I give this game a 7. It's not a 10 (That would require a lot more work on the engine for graphics and other tweaks) .. 7 is probably fair, maybe a little high, but it helps balance out all of the 0's and 1's. The game isn't a 0 or 1, If you just play the Multiplayer it is a lot like MW2, that's true. Graphics - not much improvement. Maps overall maybe a little bigger for some of them (some of them are actually pretty good) .. I traded in my worthless Black Ops, so I only paid about $45 for the game. So not out that much overall. Are there things I would like to see in the game? Sure. Part of the issue was obviously Sledgehammer not being used to the IW Engine 4.0 enough to upgrade it to a true 5.0 iteration. So it's basically IW 4.4 Engine (some of the stuff from MW2 is actually directly copied over in the multiplayer campaign which WAS somewhat lazy on their part)

If you like campaigns, it's not bad. Short, but almost all of the shooters are. It felt somewhat less "roller coaster" over Black Ops, but it is still a linear story (obviously)

There are many things I haven't even really used yet, like changing up killstreaks. There are some different ones.

The game is worth playing, but I wouldn't suggest getting CoD Elite, and if you can find it used (which I'm sure after all of the raging there will be used copies popping up) I would go for it. It's definitely not as bad as Black Ops, but it's not as revolutionary as it could be either.

This game was awful. Purely disgusting. The gameplay mechanics have not changed in the past 10 years. Although might be tried and true. The ending when Price kills makarov and smokes a cigar was a terrible way to end the game. And killing that little girl in the cutscene, was that really appropriate?

There are few whiz-bang spectacles that put a smile on my face like piloting snowmobiles or defending a fast food restaurant did in Modern Warfare 2. It actually played more like a checklist for a focus group. Sniper levels? Check. Vehicle sections? Check. "Controversial" moment? Check (poorly, I might add). The narrative lacks the focus, cohesion, professionalism, and sheen that the second game had (the watermark for the Modern Warfare franchise), and is over much, much too quickly. The levels are also something of an eyesore, with a nearly monochromatic color palate (save for a batch of welcome blue skies) and blurry, pixelated textures. In short, buy this game for its multiplayer, not for a satisfying conclusion to a series in whose characters you're invested. Expand

I dont understand the critics from the major companies....clearly Actavision wrote them a big fat cheque so that they would give it some sort of positive score. This game lacks everything its a COPY PASTA of MW2 what a joke and their charging us full retail price. This game sucks KEEP your money and instead play MW2........ Im going for a refund as we speak.

Since there was no engine change, the graphics remain pretty much the same as in MW2. The weapons are unbalanced (*cough* UMP *cough*). And ofcourse, you get the insane amount of tent pitchers that only a CoD game can provide (not to mention the boosters). The campaign I did somewhat enjoy, despite the occasional unseen death, or magic phasing of bullets through the enemy. The story wasn't terrible, though, it pretty much plays like every CoD campaign before it. The saving grace of this game is in the co-op mode, which I've actually quite enjoyed. Survival mode can be fun when done with a friend. In conclusion, if you MUST have all CoD games, than go ahead and get this one, otherwise, with Skyrim on the way, and Arkham City and Uncharted 3 already out, and a multiplayer gem like Battlefield 3 out as well, this CoD is skippable. Unfortunate to say MW3 is nowhere near as good as the previous games in terms of multiplayer, with the major drawback being the map design. With 16 maps included on the disc you'd think there would be atleast a dozen of good quality maps, instead you're met with 16 small, maze ridden maps that have no flow whatsoever. In my opinion there are about 3-5 bearable maps, the rest are so poor even the maps from Black Ops outshine. I seriously think when the **** hit the fan at IW all the map designers left because the 16 on offer are truly awful. Pretty much all buildings are locked out and everything is basically flat, there are no areas to cover your six and it's completely geared toward the Rambo COD gamers that run around like blue arsed flies shooting and running constantly.

It is a severe disappointment,. I was expecting this game to not match the quality of the previous two games but even then I was still majorly let down.

This is the worst COD MP I have ever played, and that includes COD2, COD4, W@W, MW2 & Black Ops.

