Very good game, But I only gave it a 5, because its too damn short, and after that its just a grind fest. Many disconnection issues, not on users side. dont believe the 10's, they are fanboys reviews, mine might be low and severe, but a game like Destiny could of been so much more. instead bungie deciced to make a decent shooter, with some rpg elements into the mix.

The hype machine was strong with this one but unfortunately the game failed to live up to the hype. This review is based purely on single-player and PvE experience as I have yet to delve into the PvP content.

The main problem with Destiny stems from the basic pitfall which arises in almost any genre--it's repetitive, to a fault. Everything from the story to the gameplay to the music feels as if it has been done a million times before and that's because it has. This isn't necessarily a bad quality. Games like Diablo or WoW or even most MOBA games relish in their repetitiveness. The formula for these games is to hold a constant carrot-on-a-stick for the players to entice them to keep playing and keep advancing their characters. Destiny attempts to accomplish the same thing but misses out on much of the charm of the aforementioned games.

To begin with, the story feels rather uninspired and souless. Characters are not compelling and, while the history of the universe seems interesting and unique, seldom is the player actually made to care for it. To compound this problem, the plot is a standard "save the world" storyline and does little to deviate or revise upon that narrative. For Bungie, a company which is known for their elaborate and fascinating narratives, Destiny is huge step backwards.

The core gameplay itself is very solid, though not entirely innoative. Progression feels very fluid and natural. Players are given missions (similar to quests in games like WoW or Diablo), most of which are unlocked in subsequent order, in which they partake to earn rewards and experience. Again, the repetitive factor must be taken into account, as variation and innovation in mission design is stale and uninspired. The challenge to take down many mobs or even elite mobs seems the same with little variety thrown in. Most elite mobs wield extremely powerful weapons which force players to take cover every few seconds. This results in long and often tedious encounters and while there are technically three separate classes, their abilities and play styles all result in the same basic tactics--shoot until you are hit and then take cover to regen your shield. Rinse and repeat ad nauseum until the mob(s) is/are dead.

This boring play style is made even worse by the fact that the three classes are not separated by any unique play styles as should be expected from any game with multiple classes. This is where the real failure of Destiny lies. A game like Borderlands, for all of its faults, manages to accomplish the task of creating unique player classes. A gunzerker could run and gun and rely on life steal/extreme toughness to survive. An assassin could go stealth to get out of combat or into a more advantageous position. With Destiny, none of these options are viable. The only viable strategy is to take some pot shots and then take cover. To this end, Destiny is a failure of game design.

Still, the feeling of an open world, MMO environment makes up for some of the pitfalls. Groups in Destiny are known as Fireteams and can consist of up to four separate players. Players won't have trouble finding groups, even random ones, to team up and take on missions. This may be the one factor that saves Destiny from being one of the biggest blunders in video games history, as the game is greatly enhanced when playing with other people.

The other thing of note is the graphics, which are among the best of the next-gen consoles. Unfortunately, the same can not be said about the art direction, as most maps and missions take place in dilapidated or destroyed environments and buildings. Still, the graphical output is fantastic to look at and brings the production qualities of the game up a notch.

At the end of the day, Destiny is a mediocre product which offers little in the way of innovation. It has serviceable gameplay and a solid multiplayer atmosphere. Outside of these things, it's a lesser Borderlands (and for the record, I don't even think Borderlands is that great of a game either).

PROS: Great graphics, solid core gameplay, fluid character progression, strong music, strong multiplayer experience.

CONS: Extremely Repetitive, redundant combat tactics, limited options, classes feel unimportant, bland environments.

It's always a bad sign when most of the scores are a battle between, "Arghhhh, game suxxors! All who enjoy must die!(0)", and "OMG, Only my opinion counts, the rest are trolls! Trools and Haters alll! Wheeee dis is da bomb awesome! Yay!(10)"......

Which is exactly why I went in with a bit of hopefulness this morning, but only expecting mediocrity really, and that's exactly what I got.

Which is exactly why I went in with a bit of hopefulness this morning, but only expecting mediocrity really, and that's exactly what I got.

Unfortunately, many of the negatives have called it, even if the "0" is a bit much. Repetitive, stale feeling FPS, with questionable multiplayer design (mainly chat), shallow story, and unimaginative game play that at times subjects the player to all of the "fun" of a MMO grind fest without really being a MMO.

To be fair, if you're one of those people that just loves playing the same level of Halo over and over, you'll probably get your money's worth, but if you're looking for something much more than that, you'll likely not find it in Destiny. Yet another over hyped, but under delivered attempt at "Redefining gaming for the next gen."

I'm giving it a 5. It's not awful. It's just meh. Rent or play a friend's before forking up your own money. A definite gamble on mediocrity.

I'm reviewing purely from what I expected which was a balanced competitive multiplayer, a singleplayer with fun and innovative gameplay, and a good story. Unfortunately destiny was very lackluster when it came to these things. First the multiplayer is too casual for any kind of competitive person. It doesn't take too much skill and it was clearly designed for the casual gamer. Next the gameplay to me felt stale. It was like call of duty at 30 FPS with space gun sound effects. Next the story is gripping at all. During the cutscenes nothing was really gripping and for even some of them I'd get up and eat a snack while the characters who I don't even know or care about are talking about something else I don't care about .The worst part was the repetitiveness of the missions. About every mission is go press X and let your ghost scan something while you shoot about 3 waves of enemies. It does that about 15 times in the campaign.

The game tries to be a little bit of everything. It has FPS elements, MMO elements, and other things but in the end it isn't enough to satisfy.

