To be clear, I am ENJOYING this game 30 hours in, but there is so much pain and lack of polish on managing the basics. You can't even mark items in your inventory to prevent selling them, making every trip to the shop take 3x longer than it should as you sift the grain from the chaff. The map is PAINFUL after lots of usage, no favorite waypoints, really?

A game that is amazing in areas but fails at most of the basics.

I'm about to be real. I'm sorry, but if you're so out of touch and privileged that seeing a pronoun choice in an RPG character creation screen is enough to make you cry rage for TWO AND A HALF MINUTES, you're fragile af and you deserve ridicule.

Pick something and move on like a normal person. The only people who are getting upset at this are middle-aged white dudes who are having an existential crisis and are upset that the world has moved on around their tiny worldview bubble.

Imagine if I, a gay man, threw this type of unhinged tantrum because the majority of video game protagonists are middle-aged white men. Nathan Drake, Kratos, Adam Jensen, Arthur Morga, John Marston, 90% of GTA protagonists (GTA V had TWO straight white male protagonists), CoD campaign protagonists, Master Chief, Mario, Starkiller, Vito Scaletta, Ezio Auditore, Desmond Miles, and the list goes on and on. Despite having zero options, I have enjoyed ALL of these games. imagine if I refused to play games if the protagonist was a straight white man. I would have a game library of like 20 games throughout my whole life.

Let other people feel included in this hobby. There are 8 billion people on planet Earth, and not all of them are straight white men. Let the rest of us have some representation. You'll live. Your precious escapism will be fine. And if pronouns, words that permeate the entirety of the language you speak every day, are enough to annoy or irritate you, you're perfectly free to die mad about it. The world and human society will continue to move on as it has always done.

The game is awesome once you dive a little deeper and get to know the game mechanics. There's a whole lot of negative reviews out there but I'm getting the hint that most haven't played this game. Lucky for me that I'm not much of someone that pays attention to negative reviews. All I can say is that I'm about 20 hours into to game and I'm loving it. The beginning is a little slow but it picks up.

Starfield's space exploration is literally just the illusion of flight, you can probably travel a few hundred yards at most. You're not really traveling/moving/covering any distance. This is why enemies swirl around and constantly zip behind you. Bethesda was essentially hoping that players wouldn't notice they're just controlling a crosshair. In my first 20 hours, I was so bothered, by the fact that there were no ground vehicles, but now after 60 hours I understand, that there is no need for them because ground exploration is so uninspired and tedious. 99% of the planets you can travel to are barren, dull and exploring them might fix your sleep deprivation. At least the story and the different questlines are somewhat interesting and there are a few really awesome characters, but they might not be everyone's cup of tea. On the technical side, this game is absolutely disastrous. It's filled with unnecessary loading screens e.g. climbing up the ladder in your ship, taking off, landing, entering buildings and caves. The PC optimization is a joke especially since even the RTX 4090 + i9 13900K can't achieve a stable 60 fps at 4K without the help of DLSS/Frame generation. And then Todd Howard has the audacity to say "You might need to upgrade your PC" when people ask why the game wasn't optimized for PC. Calling this a "next gen PC game" is the farthest thing from the truth it feels so outdated in so many aspects especially the visual quality (even on ultra). You can keep calling people who criticize Starfield "Playstation fanboys" all you want and say reviews like this are "review bombing" but the game is just painfully average and has gigantic flaws. I seriously can't fathom how people are giving such high scores, it has to be delusion of the highest order. We need to demand better games and not just eat it up. As a huge Bethesda fan for many years, this one really hurts but, I know that the modding community will transform Starfield into an absolute masterpiece, especially since they have already made so many great mods after just 8 days. The side and faction questing is amazing. It carries so much of the rest of the game. The sheer amount and quality of content alone is responsible for most of this score.

The space aspect of the game is poor. Despite BSGs attempts to be ambitious, the ambition boiled-down to them improving on all the parts that they were already good at. Loading is excessive even compared to previous titles, and you can feel the smoke and mirrors of space flight - to the extent that space feels like a mini game tacked on to Bethesda’s bread and butter.

