This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Picked this game up solely for the story campaign and I'm glad I did so! I went through it completely solo and still had a good time. Graphics are beautiful and environments are enjoyable the first time around. They did phenomenally well for this story especially seeing as how it could be screwed up so easy the characters and voice actors did great and similar to the movies. There's no need for major grind if all you want to do is the main story campaign which I recommend every marvel fan do the game play can be repetitive at times but it could've been way worse. I appreciate the occasional twist as well. I love marvel so this may not be for everyone at full retail price but when a sale hits or just borrow from a friend to have a great time with friends or solo with the avengers we've grown to love just for the main campaign and i dont believe you'll be dissatisfied Expand

You get your favorite superheroes from the original Marvel's Avengers and maybe people are being a bit generous with this however the repetitiveness of story missions and progression is just boring and the in game currency is laughable and yeah there are microtransactions for cosmetic items. Multiplayer and Story seem fun but after 20 hours there's no much more to do maybe some DLC down the line?

I make games for fun I have been doing so since I was 8, and there is something about creating a living breathing world there is something about exploring, there is something about living in them which is great. This capitalistic garbage is just that, garbage, what pains me is because games are by there very nature such a team driven medium with every single person contributing its impossible to just make a product, I can feel talent but in. It seems high budget but it is clear no one cared about this, and no amount of money in the world can stop that. The campaign has got an interesting story and good voice performances. Had the studios simply focused their efforts on making this a linear single player experience with a better fleshed out combat system, this game could've been on par with the likes of Insomniac's Spider-Man and Batman Arkham quadrilogy. But instead they decided to go for a half baked, unfinished cashgrab live service game that needed at least another year's worth of development.

Too much effort put into grind mechanics means the game looses the Avengers potential. It is not a nameless dude from Diablo or Path of Exile here - the characters are epic and recognizable among players. The campaign is actually pretty decent - felt a lot like Spiderman, but the game was made for playing with friends; and sadly this is where the game fails massively imo.

The campaign is not co-op, there are a select few missions where you can have a friend playing; but mostly you are forced to play it SP - but that fits with the missions I suppose. Still disappointing nonetheless.

The game initially shines in MP - the Avengers initiative allows you to buddy up with three other players, AI filling up any free slots (unless you match make) and it works pretty well. SADLY, when you hit level 130 on your character - the game becomes a needless grind-fest, and you will quickly find resources to upgrade are getting scarce and upgrade costs become a joke!

Sadly, the game gets stale really really fast - there are only so many times you can attack the same objectives, on the same maps, getting hardly any loot; before you really have to question whether this is a good use of your time!

What started as a pretty decent game, is slowly but surly losing replay value for me.

Gameplay is hit and mostly miss with a very linear style, and it tries very hard to push the 'loot crate gaas cosmetics' bs down your throat from the beginning right to its end....but if like me you're here for the story I recommend dropping the difficulty to easy and b lining it for the main quests otherwise expect to watch the hulk have to hit a normal human being multiple times before they go down(it feels so weird to watch!). Took me about 4-6 hrs to complete it this way and I had fun. Certainly not as terrible as some of the reviews here make out, but it is a disappointing title when you sit it next to the finest of the generation (ie spider man and batman!). If you are a comic fan that wants the feel of playing as hulk or cap. or ironman then get it. If you are interested in the game but not for sure wait a few months see how the free dlc drops are and get it on sale.

Overview: Image Destiny 2 except instead of shooting things you are now punching things. With an engaging however, short story and lots to do after the game and free dlc updates there is enough to keep people coming back. The game is not without faults though. The repetitive missions and god tier grind fest this game might keep people away more then bring them in. Hopefully as dlc is added, once per month, there will be new enemy types and unique locations to visit. I feel that is the plan but they didn't add enough in the beginning.

Good: The combat is extremely fun. I actually feel I am these great marvel characters. Each character feels unique and different from each other. Marvel's Avengers is a game where it gets more difficult the higher "power" you are. It requires you master a characters abilities and combos to get rid of enemies as quick as possible. Story is really engaging and fun but the whole campaign last around 9 to 12 hours.

Bad: It is ungodly repetitive there are around 10 different types of locations and only around 4 different AIM locations. Usually you are dropped in an open area with some discoverable to find then go into an AIM facility and are then seeing the same walls and same hallways over and over again. There are only 2 end game boss fights that you take one that follow the same style except you fight them on a helicopter pad or in an open room. Bugs are an issue although there are not many game breaking bugs and they are aggressively patching them. Loot is invisible they should have found a way to not have it invisible but some characters have odd loot you equip like the hulk who equips body parts?

