EDIT: Essentially excellent with friends, bland without them. It could be so so much more but there's still nothing quite like it. Upgrading my rating from an 7 to 8.5. The gunplay it superb but too many other things are lacking.

If you can forgive the very uninspired art style and level design, graphics and gameplay are good but everything else is completely lacking. FFIV is a better MMO, Borderlines a better Co-Op game, and they're countless better SP and competitive MP FPS games out there. It feels as if Bungie was completely insecure in everything except the graphics and Halo-esq gameplay.

Being Bungie I expected an epic story but it's not. It's very bland with horrible voice acting. Word of advice to devs thinking of using very well-known actors with iconic TV/movie characters as voice actors in games is a good idea. It's not. When trying to create a new character don't use someone who constantly reminds me of someone else. All I hear is a completely bored Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister). (Same goes for you MGS - it sounds like the actors try and take the character seriously...but they can't)

Destiny tries to be several games in one but In the end Destiny is a pretty bad MMO, a horrible Single Player experience due to the bland story, level design and lack of set pieces or otherwise inspired graphics, and an average co-op game. Also, competitive MP can be had better elsewhere.

It tries to be the jack of all trades and excels at none. And given the content, level design, and scope of the game it hard to imagine that the majority of the 500 million budget went towards making the game and not to marketing.

The way I see it Destiny sells you 4 games for $70 (in Canada), but MMO's are free, the SP isn't worth anything, the CO-OP and Competitive MP are probably worth $29.99 each but neither game can compete with their better peers in each respective genre. All I picture when I play this game is that meme with the dog in a lab coat and glasses with the caption, "I have no idea what I'm doing", especially in terms of the the MMO and story elements.. That comes across here. They would have been better off making a Borderlands clone but with a great story... This game was not made with confidence, gameplay aside.

If your playing alone don't even bother with this game and don't expect to make any friends as it's impossible to communicate with people. If you have TWO buddies it can be fun, but guaranteed someone is going to get bored with the repetitive nature and stop playing.

They didn't design it for YOU they designed with many game demographics in mind. Granted, there are a lot of confused elements as the game doesn't explain things beyond the 20 cap too well. Combat is repetitive, but it's also the smoothest, most enjoyable combat I've experienced from a FPS. The MMO/RPG elements are fairly light, but trust me, you'll WANT to grind and farm the legendary weapons. Playing around with gear post-level cap has been far more enjoyable than the actual storyline was. Also, speaking of the story's criticism, if you go to Bungie.net, you can read through all your grimoire cards. Much of the lore is found in there. Some cards come with perks and others monitor your in game progress. Quite brilliant, actually. I figure they wanted to appease the COD fanboys by leaving the story out. Anyone with a functioning brain can read up on the lore. More content is coming. This is just the bare bones. Bungie will be spending the next little while fleshing things out, adding more maps, NPCs, crucible and vanguard matches, as well the raids. To those people who are ANGRY that bungie didn't have SPECIFICALLY their preferences in mind during game development, maybe you should pull your head out of your ass and enjoy this game for what it is. Or maybe you should figure out what it is you really want. Maybe you should design your own game and brace yourself for fanboys hating on YOU. Expand

In the future, competitors in the FPS genre will be assuredly be trying to lift some of the ideas from Destiny to add some mmo-ness into their own games. The core gameplay and controls feel excellent, as you'd expect from a Bungie FPS. Enemy AI is competent, on par with top tier co-op titles like Mass Effect, Gears of War, etc., but I wouldn't say it really stands head and shoulders above it's competitors in this regard. It's a shame the alpha and beta had to take place mostly on the Earth maps, because all the other areas in the game are much more appealing to look at. There are some incredible skyboxes in Mars maps. Competitive multiplayer seems to take a backseat to co-op play this time, in the sense that the character abilities seem like something you would expect in a co-op game. It seems like the abilities in pvp need some balancing and tweaking done, and I'm sure we'll be seeing plenty of balancing updates for pvp in the coming months. However there is less co-op content than I was hoping for, I do hope the expansion packs come out soon and are substantial in the amount of content. I wish repeated playthroughs of levels offered more variety in enemy types and spawns, once you've played an encounter at Lv 30, it's nearly the same every time. I would have preferred more of a randomized enemy spawning system (a la Left 4 Dead) rather than always knowing what lies behind every corner. Explore maps don't have enough different types of side missions yet. Hopefully we can get a ton of new content fast and they will improve on some of these areas, but as of now this game needs help. All that aside though, it's still a ridiculously fun game but Bungie's destiny is yet to be determined. The next few months will tell. 9/10 just for being so much fun, could be a 10 one day but it needs some TLC first. Expand

But Destiny Alpha streams and Beta gameplay sessions changed all of it. First person POV is good, controls are fluid, RPG-like system of variable skill trees and interchangeable weapons -- very nice.

Also, for me, such games is all about exploration: good story is good, but only if it allows me to see 'what else is there?!' -- and Destiny surely allows that via 'Patrol' missions.

Not without flaws -- players communication could be better in part of in-game (voice) chat or more simply|intuitive way to form a Fireteam 'on-the-fly', but -- hey! -- is still a very new game and I feel that it's creator a willing to make changes.

