ive seen many people critique the themes for being to simplistic but does making themes of a game more complex really make the themes better? I think its how they choose to achieve these themes. I think the idea of making you kill certain characters and then putting you into the shoes of the friends of those said characters is an excellent way to cause guilt and empathy for these characters. Its very harsh and thats what I think a lot of people on here dislike about the game. They complain about the game being to sensitive and catering to the lgbt community and then complain about its insensitivity in killing a certain character. Its a bit hypocritical if you ask me. On to my next critique of the story. The lack of pacing that this game has can make it feel nauseating. I thought the game would end 3 hours earlier then it really did and at that point I was hoping for it. If theres one thing this game knows how to do its dragging. Now Im running low on characters but I didnt think that the story was god awful. It was a let down for sure but put this with the other pros and this can be a solid game that overstays its welcome

With last of us 2 base of the problem is the story tries to be not like last of us 1. Meybe writers does not even understand the story telling tricks of last of us 1 and what type of story it is, why it worked, i think Neil Druckmann delusionaly belives last of us 1 to be something more then what it is and because of that he thinks his "genius-ness" of masterful and complex story telling is the reason why people love last of us 1, this delusion turns his confidence into a trap and eventualy causes the downfall of the story in the last of us 2. Last of us 2 acts a lot like kojima games, and it takes huge inspirations from games like mgs2 sons of liberty, and death stranding among others. now taking inspriration does not mean you are not being innovative, you cannot start from 0. every thing is build on top of the things come before but if you are litteraly the flag ship of the gaming industury, i think you should be more innovative but not simply take unnecicery risks, after all you are making a product not just art. last of us 2 fails at taking necicery risk and making them worth it, while i appresiate the taken risks in first few hours of the game, i think these risksl will put so many people down that already payed 60 dolars to the game and there is no goind back at that point. Marketing of the game is trying so hard to hide these things and i think this is a big f*** you to these people because,it pusposefully missinforms the customer. It is almost like "if you dont agree with us you are dumb and we know better you better be agreeing with us because you dont have much choice, you eiter already wasted your money or continue playing the game and try to agree with us."and it sucks. Now lets talk about innovation and inspiration part. Again last of us 2 takes a lot of inspiration from kojima, it acts like kojima games, but it does try to innovate on a genius material without being genius.they deffinitly do not understand the mecanics of the desing on inspired material, they just focus on the shiny parts of tricks kojima uses, and they do not study how kojima makes them work.Kojima always makes his games self-conscious even tho he wants to make movies,he knows he makes games.Last of us 2 is not self-conscious it wants to be a movie but it is not, becausese of this mistake gameplay becomes a drag and immersion braking, pacing is bad,it tries so hard to humanize the enemies for the sake of being a movie like experience but ai becomes predictable and robotic after some time, combat encounters almost always plays the same it act like giving choice to the player but choices player makes do not vary compared to the encounter count at some point in the story main character of the game starts to torture someone they hates, at this point you already understand the "genius messege" of the game but game gives you the control and the only thing you can do is press a button that tortures the person, there is no other ways to proggres the game, you know the main character has lost it and what they are doing is wrong but game thinks it is genius and treats you like an idiot, this is the main problem with last of us 2, it is constantly forced in every way, writing/story telling/gamplay, it belives it self too much so it does not realize the problems it has. and i as a person that payed money and time to this game, i think i have the right to say i expect a more proffesional product from the cutting edge production level of the gaming industry.

As of the final of this review i would like to example my critique with few fancy and blunt but meaningful sentences.

"Last Of Us Part II is not a game but a bad movie"

"Baby's first 'I have a message to deliver' story"

    "The Walking Dead with teenegers"

"It is a technical masterpiece, but it is a bad game"

If i have to do something i normally would not do, reggarding the metacritic scores controversy, i would give it a 7 out of 10.

Sorry for my writing i already wasted 4 hours writing this review im too lazy and tired to go through and fix all of this, i hope you understand the points im trying to make.

I"m less than 10 hrs in and I am having so much trouble getting through it. It's so slow. And that might change but even if it does, it just simply doesn't have much to offer gameplay wise. You run around scavenging for single bullets for 5 minutes sometimes in the dark and you hope you might run into zombies or in this game other people too but even if you do all you do is sneak around and try to stealth kill them and sometimes leave traps and sometimes shoot one or three or your 10 bullets. Then for another 10-15 minutes or longer you look for another door or another power switch to open another door but you have to run in circles and check 8 other doors to find the right one to open. Most reviews do not like the story but i have no issues necessarily with the risks they took with it. that's their choice and just bc ppl don't like it doesn't mean it's bad. The gameplay however is poorly paced, slow, lacking, and honestly possibly the most boring game i've played this year. For me this game is like a 3 or a 4. For most people I think you'll find it a 7. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay is a step up from the original with new and smoother animations, introduced mechanics and a few extra craftables and player upgrades available. I certainly had fun exploring Seattle and Santa Barbara in all its glory. The visuals and sound effects are second to none and the amount of detail in each level is remarkable. HOWEVER, the story and characters are something else entirely. Joel has been around since outbreak day and has always had trust issues when it comes to people e.g. He sees an ‘injured’ man in Pittsburgh and knows it’s a trap straight away. He leaves a family on the side of the road at the start of tlou. Yet the writing in this game is so bad that we’re expected to believe he’s going to tell a bunch of strangers his name, about the settlement and where they’re living, and then stand in the middle of the room surrounded and helpless like a deer in the headlights. It’s tragic when Joel dies but what’s worse is the ludicrously unbelievable way in which it happens. This is why people are pissed, not because Joel is dead, but because of how he dies. Even before his death the writers have undone everything from the first game as the relationship between Joel and Ellie is uncomfortable from the start of part 2. I would have preferred Ellie to have found out the truth about the fireflies at the very end of part 2, thus not tainting her relationship with Joel as well as justifying why she spared Abby as she realises Joel deserves to die for his actions. After finishing the game some 25 hours later, I can tell you the story continues its downward trend throughout, with choppy flashbacks and a skewed timeline; it’s as if the writers dropped the script and then couldn’t put the pages back the right way so just went with it anyway. Character development is lacking, I found myself caring more about the death of Tess after 30 minutes of gameplay in tlou than the death of characters like Jesse and whatever Levs’ sister’s name is after hours of playing with them in tlou2. There’s millions of other points to touch on about this game but I’m already repeating what thousands of fans have already said. It’s a shame a storyline as remarkable as tlou is brought down by an unnecessary sequel. Also lack of factions is very disappointing. Ignore all the stupid 0/10. Even if you think the story is hot garbage, the game itself is enjoyable and the immersion of the world is impeccable. Anything less than 3-4/10 would be a false review from someone who is; joining the bandwagon of hate, reached Joel’s death and is angry, believes that the directors and writers have an agenda to push. You don’t spend 7 years making a game to push an agenda onto the world.

No Spoilers - Honest High Level Review.

I divide this review into 2 main parts, technical aspects and story.