Microtransactions: I felt it was important to point this out as its own section. Yes there are microtransactions in the game. They are for emotes or skins. There is a battle pass for each character in the game however the first 6 are free. You also get plenty of currency by completing characters daily and weekly missions. I think there is a little but over 7,000 credits {Paid currency} to get from the 6 characters. All DLC will be free. I am personally not upset with microtransactions as long as all dlc is free. I understand how some are upset but in order to continue this game past the 16-22 additions of content they need to make money off of it. Also you can also get skins though randomly found patterns in game tho these are rare to find and I have only found around 10 in 40+ hours of play.

And what drives me insane is the pure greed of this £54 title, not only do you have to pay for the game there are pay walls on cosmetics in game currency to get better gear to which I think is rather appalling considering the game isn't really that expansive in terms of level design and gear sets. What sets this game apart from other looter games is that the combat is really fun it does lose some of its charm as the game progresses but none the less fun.
If I was to buy the game again I would wait for a price from to about £30 I think that is the most I would pay if I had waited.

I am giving it an 8 out of 10 due to the great single player campaign. It's multiplayer is still better than anthem. It's not as bad as people say, it's really pretty good, just needs a little more polish. I don't like games as a service by The Division 2 I love so it's growing on me. If they would've marketed the single player more it would've had a better score. I would rent it first.

I really did enjoy the campaign and I liked that they made Ms. Marvel the main character here. But everything else just really doesnt click with me. If you can find this in the 20 dollar range to play it for the campaign I might recommend it. But, unless they make wholesale changes to alot of the always online mechanics, then this game will never get any better then it currently. Also the microtransactions can go to hell. Expand

Hi, my experience with avengers is poor.
Lots of bugy mechanics, not much to do after campaign. Its worst then Marvel Future Fight and that is a free mobile game.
Don’t understand why they went in this direction with Marvel title.
I was hoping it is going to be a lots of fun, though that turned out to be a lot of... frustration! Hope they will change some of the mechanics and abilities- boring!

Where do I even begin with the new “Marvel’s Avengers” game? I remember being very excited for this when it was first announced back in 2017 (at the time, it was known as the “Square Enix Avengers Project”), as it came at a time when Marvel made it known that they wanted to work with trusted developers to make games based on their properties (like Insomniac Games with “Spider-Man”). So,Where do I even begin with the new “Marvel’s Avengers” game? I remember being very excited for this when it was first announced back in 2017 (at the time, it was known as the “Square Enix Avengers Project”), as it came at a time when Marvel made it known that they wanted to work with trusted developers to make games based on their properties (like Insomniac Games with “Spider-Man”). So, when I heard Crystal Dynamics was working on this, I thought “well, these guys have had a lot of success with the ‘Tomb Raider’ reboots, so I bet they’ll do great with ‘Avengers!’” And even with the mixed early reception, I continued to hope the game would defy the odds and blow us out of the water. And this is why I don’t get my hopes up anymore because, when I do, they tend to get crushed. Case in point, “Marvel’s Avengers.”
In terms of the few positives, the game’s writing is solid. The story isn’t the greatest thing ever, but I liked the characters (especially Kamala Khan) and I felt like the voice acting was solid enough. Also, I thought the game’s concepts had some potential early on. I immediately took note of each Avengers’ “quirk” and felt that would be a good point for them to build off of, and it got me excited for the rest of the game.
However, the game becomes a crashing bore once it throws you into the “we’re clearly trying to rip off ‘Destiny’ or ‘Anthem’” world where the mission structure feels so lackluster. While the game is more cinematic and story-driven than such game, the mission structure reeks of the “live service” titles it’s clearly trying to emulate, and it almost feels like a blatant attempt to rope you into the multiplayer. While playing the game, I kept feeling like the campaign worked in service to the multiplayer, but not the other way around, and that’s a shame because, if they focused on a single-player experience, this would’ve been much better. But instead, the game structurally fell flat, as did the combat. While I liked each hero having their own “quirk,” the combat got stale incredibly fast, and it felt like each Avengers’ “quirk” was utilized as well as it could’ve been. Also, wow, this game runs horribly. The frame rate is absolutely atrocious with numerous bad dips, and the glitches...oh man, the glitches. I had more than a few times getting locked out of missions because the game glitched or something (I even got locked out of one of the final boss fights in the game because of glitches), and it just felt like the game lacked any form of polish.
Yeah, “Marvel’s Avengers” is a soul-crushing disappointment. I wanted to love the game, but Crystal Dynamics really dropped the ball on this one. If the team had focused their efforts on crafting a great single-player experience, this game could’ve been a worthwhile adventure, but instead, it just doesn’t stick the landing. I genuinely can’t recommend it to anyone, though if you‘re feeling that curious...just watch a walkthrough online. You'll have saved your money, and you'll walk away from it with the assurance that you really aren't missing all that much.

