Destiny has an amazing framework set for a Game of the Year, but unfortunately lacks substance to reach such potential. Originally, I would have given this game a 7.5, but after the dlc and lack of proper updates, Bungie has shown incompetence in developing a game in this genre--especially since other games already exist in some form or another (Warframe being closest) within this genre for a couple years. It's as if they learned nothing with mmorpg-esque games. Because right now, the grind is incredibly boring. There is no randomness to maps or enemies like other grind games. And the RNG (random number generator) for loot is one of the worst in games.

Also, for a game that spews "social," there is no ingame chat to help with finding groups for modes that have no matchmaking. You have to go on your phone or pc, find somebody on an external site or forum, invite them to your party chat, then invite them again within the game. It's a horribly unproductive process. Also, there is no use for the most part to clans...yet.

The dlc (or "expansion" to Bungie) is regurgitated maps from the main game and mostly same weapons with just a new cover look. The story is still nonexistant except for on your pc or phone in grimoire cards.

Quite simply, the game is only good for maybe 60 hours unless you like to play the same, exact thing over and over again with little story and reward. If they added some depth to enemies and randomness to them--like Warframe, Diablo 3, or any other grind game--it would have helped tremendously, but they did not. You will literally fight the exact same scripted layout with maybe some minor, predetermined 'combat' modifiers.

Truthfully, I would recommend waiting till Destiny 2 to invest in this series cause you are not missing much...except that cash you wasted on this.

The 'Open World' parts of this game are lies, and are more like tiny areas of small crappy missions to do. The Crucible is fun, but with literally two types of game modes (Also add into the fact that if you don't have Taken King, you aren't going to be playing the cooler stuff) And Strikes don't hold your attention for very long. The content given at base value, the original 60 dollars is pathetic. So why is it a six? Because....I, did have fun with it. And that's something I can't deny about the game. I had a lot of fun with it for a lot of reasons. So, Destiny gets by with me with barely passing marks. A slightly above average FPS with MMO elements. Expand

As we all know, there really isn't a story. I've played it through multiple times and I've still no idea what is going on. The gameplay is good and graphics are very smooth. If you have friends that play it, it can be very social and it is extremely easy to play with others within your friend list. I think most people feel pretty similar to me that after pouring hours into this game...the suddenly hate it.

The integration of both an FPS and MMO styled game really started to peak my interest. The story was lacking substance and consistency through the entirety of the game, leaving me completely disappointed in the end. The raid system was fun for the most part, but there are constant bugs and glitches that keep ruining the efforts of a 6 or less person team that these people put time into beating. Many instances of these glitches were in The Dark Below expansion, where teams could "cheese" the end boss for easy gear. When they introduced the Hard mode of this expansion, the problems would consist, or be completely different. Enemies would not spawn, the boss would take no damage, fall off the map, randomly glitch into the safe areas, and ruin a team's raid.

The pvp system in the game is alright, consisting of the 3 different classes on a team clashing in different game modes. I find that the "supers" are unbalanced, leaving the hunter class with the edge overall. One shot kills pertain to the Golden Gun ability, leaving anyone caught in the fire dead, or the Arc-blade ability gives them close to invincibility with an over shield, one hit kill melee, and rapid movement (even in the air).

Overall, you can only progress so much through this game until there is nothing left for you to do. Exotics weapons only take so long after you play for a month, and then you have most of them obtained. The new level cap of 32 leaves public events, daily events, and sometimes even weekly events useless, considering you get materials you can no longer use with the new raid gear.

I agree with many users that this game is one that is forced to be played as Bungie wants you to, and after you do that much; the game is essentially pointless to continue playing. I appreciate what Bungie is attempting to do, and I feel that a 6 is pretty generous considering the lack of story, continuation of activities for maxed character, and balanced classes.

Destiny is one word, disappointing. The story- disappointing. The campaign- hoard mode simulator. Grinding- takes forever to get a single new weapon and the weapon you get does not even depend on the enemy itself.. But, the graphics, music, and the combat is great. But the classes are not diverse, the skill tree doesn't feel diverse, so overall, this game is a let down.

This game had huge potential to be amazing, but between the obvious piece by piece business model, lack of engaging story or characters, lack interesting game play (excluding pvp) and lack good level design (again, excluding pvp), Destiny is a mess that i don't plan to pay to have cleaned up.

For the good, I will say the soundtrack outshines that game play. It makes the boss battles feel somewhat epic. That is saying something since the actual game play usually is anything but. This is not to say they were bad, just predictable and repetitive. Other highlights are that the visuals are beautiful and the planets are well detailed, despite how linear they are. And finally the variety of weapons and armor adds an exiting layer to the shooter PVP aspect. On that note, PVP is fun, if an only if you work to get the gear to actually stand a chance.

For the bad, the story is atrocious. There is little back story, little explanation to any character's relevance, and little cohesive structure. Ideas are mentioned and dropped and focus seems to shift abruptly. The worlds amount to a circle with the individual segments being linear. All of the objectives in the story are the same: fight off X race while your ghost does Y task or fight X boss while it throws minions at you. The leveling of the gear is tedious and any leveling for the crucible, vanguard or any faction is tedious as well.

A special note needs to be said about the business model. Supposedly there is a 10 year contract between Activision and Bungie. One must question how much of the game was intentionally left out to be strung along versus how much upcoming DLC will be legitimately new (I am under the impression much of The Dark Below was withheld content.) In either case, Destiny is a fundamentally flawed empty shell on launch and any business model that strives to fill in the gaps of the original product with future products is not one I can condone. I do realize Destiny is the highest budgeted game ever; but that does make it right for Activision to adopt that model. Yes, games are expensive to develop and I fully understand DLC is needed for publishers to recoup the money; but by going this model, integrity is lost and hurts more than helps. If a game is legitimately good, people will buy it, DLC and all. If a game is marginal, you get shady forms of DLC and game editions. The problem is people will still buy it, enabling this practice. Destiny could have been phenomenal with some tweaks of the fundamental game play. I don't think this is anything any amount of DLC can rectify though. I for one don't plan to pay to find out.

The final boss is literally the same boss three times, and on top of that, a boss that was encountered earlier in the game. Item drops are completely random and serve no purpose. The cryptarch will decipher a legendary drop into an uncommon or rare drop, which makes absolutely no sense. One redeeming quality of the game is the PvP, which I felt was the best part of the game. It reminded me of all the fun that I used to have when I played the Halo games on the 360. But then again, I didn't pay $60 for a PvP experience. Raids are just a disappointment. Bosses are exactly the same from the campaign missions, and just becomes boring when you literally have to shoot at him for like an half an hour. It's not difficult, it's just boring as hell. Destiny was a game that I felt could have been the first big MMO for consoles, kinda like a WoW for PS4/XB1, but they dropped the ball and no one I know even touches this game anymore. I'd rent it first before paying the full price for this game. Expand

Have you ever played a game that kept you in the mood to keep going, and to continue the game until you got bored of it? Well this is what describes Destiny.

    Basics:
Destiny is a first person shooter developed by Bungie and published by Activision. The point of the game is to level up your character, making you stronger the more you play, you fight monsters in a post-apocalyptic atmosphere. You have a "Ghost" companion helping you out (voiced by Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage), who tells you the story on how the alien race you face in the game has taken over the universe, and that's where it goes in terms of story telling. The game seems to throw you in without giving you enough information on what you need to know about this alien race you are facing.

    Gameplay:
At the very start you have the option to choose whatever race you want to play, there is an option what gender you would like to be. You can spoof up your character by adding some color and miscellaneous items. After creating your hero you are awoken by your new companion robot, you are immediately asked to go find a weapon and a ship to go to the main town of the game.
Once arriving at the main town of the game you are asked to explore more of the once populated Earth, the missions given are different, they all take place in the same land, but different. There are the main story missions which you can do to explore some of the later planets farther in the game, and there are side missions. Side missions can be found by selecting "Patrol Mission" on the map screen, you earn awards and level up the more you do. The down side to the patrol missions is most of them are the same type of mission like, "Go kill these guys" or "Kill this boss" or "Find a specific object", and sense this game involves around real life time, these missions will repeat the next day, it just gets old after a while.
There are missions offered in the main town, you can do bounties for extra loot and level up faster, which is the fastest way to leveling up. The bounties are all different, but you will very likely get some of the same ones you had from the previous day, this is another repetitive feature to the game. You can buy more equipment by spending the currency that is dropped by the species you face.