And this pattern repeats. Every part of the game that BSG is not typically good at is either mediocre or barely improved on. Outposts, flight, trading, UI, AI, etc, all have you yearning to play other games that do these things better.

If all parts of the game were of equal quality to the good bits it may even have been a 10, but the smaller parts let down the whole. Ambitiousness is doing something others aren't, and making the same game for 20y 'but Space', then doing the bare minimum for all other parts is not ambitious.

The game is good and worth playing if you like their previous titles.

Current progress: NG+ completed most faction quest lines, have close to fully upgraded outposts linked up.

The game is a loading screen/cut scene simulator. You may think you're about to fly out of a planet only to be met with a cut scene. The only flying you actually do is just sitting stationary in front of a planet, space fighting in a scripted mission, or on the off chance you are engaged by pirates which was rare in my play through. To land you have to watch a cut scene, to fly you watch a cut scene. This game is broken up into different levels by a large amount of cut scenes.

The loading screens were mostly 1-5 seconds long but when you have to go through loading screens to enter any buildings or other sections of the same city/planet it becomes tedious and immersion breaking. I was so tired of these loading screens but what was worse was that I preferred them to watching the same tired take-off and landing cut scenes. The game trained me to desire to fast travel and watch that loading screen simply to save time instead of watching a cutscene. I figure if I’m not participating in the game during those moments anyway, why make myself have to wait longer to get where I need to be? I expected to fly my spaceship in this game but instead could only watch it fly.

I’ve logged somewhere around 55 hours playing. The main mission is interesting but falls short toward the end. I wasn’t satisfied with the ending and the New Game Plus quest which I completed. I was expecting to be faced with several terribly tough decisions to make and never really encountered that except once. I’d say the main quest had loads of potential to be mind-blowing but dropped the ball in the last quarter. Too many fetch this and that type quests are chopped up by cutscenes and loading screens.

The side missions were more interesting than the main storyline. There are several missions that are very fun and rewarding. The story writing here seems to be much better but it's still broken up by the same tedious loading screens and cut scenes.

For the most part, the game is the least bugged Bethesda game I’ve ever played at launch. Stealth is broken currently so expect a patch for that. NPCs do weird things like standing on top of things and floating but I didn’t encounter game-breaking bugs.

Overall, wait for this to go on sale and for Nexus mods to release mods that actually let you fly. This isn’t a $70 or $100 dollar game, it's more in the $30 or $45 dollar range. I’m very glad to have played it but I’m happier that I received it for free when buying my GPU. If you want to watch an honest review about this game before buying go watch Worth A Buy on YouTube.

I wanted to like this game. But it's MID. No amount of Xbots can change the course of history. Multiple high-budget game this year under the Bethesda banner leaving Microsoft holding the Bethesda bag.

Todd Howard should be ashamed of himself and his career. They gave us nothing new. Old engine, old crafting style, old dialogue system, outdated ui, outdated inventory, outdated graphics, outdated as hell combat gameplay, typical outdated crappy Ai npc, and more loading screens than I have ever seen.

They could have cared, I mean so many fkn years spent developing this game. Were they actually working on Starfield? Where did their budget actually go?
Imagine being a Destiny player and fed up with the NeverChanging seasons. Mid after mid after mid.
That's how it feels to pick up and play Starfield.

Who develops a game where the first 15 hours are absolute **** boring, and tedious?

The only thing I love about this game is that on PC I can toggle Command Mode and remove the self-destructive Weight Capacity mechanic.

The saddest thing about this entire situation is this-
Xbox owners have been getting spoonfed games that have been marketed as great for so long that they no longer recognize what makes a game great. So while the rest of the world got to play amazing games like BG3, God of War, Last of Us, (games that pushed the bar for story, graphics, and game design) they were too busy drooling over the likes of Redfall and Starflop.

No amount of pop-up review sites being given advance copies and $50 can change the fact that this game is 20 years old in design with a half-assed paint job.