The skill tree and gear finding (not purchasing) is a pain. The good parts are reliving some of the iconic and signature moves of our heroes. I mean who wouldn't like to wield Mjolnir? They got IronMan bang on, Tony stark not so much. The "jokes" seemed forced.! The mechanics are also not user friendly. Map pointers, sprinting, auto-aiming, the things which a gamer needs to be seamless, just suck. You would not lose much if you just saw the walkthrough on youtube. My verdict: Do not buy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphic Performance - for release, not bad. Was able to complete the entire Campaign with little to no graphics issues, the odd black screen here and there, as long as I wasn't connected to another live player. As soon as a second, third, or fourth player joined Graphics would begin to lag as well as overall server connectivity. LG NanoCell 4K UHD HDR 49" Smart TV, with Xbox One X, and a proper high speed HDMI cable meant for high performance 4k.

Content - Severely lacking. Campaign leaves a bunch of unfinished quest lines, unacknowledged dialog(at the end of one of Widow's "SIDE" quests, Pym tells her to talk to someone in the Science bay, but there is no one in the Science bay she can talk to, nor can you even at that point of the game, go to the Science bay as widow). The Campaign is labeled as a Single Player mode and yet every quest, mission, and dropzone is a multiplayer online mission. Finishing the Campaign isn't finishing the Campaign, cause Avenger's Initative, which is supposed to be their Multiplayer, is actually Campaign Part 2. And there is a lack in end-game content. You get 2 weekly and 2 daily missions per Hero that takes like 2 hours to complete. With 6 individual "Character Passes" that shows a "Free" line, which means they are more than likely going to be adding individual paid lines to each pass in the future.

Multiplayer Connectivity - Can sit for 2 hours or 2 minutes hoping that someone is going to be able to connect to you is also about to start the same mission as you. When people do connect to your lobby, there are no obvious hosts, so randoms can come in, start your lobby and leave; making it so you now either have to close your game or go through the 5 minutes of loading just to quit the mission and start the process all over again, and thats assuming that mission you wanted to do in the first place is still there, because War Table resets and Vendor Item Resets don't follow their server time resets in any pattern.

Bugs - tons of exploitable bugs easily found without people noticing, I.E. Thors Particle Vaporization. Combining Thor's Innate Shock and pushback Crits, with Pym Particle Shrink Crit and increased Damage can quite literally cause enemies to shrink, while thor is using his brute strength to push enemies into walls, through the map and get vaporized in the nothingness, and thats assuming there isn't anything under you otherwise they'll get stuck under the map unable to die, making you have to reset the mission. Very common to also achieve while using ODINFORCE and PINNING ENEMIES TAKE PYM DAMAGE when you throw your hammer, enemies will go flying through the air, shrink, and fall right through the map as the hammer will land on the ground pushing them right through.

Day 4 of owning Starts at 12:02am 15/09/2020, Thor level 50 PL 135 and Rising, Everyone else is at least 25 and at least PL of 50. Except Cap, cause he's a useless enhanced human.

While there's a lot to like, the whole thing has a rushed and unpolished feel to it. I love the story of the campaign, all the voice actors did a fine job and the cutscenes looked really good. But it still feels like there are levels and scenes missing. It was nice to frame the story around Ms. Marvel and introduce her to people who haven't read her comics, but even with her front and center, I feel like they didn't show enough of her life before her journey begins. You're also not given a lot of time to breathe between missions and a lot of them end very abruptly. It shocks me because Square Enix has been so good at this with their Tomb Raider games, but Avengers feels like a cheaper unfinished knockoff despite its massive IP.

I would say the singleplayer took a generous 8 hours to complete, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone else beats it in 6 hours or less. Only about half of those missions feel necessary and thoughtfully composed with cinematic moments, while the others feel like storyless missions you'd play in multiplayer. That honestly really disappoints me because I remember articles stating it would take 18-20 hours to complete.

I will continue and try the multiplayer because I did enjoy leveling up my favorite characters. The combat is definitely repetitive, but I do like the fight animations, learning new moves, and stringing everything together against multiple enemy-types at once. It's not particularly deep gameplay, but all I really expected was an Ultimate Alliance style game except with a Spider-Man/ Arkham series aesthetic. My only major disappointment with the gameplay is that playing Hulk is a completely miserable experience. I could feel a difference and even some advantages with each hero, while Hulk just feels like an unsatisfying and ineffective button-mash. Black Widow doesn't even have powers but I feel like I kill things twice as fast with her.