    1. Technical: The Last of Us Part II is an absolute masterpiece if you look at the quality of the game play, graphics and overall atmosphere of the game. All the levels are beautifully crafted, the weapons are smooth and lethal, the violence is raw and the levels are scary and emotional. Because of this, I don't blame the developers or designers at Naughty Dog, they've done an incredible job and should be praised and compensated for it.

    2. Story: The piece that breaks the experience and the reason why there are so many negative reviews. Simply put, the story makes no sense. Key and beloved character murdered in almost the first hour of game play seems to imply that the game will be fast paced but the game ends up taking 25+ hours to finish. From the murder scene mentioned, nothing happens outside of a couple deaths of characters that you don't even get to know. The story ends without anything major happening, the last scene is one that could be blamed for the debacle. The last couple hours of game play should have never been included in the game, again, absolutely nothing happens but a symbolic loss of flesh (sounds weird and it is).

Conclusion: it's pretty easy to say that the Last of Us series is done. Taking into account the story of this game and the negative reaction of the public, I can almost guarantee that it won't even cross the mind of Neil Druckmann to create another part for this series. On a personal note, I was amazed by the quality of the game play but extremely disappointed by the story and the choices made in this game. One big let down that will be hard to forget.

If ND really wanted me and others to like Abby, they should’ve made her spare Joel (who had just rescued her from certain death), thus ruining their whole revenge idea for the rest of the game. What does this mean? They should’ve scrapped this terrible plot. Out of all the directions they could have taken this once great story, the direction they went was just incredibly bad. Why not make another dr/scientist character who was able to find a cure, only to fail at the end after Ellie willingly lets them kill her if you wanted to really tug at my heartstrings. That could have been a huge amount of gameplay if the goal in the story was to find the cure like it was last time. Other good ideas would include... having that creepy cult be full of immune people and purposely, even forcefully breeding to make more immune (pure) people and would better explain why they’d want to kill other people and having it revealed that the team with the scientist who may have a cure has been kidnapping and killing these immune people over and over to find the cure and failing before they even attempted it with Ellie. Then a revenge story would make sense. Dina and/or Joel, hell, even Abby would want revenge against them for lying to Ellie. Or the cultists could have kidnapped Ellie, discovering her immunity and trying to force her to breed. That would be a compelling story about rescue/and escape. If they had taken a different course, Abby could’ve been likable and even friends with Ellie. This entire thing was just a slog. I couldn’t believe I had to go through that huge traversal with Abby, knowing she was going to find her friends dead... where’s the suspense in that? I truly didn’t care about what I was doing for most of this game. I was really hoping to see some characters actually make more good decisions in this game. I don’t know why they decided to make most of the characters dullards with no emotional intelligence. Why not give them the ability to have conversations and empathy that could avoid violence. In the first game we see the separation of evil people and good people. Guy protecting spunky girl who reminds him of his daughter vs. cannibals and merciless highway robbers. In the end he makes a tough choice that puts him in a grey area, but those In this game we are forced over and over again to murder people who we don’t really want to because of nonsensical decisions. Sure it’s a complicated world with monsters around every corner, and no therapists, but Jesus, give us some hope for humanity. I was extremely disappointed by the events of this story. Bleak indeed. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Never thought id be the type of person to write a review like this for a game but here i go....

to start off, the graphics are very impressive and also the slight improvements to combat and stealth systems are very welcome but i think what the game lacks, and is quite important to the last of us is the story. i don't think the story is as bad as people say it is nor do i think it is better or even close to how good TLOU was. Is it fair to say the reason why people don't like the story is because of LGBT inclusion? absolutely not. i think it is ridiculous to say that people hate this game because of that. sure, it might be the reason that a VERY select few dislike the game but i feel this criticism of people who disliked the game has been completely blown out of the water. i would like to point out that i have no problem with gay people or trans people and i feel like i need to saw that which to me is also very ridiculous, it is very clear in The last of us DLC that Ellie is attracted to women, is that problem? no. is Abby being trans a problem? No, not at all. my problem with the use of a trans character in a game that is set 25 years into a zombie apocalypse, im fairly certin there are more important things to worry about than wanting to transition from male to female.

Talking more about what happens to Joel, i tihnk that it was fairly obvious that something bad was going to happen to him. of course he is a beloved character and nobody including my self wanted something to happen to him but unfortunately, thats the way it worked out. Joel definitly deserved to go out in a more fitting way for his character but what has been done is done.

    THE ENDING....

This for me is the reason why i decied to write this. is it a good ending? no, absolutly not. is it a bad ending? definitly not as bad as people are saying it is. of course people are entitled to their opinions of how the ending is but i feel like it is exactly how naughty dog wanted the game to end, no one really wins. Ellie can't play the geetar, she loses dina and the baby, she loses joel and id say she loses herself in that she is no longer the bright spark that we know her to be while she is younger. Abby too loses everything, she loses her friends, her love interest and her ties to what is practicaly her family (The WLF) and i feel that having this ending of Ellie leaving behind the guitar is pretty much leaving her past behind and she is walking away from it. one thing im scared of is seeing a TLOS part 3 which i hope is jesus never comes true as seeing Abby escape on the boat with lev makes me feel like this is what naughty dog are trying to do.

Now. i gave this game a very unstable 6 as i feel like TLOU Part 2 still manages to capture the emotion of how we feel about Joel and Ellie. i cried when Joel died and i the amazing flashbacks of Joel and ellie made me tear up every time i saw them, even now when i watch the museum one it really makes me tear up. overall 2 of the 6 rating is for the story, its not a bad story but it is not good. the other 4 for the rating is based on the graphics and gameplay, im not having these things as the main factors to my rating because as i mention TLOU and TLOU Part 2 are dependent on the story to bed good. bad story = bad game.

6/10 is my final score. good graphics, average gameplay and a fairly poor story but definitly not as bad as people say

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's super underwhelming as the sequel to what I think is actually the best story ever told in a game. I understand what they were going for but it's just so boring. They keep hammering home this idea that revenge and the cycle of violence is bad. No **** That's not an interesting idea, everybody knows that. I'm stunned people keep saying "this game makes you think," because unless you're a serial killer, it really doesn't. Of course Abby had a reason to want to kill Joel. Of course revenge and violence will **** up your mental state, of course it can ruin your life. Who thinks otherwise? This central idea is so boring and lame.

Further, the characters are utter disappointments. Abby, who I initially hated for clubbing Joel, was the only one that I think was well developed. Jesse, a character we meet very early on and one of Ellie's core friends, is killed by Abby as he opens a door, and then after that he is mentioned ONCE hours later. It's like he never existed. Lev's sister dies, and Lev is disturbed for a bit and then she's never mentioned ever again. We play with Dina for a bit, then we leave her in a theatre and never play with her again, and she's basically just always in the theatre. Abby's friends are even less interesting, except for Owen. Mel is.. a medic and pregnant, and that's it. We know nothing else except then she dies and we're supposed to feel bad because she was pregnant. Nora - I remember nothing about, except that she dies interrogated by Ellie. Who is she? What does she like? Where'd she come from|? Who knows. So many of these characters just feel like fillers and throwaways, and the few interesting characters aren't really developed. Isaac was interesting - how'd he get to the top of the WLF, where's he from - we don't know and we see him once talk with him and then next time we see him he gets shot and killed and never mentioned again. Manny seemed interesting and was a funny guy and then he gets shot next to Abby and she never mentions him again. Overall the characters are uninteresting, some are underdeveloped, and they're generally very weak.