There is no true single-player experience, with other players always being in the same "zone" as you. Unfortunately, PVP is horribly unbalanced at this time, with certain weapons being one shot kills and others seeming acting as squirt guns. I feel that I am very lenient with a 5, maybe I am hoping that later part of the game will be better since I just finished the demo part (earth + 1 mission on the moon). The game is pretty boring so far especially with that soothing Peter Dinklage voice (put some emotions and do your GoT accent, man). The storyline is really not that gripping: I don't really feel like saving the world, II feel that I am very lenient with a 5, maybe I am hoping that later part of the game will be better since I just finished the demo part (earth + 1 mission on the moon). The storyline is really not that gripping: I don't really feel like saving the world, I don't really feel connected to it. And honestly, Bungie should done a better ripping of Borderlands: more loot and freaking scopes on guns, seriously f*** iron sights. And the whole social/mmo part of the game... yea that probably sounded nice on paper. On the note of PVP, if you plan on doing PVP, do not play as a hunter, the stupid golden gun is just underpowered when you have a titan or warlock doing their AoE type of super attack, it's like bringing a gun to a nuke fight. Waiting for the critics to post their review, they probably are all afraid to say this multi-million $ game is crap because it was so overhyped initially. Expand

I was excited for this game, but overal the controls are slow, and are not too great. No Singleplayer offline is a silly approach. The Grinding aspect of this game, and "Dungeon" running theme just doesn't go well with what this game has to offer. Borderlands would be a much more Rational choice if you wanted an experience that is overall refined.

The fact that it is so small, each "planet" about the size of three or four CoD MP maps strung together, would almost work in its favor if there were more to do in those tiny worlds -- but there's not. Whether you're playing through the story or farting around alone or with friends, you're going to be doing the same things in the same places in a matter of hours, the repetition setting in and growing until, around three days in, you just can't stand it anymore.

Social game, Bungie warned the reviewers. No one could possible review this game (threatening implication implied) until playing it for a week, and any site that does is "suspect!" Despite the fact that they've been reviewing games MUCH bigger, much more complex and rewarding, than Destiny for over a decade, Bungie strong-armed the press into keeping stum about the inadequacies of Destiny. And judging from user feedback (like mine, and my friends') delaying those reviews probably worked a treat for Activision/Blizzard's bottom line, because none of us would have bought this if we'd read what we all know now. Sure, some seem to love it. But just as many feel it's a cynical, under-delivery on the hyperbole that was this game's marketing campaign.

And it's a shame, because there is real talent here. If some work had been put into story, some effort into marking what competitors, from MMOs to RPGs, have been establishing as genre-standards for size of worlds and complexity of habitation. Hell, if you could simply bloody talk to the other gamers about! So much opportunity. Did Bungie think they were mixing a cocktail so potent they didn't need to meet those standard expectations? We may never know.

One thing I do know is I'll never pre-order a game again. Never. If the publishers want to play games with reviews, want to rig the game, then I'll happily wait a few weeks and see if their wares are worth buying. Especially if it's got Activision on its label.

Just a different art style and you have random people roaming about the individual levels that may or may not help you. Yay.

The entire game environment feels lifeless: landscapes are large, but 85% of it is not accessible due to invisible barriers and the environment is just for show - i.e. things aren't interactive and are just there to create a sense of a large world. (Side note: be prepared to see a lot of the same models being used over and over again, ranging from the exact same weapons that require you to be a higher level, to entire rooms being 'copied and pasted' over into a new location).

Character customization is also something lackluster. You can only change the face, skin tone, eye color, and hair for your character. While there are three different races to choose from, you are still left wanting more out of Destiny's character creation.

PvP is this game's strong point, easily. It plays similar to Halo in that regard, but for a game that focuses mostly on completing missions, this game lacks depth.

I give it a 5 out of 10 because the shooting part is solid. But then again, isn't it the same as they did back in 2001? I fear that Destiny represents that BUNGiE can't move past their previous saga. From the developers of Halo, here's a shooter that "plays it safe".

This game was marketed as an MMORPG/shooter. There really is no RPG side to this. Yes, you can pick different classes, but there is really no difference in the classes. Another issue is that many of the articles about this game state that it could take week to beat the story mode, when in reality it takes a few short hours. There was supposed to be dozens of worlds to visit for the story, but that is not the case.

If you are looking for a "game changer" you are out of luck. The gaming industry has not game out with anything original since the PS1. The last time games were challenging was back in the SNES days.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I dont normally write negative reviews because no one whos made up their minds reads them anyway but i felt compelled to do so with Destiny.

On the surface after a few hours gameplay it appears to be groundbreaking and original it dazzles you with a whirlwind adventure backed up by the most polished graphics yet to appear on a console.

Unfortunately this is all an illusion, what Destiny is, is very simple, a combination of tried and tested systems from various games wrapped up polished and put together in a package that stuns and dazes you into believing its something its not.

All that said its not any of those things that lead me to write this review, infact until level 20 i was very happy with the game, its at this point i should mention im a going on 10 year wow veteran and once i reached level 20 i found my situation very very very familiar.

Weekly raids, daily heroics, rep to grind, marks to earn, epics to buy from vendors and a never ending stream of earlier content revamped for a higher level in which to gain said rep and marks.

To go into specifics about what i disliked about it would take longer than the 5000 words im limited to but to list a few, to get beyond level 20 you require gear with +light on it to earn gear with +light on it you have to do level 22 dungeons because only level 18+ rares and legendarys have light on them and level 20 dungeons only reward you with level 17 gear.

The rep grinds are insanely long, after 18 hours of leveling to 20 all the time working for the faction you start as i hadnt gained level 1 rep with them and there are 3 levels required to be able to buy guns from them for which you still have to earn the currency to purchase.

The currency system is flawed and overestimates how patient and committed console gamers are 3 marks per level 22 dungeon with a max of 100 marks per week with every gun costing 150 marks so your looking at 34 runs a week at 40 minutes minimum each just to reach your cap.

Now i have 12 level 90s on wow and i cant stand earning my valor max on half of them each week in all honesty, but from my own personal stand point this is a key flaw in the game.

Some have said the story is poorly written personally i find it entertaining if not amazing it reminds you very much of Halo and doesnt really shake the feeling of being a borderlands + halo hybrid all the way through the game.

What the game does well are things that have been done well before, tried and tested combat from Halo and Borderlands, RPG features familiar to any WoW or Rift player and if you personally have the time to invest 24 ish hours each week earning your marks and getting your gear and have no issues with the daily repeatable quests of WoW or Defiance etc then you'd probably enjoy Destiny for what it is.

A incredibly overhyped fantastically polished grind fest which is a mash up of 3 of the most successful games series of our era.