    Multiplayer:
This is a big factor in the game, other players will be exploring just like you are. You can team up with other players in the over world, there is also a PvP option, but that requires Playstation Plus if you have Plasystation, or Microsoft Gold if you have Xbox. The PvP option (called "The Crucible") has different modes like capture the flag, deathmatch, capture the point, etc. You start off waiting to find players to play with, it can take a while, but you will eventually get into the game. Depending on whatever game mode you picked you will have to do the objective to win the game.
The gameplay itself is overall fun, but again, it just gets old after awhile. Depending on what level you are when you start, you will always play against players that have a higher level than you. The game encourages you to keep playing by giving you crucible marks and other loot after each match. The loot you obtain can range from a low level to a legendary level (being the highest rated level), you can also spend some of the crucible marks you are awarded at the crucible shop at the main town.
Overall the multiplayer mode is just another way to convince players to continue playing the game, it is not a bad idea, but the fact you need membership is just the downside to this feature.
There are also strikes, strikes are side missions you can do to level up your character. Strikes can only be played with 3 players, any players less the harder the strike will be. You fight your way through with the random players you are assigned to work with, each strike has an objective, the objective you are given will depend on how hard it is. At the end of each strike you will obtain loot and experience to level up your character.

    Final Opinion:
Overall Destiny is fun and visually stunning, but the game gets boring after reaching level 20, which is the maximum you can go, you can obtain equipment to go beyond that level. I would say the only reason to keep playing is if you are addicted to the multiplayer if you have no other FPS Multiplayer game you have. Destiny tries so hard by adding new things to the game, but it just does not work, sure the expansions sound cool, it just is not enough to keep players entertained. Destiny's gameplay is like Borderlands, just remove the open world aspect and you have something that is less entertaining. I only recommend Destiny if you are looking for something to have fun for a while or have friends that play this game, otherwise skip, there is really no reason to buy a game that is only good for the first 2 weeks of gameplay.

When it comes to game play destiny is one of the best. The shooting, the NPC's, and the game play itself is amazing. I don't feel like there is major bugs (anymore), and the small open worlds are easy to navigate, and full of things to do. The NPC's are still challenging even when you max at your level, and they have enough AI to make it fun to shoot them.
Another good aspect of this game is PVP. It is fun, and even lower level players can enter the arena and do fairly decent. The only complaint I have for this is that it seems gear almost has no meaning when fighting other players. I was one hit killed by a level 2 player the other day, and with the equipment I possess this should be impossible, but I understand Bungie has to even things out, and this is a minor issue, so I will not put it as a complete negative.
Now on the bad side of things...and there is a lot. First, there is practically no story line to this game, and the small tidbits you get make no sense. It is almost as if an entirely different game was made, and then someone went in there and cut it all up; keeping only certain pieces of the original. Now I have read and watched several reviews, and they all seem to state the Destiny we now see, is not the Destiny originally planned, and the lack of story line spawns from a need for the company to make money from DLC. Which is of course shameful if true.
Second, the game is horribly repetitive. Even as the DLC's came out it was the same reputation missions as before. Plus there was no extra story give with the DLC's. I am not even sure what the point of Dark Below was. It didn't educate me on the Hive, nor did it do anything to make me further understand why I was fighting them...or what their purpose of fighting me was for that matter. Really it just seemed like I was fighting for loot and that was it. House of Wolves seem to continue this trend, by making a few missions without explaining why you are doing them, or why the fallen are even a threat. What was the point of cutting up the game for DLC if you weren't going to further explain aspects of the game? Was it only about loot?
Third, the drops by NPC's are laughable. I have spent countless hours on this game to get somewhat decent equipment, however none of it came from NPC drops. All of it came from either Xur, exoctic bounties, PVP, or Nightfall end of mission rewards. I have never once; in my countless hours of playing, received a legendary drop from a NPC. This is also true of the people I play the game with. Why even have loot drop if nothing good ever comes out of it?
It seems to me (and for many), that this game could have been one of the greats, but corporate greed destroyed what might have been one of my all time favorite games. I hope this changes in the future, or I will never buy or play another Destiny sequel or DLC.

Bungie expects us to go on the Destiny website to READ lore which should be in the game. They can't take out vital chunks of info and plonk it on a website which you have to UNLOCK after playing the game itself. What!?
On the other hand, the gun-play was epic. You can see the structure of the gameplay is ultimately Halo with a different skin which is just awesome!
Starter levelling up was great, completing bounties and unlocking a new upgrade was amazing- Every time you unlocked an upgrade you felt proud. Unfortunately, after reaching level 20, it became a bit repetitive.
Among lots of stupid stuff Bungie has included, two stand out: light level and engrams. Light level was just boring but whose idea was it to get items which wasn't for your class from legendary and exotic engrams!? Also, if I worked hard enough to get a legendary engram, I deserve a legendary item, not a uncommon piece of gear!
The online was nothing new but with gunplay it was awesome.
I wish Bungie would make a Destiny remake this time resembling the original story ( Bungie's writer for Destiny, Joe Staten, left before the game was made) . The campain now in Destiny is a total joke. Bear in mind this is the creative people who developed Halo. Gosh this game affected Bungie's reputation. They've took out key parts of the story that are probably going to appear in future DLC. What!? I payed £40 for a game, not for part of a game. So much potential wasted...
The graphics were nothing to be excited about. In some places the textures looked horrible.
Last and definitely least, the Random Number Generator. This is by far the unfair and unorganised system EVER! Your rewards aren't based o skill, there based on luck. WHAT!? How dare they... For example if I came first in a game of control with 30 kills and a K/D ratio of 9.70 can get nothing and the player who slayed one Guardian can get a legendary rocket launcher!
    Bungie, get your act together.

The final verdict is a 6/10. It would be a 3/10 if the gunplay wasn't so good!
    Peace out. (:

Cons- Poor customization, lack of gun models, repetitive game play (both missions and strikes are very repetitive with little variation), very short main story line, very little lore/backstory/explanation for why anything has happened or is happening (at the end of the main story line I still have next to no idea what or who the main antagonist of the game is supposed to be, why the enemy factions are here, who several characters were, what happened to different locations before my arrival, etc.), jump ships literally appear only in cut scenes and loading screens, the high pricing of DLC that was likely content that was cut from the original game.

While there are a few good things about Destiny that make it very playable such as the great combat mechanics, aesthetics and soundtrack, the game falls flat because of it's tiny storyline that will last you a few hours, the repetitive nature of missions that revolve around the "go here, kill those, scan this, kill the boss/waves of enemies" formula for literally every mission, and a complete lack of coherent story telling. Shortly after the beginning of the game, an NPC literally says that he could explain significant events or useful story the player, but decides not to. There's just been no effort to help the player understand the world we're in which totally kills any immersion, constantly reminding the player that they're playing a game. A lot of pre release footage would indicate that the world used to be a lot more open but significant changes (likely due to Activision holding up the contract) occurred before release that make it seem like the game was heavily re designed a few months before release.

It make me think that somebody hired a fantastic development team to built a beautiful world, but then assigned a creative director that just wrote a first draft filled with ideas that sound cool, but then never improved on them, leaving a game that looks great on the outside but is filled with plot holes and half thought out ideas.

It seems that you can play the entire base game from a freely available demo which will save your character for if you ever buy the retail version, so if you want to play Destiny, just download the demo because you can get everything you want out of it for free and without having to pay for any overpriced DLC packs.

    The presentation is also ok.

This game still has positives though,

    +The character customization

    +Some nice cutscenes

    +Interesting backgrounds.

But the game still disappoints for a game that uses 'Next generation first person shooter' as a slogan.