DESTINY IS NOT A FREAKIN MMO.

Bungie and Activision have said that it isn't a damned MMO from the beginning. It's supposed to be you against the hordes of the Darkness making you into a LEGEND. I used to think that was lame but now I am a believer.

If you are a fan of FPS games and like or can put up with light RPG elements then this game is for you. Do not come into it expecting it to be a massively deep RPG because that is not what it is designed to be. I would say the depth of the RPG elements sits around the same level as Diablo 3.

Anyweay, I have been playing this since midnight and I simply enjoy it. Battles are fun and hectic. Multiplayer is diverse and immersive. The worlds and locations are pretty and interesting. The RPG elements are enough to give me my own style. Enemies are fun to kill. Missions could have used a bit more variety. But what else do you want? It perfectly mixes different games in order to have its own identity.

I recommend people to not listen to certain reviews here. Some people did not research the game enough to know that it is an online, shared world shooter. The real game starts at level 20 with the raids. The multiplayer and connections with actual people is suppose to be a big element that people do not understand. Plus, this game tries to innovate the first person shooter genre in ways that people do not understand yet. I am currently giving this a 9/10 after what I have played. But I intend to give at least 100 more hours into Destiny.

However, as I said I don't care too much about that so to me this game is the best multiplayer shooter I've played in years. I could see that Destiny would get boring for single players but I very rarely play it alone. This is a great game for chilling after work and shooting some enemies with great-feeling game mechanics.
To me the best thing about this game is that when you reach level 20 you then have to grind for armour to raise your light level to increase your overall level. Since the only way to do this is either to get lots of marks to spend at vendors or receive armour in random drops, the playability of this game is fantastic. I always feel there is a purpose to me doing a mission again or aiming to do something I wouldn't normally do to strive to get that piece of armour/weapon ive been wanting for ages.
The Crucible online PVP feels great and plays well. The only thing that would be better is if a capture the flag mode was added and also a game mode without supers as that would match my play style better.
My friends and I have been playing this for months and are still on it so that tells a lot. If a bigger variety of bounties/patrol missions was added and a skip button for the cut scenes then this would be a 10/10 for me. However, I can definitely see this game would be a lot worse for single players or players looking for a game with a great storyline. Again, I'll repeat, the storyline is dreadful. But if I want a storyline, great characters and interesting dialogue I'll go watch a Paul Thomas Anderson film. If I want to shoot things, chill with friends and have a load of fun I'll play Destiny.

9/10 (for groups of players), 5/10 (for single players)

Thinking about that makes me wonder about how hard it would have been to enable a conversation system similar to Elders' Scrolls.

Most of the game's functions are confusing. I leveled up one of the factions to level 2 without realizing it. I actual had no clue how to obtain the various currency without internet research. By the way you can't trade anything. You can't see anything. You can only dismantle things. You can't dismantle extra space ships or jet bikes. There are no weapons on the ships or bikes.

The thing I like most is that instead of rushing out a new game every year like most other popular FPS games, Bungie instead continuously evolves the vanilla game to a point where the original game is no longer recognisable and is practically an entirely new game. Expect a long life and religious update and DLC schedule to keep this game a heavy hitter a long time after its original release. First time I have ever played a FPS on a daily basis for a year without getting bored due to the amazing DLC. The only shortfall is that the DLC is rather expensive however you are getting much more than just a few swerve map packs since each DLC adds an entirely new section to the game, on par with games like World of Warcraft. This is a game where you will need friends to enjoy the best features of the game so if you only ever play solo it is difficult to really see what this game has to offer since playing raids with randoms may be a little shakey. Destiny is not my favorite FPS but if you can manage to get over its small learning curve it opens up to be an expansive and immerse game. If you are looking for an original FPS experience that is separate from any other FPS you have played I would recommend this game to you. The game suffers from the lack of communication with players, and the AI are ok but not great.

Despite the mixed reviews if you get the game you need to be open minded and not expect the game to feel familiar like many of the other FPS games you have played. It is a next generation shooter that offers lots of content. It does have a grinding aspect to it which is not common in console shooters but if you manage to get yourself past that it is a fresh next generation experience.

Played the Alpha and Beta and have to say I'm underwhelmed with the final product. Its pretty grindtastic even for an RPG. The story is BLAND. One of the most generic barftastic stories ever. With that said its a quality game. Not a great game but a good game.

No-Offline - I have only had one disconnect and I think it was because my internet actually went out. Nothing to do with the servers. You can play solo with other people around and based on the open world field, it is better to see people hunting around you. They don't mess up playing solo (which is something I enjoy) but you definitely will have benefits playing with friends.

No in-game chat - this is a huge draw back. If a game like BF4 could make this work, albeit glitchy, I am sure Activision and Bungie could have made this happen - so why not? It really makes coordinating a random Fireteam difficult because if you want to join up with someone you meet in game while questing or farming, you need to become PSN friends.

Sound - Using my Wireless Gold Headset, this game sounds terrific.

Gameplay - I would say nothing terribly new but why fix it, if it ain't broken.