    The Good:

The game has some awesome graphics and fps mechanics. It really shines in this regard because at times it's awesome - really awesome.

There's a good chunk of content although very disjointed and uneven.

The UI is excellent - the art work, design, etc. very fluid. It speaks volumes and it sure looks like a lot of effort went into this. Although it's a little incomplete in some areas - it still excels here.

    The Bad:

The story is mediocre to non-existent. The PVP is imbalanced and lacking polish you would come to expect from FPS Veterans like Bungie.

There's not enough variety, locations, and the worlds simply aren't big enough to be considered an "MMO" and very repetitive and bland to be considered a top-shelf FPS. A great FPS Titanfall comes to mind in which the planets (maps) you visit all seem alive full of life (NPCs, creatures, etc.) - Destiny lacks that.

    The Ugly:

The game is too repetitive - there simply better co-op games and loot driven games for the ps4 right now - diablo comes to mind.

The boss fights are overly simplistic and they are mostly rehash with different models for the most part.

There is nothing special or varied about this game and most of the tasks become mundane and repetitive to a point where playing further can seem punishing.

    In Conclusion:

Bugnie has made a very pretty, albeit empty world. I found myself wanting to know more about the enemy, more about my hero, and just more in general. It felt like playing a glorified beta in which everything I tested worked fine, but in the end I wanted my $60.00 back. There are free to play games such as Warframe, and paid games such as Diablo 3 that offer more replay-ability and more content - as well as better co-op.

I think they set themselves up for failure being too ambitious they would have been better off doing a full blown Sci-fi story Halo clone. They could have implemented a great single player experience with their current map selection and offered a robust multiplayer with many match types and scenarios - everything would be fine. Instead we're left with a shell of what could have been waiting for DLC/content that will most likely require some sort of fee which I would be ok with had I not paid so much for the initial admission.

I could go on for hours about other "mmo"-like games that are available free to play that offer just as much content and much more than what is "Destiny". For one Planet Side 2 is coming out very soon and I think that's one reason Sony hasn't released it yet because that game alone would put even more stress on this game - Destiny does not live up to the hype or standards set forth by other games.

The bad: It's empty, lifeless, stale, and lacking soul. It's narrative is non-existent. The missions are repetitive and dull. The co-op component is poorly conceived. Feels small and shallow for a game with such epic expectations.

The good: It's gorgeous. Combat is great. Soundtrack is awesome.

At least I got the last. I think Destiny is a disappointment. The planets are actually not that big, and there is absolutely no reason to explore them. There are a few hidden chests around each planet, but that's it. The missions you do on each planet is basically; follow the arrow on your radar to get from A to B, kill something and repeat. There is no point of discussing the story in this game, because there are none.
The controls are good and multiplayer (pvp) is fun, but that's it.
And whats the point of getting new spaceships when it's only for showing it on the loading screen?

    Plus:
    - Good controls
    - Multiplayer (pvp)

    Minus:
    - No story
    - No point of exploring, and the planets feels empty
    - Repeat, repeat, repeat

My first big issue is this game should be an MMO, Bungie why? This would be a 10 star review it was!!!

Another issue is enemy spawning. Kill a swarm of enemy's walk back a few spaces. Poof they have respawned.

If I had to guess I'd say the world is very bland and exploration is borderline boring. I would also say the AI is fairly dumbed down.. I don't know maybe Fallout and Skyrim has spoiled me, but it seems like Bungie just took Halo and added new characters, and like other reviewers have mentioned the story is lacking. I am sorry, but the fun factor is just not there for me. I am going to give this game a 5. It is fair and down the middle. This is accurate, as there is nothing "massive" about the world. The PvE content is highly repetitive, with your character's advancement dependent on repeating the same tasks ad nauseum with little or no reward. The PvP is likewise limited in scope, with only four game modes, and another variable game mode that changes occasionally. Furthermore, in order to play all 10 maps you need to cycle through these game modes as not all modes occur in all maps.

In all, this is not the game that was promised, not by a long shot. Even if the game improves significantly with the DLC and numerous confounding updates, there is no excuse for the lack of content at launch. I gave this game a 5 because that's what it is, half a game.

The game is beautiful with surpior shooting machinics, that's the positive side , The negative side was also pretty much the same all around - No story as if it was written by an alabaster retard, Its a grind only game, game has no soul and it needs huge improvements.

This game took halo, Gutted out the story, Killed Master Chief and gave us 3 Different Spartans. Now lets also remember this game has had 4 years, a budget of $500,000,000 and had an Alpha and a Beta along with a team 140 QA testers. So why the hell are there so many flaws?

Fan boys are in denial, overall it seemed that this was the summary " Destiny is game that looks like it had everything that was awesome and interesting ripped out of it and had been replaced with the same 4 enimes and bullet sponge bosses " now it wasn't all negative they all agree that the Crucible is a hell of a lot of fun and it was clearly made by bungie.

So with all that said and done I see it like this " Destiny is game that has been put in beautiful atmosphere and made to look shiny and exciting well not really offering anything in the way of a story, The Multilayer is flawless and I LOVE it, I spent more time grinding aimlessly against weak enemies for decent armor Instead of doing Strike missions and story missions that should have offered a lot more in terms of rewards,"

Now I know there's updates coming to fix everything wrong with it but these are things they should have picked up in the beta, The fun parts of the game are when you can work side by side with a friend and destroy a mini boss or just go around and piss off other players that are grinding an exploit. So overall I enjoyed the Multilayer and see that as there strength, there story is summed up in the game trailer, Grinding is only fun if you know your going to get something out of it, The space ship is just a loading screen and They need to offer more interactivity in the tower.

So my score for a game that is going to last 10 years I give it a 5/10 , and if there going to use that as an excuse then that's not good enough as it felt more like a $70 demo with multilayer. And with that I wont be playing it for a long while so then I'll know that the bugs have been fixed and the DLC is out.

I played the Beta and found that more fun, also I have spent 75 hrs playing, have a Lv 25 Warlock and a Lv15 Hunter So yes I did give this game a fair run.

