What a turd. They got Wrex's name wrong, as well as Garrus's sex of all things. And you can shag the Illusive Man's daughter? Is that supposed to be a joke? Why can't you shag your sibling instead... on second thoughts it's probably best that you can't because they didn't implement putting a bag over their heads to hide their stupid ass faces.

This is one of the most boring and disappointing games I've played and I loved the Mass Effect franchise.

You really have to force yourself to keep interested in this game,

It also looks like Bioware went out of there way to make the female characters unattractive, not sure what they were trying to accomplish.

Just rent it before you buy it.

Ultimately, BioWare has failed completely. I dont know if this is because EA owns them and EA has failed to make a good game in awhile or why, but this game had so much potential and it failed. Just wait till all that not free DLC is released, which may make this game decent.

Is it perfect? no, no game is perfect in my opinion, cause if a game is perfect that means there is no room for improvement. Are there flaws? yes, but they are less apparent the further you get in the game. Do the human like characters(this includes asari) look derpy? yes, does it need work? yes. Are all games perfect on launch? no. From what I've seen in my life as a gamer no game is 100% perfect off the start, this isn't the days of old school where you had to get it right off the bat. With today gaming publishers can patch as they go, players just need to voice feedback. Will the flaws get fixed? pretty sure they've said a patch is on the way, or in the works. Anyways, everyone is entitled to their opinions, but atleast make informed reviews after actually playing the game. Most people seem to be trash talking the game for the sake of trash talking it, because it's the in thing to do. Now if you actually played the game and decided you didn't like it fine, personally i'm enjoying myself greatly. The campaign is fun and new, combat is sleek and fluid, and multiplayer is a blast. Is it gonna win game of the year? probably not, but i don't care. I'm just gonna enjoy exploring and killing aliens, and hopefully people will learn to give games a chance then let other people decide what they like and don't like. Expand

BUT to reassure anyone who is here for the story I am enjoying it immensely. It's classic science fiction which seems to be building into one heck of a space opera kind of tale.

The character creator is just as bad as the first series, so if you want to enjoy the adventures of ugly Shepard (or in this case ugly Ryder) go make a character with it otherwise use the default. It is well crafted and suits who the characters are. This has never been a strong point of the series and not exactly the driving force behind this type of game.

The game does have bugs, yes it sure does but those will vanish with a patch or two. That's all in my opinion that drags the score down for me. Though some of these are definitely engine bugs because I remember running into similar issues in DA:I.

In the end is this game worth it? Yes!
It's easy to be a toxic reviewer and there seem to be a lot of those on here. I'd disregard anyone who uses crude and negative language without actually explaining themselves. I'd also disregard anyone who reviewed the game one day one of release because I'm 50 hours in and only 30% done the story. :)

    Stay strong and clear!

    Biggest negatives are:
    1. huge lack of music in the game, and key signature moments (say becoming a Spectre in ME1, or getting the Normandy) -- the equivalents in ME4 are very brief casual affairs with no music. This is very disappointing for me, and even the memorable space exploration music is so subdued and ambient, you have to crank the sliders to even hear it.
    2. The space exploration, while pretty, transitions take too long, aren't skipable, and there is very little of interest. Very half-baked and incomplete. Sometimes you find minerals or a derelict ship/satellite. Scanning planets is briefer than the ME2 system, only because there is literally only 0 or 1 anomalies per planet (mostly 0). Feels empty.
    3. Character/Animation system. Looks like Bioware moved from the expensive motion captured method to procedural animations. The characters are a real step back, character generation is limited. We're talking worse than Skyrim here. Eyes looks largely flat and dead, and when the lead character smiles she looks like Jack Nicholson in the Shining.
    4. Crafting, research, scanning -- it seems to be a lot of work to do everything needed to research and craft items, and by the time you are able to do so, you end up looting superior items and not needing to craft at all. Still I'm still in the first quarter of the game. Feels like crafting is to fill gaps, but the pacing feels bad and difficult in the beginning, possibly due to the overwhelming amount of choice. So I'm saving it for when I need it.

Overall the game is fun and engaging, but there are several parts of the game that feel undercooked. While animations are genuinely pretty bad, I can overlook some of that. But I'd say if Bioware is listening, music and space exploration needs more work and balancing. Maybe more planets that you can rover on.

Technically and artistically, it's a gigantic feat.

For now, the storytelling doesn't have the gravitas or the intensity of ME2 or 3, and that's the only reason why I don't give it a full score. But the premises are different: Shepard was a leader and a veteran already at the beginning of the story, while Scott is a young (man or woman), and the whole tone of the story reflects this difference. Imagine a school trip that lasts for 600 years, and takes you to a new galaxy. This was the Andromeda Initiative, for the protagonist, at the setup.

Commenters may like the game or not, but to give it a score of 0 (zero???) or even 2 or 3 means, in my opinion, not to give value and credit where it's due and I suspect at least some of it is due to hate towards Bioware and its political choices.

Since Im playing this on PS4 it lags like hell specially those over rendered CGI background lighting, texture everything else is unpleasant the only thing enjoyable is the gameplay though its pretty much like a basic TPS shooter game with jumping jetpack joyride feel of the game. Though nothing is innovative when I say nothing is innovative nothing is new! and from my perspective that the game isn't developed by BIoware but by some interns who got their idea from potatoes because your Pathfinder looks like a potato specially Sarah Ryder. Alright! less ranting and more to technicalities of the game.