Gameplay is fine - it's basically the same from TLOU1 except you have a few new toys like trapmines, but it's basically the same. Not bad, not good just good enough, which is fine because in the first game, it didn't need to be good because of how the story held up the game. But here, the story fails, and then the gameplay fails because it becomes repetitive. By the end, I was so tired of doing the same **** over and over again. Put a trapmine there, stealth kill here, throw a molotov there, throw a bottle and grab him and then kill him. Over and over and over and over. Frankly, it was extremely boring by the end.

The visuals, acting, and music in this game are top-notch. Absolutely amazing, possibly the best I've ever seen, although I think the music in the first game was marginally better. The acting especially is straight movie quality - I think Ashley johnson hit it out of the park, and Troy Baker had one scene that I think was the best acted scene in the game (the last cutscene). Abby's actor was amazing as well, and although some of her moments weren't as emotional to me, that's less because of her acting ability and more because of the story's structure.

It's very disturbing to me that people who liked this game are saying that all the negative reviews are coming from transphobic, homophobic people. Ellie and Dina's relationship was actually a highlight, but it didn't get enough time. Reading some of the reviews I've learned that Lev is actually transgender. I had no idea, I guess that's why she wasn't supposed to cut her hair, but I never made that connections. I really hope ND doesn't just dismiss all of the negative reviews as homophobic **** because I really think the story has some genuine issues. In the same vein, this game is not a 0/10 or 1/10. The acting, graphics and music alone raise that to at least a 4, and I think the gameplay being decent and the story having some highlights raises that to just an average game. Because this is a story driven experience, the story has more weight in terms of how I would rate it. In the context of TLOU1, a 5/10 is a failure, but had this been a standalone game, it would've just been fine.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Anyway speaking of the story, the big yikes plot, i think we can all aggree that THIS part (probably the most important in a game that's story-driven) was the real failure in this game, no matter how hard you try to explain it, it always seems off and poorly written, i'm sorry Neil but you're far from being as bright as you think you are, anyway that was a big flop, which takes this game from a previously top tier to a barely average game saved only by graphics, gameplay, and great optimization (because exclusive). This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us 2 is rather disappointing, for me at least. I like the first 10 or so hours of the game but then just as the story seems to come to a head, it goes right back to the beginning to make you experience the story from the villain's point of view. Not only does this completely ruin the pacing of the game, but it presents another 10 order so hours of the game that are completely unbearable, since you're playing as the woman who killed joel, a beloved character from the first game. I dont know who at nauty dog thought that would be a good idea. The second game completely throws out what was good about the first game in favour of a bland revenge story that offers little to no character development at all. For these reasons the game is very disappointing. However I didnt I did enjoy some of this game, and I find the core gameplay loop to be fun, which is why I'm not rating it lower. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My Overall Review:

    The Good:

    - Graphics-wise, in my opinion, looks pretty stunning. But I feel this game would have been suited for a PS5 launch day release then we can see the full capabilities of the games engine.

    - Combat really similar to the first game and I enjoyed it, plus the new additional movements and whatnot.

    - The crafting and upgrade system felt really polish and good. Having the gun benches here and there to custom my weapons was also a nice thing to have.

    - The AI has been improved quite substantially and that was a plus side.

    - It felt more horror like compared to the first release. It had a mix of the Walking Dead and Outlast vibes here and there. For someone who isn't a big horror fan, I did not expect walking into this but at least it kept me on my toes.

    - I really enjoyed the easter eggs like Nathan Drake's ring from the bank in downtown Seattle and the throwback PS3s and PS Vitas.

    The Bad:

    - The way Joel's death was handled. It felt very intentional that the writers decide to kill him off just for the sake of it and hence using that as the entire basis of the game.

    - We were promised that this game was mainly about Ellie but in comparison, I felt that I've been playing Abby for almost 60% of the time and I did not like it one bit.

    - I did not enjoy playing back Abby's backstory because it felt useless, removing this would no doubt make the game shorter but this time, it's quality over quantity.

    - The overall storyline and character development did not feel fluid at all. The game was literally jumping here and there and at certain parts, especially after playing Abby for over 5 hours. I felt like putting my controller down and switching my PS4 off.

    - The ending was also disappointing. From the beginning after Joel's death, Ellie swore in killing every last one of them. But at the very end, I have a feeling that Joel may not have wanted that to happen but Abby's death was well deserved considering the amount of pain and suffering Ellie has gone through... she lost her parents, her surrogate father, one of her closest friends (Jesse) and has put everything on the line just to seek revenge and avenge Joel. But, Ellie decides to let her go... that was a really disappointing part to see.

    What could be done better:

    - If Naughty Dog wanted to have Abby's backstory. Maybe, they should have decided in doing like what they did with Uncharted The Lost Legacy. Keep it as a standalone game and that 10 to 13 hours of gameplay should suffice.

    - The overall plot could have been done so much better. Ending Joel within the first 2 hours of the game was really heartbreaking considering everyone loved the character he turned out to be. Possibly making some sort of death scene at the end of the game, maybe when he dies of old age after going on his last adventure with Ellie would have been a much better approach in my opinion.

    - Also ending it could have been written so much better and I CANNOT emphasize that the ending was nowhere as top tier as the first game. The writers and director honestly could have decided to let Ellie kill Abby considering her dreadful past. I mean that was why Ellie decided to leave her family and go to California anyways...

    Conclusion:

Overall, this game could have taken a much more different route than anyone, even myself would have ever expected. There were too many plot holes which did not make any sense at all. The characters despite a vast majority being fan favorites, except for Abby and the rogue WLF's could have been developed and given far more emotions and a stronger personality. Killing Joel should not have happened and he should not have died in that sense considering how much he and Ellie have touched our hearts from the first game. Yes, I know normally living up to the standards that were already set from the first game will be really tough. But everyone has been waiting for 7 years to see where the gang would be and this was just a major flop and let down to the entire community and the players.