    First Person Shooter Aspect

Can't complain, it was done well. Coming from a series that spawned Halo, you know that the shooter aspect was going to be good. The controls are really responsive and give you the option to tweak the aiming speed etc. The balancing of weapons, well its a double edge sword because people will have different opinions and complaints on why their favourite gun has been nerfed and the gun they use least is OP. All I can say that it's a plus that Bungie have regular updates and monitor the usage of each gun and make changes if need be.

    RPG Aspect

Character creation is meh. 3 different species Human, Robot or Ascended Human. No difference between them apart from the type of dance emote they do. Could of gave them species perks to adapt to the players playstyle Eg. Elder Scrolls. The classes IMO are good, adopting the Hunter (ThiefRogue/DPS), Titan (Tank/Defence Support) and Warlock (Mage/Heals/Support). After the Taken King they employed another Class type to interchange them especially giving the Hunter a much needed support special.

After the Taken King Expansion, they've finally got the levelling correct. Getting good gear is still a big, long grind. The rewards on Crucible are still pathetic where 1st gets the **** gear compared to last. My friends joke around saying to play well but not come first to get good loot.

    Replayability

I'm still playing it whenever a new update comes in. A lot of players gave up on it, which I can understand. But I have a close knit of gamer friends who play just for fun as the Co Op in this game especially the Raids are second to none...apart from guess what?...the loot drops : ( (endless grinding!!!). Don't have any friends to game with? Look around for Clans, there are lots to choose from and most are very helpful.

Overall, a 6 praising the shooter component, the gear (even though its a grind to collect), Co Op and PvP. regular updates and events (the Sparrow Racing Event was a good change). I don't really play it anymore, but will jump on when my friends are on. That 10 year plan they have for this game...I don't think so.

    - 1 To most story missions that have been recycled over and over
    - 1 To the endless grind of loot (they should take pointers from Division and Borderlands)
    - 2 To the reward system on Crucible (PvP)

You buy the base game, finish the campaign within a few hours and are then told that "this isn't it... buy the DLCs NOW!!". The campaign is OK and the mulitplayer is just your standard multiplayer. Regarding the post story mode content, that is where the game really performs and I think this was their main focus when creating this game, because the story is so vague that you need to view these "grimoirs" on a separate site to read more into the lore. When I first bought Destiny it was shortly after the first DLC, "The Dark Below". I knew the game had flaws, but the visuals were, and still are great. The shooting mechanics are also really well thought out and because it's a slot machine style game with so many things to collect, upgrade and be rewarded, I kept playing it for for such a long time. However, the novalty soon wore off and I stopped playing it all together until the most recent DLC, The Taken King, game out (but again, I stopped playing after about a week). So far there has been 3 DLCs with the 3rd being the first DLC to add significant content to this game, including a new campaign. What Destiny is now is what it should've been back when it first came out in 2014. What is most disappointing is that this game now costs less than £40 brand new in GAME including all the expansions, when the base game alone cost more than this when I first purchased it. Only now is Destiny a complete game and that's why I'm giving it a 6/10. If you enjoy hours upon hours of grinding, micro transactions for emotes and repeating the same quests over and over, than this is the game for you. Expand

The story and universe is poorly established and barely there even compared to most FPS games and especially to rpg/mmo's. Great voice talent like Peter Dinklage are totally wasted on this rough draft story. There are only 3 planets and the moon to explore, all of which consist of tiny maps that while pretty, feel empty and lifeless. You can blow through the whole story in a day easily and reach level 20 with little effort. Endgame is what kills Destiny as the loot system for PVE and PVP is chained to a RNG. All you can do is grind the same handful of multiplayer modes/maps or grind the same 5-6 strike missions till you want to puke. There is just so little to do, it's missing social features like trading and chat, and the loot system is an absolute (and literal) joke. Yes they may address these issues somewhat with patches and DLC but that is a long ways off at best. Right now at least, I'm done with Destiny, in fact I've already traded it back in to best buy. I wanted this so badly to be good but it's just...so...meh....

There's definitely a major lack of imagination and poor scripting knowledge to the point, of this being one of my biggest disapointment for the past 2 years of gaming.

Comparing it to id Software's Rage(2011), Destiny(2014) certainly isn't an improvement and it being released as a next-gen video game seriously makes me doubt if next-gen consoles and their Devs have what it takes for the next 5-8 years to be on par with the aggressive and fast growing hardware of a Personal Computer..

The mechanics are standard for anyone familiar with Halo multiplayer with some twists. Combat is familiar with responsive weapons each with their own feel and super moves that add variation and enjoyment. Movement is easy with a combination of gliding, double jumping, and star wars style speeders. And you have the ability to customize you're guardian with three classes and an array of visual aesthetics. But when you get to the heart of it, aesthetics and visual appeal are what Destiny is all about. It looks good and feels good at first until you realize what's missing. This is highlighted by the ship you fly. You can buy new ships which you can use to... distract yourself from the frequent load screens you'll be experiencing. You also have your choice of weapons to choose from: a 5 round revolver (why would guns evolve to less efficient?), a semi-auto rifle, or a single action rifle. Three distinct main weapon types is all. But wait, there are the special weapons: the overpowered shotgun, an efficient sniper rifle, or the almost useless in multiplayer fusion rifle. Plus a rocket launcher or machine gun for a heavy weapon. You cannot customize these, merely unlock perks already loaded to certain weapons, so if you like the way a low level weapon's scope felt, it may take a while to get that feeling again. There are a few multiplayer modes but only and handful of stages and no character progression. To be accurate, your multiplayer character is the same as your single player character. You do get multiplayer specific marks to buy high level gear but there are definitely a limited number of sets and high level players begin to look very similar. Get a good shotgun and you can easily dominate or you'll find yourself waiting by the heavy ammo spawn because they always drop at the same locations. When you do well in multiplayer you may not be rewarded with a drop. The rewards are based on how often you play, not necessarily how well. As far as the single player story, Peter Dinklage is the highlight and even he can tend to drone on (pun intended). The missions are highly repetitive. For one, you start are the same points depending on the world you're on. You use your speeder to fly back to familiar spots, crawl through a cave filled with the same enemies throughout the rest of the world you're on, then mow down wave after wave (and sometimes a giant boss with a longer life bar) while your Ghost phases into objects to download the next file to explain something that doesn't make complete sense unless you go to Bungie's website to read the extensive lore. To be fair, the lore IS extensive, but presented in such a passive manner that it's largely unappreciated. It highlights how awkwardly the story is presented. You're highly customized guardian is largely silent and always emotionless. His or her story is fairly mundane for a game called Destiny. Lastly, the most egregious error is that Destiny is released as a game that's DLC maintained. The game wasn't complete at the time of release or even adequately tested. There's story content promised for a subscription fee and multiplayer content, weapons, and drops are all still being adjusted and nerfed. Wanting to adjust mechanics and gameplay to improve the experience is one thing, but Destiny's creators seem to lack a clear endgame (again pun intended). The events are admirable attempts to keep people playing mirrored after ME3's multiplayer challenges. Unfortunately, rewards require hours of participation to yield significant rewards and the replay value is lower than COD or BF because multiplayer lacks customization or valuable rewards. It's an attempt to mix the Halo multiplayer experience with that of other first person shooters that results a moderately enjoyable, unmemorable, and fairly unrewarding experience. At level 28 (of 30) with the campaign finished, most of the group raids run, and hours of multiplayer are under my belt, I'm profoundly disappointed with this new IP. Many are defending Destiny by saying it's going to get better or more content is coming or it's unfair to give a bad score because it's not finished. I think it's only right to give Destiny a score for what it is and not what it can be or what we or Bungie want it to be. Expand

Boss fights aren't too impressive - minimal mechanics and bosses are more like giant bullet sponges which doesn't make for an epic fight, unless you feel that spending 10-15 minutes shooting at something is challenging. Perhaps in 2 years we will see this game in a more content rich vein but the lowest common denominator gameplay needs desperate attention. Every encounter is dead in the water due basic mob behaviour.

