The development is so poor that even the transitions are non-existent, the character's eyes twitch in different directions, and maps just don't load on occasion. The gameplay features are poorly translated from previous games in what feels like a soul-less attempt to win over former fans. They never even address the third game which was one of the worst cliff-hangers in gaming history.

The only reason I'm rating this game above a 0 is that I was able to sit through it in it's entirety and the game is playable. Buggy, boring, bland, and soul-less, but playable.

This game had a massive budget and took five years to produce. This is nothing more than pathetic. Don't play this game and don't give EA games your money if this is the type of product they produce.

    Facial animations that take away from what should have been emotional scenes;

    Walking animations of some characters;

Loading (like how long do you have to stare at a door for it to open, sometimes so long that if there is a way around that door you should probably take it. The loading moving around the galaxy map is ridiculous to the point you might not want to explore anymore.

SAM talking about the temperature changes and mining console over and over again, sometimes seconds apart.

Bugs, SO MANY BUGS. You can be talking with a guy and killed by an enemy mid conversation and get a corrupted save; you can be talking with a guy and he just walks over 30 feet away from you while in conversation. Doors just refuse to open unless you reload, landing animation loops. And severe hiccups in frame rate, sometimes freezing the game 0 fps for a few seconds.

    Controls seem very counterintuitive.

Crafting seems overly complicated and severely limited by research points.

I love companion stories, but I hate having to constantly finish a main quest, a planet and always have to go around the ship talking with everyone (sometimes multiple times) until they have nothing left to say except their usual greeting.

    ----------------------

On the positive side, the game is massive. Clocked in 72h to finish. Was impressed at the amount of interesting dialogue in the world (you get the awful line here and there). While many disagree with me here, I feel the game needs to showcase that better. Quest givers sometimes have no markers, you get relevant chats with random npcs that the game never really gives you a reason to interact with. Some quests end and you assume there is a dialogue change with the quest giver or an npc mentioned in the quest and I have found that is true, but you have to actively pursue them, the game never even hints that you might get more story points if you go there. (while this rewards exploration it also means the average player will never really get the full picture or the sense that there is more)
The story is fine, nothing groundbreaking, but a satisfying tale.

I bought the deluxe edition and then refunded it after beating the game. It was $100 CAD... ONE HUNDRED. The animations were sub-par but you get use to them after a while except when they make you laugh when it's supposed to be cute. Romancing the only interesting character, Vetra, you get a plastic-face Ryder when it's supposed to be touching. The voice acting was also... inconsistent.

The only thing I liked about it was the combat, but even that got boring when you were just doing fetch-quests or annoying scan missions. It was simply.... Not a good game, at most it was a 5/10. The racist and sexist pigs behind it was a real turn off, and with literally 95% of the game being disappointingly bland, they didn't deserve my money. especially when I was able to finish it in 17 hours and have no desire to replay it, or do any of the 100% viability tedium.

Is ME:A a horrible game? No. It's not a horrible game, it's not even a bad game, but it isn't a good one either. Wait until it goes on sale for a more reasonable price, $30.99 USD, $40.99 CAD.

TL;DR: The shockingly bland writing, missions, characters, and downright sub-par animations ruined the game. The sexist/racist pigs behind it made it even more refundable. The best combat of the series brings it up to a 5.5/10 in my books. I will buy it again when the price drops.

Characters are fun if not incredibly complex, but then again, the same could be said of Mass Effect's previous casts. Overall I've sunk a good twenty five hours into the game and haven't felt disappointing by it yet. Don't be fooled by 0 and 1 score reviews that make the claim that this "Isn't Mass Effect", as this definitely is a Mass Effect game, and worthy of the name, despite its handful of flaws. Expand

Update: After playing it for a week, I can honestly say it got much better once I figured out how to do a lot of things. It really is overly complicated. The facial mechanics are garbage for sure, and the dialog is funny it's so bad, but it is rewarding to build new colonies, and see everything evolve. Yes, it has its problems. The facial animation is not what I would expect from a triple-A game on a next-gen console, but it's hardly as bad as people are making it out to be. Addison, one of the Nexus (Andromeda Citadel equivalent) fixture characters is probably the worst, but you don't spend much time talking to her, and honestly, it's just not that awful.

I've seen quite a few reviews commenting on the ugliness of the women in the game, particularly the female Ryder twin. Personally, I find the female Ryder to be attractive to look at. More to the point, she looks believable. She's a space explorer, not a supermodel. Looks all come down to personal tastes, though, and if you don't like her look, you can customize her. This really is a non issue.

Overall, this is a beautiful game, and the combat is much improved. The Nomad replaces the Mako and the Hammerhead, and is likewise much improved, though it has no armament.

Probably my biggest criticism is that unless you're already a Mass Effect fan, there's not enough context. Biotics having a hard time fitting in, for example, need more explanation for a new player, as do things like the Krogan animosity toward the Salarians and Turians. Also, if you run a biotic character, Cora Harper, your one biotic human crew member does not offer any unique dialogue options like Kaiden Alenko did in Mass Effect in your early conversations with him. Since this the first game in a new series (?), I would have like to have seen more context to connect new players with the existing Mass Effect universe.

This game is written with the understanding that you already know the universe, and have already played through the first trilogy, which brings me to my final criticism: it does not feel like a Mass Effect game, not initially. The class and skill interfaces are set up very differently, and the bumpers don't bring up the power and weapon wheels like the previous games did. Certainly not a deal breaker by any means, but as a longtime player of the series, it meant that I had to relearn the game, rather than just jump right in as I was able to with ME2 and ME3.

The story takes a bit longer to get moving, but it makes sense, as it's an exploration game, rather than a military campaign with an exploration element, like the first game was. Once it gets going, though, it's a decent story.

All in all, this is a solid game, and if you liked the original Mass Effect, then you'll probably like Andromeda.

This is my first review. I felt it was necessary given the situation.

ME:A is not a bad game. It is however, not a good game. I would go so far as to say it is more of a "mass effect clone" than a mass effect game. That may seem harsh, but if you try it out, you will understand. If you are a huge fan, and have played the originals for hundreds of hours, you will really understand what I mean.

For the people saying that there are no animation glitches - that is true. I have not experienced animation glitches, but the game does have very poor animations. First year in animation school bad. And they are plentiful. It would be one thing if they were some side character off in the distance, but this game takes about a decade or two of steps back in animation. It is painful sometimes. Like physically so.

The characters are not as bad as some people have made them out to be. I can tell that they wanted them to feel familiar without being too similar to the characters we grew to love in previous games. But, I do think they miss a beat with poor introductions and poor followup. If you take my advice (listed below), you will see what I mean, but this tends to repeat itself.

Combat is fun. I am playing on insanity difficulty and enjoying it. It is much more tactical and much more "cover-shooter" this way. The powers and abilities are excellent. There is an appropriate amount of depth in this system. Sometimes I feel my companions are not really helping, but I am supposed to be the real BAMF - not them - so that is fine. Nothing more to say here.

The writing is sub par. And ultimately, it isn't what defeats the game or the experience. There have been plenty of games with poor writing that are still fun (some even make it top 100 games of all time list), and it isn't as if ME:A doesn't have a good premise or a good general story. But - and you will see this if you take my advice (listed below) - between 30% - 50% of the dialog is just... bad. I get the sense that whoever wrote it is just not cut out to be a writer, but I don't want to attack anyone. The truth is that a lot of the issues ME:A suffers from should have been noticed and fixed by upper management. In general, it feels as if the game had zero oversight. Writing is one of those things.