I play the first The Last of Us a couple of years after it came out. After hearing how good it was I purchased the remastered version for the PS4 play it and absolutely fell in love with Joel and Ellie. I felt heartbroken when I saw sam turn, for then Henry to take his life after killing his younger brother. I put myself in his shoes. I probably wouldn't have been able to pull the trigger. That moment stuck with me for a very long time. Just like the death of Sarah, the ranch scene, the time Ellie saves joel and Joel's learns to trust her. Those are the reason I loved The Last of Us. Because of the emotional character build up that the game allowed me to experience. Then came the announcement of this game. I was so excited about this game I wanted it the day I heard about it. Then I heard about the leaks. Given I went out of my way to play this game spoiler free, by staying away from comment sections, staying away from Twitter, Instagram, any youtube content that contained spoilers. I wanted to experience this game with no input from other people, and I succeeded. I managed to stay away from all spoilers, and experience it for myself. Played through it saw how Joel has his guard down and falls into a trap by literally putting him self in the middle of the room with compleatly unknown strangers. This is the man who ran over another because he felt like there was an ambush planed, and he lets that happen to him? Come on Naughty Dog you know better. You made the first game why is the original have such good writing and for the send off of a beloved character, you did this so lazily. Then you expect me to care about the person who killed him? No that's not how this works. Then Ellie goes off on a murderous rampage killing everyone in her way just to let her live? Ellie has lost everything and she gets to have a happy ending? I thought you loved these characters. I'm so disappointed with the story hat I don't know if I ever want to support any future endeavors. And yes I know I'm just one person but, i was a dedicated fan of this game and yeah I'm not owed anything, I have no entitlement to anything. And neither do you. I hope it was worth it to you guys to ruin such great characters for who knows what. Expand

Story: I won´t say anything specific. The story is full of plot holes don´t expect much and I really didn't get attached to any of the new characters.

Verdict: The game is not as bad as people make it look like, obviously the story sucks, but try to look into the good sides of the game like I did and give it a proper score. For me The Last Of Us Part 2 is a solid 7/10.

What an incredible way to fill an unsuspecting player with hopelessness and self-disgust. I played through the whole thing and came away just hating myself. After so many years of waiting, is this how they wanted players to feel? I wonder at their intentions.

    Good things:

It took the gameplay of the first game and enhance it 100%. The two main characters have different gameplay, upgrades and stuff, which contributes to deliver a better game.

The best of the industry in what animations respect. The faces animation are amazing, looks really close to real world.

Graphically is awesome, uses all the potential of the PS4 and the environments are beautiful.

The AI is really good, it has little to none problems. The human NPC's haves strategies to attack you. The variety of enemies is appreciable and is much more superior than the first game.

Dina's character is memorable, fits perfect with Ellie. One of ND's successes.

    Bad things:

All the new characters except Dina feels kind of empty. The character development is the antithesis of the first game, they're all easy to forget and you will not care about them.

The timeline is a mess. It is not a lineal story, you are constantly having flashbacks inside other flashbacks which takes away all the emotion.

The worst thing is that the game is constantly trying to confront the player, to confuse him and to make him feel guilty about the actions done or the actions you are going to do.

It has a lot of ultra violent scenes that are worthy of a madman.

The cordycepts infection is anecdotic. It has none effect in the story which is a wasted potential. Remembers me to Negan saga in TWD.

All Abby's story is a big mistake. The game shouldn't force you to play and care about her. However, after some hours I was able to understand her point, but Abby has nothing to do with what you loved from the first game and in the way she is presented to the player there is no chance to love the character. Only with two or three cinematics is enough to understand her point and if ND wanted to dive into her story, that should be a DLC not part of the main story.

    Conclusions:

The game is amazing in all aspects except the narrative, which is the most important thing in a game like this. It was seven large years waiting for this release, watching all new trailers and with very high expectations. I'm not disappointed at all but definitely the story was far away from what the fans expected. We don't ask for happy endings we just want you to be respectful with the essence of the first game and with the fans that payed and waited so long for this. They kept Abby hidden before game release because they knew no one would like her. Their forced inclusion sounds like some director's whim. This is not a game for everyone, anyway it is a must play if you own a PS4 and you liked Part I.

Music/Audio: As close to perfect as possible, will fully immerse you in a post-apocalyptic Seattle and depress you in the sad and down-trodden atmosphere the game places you in.

Game-play: If you liked the first game then you will enjoy this, not much has changed in terms of combat and scavenging. Combat is a bit spammy, animations are the main improvement with environmental animations tied into basic combat. Less puzzles and even fewer thoughtful puzzles are a shame.

Story: This is the massive negative for this game. With a game so story focused, this is why I've brought the score so low even with my glowing appraisal of the other aspects of the game. The story is filled with plot-holes, manipulation of the player and cheap ploys to get you to "feel" for a new protagonist.
There are so many easy tricks the writers use to try to play with your emotions and then act is if it was some profound twist. When in reality the story is just a massive misery/gore simulator that tries to look down its nose at you with a shallow "revenge isn't the answer" plot for some characters while
neatly ignoring that moral for other characters. The best way to describe this insult of a story is the writers trying to gaslight you into thinking this is some big statement on morals and virtue when its just them taking you on a Stockholm Syndrome roller-coaster.

Verdict: If you want to play this game as a tech-demo and simply enjoy the gameplay/visuals then by all means have at it. But if you have any hope for a decent story that builds on the first game then you will be very very sad and disappointed. Vote with your wallet if you don't like this sort of thing and
    wait for a heavy sale.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II... a long awaited sequel for the fans!
This game is by far one of my favourites under graphics! Level of detail is amazing, animation to movements, details on terrain, clothes, weapons, you name it! It looks gorgeous! Everywhere you look is a piece of art so bonus points for that! Level design is also awesome!
For the story? Not so great. The writing is bad.
The fans have been wondering and theorizing on what's going to happen for our main characters for Joel and Ellie and other lovable characters during the first one. After long years of waiting... we get a revenge story that is not fulfilled.
The only best moments in the game by far is the flashbacks with young Ellie and Joel. Awesome moments and makes your heart warm.
To be honest, I really wish Joel should've got more play time... he died fairly quick during the beginning of the game.
The ending... oh that ending... what was the point of the whole game when it ends just like that... you don't get to kill Abby, you let her live, and go back home with two missing fingers with an abandoned farmhouse, played the guitar, had a flashback to Joel, leave and roll the credits. What was the point of all that? Abby KILLED Joel ffs! A lovable and badass character killed just like that. Ellie's drive on killing Abby is off the roof then her drive just switched off out of no where in the end... It almost as if this sequel was pointless.

Would I recommend this game as a Last of Us fan? Nope.

Would you buy this full price? Nah... buy it when it goes on a big sale or wait until PS+ makes it a free game in the future.

Is this game gonna be Game of the Year? Absolutely not!

For hardcore Naughty Dog fans, I am truly sorry about this game. I can feel the huge disrespect in your face. A long awaited game is here and ends in a really horrible way.

As much as the story isn't the greatest in my opinion, the graphics, scenery and combat is amazing. I'll be giving this game a rating of 7/10 because of the three things I think that are great about the game and not the story. I seriously can't rap my head round the fact that Joel died a brutal death and how quickly he died. He deserved a way better death and later in the game. Let's also not forget about the ending. Ellie tracks down Abby to go KILL HER and decides to let her live? Like wtf. The whole point of the game was Ellie seeking revenge for the death of Joel and she chooses to let her live? Swear to me there are no spoilers... I swear.