Graphics in this game is very bad indeed its really bad that makes my eyes experienced a low stance katana katana slash from William. Its poorly designed that you won't admire it. In Final Fantasy XV despite of its under developed game play and customization the graphics are really top notched.

Gameplay is the same nothing is innovative if they call jet pack is something innovative then you guys are wrong jet pack feature is already seen in various shooter games and oh dashing mid air looks cool? I bought a game with nothing new Metal Gear Solid V is even better than this.

Story is by far the worst in the Mass Effect Trilogy heck its even worst than Nioh. Dialogues are poorly written that it makes the character sounds like a Persona high school student even the narrative in the cutscenes, In comparison to a Yoko Taro story telling this is rubbish like how many team does Bioware/EA has to write a story?

I have been the biggest fan of Bioware since KOTOR (a late comer I know). Both KOTOR and Dragon Age Origins rank within my top 5 RPGs of all time. I have played every inch of the original Mass Effect trilogy and admired how much detail and heart Bioware gave to this new science fiction franchise.

For MEA, I ignored the early impressions by reviewers and media personalities. I ignored the obvious red flags in relation to the facial animations as well. Because I WANT THIS GAME TO BE GOOD. It was wishful thinking.

The biggest failure of this game is not the technical issues such as the pop up textures, the creepy faces or even the lack of customization for the characters. It is THE WRITING. Yes, a Bioware game which has horrendous, amateurish writing. All characters, including the aliens, are written as if they were high school teenagers on a vacation to some exotic island. If this is not titled Mass Effect, you might be led to think that this is somehow a fanfiction of The OC set in space.

And this style of amateurish writing is not a sign of incompetence neither. I firmly believe that this was a DELIBERATE CHOICE. Gone are the subtleties of intergalactic species relationship and conflict, replaced by efforts to make everyone (including the ALIENS) relatable to casual fans who do not care about the lore at all.

The most jarring of all is your encounter with the Angara (not a spoiler since it was shown in the trailers). Within 2 minutes of encountering the Angara, the Pathfinder can not only understand everything the aliens FROM ANOTHER GALAXY are saying but also understand their basic motivations. The fact that both the player and the Pathfinder can immediately recognize concepts within the Angaran society (even basic ideas such as helping, eating, trust, honesty) is a testament to the effort which Bioware and EA has undertaken to trivialize all "minute detail" of the story.

There are countless other examples. Peebee, the asarian companion, commenting that she only needs a toothbrush and a bed to come onboard the tempest as if she were a human being. Drack the Krogan having a completely human granddaughter and grandfather relationship with 0 comment on the fact that the survival rate of Krogan children is below 5% because of the genophage.

I cannot continue with this game anymore. I can excuse the technical and framerate issues. Hell, I would play this game with characters made out of polygons if the writing were excellent. But with EA and the new Bioware decision makers at the helm, all we can hope for going forward is a desperate cash grab with flashy objects, cheap romances with clunky AI characters and a plot catered for 12 year old.

So long Bioware. It's been a good run but don't ever ask me to buy a single game from you ever again.

    The game is solid.

I've played the previous three parts and dragon age inquisition with pleasure. And this is where the great problem of andromeda begins. From the game mechanics it is a simple copy of dragon age inquisition. While the previous mass effect parts had a very exciting main story and a constantly flowing gameplay in the missions, andromeda unfortunately misses these qualities completely. The current mass effect is, unfortunately, only a careless copy of dragon age inquisition with a science fiction skin. Most of the game time is spent walking an unnecessarily long distance, always looking for the same containers and constantly checking boring objects with the multifunction scanner. From time to time, the playful solitude is supplemented by a repetitive and tactically undemanding struggle. The Nomad is unfortunately of only very limited benefit, since its control is still buggy. Even the opponents in the game are boring, they seem more like a badly made copy of the collectors from part two. The main story is so thin, that it becomes quickly boring. The environment graphics of the game is very beautiful, this is one of the few highlights of the game. Unfortunately this is relativized by the badly made facial animations. The newly designed dialogue option system is basically a good improvement of the old system. Only this doesn’t really stand out in this boring main story and companions.
I can recommend this part of the mass effect series only for people who loved the gameplay of dragon age inquisition and can’t get enough of it to scan for 100 hours with an annoying multi-function scanner at the forearm for boring research bonuses in the environment. For all the others I recommend for the moment: fingers away.

I would first of all like to apologise for the 10, the game is more like a 7,5 but I at least had to try and negate a bit of the ridiculous low scores which are being given at te moment.
At moments the game tends to feel a bit 'last gen' but for me that's not a problem because I still love the 'last gen' consoles. The most important thing that I would like to see fixed is the frame rate.

The story is a bit obvious (so far) and has a slow start but so far I'm loving it.
Very nice game, having much fun, the hate is imo pretty much overreacting.