The biggest drawback is the insane amount of grinding to get any of the good gear. Not only is it basically a grind feast but it is also a boring one. Every mission and strike blend together

The only hook I found within the game was building and leveling up my character that was very addictive. The vast open world was extraordinary and a pleasure to look at, yet when I was doing missions I was consistently doubling back on myself and revisiting the same terrain it made the game dull at times, and was often the same mission over and over again, with you just having to warn off hoards of enemies while your companion does something.

Don't get me wrong Destiny is an open world like no other and that meeting complete strangers (who I have to say were all very nice people and not like people in COD) was brilliant and the team work was great, you felt you were taking on the world and the sense of achievement when you completed a task with your new mates was brilliant!

As long as you put the time and effort into the game you may get what you want out of it. As far as I can tell Budgie have said they will be developing this world, this game over the next 10 years. 130 hours spent in the world of Destiny and I want to really love this game. It has so much potential and the pedigree is immense. The designs for the world, the characters, avatars,, everything is AAA. It looks amazing and I challenge anyone to stand on the moon and look up and not think that it is one of the most beautiful skies designed to date.

Additionally the gunplay and feel is fantastic. While feeling familiar, there are still enough nods to future tech to give new satisfying feelings (the Ice Breaker cool down is very cool). While some of the weapons feel under powered, and others a little overpowered, the gun element is nearly on par with the Battlefield series.

As I said, I really want to love this game. But it seems like Bungie want me to just walk away from this game and give up. For all the fun they bring with the gun play and the beauty they deliver with their world creation, they manage to undermine it all with repetitive gameplay, boring bounties, vendors selling weapons/gear well below your level, and a RNG that is so random it makes a monument to Abraham Lincoln's hunk of watermelon seem methodical.

    The Story

The story is just poor. Bungie do not want to hold the gamer's hand but this doesn't mean you can fore-go basic story telling elements. As a Guardian you are plopped into the middle of a massive war between light and dark, never once asking "What the hell is going on!!! Why is it several hundreds years after I was alive?!! What is all this?!!" Nope, you just seem to accept this crazy world and get on with murdering various races without questioning which side is actually good and bad. What makes the story worse is that you feel massive chunks have been torn out of the main arc - leaving gaping holes and many puzzled faces (I assume). The story is one of the biggest downsides, especially considering what Bungie did with the HALO series.

    PVE

The open world is at first a great experience. The patrols on the various planets allow you to explore and take part in the fun public events. The seamless interaction with friends (not randoms as it is impossible to speak to non fireteam members) needs to be applauded. The fact that you can join a friends game easily is a great addition. But once you have done the same missions/bounties for the nth time the PvE starts to get a little dull. Sure you have one raid to build up to, but you may find that this soon becomes a tedious task of farming for materials and xp, instead of a game of exploration and cooperation.

    PvP

Many have enjoyed the multiplayer element, and the crucible can be fun for people who enjoy arena style gaming. It is however weighed down by the lack of maps, rotation, and game modes. Additionally the use of supers in PvP has been an interesting addition allowing even poor players to have a moment of glory. However the four game modes are not that entertaining and the 6v6 feels a little old gen (but I know it is key to arena style MP). The PvP falls behind the likes of CoD and BF. The worst part of PvP appears to be the hit detection, which seems to lag behind. This coupled with a poor matchmaking system can make the PvP experience a frustrating one.

Overall the PvP is a weak feature, especially when you realize that map voting, or even map indication (which map is up next) is not available for the mode.

    Special Events

To date we have had 2 special events, the Queen's Wrath and the Iron Banner. Both had lukewarm receptions. Certainly neither event can be considered a success for player satisfaction or even for gameplay diversity. The Queen's Wrath had similar bounties and mission than the PvE and the Iron Banner was a failed attempt to 'make power count' and utilized only the control game mode.

    Bungie

One of the most disheartening parts of this game is Bungie itself. It seems that instead of fixing the issues of repetitive gameplay, maps, rng, and missed rewards for completed bounties/missions, they are instead fixing things that aren't actually issues (such as the game not being random enough for their liking). Every Friday you will get an update from the community manager, and every Friday you will sigh in disbelief at the latest issue they have 'fixed'.

    Wait and see

What may annoy you is the constant talk of how this is the vanilla platform of a massive MMO that will last a decade. if you are not willing to spend 60 euros on a game that is essentially just a vanilla platform then you should not even consider this game. the time you will have to invest, not to mention the money, may not align with what the game gives you.

    Overall

I want to love this game. I want the hours I have sunk into it to be meaningful. But I feel that Bungie are not sure where this title will go and the current content is repetitive and shallow. Wait until the new year and see what the new DLC brings. If that changes the game and adds diversity then this game will be worthwhile, otherwise invest in Halo and BF.

I'm giving this a 5 and that is largely on account of its solid FPS fundamentals and visual polish. This could be a good game in a couple years if they pulled it back and created a complete product. It fails on so many levels 5000 characters can't cover it. This game was suppose to be legendary, It was fun for about 2 hours, same thing over and over, and pvp is extremly dull, was very unsatisfied with the game traded it in and lost out on the seasons pass i bought for it! If you are 12-15 years old I might recommend this game but in my opinion it is a major epic fail.