The scanning system, exploration system, and crafting system are all excellent. If that is what Mass Effect is, I am writing the wrong review. These systems are great. I believe these systems/mechanics were fleshed out very well in comparison to the problem areas. I do not know much about game development, but I do know that I would take ME:A without any of these systems if it meant the animations were at least on par with the other games, the characters were properly delivered, and the writing was better. Because those three things are more important to me than fleshed out systems like the ones above.

My advice is to buy the game on steam and give it the hour it deserves. I believe you will see what I have come to see, and that is that this game is more of an off-shoot, or a clone, than it is Mass Effect. And it really has nothing to do with Shepard or the other Mass Effect games. This game has a great premise, I would even say a "Mass Effect Premise," but broadly speaking, it fails to deliver - on nearly everything. Its execution is its biggest issue.

So buy it and play for an hour on Steam (if you are on console, do not purchase this game until you have tried it). If you enjoyed that hour and were not bothered by the glaring issues, then by all means keep playing. If not, refund it through Steam and write a review of the game to help other people make a decision.

After 30+ hours, I can safely say that this is a journey worth taking. SPOILERS FOLLOW. However, I stand by what I said above. It is easy for me to look past the fact that half of the aliens that make ME's universe so amazing are missing. It is easy for me to look past the fact that animations are actually horrid. It is is easy for me to look past the fact that Bioware seems to be making their female character less attractive than the models they are based on (but not the male characters? - I thought this was propaganda but wtf it's actually not. Not to mention their personalities are lacking. Miranda, Liara, and Tali, please come back. You were all intelligent, powerful, and beautiful female characters. You were all someone my daughter could aspire to) I can even - unbelievably - look past the fact that most of the game's quests are fetch quests that are poorly written and just not very fun.

Here's why: Because what's left is actually good.

Overall, this feels like a game more from the early to mid 2000's than 2017, in both good and bad ways. But since we are in 2017, it just feels like a solid concept that was poorly, lazily, and half-assed executed. It could have been so much more. EA is really starting to put out a lot of games like this.

Edit: After playing this game some more, I sat down last night and decided to give it up. I just don't care for the gameplay and have absolutely zero connection or care for these characters. Part of the appeal of a good RPG is to be drawn into and immerse yourself into another world, and Mass Effect Andromeda absolutely fails to draw you in.

However, once the first couple of hours are completed, the game opens up into a true open world(s) game that is utterly incredible. The story lines are compelling, the characters are very likable and relatable, and the dialogue is very realistic. Conversations don't fit the typical rigid and over exaggerated format common to many games, which may not work for gamers who are more accustomed to interacting with video game NPCs than having conversations with people in the real world. After 60 hours of gameplay, Mass Effect: Andromeda has impressed me more than I had ever expected and has become one of my favorite titles. I enjoyed this game even more than the original series. The story isn't quite as interesting as the reaper concept, but the rich open world exploration teeming with fun missions to do combined with the amazing lore the Mass Effect series has built up made this one of the funnest games I have ever played. Neither me nor my wife has experienced any glitches or strange/ugly facial animations with our Ryders. It took me a couple tries to design one that I liked, but once I did I had no issues throughout my play through. It seems that a lot of the people giving Mass Effect: Andromeda negative feedback are going into the game expecting to find something bad, only instead of reviewing it objectively, they critically search for flaws to reaffirm their expectations. This type of behavior, along with people rating it who have never even played it has left a game easily worthy of a 10/10 with a user score of 4.6. Expand

Clearly all the ratings that are below 5 are unfair, but on the other hand all the scores above 7 are a joke. It applies to the critics as well as the players.

I think we lost the understanding of a AAA game, and the developers are using it every year, at least most of them. They want to drain us from cash without much effort, and the worst thing is that players let them do it.

What I require from a AAA game, and does ME Andromeda deliver:
    1. Good and involving story and characters - I have to say not really. Story is bland and the characters are terrible.
    2. Fun and satisfying gameplay - It's good, combat is a lot of fun, scaning , exploring ect. is also ok.
    3. Graphics and animations - Bacgrounds looks stunning on different planets. Animations, lip sync ect. below any criticism. Some games from Ps 3 and Xbox 360 had better.
    4. Good music sound and voice acting - Music is good, a little worse than in ME trilogy, but still pretty good. Backround sound, fighting sound is also quite good. Voice acting is terrible, shallow with lack of emotions.
    5. Bug, glitch, crash free - I know it's imposible with so big games, but the fewer the better. I didn't have many issues, but I know from the intenet that there is a major problem.
    6. Fun multiplayer, if there is one - Lazy horde mode with microtransactions, so basically there is none multiplayer. There is only an excuse for microtransactions.

To sum up. Andromeda would ba a fun game for players new to ME franchise. Of course it would be also a pretty good game, if Bioware was a newcommer. But they are not. They spend the last 4 years, with a decent budget and a know how, to deliver a dissapoitement, not only to the fans of Mass Effect trilogy, but also to other players with a common sense. It's not the worst game in the world, it's not a AAA game either. It's a product below the level of a studio that Bioware once was. A shame, I was counting on them.

There are a few annoying bugs in the game too but overall it's a good experience. Some people do not like the characters but they are big shoes to fill from the original Mass Effect party members, Garrus, Wrex, Liara etc. I like Drak and PeeBee in Andromeda and Liam is alright too. If you are a Mass Effect fan, i would recommend this to you, even if you never played Mass Effect games before but like the idea of it, i would also recommend it too. In short.....

    The Good
    - Graphically great but with some texture pop-in at times
    - Drack and Peebee are cool.
    - It's Mass Effect
    - Story is decent
    - Combat is good, good range of powers and such.
    - Patches will fix some of the issues that people have trouble with

    The Bad
    - Texture pop-in sometimes
    - No guns on the Nomad vehicle
    - Some audio bugs
    - Sometimes save files won't load or will take a while, even on SSD.
    - Addison, her face is tired apparently.
    - not being able to save when you are doing a mission. Have to rely on save points (sometimes they dont work)

The story fits into the mass effect universe, it's not Sheppard or the reapers but cmon shut up, it's still same awesome sleek futuristic mass effect universe with all those very entertaining shoot outs and goofy characters. The way people have made the game sound in reviews, youd expect to hit R2 and not have the gun fire. It's not that bad. Yes some goofy facial animations and occasional bugs but nothing to give the game a 0 over. Therefore I give this game a 10 you cacabums

When you start your journey in M.A Andromeda, one cannot help but allow that 12 year old imagination to take over. You know, like when you used to pick up a broom and take the head off, and pretend it was a wizard's staff and put yourself smack bang in the middle of an epic moment on a battlefield? You know, like when you used to pick up a broom and take the head off, and pretend it was a wizard's staff and put yourself smack bang in the middle of an epic moment on a battlefield? When I got my hand on the game, I closed the blinds in my apartment, turned my TV and sound system on high, and let the immersion begin. However here in lies some of M.A's biggest faults, "Immersion".