I do have fun playing it because I love the Marvel Universe so much. All the easter eggs were really cool and I always enjoy seeing new interpretations of the characters. But if I view this game objectively, it's definitely mediocre at best and downright bad in some places. I encountered a lot of framerate issues and glitches that made me restart the game several times. I get that this happens with a lot of triple-A games at release, but it feels more jarring in a game where the content is pretty barebones. I'll probably max out Black Widow, Cap, and Thor because they're my favorite to play as, but after that, I'll set the game down until more characters and stories are added.

This game has its moments, the beginning of the story is charming and stirs up hype on what being a super hero is all about and makes you want to jump in as one of the main avengers the game launches with, and then it falls flat. The Avengers Initiative is supposed to be your standard online looter shooter; run in, beat up the bad guys, do a tedious meaningless task or two, get your gear, leave, rinse and repeat. As someone who plays warframe and played it at launch I genuinely enjoy these types of games BUT! The types of missions available are repetitive and stale after a couple of hours of playing. Stages are reused and don't allow for some of the Avengers to shine with their specific abilities, the objective has been recycled from other types of games (use warframe as an example) When in playing as Thor or Iron Man you're able to do really cool abilities but you're objective is to heat up a reactor or server? No cool animations for heroes with actual powers just punching and kicking at a random object. The enemies range in types and can flood you at certain points making you feel smothered and not so super hero esque. Although there is a multitude of enemy types they are literally only robots. The only humans enemies you engage with are in the beginning of the game and a few other types that teleport or fly. Other than that you're fighting robots the entire game. This game needs a huge overhaul fast before they lose the hype. Matchmaking is abysmal and you end up playing with AI because you're tired of waiting for the Avengers to assemble. The gear you collect doesn't have any physical appearance and really doesn't give you an incentive to keep replaying missions which is the entire point of a looter shooter games as a service game. Each hero has its own season pass type set up that you can either grind for by daily and weekly missions or just pay for (surprise) right now after playing since the day after it's launch I haven't unlocked one item for a hero in the free season pass. Grinding different hero's seems like a chore at this point and doing so will make the game feel more stale. Others have said it best, if you want to be an Avenger with friends buy it. If you want to feel like your doing meaningless tasks as a super hero in an unfinished game for mediocre rewards at a premium price this is for you. If the developers were holding out for next gen they should've done just that. I want to like this game and hopefully with the poor reviews and the fan feedback they'll update the game to play and feel like I am actually a super hero until then it's just not that enjoyable for long periods of time. But after you reach the Campaign there's nothing left. The multiplayer function simply serves no purpose as there are a limited amount of options left following the end of the campaign.

This game is still very buggy. Yes, it's mostly just funny visual glitches. But, sometimes, your allied AI will get stuck in the ground. Sometimes, your multiplayer partners will somehow launch themselves through an invisible wall.

This game should be global. It should feel global. This is the Avengers. Most of the maps are American focused with two outside. One being in Scandnavia, and the other being in Siberia. So, that's a bit disappointing.

No option to kick people out of your parties during multiplayer meetups. So, you always end up having to leave your strike team in order to get the party you want should you want to change things up.

It's by no means a bad game. But a $60 game? Not at this state. $30 sounds better with everything this game seemingly lacks.

As a lifelong Marvel fan, I desperately wanted to love this game. I found the early previews alarming but still purchased it on the strength of a review by a streamer I trust. Having finished the single-player campaign, I can say with confidence that this game is a mess.

The good: the characters play and feel like they ought to. There is no PVP mode forcing character balance, and that's

There is no PVP mode forcing character balance, and that's a good thing. It also avoids the pitfall of using heroes' powers as add-ons, instead of making them the base gameplay. Sadly, that's the end of the good points.

The bad: the story is based on the flimsiest of premises. It also relies heavily on Ms. Marvel, a character I didn't care for before, but after playing this game, have grown to really despise. Her power set is derivative and her backstory appears to be some Marvel writer/editor's self-insert dream. The supervillains, regular enemies, and stage backdrops are extremely limited, 3-5 of each. The loot system is not compelling in any way. It uses the standard white-green-blue-purple-orange color system to denote rarity, but none of that seems to make much difference. There are no cool cantrips or bonuses, and no buffs on the loot seem to do anything. The multiplayer matchmaking is awful, and for a game that is built around playing with other people to accomplish objectives, that alone is killer. The load times are also some of the worst in recent memory, rivaling Horizon: Zero Dawn for most time spent not playing.