The story is under-developed and doesn't explain any background. During the story missions, you MUST watch the complete cinematic regardless of how many times you have already completed the mission. Once you have completed the story missions and unlocked the Moon, Venus, and Mars, there is very little content to keep this game from becoming nothing more than a grind fest for better gear/weapons. Sure you could run some high level strikes from the Tiger playlist, but be warned, you'll probably get the same strike back to back. Since the loot rewards are random, you might have to spend several weeks to get an upgrade for a particular item slot. (I have 3 max level Titans and run the raid on normal and hard mode each week on all 3. That's 6 raids for the last 5 weeks, and I have yet to get an upgrade for the legs slot. This prevents my character from reaching light level 30.) Should you get lucky enough to randomly loot the item you wanted, check the perks/stats on it. Those are also random, and although it may be an upgrade to your light level, the item itself might have perks and stats on it that do not benefit your character or playing style at all. The developers are quick to patch certain aspects of the game that they feel needs a hotfix. IE: the Vex Mythoclast is an exotic weapon only attainable through the completion of the raid on hard mode (also random chance). This weapon was regarded as the best weapon in the game and absolutely carved it's reputation in the PVP battlegrounds. Within 2 weeks a hot fix nerfed the damage output of the weapon in both PVE and PVP. Now the best weapon in the game is the most useless weapon as it's damage is rivaled by any auto-rifle or pulse rifle. Apparently a patch was supposed to be introduced to increase the damage that the Mythoclast does in PVE, but it's been 2 weeks and yet no word of when the fix is going to be implemented. Here's the other catch, because it is classified as a Primary fusion rifle, the amount of ammo that can be carried is very limited, as most armor specifically grants extra ammo for a specific gun type or the weapon slot like Special and Heavy weapons. Not Primary weapon ammo. I know it just sounds like I am whining because I own a Mythoclast, but why spend the dozens of hours to earn a weapon that was initially designed to give the hardcore players an advantage in every aspect of the game? Now to vent a little on the PVP battlegrounds or Crucible as it's called in the game. Lag.... Lag... Lag. Other than that, it's rather fun and frustrating at the same time. The map playlist doesn't seem to cycle well. Expect to get the same map over and over if you play a certain game type for a while. The game types are the same as Call of Duty multiplayer, just with different names. Level advantages are disabled, so as a level 29, I can still get smoked by a level 5 if I'm not careful. The developers introduced a game mode called Iron Banner, where supposedly level advantages would impact game play. But then they decided to tone it down because it would be unfair to casual gamers. But I thought that's what Crucible was for. The last patch made the last boss in the raid harder to defeat. The developers would prefer random variables for that encounter, instead of deliberate coordination between the fireteam members. Thus changing the overall dynamic of that boss fight that we have all been accustomed to for the last 6 weeks. All in all, I personally feel like the game was under-developed at launch, and the developers are constantly tweaking the game play in a negative way. Their 10 year plan for Destiny, might not include many of their current players should the game and it's direction continue on this downward spiral. Expand

Destiny has great game play and music but lacks dramatically in almost every other aspect of the game. I'll though out story line, parts of the game ONLY available on the bungie website ( grimoire cards and create a clan) that should actually be in game, poor voice acting and a below average reward system. The game feels like a giant shiny brand new slot machine. Pure RNG doesn't make it seem riveting or fun. Even when you get an exotic armor or weapon you feel glad, but it simply wears off. With no loot pools or next to no confirmed drop rates, the loot feels 100% luck based and not rewarding at all. Not to mention the flaw in the raid, making it possible for people who don't know how to do a raid properly or even be geared for it, get the best current in game gun the Vex Mythoclast which is one of the only in game confirmed drops for completing the raid on hard.
One thing Destiny does good is the social experience. I have a lot of fun playing with others. Getting a group ready to run through the raid is a lot of fun. But even then, it gets dry fast.
My final verdict; don't buy this game hoping to be a triple A giant. Come into Destiny with low expectations and it may appeal to the consumer more.

It's a pretty large issue, but I see a lot for this game in the future. The actual game-play itself is some of the best I've played in it's genre. The PvP can be a little spastic and the super's can get annoying to fight against sometimes. But overall, everything plays very well. The PvE and RPG aspects of the game are what bring it down a bit. Boss's have entirely too much health, and there is hardly enough variety during the battle to make it interesting. And the fact that doing strikes is the most efficient way to acquire new gear is a little disappointing. But I'm still playing. And that's what solid game-play mechanics will do to players. The game in it's current state is unfinished, due to Activision's role. But I appreciate the way they are releasing content. It adds a new layer to immersion. If they gave you everything they had to offer at release, you'd play through it in a week or two and be done. That's not how events happen in the real world. It take's months, even years for wars to develop and end, not weeks. So by releasing certain content throughout the year, it adds an almost realistic approach to how the players will encounter the story. Destiny is an amazing FPS and an average RPG, for now. When the rest of the content is released, I believe that Destiny will finally live up to the hype it built.

Their are guns that are simple over powered and they are starting weapons which leaves players with the response "if you can't beat them join them".
The diversity in the weapons is great but again, it leaves the lower levels at a big disadvantage not being able to wield the high level weapons. If that is not enough for you, the perks; higher level players have, can leave low levels at the player mercy. Their is no skill base ranking system that you would expect from a Bungie game, which after 343's attempt at Halo 4, you would almost certainly expect their to be one.

The game is very pretty with interesting settings and a great musical score, but this all feels like wasted potential for a game that could have been SO MUCH BETTER! The multiplayer is alright, but not up to the standards of other multiplayer shooters. In the end destiny feels like a game that could have been so much better had it not been as linear and repetitive. IT IS SO REPETITIVE PLAYING THE GAME BECOMES A CHORE! As a side note I can't make a comment on Destiny's story because I had no idea what was going on, the game doesn't bother to explain it and just expects you to read a wiki of the internet. Because nothing says immersion like having to use google to work out what is going on in the game.

As an action driven space shooter it was entertaining to level up and kick some alien ass with a variety of weapons, but once you've done it all the game becomes a grind to level up your gear and max those numbers, farm some materials and await the magical and mysterious character that sells the top tier gear labelled as "Exotic" Unfortunately you'll find nothing exotic about the slim variety of top tier gear when you see that everyone has the exact same outfit and gun as you because they are simply the best.

What I think much of the backlash against this game comes from is not living up to the expectations it set us up with.

There is no massive open world, in fact the world is 5 small environments which you return to constantly with quite annoying loading screens between each and even to simply return to the central hub of your spaceship.

The story is very limited and leaves more questions than answers, apparently by design as what you've bought is simply "chapter 1" (and now chapter 2) of a much longer story that you'll pay for chapter by chapter in the form of expansions.

That being said the first expansion has addressed some issues by now but still leaves us in the dark with many previous loose ends addressed and even more questions.

IT IS NOT AN MMO. Perhaps at launch massive amounts of people played but the world only supports very small numbers of people at once, and don't expect to be able to chat with them unless you all choose to don your headsets and join the empty voice channel.

You have to make your own teams if you want to raid or do any higher level missions. This is the game breaker for me, I had to use a third party website, randomly send friend requests to strangers and fill my PSN account with people I don't know in order to do the most rewarding grinds.

