This game feels like part 1 of an amazing game. At the moment its a very very good game, very easy to pick up and play, the more you play, the more there is. Visuals are great. Community could be better if a lone player but otherwise really great for the casual gamer.

A great FPS with a great multiplayer option, nice weapons and a lot of users playing all day so you can level up and find a bigger challenge on a co-op mode, the cons? Story, at least you can use it as a training for all the on line experiences

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I know im going to get a lot of hate for this but im not the type to really give a flying toast about it.

This might not come to you as a surprise to you guys but all you see on this forum all day, everyday, all the god damn time is someone whining, complaining, crying, hating or telling everyone that their leaving destiny forever. So I decided to make this post of appreciation.

I like Destiny, Im 25 years old, married, no children. I paid about 100$ for this game(including both dlcs), and I have over 1000 combined hours of play time and entertainment from it, I would be an ungrateful brat if I said that I didn't get my moneys worth. Destiny allows me to burn free time with enjoyment. I like the thrill you get when you finally obtain the exotic that you've been waiting for. I like to open chests and find undiscovered presents. I love the fact that no matter how bad Bungie Fcks up, I keep coming back for more. I like the fact that this game entertains me enough that I don't have to spend more dough on other games(for the meanwhile). I love the fact that unlike COD, team tactics are actually essential and necessary to beat the competition. I love the fact that you have so many different things to do every week, all you have to do is chose(Poe/ToO/Nightfalls/Crota raid/Vog raid/Crucible/Farming/Bounties/Strikes). i love the fact that (LFG) allows you to meet new people, and play together from all over the world(diversity is awesome), conversating with them, making new gaming friends, have some laughs about Bungies mistakes, and knocking Skolas on his arse. I love the sense of accomplishment that you feel when you first beat a new raid, or the first time you get 9-0 in ToO, The first time you get that Darn GJallarhorn(although some of you havnt gotten it yet, it will come).

I know that some of you will hate
Some of you will be teachers, and correct my spelling mistakes
Some of you will insult or degrade
Some of you will dispute that this game is actually pretty good
Haters gona hate, ainters gona aint...you hate us cuz you ainus
But that has nothing to do with this post.

All im saying, is that we should appreciate destiny for what it is. A fun, sometimes rewarding, addicting, very social, visually stunning and enticing game. If it wasn't, people wouldn't have hundreds of hours invested into it.

    Sincerely,
    A satisfied casual gamer

The worst part is the lack of content and that Bungie and Activision are aiming for players who would pay anything to play it, they release low content DLCs at a very high price. The history takes like 4 hours, and once you've finished it you'll just repeat it over and over and over again getting bored to death.

It's true you have a lot of collectibles to get (exotic weapons and Grimoire cards mostly) that in order to get them all you'll have to do what I just said: Repeat everything over and over again, and pray that you get de loot you're looking for.

But like I said, the Crucible saved this game for me, if not I would've quit very fast.

Destiny overall is an amazing game! I will admit that the story line is not the best thing the video game world has seen. The thing that makes Destiny such a great game is the community. The streams, Youtube videos, and Podcasts really adds a whole new level to the game. For the new players who are just now beginning Destiny I recommend get active in the community.

The community of destiny is vast, full of people ready to help either for fun or even for activities a little more serious. Destiny I think is one of the best games of the year, for all its content, the game itself to the dlc that I recommend to buy absolutely. The only flaw of this game is the value that the game is not explained very well and what the bungie has decided to make an application that clearly explains all the lore that surround it, in my opinion a somewhat awkward method for players. Simply put, there is no game on the market that comes anywhere close to what Destiny does. As a game design enthusiast, I feel they just got so much right in this title.

    - The three weapon load out is a golden triangle. Switching between primary, secondary and heavy weapons in pitched battles feels clutch. You have options, but not too many. The power level for each feels highly appropriate. The available combinations to experiment with are numerous. They pioneered this tight + controlled weapon loadout concept in the original Halo and the design language remains strong in Destiny.

    - To continue with the point above, the gameplay and pace for an FPS feels perfect to me. Having the gunfighting component complimented with melee, grenades, and super we see that another golden triangle emerges. Tying stats to these skills was smart. Most all of they make your guardian truly feel *powerful* and unique. The RPG component of this game really has merit and doesn't detract from the FPS elements in the slightest. The skill trees remain fairly balanced between and among classes.