Following up to one of the most acclaimed PlayStation games was never going to be an easy feat. Many of us agreed that the first game did not warrant a sequel and Naughty Dog told us that there would only be a sequel if there was a story to be told. With a reputation such as theirs, I trusted they would do the right thing. 7 years later, the story is here and it has been one of the most divisive and polarizing games released this generation.

The first Last of us was my favorite narrative based game largely because of the well crafted characters and interactions between them juxtaposed against the backdrop of a dismal world. However, if you go into the second installment with the same expectations or use it as any form of guideline, you are in for one hell of a shock! Part II was made to differentiate itself from its predecessor and subvert your expectations. It takes the franchise into a very different direction to what you may have anticipated... and would have wanted.

    So... what's GOOD?
This game is not a masterpiece, but it isn't terrible. Unfortunately, this games strengths lie in the technical department rather than the story itself. The gameplay, animations, systems , AI and attention to detail is hardly rivalled by other games and adds character and previously unexplored tones to each location. The dev's who worked their asses off deserve a lot of credit for what they managed to pull off here. The improved combat system is extremely satisfying, especially when you land heavy blows or feel the impact of enemy strikes that knock you to the ground. The ability to craft a range of useful and well balanced weapons gives you options on how to best take on enemies. The new groups you encounter are unnerving but also not surprising in a crazy apocalyptic world such as this one. The new ability to go prone saved my ass too many times and now you're able to disappear in the overgrown environment like Rambo. The sound design is also fantastic and Gustavo Santaolalla's soundtrack fits very well with the themes in the game with "Unbroken" being my personal favorite track. Apart from the technical side, there are some good story moments too where I actually found myself feel something or actually take a liking to a new character. However, these moments are brief and occur very early into the game or during flashbacks.

    THE BAD
The game is overwhelmingly but understandingly bleak and rarely mimics the charm of the first game, apart from one or two missions (you'll know if you've played it!). Although this game is twice as long as the first game, I felt little connection with the new characters and every single one of them felt underdeveloped. Not only do you not care about these characters, but you are also forced to spend a lot of time with the people you do not like, resulting in a lack of investment. The jumbled storytelling, character design, character decisions and sometimes dialogue throughout the game seems awkward and will often make you lose your s**t... which is a massive problem for a narrative based game. This inconsistency and lack of investment has a destructive effect on your ability to enjoy large gameplay sections and will undoubtedly become tedious, disjointed and grueling. On many occasions I laughed or rolled my eyes at the events that were unfolding on the screen because they were so unbelievable, flawed, tropey, convenient or simply just pointless.

    THE UGLY
The game does not hold back on its violence and actually gives you little option to avoid it. If you don't like to see people dismembered into red mist using crudely crafted weapons or you are a massive dog lover this game might not be for you. The game will also plunge you into dark and spooky areas with your flashlight as the only source. There is one hair raising mission that would not feel misplaced in a resident evil game (if you know, you know).

    THE VERDICT
When all is considered, this game is undoubtedly a technical marvel but falls flat in large segments of the story due to its fixation on teaching you basic morals. In turn, the game sacrifices character development, pacing and everything you enjoyed about the first game. If the focus switched to what this franchise means to the majority of us, then it would have been better received by its audience.

Beautiful graphics, good music, no real change in controls or game play but that's not necessarily a bad thing but I was hoping for something more. I enjoy a good revenge story but this ain't it chief. Story was drawn out way too long and relied on flashbacks for feel good moments to cover up Joel's crappy death and the fact they made Joel and Tommy looked like idiots to kick start the revenge plot. Other than those flashbacks, the game is practically devoid of any lighthearted moments like that were in the first game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am I huge fan of the first Last of Us and thought it told a simple but effective, emotionally powerful, well-acted story. I was hugely disappointed with this game's narrative. It could have been so excellent with so many amazing characters and themes, but instead we got a bland, horribly paced revenge story with unlikable characters and terrible, unsatisfying twists and turns. I feel there were moments of captivating intrigue and brilliance like the farmhouse sequence with Ellie after the first fight with Abby, the really engaging opening in Jackson (I thought Joel's death was an great way to kick of the story and made you relate to Ellie and the hatred she felt towards Abby) and the lore surrounding the Scars, FEDRA and the WLF. However almost everything else story wise was atrocious and unsatisfying. The ending honestly left me disheartened and depressed. I cannot believe how Ellie went from one of my favourite characters in gaming to a whiney, aggressive, humourless, bland brat. And don't even get my started on Abby! I cannot believe we were meant to sympathise with this utter jerk. I don't mind unlikeable, nasty characters at all. But to play as a character I don't even like for half the game just felt tiring and unnecessary. Her story just had so many pointless subplots.

One thing I completely adored was the gameplay. The actual gunplay and controls, are fine at best, but the cat and mouse style skirmishes are just so engrossing to play through. The options presented to the player are all interesting and viable and I loved seamlessly and tactically switching between slowly sneaking behind enemies and picking them off with my bow and knife, and once spotted unleashing my bullets and traps to reign hell upon my foes before running away and going hiding again. Ellie and Abby are so agile and fun to play as with a wide array of upgrades to choose from and weapons and gadgets to use and craft.

The level design is probably some of the best I've seen with the levels being open and vertical with plenty of places to explore and many different routes to take. In fact, I'm going through my second playthrough of the game right now just because of how fun I found the gameplay and exploration.

The music is okay. I love Gustavo Santaolalla and his music but in this game the soundtrack felt really generic and bland compared to most of his work.

Technically this game is a masterpiece. Visually it is stunning. The low hanging fog, the pouring rain, the ruined, crumbling dilapidated buildings are so amazing to look at and explore. At times the game looked photo realistic. I loved the atmosphere. The sound design is really meaty and satisfying as well. I never game across any glitches. Seems like a really polished game.

The real highlight of the game I think is the performances. Particularly Ashley Johnson as Ellie who really brings a pretty lifeless character in this game, to life.

I thought there was a lack of interesting cut-scenes. I often would rewatch my favourite scenes from the first game over and over again just because I though they were so powerful and awesome but in Part 2 not one scene jumped out at me as particularly memorable, or at least not in a good way. This leaves really long stretches of gameplay which I don't really mind because the gameplay really worked for me but it could be really repetitive for some people.

Overall, I though from a technical and gameplay standpoint this game is a complete masterpiece. But there are so many poor story decisions that were made that left me unsatisfying and feeling like this game was wasted potential that disappointed and disrespected everyone who waited 7 years for this narrative catastrophe. At the end of the day I did enjoy playing The Last of Us Part 2. Its highs are high and its lows are low.

The graphics, the score and the gameplay are some of the best that I've ever seen/heard. The only catch is the plot. Joel's death is far-fetched, as well as the ending, and playing as Abby for half of the game was extremely boring, not because of her sections itself, but just for the character, for which I have a profound contempt for and won't ever feel for her.