I am sure anyone reading this review already knows what I am referring to (bugs, comical facial expressions or lack of expressions). The environment that you are thrown into is beautiful. From the very first planet you try to make habitable, to the exterior and interior of your ship, to the combat system, it is all absolutely perfect. But humans are naturally programmed to recognize facial expressions and body language, so much so, that it makes up the majority our our interpretations of the subjects intentions and emotions. I hear in the voice acting what the writers are trying to tell me, but it doesn't gel with the characters facial expressions or lack there of.

The story line is acceptable. I feel for some characters and not for others. For example, when I return to my ship after having done all I can on a planet, I fast forward through the conversations with some of my team as I have no interest in their story. Whilst there are some characters that I care about, and even one character that I tried to stay faithful towards, but I fell into temptation with another female character and hit the "sure, let's fool around" command.

For exploring you are given a mean looking 6 wheeler rover to explore planets with, along with a satisfying build tree for skills, weapons and armor. You do not however get to build armor for your teammates which is a bit of a let down, and their skill tree is a bit limited, but you can still make them stronger in the begging in certain areas to choose whether or not to party with tanks, snipers, etc.

The online game play allows you to do something different in between quests which I thoroughly enjoy. It also gives you in game single player rewards for your main story which is a nice touch.

Look, I think the only thing that holds this game back is the bugs on the characters faces, body language and some game play. Otherwise this game has amazing game play features, good story line, relate-able characters, a fantastic and gorgeous open world galaxy to explore, and replay value.

M.A Andromeda is detailed, there is lot of l.o.r.e to imerse yourself into, the quests and interesting and even though some side quests can be repetitive, there is still a great satisfaction clearing a planet of all quests. M.A is a great game and shouldn't be judged by reviews, but rather by keeping an open mind and realizing that if you had fun as a 12yo pretending to be a wizard in your own mind, then you can easily become a pathfinder in the Andromeda Galaxy using a PS4 Pro and 4K TV.

    Enjoy comrades.

    3) Jumping is a nice change.
    The bad:
    1) Facial animations. Every other reviewer is hitting this topic no need to go into more detail. I'm
playing on max settings and the original trilogy had better animations.
    2) No mini map or radar. this is a space exploration game are you telling me your wrist watch
scanner (Not an omnitool that's clear) can't give you a map?
    3) The new cover system is janky and all over the place.
    4) Companions are useless and combat ineffective at the best of the times.
    5) Wildlife diversity.
    6) 3 abilities can only be used at a time.
    7) Space Saduko.

    The WTF!

    1) Who in the name of the goddess screened or hired these voice actors? Seriously did EA/Bioware blow their whole budget on a hack actress from GOT? The guards from Skyrim have more emotional depth than 99% of the characters in the game. It's so bad that I skipped through almost all the cutscenes but left the subtitles on so I wouldn't miss the non-existent plot.

    2) Character creation..................Did you even try EA/Bioware?!?

    3) Plot. This was a totally shoehorned politically driven plot and it doesn't even try to hide it. two examples are on Eos and a Nexus follow up. 1st example and spoiler alert once you set up an outpost on EOS this after the first two were slaughtered by the kett if you set up a military base people on the nexus will actually have a protest.....really?!? 2nd example while doing a misc side quest you are given the option to share natural gas with exiles and you companions will try to make you feel bad for fracking..........Political Bias aside the plot drags and gives you no incentive to make any decision it is linear, there is no real choice in the game that will change the outcome. After 40+ hours I have no urge to playthough again to find out, for a Mass Effect game passing on a New game + option should be a red flag. it's just an all around bad plot in a majority of the game with no pacing or depth.
    4) Playing on a Brand new pc i7 with a 1080 I ran across very few game breaking bugs but more than a dozen times I was forced to hard stop the game in order to fix some i.e getting stuck on invisible walls, falling through the ground, cutscene bugs (getting killed by an enemy while talking to an npc in the cutscene. It's clear there was no quality control in this game at all because running into any bug on an average of every two minutes. Fallout 4 on launch felt better.

In closing this is my first review and I don't have an editor to proof read but I had to write a review for this game because this trend of pushing personal politics and feelings into games at the expense of a quality product is no longer acceptable. EA doesn't care that much is obvious but I expected more out of bioware the company that brought us Dragon Age Origins, Kotor 1-2, 99.5% of the Mass Effect Trilogy. This abomination is not a Mass Effect game. I could take a poop and put the Mass Effect Logo on it and it would have more character depth than this game. RIP Mass Effect.

The writing is also mediocre at best, given that Mass Effect writing hasn't always been high literature but at least it was funny, charming and enough to get you invested in the story. I'm already 25 hours into Andromeda and i just cant get myself to care about the stories and the characters. My biggest disappointment were the mundane fetch quests that just littered the game. It seemed like a majority of the quests were a simple go here find 3 of these and sent you off to all corners of the map, and it got really old really fast. To me this is a must play for any die hard fan of the series, the majority of criticism's like that overplayed harping on the facial animations can for the most part (operative) be ignored.

    Pros:
    - Looks Good, feels fresh.
    - Superb world design.
    - New story that's obviously building towards something big.
    - Connecting with (most) new characters on an emotional level is easy.
    - Gameplay feels fairly smooth and polished.

    Cons:
    - Occanially severe framedrops and freezes.
    - Default Sarah Ryder's facial features/motions are off the mark. (even for Bioware standards)
    - Played version 1.04, non-ciritical bugs and glitches are still very present, experienced no progress halting issues myself.

First is the graphics, while some of the graphics are on point in regards to the scenery and environment, some of the female characters look as if they are dead, no emotion, no facial expressions, and some of the characters voice actors sound as if they are just going through the motions instead of acting. The writing of the characters responses are laughable, like when the human character in charge of the Nexus says, "My face hurts..." or "You'll be a Pathfinder when you Path-find something"

In retrospect Mass Effect 3 had better character expressions and animation that Andromeda. Bio-Ware had five years to work on this game, one would think the game would look better, not worse. This game could have been awesome. The way it was released make it mediocre at best.

Played the game for 30hrs now and let me put it this way, the game focuses on narrative and that is what the mass effect franchise is. This means that facial animation, dialogue, morality and difficult choices play the core vital role. The 5 yr development should have focused on those parts and not multiplayer/micro-transactions/combat and environmental aesthetics. Yes those are nice to have but this is a MASS EFFECT an RPG genre game and not some shooter/instagram vista photo-op game. Morality and choice also should have played a role as it will deepen and make the characters more likeable.
    And who filrts like this..
“You definitely have an interesting perspective on the interplay between faith and science.”
    who says that.. dialogue please!
The fetch side quest is just terrible i would love it if they took a little bit of consideration crafting it weaving through a mini story and not just some go here and get me x number of stuff.
I never felt that i needed to take any of my crew mate in certain maps. I remember back in mass effect 2, i was torn in choosing who to bring in a mission because it was a Krogan planet but here. Meh same crew from start to finish. no reason to change. i try to be a douche bag to them but no reaction wtf? where are the tough choices with reason and weight. Everything feels rushed why to compete with horizon, zelda, nioh, nier? IF that is the reason for not delaying this massive project then i pity the dev teams. Just a delay for another 3months to polish things would have made this a real gem.

People are saying animations can be patched well stfu have you worked in animation? do you know how hard to do the whole thing again? it doesn't solve in a patch update it requires either an overhaul of the entire game.

This long rant is because i value the work BioWare has given its gamers but this game is not upon their standards nor worthy of the Mass Effect franchise. This should have been another IP instead.