Quests - When patrolling, I have found that I can randomly get assigned a quest that is well above my level. I am not sure if this is by design or a mistake, but it can send the game to a crawl. Haven't figured out if I can simply drop these questions so I don't have to run through a zone of bad guys who will one shot me.

Public Events - Incredibly fun but can be a complete butt-hurt episode if not enough people are around.

Those are the things that stick out in my mind. I am sure I will come back and give it a final review way down the road, but for now if you are trying to decide, it is not a Halo remake, it is not a Borderlands Clone, and its not some hybrid. It is a pretty good game worth a pick-up because I guarantee you will put well over 100 hours into this before you realize it.

People who havent played many MMOs dont seem to understand the grinding aspect of this game. Complaining because you have to do the same thing over and over or fighting the same monsters. Um.. hello people, that is what an MMO is. Please show me one MMO that you dont grind in. Ill be waiting for a response. It's not a game for everyone sure. You have to know what you're getting involved in before making a purchase and then whining because it wasnt what you thought. This game is very ambitious and given about 2 years will be quite a fun game due to patches and various updates. The graphics are on par with old gen style Borderlands which isnt a bad thing. The story is eh, but give it time, Bungie is just getting our feet wet. The gameplay is where Destiny shines. Fun and challenging strikes, raids, and pvp will easily keep this game afloat even with the thousands of people trying to pull it down. Sadly there is no chat box option to communicate, which is ridiculous. Every game from now on needs to have a world chat regardless of the game. And where is the voice chatting when matched with randoms? The things they left out of this game are mindless, stupid errors. But they are fixable issues though. Which is Destiny's issue at this point. Mindless errors are randomly plagued all over Destiny's landscape, but in time this will easily be one of the most enjoyable games of 2015. Expand

Great Game, possibly the nearest game to get near Halo as console shooter. Great story, and story mode (which is limited to player will). great replayability, months after having purchased, it is still in my library ready to be played every day. great game if you have a bunch of friends to play with you.

    Is Destiny Fun? Yes
Is Destiny the recreation of Halo changing the Gaming world as we know it? Nope
Is it worth my 60? I think so.

It is a solid shooter that brings many good hours of game play with friends and mixes it up the FPS which are out there for PS4. It is Enjoyible, not perfect but worth the cost of the entry.

Bungie has repeatedly called this a share world shooter. It has elements of mmo and other games in it. Don't buy if you're expecting World of Warcraft with guns and an outer space theme.

Single Player- The story is somewhat of a back thought in this game , its not very prominent and very story driven, however saying that, the snippets of story you get are quite interesting, about the different races and the fall of mankind etc. The atmosphere is very nice aswell, now the game play, is very reminiscent of Halo and Borderlands, however the loot system is somewhat different from borderlands, i have only played as the warlock class so i can't really say about any other other classes however, the skill trees are varied with a choice of 2 sub classes , and different 'perks'. Gun customization isn't that in depth which is a shame.

Multiplayer- The PVP is my favorite part of this game, i think the 6 v 6 is a good number (others are complaining but i think its a good number with the size of the maps, its very balanced from my experience and the fact that in some of the modes level is abolished and everyone is on an equal footing, i played when i was level 5 and i was playing against level 15's and was able to hold my own which i thought was a very good feature.

Overall it's a very good game, it's not a game changer or the setting a new standard for shooters or anything like that but its a damn good game and i am enjoying it a lot

So much hate... There's absolutely no way this game is a 0. If you can't make a rational decision, you shouldn't be reviewing games.

I give this game a solid 8 only for its feeling of repetition (at least in the early game) and annoying load times. Other than that, this game is graphically stunning and great gameplay. It has huge potential and I'm looking forward to what comes next.

The story is pretty forgettable and the PVP is extremely unbalanced, but if you're like me and like a pretty big world to run around with your friends and explore in for a few hours a week, then that's where this game shines. PvE is very balanced, and if anyone says it isn't it's because they're not being careful enough in battles, and they're getting themselves killed. Everyone that I've seen play that has died a lot is because they think they're invincible and try to punch everything to death.

The shooting feels great, especially the pulse rifle, which is my personal favorite. I use a sniper too since a Warlock shouldn't exactly be on the front lines very often, and it feels balanced because a headshot is almost always a one hit kill, and a body shot takes three to four on an evenly levelled enemy. I used the shotgun for the first couple levels, and it packs quite a punch, though for my class it was terrible because it put me too much in harm's way, shotguns are more suited to Titans.

The story is repetitive, but you only really feel it if you try to marathon the whole game in a night, which is very possible. If you stick to a mission or three a day, then by the next time you play it'll feel much less repetitive. An hour a day is the sweet spot for this game, two if you have friends to play with.

Just don't marathon it, you will get burned out and you will find it repetitive.

P.S. The Sparrow is incredibly fun to drive, I've spent a good amount of time just riding around and jumping off makeshift ramps.

TL;DR Play in short bursts with friends, and don't expect a life changing story.