TV, music and entertainment will continue to grow in this direction because there is money to be had in appealing to people who are not white western values males and that's not wrong. Andromeda does not deserve the hate its getting, plain and simple. The main cast is all fantastic, and the supporting cast are just as essential, with different characters blooming at different times, sometimes through direct conversations, and sometimes through eavesdropping via the metallic reverberations of their voices off of the hull as you're passing by. The detail to attention in this game is unreal. Leather pinches and squeezes audibly, dust and dirt build up on your visor and suit when you stay planet side on a desert planet for an extended period of time, and dynamic dialogue that reacts to your actions in the middle of gameplay?! Get. Out. Of. HERE!

Yes, there are issues with the animation of the character models, but that is such an underwhelming negative in comparison to the vast amount of quality content. And the prerendered movies? Outrageously awesome.

Keep on BioWare Montreal. Coming from someone who loves to create, I can imagine the pain that comes from receiving such negative feedback after fostering a project with such love, but please don't give in. As someone who respects the series very much, I can tell you guys I'm going to buy the **** out of the next Mass Effect game you guys release.

That team is gone, and about 90% of them left Bioware years ago. This game does not have Casey Hudson's direction steering it, nor the narrative talents of Mac Walters and Drew Karpyshyn to prop it up- although Walters serves as the games director which ultimately, keeps it from being worse than what it could have been. This game was developed by the team that made ME3 multiplayer mode, which makes it their first AAA release, and for their first attempt, it is not a terrible one, but that fact that it IS their first is evident.

Let's just call this game what it is: Dragon Age: Inquisition with a Mass Effect coat of paint. The moment you land on Eos, you'll notice how similar the exploration mechanic is to DA:I. There's markers for landmarks, quests, fast travel spots; it basically uses the exact same system. This is not a bad thing if you enjoyed Inquisition(like I did), but shows a lack of experience or a fear of trying anything bold on the new development team's part. Still, it works for the most part. One of the better parts of exploring is the Nomad, which is a vast improvement over the Mako from ME1 and makes traversal much easier, even if it cannot be used offensively. Going off the beaten path is encouraged, but be warned of wildlife, enemies, and even the environment trying to kill you- Eos spends much of it's time being unsafe to travel on foot due to radiation for the first 5-10 hours.

The combat is this games highlight. ME3's multiplayer was a lot of fun to play, so it makes sense that the team knew how to translate fun, fast-paced combat to the main story. Your encouraged to keep moving, much like in games like Uncharted or Tomb Raider, as opposed to the more slower and cover-focused system from the previous Mass Effect games. The jet boost mechanic is a great addition and encourages new and fun ways to approach combat. You feel yourself getting pressured, boost into cover. Enemies hiding behind cover, boost up shoot them from the air as you hover. However, there is a downside to it: your squadmates. You cannot control them as much as you can in previous games. You can only direct them to a new position or order them to attack an enemy. They're serviceable enough to fight enemies but you can't coordinate attacks tactically, which means you're mostly on your own.

The new crafting system has been described as complicated and have terrible interface, and...all these things are true. If you're a casual gamer, the crafting system may take some getting used to. It's similar in nature to Dragon Age: Inquisition(which this game seems to have no problem borrowing heavily from), but it's layered under a somewhat tricky to navigate interface. That being said, crafting is the best way to get the best gear and if you have the patience, is worth the effort. The downside: the crafting(and gear in general) extends only to you. You cannot customize your squadmate's weapons and armor as in previous titles, they have their default gear and they're stuck with it for the game's duration.

Speaking of the squadmates: they're a mixed bag. A lot of them feel like stand-in for their much more popular and better written predecessors. Vetra is another visor-wearing Truian, Drack's the new Wrex/Grunt, Peebee's the new Liara(but behaves like Liara's more adventurous and somewhat annoying sister). Some of the new characters DO work. Cora and Liam are your new Kaidan and Ashely, only much more likeable. Jaal is sort of a mix between Thane and Javik from ME2 and ME3, but so far, I found him interesting enough to separate himself from them. Then you got the side characters who are almost entirely forgettable, like Kallo, the ship's pilot, who is a far cry from Joker.

The dialogue wheel that the developers talked up as being more situational and less binary than the Pargon/Renegade system is a disappointment to say the least. We were promised four choices, but I have rarely encountered them. The default seems to be too and they're limited to "casual/professional" or "emotional/logical". Basically, you can be Star-Lord or you can be Picard.

A lot of people have bashed the writing, and I feel it's undeserved. It is not as bad as they claim, but it never quite reaches the lofty standards set by ME2 or ME3. Still, you should have no trouble believing this is a Bioware game, even if it's story is pretty by-the-numbers.

Overall, Andromeda is not a bad game by any stretch. Hype and expectation are what is currently bringing it down. The technical problem were few and far between for me(I'm talking like two noticeable bugs over six hours that weren't game-breaking), the combat is a lot of fun, the exploration is serviceable, and the new characters are sure to resonate with someone. It's not the game many may have hoped for, but regardless it IS good to have Mass Effect back again, and hopefully we'll see more of it in the future.

Other than that, fun characters. Engaging combat with an emphasis on movement. Good premise. Story on par with the original Mass Effect. Some questionable NPCs, some great NPCs. Cringey sex scenes but alright romance. Pretty much Mass Effect 1 with tighter gameplay, but released in a much more competitive market. If the masterpiece that was Witcher 3 hadn't come out, this game would probably be much higher rated.

