Is it really too much to ask of a game set in space, for it to let the player actually travel through space?

    Truly disappointed.

I am sure if you are a bethesda loving person this game will scratch the itch. It is the ultimate example of going for quantity over quality. Also weirdly upset with the lack of Jank, it added so much heart to the bethesda game and without it something is definitely missing.

Generally just another Bethesda game but bigger and more chopped up with loading screens.

For the people that hate not being able to fly everywhere. I've spent 60 hours and if I had to fly from orbit to the surface or from planet to planet, or universe to universe, you'd have at least double play time just for travelling. No thanks.

Can't wait for star wars mods!

My only issue is AI is buggy.

Been playing for 4-5 hours of the game so far. The game started really slow. There is nothing exciting in the beginning 4-5 hours of the game. I think you must take a long time to enjoy it. If you'd like to play a videogame where you have fun, playing a Bethesda game is one of best bets, and Starfield is now the best Bethesda game (although Oblivion will always have a special place in my heart). If you prefer to have Sony spend millions in motion capture to hide the fact that the gameplay in most of their games, the only thing that should actually matter, is just not fun... fine, go play that, just leave the reviews alone.

    starfield review

I think the game is a solid 5.5/10.
Sadly for me the game is a disappointment.

    - Continuously having the warp via multiple menu hops is incredibly immersion-breaking.
    - Menu/map system is very jarring. I want to play the game but I can’t stand having to use the menus as they are now.
    - Too many planets/moons that are simply bland. I wonder when the final tally is done, how many worlds actually had content via a quest or something interesting vs being a barren procedural generated landscape with random events.
    - Combat is bland, I think this is mainly due to how poor enemy/companion AI is. Some enemies are just damage sponges.
    - Ground level map is a complete failure.
    - The game actually feels like a lobby game, where you scroll up/down a column and select where you want to go. In fact if they got rid of all the star maps and had vertical columns that you scroll thru (with name + mob lvl) of the system. I would take that over what they have now.
    - None of the characters are really memorable too. They just feel soulless.
    - I can't emphasize enough just how much the "chores" take you out of the game, I almost wish the game came with a ipad app where I can manage my map/inventory thru that instead of the continuous map/menu hopping.

    Some pros...
    - I did enjoy the last 5 hours of the main story.
    - I'm sure other storylines are enjoyable, I tried to pursue them but gave up and just went for main story (due to fatigue from menu hopping)
    - Ship building is fun (combat is not)

Overall the game is disappointing, "waiting for mods" should not excuse any failures of the game. My expectations at a base level I am immersed and the systems in the game are enjoyable. Unfortunately there are too many jarring elements that just hurt the experience.

After spending about 20 hrs with this trash, I gotta say, this is the worst game I have played in a while.
Boring fetch quests that don't make any sense. Time consuming boring tasks for the sake of extending the boring, uninspired, empty gameplay. Did I mention that there are no vehicles while exploring planets!???!?!?!? That’s right, we don’t have the technology to have a vehicle to move around and explore when landing on a different planet. Insane! You have run on foot, your O2 runs out in 30 sec and you have to walk everywhere, it is beyond dumb! You walk for 10-15 min until you see something or find something useful. Major waste of time, just to inflate their gameplay numbers.

    Horrible NPCs and enemy/friendly AI.
NPCs would get stuck in the environment all the time. They would float and clip through the floors or ceilings. Glitches, bugs and crashes all the time. Missing basic PC features, such as HDR support, FOV slider, Texture quality setting. Outdated graphics/animations.

The lighting appears to be broken in most closed spaces, especially the ones underground. It will get dark, almost gray/tan and then when you move a bit it will get very bright. It is definitely broken.

And there is the matter of the loading screens, oh boy. Pretty much every door you open will result in a loading screen. I am not joking. Let me tell you, you open a lot of doors in this game and pretty much every single one would trigger a loading screen.

The sound design appears to be pretty good, but that's about it.

The game was misrepresented in a huge way. They basically lied to us when they said you can go anywhere, explore everything...that's not true at all. You only have a set of points where you can jump with your ship, and for planet exploration, they are empty worlds with 5 randomly created creatures here and there...all buildings you encounter are all copy/paste the same design, no deviation whatsoever. Horrible.
On top of everything the game will constantly CTD, with no errors. This game took them how many years to make???? What a joke.

There is literally nothing of substance here. Boring, uninspired quests, ugly characters, horrible face animations, bad PC performance...and I can go on and on.