Here is a list that just scratches the surface:
    - Repetitive, linear mission design. Lacks variety.
    - Boss fights are all the same: Deplete the health of a bullet sponge, while ADDs keep spawning. This never changes, regardless of level.
    - Unskippable cut scenes.
    - No way to control music and sound effects volume.
    - Over reliance on RNG.
    - No sense of progression at endgame. Level cap relies on RNG.
    - No established social system. Limited voice chat options. Forces you to meet other players out of the game.
    - No matchmaking for the game top challenges. Paired with the last point (forcing players to step out of the game to meet other players), it makes key game elements, like playing the raid, an inconvenience.
    - You have to find key points of the story out of the game.
    - Enemies spawning at the same spots, at the same time, always. Many other immersion-killing mechanics.
    - Hub area NPCs limited to vendors.
    - Open world lacks discoverability. No reasons to go off the beaten path.
    - Grinding. Hours upon hours of boring gameplay spent farming materials.
    - Limited character customization. At endgame, gear customization is reduced to selecting a limited amount of shaders. You can choose between a few abilities and the weapons you use. That's it.
    - Weapon customization is limited to choosing between a couple of set features.
    - Amount of content just barely acceptable. This must be a decision based on greed rather than incompetence, since the DLC with additional content, was advertised, and for sale, even before the game came out.

I'm just getting started here. The bottom line is, Destiny is a wasted opportunity. The excellent gameplay mechanics, visual and sound design, and fun PvP, saves this game from being a 2/0 or even a 0/0. Those are my two cents.

Their worlds have always been packed with a very focused and unique style. I remember just staring at little corners of levels in Halo CE, and really feeling the care and passion that the developers must have had for their game. The story and environments felt like more than just typical FPS narrative for the time; for some reason, I actually cared about what was happening in this universe (so much so, that I ended up reading a good portion of the Halo novels).

We all knew that Destiny would not be Halo. What I didn't know however, was that Destiny wouldn't even have Halo's level of soul and identity. I feel nothing for the world of Destiny. On the surface, its ideas are intriguing. The Traveler's interactions with humanity and the events that come after all seem to set the stage for what should be an engaging story. The art style, while not exceptionally unique, does manage to add a certain personality and look to the game. Destiny however ends up doing almost nothing with its own setting and visuals.

My character is a faceless nobody with almost no presence in the world. Every time he spoke a line of dialogue aloud, I was almost surprised. Why even bother giving a voice actor to such an uninspired and weak character? He seems to have no real motivation, no personality. Only useless comments and the occasional snarky one-liner to his Ghost. Dinklage himself gives an incredibly boring performance, but it's one that I don't think I can entirely blame him for. It's clear that bad (or maybe even absent?) directing must have had some role to play here, and the writing itself doesn't do him any favors.

The story feels dead. It's lonely. Each story mission felt more and more like some banal task for an astronaut janitor to take care of. You go to a location (that you've probably seen multiple times before), and you press square. Dinklage mumbles something about how he's using space magic to learn something about some other thing. Then you fight off waves of enemies until he's done. At the the end of the mission, Dinklage reveals that he has indeed, figured out where you need to go for your next mission. Rinse and repeat. Why is my character doing all this? To fight the Darkness. What's the darkness, and why are they bad? Well, because they are attacking the Light. Destiny's story is trying hard to combine futuristic sci-fi with mysticism, but it ends up coming off as incredibly simplistic and shallow. What lore there actually is in the universe is hidden away on Bungie.net in the form of Grimoire cards. Perhaps Destiny could have benefited from including this fiction in the actual game.

The combat is fun enough. It feels like a further evolution of Halo, with armor abilities replaced by space magic. The customization systems within the game give you some amount of control over your character, but nowhere near the levels seen in a Diablo or even a Borderlands. Gear comes with a defense stat, and sometimes cooldown reduction for your abilities. There are some additional gear effects, but they're often not truly interesting enough to really change how you play the game.

In conclusion, my biggest emotion in reaction to Destiny is pure surprise. I was expecting a Bungie game. What I got was something that feels hollow. It's as if something tore the heart and soul out of Bungie, and the withered husk was forced to produce a triple-A game. If that sounds harsh or dramatic, it's probably because my second biggest emotion right now is disappointment. Ever since the Halo franchise was handed off to 343, I've been incredibly curious and optimistic about Bungie's future. Destiny held the promise of even more greatness for the company, and the gamers who loved their work. Destiny does not hold up to that expectation. Being led through the various environments of Destiny, I did not feel the same wonder and curiosity I felt while walking around even just the bridge of the Pillar of Autumn in Halo.

Shoot the weak spot, hide and move when there are many enemies, use your ghost, protect him , kill boss and repeat. Loot drops seem to be completely random and often there is almost no reward for what felt like a major battle. PVP is solid but uninspiring and after 20 or so hours you will be bored unless you have no life and are ok to grind the same stuff over and over. Even the classes do not feel very different form another. I really wish I could say more positive things but everything this game could have been it is not. The core game itself is where it comes to a screeching halt as you drudge through extremely repetitive "quests" and "scenarios" which take their toll fairly quickly. The landscape itself is fairly barren and desolate with not much at all to give any feeling of it being "alive". Bungie professes that the game doesn't truly "start" until level 20. However, at level 20 it's just more of the same repetitive gameplay and recycled locations with a mere "illusion" of variety.

It's a shame really as this game had potential to be something really special and give undeniable proof of Bungie's genius as a developer. Seeing Destiny's final delivery and presentation makes me wonder just how "lucky" Bungie had been with their Halo franchise. Maybe, MS had more to do with it's success than we may think.

To summarize, I wouldn't really recommend Destiny to friends or anything, but, I wouldn't shout out any warnings to avoid either. It's just an average shooter with a pseudo large scale scope to give the illusion of depth and involvement.

Yes the graphics are pretty, especially on a 10 year old PS3, but it's still a very repetitive shooter, where you're supposed to shoot tons of spawned enemies.
To add more to the insult, this is on a console, where aiming is painfully crippled, compared to a PC.
If they indeed wanted to focus as much on consoles, they should have though the core mechanics of the gameplay through a little bit more...
I am happy to change my score and the game is likely to improve over time, but at the moment, there is no reason to rush out and pay the premium for a launch title.

Destiny is not an awful game. However, it is far from good, and all things considered it is likely one of the biggest letdowns in my entire gaming lifetime. I want to be having fun, but I simply am not.

Let's start with the positives to mollify the dissonant fans trying to justify their purchase and hype:
+ The lore itself, strictly the lore, is fantastic. See negatives for why this was a horribly missed opportunity.
+ The music is engaging, I think I may pick up the OST regardless of the game itself.
+ The gameplay itself does feel satisfying at first, it only sours when you realize this is *all* there is.

And now, sadly, the laundry list of negatives that led to my score:
    - The story might as well not be there. I'm serious. I have played RPGs with the budget of Destiny's daily donut allowance that had better stories than this. Six missions into the game I realized I still had no idea what I was doing, why I should care, or who anyone was. That is COMPLETELY unacceptable for a high school writing project, let alone a game that cost 500 million dollars. People are saying it's like Mass Effect. *Please*. From the get-go in Mass Effect, and indeed any RPG worth its salt, you feel like you're part of a greater story and constantly have a feeling of drive and motivation. Destiny's motivation: to slog through 30 hours of gameplay to reach level 20 where supposedly the actual "game" begins.

    - Several big name voice actors were hired for this project, the biggest of which was Peter Dinklage to play your personal "Ghost". I have to say, the only person more bored with the game during my playthrough was Peter Dinklage. Every single line he gave was basically flat and uninspired, and I really don't blame him for this at all--the script he was given was piss poor.