Since Scott Ryder looks like an identical twin of a certain handsome game review I know, not mentioning any superken from superkengaming names...
    I didn’t have to edit a thing
But if you do choose to customize, the game will make a twin version of your character who does show up in your story…
Mass Effect fans seem to hate this entry...
But im not a mass effect fan and I loved it.. I played the first 2 games in preparation for this one and found them to be pretty boring... Mass Effect Andromeda is more of my play style… and without having played mass effect 3, As of right now, Andromeda is my favorite game in the series…
For the fans of the series, there’s a lot here to love as much as there is to be desired…
    And I don’t mean just the aliens…
There are tons of missions to do here outside of the campaign, including loyalty missions like everyone loves from mass effect 2…
But there is a noticeable lack of emphasis on your crew this time around…
Because the story is about making a planet inhabitable for life forms to call home
    Wasn’t really interesting though…
So lack of interesting story, boring crew members... I understand why fans of the series don’t like this game... what about the rest
Lets get the elephant out of the room right now
You cant romance natalie dormers character
I should honestly stop the review right here and give it a 0/10 for playing with my heart like that…
But they did throw some real nudity and booty in here.. So slightly forgivable... but... Natalie Dormer guys...
How could you do this to me?
But the worlds in mass effect Andromeda are beautiful and the campaign which takes about 12 hours one its own is actually fun to run through…
The direction system does a great job of telling you where to go, though the command to show the point on the map frustratingly doesn’t always work…
Not sure on the rules behind when it will and when it won’t…
But the fact that clicking down doesn’t always show you where you’re going to is annoying…
And many missions here are set in an open world that you can explore with the nomad, that drives perfectly…
You also have a jump pack for hopping gaps and doing sick in air kills with your weapons that are equippable with mod slots…
And you can upgrade these weapons as well as unlock special moves for you and your crew with the skill points you get for leveling up…
My only issue with the campaign is the annoying scanning…
You’re asked to scan items way too frequently, stopping the flow and excitement of missions…
And the final stretch of the game feels recycled… and therefore feels like a grind…
I was happy with the games ending..
But the boring final stretch to get there almost seemed unworthy it, especially with a forgettable throwaway feeling boss fight…
I understand why mass effect fans don’t like this game... its very action third person cover based shooter heavy... very few dialog options that matter to make this feel like an rpg…
But if you look at this as just a game without the name mass effect attached, Andromeda is a solid experience…
People have noted animation problems.. but I didn’t notice any in my play through, and besides a few awkward transitions, my play through was fairly clean of bugs
And when you’re done with single player you can hop right into multiplayer where you’ll spend 15 seconds and realize you’re not going to waste your time on this garbage just like ea should have
This mode is a lazy and boring co-op objective based wave mission mode.
Every game developer in the world play uncharted lost planet 2 and lost planet 3 multiplayer
IF you don’t plan on making anything like them in your 3rd person shooter
save your time and money and don’t bother.
Despite the disappointing multiplayer, and disappointing RPG bioware DNA elements…
Mass Effect Andromeda is a solid experience that as a 3rd person shooter action adventure fan you shouldn’t pass up
    I give Mass Effect Andromeda
    an 8/10

It's quite hard to take this game seriously with the absolutely terrible cutscenes and poorly optimized gameplay. Simply put - it isn't up to the standard it should be. That's not to say everything is bad about it, some of the combat feels quite good, and the sound design is great. But not enough for me to keep this game unfortunately.

How are so many people giving this such a bad rating? I concede, the human animations and writing are sub par, but so what? The combat and gameplay are excellent, and the open world is gorgeous. I'd be willing to bet even the people giving it zeroes actually like this game. Unfortunately people are morons, and I guess they were expecting an immortal game blessed by the tip of God's penis. Instead, because there are a couple flaws like facial animations to latch onto, trolling this game is the "cool" thing to do. Grrr EA, how dare you make a really good game and not the world's most awesomest game ever! Zeroes for you!

Long story short: Ignore the trolls. If you're on the fence, just wait for the price to drop, but I definitely think it's worth picking up at some point.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay, so I have now completed the game and I am sad to say that this is the worst Mass Effect title so far. What happened this time is that I did not complete the game 100% before moving onto the epilogue, but left out a few planet systems and small tasks. This has never happened before to me. I would always take great pride in finishing every little bit of Bioware’s games.

I knew about the character animations being joked about when I started, and I had my experiences with it as well. I do not know why, but the human animations and faces were much poorer than the aliens'. Further, the human human female faces were horrible compared to human males' faces.

I do not know if this plays onto the Bioware SJW problem or if Bioware's animators are just terrible at designing humans but good at designing aliens. Also, romance is a big deal of Bioware’s games and I found it quite weird and dangerous to speak with my companions. I had to watch out so much not to end up in a gay relationship with some of my male companions. Maybe add gay/bisexual modifier in the options? None of the female companions were attractive, and the only human female which was heterosexual, Cora, looked like a lesbian.

Okay back to the game. The game started off with amazement. Everything was new, and you had a whole galaxy to explore... Then... Slowly... It became the same, over and over. You began hating all of the travelling time between planets and systems in Andromeda. Goddamn unescapable cut scenes for every flight, which made exploring planets unnecessarily tedious. Make the cut scenes skippable when you are done loading!!!

Andromeda was big, but it was just a big load of the same materials used over and over. Bioware had focused too much on quantity and too little on quality. Now, Andromeda is NO way as big as the Witcher 3. Andromeda feels big because there are so many planets to visit but you can only visit 4-5 planets in total. Every other Bioware game actually felt bigger than Andromeda, they felt bigger due to the quality they had.

And then there are the options in your dialogues. You cannot be evil in Mass Effect Andromeda. The Angarans fear that you come as conquerors, but you can never act like one. It is all about appeasement and creating a social circle. You thought sacrificing the Council in ME1 was evil? Well… Here you can sacrifice… Nobody, and nobody important is at the risk of dying.

Lastly, the epilogue. Without too many spoilers, I would say that it was the least fist-pumping moment. It was more built to lead up to the next Mass Effect game, but had nowhere the same vibe that Mass Effect 1 had.

I am not sure if Bioware is the Bioware that was capable of creating Dragon Age Origins and ME1 and 2. They have lost of a lot of the old employees and seem more focused on diversity of characters and sexuality, and quantity over quality.

One last topic. Bugs. They exist and some of them made me go crazy. It is the kind of bugs that force you to load over to a previous save because a quest is broken.

They had 5 years since ME3 and 3 years since DAI to create this game. They went the wrong way. The game is not worth its price. I would advise you to save your money until it is patched and the price has dropped.

I repeat. The game is not worth it with its current price and its current state. Try it in a year.

It comes closest to the original ME game in terms of exploration and discovery but ME:A surpasses the original game in terms of beautiful worlds, a slick new star ship, and ground vehicle. However the strengths that were present in the original trilogy in terms of a story, plot and fully fleshed out characters are somewhat lacking in ME:A. The story, although engaging, lacks the thought provoking plot that was present in ME 1 in regards to the introduction of world, finding clues, and uncovering a conspiracy. The characters of ME:A for the protagonist, squad mates, and other NPCs are interesting, but they do not bring the same attachments that were felt in ME 2 and 3. When tragedy hits or there is a sense of urgency for example, our protagonist and others lack real emotions such as anguish or anxiety that would undoubtedly be present in fleshed out characters. Lastly, far from the pioneer animation that was present in ME in 2007, facial and body animations in ME:A are at times a bit off putting especially in conversations with other characters in the game. They can be distracting and unintentionally comical often breaking sobering moments of the story.
In short, Mass Effect Andromeda falls short of being a great game. And although there are some disappointments to be had, it's still a good game and there is plenty there to keep one entertained. 7.5 out of 10 .