There IS a matchmaking system for one type of mission but it isn't used on the things worth doing (Raids, daily missions, weekly missions).

Overall it was fun to play, got old fast and has left me with a sour taste in my mouth as I expected a chocolate layer cake and received a Hershey Kiss instead. It's not worth the price tag or the hassle but the dream of what it could have (SHOULD HAVE) been as I played through is why I'll give it even this high of a score.

Destiny really doesn't do much to keep the player invested besides the glimmer of hope that maybe the next time you do a task, you'll be rewarded with a prize that you might want (it's more likely you'll just deconstruct the loot and tell yourself there's always next time). Destiny had 10 year plan ahead of it, riding on the premise that you'll be doing the same exact boring mission countless times over for loot that you MIGHT get. Not to mention the level construction, especially as one of the selling points of the game was throwing around big name Game of Thrones actor, Peter Dinklage, who plays a glorified flying USB drive tasked with unlocking doors...and even when it's his only job, he's pathetically slow at it. Everywhere you go, door are locked and the only way to get through is to have little petey shoot his peewee laser at it for 10 minutes while you fight off hordes of enemies. Yes, nothing can get through the door, not your titan smash, not your nova bomb, and sure as heck not your sparkly golden gun, what did you think this was, the future?

There are things I like about this game, things I absolutely cannot stand about this game! It has left me on a very mixed path. But, let me try and sum up what makes this game great, and what makes it bad and I will let you decide whether you want the game or not.

So, first off the story is pretty much does not exist. You play through missions and almost ALL of the time they are just the same area as before, only with a different long term goal. I believe Mars made me goto the same area about three times for it's missions and it only altered my objective. You do two things in Destiny's main campaign missions, scan things. And fight of hordes of enemies until your little Ghost friend can scan something, or deactivate a laser grid or open a door.

    You have a choice between three classes, each having two sub classes. Hunters, which are your quick characters. Titan's which have defense/attack in mind {Depending on which sub class you pick} And Warlock's which are range and recovery based {As they have a pretty long melee range}

You also get to choose from three species, they don't alter the gameplay in anyway like most MMO's however. There are your robot EXO's, Humans and Awoken, which to be honest, are just human's colored blue with colorful eyes

The game's character customization may as well not be there, you have so little options that other MMO's like STO or even TESO dwarf the game's customization options, then again. They might not have cared to much for it, seeing as you only see your character's face in cut scenes or at the Tower.

The campaign is SO short, the only that keeps it so long is the fact you have to fight hundreds of the same enemies over and over again, and that the game barely gives you any check points. You sometimes have to fight three bosses or three large waves of enemies {All by yourself mind you, unless you bring a friend along} with one life. It does not matter if you die on the last wave with only three enemies left, you get sent right back to the beginning of wave one.

So anyways, there is more to the game than just the story however. You have your patrol missions Which is basically a free roam mode where you can run around doing quests and doing events that happen at random. You have your strikes, where you and your friends, or two randomly selected people. are thrown into a unique mission where you once again fight through hordes of enemies, defend an objective from three waves of enemies and then get to the boss and fight him.

You have your raid's, which are more unique than story missions or strikes. Where you actually have more than just survive three waves of enemies. My personal favorite is the Vault of Glass, where you basically go back in time to grab a relic to destroy a vex overlord, while you go back in time. Guardian's must stay on sync plate to keep the time gate open so you don't die, meanwhile three guardian's go back in time. On grabs the relic, while the other two shoot oracles that will instant kill you if you don't kill them fast enough.

Then there is crucible. Your basic PvP game type. You have your standard domination like game mode, your standard FFA game mode and your standard Team Death Match game mode. Now, crucible is sort of broken.

I once had a level 5, 11 and a level 13 on my team while the enemy had FOUR level 31's on their team! And I checked, no they were not in a party. Also, there have been a few times where I have seen people get the most rare weapons in the game {AKA Exotics} from literally being the worst on the team! My friend once got 4 kills, and 22 deaths and got the Suros Regime! And another time a player got 2 kills and 11 deaths and got the Hard Light! I have no clue why this happens! Does the game take pity on players who are having a bad day? In that case, I am going to start sucking on purpose in crucible so I get all the Exotics thanks!

The control's on the game are smooth, I like the flying mechanics and I like the way each class brings something new to the table, but that being said.

What is with Bungie games and not letting me turn off the auto aim!?! I hate it! There have been SO MANY times where I have went to punch someone, or went to shoot someone. And then someone jumps in front of me and all of a sudden my ridicule is aiming THEIR way now, and of course since that guy that jumped in front of me has full health, I don't kill him and then I get double teamed! There is NO way to turn this off and it makes me angry!

But not as angry as how much they are holding back from XBOX360/XBOX ONE users! They are litterally holding back weapons and armor and even a strike from us XBOX users! Bungie is trying to hurt Microsoft I swear, but it does not hurt them! It only hurts the fans!

Finally, after adding up all the DLC and the 70 dollar launch price, to buy all the DLC plus the game would cost OVER 200 dollars!

And you have to buy a DLC that costs 60 to get trading, ya they never added trading to the main game...

Gameplay is by far the best part of the game and earns 4 out of the 5 points I'm giving it. Graphics are pretty good, but nothing special. Bosses are a prime example of bullet sponges. Biggest dissapointment of 2014.

What detracts from the experience is, unfortunately, the core experience. The in-game storytelling is woefully inadequate, and leaves you just not caring about any of the characters or locations. The motivations of the different races is never flushed out, and you end up just running around shooting everything in sight and farting around looking for new skins. That's this game in a nut-shell. Yes Bungie tries to supplement and complete the gaping holes in the story with the online content, but frankly it is a distraction. You must leave the game to figure out what anything is. After a while this game become a dust collector. Once you level up each of the different classes all the way, through an ungodly amount of grinding and replaying mission, it has little to no purpose. This game become hollow and empty rather quickly; after about the first character class play through.