    - Missions are beyond formulaic. I've played games purported to be formulaic. I even enjoyed Dragon Age II's original, crappy missions because at least I felt like I had a sense of purpose. Destiny's missions all boil down as follows: short exposition from Dinklebot during the opening loading screen that tells you why you should care, even though there's no setup so everything is out of the blue. Then you get dumped into the starting area which is identical between all missions on that planet. You go to your target, constantly activating Dinklebot to find your disappearing waypoint. You may run into monsters far above your level because you took the *wrong* direct path to your target and get splattered. Then you kill a bunch of stuff, reach a limited-respawn zone, then kill a bunch of stuff while Ghost hacks something. You kill the bullet-sponge boss, get a 30-second countdown, get 1-2 pieces of randomized loot at the end, go back to the tower.

    - PvP is a mess. Everyone's been harping on about that so I won't go much further.

    - For such a social game, there are several extremely conspicuous blunders that made them gamebreakers for me. For one, given the game is very clearly balanced for Fireteam play rather than solo, joining and inviting to Fireteams is *extremely* roundabout. Overall, during my time I sent out maybe 40 invites to Fireteams (and made my own public), and I had *one* person actually join for a few minutes. There's no local chat, *two* emotes, and so few people are in the shard/instance of your planet that odds are most people will be over-leveled or under-leveled compared to you.

    - Apparently the game only really opens up close or at level 20. I don't see how anyone can offer this as an excuse. I refuse to pay 60 dollars and 30 hours of my life on the promise that it gets better later on. Endgame is what should *keep you coming back*, not what motivates you. It baffles me how this can be offered as an excuse, as what this says is "we acknowledge that the leveling is **** the story is uninspired, and the socialization is poor."

Of course, many who praise the game accuse people like me of hating gear grind, of hating FPS/RPG hybrids, of all sorts of ad hominem things. Son, I was grinding gear in Diablo while you were being potty trained. RPGs and shooters are my gaming passion, and given how much I was promised for Destiny, it is one of the biggest let downs of all gaming time for me. It's not a bad game--it's a competent shooter. However it's laughable how Activision and Bungie are planning a ten year development cycle for this game. Unless there are serious changes (and the story is retconned and rewritten, which we all know won't happen) this game is just going to be another fizzle-out like Titanfall and Firefall.

Ok, I understand that the focus of Destiny it's the multiplayer, I mean... I THINK IT IS.. because same after play several hours, the history of the game continues so vague as was in the very beginning.
PVP it is the best part of the game, have its moments of fun, but the overall experience in my opinion, is which the game is very unbalanced.
After play some matches on PS4, I came back to my PS3 to play Killzone 3, where I had a VERY better experience.

Too much deja vu for me, having played Halo, Borderlands, and Mass Effect extensively.

Here is exactly why. The game has precisely zero soul. It has bland, paint-by-numbers environments that look pretty but have no gravitas. The multiplayer is lifeless in terms of communication; I played for a good while and it didn't pick up. Thing is, even the moments when it did, it all resulted in the same thing - shooting at stupid, mechanical enemies with the same movement patterns over and over again. The lack of imagination in the AI is frightening given the budget and hype this game has had, and particularly the extended beta.

Biggest flaw, as a predominantly PC gamer, is the 30fps. Compared to shooters on the PC, the drop from 60fps is so noticable as to give you a minor headache. Yes, the barren environments are nice to look at it crisp HD and pop-in isn't an issue, but none of that matters with the overall jerkiness of movement 30fps offers.

Load times are horrendous - you're talking one minute plus each time. I wondered whether it was just my copy, but no, it's universal.

Gunplay is stiff and lacking intuitiveness. Again, I can see what they were going for with a "realistic" approach to movement, but it just baffles when you're hands-on with it. The campaign mode barely extends beyond what Titanfall offers; I'll admit this may be harsh and the game may open up considerably, but the lack of story and involvement of character here is worrying. Not once did I feel an integral part of this universe, and not once was I struck by any semblance of originality in this title.

Customisation is good, but it is in no way, shape or form an MMO or even an RPG; the closest I can describe it is akin to an action RPG like Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning bundled with a half arsed Halo.

What Bungie have tried to do here is commendable; reinvent the wheel and add a twist to the ridiculously oversaturated FPS genre, and I'm 100% sure that there will be gamers who lap up every Halo, and Call of Duty and Battlefield who will be delighted with this game and think it's offering them something different. But what Bungie have actually achieved is a middle of the road, pretty first person shooter which many people will be bored of inside four hours and won't feel the need to go beyond that, and will trade it in en masse, which is a shame, because it's just a fine tune away from being a solid game.

As it stands, Destiny joins Titanfall and Watch Dogs as games that aren't "bad", but it hasn't defined the new generation of consoles. The wait goes on for the true Metal Gear Solid/PS1 game changer for the PS4/XB1.

    The Review: Indepth

Story: Extremely poor.. It's disjointed, and doesn't make any sense. Spontaneously after ages of being sieged by the "darkness" (whatever that is) all the stuff is going down now? I mean seriously... The enemy has just suddenly decided to steal some info they've had in their territory for ages... The story line is filled with this stuff. It's as if it was written at the last minute by the programmers themselves.... You can tell they wrote it in reverse. "We want the players to kill 3 waves of enemies lets have them defend a computer (which cannot be destroyed).. Wait we used that 3 times... Ok lets have the players defend a alien computer! GOOD IDEA GUYS. *High Five's all around. *

The story is poorly scripted. I feel bad for Peter Dinklage. He's told to say "It's just past all those Devils" when there is only one Devil... Not plural... singular.... "I'm picking up a signal and it's not Cabal" When all you face next is Cabal....

The alien races fight each other and you, but there is no reason why they do this. You just have to accept it as is. Most of the story is basically just noise that plays as you do the same missions over and over. Then you finish, and then replay the missions over and over to earn Levels of Vanguard/cryptarch/Dread Orbit... etc. for no reason at all. You get full access to everything at level 2/3 so my level 30 Cryptarch is simply to get the 'level up bonus' which are items I scrap.

The Loot: Meh... Some of it is fun, but most of it is just junk to scrap. Infact I scrap 99+% of everything I find. It's hard to find amour that gives you the bonus you want in Ammo carry capacity for the guns you use. Sure you have boots that give you Scout rifle ammo increase but then it comes with Shotgun... You don't use a shotgun.. So you find one that gives you sniper ammo, but the other one is auto rifle...

and the 'aesthetic' items.. cloaks for hunter. Sash, or bonds do nothing. a level 15 one that is common is the same as a rare one at level 20... Not even the ability to infuse a style you like with anything... A wasted slot.

the shaders... Neon ones... Sure works well for multiplayer to stand out like a beacon... I have 2 that resemble cammo of a grey and green variety. I get hit less using them. So they are the only ones I use. I scrap the rest.

MultiPlayer: The strikes are not bad, but repetitive. On the PS4 I have 6 it rotates between. You may or may not talk to the people on your team but there is no reason for it. You are just rushing it as fast as you can. Most of my friends don't play Console games, the few that do either have Xbox One or don't have Destiny on the PS4. So I have to solo everything where there isn't matchmaking.

I tried to find a few groups to do the Vault Raid with, but to no avail. If you make it clear you want to do it you may get invited to the groups throwing out invites on a 3rd party website, but you have a better chance of being kicked from the fire team that being on it. So I haven't even tried to do the Vault except for the early stages when I could exploit to the 3rd area.

    Missions:
Why even bother with them... It's only Kill X monsters, Travel to Y position and stand still for 10 seconds, or Deploy ghost and let it take a snapshot. That's it. Nothing else.

Group Special Missions are: Kill Monster X, or Kill Groups of monsters at Location Y. That's it...

Music: Awesome music. Really. They did a great job.

Visuals: Really good. Levels and environment are the best, vehicles, and aliens are so-so. Your hunter... Faces look so-so.

Controls: Excellent. Very intuitive, smooth and glitch free.

I give the game a 6 because of the last few points. Otherwise it would be a 4 or lower. The last few points really save the day. You don't get frustrated by the basic mechanics, just with the story/repetitiveness of it.

First of all the game "plays" very well. The Halo heritage is very much present, where close combat, dodging and weaving are integral to the experience to a larger degree than in many other shooters. It's a fast paced and very satisfying way to play an FPS(in my humble opinion at least). The visuals are nice, from a technical standpoint it's nothing revolutionizing, but it's still very pretty. The music is gorgeous and often helps kick moments in the game up a notch.