Bland characters, bland dialogue, convoluted (and virtually useless) menus, and ugliness in all things animated. Combat is seemingly faster and more intense, but they stripped away the ability to control your teammates and use more than three abilities. As a result, being an Adept biotic now is boring as all hell. In a battle, your companions move erratically and bizarrely, coupled with their incredible inability to do almost anything useful you will find yourself wondering why the hell Bioware even bothered. You're not a commander anymore — you're a god damn chump with two lame-ass AI following you. So combat, in the end, kind of ruined too.

It's impressive that beauty of the galaxy is incorporated, but beauty of creatures and species is not. Why force me to be a hideous, awkward af squeeb face, no matter how much I tweak in character creation? Surely beauty of the face must still exist in the future. Or at least give me some in-game backstory or reason as to why every human looks like a troglodyte, grease baboon with antithetical emotional responses. In each dialogue interaction, I'm either laughing or just creeped the **** out. How is it that with more money, resources, and time, the characters are worse than 10 years ago? No one on the team cross-referenced and said "Oh **** it was better before..."?

The game is a spit in the face of all Mass Effect fans. I felt masochistic playing it, a weird sense of self-torture and empty promise. Waste of money. ****ING REGRET buying it. EA can suck it.

In fact there is a ton of glitches and bugs that take away from the game experience. Some of them are small and so can be huge and make you shut off your console and come back into the game. Now even with all that this game is an experience you can jump in and just explore space and have a brand new experience in the Mass Effect universe. The combat has been updated and is extremely fun and smooth! I can use my biotic abilities to jump around the battlefield and destroy the enemy with my shotgun! Or I can just go into the pause menu and switch to my tech abilities and lay back and steal the enemies shields or go invisible and sneak around the battlefield and snipe them. You can play your way and its a ton of fun! The story line is not the strongest but I believe that it is like the original Mass Effect where it is not the best but it is building to something bigger and better to come. Expand

The combat is ton of ton with the added mobility and new cover system, which I think is really convenient and easy to figure out. There's a ton of diversity in play styles you can do because of the different profiles, abilities, and weapons.

The new squad really grew on me throughout the story, especially with their interesting loyalty missions. It was hard for this game to match the original trilogy's squad members, and while I think Garrus and Wrex ultimately are still better overall, these new faces do shine and I hope to see them more in future games.

I do have a lot of minor complaints with the game such as dialogue getting cut off by SAM telling you to mine for minerals, the facial animations are a little rough but don't ruin the experience like some want you to believe. There are a ton of filler fetch quests that take you all over the map. Ignoring these is definitely possible, and there are actually quite a few interesting side quests that add to the overall story and give added lore to the new alien races, all of which are really interesting. I just wish there were a few more new alien races.

If you're a fan of mass effect, I say get this game. If you like open world games with a cool story, interesting characters, and fun combat, then definitely get this game. Bioware did a great job here, and while there are a few things that could be improved, this game is living up to my high expectations.

Andromeda is it's own spin-off of the Mass Effect series, though it does share the title of 'Mass Effect' it's taking place away from the actual lore of the game, do you see any Mass Effect Relays in Andromeda? How about the fact the canon ending to the series destroys all of them in the first place, but I digress.

Andromeda is a great game, something I've waited for but deliberately avoided the bad press and negativity surrounding it knowing that the dislike of a game that not everyone has yet to play can be quite hurtful to both the games sales and it's chances at a Sequel. Not saying one review will matter but people should know.

When playing there will be some issues with Animations, but as I played through they became less and less noticeable as I grew more and more interested into the lore and the story given to you. 65 hours spent so far and I already started a new game + Just to experience new ways of playing and how to properly use the Profile system based on what's going on.

The shooting aspect is quite fun, similar to other third person games for sure, even if the cover system can be somewhat annoying at times and it frees up a button or key depending on your system.

The story is where the game truly shines, though some say it's awful and the like the story is a slow start, after all you just arrived in an unknown galaxy where you've only ever seen it through scans and pictures. Within moments of landing on your first planet, Eos, you find yourself surrounded by a irradiated wasteland of a planet. A bit droll but as you progress the planet becomes much, much more alive.

To keep this as spoiler free as possible, when it comes down to it, form your own opinion of the game by playing it, only you can know if you're going to enjoy a game. It has problems sure, but I rarely ran into any during my play through and I had 100% completion. Perhaps it's a console thing but on PC I didn't see much of anything that was show to the masses.

8 out of 10 for it's story and it's ability to keep me going, plus finally seeing a female Turian for an entire game and being able to romance her as Sara Ryder? Talk about a different experience than the Asari choices from before.

Play it how you want to play it, that's how it's designed, enjoy the game and don't let others ruin it for you.

It has it's shortcomings, But it is still a fun game to play and so far i enjoy it. There are vast areas to explore, quite a bit of humour, the colonisation aspect of it looks really interesting.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Should have called it Mess Defect: Gays in Space.

    The Good:

    - The combat is fairly decent and should have been the core of the game instead of travel cutscene simulator.
    - Space Sudoku - fun diversion, should have been used more.
    - Overarching story idea and intricacy - the actual idea of the story is fairly decent, and quests branching off gives the illusion of a less linear game.

    The Bad:

    - Pretty much everything else
    - Particularly the character writing that has been clearly pieced together by a social justice whining millennial.

    The Ugly:

    - All female characters who have more than 2 lines.
    - There are significant animation problems, but they are a lesser concern when placed next to bigger problems such as the pathetic writing, and terrible game design decisions.
    - Female Ryder is particularly shambolic, do yourself a favour and play as Male Ryder, who is generally alright.

Expect to spend your time in this game as follows:

25% - tabbed out reading websites while the game plods through travel cutscenes as a result of the most abhorrent game design decision this side of the year 2000.
10% - spamming spacebar to bypass as much of the torrid writing as quickly as possible.
5% - right clicking things then left clicking them while in space
5% - jumping on stuff and pressing buttons
    5% - combat
10% - driving around in your car and ignoring anything that isnt a forward station or a quest marker as it is irrelevant.
5% - navigating the worst UI/Menu system known to mankind.
    1% - playing Space Sudoku
4% - Being forced to unnecessarily run from area to area to hand in quests.
10% - running around speaking to NPCs over and over as the quest marker system is broken and it is the only way to be sure you have picked everything up/handed it in.
5% - opening terminals and either pressing spacebar or marking everything as read.
    10% - Scanning things
0% - Pursuing romance options as the characters are either all gay or have been hit repeatedly by the fugly stick.
5% - trying to work out how to create a white custom character, realising that you actually cant, and then giving up and using one of the defaults.