Combat system is way much better than old Mass Effect titles and your enemies are god damm smart so you cant just cover in one place and fight you should jump change directions flank the enemy etc.

Also exploring with your vehicle is good dam fun especially in some planets...

I will get to the point, is Mass Effect Andromeda better than the original trilogy, no. That is 3 games that built up a great story. Mass Effect Andromeda pretty much redid the first Mass Effect game. I will go into the pros and cons of Mass Effect Andromeda.

    Pros

Combat gameplay, by far the best in the series. The jetpack never gets old, it is a wonderful addition to the game. It is fast pace, you can now tech combo, which I think was not possible in previous games.

Side quests, there are some who say the side quests are awful. They are not in comparison with previous Mass Effect games. I am loving it right now, Each planet has an enemy stronghold (at least the first 2 planets) that you have to take out and there are several steps before doing it. Taking out mini bases around the map, freeing Angara (new race) from their cells who then help you fight in that area. Then taking out the main bases has a couple objectives, for example taking out the hanger to destroy their aircraft, before fighting the leader of the base.

Enemy AI, is good. This game gives you a challenge. No longer is this game just a cover shooter, the enemy will flank you, they will sometimes directly rush you and try to overwhelm you, or they will play defense and stay behind cover. Now this is all based on fighting the Kett. The other faction the Revenant fight somewhat differently, they are always out in the open, and rarely ever use cover. Being that they are robots and some of them fly, it makes sense.

Multiplayer, If you like Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, this is better and harder than Mass Effect 3. They reduce the wave count to 7, which at first I was a little disappointed, but I remember the first 3 rounds in ME3 being super easy and a waste of time. So by having only 7 waves, they increased the difficulty.

    In between pro and con

This could either be a pro or a con, but being able to change what spec you are on the fly, is pretty cool. Not being a class does in my opinion reduce replay value. But in return they allow you to do new game + as many times as you want to learn every skill.

Story, The game does start off slow, but picks up when you meet the Angara. I enjoy the story, but in the end everyone has their own tastes.

    Cons

A lot of technical issues. Yes, the human animations are bad. But if you can play Fallout 4 without complaining, then you can play this.

    PS4 framerate drops is annoying.

Custom Creator is limited. I have to say it is very hard to make a person you really want. They don't allow free reign in who you want to make. You have to choose a preset face and then slightly adjust them. Hair styles are better than previous Mass Effect games, but the facial hair is abysmal.

Overall, this game is good. All this game needs is more polish. It is disappointing that the animations feel outdated. But if you can get past that, this game is a lot of fun to play.

Ever since the ending of ME3 turned half of the community into alt-right extremists, it seems a lot of gamers are simply programmed to believe Bioware can do nothing right. My favorite complaint is people calling Mass Effect Andromeda a spacefaring Dragon Age Inquisition, intending it as an insult, but seeming to forget that DAI won game of the year in 2014. Several of the user reviews appear to be written by people who didn't even play the game, as they reference "issues" I don't recognize from this game at all. A zero score? Really? "This is not a Mass Effect game"? Please!

This isn't surprising. All over the internet for months, if not years, I've seen hundreds of people swearing they'll never buy a Bioware game again, or prejudging Andromeda, etc. etc. In short, there appeared to be a lot of people who couldn't wait for the game to come out just so they could take a big dump all over it, without ever giving it a fair chance. Reading these comments here, the vitriol is so palpable that it's clear many writers are basing their reviews on pure politics and knee-jerk hating. Everyone is free to voice their opinions, of course, but let's stick with honest opinions that are formed on the actual qualities of the game, and leave our prejudices to the side.

For my part, I'm about 30 or so hours into the game and really enjoying it. There are some frustrations. The user interface is not as intuitive as the previous trilogy and the game is complicated. Comparisons with some aspects of MMOs are not out of line. However, so far it all makes the universe seem wonderfully expansive and real. All those planets in the first Mass Effect game that I wanted to land on and drive around on and explore, but couldn't? Now I can. All the Cerberus and merc bases that looked the same? There's huge variety here. This game actually fleshes those planets out.

One thing about another game I loved, Witcher 3, is that it could be quite dark. When Geralt encountered desparate people, they were truly desperate. The game was dark. Bioware games are generally more optimistic. Even if you played a pure renegade Shepard, there was always a certain humor and light to things. I wouldn't mind more darkness. I think I've only touched the surface of Andromeda so far, so perhaps I'll see hints of it, but knowing Bioware, I doubt it. Darkness in a story makes the lightness seem so much brighter (a big reason most fans love the Citadel DLC so much).

But dark or not, the story so far is engaging and there are so many characters, so many quests, that I feel like I'm going to be living in Andromeda a long time. For me, that's a good thing. And I like how the multiplayer ties in with the single player.

The complaints about the facial animations...look, it's the Frostbite engine, the same engine that was used in Dragon Age Inquisition. DAI had the same facial animations, the same character movements, etc. It's good and bad. But let's face it: the Mass Effect games were NEVER cutting edge in terms of gameplay, graphics, or anything technical. Bioware creates worlds that you want to spend time in. They feel real. Mass Effect Andromeda is that in spades. And the voice acting more than makes up for the occasionally odd facial animation, most of which are perfectly fine.