    The Bad:
All of the above only get you so far though. There isn't much in the way of story or variety. It's largely moving from point A to point B, often through the same re-used maps. As it's designed for multiplayer you never really get the heroic moments you would in a tighter singleplayer experience. And when it lacks the soul and constant banter of games like Borderlands there just isn't much left. Everything you have at that point is grind, and when loot and gear is sparse as well when compared to games like Borderlands and Diablo the experience drags on even more.

The online aspects of the game also feel odd and uneven. It's an always online game, but outside of playing pvp or with friends it feels largely superfluous as you only ever share open zones with a handful of people who usually mind their own business.

It is perhaps early to say where this game is headed, but I kinda wish I could have gotten my money back for now. My time is better spent on other things than this game in its current state.

-RPG aspect of leveling and getting gear
-Different classes add new strategy to PVP and co-op
-Co-op/fire teams make the game better
-More content post leveling. Having the strike missions and bounties gives me good reason to play the game after the so called 'story' of the game

    Cons:
-PVP balance is not that balanced. While damage is normalized between players, abilities aren't. A level 20 player is going to have a lot more abilities on their armor and class than someone who is level 3, who can't even double jump.
-Getting gear is hard. I'm not saying it needs to be super easy but at the point it is now, people are leaving the game because the algorithm that gives gear is just too stringent. Bungie can learn from D3 where they kept upping the percentage of rare drops and reducing the randomness of the items
-Lackluster story. There could be SO MUCH potential for the story but nothing gets explained. Who are the awoken and exo? Where do they come from? Who is the traveller? Why is it just a ball? What is the darkness? Can't just be the fallen or the Vex or whoever else we fight because they fight each other too
-For an MMO type game, it lacks a lot of MMO aspects like trading between players and expansive world. We are only given portions of each planet we're on. I'd rather one FULL world than 4 partial worlds. But that's just me. I do still wish the Earth had more to it. After the destruction of Earth, the last place I care about is RUSSIA of all places.

All in all, this is a decent game. I'm still playing it because I want one of each class and because it's a good game overall, but I have to say that it has a lot of repairs.

For the first 15 hours or so I would have probably rated this game at 9 but after that the repetitive nature of the game really kicks in and drags the rating right down. The combat in the game is fun but once you have killed 3000 odd enemies it really just blurs in to one long grind. The strike bosses are insanely boring after you have killed them 20 times and I find myself struggling to stay interested after firing 2000 bullets in to their head or stomach. the game gets pretty intense when you are the last guardian left but that's only because you REALLY REALLY REALLY don't want to have to go through another 10 minutes on firing guns at a bullet sponge.

I've yet to experience the raids which may be really exciting but getting the gear to do the raid is just way too painful and boring. I have little faith that they will be anything but firing 10000 bullets at some big fat slow enemy.

The crucible...well if you like trading one shots with shotguns or super powers then the game is definitely for you. Personally I grew tired of this type of gameplay back in the Unreal Tournament days.

The storyline isn't that memorable, to be honest I can't really remember what it was about and I only just played it last week. Something about Tyrion hacking random computers in various places, you would think with all the hacking he does he would be bloody quicker about it. Insert waves of random mobs while he hacks something over and over plus a miniboss and you have nearly every mission in the game. There's also some big floating planet which doesn't seem to have much impact on your experience but he's important supposedly.

The loot is probably the biggest disappointment for me in this game. Currently with all gear at level 20 there hasn't been much excitement at potential upgrades. I have found 4 legendary engrams so far and all 4 produced a Mote of Light, seriously, wtf do I even want these for? The next round tier of upgrades just involves a massive rep and token grind which wouldn't be so bad if the game was actually interesting.

If you want a casual shooter for a bit of fun before moving on to the next game then this is worth it if you have the cash to waste. If your after an MMO or game to tide you over until the next big release, keep looking.

    cons:
no story - its worse than borderlands! at least borderlands has a continuous story with plenty of characters (not to mention how awesome they are); in destiny there is only you and your ghost who tells you to first go here then go there then go there for no apparent reason (aside from "to kill aliens").
repetition ftw - not only is the objectives in the game limited to go to a specific location, defend the ghost while it scans and kill a boss, the missions' location are also re-used! You would be asked to go to a place, kill everyone inside and completes the mission, only to come back again later and do everything all over again!
weak weapon variety - there are a few weapon classes, but weapons within the same class has little variations. They are practically the same weapon if not for rare weapons' special effects (which are not game-changing). They even share the same firing sound and reload animation! Hopefully this is just because I havent progressed far enough in the game (lv14 now)
weak player leveling - you dont choose what you get for leveling up; you get a predestined upgrade but need to manually activate it (by pressing x). They probably did it on purpose to suit the game's title. One class has a total of FOUR active skills! One of which is glide (alas, its not wingsuit from farcry 3. its just an invisible propeller) which is really a passive skill. After that you only get upgrades for existing skills. It is not remotely comparable to borderlands.
not a lot of enemy variety - honestly a problem for every video game.
Always online - Destiny has no pause button even when you play alone. I have also experienced disconnections (a total of 6 dc's in 2 days, tho I played a lot).

    pro: gorgeous graphics (not sure whether to thank bungie or sony);
    nice voice over and music;
    overall better-than-last-gen enemy AI;
    a clean interface means the game is easy to learn;
    fun pvp with players and spells flying everywhere in a huge map - but there can only be 12 players in a game;
awesome loading screen animations, plus u can access customization while the game is loading.

In its current state Destiny is by no means a must-buy. Ask yourself if you really want it before buying.

I looked over the skill tree and there's not much to even look forward to like you later can triple jump instead of double jump. You can't even sprint while reloading, I figured that would be some lame skill you get later on, but I didn't even see that anywhere. The game has aim-assist, which is totally unneeded and there's no way to turn it off. The sensitivity of the camera is too freaking slow, I maxed it out at 10 and I still wanted it like twice as sensitive. The only plus the game has is that you can slide, which is really only good in competitive MP, not so much vs AI.

It seems like Bungie is trying to make Destiny be everything for everyone while being nothing for no one. They got the MMO and co-op aspect. It seems like they are trying to be a bit like Borderlands with classes and powers. The classes aren't different enough and the powers are very underwhelming. The only place I think the game may actually shine is in competitive because it's a decent-to-good shooter and building up your "power" would be fun in competitive. Even upgrading your skills should work in competitive because none of them will make you overpowered really.

I kinda knew this game would be very underwhelming from last year's E3 developer interview where they were saying as a positive that all the classes weren't very different so you'd never regret making the wrong choice, which defeats the whole purpose of classes. And I remember one of the devs was like "we're Bungie and we make great games, so Destiny is gonna be great." Looking for an interative world to explore with traders, NPC's, interesting side quests, ability to create mini games within the game world with friends? nope, not here.

They could have done a simply trading/top trumps style mini game based on your weapons, armour or enemies killed...something....anything....it just feels half finished with so much bland emptiness. I mean one of the trading posts has had the same item for sale since day one. no stock refresh nothing. She must be so bored as every player wonders past without saying hello.

What there is are a few really good levels (the first couple and one or two others) with lots of mediocre bits in between and the most anticlimatic 'big boss' finale I've ever experienced in gaming.

I really wanted to love this game like I've done with mass effect, dragon age, Halo, PGR and others. It should have had a massive core of thirsty gamers hooked. But many have felt short changed and left cold.

While I pop back into this game once in a while to see if anything new has been added it certainly isn't Destiny for me to enjoy this game for month after month.

multiplayer is solid if unspectacular and hasn't got the COD must have one more go gameplay.

They've also put such an emphasis on the dropping and looting system, which is absolutely and fundamentally broken. It just doesn't work. Spending hours just to get a blue or purple drop, only to encrypt it and it give you a strange coin or a green chest piece is a complete waste of time. Destiny is a competent game. It is not any shade of spectacular. Playing through it evoked games past, a mixture of Borderlands and Diablo. Examining the content, I didn't see anything new mechanically.