    - While the story was definitely...lacking in plot and exposition, the level + world design has been consistently spot on. Every area feels textured, detailed and respectively thought out. So many beautiful vistas. Travelling through the world on your sparrow can be a pure joy - providing a welcome break from the fettered pace of combat. Another beautiful and under-appreciated design feature.

    - The sound design in this game is the best I've ever come across. No title matches Destiny my honest, humble opinion when it comes to sound effects. Certain exotics are just sound addictive. Sparrows sound amazing. The hugely varied enemies all have amazing triggered sounds upon death and it compliments the FPS mechanics perfectly. You just want to keep popping off enemies.

    - They finally added meaningful multiplayer to an FPS. Competitive PvP is great and all, but what really makes Destiny sweet is the strikes and raids. These are the bread and butter of Destiny and really what make it stand apart from other games on the market. I've been a huge proponent of cooperative gameplay ever since Halo 1 truly pioneered split-screen play. Playing with other humans against AI just makes it so much more involving and fun, it's hard to put a finger on it. The loot from these activities is a huge draw that keeps you coming back for more, reminds me very much of Diablo 2. Completing your first raid feels like a huge accomplishment in teamwork. The feeling is really only matched by a handful of MMORPGs. Bungie deserves all the credit in the world for bringing this not only to FPS players, but to console users as well.

    - The lore is captivating and the entire premise of the world is highly alluring. I love how this is a science fiction title based in our own solar system, not some randomly named star-system we could care less about. The combination of familiarity and wonder really comes together for a backdrop that is truly unmatched for the vast majority of game titles. This is a game I willingly invest myself in because it's just so damn cool. Coolest game I've played in the last decade. This is obviously a highly subjective opinion but I just had to say it.

What more can you ask from a game!

There are some bugs, glitches, and exploits. However, I appreciate the way Bungie is working on these, communicating, and fixing these with the gaming community. All points to Bungie on this.

When you get into Destiny, and if you stay with this game for a while, I doubt you can easily put this game aside for a long time- expansions and sequels.

The best things about Destiny are:
    1. The iron banner multiplayer event.
    2. The raids.
    3. The overall content.
    4. Nightfall strikes.
    5. XUR
    6. Guns.
    7. The joy on dancing with your team or solo.
    8. Grinding - yes, grinding is not bad as you multiple choices on how you grind. -so choose your fun thing and grind away.
    9. The soundtrack.
    10. (Not the least) the multiplayer mechanics - probably the best in the market.

The only flaw or negative comment on my part will be that the release of content is pretty slow. If we had a bit more content available now rather than waiting for the next Dlc, more people will resist switching to alternate games that release in the gaps between the DLCs.

This game certainly stands out and ahead of the crowd.

First off ill start with the mechanics, very similar to Halo, which means that they are good, everything is very responsive. Yeah their isn't really a story, but i'm not one for stories in games so if you are remember, this is no story at all. A lot of people complain about the cost of the DLC but if you compare destiny to other MMO's, which it is marketed as, $60 for the game and $35 for the expansions over 7 months equates to paying about 14$ a month. Which is pretty standard for an MMO. Now if you count the 5 or so months until the next expansion, the price gets even lower. As for the negative comments about the game being "Grindy" well yeah it is, and once again it was marketed as an MMO. The problem is most people just want to be handed stuff today, so i guess having to work for it would be disappointing. Finally, the game is not perfect they could use more maps in the multiplayer and more variety in the strikes. My biggest gripe with this game is the fact that almost all of the content in the end game is cheesed. This takes away any challenge and any fun and also contributes to the fact that people say that the game is boring. Expand

Let me start off by saying that I understand why some people are disappointed. But, while Destiny may seem lackluster in some regards, that is far from the truth.