As for the "fetch quests," most of these missions are of the same quality as the side quests in Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which justifiably won Game of the Year in 2015. Witcher 3 is similarly huge. It's true that some of Andromeda's missions are a bit tedious (scan X number of these, etc.), but so were many of Witcher 3's missions. Also true of both games? Much of that is simply not required for anyone who just wants to focus on the main story. If you're a completionist and still hating it, then you should not have been interested in these games. After all, Bioware has been saying for months that Andromeda is the biggest game they've created yet.

As some have said, really this game takes us back to the first Mass Effect. It's hard to scale back from Reapers and Shepard, I know, but I think it's off to a fabulous start and I can't wait to see more.

I will say that the game running on Frostbite is a great thing to see as the visuals are great. I haven't encountered any of the buggy issues that were initially talked about at launch, and also the lack of emotional facial expression would be nice to see patched if possible (was done via update in Horizon: Zero Dawn). When you have the emotion of the characters play out along with the story, it helps with further immersing you into the experience.

Being able to openly explore the galaxy created is great. All the tools and weapons available too along with the archetypes for your character to level up with is cool. Especially how you can switch them up at will is a great touch. So I definitely enjoy the gameplay and the mechanics in the game. I feel that it gives a good balance between the action and the RPG/exploration elements of the game. There are many happenings on the side of the main quest that you can definitely get lost in and spend hours with exploring.

Overall, I'm having fun with the game. I expected a different game and it's definitely not the same Mass Effect from Gen 3, but this is a refreshing experience as a whole.

Some of the things people have complained about--the creepy facial animations, the awful, awful CC--those are all true. And, unfortunately, the first few hours of the game are filled with cutscenes of your ugly Ryder spouting clunky dialogue whilst looking like a possessed CPR dummy.

If you can work through that, tho, the game opens up into a gorgeous, sprawling world to explore and populate. The people you meet are not your BFF right away. You aren't a tested and respected N7, like Shepard was. Ryder is an unproven kid with an unasked for mission. Much of the "leadership" sees you as a pawn, or a tool, or a weapon, or an idiot. Ryder has to figure out the path to success, and that path is messy and complicated and incredibly fun.

The main quest is good--not great, but good enough to hang a story on. The real meat of MEA is the relentless fight for survival, respect and influence. Sometimes, I was reminded me of early Elder Scrolls games. Yeah, sure, you're the Chosen One, but can you walk from one town to the next without being killed by the enemy, or eaten by local fauna, or humiliated by a petty politician?

The paragon/renegade dichotomy is gone, replaced with a much more nuanced system, which I quite liked. The voice acting is, as always with BioWare, good to high quality. The writing overall was pretty good, if occasionally uneven. (Never terrible, and occasionally sublime.)

Personally, I found the game to be worth the time and money, and I'm very glad I powered through the first few cruddy hours. After that, I thoroughly enjoyed the game and have become as attached to it as I was to the OT.

This lift off is simply not good enough.
It should offer a new approach to the series and will set up a path for new adventures in the ME Universe.
Sadly its not that good, as the ME Series before was. I dont want to cry about the animations - they are not good for an AAA title. Just compare this game to AC Series, or other games and it should be equal or better. Especially when

Especially when it's about feelings, rpg, and character presentation.

But thats not the major point, even it is jumping into your face during the game.
The major point is - it's soulless.
I try to sum it up:
    - characters are not interesting enough
    - the world is huge but has no "exploration" feeling
    - conversations are simple
    - the experience is average to nearly good.
    - the action is lifeless and nearly a bit boring.

And this makes over all the game pretty bad.
This series was amazing and has so much potential.
It turns out that is droping like Dragon Age.
Don't expect to much, when you buy it right now.

Buy it when its cheap, my advise.
Right now, i am not satisfied at all and a bit sad to see what 5 years later came out.
As a fan, i am sad.

The pros of the game are the vast amount of content, gorgeously crafted planets, fun exploration and very fun shooting/combat mechanics. The cons as most have pointed out are the poor cut scene animations and in some instances worse dialogue than the previous M.E. games though some of the dialogue is excellent and some is poor, so it's a mixed bag that overall ends of being pretty decent. Another con is the clunky UI at times as well, Bioware made doing simple things a bit too difficult in certain instances (like crafting and the quest layout), but because there is so much to do and so much going on in the game it is somewhat understandable. The male Ryder animations seem to be better than the female Ryder for some strange reason. The graphics of the worlds in the game are absolutely incredible, you will find yourself admiring the beauty and vastness of the planets often if you are like me (this is something I did in M.E. 2 and 3 as well, but with the advanced technology nowadays this game obviously blows them away on that level). There are certainly a lot of things to like about the game and I think if you are a die-hard RPG fan who loves huge games with tons of content and an intriguing premise, as well as people who love sci-fi in general I would certainly recommend the game to you. Content, fun factor, and exploration are far more important elements of RPG's than graphics and cut scene animations so because the game nails the important parts of an RPG I feel the game deserves a good rating. The cut scene animations aren't that bad either, they end of being pretty mediocre, which is unfortunate but they truly don't take away from the insane amount of fun to be had exploring a brand new galaxy and the very compelling narrative ( I mean, come on, starting a civilization on a different galaxy, that's pretty cool)! The animations and movement at times are questionable and completely unnatural. The gameplay feels very sluggish and worn out. I'm approximately five hours in at this point and bored out of my mind.