    Mechanics:
Cooldown based abilities that are unlocked as you level, three standard fantasy classes (rogue, warrior, wizard), a limit of active abilities available at one time (similar to Diablo 3's system), certain weapons that level up as they are used (similar to the special weapons in Darksiders 2 and Torchlight 2), weapons and armor of various calibers as loot. A 'super' power for each class.

So far, solid treaded ground. This has been done before, and it has worked. It works again here, but without much 'new' added to the mix it's a retread rather than trailblazing.

    Gameplay:
The gunplay wasn't stellar. It was less responsive than either Halo or Call of Duty in terms of weapon switching, reloading, animation smoothness and weight, and trigger responsiveness. The ammunition system is fine, with standard ammo, special ammo, and heavy ammo matching a weapon type (a feature I enjoyed in Red Faction 2), but again doesn't go beyond anything we've seen before.

    Levels:
They are spotted with enemy spawns. Enemies will simply pop into existence at their spawn location about a minute after they were killed, in full view. This can lead to rather uncomfortable circumstances if someone cleared the area before you, and the respawn happens while you are standing in the middle of the spawn location. There are also repeated caverns that serve no purpose other than to house lone bosses that can be high enough level that you cannot damage them or the occasional chest.

There is lots of retreading the same areas for multiple quests, and the order of quests makes it so you need to back track instead of clearing an area all at once.

Loading times are common and long. Each transition can take up to a minute, and transitioning from a planet to the base or after a disconnect quickly becomes tiresome.

    Encounters:
Enemies are simple. Each name has a set of associated properties, such as melee attacks, a shield, a sniper rifle, and so forth. They attack directly, sometimes flee into the open, and otherwise don't indicate much AI cleverness. The Elites from Halo 1 and 2 felt much more responsive - in tactics and self preservation.

The way they are used is also repetitive. Overland enemies are there as mobs to soak up time and provide experience grind. Quality items rarely drop for these encounters.
During missions they are roadblocks that add clock to reaching the boss near the end, usually by actually being the element preventing the player from proceeding: the way forward is blocked by some obstacle / computer / device, and the player's Ghost needs time to hack / modify / detonate the obstruction. That 'time' is actually 'kill X waves of these enemies that are higher level than in the overworld'.
In event missions found on the overworld, it's another version of 'hold this point for X time' or 'defend the generator for X waves' of increasingly levelled enemies.

A large issue with the opponents is that difficulty is merely presented by their numbers going up. More damage, more shields, more damage resistance. I saw no indication of different weapons, equipment or behaviors, and that's boring. Using the same tactics will win you the day, as long as your numbers are within reasonable distance of their numbers.

The multiplayer is, again, competent but nothing special. It's team based and with a chance for loot at the end of each match. Vehicles are absurd within the mode, and the level design isn't polished nor inclusive of verticality.

    MMO:
Maybe. It's an instanced game world where there might be some number of players in your zone, usually less than 4. Seeing them there helps break the immersion of the game, since the story revolves around the guardians being rare and set upon all sides by enemies, but jumping out into a mission that only 'you, the player' can take care of and seeing another couple players with the same instruction shatters the narrative reason for being there.

    Narrative:
It's loose. The main character is mostly silent, despite the potentially interesting lore bleeding into every matte painting around each level. Combined with the lack of personality of the main, supporting, and background characters, there is very little engagement to be had in what could be a rich fictional world. As mentioned above, seeing other players on the same mission as yourself when the previous cutscene explicitly told you that no other guardians were able to respond breaks the immersion even further.

Unfortunately all of the games missions occur on the same handful of mid-sized maps; the variety of terrain and areas to visit is paltry compared to its competition.

You learn very little about the opposition, your allies, the motivation, the hows/whys/history of the universe; the story is virtually nonexistant in this manner, giving you the feeling of an unfinished world. Some of the enemies look interesting, and some even have unique behaviors in combat and at different levels of injury; this is one of the few redeeming traits of the game.

Level progression is very simplistic and basic, with virtually all characters of the same class differing only in appearance; and as appearance is equipment base, that in itself isn't a player choice.

Equipment is very clearly better/worse, with stated damage/second values or armor ratings; you very rarely have a choice between two equivalent items. Weapon selection is sparse as well; you have a few basic categories of primary weapons, secondary weapons, and two types of heavy weapons, all but two of which simply amount to 'spitting out bullets either on automatic or semi-automatic'.

Overall, a strictly average game with pretty visuals but little else to redeem it.

The whole idea of visiting other planets in our solar system was an awesome concept and for its time the graphics picturing how these worlds would look were very detailed. But that is how far Destiny travels. The game's story line is weak and repetitive. End game is a major short fall. One of the biggest issues with the game is lack of matchmaking, a huge problem in a game that requires multiple players to beat certain missions. In one year the developers announced a sequel which really flattens the idea of this game being classed as a true MMORPG. The multiplayer is average, not great but really not that bad. Overall the game was a disappointment and even with recent patches and DLC's Destiny constantly comes undone with the lack of end game content. For the trophy hunters, the game is relatively easy to platinum with the exception of one trophy "Flawless Raider". This trophy requires a group of highly skilled players to not die a single time in a raid. This game has been made with a certain amount of laziness/thoughtlessness. This is immediately apparent from the character creation screen. There are only three races, each one having several faces, hair, etc to select from. Not a great deal of effort has been put into this by Bungie. This is most apparent when you realise that you can't even change the view of your character when creating them so that you can actually see what the different hairstyles etc are going to look like. It's also worth pointing out that there is no option to name your character, so you will simply be introduced to any other players in the world by your Sony/Microsoft account name. Again this is lazy and shows a lack of thought for the player's experience.

This laziness is continued by the limited number of locations and landscapes in the game. Destiny really is a very small world. And it's a world of repetition. Go to point A, shoot some quite unintelligent aliens, wait for your companion robot (a "ghost" voiced by Peter Dinklage") to scan an object or open a door, claim reward. Rinse and repeat ad nauseum.

On the positive side, the lighting and particle effects in the game are absolutely stunning; the best I've ever seen in a game. Trudging through dark unlit corridors with only the light on your weapon to illuminate the way is quite eerie. Also, the mechanics of the gunplay itself are very well executed. Combat is fast, ferocious and the controls are responsive. Need to sprint away before your shield is depleted or administer a deadly melee strike? It's easy to do in the midst of the fighting.

The art style of the game is fantastically futuristic but the items I've seen so far have a generic look to them. Levelling your character seems quite interesting so far but I need to play more in order to fully get a feel for the depth of the process.

Above are just my first impressions, I have yet to participate in any PvP or finish the shallow campaign story. I will update this review in due course. But for now I would say, prepare to be underwhelmed. I went into Destiny with little enthusiasm but it seems that even I should have tempered my expectations.

You know how playing a bad game can make you want to play a really good one? Destiny makes we want to play Halo 3 again. It's not a bad game, but it really doesn't stand up to the Halo series... at least yet.

This review is based mostly on the open beta, but from I've heard they are very similar. This game had promise but it just feels like "eh". It has some stuff, the movement is nice and fluid, basic combat is simple but still finds way to be fun...at times. Though if one word were to be used to sum up this game it would be "Borderlands". Go into an area, kill the dudes move onward. NowThis review is based mostly on the open beta, but from I've heard they are very similar. This game had promise but it just feels like "eh". Go into an area, kill the dudes move onward. Now notice I love the hell out of Borderlands, but Destiny has that lack of spirit. It sets up things that doesn't go anywhere. With your talking flying helper thingy, and the character sometimes speaking, you'd think we'd get some banter, but no not really. And the news that Old Russia is the only explorable place on earth is just **** Come on, 500 million dollars and you have the first planet with almost nothing. Boss battles are either pathetic or extreme. They have to find some form of balance between fast shooting and MMO, but all that means is hide in a spot a shoot at the weak point, then run out for ammo eventually. Also minor complaint, but I can't stand the "Bungie" way of naming things. You know where everything is just named after something instead of just being original. In conclusion the game is little more than an overhyped Borderlands Halo hybrid that lacks in both of the games best aspects. It's a well known fact that something that can do multiple things, will never do those things as well as something focused on a single thing. This game is certain to not make it's 500 million dollar budget back. Expand

Boring, repetitive and did i say boring? Played for 10 hours. The plot is all over the place. The missions are all over the place. The AI is way too predictable. The villains hid behind a rock, peek out, then come out and to shoot over and over and over again. All you have to do is hide at the same spot that you enter and they wont come at you. Every damn time. BOOORRRINGG. I want a refund.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Destiny is good game, it draws you in straight away with it's graphics and great gameplay. That all came to end for me, all the top tier gear is locked away at level 20 and you need to earn reputation with factions and currency to be able to buy the gear. the problem with that is by the time you grind enough reputation and currency you have done everything the game has to offer so many times over.