There are only a few things that i feel they should change. One, they need to allow in game audio settings. Some people don't enjoy hearing music when in a gun fight and some people just would like it turned down a bit. As of right now, if you are using in game chat and are also part of a fire team it is very hard to hear your buddies talking while you are shooting things up. I had to invite him to a party chat so that we could turn the chat up and the game down. Another thing is that it doesn't feel very social. While out in the field it is hard to interact with other people. You can't chat with them if you aren't in a fire team and there is no chat bubble you can use to message them quickly. Most people don't even interact with you, they just walk on by. Just so you know, this game is not very fun playing by yourself. I purposefully waited to find some one doing the same mission as me so i could join them. We ended up going from level 4 to level 10. And we became friends. Once i was partied up is was very fun. There needs to be some way to communicate with everyone playing on the same map as you and also needs to be a way to communicate with everyone in the tower with you. Proximity chat would also be nice. Once this is added it will be very easy to join up with people. There should also be some type of guild that you can join so you can connect with many people. But mind you, this is the early stage of an mmo that looks as if it will have a lot added to the game over the years. Expand

+ The gameplay is lovely. It's smooth, paced well, and doesn't feel repetitive.
+ The three classes and multiple weapon types all feel different, yet everything seems extremely balanced. That, my friends, is not easy to pull off. Way to go, Bungie!
+ There aren't ten million statistics. It's easy to understand. However, there's enough there for min/maxers to still have fun min/maxing.
    + The graphics are great.
+ The music gives me goosebumps.
+ This game made me like PvE again. The AI is actually fun to fight, unlike the AI in 75%+ of other games.
+ PvP feels engaging. It doesn't feel like a regular shooter, thanks to the class abilities and weapon types. You can also get some cool loot from it! The RNG aspect of it is great!
+ The game gives you plenty of things to do. It may be considered a "grind" by some people, but it doesn't really feel that way to me.
+ Melee is actually fun. It feels truly powerful.

    Cons:
    - It'd be nice if there were some more players in the maps.
    - An easy way to friend/team up with random people would be great.
    - Some form of voice communication would also be great.
    - The story does feel a bit lacking, even though the premise is cool.
    - There is currently no way to customize your appearance after character creation.

(I was convinced to buy Destiny at the last minute (9/8/2014) by a co-worker. I have never played any of the Halo games, and I've only put a few hours into Call of Duty. Basically, this is a very unbiased review.)

The Crucible feels like some people are way too overpowered. This is mostly due to the powers / abilities of the classes. I wish that the Crucible relied on traditional loadouts, with only certain modes allowing you to use equipment you've acquired in the story mode. Also it feels like this game will get boring after you beat it. Yes Bungie has talked about post-game raids and stuff, but aside from grinding to get more loot, it seems like there isn't really a lot to do. I think in my head I overhyped this game. I played the game multiple times before it released. I played in Alpha AND Beta on PS4, and also in Beta on the Xbox One, which is the system I bought it for. The game has some of the highest production quality I've ever seen. The way everything acts and reacts is simply amazing. Visually, this is a stunner, more so than anything I have currently played outside of the PC world.

    The soundtrack is beautiful.

The story definitely felt incomplete, which is saddening because I only became interested in it part way through.

The Strikes are fun and the boss fights are as any boss fight is, a challenge the first time through.

Otherwise you're hitting standard MMO fare with daily missions, bounties, daily/weekly heroics, events, rep farming and pvp.

Is it the second coming of gaming? No, there isn't a game out there that can do that. It does stand on its own two feet as a great game to play. For those of you who decide on whether or not to play a game on other peoples opinions, you're selling yourself short, form your own opinion on it. Make a character on a friends account and test the waters.

The multiplayer portion is also great fun (though I'm not a huge PVP style player, so it can also be frustrating). I find the game pretty fun by myself, and even more so when playing with others. A good mixture of single player, PVE and PVP make for a game that can be fun for many players. Everyone has their playing styles however so this game can be more fun for some than others.

    Cons:
Like most shooters, most MMOs, and most games you play in general, this game does become repetitive. The general nature of this game being a mixture of FPS and MMO makes it feel even more so. The story isn't a focus while playing, so you don't get drawn into it making the game feel more like a grind.

Overall, I've enjoyed the game quite a bit. I didn't expect much of a story after playing the beta, so I knew what I was getting into. If they made the story draw you in (or even made the "quests" more a part of the story), this game would be great. The lack of story and the feel of grinding after a few hours dulls the experience.

I can't help comparing to Borderlands or even Diablo, but otherwise I wonder about the real necessity for interchangeable inventory without a more in-depth statistic system to be effected by the inventory you equip. The skills are nice to click on to enable when you level.. but the amount of choice is slim at best. There needs to be more here and the potential is there.

    CONS:
LOADING TIME!! - This is next gen. That's supposed to mean something, yet we are developing increasingly graphically demanding games on consoles that are not coming with solid state drives as stock and with an average user bandwidth of what seems like less than 1MBPS. The loading times are necessary but on the PC, it can and should be better.
CUSTOMIZATION / OPTIONS - I want to be able to play a private campaign. I want to be able to skip cut-scenes!! That is a must! I want more in-depth player armor and ship customization (colors/emblems) This is key stuff for a game that promises big things!

People who rate this game under a 6 are simply bitter about the hype or shouldn't be playing FPS. There is a solid base game that carries over key Halo elements that deserve a 6 to a 7 alone if it didn't innovate beyond that. This is a damn good game! Not yet a great game but just because they didn't get there, don't poop the bed for everyone else.