Bottom Line, don’t buy this game! It isn’t worth your time or money. If you get on gamepass, I would say try it and see if this is your cup of tea. But as it stands, it has a lot of issues, horrible bugs/glitches, bad performance, boring, time consuming, unfun gameplay, fetch quests that don’t make any sense, except to waste your time.

First things first: this game is a "textbook critic 8.5" but really a 7.5/10, so why a 9/10? Simple: people complaining about performance issues, haters and people who were mislead. People who were mislead, you ask? Yes:

First things first: this game is a "textbook critic 8.5" but really a 7.5/10, so why a 9/10? Simple: people complaining about performance issues, haters and people who were mislead.

People who were mislead, you ask? Yes: one, by Bethesda Game Studios with vague statements about exploration, handcrafted content (this one took everyone by surprise) and, surprise yourselves too: reviewers who gave it a 10/10 after claiming the first thing you should do is NG+.
I truly think there is NO procedural generation and they truly only meant it was procedurally generated terrains, which is another misleading statement.

YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING IF YOU GO FOR NG+! More than enough reason to *ignore* every other single side quest, except a few for resources and credits. And, if you get to the final main quest mission you will realize you should have done more sidequests, saved that world and explored your first regular save more, THEN went to NG+, and go empty handed at a higher level to "finish the game". And this is coming from someone who plans to NG+ in stealth until I'm level 150, and then I will settle.

Just why, you may ask: well, so much for "the most handcrafted content of any Bethesda game". You may find the same caves and outposts over and over which makes absolutely 0 sense, specially when searching for the "main quest items". Makes 0 sense for a game developed for more than 5-7 years. Same as the infinitely small number of weapons or communications (phones, anyone?) for no reason at all, although I confess interplanetary calls might have been too sci-fi.

    Besides, the good things:
    - This truly is one of the biggest RPGs of all time, only put to shame by Baldur's Gate 3.
    - There always is something to do and while yes, most "Activities" (tertiary sidequests?) are a chore there's some which - Great characters, great villains, great stories
    - Choices REALLY matter. Until, y'know, NG+.
    - Combat is unironically fun and not annoying, kinda easy where it needs too, too spongey where it should have not been
    - Outposts and ship building are REALLY good. Just remember to also do some sidequests to get a lot of credits, mainly the faction ones.
    - Exploration truly isn't that bad until you do it enough times to find the same layouts over and over.

And no, it doesn't excel at anything except for physics without dropping below 30fps, which is unironically incredible. Everything is an 8.5/9 shadowed by the nonsense that is NG+ and lack of good procedural content (I think they only procedurally generate terrain, not layouts... incredible) when they could have justified "going back" pretty easily. They had the opportunity to excel there, and you will see the insanely missed opportunity.

So yes, my review should be an 8, but just to compensate haters, trolls and people with underperfoming PCs I'm sorry little ones, but I have to do this...

I know my computer is up to the task because I can run games like Jedi Survivor and RDR2 perfectly fine at High settings and get over 60 fps consistently while Starfield struggles to stay above 30. I think this shows that optimization for PC has taken a backseat and I don't want to wait for an update somewhere down the line that makes the game playable. Expand

My favorite parts of BGS games in the past was travelling along a path and finding some magical Location, npc, etc. In starfield there is none of that it is all Reused Procedural Generated assets.

If this released 6 or 7 years ago it would be good but today it feels a few years behind the masterpieces we have been receiving this year.

I wish I could reccomend this game but this is another example of Bethesda relying on modders to fix their mistakes.

This game feels stuck in the 2010s. I enjoy a lot of parts of this game but they are outweighed by frustrating things. I was hoping for Skyrim in space, because I love Skyrim. But it is more of a Fallout in space and I do not like fallout at all. The gunplay does not feel great at all to me. Freedom to explore is good though. Weird choices with the menu too.

    -------------------------

Starfield is the most ambitious RPG that Bethesda has ever produced. Even the most ambitious one that anyone has ever produced. It is not a space sim. If you are looking for such an experience, Starfield is not a good choice. It is an action RPG in the Bethesda formula, as we know it from the games of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series: Large, immersive simulated game worlds that captivate the player with their liveliness, action-packed combat, countless questlines and NPCs with their own stories and the environmental storytelling typical for Bethesda. The world overwhelms you at first with its size and the impressions you get from places, NPCs and number and variety of tasks you can receive. But don’t worry. You will find your way around quickly without the game constantly holding your hand.

The graphics are very beautiful, colorful and varied, but do not aim for photorealism, but rather remind of the futuristic illustrations from science fiction and space travel, as they were popular in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s of the 20th century on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

The soundtrack is always fitting and just epic. It more than does justice to the theme, the size of the game world and the immense dimensions of outer space.