Now I see why Microsoft gave this game away.

Unfortunately the game was extremely over hyped to be a space-sim like star citizen or no mans sky (which is partly the marketing's fault) If you like Bethesda games, and games with a mind blowing amount of content in terms of story, star field is a very good game, and not at all deserving of the 4.5 the game currently has on here.

While there is an interesting foundation of a game developed by Bethesda game studios, ultimately it falls short in a myriad of ways. What sticks out in this falling short is UI and quest design. You could fly to a planet and the only quest on it is following around a dude giving a museum tour. No need to make an entire planet for just that.

You can fly to a planet to drop off medical supplies, and then the ceo of a resort wants you to turn settlers into slaves or to kill them completely, and promises you money in return, but you don't get the option to give the CEO a taste of his own medicine. You have to get rid of the settlers one way or another, in a very bland yet long quest. And the CEO doesn't even give you a reward. You realize you shouldn't have explored this planet, you should have dropped off your cargo and peaced it.

As far as the UI goes, this is the worst UI bethesda made to date. and that's saying something. the pipboy at least made logical sense when you used it. Starfield has menus in menus in menus in menus and when you try to back out and start over, you are sent to another menu you didn't even open. It is so bad. And it's all ugly with poorly used space. UI is something I can usually ignore. Whatever, just play with what the devs give me. But I've gotten frustrated so many times trying to navigate a laggy menu system that isn't intuitive at all starfield presents the user.

a minor issue is weight of resources and their necessity. There are so many items you actually need to improve your gear and such, but they all weigh a ton, and you don't have much space to keep it. always my least favorite part of the newer bethesda games. And it's getting worse, not better.

I don't want to take away completely from this game, as when you are free to do what you want, instead of navigating the menu, or being stuck with the one option for solving a quest, it is actually quite fun. The illusion of freedom is nice, until the game hits you in the face with the reality of being incredibly boxed in, even with 1000 planets.

Can't say I regret spending 10 dollars to rent this game for a month. But let's just say it is a good thing there is more than one game on game pass.

This sad part is; this is probably going to be Bethesda's best game moving forward. Like they'll never match oblivion, or new vegas ever again, they won't even reach starfield quality ever again. it's all downhill, it seems.

I've been a die-hard RPG gamer for years, eagerly awaiting the release of Starfield. What a colossal letdown it turned out to be! I can't emphasize enough just how much of a disaster this game is in every conceivable aspect.

Exploration: Starfield promised a vast, open universe to explore, but what we got is a lifeless void. The planets are repetitive and uninspiring, offering nothing but barren landscapes and generic space stations.

Storytelling: RPGs are known for their captivating narratives, but Starfield's story is about as exciting as watching paint dry. The characters lack depth, and the plot feels like it was cobbled together in a rush. It's impossible to become emotionally invested in this snoozefest.

Gameplay: The gameplay is a nightmare. Tedious fetch quests, clunky combat mechanics, and a complete lack of innovation make Starfield a chore to play. It's a shame that a game with such potential ended up feeling like a poorly executed tech demo.

Technical Nightmares: Starfield is plagued by a myriad of technical issues. From constant crashes to game-breaking bugs, it's clear that this was rushed out the door without proper testing. It's astonishing how a game can be so fundamentally broken.

In short, Starfield is a colossal failure in the world of RPG gaming. It fails to live up to even the lowest of expectations and offers nothing of value to the genre. As a devoted RPG fan, I can confidently say that this is a game to avoid at all costs. It's a sad day when a highly anticipated title like this turns out to be a true 0/10 disappointment.

It's a bad game but it's so much better than cyberpunk 2077:

Starfield is a great game, sadly it doesn't have sex scenes for degenerates.