There's also the matter of just how buggy this game is. First Co-Op is horrendous, P2P often results in a very laggy experience, when the host drops, there's a long waiting time before a new host is found (think COD:MW2 but much slower). The campaign bugs however, are much worse. Multiple missions have bugged out completely for me, resulting in impossible-to-complete missions. The "invisible" loading screens on planet are incredibly obvious, thanks to sliding all over the place after a brief screen freeze during explorations.

This isn't the Mass Effect you're looking for, this isn't the Mass Effect that anyone is looking for. Avoid this purchase. Even as a PS Plus title, I'd be reluctant to download it. Please trust the User Scores with this one. This game is not worth your money.

I personally would have preferred if the game focused more on the political problems that must be in an migration into already settled territory. (Different factions in the expedition forces as well as the natives give so much potential) It is touched upon in a lot of side content but the main content clearly is the fight that is already in the Helios-Cluster.
The fighting in the game also has two sides. On one side I like the more pro active approach you can take with the versatile (if stale) character development and new found movement. But Teammate and Enemy AI as well as a flat progression for "the pathfinder" makes it pale against other recent action-rpgs.

Without the technical problems of quests that get stuck and CTDs I would have given it a 6/10 but with the current bugs I had to subtract some points.

I purchased Andromeda a week ago, and began downloading right away ...it's a week later and I'm still downloading.

As for the game, what little I've been able to play seems lovely. I57500k, 16GB DDR, GTX1080 and everything runs beautifully, looks wonderful too. Judging from the first couple hours, don't play it as ME4 but instead as its own standalone thing and I think it'll be fine.

Final score averages the pain in the butt to be able to play vs the actual game play once it’s running.

I'm guessing the hatred here might stem from the overall game not measuring up to the unrealistic hype and pacing of the previous installments, the lack of Shepard or a Shepard-like main character, the fact that this game does little to tie itself to the original trilogy, and possibly people still upset over the ending of ME:3 and won't accept anything short of perfection now from Bioware.

I'm about 6hrs in so far and I'm enjoying it despite the glitches which I feel confident will be fixed over time. The story is interesting, some of the characters are well written and offset the terrible ones, which in my experience so far have just been limited to minor characters (I'm looking mainly at Addison here).

The gameplay itself is good, especially the fact you can now profile your skills and switch between them, no reason to start the game over from scratch if you'd rather focus on biotics instead of tech for instance. The research and crafting is interesting, especially how it breaks down tech from the Milky Way and that from Andromeda. If you've played the previous ME games you'll recognize a lot of the weapons, which I thought was a cool touch.

My biggest gripe so far are some of the side quests. I detest fetch quests or pointless running from one side of a map to another just to talk to one npc. But honestly this is a trap that virtually every RPG can't seem to avoid, other than the Witcher 3, but that game is the gold standard of RPGs now.

Overall I'd say this game is a solid 8 with potential to rise as high as a 9 depending on how I feel at the end of playing it. It certainly isn't a 4.4. There are a lot of truly bad games out there that should be rated that low, this isn't one of them. Aliens: Colonial Marines comes to mind.

A lot of jokes and dialogue are more technically thought out and implementation of the characters and side quests is more realistic than most RPGs. To find a worthwhile side quest you have to read through terminal logs and emails to see what the minor characters are actually thinking, and then follow their bread crumbs to start the quest.

The game is only grindy if you let it be. Pick what weapons you want to build and what kind of loadout you want, so that you don't waste any resources. The whole premise of the game is based around being short on resources and having to acquire everything you need to gain upgrades (kind of like a survival game).

I wish that it had the level of writing and facial animation as witcher 3, but I understand they may not have had the money or technical expertise on their team to do this so they played to the strengths of their dev team. The voice acting was a strong point imo, but occasionally the writing fails the characters.

9/10 would be 10/10 if it weren't for the lack of polish, and 11/10 if it had witcher 3 writing and animation.

Boosting around enemies, dodging, and shooting feels amazing in this game. The combat is fast, fluid, and overall very solid. The controls feel great too. Everything is responsive and tight. Using the jet pack to climb structures and dash around is a blast. The exploration is also very fun. I love exploring the huge planets and finding enemy bases and caves. Also finding side quests on each planet makes exploration rewarding, especially since side quests award some nice experience points and other rewards. Even the side quests are mostly interesting. They add a lot of lore to the game and make you care more about the characters. Even the fetch quests and monster hunts are interesting because they usually have some story element to them that adds to the lore in some way. Some are better than others, but for once, the side quests are well worth doing, unlike in Dragon Age Inquisition. Overall this is a fantastic game, marred by technical issues. Sure the story might not be as exciting as the original trilogy, but it offers something new. This story of discovery and uncertainty is exciting in its own right. Even the villain is memorable. Ugly females, crappy animations, crappy writing, uninteresting characters, fetch quests, glitches, bugs. This is all it comes down to. Full of SJW propaganda and ultimately an underwhelming Mass Effect experience. I hope Bioware learnt their lesson or Dragon Age 4 will go down the same way as Mass Effect Andromeda.