Once you reach level 20 you HAVE to wear specific items that have a Light rating in order to continue leveling up, if you take them off to wear something with no Light rating you can no longer level up beyond level 20. This mechanic to me is just pointless in any game let alone a game that already has so many things that need grinding they add specific items you need to farm just to level up beyond level 20.

The story is almost non-existent and even though I just played it I can't remember anything about why I was running around the solar system besides it was to stop a darkness that is never really explained who defeated a traveler that is never really explained or how a tiny little floating box somehow brought your character back to live after being dead for hundreds of years.

The game appears of have had great potential not to mention an insane budget and wit both of those what has been released is a very pretty game with excellent game play but is completely devoid of any good storytelling in its campaign and far too much farming/grinding.

With nice visuals, sounds and extremely solid gameplay mechanics but that's pretty much all that can be positively said about this game. The story is very repetitive, with the same missions carried out in different settings over and over. The length of the story is very short and there's really no incentive whatsoever to veer off the main story path and explore. There will be hidden caves with higher end enemies inside them. An obvious place to have some decent loot right? Nope. Nothing.

The Strike missions are in all fairness an enjoyable experience when played with friends, but the distinct lack of chat support makes it pointless trying to team up with other individuals. Not that you'll actually need to as on normal difficulty the game can be played with eyes closed. And on Hard difficulty only certain enemies are moderately tricky, sure the bosses will take a lot longer to down but there's little danger of dying.

The PVP aspect of the game has some potential with the very solid shooting mechanics. The map designs are by no means great and could do with some good verticality put into them but in the main they are decent layouts. However, any fun that may be had in the crucible is quickly sucked away by the inclusion of the super moves. I understand they are trying to add something different to the game but 1 hit kill moves that are practically impossible to fight against and obliterate everything on screen instantly are not the way to go about it. The 1 hit kill shotgun is vastly overpowered and is unanswerable in close quarters. Overall it's just an extremely unbalanced pvp multiplayer with limited maps and limited game modes. At the very least i'd expect a "hardcore" vanilla mode, with the option to play without the ridiculous super powers and perhaps the mini-map which negates any potential stealth approach to gameplay.

Overall, A well built game that seriously lacks any ideas other than go to point A defend against a horde then kill a boss and with terrible unbalanced pvp.

An OK game. I find there to be nothing special. It's like Borderlands and Halo had a baby. It's Halo, but without the polish you would expect from a Halo game. Enemies are all mindless walking turrets with varying amounts of HP. Missions are repetitive. The "open world" is sparse. No NPCs. No random events. This game is essentially an FPS with all of the worst elements of MMOs thrown in...5/10.

Love the atmosphere, character designs, and graphics. Why did I give it a 5 then? There is no story. The fact that review sites and users have given this a 9.0+ rating is a joke. They are blinded by their love for Bungie and/or shills. This type of RPG with terrible storytelling is what we expected 20 years ago. Not in 2014. It's sad, because 10 years down the line when they release all of the DLC, people are going to say the game is good with great story when all they did was use 10 years to milk the players.

Now, the game is not bad, just very mediocre. Destiny does a lot of things well, but its so safe, uninspired and lacking in anything fresh that it ends up being a jack of all trades, master of none. The game so clearly wants to be a Halo/Borderlands hybrid, but it misses the marks that make both series popular and falls into a strange gray area. It has the exact same identity crisis that Elder Scrolls Online has, in that it can't decide if it wants to be a singleplayer/Co-op focused shooter, or an MMO. It has MMO elements, but since there's no big PVP battles and the world is way smaller than it was hyped up to be, it hardly feels like an MMO, especially with no real voice chat. But, because it still has the gameplay of an MMO IE: Repetitive grinding and a severe lack of mission variety, it simply isn't as fun as a single player/Co-op experience (especially with no local Co-op). If your game is an shooter with MMO elements, but the MMO elements aren't used effectively, its just a shooter with annoying DRM.

Don't get me wrong, the core of the gameplay is still excellent. The game controls well, the leveling is satisfyingly addictive, the gunplay and physics are tight, the environments are gorgeous and the weapon customization, while not as deep as say, Borderlands, is still very fun. But that's the problem. Like I mentioned before, the game just lacks any discernible wow factor and leaves the player feeling like its all been done before and better. You'll fight the same enemies, in the same mission types, with the same objectives over and over and over again. The objective always seems to be: Fight off waves of enemies while the Dinklebot hacks into something, or Guard the Dinklebot while it opens this door. For a game that hyped itself up to be a game that will be the next big thing in Next Gen gaming, it plays it insultingly safe.

Maybe the most heinous sin that this game commits is that it lied about its size. The game was billed as having this massive world with an emphasis on organic exploration. Nope, its a mostly linear shooter that takes place in various indistinguishable rooms and outdoor areas. The story, which may be the most disappointing aspect of the game, is insultingly short. It took me about 7 hours to finish the story campaign, which included about an hour of grinding for gear. 7 hours? In a game that is supposed to have a 10 year life span? Are you kidding me? This game is hardly an MMO, more like a Fairly Sized But Far Smaller Than They Promised It Would Be Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter. It needs its own genre, FSBFSTTPIWBMOFPS. Wonder if it'll catch on... The worst part is, is that what little story you do get, is not memorable at all. Seriously, can anybody tell me the story or lore of this world? No you can't. There's no engaging narrative or characters worth getting emotionally invested in. I'm not saying that every game needs to have this, as I much prefer games that try to excel in gameplay, music and visual style, but its like Bungie suddenly forgot that they made Halo, which had both an epic sci-fi narrative and characters worth caring about. Most of the story is told by the Dinklebot, in a flat tone, as if Peter Dinklage was given Ambien and then forced to narrate the world's most boring documentary on space. Most of the sound design in the game, including the music is lackluster, which is a shame since Marty O' Donnell composed it, and he usually knocks it out of the park. The PVP is mostly worthless too, as it is horribly balanced, and uncharacteristically of Bungie, has very poorly designed maps.

Overall, I played about 9 hours of it on a rental and I got to level 12. I'm sure as with most MMO's, it gets better once you hit the level cap, but the game did nothing to convince me to keep playing it, and unless you're Zelda Twilight Princess, I'm not under the impression that games get to be boring for 6 hours before getting good. I've heard the game is also better with friends, but most things are better with friends, and I believe that games should be able to hold up as a single player experience. Destiny will go down as the poster child of overhyped, underwhelming games and should be a harsh lesson to gamers about pre-ordering games and buying into advertising hype. Because of the record breaking amount of pre-orders, the game feels stripped of content, clearly made to squeeze more money out of consumers with DLC and expansions that should have been in the game at launch. The best thing I can say about Destiny is that it's just another soulless AAA game that promised us heaven and drags us through hell, like Watchdogs, ESO, Thief, and Titanfall before it. For some people the core of Destiny is good enough to find enjoyable, but for people who haven't allowed themselves to be force fed the flavorless gray paste that is the modern AAA gaming industry, we expect better.

Destiny is a flawed but still extremely fun first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a way it adds to the game's addictiveness. [Oct 2014]