Destiny is, at it's core, is a very gameplay driven experience. Any one who played the Halo trilogy will probably understand the genius of the subtle AI variety between different types of enemies, and the extremely polished shooting and movement mechanics that have been implemented here. The gameplay has elements like these that, to the uncritical eye, may seem "dull" or "boring", but upon further examination have an immense amount of thought put into them. As well, the game has a surprisingly robust RPG character management layered in. On top of this, the fact that your guardian perfectly fits into a multiplayer arena, that at launch seems to have very little balancing issues, is an astonishing feat of game making that only a studio like Bungie or Rockstar could pull off. So, what about the story?

Well, A wouldn't even say that Destiny has a "Narrative" per say. It's more of an layered back story and current world state that you are dropped into. If you are looking for something like what Halo or Bioshock brings to the table story-wise, look elsewhere because that is not what is being offered here. Like I said earlier, this is a gameplay driven experience, like Counterstrike, or Pac Man. But unlike those titles, Destiny puts one of the most exhilarating coats of paint I have ever seen in my 15 years of gaming on top of this core experience.

The presentation. Wow, just wow. The atmosphere, the immersion, the sound, just about everything presentation wise is nothing short of brilliant. Never have I been pulled into a console game this much just due to how it presents itself. The rustic wasteland of Old Russia, the creepy baroness of the moon, the wide open dunes of mars, and a handful of other locales all look (and play) very uniquely. Not to mention the incredibly varied ambiance that exists in each area (props to the audio team). It is a combination of the gorgeous visuals and deeply layered sound design that really transcend all the other elements of the game. And obviously Marty O'Donnell can not be overlooked here, he delivers as usual with a soundtrack that is both atmospheric and energetic. Never has a game that is so gameplay driven, given me this much incentive to stop and smell the roses.

I hope I have gotten my point across: It is the subtle things that Bungie delivers in droves with Destiny. So take your time with this game, enjoy the environments and the lore which drip with atmosphere, because Bungie has managed to create a very rich experience without the shackles of a typical narrative. You make your own story, so have a little imagination and appreciate the world that is Destiny. Any one who loves playing games, and who truly appreciates the craft of game making, should buy Destiny in a heartbeat. It is reminiscent of Halo: Combat Evolved in how simple, yet complex it can be. On the surface, it is amazing fun to just shoot aliens in the face with big guns, but underneath that surface, a truly interesting and intriguing universe exists, begging to be explored. I honestly believe that this game is a masterpiece, and I expect very high critical praise once the reviews start rolling in. Props to Bungie and everyone involved in the project.

I would fair much better, and enjoy PvP much more, if I could use my keyboard and mouse to **** on people.

    - LFG is great, but lacks in some areas. Please, Bungie, please... just make every strike and raid fall under matchmaking. You get all these folks out there that defend Nightfall, VoG, and Crota's End for not falling under matchmaking, because somehow it would make the game easier if it were? I'm sorry, but not having a job and a family to take care of doesn't make you "hard core" or make the game any more challenging to you. Matchmaking is essential for me, and many others, because I just don't have the time (or the amount of personal online friends) to start my own group or wait to join one. You don't hurt anyone by making all content LFG. Just do it.

Other than these two issues, this is the best game on current-gen consoles and is one of the best games I have ever played, period.

The game's mechanics are fantastic-shooting is tight and controlled. Initially there were range issues with guns, but those have been fixed over time for the most part. The reason to play this game is, currently, PvP. There's a variety of modes and there's no better shooter out right now for the PS4. In addition to that, the soundtrack and sound design are excellent.

The PvE, however, leaves much to be desired. Enemy AI is incredibly simplistic, so shooting aliens in the face gets tiring very quickly. Story missions are incredibly repetitive, and playing the same strikes over and over gets repetitive as well. DLC content is sparse, but you must buy it in order to level past 30. Destiny's PvE suffers incredibly due to monotony, and needs new content if it is to remain competitive.

The story also leaves much to be desired. It is clear from the Grimoire Cards that Destiny has great lore, yet none of this shows up in the game. Destiny's poorly-written, barely-there story is a disappointment, but something that can still be improved upon in future installments.

Destiny's PvE gets boring fast, and its story is subpar at best, yet its RPG elements and great mechanics make it fun to play regardless. There is much room for improvement in future single-player and PvE content, but if you enjoy the genre, Destiny is worth purchasing.