For me, Starfield is the game of the generation and a purchase that is more than worth the price. Mod support and announced DLCs will keep this game alive for a decade or two and provide incredible replayability.

The game isn't bad because of pronouns, a natural part of most languages. It's bad because it's empty, with facial animations that stir up the uncanny valley response and voice acting that sounds as though it was generated by artificial intelligence.

It was a number of different things that made me give this game a negative review instead of a positive one. I was stockholm syndromed into thinking I loved the game and I did have a lot of fun when playing but then I just hit a wall that made me look at the game differently.

Exploration felt quite boring to me. I found the procedural generation not great and after 'exploring' multiple planets I just got sick of going in the same buildings, killing the same enemies and getting almost the same type of loot items again and again. I even got some of the same caves and bases with exactly the same terminal logs and environmental storytelling on multiple different planets.

I pretty much gave up on surveying after my second time since I found it mind numbingly boring having to run the distances in between the POIs and everything that needed scanning. It doesn't help that a lot of the landscape started to feel the same no matter what planet it was I landed on.

At first I really enjoyed the quests but as I did more and more and actually thought about the previous ones I realized that a massive number of the quests are quite simplistic and are basically just fetch quests or going somewhere to kill/persuade someone.

Can't really speak much for actual choices in the game. From what I saw the world doesn't really respond to your actions much and your actions provide little impact with the actual outcomes of quests. For me the choices in Starfield feel like the choices in Fallout 4. They are there to give you the illusion of choice but in most cases you are still going to progress to the same outcome regardless of what you choose. Starfield does do this better though and its not so obvious as it was in a game like FO4, I think having a voiceless protagonist is a big reason why it's hidden better.

As well as these things the game doesn't have much character for me. No edge or anything like you would get in the Elder Scrolls or Skyrim. It just feels incredibly vanilla and like Bethesda didn't want to take any risks or rock the boat. Even FO4 was better for me in this regard since it had the character of the Fallout universe/lore to back up the bad parts of that game.

I grew up playing RPGs and it basically didn't feel like an RPG for me but a looter shooter with RPG mechanics. My short summary of the game would be that Starfield is a slightly better version of a Ubisoft game.

It could have been a lot better by being smaller. I think that if Bethesda did a solar system or two with no more than 20 planets max and they were entirely handcrafted Starfield would be 10/10. I wouldn't even care about exploring whole planets. I would rather have a skyrimish size map per planet of handcrafted content than hundreds of the same repetitive tiles across hundreds of planets.

I wouldn't say don't get the game but IMO its certainly not worth the full price, let alone the price I paid for the premium edition. Wait for at least 6 months or a year and pick it up when its on sale and the modding scene for the game is more developed. Modding like in all BSG games will be top notch and likely produce stuff that is even better than the base game

So after I clear a room, I spend probably 15-20 mins checking every single item in the room for Lore, Valuables, or upgrades. Ever since Fallout 3/N.V & Skyrim I've become almost OCD about this. This is one of my biggest passions when it comes to Bethesda RPG's. I also love their formula/style and Bethesda is one of only about 3 Game Devs where I feel that "More of the same is Great/what I'm looking for" (Old School Bioware and CDPR are the other 2.) Most Games/Series I want to see a change, I want to see that next great thing in the franchise to raise the bar for the future. However I'm completely content with the way they took Starfield.

I understand some of the other reviews/opinions and since everyone deserves their own to begin with, I know that my opinions and wants for a game like this are not the Normal, and that I'm def part of the minority. But that's ok.

My next reason for giving Starfield a 10, is Bethesda gave us another Great platform to run wild with Mod's & End's. I've been modding for over 15 years and there's nothing better than knowing either myself, or someone else can make that change, add that item, insert those weapons etc. This is always a top tier reason for Bethesda games in my book.

I can get into the Story, I can find the Lore, I can "Role Play" my way through the game and be satisfied. All this also knowing there will be many changes via future DLC & Mods. I can't wait to see what the game looks like 1-2 years down the road..

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is wonderful and very beautiful in terms of space details. I spent 30 hours playing without any problem on the Circus S. In short, the best this year. Expand

Should be $10, just a copy and paste from fallout 3. Nobody should ever waste their time on this game.

Another broken mess created by the most overrated studio in existence, just a bland, boring and souless game that makes sport games look like masterpieces, same old fallout 3 gameplay, broken AI, robotic npcs, recycled empty planets, "massive open world game" full of fast travels, a complete joke of a game.

There's a lot of flaws in space in Starfield. But that does not prevent me from exploring our galaxy again and again.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
