Story is decent with great moments but is stunted by Blizzard's design philosophy. From pre-launch to Season 1, the management of the game has been a fiasco, with a sham of a tournament, frequent crashing (which makes Hardcore mode terrifying to consider) that was not solved as promised with v1.1.0, and tonedeaf patches seemingly intentionally meant to stunt the community's progress and strongarm players into exposure to monetization. The more i play this game, the more its apparent that it was pushed out incomplete, or intentionally gutted to 'sell' improvements in future versions for retention. I can't even find youtube video's out there with a positive air to them to keep me feeling at least neutral about a game which's frequent memory leaks barely permit me to play. Tell Rod to get his head out of his Malignant Tunnel and go fix this **** game. Expand

    - The gameplay has a good base
    - The very start and end of the campaign are good

    Now the bad :
    - The reste of the campaign is a meaningless blob
    - The game tries REALLY hard to look complex and deep with weird affixes on items but is actually shallow
    - The open world is just a way to justify chores to impose on the player before they can enjoy "the game"
    - Nothing actually feels really good. That's harsh but here's what I mean :
With the world and dungeons automatically scaling with your level, reaching a sweet upgrade in your talents makes no difference in the feeling of your fights. The same is true with gear, your get biggers stats but the enemies too. The wolves of the start of the game too, they will always be at your level. What a way to feel your progress !
Also most of the gear looks ... Too realistic ? There's no fantasy in the gear you find, and they all look like the boring grey boot you found in your first chest.
The game imposes you a lot of thing you will have to do before accessing the endgame which is SUPPOSED to be the sweet spot. And before you inflict yourself with tense if no hundreds of hours to get there, let me tell you, it's not. It's currently grinding dungeons. Which by the way are bad and boring and make you track back all the time and complete stupid objectives.

Also there is no actually sweet Legendary equipment. Most new effect is so conditional that they are a best boring and at worst just very bad. Unlike D3 for instance where I was excited to find some uniques because they allowed some sweet unique builds. OH I ALMOST FORGOT. Even if we had sweet unique legendaries, you couldnt do that because after a while the investment in your paragon board is so heavy that it would be easier to build another new character with a new build thant to respect the one you spent hundreds of hours on. I know, that's what we all asked for right ?

You thought that was bad ? Here's another :
You thought 70$ for an ... OK-ish game is expensive ? LOL Now you gotta add 10$ for each season if you don't want to be stuck with majorly lackluster rewards on your season. Season which has a very underwhelming new mechanic to boot. That's ... Almost OK in a F2P game but in a 70$ game, WHO ARE THEY KIDDING?!

Honestly if you want to play a relaxed arpg keep playing Diablo 3, if you like complexity stay on PoE and stop making my mistake and giving a chance to Blizzard, they are the worst.

It used to a be a great RPG experience of leveling up, getting better items, and then finding some cool stuff for each class. The story lines were great. Then came D4...

I used this as a guide for my Ice Sorc. (https://www.thegamer.com/diablo-4-sorcerer-ice-shards-build-guide/)

Visuals - Stunning! The game looks awesome!

Sound - The game is missing the iconic Diablo background sound track! I'm surprised they didn't use it anywhere!

    Story - I don't know. That's just it, I can't finish the game!

Game Play - Since the new patch 1.1, my character (Ice Sorc) can't do anything! I used to be able to handle a crowd of enemies with some ease or even some challenge with elites. Now forget it...I can't even handle 5 low level clans in the open maps and Dungeons, quests, and story line cannot be completed! They NERFd the hell out of me! I'm useless now!

My ~30 level Sorc would deal about 300 per Ice Shard, so about 1500 per enemy shot. Now I'm down to 250 (1250 Total) and the health for the bad guys went up about 15%. That makes my char 35% weaker! But wait...there is more! Now my cooldown was about 1-2 seconds, now it's 3! So...

    Before Patch
    1500 Damage Per Second
    ~1.5 second cool down
    Normal Enemy Health
CAN kill single enemies from distance before they get close enough.

    After Patch
    1250 Damage per Second
    ~3 second Cool Down
    Increased enemy health
CAN'T kill single enemies from distance before they get close enough.

So i have to run around, jump freeze, run away, all while my cooldowns are ready, then BAM the monsters on top of me again...