But apart from that, what really saddens me is that this IS a good game, I'm actually enjoying it as much as I enjoyed the previous Mass Effects. The characters have a huge potential, their personalities are similar to the ones on the original trilogy and every one of them has their humorous winks. Combat is delicious, flawless, runs very smooth, same as performance (I'm playing it high with a 970)
From my humble point of view, the community is raging like a 5 year old that didn't get the exact same toy that he wanted for Christmas. Pretty sad. For me, this game doesn't deserve the bad reviews it's getting, those only show an immature community.

However, I must take points off for the terrible soft cover system. It makes taking cover tricky, and it's very easy to come out of cover in a firefight. Also Losing the ability to actually control your squad members is a bummer also. However, you can have them direct their attacks. Lastly this game glitchy. It certainly needed more time for polish.

Bioware keeps reheating this awful sci-fi junk, like they do with Dragon Age for fantasy hungry fanboys.
It was fun with the first chapters, but it's been a free fall from there, with the last episodes (Inquisition and this ugly Andromeda) reaching new levels of awfulness.
Besides, do people seriously think it's fun to have relationships in games?

Horrible writing, awful combat and animation bugs we would mock in an indy title let alone a full price triple-A release. Utterly disgraceful.

As a mass effect game, it might be the worst in the series but as a stand alone PS4 game it's a pretty solid one. A lot of improvements from the previous ones in terms of explorations. However, the dialogue choices can be annoying when the summary doesn't end up being what you intended.

Mass Effect Andromeda takes place 600 years after the selfless sacrifice of the games iconic interplanetary arbitrator Shepard saved the milky way, Now you take on the role of the pathfinder named Ryder with the openness to choose either male or female after a brief stint through the lackadaisical character creator set up that doesn't even exceed that of saints row 2 you awake and are instantaneously thrown into your first mission things go awry rather fast as your father kicks the space bucket in a scene which shares the same emotional depth as a movie on the lifetime channel. From there you set out on your journey to wake other recipients up from their cryogenic slumber and colonize a new world, The premise sounds intriguing and promising in the game's opening acts but all the build up goes kerflooey as the story loses interest and instead focuses on the theriomorphic bad guys which for a game that built its previous titles on the moral ambiguity of extra-terrestrial lifeforms can feel a bit like a step in the wrong direction. The galactic map you view now feels like a masquerade as only a few planets are interactive with a large minority of them acting as a meta game which would feel more at home in the games companion app. Others would tackle the games abysmal animations and Writing for the projects shortcomings however the real story behind this product is far darker , After doing some research I came across an article post from a Ex-bioware employee that stated the game went through development hell and here are just a few other titbits that Bioware finds acceptable in this modern age  . Throughout the development of this game bro culture ran rampant and a large amount of conflicts were brought to the surface on top of the Ego that many top ranking team members boasted the top tier executives put staff on PIP programs as a way of getting rid of them this problem was further exacerbated by the leaders of the company  changing  '' Crunch time '' to a new buzzword with far more worse  repercussions. They called it  Finaling mode in this period the company would throw staff a catch 22 opportunity in which they would pay for their food but only if they ate it under thirty minutes and got back to work, Retaliation and harassment became more problematic and serious as each day went on forcing major team members to quit because of the work ethics and conditions they were being subjugated to on a daily basis which extended the more common known ones we as a community saw online . The members that left had falsified reports made by HR to smear their names after they complained about harassments from the management staff and finally many key staff members that worked on this project didn't get paid with the reason being the extension of the game was more important than their financial benefits. So in closing the once great storytellers and visionaries at Bioware have reduced to the disrespectful degenerates and all because of a game , So we ask was it all worth it ? . My heart goes out to the people that left the project after putting all they could into it and I wish them the very best on their future endeavours and as for this project its not worth the quantum fluctuation the Andromeda galaxy teeters on. A lot like Mass Effect , Andromeda might turn into a great game at a much later date. Expand

Let me start out that ME:A is not a bad game at all. But, you have to give it a little bit of time to grow on you and not all the negativity is completely untrue. It is a game that is Mass Effect, but when you are used to being the kick-ass Shepard, fighting for the survival of all life - Andromeda starts out weird.

Let me tackle the bad first. So that we have done that.
The character generation is a joke. Period. While they done a pretty good job at it with Dragon Age Inquisition, BioWare has completely missed it in this game. Not a single moment do you have the idea that you are playing with a character that you created all by yourself.

The character facial animations missed the mark completely. Expressions are too overdone. Take it a step back and I certainly hope that they will be toned down a little bit. It is a serious story that is being told, but it just doesn't come across like it. And if BioWare would simply update the textures of the eyes, I think the characters would look a lot less cartoony.

The setting doesn't really make sense. I still don't get why Andromeda is chosen for the new place to settle human life, while we have the whole Milky Way. Now, true, I haven't finished the game yet, who knows this is explained in the story - but right now; it sounds like overkill to populate another galaxy while there are enough planets in our own.

But to be honest, that is where I am with the 'bad'. The writing is often mentioned. Sure, the quality varies a lot, maybe more than other BioWare games. But I didn't find it so much of a problem. I don't think it is actually that bad.