The ugly: So, so many bugs. Others have said this game should have stayed in development for another 1-2 months. That's being nice. They should have taken at least six months to polish this up. So many graphical bugs, disappearing loot, rolled back microtransactions, game-breaking gameplay bugs...you name it, Avengers has a bug for it. For a game to have had such a big beta test, it is astounding that it was allowed to release. It's bad enough that going forward, I would never pre-order a SquareEnix/Crystal Dynamics game. Yes, it's bad enough to be that drastic.

Further ugliness: microtransactions. I might get some hate for this, but I'm ok with microtransactions as long as they are done right. I have 1200+ hours sunk in Marvel Heroes and spent heavily on that game. Even more so for games like Marvel Future Fight. But even I couldn't justify spending real money on what Avengers has on offer. $14 for a single skin, and of course you can't just buy $14 in currency, you have to buy $20. The skins are unimpressive for the most part. There's also a lot of 'garbage' items for sale like emotes (have yet to see one used) and nameplates for your online profile. There are skins and the like available for 'free', as long as you grind through a character's "character card". Unfortunately, many bugs revolve around undoing card progress, so good luck with that.

Overall, the game has some appeal for big Marvel fans like myself, but the many limitations, missteps, and severe lack of polish cast an inescapable pall over the proceedings. There are is a lot of potential here, and future updates could pave the way to a really enjoyable Marvel experience. I just can't recommend it in its current state. As this game is supposed to be a 'games as a service' platform, maybe they should have just released it for free. Regardless, wait for a severe price drop if you are curious, or at least wait until you see that patches have addressed the bulk of the dozens upon dozens of bugs.

Really wasn't expecting to like this as much as I do. Story is cool, combat fun, looks and sounds incredible. But at the end of the day it's a live service game. You're either into these or your not. And you don't have to purchase micrograms actions, atleast I never do.

Way to many bugs!!!! Game Mechanics for me were a little hard to master. I feel everything could have been better. Especially when you're paying clothes $100

When I play a title with a franchise behind it? I generally want to play as those characters? What I DON'T want is to play as some goofy character I've never heard of because the REAL heroes of the franchise have slacked off. Then this new nobody to the franchise character suddenly is the key to everything? YAY to the producer or whoever thought of doing this for WHATEVER the stupid reason? Expand

Boring, generic game filled with micro transactions. Avoid at all costs, don't waste your money.

The game play is somewhat fun but the thing that is a big letdown is the lack of equipment customization you character doesn't show any changes instead they pull and anthem were you can just buy a skin that is just a lazy way to do thing, also after a while it is just repetitive if you are a fan this is for you but if not well there are probably better options out there or coming soon.

this game is like made for kids, feel like playing extended part of Future Fight :v. Tons of hilarious non-sense details in this game. In addition, the cut scenes in this game are also really excessive, i feel that they are just trying to make this game more cinematic and hilarious but they have totally failed, all those short scenes are useless and not fun. Last but not least, about the graphic, it is not good but not too bad, although it will definitely lose comparing to other expensive games. To conclude, this game does not worth the price and time we have to spend on and it is only for its fans( i mean crazy Marvel's fans). Expand

It could’ve been a great single player title. The publisher chose to go down the game as a service path though, and those who prefer to play solo need to tackle run-of-the-mill co-op missions. The multiplayer on the other hand is messy, chaotic and in the long run boring. When the developers manage to fix the most pressing bugs and find a way to bring more variety to co-op, this might become a solid game. Right now, I can only recommend it to the biggest fans of the Avengers. [11/2020, p.26]

This is the perfect example of "Games as a Service" done right. Marvel's Avengers offers up a superb campaign story to play through that is promised to be expanded on in the future. The gameplay may be repetitive, but it includes just enough to keep players interested and invested in the endgame content that is available now to keep this game going until the next step in its roadmap. The possibilities and potential in the future here are hugely exciting.

There have been plenty of moments during my time with Marvel's Avengers where I’ve genuinely had a great time. But this game keeps finding ways to drag itself down- at times it almost feels like it goes out of its way to do so. There’s just so much here that I can’t overlook, no matter how hard I may try. An unnecessary and broken loot system, a litany of horrible technical issues, uninspired and one-note mission design, and a story that fails just as much as it succeeds- it doesn’t matter how mindlessly fun the combat is, it isn't enough to overcome such a heavy list of problems.