    UNPLAYBLE NOW! FIX IT!

Build up the bad to make it better, don't tear down the good. I've been playing since Diablo II. I almost deleted my Sorcerer and uninstalled this game. But I have faith that yalls at Blizzard can fix it.

For context, I played Diablo 2 extensively. I played Diablo 3 and all expansions extensively. And I was a pre-order victim of Diablo 4. I have a level 80 rogue on the enteral realm and a level 25 rogue on Season 1.

The overall game is executed well in that it is mostly performant. I like the switch to a live service model. I also think that the main campaign storyline and cinematics are the best they've been since Diablo 2. This compliments are the best I can give.

Eternal realm characters will run out of meaningful things to do starting around level 70. Many players have acknowledge a "rinse and repeat" formula for endgame and I can absolutely confirm this experience. What was great about the previous games was that while grindy, the hunt for great items made the time spent worth it. I am not sure how this team got loot so wrong, but it's not as rich as previous Diablo games. Arguably, the loot and item system is actually not even as good as Borderlands games, which borrowed heavily from the early Diablo games. It's one of a few things you wouldn't expect the dev and design team to miss. And miss they did. Which begs the question: why am I grinding through dungeons if the the reward system is so bad?

Season 1 only released yesterday and I already have a level 25 Rogue. I'm not sure I'll be coming back to Season 1 after yesterday's binge for the same reason as mentioned above: there isn't enough to do and there isn't enough to motivation to continue. The Malignant Hearts partially compensate for the heavy nerfs from the unpopular patch, but even these lose their new luster pretty quickly, and there are so few of them, and several offer buffs you'd never choose if you had a choice. Again, the loot and reward systems aren't compelling for a game franchise known for creating really fun and viable builds, and the endgame grind is so slow now that unlocking buffs through paragon boards means most of you (and I do mean statistically darn near all of you) reading this will never be able to achieve your build potential before the season ends in October. Even Diablo 3 seasons were better executed than this, which gets to my main criticism...

Diablo 4 lacks innovation and feels thin, chincy, flimsy and neutered as a result -- especially once you reach mid and endgame where the lack of innovation creates a boring "seen this before" experience. There are so many great ideas out there, ones that Blizzard probably considered at various points internally, and would mean so much to the community but also to their monetization and retention strategies. Examples include: the map is underutilized; world events are poorly timed; the commerce system is 20 years old and has somewhere between 3-5 currencies; co-op scaling is silly and has similar issues to the lackluster loot and reward system... I mean, we're talking about a $1B game 8 weeks after launch.

Why does a triple A game still feel like it's working out beta issues? The worse question is: why did they get so much wrong?

Oh sorry, they might as well not exist with that kind of drop rate... Oh! Shakogate happened. That fiasco left a bad taste in my mouth and I still feel second-hand embarrassed about it. Then patch 1.1 hits.. wow, talk about a middle finger to the player base! That completely gutted my class, my build and my overall game play experience. What was a slog before is now a corpse drag. Everything is longer, slower and harder. That's not fun. Imagine working hard for something and being proud of your earnings only for it to be stripped away. Without warning, I might add. it was mostly ok pre season 1 because we were patiently waiting and trying things before the seasons ( level 50 to 100 was still a chore doing the same Nightmare dungeons over and over ).
But now , the seasonal quest is like over in a couple of hours , letting us only with the new malignent gem system , a big nerf on the said OP builds , and as i progressed as level 40 , in unlocked the xp bonus ...... 3% ....... seriously ????????
We're in 2023 , we have lots of other games to play , we need to xp faster and to have FUN while doing it.
The game is not for casuals except if you rely on maxroll OP builds , but then they changed the meta again? i wish all builds would be viable as long as you spent your points and gear smartly but that's not the case ..... u have to go OP build and for that u have to grind for god rolls and uniques, and that wouldn't be that bad coz it is a diablo game but the gear is only good when level 100 ( i mean 725+ ) so why make it such a boring chore to get there.
helltides and world bosses also drop nothing good, rarely cosmetics , and almost never a good legendary or unique, they die in seconds in T4 when Uber Lilith one shot you at level 100 with a good twisting blade poison build......
I just don't get it ..... isn't a game suppose to deliver fun ? it is a boring fest for now.
only campaign is nice, then secondary quests ( but u get tired of it ) , renown will get boring in seasons if it implies to do all the same quests again.
diablo 2 is an old game , and diablo 3 was actually fun after a bad start. But this at the moment .... they are more interested by microtransactions ( they just made new loading screen where you can see only your character ... i can see only one reason for that when they don't adress content issues or ultra slow leveling ).
will probably be casualized as diablo 3 was. The game has potential, but it will be only when they will realize they are loosing their player base out of boredom