As I said before though, it's not a bad game! The gunplay and leveling up the different weapons and armors is a lot of fun! Playing with two of your other friends in a fire team is immensely satisfying! The other positive is that Bungie has A TON of DLC and additional content coming! A 10 year plan worth of goodies. That is a definite win.

Speaking of the DLC, it needs to improve a little. A lot of love and thought went into cool weapons and clothing options for the Dark below, but my god the additional missions were a joke. They were short, unfulfilling, and could be completed in less than an hour. Step up Bungie/Activision.

In short, a fun twitch shooter with lots of loot to collect, but lacks any real substance to keep you playing solo. Not a bad buy, just temper your expectations and have dedicated friends to play with. Wait until the price drops to around 20-30 dollars, and then get the DLC, you will feel like you got exactly what you paid for.

Although graphically it's Astonishing and the boss fights can be fun if repetitive, Destiny is lacking in content and becomes a boring repetitive First Person shooter with a flat story that adds nothing new to genre, ending in disappointment to those exited.

THE LOVE: Gorgeous graphics, a great ability tier that allows you to change your character to a different sub class as you progress and a decent stock of weapons that gain XP as you use them allowing you to unlock their varying features which are mostly unique to each weapon. I felt the controls were smooth and with the evolving ability system which increases your jump range, ability to glide and even teleport, the only limitations I found as far as movement were my own periodic inability to execute them. The story is decent but the overall experience feels like Halo clone more than a wholly unique experience. This is apparent in the first few seconds of the game when the Dinklage 2.0 appears and you get instant flashbacks to Guilty Spark. It’s a workable way to narrate through a story but I felt more drawn into Halo’s experience having Cortana’s voice whispering in my ear, full humour, emotion and depth as opposed to the monotone sound of Peter Dinklage’s voice. His voice acting is great and this is how the character was meant to be portrayed. But developers should take note that if a gamer will be forced to interact with a character throughout the entire experience, a little bit of depth and emotion goes a long way to make your companion a bit more palatable.
Now, The Hate: The hype for Destiny spanned back years. We knew it was coming, then delayed but we didn’t care because it just meant they needed more time to make it great. We read how this game was Bungie’s passion project and how it had been in the works for over a decade. An entire universe, ever expanding and evolving which would allow you to go anywhere you want. It was laid out as a game that seemed like it had the potential to never end. Never has something been so far from my expectations as I was stopped in my tracks after only a few months of intermittent game play with nothing left to do. I breezed through the levels and all the while hoped that maybe when I finished the current planet a new one would unlock, but it doesn’t. With only Earth, The Moon and Venus to explore at initially, and then much later on Mars, which are all pseudo open-world and quite small map wise when Bungie’s promises had us expecting something much more expansive is a major let down. At minimum I would expect to be able to explore our Solar System, but this is just a pipe dream. The addition of Mars took so long after I had finished the other 3 planets that I actually had to relearn the controls and try to remember what was happening in the story when I left it months earlier. Now, after completing Mars this game is collecting dust and I’m not sure I’ll care to wait for the next planet given how long it’s been, Destiny at this point is a distant memory. There’s a saying I have “Don’t just talk the talk…be the talk” and Bungie should take note of this. The lack of transparency with the lack of any offline function made me feel cheated as well. I read anything I could get my hand on related to Destiny before its release, never did I read “oh…and there’s no Offline play”. For many this probably won’t matter, but that’s because they live in a world where internet is integrated into their everyday life. I assure you this is not the case with many people. In my case I travel 6 months out of the year for work and take my games on the road with my Gaems Case. I remember the frustration I felt when I bought the game (the ultimate addition which was well over a $100) left for work and that evening put it in only to read “no network connection”. I get that this is supposed to be an MMO type experience, but to not even add a hoard mode like Halo had seems short-sighted. Unless you have internet this game is useless. Lastly, my biggest gripe is the inability to access 100% of the game as many areas require a Fire Team. The Vault of Glass for example. I’m a mostly solo gamer and up for a challenging grind. However you can’t even access the Vault without multiple players controlling these “plates”. The one time I did get in alone due to a glitch that has since been patched, I fought for hours alone and finally made it to the boss, after an epic battle and getting him down to 25% of his health, the network booted me out and I lost my progress. Restarted outside the vault and couldn’t get back in. If you don’t have friends on PSN who want to play the Raids you’re stuck trying to find strangers to help, and no one seems to want to play so while the game quickly leaves you with no storyline to continue until they update with the next planet (if ever) the inability to access parts of the game you haven’t played is a ridiculous tease that just makes me want my money back.

If Bungie can turn itself around and "Be the talk" I'd be happy to revisit this review.

There is no doubt in my mind that this game is addictive but to be honest the only reason I kept playing was because there was nothing else at the time of its release and all my friends were playing this. Mechanically, this game is one of the best first person shooters ive ever played and the visual/sound design were magnificent. But even the mechanics get dull when enemies feel exactly the same and main bosses require no strategy other than shooting it in the face a million times. Even the most beautiful scenery gets boring when i'm dropped into the exact same area and run through the exact same buildings to do the exact same mission. The initial 3-4 hours with this game are great but when you tear away at the layers you realise just how hollow it truly is. Taking a new character to the max level does add some re-playability to the game but the guns are still the same and eventually you realise the characters are just cosmetically different and their abilities are slight alterations of each other (seriously a warlock's nova bomb is essentially the same area of effect damage as a titan's fist of havoc). PvP is this games only redeeming factor but even that feels empty when compared to other games such as HALO, COD or battlefield which have better progression, more interesting maps and better game modes. The social aspect of this game isnt great because at any given time you are only part of a 3 or 6 man team plus poor or non-existent matchmaking completely ruins most of its limited content. It should never be considered as a MMO, not even close.

I really did want this game to be something special, and that is why it is such a disapointment, it was made by developers who created one of my all time favourite games but practices by them and the publishers have completely put me off any future developments. There are so many other games out now that give you so much more content for a fraction of the price of this game and all of its DLC. Opening the case for the first time and you're greeted with a card that tells you to buy the season pass for the next two expansions before you even touch the disc! This bring me back to the point its the 'most expensive game ever made', I cant help but feel that the majority of that money went on advertising and false promises instead of actually developing the game. Fair play to the advertising department they earned their paychecks with amount of hype they generated with their trailers. My advice is to never believe in the hype for a game and to wait for the 'game of the year' edition where you can buy the entire game and its DLC for the original price as its release day. Even then this game would be considered painfully average at best.