Destiny is a really good edition to an already acclaimed lineup of games from Bungie. The shooting mechanics could not get any better and are some of the best that I have ever played. The only downfall that I see with Destiny is the story. The story doesn't really suck you in at all and it's a light touch overall. Overlooking that, it's a great game to play with your friends.

This game is enjoyable at the start, however late in game it feels repetitive, and every once and awhile the games ai bugs out. However some story missions were unforgettable and fun, also the strikes and raids I always remembered and enjoyed. The patrols suck at the moment. For what its worth, its not half bad.

level 32 is the cap but raid bossses can hit as high as 35 on hard modes even with 6 raid members it is almost impossible without full raid gear sets.

Destiny is a game of rich vibrant planets, awesome weapons and terrifying and intriguing enemies. I found myself fully immersed and heavily challenged in certain areas of the game. The blurring of the lines between online and story mode aspects work perfectly, as the inclusion of online players in your campaign missions imbue further atmosphere.

What a shame, you should only ever review a game when you have actually finished it. And that means beating the Vault of glass. The raid is very fun, and Destiny is a great cooperative experience. Unfortunately, at launch it wasn't available yet, much like today's hottest game, the Division. The reason this game only gets an 8 is the lack of story, and the long wait times recently between meaningful content. I find it unfortunate the old raids are currently fazed out. Otherwise, addicting and fun!!! Expand

Seriously, the people who gave this game bad scores need some friends to play with. This game is a cross between Halo and Borderlands, with a smidge of MMO thrown in. Thats what it was designed to be, and thats what it delivers.

Regardless, it doesnt warrant a red score just for that.

The problem with these low score reviews is they expect the ever elusive, 100% unique, genre defining MMO theyve been expecting since WoW. That, as usual, means theyll hate on it because it doesnt revolutionize the genre, yet they'll bow down to the next CoD iteration despite the fact its the exact same thing as the CoD before it.

Some are complaining that this isn't Borderlands / this isn't Halo: No, it isn't. It's Destiny. C'mon now.

Lastly, a big complaint is the lack of single player and the lack of a good chat system for multiplayer... the lack of a single player may be a deal breaker for some but certainly not worth a 0 or a 1 review. Single player isn't really possible with this game given the open world idea it has going on. On your way to a mission, you'll come by plenty of other Guardians fighting off hordes, and can join in with them. Who knows, maybe they're heading in the same direction as your quest. These impromptu "fireteams" are a lot of fun to experience, especially when an optional event spawns in your map.

As far as the lack of voice chat goes, I'm with you on that one. But again, that doesn't really warrant a mass drop of the score.

Destiny definitely has a unique feel to it, which I think some might take to be empty or generic. I don't really feel that way. The worlds feel a bit desolate and isolated, but in a way that space probably should. You're never completely alone playing, even when you don't have a fireteam because there are other players doing their own missions in the same area as you. This was a really nice surprise. I feel like what's there is a great basis for an online community to dwell and grow in. I'm excited to see what more this game has to offer.

As far as the story goes, it's almost not there, but what is is interesting and intriguing. I'd definitely prefer a sparse story to one that sucks. There's been nothing corny or over the top about the game, which is usually what pulls me out of being immersed.

Of course people are comparing this to Borderlands and Halo, which makes sense. However, I think this is a little bit more of a refined experience than both. It's definitely a mature product in a game making sense.

My advice is to not listen to all the negative reviews on this and try the game out for yourself. Is it the best game ever made? No, it's not. It is worth $60? Yes, absolutely.

First off, anyone giving this game less than 6 is reviewing it based on some missed expectation that they had, and not based on the game as it stands.

The story missions were fun, though playing them on hard is a necessary for anyone looking for any kind of challenge with a fireteam. When I took the time to actually look around, some of the environments I was taken too where quite impressive. Whenever I started to feel bored with the single player a new planet would open up, bringing new environments to explore and new enemy types. The story itself was easily dismissed by many, but I found that if I actually listened to everything and payed attention to why I was doing things it was more enjoyable. I think it didn't resonate with more people because storytelling would frequently happen without taking a break from the game. You would be running around and collecting ammo or whatever usually while the narrator (ghost) was talking and the dialogue just didn't pop out as much.

The content opens up a lot after lvl 20. The strike missions on heroic/impossible difficulties presented a great challenge for fireteams and made teamplay a necessity. I didn't get a chance to try out the 6-man raids though...

PvP is a lot of fun, and I can see myself spending a lot of time there. I'm really a CoD/BF player that enjoys single player/coop games like Borderlands and Mass Effect on the side. The matches I played in the crucible were exciting and the map variety was decent. Many people felt that in the Beta there was no weapon to use outside of the automatic rifle, but I felt like each weapon type could be successful with an appropriate change in tactics (though I believe the day one patch had a bit to do with balancing it out). You don't sprint into the middle of a firefight with a revolver any more than you would snipe with a shotgun. Being able to change your weapon loadout mid-match is a great feature, as it gives you the ability to change up your strategy based on the map and the enemies tactics.