The only thing this game does right is making the player empathize with Ellie because we are pissed with her— but even from Abby’s perspective, it isn’t justified enough. I love writing imperfect, flawed characters, but this story, it was too prescriptive in terms of theme and the emotions it was trying to covey and that is where it falls short. Yeah I love the cruel world of TLOU universe but there are tedious ways to approach those themes and then there are ways not to; this game was just negligent and crude. Expand

The game as part 2 does'nt work. They deconstructed the main character, to give space for an not original unrevenge script. We would only like a cohesive story with the two parts, but Naughty dog's crew just only followed the flow of Game of Thrones in **** in the history like they wanted. Gameplay, sounds and graphics is amazing. 5/10 is a great note to a history write with lazy in a hurry.

The Last of Us Part 2 is actually a good game, but a terrible sequel. We have now an open world, amazing an addictive combat and an okay soundtrack by Gustavo Santaolalla that is saved by Mr Robot's composer Mac Quayle.

Everything great until that. Except for the story. Neil Druckmann is so obsessed with creating an story about revenge that in the path he forgets that he is treating with two of the most beloved characters of this decade. He decides to introduce a new character to the franchise and forces player to understand her and he even adds scenes that look to proof her 'humanity'.

By the way, if Druckmann wants to player to feel something for the character that killed Joel, he is in a bad way showing us an intense and kinda awkward sex scene. But Abby is forced character that even in the end doesn't pay for her actions.

But flashbacks (Ellie and Joel, of course) are the best and at the same time GREAT part of the game, and that's what The Last of Us was always about, a beautiful love story between two lost people in a destroyed world, people who lost every reason to live but they're forced to keep walking in the world, but they're not alone anymore once they find each other. That's The Last of Us and Neil Druckmann seems to understand that when he wrote flashbacks along with Halley Gross. But when we go to present story seems to go worse after some great flashbacks.

Shannon Woodward as Dina is great, I don't know if maybe it's because of her voice or because the way character is written, to be a kind, sweet and at the same time strong character. She is great.

If Neil Druckmann wouildn't decided to go with a hate, revenge and consequences story we might have another great game, however it's not the case. And we get to a terrible conclusion, where the whole journey of Ellie becomes pointless, stupid, awful. Wish I could talk a little bit more about this, but in the end if we remove the moment where she decides to let Abby go we might have a good ending where the character finally finished her journey. But of course, that's not happening.

Sadly we can't say it's a great game when story is just terrible, but if you're not a fan of The Last of Us you'll have a great game that will offer you a long and great experience. But if that's not the case you will just hate it.

Let's just ignore this game exists anyway.

It is a beautiful game with amazing graphics and landscapes, some awesome features and great moments throughout the story (Ellie "take on me" for example). However I can't help but think that the story could be better, I don't think this is a bad game, but I cannot agree with those who say it is as good as the first or that this is a 10/10 masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLDR This game is a mixed bag. The game has clearly made some serious gameplay improvements. The visuals are stunning and run smooth on my PS4 Slim. The biggest disappointment is the story. If you intend to play this game with the hopes of getting a story with the caliber and emotional moments as the first game you will be disappointed. The game is far too long and is full of itself and the gameplay can't make up for that.

First off I would like to start with the good. As many others have said the game is visually stunning. The game runs smooth on my PS4 Slim and have yet to experience any frame drops. Voice acting is good as is expected the script may not be great but it is acted well. The gameplay is not a massive improvement over the first game but is a much more polished version of that combat system. With the addition of more useful skills to learn and upgrades the gameplay overall feels better. Enemy AI is a mixed bag. Sometimes they flank you and can give you tough time. Other times they are as dumb as can be. The first introduction to Seattle has a sort of open world feel. Where you have a few locations to explore with the goal of finding gasoline. It is a nice concept that the game oddly chooses to never make use of again. Some of the new characters are genuinely likeable although that is certainly a subjective opinion and your opinion may vary.

The worst part about this game is the story and writing. Many will be upset by the early death of Joel as it feels unearned and is intentionally brutal. It is sad to say but this situation seems to occur so early for the sake of the shock factor of it. I generally do not have a problem with this so long as the game justifies itself and the brutality it put us and Ellie through. The game sadly fails to do so and turns into a generic poorly executed story on the violent cycle of revenge.

In the first Last of Us there is a constant theme of hope in an otherwise bleak world. Ellie is the heart of that game and her interactions with Joel are what I believe makes it resonate with its audience. Gone is this theme of hope for a better future. Ellie is understanbly overcome with rage over the death of Joel and consumed by it. But in her trek for revenge she nearly loses herself. By the end of the game Ellie is broken and has given up nearly everything that made her happy for vengeance. A vengeance she ultimately cannot see through. Ellie and the player are psychologically tortured in this game and in a way it seems to me that Naughty Dog intended to paint her as a villain of the story and perhaps the villain of the story. This falls flat due to the motivations and actions of the new character Abby. Abby kills Joel in cold blood and in return has Ellie, Tommy, Jesse and Dina hunting herself and her friends. Although ultimately Ellie does most of the killing. It is with Abby that the utterly fails. The game takes a twist toward the later stages where you are forced into the shoes of Abby. We see that her father was the Firefly doctor who was going to make a cure using Ellie at the end of the first game. Although this justification feels cheap. Marlene is shown to be conflicted about killing Ellie to make the cure and Abby's father is not. Leading up to one of the dumbest lines in this entire game. As her father is contemplating killing Ellie to create the cure Abby says to him "If it was me I'd want you to do the surgery." This presents a problem as now it seems pretty clear that the firefly's didn't care whether or not Ellie wanted to be martyred for their hope a cure. This cast further doubts onto the already dubious act that Abby commits. If the game did not attempt to make us and in turn Ellie feel bad about these actions it would be irrelevant to a degree. But the game seems to actively take the stance that Joel was definitely wrong and fails to give us any reason to agree with that point. Ellie is emotionally destroyed by the acts of evil she commits. Abby revels in the pain she inflicts and seems to enjoy it. It is because of this lack of empathy from Abby that I could not as hard as I tried enjoy playing as her. I thought somewhere along my travels as Abby I would begin to sympathize with her. But as time progress you realize how shallow and despicable a character she truly is. Abby never takes responsibility for the river of blade she leaves in the wake of her selfish revenge quest. The game at this point would sit a 7/10 for me. But the final act in Santa Barbara is a great example of a game overstaying its welcome. Ellie gives up an idyllic life for one last shot of revenge. The product of this being that Ellie's relationship with Dina may never be the same and she can no longer play guitar. A hobby that is one of the last things Ellie had shared with Joel. This game is remarkably cruel to characters we have come to love. If you loved the first games characters and story do not play this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Concerning sequels, I find it is difficult to completely weigh them objectively. The game cannot exist unto itself, and because of that, it is already at a disadvantage. There is a lot to love and loathe about The Last of Us Part II.