    - Starfield's launch is perhaps 10 times better than CP's launch, CP might fix the game 3 years later.
    - Starfield is not showing you fast-forwarded story and characters cut from the game 1h in.
    - Starfield's vehicles are very customizable, CP doesn't have any of that.
    - Starfield actually has multiple choices if you want to kill or ally the quest characters.
    - Starfield didn't promised multiplayer. CP cuts the multiplayer.
    - Starfield's world is detailed, even the most basic NPC have appropriate clothing for their role and they even react differently based on your quest and status where on CP is completely random.
    - Starfield's loot in buildings make sense to their rooms where CP just have it randomly like the NPCs.
    - Music is the generic, overall CP has better.
    - Story is ok, fits and plays way better than in CP. Again, 'play' not 'watch'. In CP your character's status stay the same. In Starfield you obtained a 1% rank in the whole city, taking a job from a random cop, he will look up to you not down like in CP. Story in CP? Dystopian future where governments and companies have almost total control allow a rockstar drunk boy to operate a heli and nuke to blow the city. You guys don't understand what a dystopian world actually means, unless CP's story was poorly applied, because there's a book I believe.
    - Combat is fine, CP wins, they have dismemberment and melee feels better.
    - Skills own in Starfield, actual RPG game, where CP rapidly changed to an adventure game.
    - Planets are cool compared to No man's launch state, no I don't wait 10 years for some liars to deliver a game, but that's ok, the 500 people that rate 3/10 which means the game isn't a functional game will wait even more.
    - Starfield will have a DLC, CP promised free dlc, but yet we paid full 60$ for a broken and hollow game in order to pay another 30$.
    - Performance is bad, 60 fps, 1080p, at best on medium settings 2080, but that's ok, I will upgrade to 4090 just for this game. All this possible because of these lovely haters who probably lie about the fact of 'playing Skyrim/Fallout' in the past'? CP wins here.
    - Starfield is not on PS5, but CP still loses as that game was horrible and updates were required for it to be playable.
    - Starfield offers a really neat New Game Plus, CP offers.. a cutscene.
    - Starfield offers apartments and mansions and your ships, CP offers 9, after 2 years after launch.
    - Starfield companions they are helpful with loot, carrying and even with the dialogues.
    - Starfield doesn't offer sex scenes, that's ok, we leave that to degenerates.
    - Starfield's police system is way better than your cop donut eater spawning next to you, there's also a bounty system.

I have 60 hours of only doing quests, and still have left I assume a third of the game to go regarding questing and after that comes new game plus.

Starfield is a great game, sadly it doesn't have sex scenes for degenerates.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Starfield takes no risks, aiming to be completely agreeable and inoffensive in every possible way, resulting in an utterly bland and wanting experience.

The project reminds me of a novel someone's been writing for half their life, leaving the author incapable of identifying critical issues due to personal attachment. When you stare at something for too long, you can't see it anymore.

It's no issue to me that Bethesda developed concepts competing titles had already explored and iterated upon. However, they didn't build on the innovations of others, or even borrow from them, as if the studio worked in a bubble, isolated from the rest of the industry. Their sequestered development leaves the game feeling out of date, and even out of touch. It might be new to them, as multiplayer was in Fallout 76, but what about customers who continue playing games during 6-year development cycles?

    Major concerns:

    1. A science-fiction setting somehow lacking in curiosity and wonder.
    2. A light, almost anemic story, written without heart or soul.
    3. A world that completely fails to deliver player immersion.
    4. Stories that take no risks and dares nothing.
    5. Uncomplicated characters with little complexity or effective moral ambiguity.
    6. Role-playing without real choices or moral crossroads.
    7. Adventure without wonder or environmental storytelling.
    8. A game with no unique identity or new perspective.
    9. Writing without voice and tone.

In the spirit of other reviews, I'll use the starting sequence of the game as an example.

In a story, after the inciting incident, the audience will ask, "Can the character easily go back to their old life?" The answer must always be "no".

In Fallout 4, the sole survivor cannot go back to their old life after their spouse is murdered, their baby is taken, and they wake from cryo in the future. In Fallout: New Vegas, the courier cannot easily go back to their old life after they've been shot in the head and left for dead with amnesia. In Fallout 3, the lone wanderer cannot easily go back to their old life after they're forced to leave the vault or be killed.