This is a completely truthful opinion from a big fan of the series, unfortunately it seems that it is now time to leave it for dead (or atleast go back to the awesome MW2).

Seriously, the maps are truly awful. I am selling this game as soon as I have finished the campaign.

Just a map pack for MW2 with another over scripted storyline. MP lags and elite won't allow me to register. If you want a decent FPS game to play, go play BF3 then. At least it is an improvement upon it's predecessor. This isn't. AVOID.

Now that the "comparison" of BF3 to MW3 is out of the way let me get on with my review of MW3. Having played the COD series from the very beginning and feeling the game come into maturity as both IW and 3Arc passed the torch back and forth each year, I have to say that COD4 really set the stage for the modern 1st person shooter and like any great movie the sequels are hard pressed to hold their own against the original. MW3 borrows probably 90% of the textures, sounds, and map objects from the last 2 games. The cliche if it isnt broke dont fix it comes to mind. The multiplayer is where the game still remains at its best - (once you look past how similar to MW2 it really is), You will bgin to notice that the small tweaks that so many wanted from MW2 have been implemented in MW3 - it no longer takes an entire magazine to take down an enemy player on core mode, gun balance has come into line, perks have been adjusted to be less of a hassle so that true player vs player is the focus and finally the maps and layout of each seems to make for a better flow of battling and prevents slow gameplay. The only real problem with this game is that most players are Veterans of the series and were expecting a "NEW" game but were given MW 2.5. The game is still fun and enjoyable and with the added Spec Ops ( modern day live zombies ) and the stackable kill streaks, you wont regret purchasing it as long as you didnt buy the $99 version. For the new players that this is their 1st time playing the Modern Warfare series will find this one of the best games they have ever played and it will be well worth it. The biggest issue this game has to overcome is the purchase prices of $59 when it should be closer to $39 as an upgrade to MW2 Expand

They have succeeded at every single aspect of that. The singleplayer is intense and succinct. It flows beautifully and pits the player right in the middle of some extremely entertaining action. It properly rivals the glorious singleplayer of Call of Duty 4. Spec Ops mode is absolutely enthralling, you really are in for a treat with Survival. It'll keep you hooked for hours. And the Multiplayer. It is a well known fact that Black Ops multiplayer was a poor show for a Call of Duty game. Let's just say, the multiplayer in this has brought back what we missed in Call of Duty 4. Balanced gameplay, fast paced gun-on-gun gameplay, and an absolutely entertaining and enjoyable video gaming experience. It really is everything they said it would be.

If you want me to compare this to Battlefield 3, which I also own, then all I can say is to pick what is right for you. If you like more teamplay and tactical gameplay, go for Battlefield. If you want fast-paced and intense gameplay, go for Call of Duty. I like both, so I will play both and enjoy both.

As a Call of Duty player since the series came out in 2003, I was legitimately worried that this game would fall down the same hole as Black Ops did last year. My God I was wrong, this is everything I could ask for in what is one of my favourite video game series of all time. This is not Black Ops, this is not Modern Warfare 2, and this is not Modern Warfare 1. This is Modern Warfare 3, in a league of its own. Best game in the series to date. The worst part about these games are the maps. In 1 week I know that I'll have every single corner memorized and the game will be a major repetition festival. Not at all interested in forking out more money for DLC maps that should have already been included. ALSO BIG NEGATIVE - There are more maps than you'll ever see included with this game, for some reason the devs don't run every map in every game mode so you more than likely will never play more than 4-5 maps unless you play every single game mode for hours a day. Overall, dedicated servers are a necessity if I'm every going to buy another CoD game, and I won't buy another one on this generation of consoles because they obviously aren't going to try, or can't improve the graphics over MW2. Last point, I bought the DLC for Black Ops and it was pointless. Over 2 months I never once got to play any of the DLC maps because the people I was playing with (random) obviously didn't buy it and there is no way to choose which map to play in. Yeah, I'm completely done with this series without dedicated servers or a guaranteed way to play ALL the maps. I know Infinity Ward broke apart and there is some kind of fan boy war over this game and BF3 (I do not have or play BF3 because I heard it sucks) but I don't care about any of that. I just want the ability to play ALL the maps in the game without having to play 8 hours a day 5 days a week in order to get lucky enough to get the rare maps that never get played. And, I want an improved graphical experience for each new game. Neither of those conditions have been met with MW3. So, basically the commercials with Jonah Hill were cool but, yeah MW3 is so much just MW2 with new killstreaks and maps. If that makes it for you then buy it. If not then please play Dark Souls, the more the merrier.