The boss battles were stale and didn't require you to strategize and exploit a weakness, it's quite literally just shoot at the head or torso area for the entire encounter. It got boring, very quickly. It felt as if I was playing another Call of Duty story mission, nothing new, nothing good. I expected everything and the only motive for playing was to acquire a specific rare item which I found to be VERY frustrating! The leveling system is crap, even after patches I still find it tedious to upgrade weapons and armor especially the most important weapons and armor. (ie. pre-HoW patch exotic weapons and gear) Furthermore, all gains regarding weapons and armor inevitably get nullified through future DLC's. Only a select few exotics are able to be carried through the cycle of the game. Whereas I can understand why legendary weapons get held back, I find it unnecessary for armor pieces to have no way of ascending. (post-TTK release) Finally, some weapons receive unnecessary nerfs or damage reductions such as the Auto Rifles (pre-TTK) and fusion rifles (post-DB yes they are still meh-ish). To summarize, if you are bored and want a new experience, destiny is NOT that game, at first it feels fun and refreshing but after awhile the game will is piss you off. Lastly, it is also worth mentioning they have an entertaining Multiplayer, player vs player mode. If you enjoy and are GOOD at PvP or Multiplayer then the game will buy you an extra few hours of enjoyment, however some of the weapons that dominate PvP are acquired through very lengthy grind sessions of story mode or campaign, and sometimes you may very well never get that sought after weapon because 99% of the game revolves around RNG. (items are completely randomly selected regardless of game performance and what level you are) Destiny is a love/hate experience, again, I do not recommend this game, Destiny is a carrot on the stick game and should be avoided. However, the content in this release of Destiny is laughable, and the fact that Bungie and Activision will try to justify this with a season pass is a very worrying aspect for future big releases. Horrendous voice acting by that one from Game of Thrones does not help this game's cause either, even he sounds bored.

This could have been an even lower score if the Vault of Glass wasn't so enjoyable, but the fact that you can't matchmake for it and MUST gather a group of 6 is quite bizarre. 5 is an average and disappointing score, for an average and disappointing game.

Shooting mechanics are clearly designed to keep players engaged instead of amused. Progression is level and loot based, with a dedication to mindless grinding for ugly looking items. The drop rate of engrams is inconsistent and more rewarding when you just **** around outside of missions and strikes.

So, poor story, poor characters, no universe building, the lore is not even in the game (which is an offense on itself) and the game was released empty, but with two announced Expansions packs. Anti-consumer, that's what this game is.

Don't play this game alone, or it will be a terrible experience. At least with friends you'll be a little amused through playing this exhausting grind fest.

since I went through the positive lets go through the negative.

-bullet sponge enemies, every boss has high health for the sake of high health. it becomes a chore to kill bosses.

-repetitive strikes are the core of the game. every strike is "go here, kill wait for the robot thing to open a door, fight boss that takes forever to kill because it has high health" every boss feels the same too. they all spawn other enemies and they all just sit there eating bullets.

-the worlds feel lifeless and dead. they could have put the whole thing on earth and no one would have known you touched another planet. no humans are seen other than the tower. I'm sure people would at least attempt to scavenge stuff from earth.

    - story is non-existent. it's like a bunch of random ideas put together into a "story". there is no character development and you will see what you would think are major characters and never see them again! it's insanely poor.

    - poor character dialog. Peter Dinkleage is a great voice actor but the horrible writing kills his performance.

-Crucible is just boring. crucible is the pvp mode, it's bad. how the people who made halo messed up pvp idk. everyone has a sniper or shotgun because green (special) ammo drops like candy. map design for the most part is poor. vehicles are annoying more than awesome like in halo. it's just sad this happened.

-no mini map to see where you are going, the game worlds aren't big but they are a maze so getting to a certain area can be hard.

overall. destiny isn't the innovative experience people wanted. it's just a bad borderlands rip off with a crap PVP mode tacked on I am glad to see critics actually giving it poor reviews and people alike.

Destiny proves that spending a large amount of money on pre game hype is worth every penny. This game is way over rated. Multiplayer is terrible, and the story mode is anything but fluent and interesting. Sorry fellow gamers, I don't see this game being relevant in 10 months, let alone 10 years.

This game is a massive disappointment. Every story mission follows the same pattern: fight through a horde of enemies, protect your ghost as it hacks something, fight a bullet sponge, and hope that the game gives you some piece of loot that isn't complete crap (which it almost never does). Also, the multiplayer is horribly imbalanced. Hunter and sunsinger warlock dominate every match, and the weapon and armor bonuses still being active in pvp makes it near impossible for a lower level person to win. The bounty system is bugged as well, giving bounties for playlists that are only available on weekends during weekdays. Add on numerous cutscenes that you can't skip, an absolutely atrocious story, fairly bad voice acting, boring choices of weapons, a lack of a community, and making it a real pain in the ass to get a group for weekly strikes, and you have a pretty awful game. If this game were $30 or $40 I would have a different opinion, but this game is absolutely not worth $60. Expand

The game lays a great foundation to expand upon in future DLC and has really great graphics for being a cross-platform game. I expecially enjoyed the MMO aspects of leveling the character as well as the weapons for the character.

Changed rating--was a 25 level Hunter and traded it in. simply tired of the endless repetitive missions, environs, etc...this, coupled with NO narrative story at all and a seriously broken rewards system, make this the most disappointing game of the year. Such promise...such amazing shooting mechanics....wasted...

Although Destiny isn't the brilliant start to a franchise that many had hoped for, it's a great game for those who can push through its flaws and enjoy the ride.

What is most amazing of all is that despite its litany of weird little problems, Destiny is fantastic, its combat up there with the very best, the thrilling rhythm of its battles still not fading the 30th time through, and it has no single systemic problem that is not fixable. [Dec 2014, p.106]

Destiny is a flawed but still extremely fun first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a way it adds to the game's addictiveness. [Oct 2014]