It is a bit weird that after playing a strong character like Shepard for so many hours, that Ryder feels simply too much a newbie. That is a game design choice that clearly states that we are going to push this character to greatness all by ourselves, and not have a complete history dumped on us right from the beginning. I did not enjoy my character so much right from the start... but grew to like her a lot.

    The good.

I love the music. It is new, and still feels like a 90's sci-fi soundtrack in every good way.

The planet design is fantastic. There is a lot of attention to detail in the visuals here. Which makes it weird; the planets are so realistic, which makes it stand in contrast to the characters.

The game-play is pretty awesome. Sure, the interface in the menus is not that well designed as it has been done before by BioWare, but the in-game interface is great. The fighting is a real challenge, especially when the enemy is swarming you from all sides. The fighting never feels overwhelming though.

The game is big, and sure there is a lot of filler, which is exactly just that; you don't have to follow up on it. But if you are a person who wants to do everything, well, that is what you can do. Now, true, you can do filler a lot better if you just take a look at the Witcher 3 - which did a marvellous job in creating excellent filler material.
The size of the game is in no way a bad thing here. It really is about discovering new areas, and that feeling is well portrayed.
Still, if they kept it in the Milky Way, it would have made more sense.

I do have the feeling that BioWare has been force-fed the Frostbite engine, as EA has been doing with most of their studios. And I don't get why. Personally, although I do enjoy the large open-world like areas of both ME:A and DA:I - I think this type of engine would have worked better as a new IP. Not as a sequel to Dragon Age or Mass Effect.

But all in all, this is not a bad game at all, but get through the beginning - get out to your first real planet: EOS and once you have been driving around, start solving some puzzles and get a bit more story-line fed - the feeling of a real Mass Effect game starts to get to you. But until that time, yes, you will have to get used to a couple of changes. Some bad, most of them good.

But this is a game you would like to play - there is, after all - a complete galaxy to explore.

What genre first comes to mind when you think of the original Mass Effect (2 and 3 to a lesser extent)? RPG. This is not. This is Mass Effect: Battlefront. The decisions you make feel petty in the grand scheme of things and you cannot control your squad mates in any meaningful way. This feels more like a single player shooter MMO with some RPG elements thrown in.

If it is trying to be an RPG, characters, story, and dialog are paramount. All fall flat here. RPG players live in a post-Undertale society and expect intelligent, emotional writing. This feels as though it was oriented towards elementary and highschoolers, which seems strange for a mature-rated game. You are supposed to feel immersed in an RPG - you are supposed to embody the protagonist. Regardless of what gender you choose, you feel like a fool with the logic, choices, and writing in the game. I really kept wondering if anyone on the writing team had ever stepped foot in a university. If you are working for one of the most beloved RPG gaming companies, you should be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in your field. This feels as though BioWare hired temps or used an evolutionary algorithm to write this. Think of the most cliché game or movie you have seen, this is what you get here.

Graphics; where do I begin? Again, if you are hired by a "prestigious" company like BioWare to make games, you should be an SME in your field. This game is littered with wonky looking characters and models. This game looks outdated for Mass Effect 1. The human models are anthropomorphically inaccurate. The humans seem more similar to australopithecine rather than homo-sapiens-sapiens. We live in a post-Witcher 3 world, we as Millennial and younger consumers would rather have you take your time and make an incredible game than try to rush (not sure how five years is rushed) something to market. The cultural landscape has changed, we are not Baby-Boomers or gen-Xer's trying to keep up with the Joneses, we prefer quality over quantity.

If you are looking for an average shooter with some decent scenery, I still would not recommend this. EA and BioWare do not live in a vacuum; they have to compete in the market with other companies whom have made much better RPG shooters (Borderlands, for example). I would not recommend supporting BioWare or its publisher (meaning, do not spend your hard-earned cash on their products) until they can make a competent game.

Since Mass Effect 2 and 3, BioWare made the decision to move away from what had been their primary demographic, RPG players, to more mainstream individuals that prefer generic shooters, sports, and action games - and this even lets them down. Nothing special to see here in any form. Save your money for a company and a game that deserves your support, such as Horizon Zero Dawn, Breath of the Wild, Nier Automata, or Persona 5.

The only place where this game isn't abysmal is gameplay. The controls are actually pretty fluid. To bad the awful enemy AI ruins it. No where is this as apparent as in multiplayer where enemies literally try to stand on you. Just walking towards your location without regard for their own safety. And on the subject of multiplayer, enemies are in some cases immune to damage, can shoot through walls and their bullets literally follow you around corners. Instead of having them aim or even reloading, they just constantly hit you with a locked on string of bullets and Lazer beams that follow you while jumping and dashing, never actually missing.

This is the biggest piece of **** I've ever played. The single player is tied to multiplayer, which is designed to be almost unplayable if you don't drop $100 on micritransactions first. Bravo.

It might be the biggest, most complex and action packed game in the franchise, but Mass Effect: Andromeda is also the least convincing one. The dated facial animations, the inconsistent writing quality and the regularly occurring bugs take you out of the experience too often. On top of that, BioWare has not used the concept of a whole new universe to its full potential, which often makes it feel like Mass Effect: Andromeda has not left our Milky Way at all.