It gets a 2 because I expected much more having played MW2 and Black Ops. If you've never played a CoD before then it'll be great for you. I imagine the negatives are from people who've played this game before.

Generally there is nothing wrong with this game specifically. It is everything anyone could want in a modern day shooter. The problem is not with the success of the game mechanics. Most users feel ripped off to pay for a game with recycled artwork, dated graphics, and minor tweaks to a game they just bought a year ago for the same price. The Call of Duty series has turned into the Nickelback of the gaming world. Mass producing the same thing over and over again just to fill the shelves with games that pander to the masses. But, we often forget, the masses need some games too, and those people are enjoying this game and the experience that comes with it, and that is what they are paying for. Not for a new game, but for a very similar game with a fresh start for everyone and some new features. All in all, this game goes against artistic integrity and what it means to be creative, but maybe we shall refer to call of duty as a commercial art, just as other games could be considered more of a fine art. The game does not deserve a score of less than 5 at all, but if the scale was based on ONLY other CoD games, then it should score a 2.2. Thank you. Expand

Now im going to be completely honest here, having gotten the game 3 days early I can tell you one thing. It's simply more of the same. That's not to say the original CoD 4 was bad though, it's just completely over used and now getting to the point where it is ridiculous.

The third installment into the Modern Warfare series is somewhat disappointing. While the game is a really good game nonetheless, do not expect anything drastically new. I think the main point here would be "why change a winning formula?". Their is clearly a reason that COD is the highest selling gaming franchise in history...because they have perfected what the first person shooter should be. It is hard to believe that this game has gotten so many negative reviews from "fans". If anything, it shows how this BF3 v MW3 has affected peoples judgement. To give a game a 0 or a 1 score means that it is utterly unplayable, so their no excuse for giving this game those scorelines unless A) you have not played it and do not intend to because you are so hung up on BF3 or B) you wish to drive the score down intentionally. Both are inexcusable. It is clear that MW3 is a fantastic piece of software! Universal accliam from critics should tell yo usomething. Agreed, the series could use some freshening up, but to say that it is entirely stale is a gross misstatement. The graphics are fantastic as always, the action is explosive and over the top and will keep you on your seat, and the multiplayer is a real treat. The new survival mode is absolutely brilliant and will be a good alternative to the "zombies mode" of black Ops. Well done Infinity Ward, you made another brilliant one!!! Expand

Its the best at SP, MP, Spec-Ops simply everything. The game may be close to MW2 at graphics but its the best game ever. Best-in-class multiplayer is now more balanced than ever. Also you shouldn't worry about empty servers because it is best selling game ever. It deserves 10.

Enjoy your $60 map pack. I was skeptical of this purchase in the first place because of the previous products in this franchise but I thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt and give it a shot. Absolutely worst purchase I have ever made.

There is no point to sugarcoat this, this game is modern warfare 2 with a few new maps, and even saying that is too much. I keep being fooled into buying these games when I could clearly spend my 60 dollars on something more worth it, like food and clothes. With that said, call me when this recycled series hits the next generation consoles (PS4/XBOX720), maybe they'll have something new by than.

There's a tangible insistence from gamers that this series needs to evolve, but it seems unwarranted when it still leads the FPS class. The engine's definitely in need of an overhaul, but when it comes to thumping set-pieces and addictive multiplayer design, Modern Warfare 3 is still in a league of its own.

By sticking to the series' strengths, Modern Warfare 3 delivers some of the best competitive, cooperate, and single-player shooting in the business.

As a complete package, Modern Warfare 3 takes the cake. [Jan 2012, p.67]