In Bioware games, your team are always an important feature, as well as what they wish to do with their private parts, here is who you get to carry through the course of the game on your ship:

"Active" Team (the characters who go on missions)

    - SAM - Asexual disembodied robot who lives in your head.
    - Peebee - chubby bisexual Asari with the mental acuity and behaviour of a petulant teenager.
    - Cora - Human female biotic, has a lesbian haircut but appears to be straight. Behaves like a 16 year old girl who likes to pretend they are grown up.
    - Liam - Straight guy (but here's the twist, hes black, because gotta have the minority factor). Likes to make stupid decisions and is all about morale.
    - Jaal - Beta male pink vagina shaped space alien who is all about the feels, is straight despite his favourite colour.
    - Drack - Krogan who doesnt give a damn about much of anything as far as I can tell.
    - Vetra - Female bisexual Garrus, except only about 10% as interesting/entertaining.

"Inactive" Team (they live on your ship)

    - Suvi - Lesbian Religious Scottish Scientist/Navigator/Something - Kallo - Straight male Salarian pilot, he gets the least lines and involvement in the story. - Lexi - Asari doctor, spurns your advances due to not being fugly. Bisexual - Gil - Chief engineer and king of the gays. In summary - do yourself a favour and don't inflict this game on yourself, unless you are into staring at your computer while nothing happens, or pursuing badly written gay imaginary space aliens.

I've never played a Mass Effect game before, and seeing as how Andromeda was said to be very distant sequel that has almost nothing to do with the original series, I thought it might be a good place to start. Apparently, I was wrong. Andromeda is a terrible game that falls flat in almost all areas. One of these would be the story. One of the biggest praises I see about the original trilogyI've never played a Mass Effect game before, and seeing as how Andromeda was said to be very distant sequel that has almost nothing to do with the original series, I thought it might be a good place to start. Apparently, I was wrong. Andromeda is a terrible game that falls flat in almost all areas. One of these would be the story. One of the biggest praises I see about the original trilogy is that it the games have incredible stories, while Andromeda's feels like it was thrown together last minute. None of the characters managed to interest me for extended periods of time, and most of them were really generic, bland, lifeless beings with nothing special about them. This is especially conveyed through the game's facial animations, that I won't talk about because you don't need me to tell you about it. It also didn't help that the characters were voiced by some of the most talentless people in the industry, not including Natalie Dormer and Kumail Nanjiani. However, a lot of games have been able to push aside a flawed story with incredible gameplay. So has Andromeda done that? Well, no, not really. The combat is extremely dull and not very fleshed out, and fighting the same enemies over and over again didn't make it better. Also, for some reason, BioWare decided that it would be a glorious idea to make the game open world. This didn't help the game, either, and actually hurt it in some aspects. For starters, the poor world design, in terms of structure and layout or the map, was repeated constantly on every planet I came across. I barely saw a change in an overall world, and the fact that the maps were very limited in where you could go when the game was advertised to be all about the freedom of the player really crippled my experience with the game. Traversing this travesty of a game map is also a pain in the ass, as the Nomad can barely go up a slightly steep hill without you having to switch into 6 wheel mode, and the customisation is way too limited and unimagined. But enough about the main game, let's discuss the multiplayer. It's not good. On a technical level, I'd compare it to Assassin's Creed Unity levels of functionality. Matchmaking is almost instantaneous, but there are constant song bugs and frame drops that seemed to happen every match, at least in my experience. In addition to that, there's only two game modes, neither of which are worth your time. Also, because it's published by EA, the multiplayer is loaded with microtransactions. The only good thing I could say about this game is that the customisation in the single player, in terms of armour and weapons, is pretty spot on, but nothing else besides that. In conclusion, Mass Effect Andromeda is the most boring, monotonous and overall awful AAA game I've played since The Division. Please don't buy this game, and please, BioWare, stop trying to be SJWs and make an enjoyable game. Expand

This is the worst Bioware game so far and the worst disappointment of this year. This is not what I was waiting for. I wanted a game with a decent story, good dialogues, good characters - nothing is in the game!! Not sure if I will continue playing this or make a refund.

OMG Bioware, what did you do?? Why did you ruin one of the best Sci-Fi series I've ever played?
    - The story is just awful and badly written.
    - The characters are not likeable.
    - Too many bugs and technical issues.
    - The animations look broken.
The game does not look like a great blockbuster any more, not it is like a mediocre Unisoft open world game. Shame on you!
    Made a refund.

Worst animations ever seen in a vid game. Not only that all female characters were 'uglyfied' just to please freaking feminism, also all human characters have dead eyes, dead emotions, bad textures, bad animation in walking running or whatever.Even without the endless bugs and glitches everywhere it would be horrible because of the characters behavior that kill every joyable aspect of the game.

I'm done. The original and genuinely inspiring promise of possibilities set up early in the game is constantly undermined by sub-par writing, the clueless VA, the baffling antiquated UI, awful space exploration, inexcusable glitches, and a lack of soul. Worst of all, it is boring. The tragedy here is that there was some real artistic talent and good work on display buried at the bottom of this pile. The Mass Effect echoes I liked about this game early on slowly and steadily got beaten down by the reality of what it was, and for a game that took that long and cost that much money, it boggles the mind. For reference, this game is a mechanical (and in many ways narrative) rip off of dragon age: inquisition. They even took the font. Cora is Cassandra, Peebee is Sera, etc.

But the reason this is a piece of **** game is because of how much it just rapes the best part of Mass Effect, which was (emphasis on *was*) detailed and carefully written characters and plots. Most of the time, I didn't know if I was playing mass effect or reading tumblr. Every **** strong character is a woman. This game definitely doesn't deserve the groundswell of negative attention it's received recently– negative attention it's worth mentioning definitely originated with the kinds of trolls who like to talk about "ess jay doubleyous" like they're the gravest, most widespread threat to America in the world today.

It's not an amazing masterwork of a game, let me be clear. But I think that my enjoyment of it is related to the fact that I actually replayed the trilogy before Andromeda came out, and so my rose-tinted glasses for the originals were freshly snatched from my face. Andromeda may suffer from sidequests that feel irrelevant to the action, but three weeks ago, playing ME1, I got to experience the conclusions of fights that I'd have to try five times on Insanity giving me a box of text and a couple thousand credits– so hey.

I still love the trilogy in spite of the fact that the writing can be awkward, the plotting weirdly paced, and the payoff to quests sometimes lackluster. Those games sparkle for me, and after I spent some time with Andromeda and got through the bland introductory segments, I found where this game shines too.

Anyways, here's a list of my pros and cons, but not in that order.

    CONS:
Facial animations. Undeniable. It's not as bad as a lot of people like to make it out, but it's still pretty glaring. Fortunately, the painful tends to come in short moments, the rest of the time faces just look a bit bland and awkward.

Sidequest creep: I play a lot of open world games, but honestly I prefer a tightly focused narrative experience offering choices to the player. ME:A overwhelms you with things you can do, but probably don't want to spend the time on, and it's difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff.

The protagonist: Ryder feels like a weird amalgamation of audience stand-in and their own person, its just that that person is really bland most of the time. Sometimes, there are great moments, most of the time the game's heart has to rest on the other characters.

Scanning and crafting: I'm tired of scanning and crafting. I don't want any more games that make me scan and craft. Here, it's especially bad, though.

    PROS:
Combat: Feels great, plays great, strikes a balance between fun and hard. I doubted that I'd like the replacement of classes with swappable "profiles," but in the end I loved being able to build my own ability sets and play with a newfound freedom. New mobility and weapon variety only improves it all.

Characters: I was worried when none of the characters seemed very interesting or believable at the beginning of the game. I'm glad that I stayed with it, because for me the squadmates were what provided the real heart of this game, giving me more to invest in than the main story offered. Except Peebee. I just have to tolerate her being around.