The graphics of this game have been praised enough, and though they are fantastic, graphics alone will not carry the title. Thankfully, they do not have to. They work in tandem with aspects which I enjoyed from The Last of Us to make a game which is a worthy sequel. The controls and style of it echo that of its predecessor, and it carries on the tradition of attempting to ground the experience in some semblance of reality. The world is harsh and makes no promise of life to anyone. While this effort is appreciated, it can seem jarring at times. In private conversation, I have jested that the game is a "depression simulator," and while the joke may fall flat for some, it is no less poignant of a synopsis in my humble opinion. This is, by no means, a shortcoming. In fact, the most effective of stories, I find, are the ones that force me to deal with a range of emotions, which this game does effectively at times, and ineffectively at others.

Much of the positive emotions I have come to associate with the game, are derived from heartfelt moments between Ellie and Joel, of course. Their interactions are heartwarming, and the emotional beats of their story feel as personal as the two of them. There are elements of environmental storytelling which persist, and the game does not shy away from showing the depravity that takes hold in a post-apocalypse. Though there are moments which pull one away from the despair, they are tucked away behind flashbacks. The knowledge that this comfortable lull is a fleeting moment nags at the back of the player's mind. It will end, forcing them back to the discomfort of the main narrative.

While these flashbacks are some of my favorite moments in the game, I fear they are also misused at times. Some events seem out of place, as though they would have been more beneficial if utilized earlier on. The attempt at getting the player personally invested in the other playable character, Abby, and her compatriots, seems to fall quite short. The player grew to appreciate and empathize with both Joel and Ellie over the course of an entire game. The same cannot be achieved for an entire group, let alone one character, in a far shorter amount of time. In fact, I would argue that Abby should have been the initial playable character following the prologue. Starting with her recurring nightmare and inciting action for her quest for revenge, and subsequently viewing the end of the original game from a new perspective. It would have also allowed for the player to observe the same all-consuming force of vengeance taking its toll upon Abby, much like it would Ellie. The difference being, that Abby's vendetta stops with Joel. It is not allowed to bleed over to those immediately around him. There is the great potential for an incredible story here, but I fear that it may have become too enamored with the idea of saying something profound.

Whatever it attempts to say is irrelevant. At its core, this series has been one focused on its characters. It should not be a fable. It should not attempt to lecture the player about morality. Morality means nothing in this world. You have already been made party to dooming any hope for a cure. No, this game is not about what is right and wrong. It is about human relationships, and the depths to which people will delve to endure and survive.

No chance of it being due to the game having flaws in a lot of people's eyes, or what do we call it, their opinion? Both sides are being really pathetic over this, this game has drastic changes compared to the first one, they take away the things people love from the series, people won't react nicely, but to blame it all on minor aspects of the game like a character being trans or the other being really muscular? If you really liked the game you would listen what others think about this game, be it good or bad and allowing discussion, but how people are acting is really infuriating, i really liked a lot of parts of this game, mostly Abby parts, but how the game at it's core is all mixed up, i cant bring myself to give this game a rating higher than 5, and how people are acting like this is **** whilst ignoring the technical aspects, gameplay and all other things due to the critics reviews is unfair makes me not want to give this game a score under 5. And as counter measures people are counter review bombing this with 10's making the other side continue bombing this with 0's, the thing i recommend the most for you to do is, play the game, form your opinion, dont baseless say this game is a masterpiece because other people are saying its trash, dont say its trash since other people say its a unflawed. Form your opinion. And i hope people stop ignoring this game's flaws and this game's right doings.
This game's reviews is a prime example why people shouldn't trust reviews and should trust their own gut. And if someone were to ask me: "Should i buy this game?" i'd tell them no, but there's always a chance you could like it.

Gameplay was just like the first one and in some aspects even better. New weapons new features. It all felt nice as well as some new tools and upgrades made the game feel something working towards. But the story of the first half is very controversial because of Joel’s death. I think Joel dying so early I. The game was t a bad choice for story design but it’s the way it was executed. Joel and Tommy are survival experts and know when they are walking into an ambush. Tommy even tells them to go to Jackson for supplies and head back where they came from. That isn’t the true Miller brothers we know from the first one. Joel’s death would’ve worked if we saw it through abbys POV from the begging in of the game. If you really think about it what would the plot be about If Joel didn’t die? Killing Joel was too soon which I disagree but it was done correctly in order to show and explain Abbys side of the story. Moving through Seattle days 1-3 was an amazing experience. Hunting down the wolves and going up against the Scars was a cool experience. I also liked the way the game dynamically changed like falling through a floor and getting setback. In terms of characters Dina is a great character but we don’t really learn too much about her. A lot of people found her controversial cause she’s apparently a feminist? Jesse is a great character I like his personality it fits well with the game. Too sad he died. Overall the first half was phenomenal. Killing everyone who was in the room that night felt great that Ellie is getting her revenge person by person. The second half of the game got interesting. We catch up with Abby right before she rushes into the theater and what she was doing 3 days prior to that. The game explains why she did what she did. It all makes sense but the game throws you in loopholes that you can’t get out of till hours later. Up until we switched to Abby I couldn’t understand why she would kill Joel out of nowhere. The gameplay was more so the same with Abby although there were some cool experiences like hospital basement with that huge monster and going on the Scar Island. I didn’t like how we played Abby for a period of time. It felt too long for me. The ending was okay. It wasn’t good. The whole part with the rattlers at the end of the game could’ve been avoided. Instead of Abby getting captured again it would’ve been better if Ellie caught up to her and killed her. Going through the rattlers felt so unnecessary that it started to drift away from the story. Now the beach scene was probably one of the worst scenes in the game. I understand that Abby got her revenge but Ellie never gets to. She lost Joel, Jesse, Tommy and Dina while Abby has lost al her friends but gets to live with Lev. Ellie lost everything to go after Abby and she doesn’t die. The ending could’ve been executed a lot better but it sucks that waiting 7 years for a game led to this. Ultimately this game was very good. The writing was mostly great. The whole gameplay experience with the graphics was absolutely phenomenal. TL:DR - TLOU2 Had a phenomenal experience and graphics but the writing in some crucial parts of the story hurt it more than helped. It’s an amazing experience to play through and I would recommend it to anybody who played the first one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to preface this review with I didn't read any spoilers before playing and completed the whole game.