While there is no real story, and the strikes you have to do get repetitive, the real fun begins in doing nightfall missions and Raids. Nightfall missions are really difficult strikes that require communication with your team mates (and you will need team mates!!). The same goes for the Raids, you will need to find 5 other players to take on the raid, whether from existing friends, the bungie website, or the numerous raid group finders which now exist. While some people complained that raids should have match making, i disagree. The game really forces you to find people in the community (which isnt to hard), and work together to take it on. Communication is essential. A good raid team vs a bad raid team makes the difference between finish the raid on normal in an hour or 5 hours (or not at all in some cases).

the multiplayer is alot of fun, my only complaint is that there are too few maps, but thats only a minor issue.

Overall, the game really kicks in at end game when you need to take on harder objectives to get better armour and reach higher levels. Its the first game ive kept playing after the "story" mode without focusing on trophies. I can see how it can get repititive at times doing the same strikes over and over again, but for some reason im still playing this?

the exotic weapons really at a different element of play and all different classes/sub classes weapon choice affect how you will take on your enemies.

Overall, Enjoyed the multiplayer when you just want to relax and take people on online, the online community have really made this game what it is, without them and the support from bungie I wouldnt pay it much. The draw backs is that there is no real story mode, and the missions keep coming back at you in the form of strikes, nightfalls, weekly heroics, etc...

In order to hit the level cap, you must play through raids, which are by far the most fun aspect to this game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Destiny. It's hard to dissect destiny because on one hand it has an amazingly immersive, persistent and addictive public aspect that ever changes, updating mini tasks and challenges on the daily once you hit the soft level cap to keep you tied over as well as a weekly overall reset that offers some extremely difficult challenges by way of strikes and raids but on the other hand a terribly frustrating loot system, tendency to need grinding and weak story mode seek to make this game addictive but annoying.
so, story mode, feeding in some big name actors it seems like Bungie and Activision had the right idea, only it is also easy to see that they didn't give it quite the storytelling that it so deserved and with the $500m budget, the big name actors are simply pushed into a corner where they don't get much game time. they story is left feeling dry and confused as though they scratched it together at the end after spending all their time on the other aspects of the game.
Cooperatively and competitively though, destiny begins to shine and with it's impressive size and visuals, minus one or two frame rate drops, it does just that. Level your character up to the soft level cap of 20 and you'll unlock a myriad extra content to sniff at jumping into various strikes and raids with your friends (which is advised because solo is nails) that'll level your character up with gear to increase your guardians 'light' level so you can take on even deadlier challenges for even bigger rewards. the daily and weekly server resets will have you itching to see what challenges await next and what possible loot you can gain. if you're not a fan of any of this you can jump into the crucible, Destinys own PvP multiplayer area where even more unique loot can be earned. interesting is Xur, a mysterious vender who appears only on weekends with many high end items in tow for you to spend your hard earned exotic currencies on, acts as an interesting touch to the game and gives you the chance to get your hands on some amazing stuff, that's if he has what you want...
However, with all this in mind there are a few hiccups that seem to be present and prominent. one is the annoying 'Random number generator' loot system which works like a dice roll to decide what loot drops you get. One personal experience of mine is having played a 15 minute crucible session one chap jumper in at the end, did nothing and was rewarded with a coveted weapon many so desperately seek this along with the grind of saving up vanguard and crucible marks (of which you can only earn 100 per week) can leave the game being a massive grind to simply advance one level.
Overall Destiny is a game you'll play for hours and hours providing you don't mind the game, with three characters to max out you'll be here for months if you don't mind the grind. A visual and audio score to die for with a disappointing story and annoying loot system make this game an 8/10.

This game has the element of being a shameless collectathon -- I might be the first one to make this comparison but it's the exact reason that I loved Banjo-Kazooie. This is a gamer's game to the very core. Collect, cash-in for loot, repeat. Completing end game content in a group setting is some of the all-time greatest co-op in my opinion. This game deserves to be discussed with the likes of Skyrim, Ocarina of Time, and other all-time classics.

What makes it even better is the fact that reviewers more or less panned the game. And bungie couldn't care less because of the community that emerged. This isn't about IGN or gamespot, or any COD game that will inevitably get 9s and 10s. This is originality, and something that the gaming industry was NOT ready for. Bungie, thank you so so much. One of the best games I've ever played. Its so addictive with superb graphics. and Its getting better and better with every DLC added. The multi-player is astonishing, you can spend hundreds of hours easily with this game.