I felt like there were some missed opportunities though. More mission variety would have been nice. For example, there was one mission in particular where you picked up a big sword and held off a wave of enemies with a brutal sword/melee attack. It presented a slight change of pace, an opportunity to feel overpowered (without actually being so, as you would get your ass kicked by the elites if you spent too much time in melee range). Most of the missions were similar "go here, kill guys, kill an elite/boss, go home" type missions, mixing attacking new areas with defending against incoming waves. Maybe more missions where you did a lot with vehicles, or got into turrets, or any other single player FPS tropes. I also felt like there wasn't enough loot drops. When it takes 10 minutes and/or multiple attempts to take down a boss, have him drop a cool weapon or gadget for the lower levels. There was more loot in end game content, but getting there takes a while and the lack of rewards from killing bosses was taxing when going through the story the first time. Also, I miss the big multiplayer matches (8v8 or 12v12) in multiplayer, and the vehicle variety in both single and multiplayer. A few Halo-esque vehicle missions would have been a welcome addition to the story missions. To say that the movement and gunplay didn't feel at least a little Halo-esque would be a lie, and I want my blood gulch!

Overall it is a solid game, with loads of content. I felt like it had a little bit of something for everyone, with a enjoyable campaign for casual, a solid end-game for hardcore, and fun PvP for that crowd. I can assume some of the things I thought were missing had to be cut based on the amount of development time they had in creating these massive worlds and multiple ways to experience it. Hopefully we see the addition of some of those things with the upcoming expansions, and we don't have to wait until "Destiny 2" to get it. I for one look forward to spending a lot of time gearing up multiple classes and having fun in multiplayer for now. See you on the battlefield!

The advertising for the game seems to bill it equally as MMO and online FPS, however I feel that Destiny has managed to craft something a little different that may not be a killer app the way that Halo was, but definitely introduces some neat ideas that would love to catch on. In particular I enjoy how well the whole package is tied together. from one menu you can choose to do PvE content, Co-op, or PVP and they all feed into one another so that you never feel that your time invested is wasted or segmented from the rest. I often skip PvP when I play MMORPGs because it is isolated (Typically) from the PvE content and it feels like I'm trying to progress two different characters in very similar games, which I don't enjoy. Instead, you earn great experience points, armor, as well as additional PvP rewards from participating in the 4 PvP modes, and all of that progress helps you in the "single-player" game as well. This, to me, is the biggest selling point of Destiny because the other good points of the game are self-evident. It looks great, controls great, etc. But since the game is trying to convince us all that it is different, I felt it was important to focus on what those differences are.

Besides the Hybrid PvE/PVP content being done well, i really enjoy the way they have designed leveling up, and the separate classes. At level up you're given a skill point to distribute, and your skills screen is separated into columns, although it just looks like one big block of cubes. For example, while you might have 40 squares on the screen, the top row of 5 would be completely different skills or bonuses and anything below would be related. It could be a different grenade style (Grenades are on a cool-down timer rather than a lootable item, also) or it could be a stat boost that has trade-offs. You can freely trade between the skills that have trade-offs or offer competing benefits as you unlock them, as well.

Depending on the rarity of your items, you also have skills on your weapons and armor that get unlocked. For example, on a Blue quality drop, you have a similar "Skill Tree" where you use the weapon or item enough and it earns XP that unlocks the ability to pay for upgrades with in-game currency. This could be a better scope, or a more interesting feature like improving stability the longer it is fired, or increases reload speed after an emptied clip.

The classes (Titan, Hunter, Warlock) all have a unique look, and have a unique "Special Weapon" category for signature arms (Sniper for hunter, for example), and their armor all has a unique look that reveals their class.

The story thus far is completely forgettable in it's current state, but I don't think it's too late to salvage that. The world itself is interesting enough, and I think that given the resources they've been allowed to this project, Bungie is more than capable of taking gamer feedback and doing something constructive. Will it be done? Probably not. Could it be done? Definitely, the foundations are there.

    Now, on to some negatives.

Each PvE mission is represented on a map of a planet you fly to (You visit multiple). And while the locations on the map are different, you always seem to start in the same location. I believe I have figured out that the map is representative of the "Zone" a la traditional MMO style, but it is misleading from my expectations of a new map, or at least a new spawn point. When you're on the moon, you're always spawning in the same place. You will pass familiar locations, places you've been before on other missions, but will go to an entirely new place, or return to see the effects of other things you did in a location. I think they could represent this better since the screen you choose your mission at shows locations that look like they're very very far apart, but in reality you're looking at the map of a zone, and starting at a static point before moving to the location of the mission.

Missions are very very very repetitive. They are always "Go here, trip the invisible wire and enemies pour in. Work your way to a piece of tech that Peter Dinklage wants to hack into, hold enemies off until he's done. Repeat." However... it's a shooter. I wasn't expecting anything revolutionary, and honestly I am content with the host of new abilities I get from leveling up that stay a bit more grounded than the silliness that Borderlands sticks to. If you're expecting to pick up a new weapon every five minutes with sticky bullets that explode enemies into chunky acid that sets other enemies on fire... this is not the reality of Destiny. It is a much more tame, and grounded experience in regards to the type of gameplay Borderlands introduced us to.