The Last of Us Part 2 has some of the best graphics, world, atmosphere, level design, and gameplay I've ever played. But as a narrative-driven game, the second half of the game takes some turns that resulted in me not wanting to finish the game. I was only able to complete this game because of the amazing gameplay/level-design and wanting to see how badly they could mess up an otherwise compelling story. By the end of the game I understood the story Naugty Dog was trying to tell. I think there is a good story in there, but the characters and the tropes they pushed in second half of the game missed the mark for me. I feel they are pandering too much to certain demographic and didn't make any attempt to make the second half of the game relatable to the general audience. So let me explain my issues with the narrative:

    *SPOLIERS*
In the first half of the game you play as Ellie trying to get revenge on a character named Abby for killing Joel. Being a big fan of other zombie games/movies, while killing Joel was a huge shock, it didn't turn me off to the game. It was inline for this kind of universe for me. I enjoyed playing as Ellie and I liked all of the new characters they introduced. Watching Ellie slowly become more and more lost to hatred as she kills off Abby friends while hunting for her was believable and compelling to me. You eventually get to the climax where you are confronted with Abby herself. There's so much tension and anticipation built up and then the game just screws you over. When you think you're going to get that sweet revenge it switches over to flashback of Abby with her dad, and then proceeds to make you play the same timeline as Ellie but from Abby's perspective. This is where the game lost me. I don't like Abby's character, and over the course of 10 hours playing as her, that didn't change. I rushed through Abby's part of the game because I didn't care about her and just wanted to see the end of Ellie's storyline. The game is trying to make you empathize and like Abby, but her character is just boring and uninteresting to me. I understand why she killed Joel, I understand she lost her love interest to her quest for revenge, I understand the pain from all of her friends being murdered by Ellie, I understand her trying to slowly redeem herself by helping Lev, I understand she grew and let go of her hatred for Ellie. Despite this, I never found her story interesting and hated playing her the whole time. I would often suicide to vent frustration. I feel really conflicted about this as well because a lot of my favorite gameplay sequences were during Abby's playthrough. Escaping from the scars after being hanged, descending a broken skyscraper filled with zombies, the boss fight in the hospital basement, and the sniper part. These were all some of the coolest things I've played in a game. I just wish I wasn't playing as Abby.

The ending also dragged on forever. I kept thinking the game would end and then there was repeatedly another level or cut screen tacked on. This resulted in my friend and I playing "take a drink every time you think the game is gonna end". I think they could've cut a lot of last few hours out or structured it better. Overall though I think this is a good game. I didn't like Abby's story but I still enjoyed the gameplay itself. If you don't mind Abby or don't care about the story I think you will really enjoy this game. And I think if you were intereseted in game at first, but turned off by the controversy, you should still give the game a chance.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game has many positives that get overshadowed by inconsistent writing. If story is not too important to you, then this game will probably be to your liking. Review contains some general spoilers.

First, I want to highlight that this game is graphically very well done, with good sound design and very good voiceovers across the entire cast. Gameplay feels like a natural evolution of the previous game, but is not revolutionary. Accessibility options will be a welcome addition for some, and I hope this level of inclusivity sets the new industry standard. By far the weakest point of this game is its sub-par story and pacing.

The game starts with a brief update of what Joel and Ellie are up to, but it soon changes to a much darker tone when Abbie tortures and murders Joel in plain sight of Ellie. We later learn that Abbie is the daughter of one of the Firefly doctors Joel murders at the end of TLOU.

The story follows a mirrored revenge story told from two perspectives, Ellie, and newcomer Abbie. There is a very deliberate focus on the futility of revenge and breaking the cycles of violence, a perspective that is bafflingly only applied to Ellie's side of the story, because it turns out that 50% of the game is played from Abbie's perspective; with a story line that ultimately feels almost entirely disconnected from what Ellie is up to.

The story is interspersed with many flashbacks that add (some) depth to Abbie's character, and that appeal to the nostalgia factor of the Joel-Ellie relationship. These flashbacks are strategically placed to rob the story of any momentum, whenever something exciting happens, there's a flashback that yanks all the pacing out of whack.

Despite the criticism, Abbie is a serviceable character that is introduced in the worst possible manner. She is a hardened killer with selective morality, proving to be very caring with Lev, a boy she meets and develops a relationship with in a mere 3 days while Ellie is coincidentally rampaging through Seattle. Despite the overall story being focused on the futility of violence, this perspective is very much lost on Abbie's side of the story. She is shown to be traumatized ONLY by the violence inflicted on her, but really seems to not give two **** about murdering anyone that stands in her way. In many ways, this character is similar to pre-redemtion Joel, and it even follows a similar arc by taking Lev under her wing, but this arc is far too rushed to really land.

Several "contextual" clues are given to make the player care about Abbie, she has the best combat, guns, expansive storyline, no one is forcing you to feel bad for your actions as her, she plays fetch with dogs, NEVER encounters a dog enemy, has a "cute" character flaw in her fear of heights. Meanwile, Ellies entire storyline is miserable, she is deeply affected by her actions towards revenge. This really rubbed me the wrong way, not because either point of view is bad for storytelling or gameplay reasons, but just because they do not match, all arguments about the inmorality of Ellie's actions apply to Abbie, but the game facetiously does not make those arguments during Abbie's playthrough. By the end of the game, Ellie is left a miserable, traumatized husk of her former self, while Abbie is essentially unscathed and at peace. The message just doesnt compute.

The story itself is also riddled with bafflingly out-of-character choices by all major players (Joel, Ellie and Abbie), with many contrived "saved in the nick of time" plot moments, where main characters are saved by extensive use of plot armor. Side characters, however, die like flies with little story impact, many of the side character deaths are barely met with a gasp, and their names are literally never mentioned again. There were many points, especially on Ellie's story, where the story could have ended on a more poignant note (notably post Seattle discussion with Dina).

There is no big payoff in story-telling through the entire playthrough, the basic scenario is still various factions of humans fighting for resources, where weirdly the zombies seem to really only appear as a minor inconvenience, this also deadens the emotional conflict of both Abbie and Ellie with Ellie not dying to make the cure, since it seems it really makes no difference.

Side characters Dina, Lev and Yara are fine, but they are undeveloped as a whole. Lev and Yara's side story is particularily pointless, since about 8 hours of the game are devoted to them without really developing characters or changing the world state.

Overall the game is significantly longer than its predecessor, but squanders its running time with little left to say. I think the ending scene is meant to leave the player to reflect about the futility of violence and the importance of making your peace with your loved ones. Personally, it left me reflecting on the futility of expecting something profound from this franchise.

Gameplay feels great. Puzzles are not bad. But TLOU is a story driven game, leading characters Ellie and Abby constantly making decisions and behaving illogically are what drive me crazy. If not the outstanding gameplay and graphic, this game deserves below average.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Technically the game is pretty decent but I personally was disappointed caz of main story. It repeats 1 part like killing crucial character. No doubt Joel deserved be dead considering what he's done to people before but the fact that he and Tommy told unknown people their names so easily makes me sad. The whole story of Abby is garbage as for me. The only thing you want all the game is to kill her but the game tries to change your ming unsuccessfully. She kills her ex-mates for Lev so easily and without a doubt like a butcher. There is a long break between 2 story lines of Ellie and Abby so can loose the story line. They should have mixed chapters or show Abby's story before Joel's death so we can understand her feelings and actions. However we just want to kill Abby as fast as we can. That's why people confused about the epilog when Ellie decides to let Abby go. We just can't take it. Well in my mind it should be 2 dialogue phrases to choose for Ellie talking with Joel in the night. The first means she won't forgive him and all of the well-known thing happen and the second phrase ( unlocks after passing unlucky ending perhaps) whe she forgives him and they go together nex morning in patrol (happy ending). This would be the logical continuation of the last of us part 1. I'm very sad about what I've seen. Like separate game it's OK but considering 1 part it's total garbage in terms of the story and how it failed... Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