I'm 1000hrs+ in and still play this game everyday. I love the PVP more than most other games, and the PVE content is also great. Would rate the game lower if i was a solo player, but with friends this game is near perfect. Destiny 2.0 comes soon and fixes all negative things I didn't like with the game.

To be perfectly honest before reading this, i am very close with somebody who works at Bungie. That being said Destiny is a bad game. I gave it an 8 though because it has real potential. When i look at destiny i see a game butchered, that could have been spectacular. The game as it stands is OK. But i write this review saying that you shouldn't give up hope. But i write this review saying that you shouldn't give up hope. Destiny can be a great game and a game worth investing in. I realize alot of people have lost interest, but i would suggest to new players, give it a chance at the next DLC and to old players who left i would say. At the very least pick up destiny 2.
    Pros-
    Its a fun multiplayer experience
    Awesome Sci Fi shooter
    Awesome co-op shooter
Great story...(dont hurt me... its there... just not in the game)
    Cons-
    Limited activities to do
    Scarce DLC
    Soundeffects could use work
broken mechanics (some subclasses are just blatently more broken)
    binding functionality
Just to elaborate on 2 of those
Pro- Great Story- A lot of people would give me a lot of hate for saying this but i have to disagree because I think it goes deeper than that. Sure, if you play through the game the story is pretty bad, but i see potential in it. For what it was going to be as well as what it could be. I'm more trying to convince you that this game has potential for the future than quality now.
Con- Binding Functionality- The end game content of destiny are called raids for the newbies out there. In these raids you're probably at some point going to use LFG to find our fill slots in your raid team. Whether these people accept you or not is entirely dependent on whether or not you have certain guns that aren't truly necessary but make the raid easier. This is my personal least favorite con, not just because elitism is bunk, but because they're a little right, the guns are not just the best option, they're almost the only option. I just wish the raids let you be your own kind of guardian. I just want to carry a trusty shotgun everywhere.
That is all i hope I have instilled a little hope in the probably no one who will read this.

Vanilla Destiny took a long time to evolve into what it was just before the Dark Below. New content was added regularly, loot was interesting, and there was stuff to do. The skill system is pretty thin, and for some reason they have remained pretty much as is since launch. That's disappointing, since there are already few skills to choose from, and half of them are pretty much useless.Vanilla Destiny took a long time to evolve into what it was just before the Dark Below. Spectacular gameplay, wonderful graphics, hours of content which is weekly updated, tons of weapons, an amazing open-world, different experience, online fun (competitive and co-operative) and extremely addictive. What else can i ask for? Sure, the story was a bit disappointing but everything else combined, i'd give the game a 10/10.

Destiny is one of those games that you get sucked into and never want to leave. I put hundreds of hours into the game in the first few months and felt great about it. If you enjoy shooters, MMO's, or just like to play video games then you must give this game a try, otherwise you might miss out on a game you will absolutely love!

This game is one of the highest quality FPS games I have ever played. The multiplayer matches are great and could be enough to keep you having all the fun you need. Activision succeeds in making this game comparable to the Call of Duty series in quality of multiplayer online PvP.

The gameplay mechanics and graphics are great! I never felt wonky or that I didn't have total control of what actions I wanted my character to do. Feels very smooth and is just a seamless shooter of the quality of any of the Halo games.

The story is the major issue. There isn't one, at least not one that's very accessible. Grimoire is where the story is unlocked, but for the normal person you won't want to go read dozens of cards to see more about the story, but there seems to be a rich world, very much so hidden.

The MMO portion also is something to get by. If you don't mind having to pay for DLC every few months in order to stay up to date with the game then this won't bother you at all, but if you don't keep up, or try to jump in late, then this will feel overwhelming.

The game has gone through many changes and upgrades, and seems to be improving in the places it was failing, but overall this is an amazing game.

Essentially excellent with friends, bland without them. It could be so so much more but there's still nothing quite like it. Upgrading my rating from an 7 to 8.5. The gunplay it superb but too many other things are lacking.