Exploration: While I don't like the creeping, numerous sidequests which aren't relevant to much of anything, or the mechanics that exist solely as boxes to be checked, the game is built around a single theme- exploration, and ultimately I think they made the right choice. The story feels strongest when the game sends you into the unknown, away from the ground of evil armies and vanished precursors where the originals already tread.

Sometimes it just doesn't all work together, but more often the game sucked me in for hours, wanting to experience more.

Like the writers and developers were so desperate to establish the characters with these over-the-top personalities that they just come off as cliché. I suppose if you try hard enough you can squeeze any character into a stereo-type, but this is kind of ridiculous. Liam is a badly written/acted Guy Ritchie character (yeah, Liam, I get it. You're "edgy"...) and Peebee is just "that obnoxiously quirky one" (yeah Peebee, I get it, you're the upbeat plucky one with a "can do" attitude that doesn't take no for an answer...). Hopefully the character development will improve as the story progresses, but here in the beginning it's not particularly engaging. The combat is good, probably the best of any ME game I've ever played. The story-telling has its hits and misses, but can be overshadowed by the weird animations and character models. I can look past these things and enjoy the game, I suppose, but I can't recommend anyone shell out $60 for this unless you can't find anything else you'd rather spend your money on. If you do, hopefully you can look past the flaws in the character presentation and graphical issues. The scenery is gorgeous and there is the potential for some great non-Reaper related storytelling that takes place in the ME universe here. Expand

Gone are the characters like Garrus, Wrex, Mordin, and Tali, which really made you want to explore and enrich your relationships with them. They've been replaced with what are arguably some of the worst party members ever put into a game. Sure, Drack is okay, but I've yet to feel anything like my experience in the first three games. This game may be huge and pretty open-world, but the vast empty areas with nothing but enemy spawn points, and the huge amount of fetch quests, and others which don't contribute to, or push you forward in the main quest line make it feel very much like the Hinterlands in Dragon Age Inquisition. Navigating the Galaxy Map is also a huge issue for me. It doesn't sound like much, but if you're a completionist like I am, the fifteen second animations between planets really add up and become wearisome. There are a few quests that I have truly enjoyed, but overall, I wish I hadn't purchased this game. Add to these issues all the bugs and performance issues- it really does not seem optimized at all-and you've got something I really haven't enjoyed so far. The combat is really the only greatly improved thing I've encountered so far, but that isn't nearly enough to make up for the rest of it. I'm only about twenty-twenty five hours in, so maybe something later on will help, like the ending of Dragon Age 2, but for now, I think a six is the highest I can give it.

For me, Andromeda simply isn't worth it, however. Not because of the graphics, because they are actually pretty damn good. Note I said 'graphics', not 'animations' - two different things. The animations DO suck. They're actually hilariously bad, considering this is a AAA game, and evidence of yet another title rushed out the door by a studio evidently pressured by EA to do so.

But the animation isn't the killer for me. No, it's a really, really poor narrative which plays out as 14-year-old girl Mass Effect fan fiction, combined with the overwhelming feeling of sheer boredom in the tired, stale and hugely dated game mechanics.

Cover is automatic, but the placement of objects you can hide behind is the real crime - they are hap hazard and often don't contextually make sense. The third-person shooting is generic and dull - functional but tiresome. The obvious and totally unnecessary padding in the search for resources to craft items is terrible game design and should never have made it past QA.

And the cherry on the cake; frequent frame drops. Because a AAA game with smooth performance is apparently too much to ask these days.

It has its' moments and the scenery is jaw-dropping at times, but every time it hits a high note, it balances it out with either a sensationally low one or simply sustained sessions of tedium.

There's a reason I only played four hours before writing this review, and that's because I simply didn't want to play any more of it. When a game makes you feel that way, it's game over at that point.

Thank everything for the used games market - this is going to a new 'lucky' owner shortly!

Great graphics (minus some sluggish animations), awesome story, more engaging combat than previous ME (I played all of them several times). I am a big fan of ME, so expectations were fairly high. Personally I would give it an 9, animations aren't great, but are tolerable. You cannot judge the game just for graphics, especially an RPG game like ME. I mean, Minecarft should get zeroes for graphics too then, right?

So i am giving it a 10 just to offset those like zero-kiddies who foam so much about how the animations are bad.

I am a huge fan of Mass Effect series and I absolutely loved the previous parts, all of them. I decided not read on any reviews to make my own opinion.
Character creation process was really bad, all presets look awfull and customisation is bad, especially all hair options were terrible for my taste ... not a good start but whatever.

The color palete in first few maps was off on most characters, everything seemed so bleak to me, white turians why? What is worst everyone who I was talking to looked weird and unbeliavable. There was absolutely no emotion even in the most dramatic scenes, no sadnes, no fear, no joy. How would you talk if your father just died, like this?
But I am willing to play ansi graphics games if they are fun so actually this made me sad but didnt put me off completely and I decided to play the game anyway. After 40 hour of complete boredom and anoyence I put it off. Every single quest that I did didnt interest me. Many of them dont make any sense. I dont remember a single quest I liked.
The only NPC I remeber is peebee which I find anoying. As a completionist I tried to talk to everyone to find all quests which in this game equals ask every single colonist why did he decide to travel to Andromeda. It made me start skipping conversation, There is so much meaningless talk in this game... 90% time listen to poor voice acting, 10% game actually do something ...
The UI is absolute mess. You cant effectively find next side quests, you cant manage your weapon and armor mods, it looks like this is some restriction due to console ports or I dont see why they wold do such terribly clumsy UI. My best mod disapeared because I got more then 50 items without warning .... but to be honest I didnt care a bit about equipment, there was no equipment for my spec. I played biotic in 40 hours of gameplay I didnt get a single biotic gear upgrade and on normal dificulty there was no chalanging fight. All Biotic abilities have such long cooldown you are gonna shoot most of the time anyway.
Multiplayer is the same as in ME3. What I hate is that everyone has mics on by default and you cant mute them! After hearing heavy breathing and keyboard mashing in all my games and then someone farting all game I just couldnt bear it and quit playing it too, The same problem was in dragon age but they still think its good idea to turn everyones mic on. Why for gods sake!?
Dont buy this game, its really my worst of worst gameplay experience :-(

I'm giving this a score of 10 rather than 8.5-9 points that i think it really is to offset some of the trolls still apparently butthurt over ME3 ending. If you let Garrus win the shooting contest on the Citadel, you'll like this too. Enjoy the ride, yo!

We are hearing multiple posts about things not at all related to the game with 0 score. You can tell people keep going through and like those posts to reinforce the opinion. Yet among the positive reviews you see some depth of opinion and it keeps ticking up.

This is a solid story with a lot of content and a lot of potential for future installments. The characters are new and haven't had 3 games to be introduced to us. The combot is awesome, the environments are mind blowing.

The facial animation can be bad but not all the time. And while there are some glitches (there's still glitches in ME1,2&3 so who cares.

Experience the game. Get past Eos and the pace skyrockets. The loyalty missions offer some truly remarkable stories about your companions. I wasn't a huge Liam fan at first but he has some funny and deep moments. Drack is Garrus on steroids.

Reviewers are writing second opinion pieces because as they played more they loved it. Just like the original ME1 there is kinks and things to work out. The story offers so many fantastic choices and opportunities. I can see Bioware taking the good (and there is a lot of good) from this game and doing what it did with ME2 and making it even greater which will than have you look back on MEA in a new light.