As with most mainstream gaming fans, players seem incapable of providing an opinion between these extremes. Metacritic should just use an "Enjoy" or "Did not enjoy" rating system for user reviews, because people seem to be tragically incapable of providing honest, balanced, sane user reviews.

You'll have morons giving a 0 when they can't launch the game, or a 0 due to one small feature bothering them. That's not a 0 folks. You wait until you can play to review, and in the case of a single feature that irks you, you balance your score around that negative and the positives.

Stop embarrassing yourself and other gamers with these polarized extremes. Destiny isn't a 0, come on! It's certainly a baseline 6 or greater title, by any objective measure of recent game releases.

Look at some of these 0 scores. They come from people who gave 10 to the last Call of Duty and 0 to Grand Theft Auto V, or vice-versa. We're talking about people with chips on their shoulders, personal vendettas, zero perspective, or a chronic disability with communication.

Grow up. Destiny is easily a solid 7 for me, has improved to an 8 via more focused play with people on my Friend list, and it should easily give me my $60 worth over the next few months.

Stay open-minded, gamers. Knee-jerk scoring extremes are just embarassing - or outright lies. Consider some of these Destiny users that give 0 to the PS4 version and 10 to the Xbox One version - or the other way around. Why would you trust these people? People are so accustomed to vomiting opinions on the Internet with little-to-no perspective, fire and forget style, how can we expect to trust a subset of entertainment fans with notoriously small attention spans?

GAMERS, let's do better. Let's expose the dumb and review with proper balance and perspective. Help your fellow gamer instead of airing your dirty laundry with unintelligible emotional hang-ups.

C'mon, guys - make a mental checklist of your actual positives vs. negatives, and mold your score around that. I'm going to keep playing and evaluating, holding at 8/10 with future content additions in mind.

Destiny is a new type game. It is not right to call it an MMO or an FPS and comparing it in this way is wrong. From my play with it so far (just coming up to level 15) it feels like an FPS with extra widgets and applications added that draw inspiration from MMO style games. I also don't think you will find this much content available in the vast majority of FPS titles.

Personally, I think its a fantastic achievement, but lets go into more detail.

    Presentation
Nobody can claim that this isn't a beautiful game. The polish, from the environments to the finer details on the armour is magnificent and a sight to behold. There are some minor issues (different armour/weapons can bug on cutscenes) but otherwise the visuals are stunning

    Gameplay
This is where Destiny shines. It was to be expected from Bungie but every element of the gameplay is slick and engrossing. The controls are logical, animations are smooth and you feel in control of everything you do (getting on your vehicle is smooth as butter). There is a good variety of weapons (for an FPS game) and grenades/supercharge powers add tactical elements to combat. While there isn't anything new to the formula here, everything works perfectly and playing through Destiny has never felt like a chore.

    Story
Not the strongest point of Destiny. The story is pretty generic but interesting enough to keep you involved. It is let down ultimately by stale story missions, where they do become a bit repetitive after a while. It was also an odd choice to put so much of the story in "Grimoire cards" making them less accessible.

    Raids/Strikes/Exploring
On top of the 15 hour or so campaign there is also exploring the planet. This is interesting to an extent (high level bosses, loot) but it is mostly the same areas as the story mission. Raids and Strikes however are extremely fun. 3-6 teams must beat large hordes of enemies and difficult boss battle. Are they bullet sponges? Yes, but the difficulty is high enough to make it engaging and interesting.

    Difficulty
I think this is often overlooked when looking at this game. I have never felt overly comfortable at any point while playing the game. And I have died a lot during the strike/raid missions. This keeps it exciting and keeps you on your toes throughout playing the game

    Multiplayer
There are two parts to this. Firstly, you can play in fireteams doing any mission in the game, during any raid or just exploring. Destiny is immensely fun with a friend. Better still, if you have a higher level friend join, the enemies are made that bit tougher so not to overwhelm you but not to make it too easy for your friend

Secondly, the PvP. The crucible is a bit bare bones at the moment, and there are some balancing issues. Thus it is fun. So so fun. Because all the gameplay mechanics are so highly polished you can jump right in and have a ball. Does need to be fleshed out a bit more though.

    Other
    -The voice acting isn't perfect
-In my opinion, there is no Grind. Grinding implies effort and boredom. I have not felt this while playing this game
    -Overhyped

    Verdict
This is only the beginning of the Destiny journey. There is already a massive amount to do in the game, not to mention endless PvP and, if you don't focus too much on the few minor issues, you can have an incredible amount of fun. Ludicrous amounts of fun. And, ultimately, isn't that what we play video games for?

This is one of the best the best games ever made, and it is only going to get better. Especially fun to play with friends. Lots of fun and very addictive. The game mechanics are great, the loot collecting is addictive, the music and art is awesome. It has done an amazing job of combining the advanced mechanics of FPS games, with the loot and economy aspects of MMOs.

There are lots of people complaining out there after spending 100s of hours playing it. Think about it, if its that bad why have they played it for 100s of hours? And then they complain about having to spend a measly $20 every few months to play for hundreds of more hours. It is actually great value for money, and I will certainly be buying every expansion that comes out.

Destiny has some problems and it will NEVER sit alongside Star Wars, Lord of the Rings (don´t be so silly, Bungie)... But it´s a good game after all.