In Starfield, can the miner easily go back to their old life? The answer is, frankly, yes. There is no dilemma.

Yes, the miner can easily go back to their old life. They can give their client the artifact they were hired to excavate, then go back to mining. Even the pirates don't want anything with the miners.

When you think about it, the narrative error here is that there's no "point of no return" for the miner in Starfield. Yes, they experienced a "vision" when interacting with the artifact. But, if the player asks, "Can I go back to mining?", the answer is, "Yes, easily".

    Other weak points:

    1. If Constellation already theorized that the first to touch an artifact experiences visions, why wouldn't they be present for the retrieval, asking the miners to step aside, to test their theory?

    2. After confirming that touching the artifacts grants visions, why wouldn't other members of Constellation insist on sharing those visions with each other during the planning of future retrievals? There are enough artifacts that everyone at Constellation could experience a vision (and other "experiences"). Does Walter not want to get his money's worth? Does Matteo not want to experience a miracle? Why would all of Constellation stand around a table, clapping for the newcomer who took over their venture?

    3. If Barrett also experienced a vision, and others can easily experience them for themselves, what makes the miner so special that they are given their trust, their companionship, their company ship, their robot, and, again, lead on their most paramount project? What did the miner do to earn any of this? What did the player do to earn this?

Finally, I know this has gone on too long already, but that awkward, family-friendly Neon night club? That setting alone exemplifies the overall feeling of Starfield as a whole: no charm, no tone, no risk, no offense.

Story - You are the SPACEBORN (yes, they actually call you this) and you get magic powers that are literally copy/pasted Skyrim dragon shouts. The entire story revolves around you going to copy/pasted temples, fighting copy/pasted enemies, and collecting copy/pasted loot. Yes, the loot is literally in the exact same spot in every single temple with the exact same layout and enemy placement. It is that lazy. There is nothing science-fiction about this story.

Exploration - Doesn't exist. You do not explore space, you teleport from planet to planet. Flying around in space is pointless outside of combat. Planets are all barren landscapes with a few mines/factories/caves for you to go kill copy/pasted enemies in. There is no environmental storytelling and after maybe 6 planets you will start seeing repeated layouts. Due to procedural generation, you will get nonsensical dungeons where your robot tells you there is no life at all on the planet, only for you to walk into a cave to find tree roots and generic spacemen with guns that only want to kill you.

Role Playing - Almost non-existent. You are a good boy and if you did something bad it's just by accident. I picked the snake cult to start and then when I found snake cultists I had no unique options with them, they are just hostile on sight. The game handwaves this by saying they all went crazy and attack anyone on sight, but then why isn't my character also crazy and why don't the cultists fight one another? Makes no sense. The unique dialogue choices don't change how things play out in 90% of cases. I also picked Wanted as my background, but I didn't have an actual bounty on me in any system, yet bounty hunters would still occasionally attack me in orbit. It makes no sense for me to be Wanted and have bounty hunters on my ass but not actually have a bounty on my head.

Gunplay - It is decent. Passable. The bigger issue is that enemies are bullet sponges, which always makes gunplay feel bad. The game randomly dropped a white pistol with enough raw damage to 2 shot enemies 10 times my level (i was level 2 and destroying level 20 enemies within an hour). Yet if the game does not accidentally drop you higher level loot early, you will be dumping entire magazines into each enemy because of how spongey they are.

Graphics - When the lighting is absolutely perfect the game looks gorgeous. It just isn't perfect 90% of the time and when that happens it looks like baked **** Some of the ugliest character models I have seen in a modern game. When the lighting isn't working it looks like a 360 or PS3 game.

Performance - Nvidia doesn't have real drivers for the game yet so if you have an Nvidia card, you're just **** until that gets fixed. No, even with the DLSS mod you won't get good performance. Currently you need to run an AMD 7800 XT or better to get decent performance. I have a 7900 XTX and I would get dips below 60 in major cities. I am not sure why this game is so demanding since it looks ugly and doesn't even support any modern graphical features.