If you can forgive the very uninspired art style and level design, graphics and gameplay are good but everything else is completely lacking. FFIV is a better MMO,

If you can forgive the very uninspired art style and level design, graphics and gameplay are good but everything else is completely lacking. FFIV is a better MMO, Borderlines a better Co-Op game, and they're countless better SP and competitive MP FPS games out there. It feels as if Bungie was completely insecure in everything except the graphics and Halo-esq gameplay.

Being Bungie I expected an epic story but it's not. It's very bland with horrible voice acting. Word of advice to devs thinking of using very well-known actors with iconic TV/movie characters as voice actors in games is a good idea. It's not. When trying to create a new character don't use someone who constantly reminds me of someone else. All I hear is a completely bored Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister). (Same goes for you MGS - it sounds like the actors try and take the character seriously...but they can't)

Destiny tries to be several games in one but In the end Destiny is a pretty bad MMO, a horrible Single Player experience due to the bland story, level design and lack of set pieces or otherwise inspired graphics, and an average co-op game. Also, competitive MP can be had better elsewhere.

It tries to be the jack of all trades and excels at none. And given the content, level design, and scope of the game it hard to imagine that the majority of the 500 million budget went towards making the game and not to marketing.

The way I see it Destiny sells you 4 games for $70 (in Canada), but MMO's are free, the SP isn't worth anything, the CO-OP and Competitive MP are probably worth $29.99 each but neither game can compete with their better peers in each respective genre. All I picture when I play this game is that meme with the dog in a lab coat and glasses with the caption, "I have no idea what I'm doing", especially in terms of the the MMO and story elements.. That comes across here. They would have been better off making a Borderlands clone but with a great story... This game was not made with confidence, gameplay aside.

If your playing alone don't even bother with this game and don't expect to make any friends as it's impossible to communicate with people. If you have TWO buddies it can be fun, but guaranteed someone is going to get bored with the repetitive nature and stop playing

I'm really talking about Destiny The taken king, which is a flawless and extremely fun for a first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a wayI'm really talking about Destiny The taken king, which is a flawless and extremely fun for a first person shooter. It is definitely worth buying it is addicting, with multiple planets you can sink hours and hours into it. It is beautiful. Crucible is the most fun part, if you are low level you can still beat everyone. There are a bunch of bosses to fight and make you come back. It I see worth the money and you should by it.

Then it gets worse much worse. I continued to play almost until the end. Some of the new raids were ok, but just felt so meaningless. Destiny was never known for its story, but wow is it ever bad. I feel obligated to give it a good review as I had so much fun with it for a long time, but it probably doesn’t deserve this rating because of the bad dlc content. The base game is what I remember and what I enjoyed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Many people who give this a negative review or a mixed review are very crazy. I hate the feeling I get while thinking about their words. Thinking about one sentence or possibly even one word the Destiny haters typed will make me think the same. Forgetting about the things they typed is difficult. Not another word about them. This game is not bad at all in my opinion. Almost everything, if not then everything about the game is fantastic. I can't think about not playing it. Expand

The Destiny marathon of reviews begins with Destiny or as I like to call it: Destiny: The First Chapter. The First Chapter is what started it all for this series with great gameplay, beautiful graphics, a intriguing story, engaging characters, and overall, a great way to kick off Destiny into what it is today.

Taken King and Rise of Iron fixed many issues that the game had at launch and as it sits right now, anyone can hop in and have one of the most enjoyable experiences in the genre. The raids are unforgettable, the strike playlist with rotating modifiers are beyond enjoyable and the weapon / ability sandbox tuning that was left the way it was remains close to perfect.

The only faults that this game has is the unfortunate state that PvP was left in with how ammo economy functions. But if you're looking for a solely PvE game, then this one is a perfect 10/10 ignoring the issues plaguing PvP.

Destiny 2 has improved drastically on a lot of issues that Destiny 1 had, but it still fails to be as fun and replayable as Destiny 1 once was. One of my favorite games of all time.

The score reflects how the game currently is as of 6/12/2023.

What is most amazing of all is that despite its litany of weird little problems, Destiny is fantastic, its combat up there with the very best, the thrilling rhythm of its battles still not fading the 30th time through, and it has no single systemic problem that is not fixable. [Dec 2014, p.106]