I didn't stick to all of the hype, I made my own opinion from what I saw during the beta, I enjoyed the beta, I'm enjoying the full game even more, its been one of the few games I've played from release day for a week, the other game being GTA V, I'm enjoying myself at the moment, and I will continue to enjoy this game for months to continue

    CONS
    - Can get quite lonely and boring if you play alone
    - Not enough PVP or Strike maps
    - Story does not have a lot of dialogue
    - Voice acting quite poor

Destiny is a game which is has quite a few elements to it. There are raids, strikes, open world
exploration, story mode and also PVP. What I can say is that this game does not do any of these elements brilliant however, it does seem to do it all very good.

The story first of all is quite fun however the voice acting is poor and there is not a lot of dialogue. The fact that you can play the story mode with 2 other friends is also a bonus as this makes the experience a lot more fun.

I am finding the strikes so far very good and there is also different level strikes which offers better loot the harder you go. This gives you sence of progression and reward which entices you to play more of them.
I can say the game appears to be quite harder as well than playing the beta version which makes the battles more interesting.

Bungie said that this game really starts at level 20 and I can see where they are coming from. You feel more rewarded and more progression when hitting level 20 and trying to get more gear.

I have not had a lot of experience with the PVP yet only an hour however I have found it fun to play especially with friends. Some people say that PVP is quite repetitive as there are not a lot of maps and no filters to take out the maps you dont want but the game modes do seem fun not a lot of difference to Halo or Call of Duty.
In some ways i do think it is quite limited at the moment on content (i.e strike/pvp maps) however, I do feel that the game will only get better as time goes on and I am very interested to see what the expansions give us.

All in all there is quite a few things bungie can do to improve this game which I do believe will happen over time the game though is very fun to play with friends and i would reccommend to people who enjoy Halo and Borderlands.

I dont know why people are giving such low scores for this game especially for the fact of no offline single player mode. Everyone knew deep down this was going to be online only and bungie nor activision hinted about offline play. This game is fun to play and I am really enjoying my time in the game.

While the story itself seems weak so far (mind you I'm not super far into the game), the fun of playing through the missions and exploring the evels with one or two of your friends more than makes up for the lack of story depth. I have never been a huge fan of RPGs, so while I understand why people are disappointed by the lack of dialogue in the game, it doesn't really bother me. Keep in mind that it's a FPS first, MMORPG second. With that said, if you like FPS games, then this is a solid buy. If you were a fan of the Halo series, then you should definitely get enjoyment out of it. If you're looking for a real RPG experience a la Skyrim or Mass Effect, look elsewhere. Expand

It's a fun, entertaining experience with enough content to keep you interested for a long amount of time. Those looking for the next big change in gaming history like some people were honestly expecting should look elsewhere.
In Destiny, you're basically a "Guardian" that's tasked with defending the world against the enemies of the "Traveller," a planet that arrived and bought prosperity to the human race or something like that. The darkness arrived and basically destroyed everything, and you are there with your trusty Ghost to save what's left. The story is quite underwhelming and poorly explained. Other than Peter Dinklage's good voice acting telling you "See this place? It used to be awesome...shame..." you really get little explanation as to what happened and why you should care.
The overall presentation is good, with shiny visuals and great music. There aren't that many locations at launch, but each location is full of stuff to do. There's a good attention to detail here, and it feels like a very polished experience.
The gameplay is loot-driven as you constantly get new weapons and gear and swap out to see which ones you like. Enemies level up as you do and you'll need to use your abilities to survive. The game is challenging at points, but the gunplay is smooth and the enemies are varied in different locations. Upgrading my character with new gear and abilities was very engaging, particularly when the character creation made me able to create a pretty accurate (but more badass) version of myself. The overall game makes you feel like a badass when you're playing it, so if you want that then this is for you.
The online multiplayer is descent enough, though nothing that interesting in my opinion. It's from the creators of Halo so if that's what you'll like then that's what you'll get. The idea of weapons you've found from your adventures being used in PvP sounds good, but it makes it really unbalanced at points. It's not bad as I'm having a lot of fun with it, it's just not that amazing or revolutionary.
Being only 30FPS, it's a surprisingly smooth, game, and the controls are descent and make sense. I have yet to run into any glitches either and, whenever I die, I feel it's because of me and not because I feel cheated by the game. You know that feeling. Even in multiplayer, it passes the blame more onto that guy with the OP weapon way better than mine than the game itself.
Like I had said, though, the game is very fun and above all else that is what should matter. It plays well, it has enough content to last a while from launch and the customisation is in-depth and engaging. I've been having great fun playing the game and can't wait to play more. If fun is what you're looking for, then this is the game for you. If you're looking for "more than a game" or all these other BS taglines that have been associated with this product then you will be disappointed. It's a fun and engaging game, no more and no less.

What is most amazing of all is that despite its litany of weird little problems, Destiny is fantastic, its combat up there with the very best, the thrilling rhythm of its battles still not fading the 30th time through, and it has no single systemic problem that is not fixable. [Dec 2014, p.106]

Destiny is a flawed but still extremely fun first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a way it adds to the game's addictiveness. [Oct 2014]