Space - This deserved its own section. The space part of this game is actually the worst part. You only fly around when in combat and ship combat consists purely of charging the enemy and firing all of your guns, then turning back around and doing it again until they die. There is no depth or interesting maneuvers you can do. You cannot seamlessly go to a planet as they are not physically represented in the game. What I mean by this, is that you can spend hours flying to one and when you get there you will fly through it because it's a 2D picture they didn't expect you to fly into. The ship building is pointless since you cannot field more than one ship at a time. Outpost building is a pointless vanity exercise. Even if you enjoy these features and invest time into them, the game actually wants you to go to NG+ as fast as possible and when you do everything but your perks and levels gets deleted. This means that by not rushing the main story, you are playing the game wrong.

Side Content - Passable at best. The biggest issue is that the main story invalidates everything you do on the side. There is no reason to touch the side content until you are deep into NG+ loops because the game penalizes you for daring not to go to the same temples over and over again, but it will also immediately flood your quest log with 15 side quests within minutes of arriving at the first major city. Yes, the game encourages you to play it incorrectly and then punishes you severely for listening to it.

I do not understand how someone could give this mess higher than a 6/10. Even a 6/10 is being generous. The game is so schizophrenic, just hopping from one abstract idea to the next with no thought to how they connect. Absolutely nobody that made this play tested for playability. The nicest thing I can say about Starfield is that it functions on a very basic level.

The game is not perfect, don't get me wrong. But it is much better then many claim. Graphics aren't nearly as bad as many make it out to be,especially considering the amount of procedural generation present. I'd say to give it a go,it's on Gamepass so you don't even need to pay much to try it. Game is a vast universe ripe with content, for those who have the time and patience to put in the time sink. Probably the worst release from Bethesda so far. A bare bone skeleton of a game waiting for modders to make it interresting, for free. I see what you're doing here B. Waiting a year until it's been modded into oblivion to sell it as a GOTY.

Let's subtract a point for bad AI, it's really bad, all shooter mechanics suffer from this.
Another minus point for the bad interface. The inventory is just unpleasant, it's huge, on 85% of the screen you have a model and only somewhere in the corner of the screen you have a description of the item, it's very uncomfortable. Waiting for mod.
And why can I scroll the mouse closer to the planet on the global map, but I can’t move away from the planet with the mouse scroll?
Subtract another half point for space. Why is he needed in the game in this form? The essence of your ship is lost, because you are in space for very little time, there is simply nowhere to fly. And the movement comes down to fast travel, you see the ship only on landing, sadly.
And of course, minus a point for Russian localization. All players in the CIS region were affected by the removal of localization from the game. But fortunately there is already a mod with DeepL.

However, very interesting to play, Low rating due to bugs that can be fixed, which I hope. Thanks for game.

Bethesda fails to deliver the sense, the illusion, of open world exploration. It's shockingly devoid of creativity and sincere passion. There are 3000 planets but it could as well have been infinitely many because the planets are nothing more than a procedurally generated rendered environment box you load into by pressing a button. With nothing in them. Yes there are technical hurdles in building a truly open world experience, but as a game developer it's your job to create that illusion.

But it's not just the exploration that's a complete failure. it's actually every facet of the game. The writing, the combat encounters, the environments, the NPCs. Nothing shows deeper commitment or passion. It's cliched, bland and sterile. And just not fun.

But the worst part is how Bethesda chose to market this. Clearly there is some PR bot farm shenanigans going on. This explains the strong counter reactions and all the ugliness surrounding this release. It's a disgusting practice and Bethesda still hasn't learnt yet that it hurts them more than helps. Maybe they've learned their lesson this time.

Bottom line is. this game is at its core a first person shooter with a lot of loading screens, a few rpg elements and some side minigames. With bad enemy ai. Avoid if you like previous Bethesda rpgs or Space exploration games. Actually just avoid.

The roleplaying in starfield is not just limited to the role that your character plays within the story, the game allows you to truly be a person within a world. Baldurs gate 3 was a tremendous acheivement, but leaving the beat and path and being an employee of the world is not possible, in starfield all of it is possible. A game is not defined by individual design choices, it is defined by the sum of it's parts.