Over hyped expectations met glitches to cause a bit of a **** out the gate, but give the game a chance it won't disappoint. Play with an open mind and enjoy.

However, if you're a newcomer to the series, I probably would recommend you start with the original trilogy first. This game kind of assumes you'll be familiar with them anyway in the sense that it gets you used to the combat for which it offers relatively few tutorials or other information.

TLDR: If you've played Mass Effect before, you'll enjoy this one. If you haven't, start with the original trilogy, but you won't be doing yourself a disservice starting here either.

I had told my roommates repeatedlt that I was gonna play this game non-stop. I barely play an hour a day. Mass Effect 1 had a better time getting the aliens to look completely different from each other. They could have done so much with this game, and they fell flat. I am a die-hard Mass Effect fan and all I get from my devotion was a piece of **** that plays worse than Dragon Age Inquisition.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Right out of the front gate, Andromeda has one glaring issue: the character generator. It's disgustingly limited, and all of the starting templates are as unattractive as they can possibly be, which makes the limitations that much more infuriating. Dragon Age Inquisition had the option to not only change the shape of the eyes, nose, and mouth, but it also gave you a "sculpting" option that made it very easy to customize the character. Andromeda has none of that, limiting you to being able to change the "size" of the eyes, nose, and mouth, but not the shape. This means you have to pick whichever ugly template is the least ugly and try to work with it to make it attractive, which is a chore to say the least.

The next problem comes in with writing and character development. Halfway through the game I had a realization that left a bad taste in my mouth. I didn't give a crap about any of the characters except for Alec Ryder, Jaal, and Vetra. I didn't even care about Ryder. And this comes down to terrible writing. The characters are, for the most part, cardboard. Vetra and Jaal were the only members of your team that were even remotely relatable, and even that fell short because the dialogue for almost all of the characters is cringy at best, and straight up awful at worst. And that terrible dialogue carries into the romances, making them either too brief or unbearably cheesy.

The next major problem Andromeda has is the tedious nature of the game. Everything from the conversations with your crew to the side quests and the gathering are teeth-grindly tedious. In Bioware's other games, I would look forward to chatting with my crew, but in Andromeda, the dialogue problems and the cardboard personalities make the conversations a chore. Speaking of chores, the side quests are nothing short of that. Every area of the game has very MMO-like side quests that have you running around the planets doing a bunch of random things for people that are, in no way, helpful to the story and feel like padding. It was almost as if Bioware shoved all of these quests in and said, "Here, load the game up with sidequests so that players will be so busy doing them that they won't notice how lazy we were with this game!" But the final and most annoying tedium comes in with exploring planets and gathering resources. When you enter a new system, there are several planets and anomalies you can find, which is fine. What ISN'T fine is how LONG it takes to approach the new system and the planets. Every time you click on a system or a planet, there is an unskippable sequence of your ship slowly (and I mean SLOWLY) approaching said planet or system. That makes something that should take a few minutes take up to half an hour.

I won't go into the graphical problems because everyone has hammered that in, but suffice it to say that all of those complaints are well-founded, along with several other major issues that make the game unplayable in certain places. Whole quest chains that cannot be done because you can't talk to the person who starts it. Parts of a quest that don't trigger properly and make the quest unbeatable. Then there's the dialogue issues where dialogue just doesn't play. If this were a low-budget game, these issues may be excusable, but this game cost 40 million dollars to make, so there is NO excuse.

Now to what the game did right: the combat and the Alec Ryder story. As many problems as the game has, I can't deny that it's a freaking blast to play. The combat is smooth, the customization of the powers is great, and the boss battles are some of best I've ever seen. They are just challenging enough to be fun and leave you satisfied when you finally win. The only gripe I have is the fact that you can only have 3 abilities active at a time, which limits how much you're able to take advantage of the customization. This is only a small problem, however.

Now on to Alec Ryder. In this player's humble opinion, HE should have been the main character. His story about trying to save his wife's life is, perhaps, one of the most interesting things about the game, and he is one of the only truly three-dimensional characters. A whole game could have been made around Alec traveling the galaxy trying like hell to find what he needs to save his wife. It wouldn't have been anything HUGE like destroying the Reapers, but it would have been a relatable story, especially with how human Alec feels in comparison to the cardboard characters in Andromeda.

All in all, I'd give this game a 4/10 because SOME things did work, but the few things that do work do NOT make up for the severe shortcomings of the rest of the game.

TL;DR - Try this game for yourself before listening to the negativity, but wait a couple months before buying.

My honest score would be an 8.5, but the amount of hate people are giving this game without giving it an honest try is going to deter people who may actually love it. Launch day user reviews for a 100+ hour game simply cannot be accurate. I've played about 40 hours of this

I've played about 40 hours of this game now, and I'm addicted! The worlds get more impressive as you go and the environment art is stellar. Yes, the facial animations seem jarring at first, but I haven't noticed them in about 20 hours now. I've been too preoccupied jump-jetting around massive worlds, picking off baddies with the impressive (and deep) combat system, and gliding on ice in the Nomad. This game isn't without bugs, but it's nothing we haven't all seen in other games. And many will be patched in the coming months, hence my advice to wait before buying. I'm not a very sentimental person, but there was a moment I was wandering around the Nexus (Citadel 2.0) after completing a story mission, and I nearly teared up at the overwhelming feeling that I was back in the Mass Effect universe. They catch that unique vibe that made the original games so great, you just have to endure a few hours of rushed dialogue and exposition first. But the good stuff is in there, I promise! You will find the space hamster again if you look hard enough!

The multiplayer is very similar to ME3, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I've loved using the APEX HQ app at work, and returning to the game at night to a bundle of goodies waiting in campaign mode.

The hatred for this game is more about jumping on the "hate train", and little to do with the games own merits. You will find that the majority of negative reviews focus mainly on 3 issues; the animations, bugs and lacklustre story.

While this instalment of the series certainly does suffer from these issues, the game is still hardly deserving of such ridiculously low scores. Especially

While this instalment of the series certainly does suffer from these issues, the game is still hardly deserving of such ridiculously low scores. Especially since this game has been improved upon in many other areas. The combat, game size, graphical fidelity, sound and weapon/armour modifications, have all improved.

But none of that seems to matter because the "faces are weird"........ so it deserves a "1". Give me a break. There are so many games released with bugs and bad animations; this game is not the first, and certainly won't be the last. And I'm not saying that this should be an acceptable practice; only that ME;A is getting crucified for it when so many other games, of the same calibre or less, get a "pass" of a 5, 6 or even higher of a rating. This should tell you that these are nothing more than "hate train" reviews.

Yes, this game is lacking in areas, but all games do, albeit some more than others. There are even design choices they've made in the game I had wished they'd done differently. However, overall, I find it fun and engrossing, despite it's flaws and short-comings.

In my opinion, ME;A is far from a masterpiece, but also far from a terrible game.

It might be the biggest, most complex and action packed game in the franchise, but Mass Effect: Andromeda is also the least convincing one. The dated facial animations, the inconsistent writing quality and the regularly occurring bugs take you out of the experience too often. On top of that, BioWare has not used the concept of a whole new universe to its full potential, which often makes it feel like Mass Effect: Andromeda has not left our Milky Way at all.