I dont care what the marketing was for the game or about features that people think every space should have. I care that I keep wanting to come back to a universe that is addictive and beautiful. No game is perfect but this one is almost perfect for me.

Bland, boring and unfortunately uninteresting. Game feels like an over modded Skyrim, way better graphics but without the atmosphere. There's really too much in the game to do, countless side quests with maybe unique stories but I personally wish there was less content with higher quality.

Im reviewing Starfield mainly in comparison to previous Bethesda titles and other open world games. I also have zero interest in the foolish console wars or arguing about pronouns. Starfield in many ways is a great step forward for Bethesda Game Studios. Starfield in many ways is a great step forward for Bethesda Game Studios. The environments are beautifully rendered, the particle effects are good, and the voice acting is better(though still not great). Its also been remarkably stable with few game breaking bugs.

That said, Starfield is just not exciting to play. Gone is the sense of freeform exploration from previous titles. In order to go anywhere of note, you simply have to fast travel and endure some of the least inspired space combat I have seen in a very long time. There's only so many times I can fly in a straight line against braindead ai, deplete shields with lasers and then switch to missiles before I just avoid space combat altogether.

When you actually get your destination(via fast travel of course), you are shown exactly on the planet where you should land. Mining site here, abandoned mech lab there, etc... After landing, enemies nearby will inexplicably have zero awareness that a huge spaceship just landed, and will wait for you to kill them. The same goes if you dock with another ship or starstation...

After you kill all of the enemies with typical Bethesda AI at the closest point of interest, you are treated to roughly a 2km by 2km area to walk around in before you hit an invisible wall. Contained in this area is almost entirely nothing. There are usually 3-4 very recycled things you can find, and they all feel jist as soulless as any of the radiant stuff that was in Skyrim or FO4. Very little feels hand placed or interesting. Whats worse, these huge areas can only be explored ON FOOT. Three hundred years in the future, and we dont have moon rovers or some other wheeled vehicle? Also, we dont have a god damned map that shows anything beyond just preordained points of interest? The first couple of planets were bearable, but this cycle gets old very quickly.

If you chose to land on an unmarked area of a planet, you will find almost nothing. The same rocks, plants and occasional aliens will be strewn about with little purpose other than to be easily farmed for materials.

Cities are also boring and uninspired. Most of the NPCs walking around are essentially filler, usually just named "citizen" and tossed into a random appearance generator. Most of them just walk around aimlessly, not interacting with their environment at all. Again, compare this to previous titles, where NPCs had a schedule they would adhere to. Even though it was simple, it brought some life to settled areas. Seeing named people chop wood, or go to an inn felt good.

I find myself missing the moment you leave the vault in fallouts 3 and 4, or leaving custody in Morrowind, Oblvion and Skyrim. That immediate sense of being able to just wander. Its really the thing thay kept me interested in those games well after the usually mediocre main quests were done. The exploration and ability to just get lost was the main pull. Starfield doesnt let you get lost, unless you are trying to find a shop in a city(again, no useful surface map).

Honestly Im not disappointed that Bethesda released "another Bethesda game", Im upset they didnt. I put hundreds of hours into their previous titles, and frankly after playing starfield for less than 50, I would rather go back to any of them and get lost again.

Combat felt a little underwhelming, getting bored of the bullet sponge enemies with damage numbers and health bars in games, was ok when it was new (The Division etc), now just feels tedious. Main characters are good, well voiced by some of the original Bethesda actors, story was fair, bugs & glitches as expected but not game breaking, didn't like the constant inventory management to keep within the weight constraints, sure, could have used console commands but I feel that cheapens the experience, personally waiting on a survival mode to be added or modded and I'll be back to have another go. I didn't have many technical issues, think it CTD once in the whole 40+ hours, ran at around 50 - 60fps most of the time so looks like I didn't have to upgrade my PC as Todd so eloquently suggested. I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