As you grow, you find that enemies scale with you, so you get weaker and weaker and you level up, only having the upper hand on some level up capstones. Same with items. The vast majority of item effects are just stat changes, very few have interesting effects that change how you play. And if you find something you like, there is a 50/50 that is a non viable build that you wouldn't know is horrible until you search for guides. Not to mention some classes are vastly weaker than others.
End game is grindy in a bad way, easily making it boring and not worth after the story is done. Side question are repeated over and over, same for dungeons and end game events.
Add that to the new Season 1, in which everything was nerfed to make it grindier and make players weaker, just signs for a continuation of a bad gameplay.

However, once you get past the aesthetics, Blizzard drastically missed the mark on itemization, end game content and progression, boring dungeon backtracking, no loot filter, no searching inventory, punishing build exploration, not having multiple viable builds per class, annoying quests that have dialog you cant skip, tedious explode on death mechanics (3 times?!), level scaling in all content, almost no social features, no trading even with people in your party, and so much more. And originally they were moving towards a 3rd person Diablo vs top down...

Despite all that, I was holding out hope for Season 1 since they seemed open to criticism, but not only did they do minimum effort by blanket tweaking existing item stats and skills, they did so in a way that was full nerf (minus the new socket gems). The worst part, is so many issues were already addressed in some form in Blizzard's own games (searching stash or Kanai's cube in D3, runewords in D2, etc), but that knowledge was not leveraged. This is an EA's Anthem-like example of the project having terrible direction at the high level... and I am sure issues were brought up by devs and ignored or pushed to the backlog.

As a game dev and long time Diablo player, I will be skipping this Season, and doubt they will have any substantial updates until maybe Season 4. See you in a year.

    • Underwhelming game at the moment. Lame campaign
    • Great visuals, good performance overall but lacks content.
    • First season is very dull, it needs way more content for what it costs
    • I didn't like the paid battle pass option, it feels very unpleasant after paying full price for the game (Game costs R$350,00 in Brazilian currency. For comparison, our minimum wage is around R$ 1350,00).

I would definitely ask for a refund if possible
I'll change my review if seasons get any better

At the release of the game it was going farily well. Characters felt powerful while you lv up. Latest patch absolutely destroyed the * fun* aspect of the game. The countless hours you put into the game and grinding for gear became useless after the patch. Characters are 50 to 60 percent weaker and it takes so much longer leveling up when you die so much faster now because of the decrease of power! I'm sad to say the developers literally told us fans that they want to force you to play other builds and will nerf your current build if they feel fit at any time. If you enjoy playing a game where your hard work gets deleted and you have to make changes every patch then this game is for you. Sadly the game drifted away for what fans wanted and now we have weaker characters with no timeline on when a fix is coming or even if one is coming at all. Expand

i felt this game could've been so much more, however, execution fell flat. since Diablo 3 the devs have tried to go in a different direction with Diablo, they need to go back to the roots of the first two titles and abandon the thought of an "action RPG" because Diablo 3 and 4 lack good Action. "Skill zigzag/Tree" is a joke, Items suck, they need more variety. and i just hate how thei felt this game could've been so much more, however, execution fell flat. since Diablo 3 the devs have tried to go in a different direction with Diablo, they need to go back to the roots of the first two titles and abandon the thought of an "action RPG" because Diablo 3 and 4 lack good Action. I won't buy any more Diablo titles as long as they continue these substandard Diablo titles. Expand

Not a review bomber over the patch. I don't care about the patch because honestly I haven't been able to muster up the interest or energy to force myself to play long enough to reach high enough level for it to matter.

After the streamlined arcade game that was Diablo 3, Diablo 4 is an improvement. However, it's only that; an improvement over Diablo 3. Anyone who was looking for some
Not a review bomber over the patch.

Anyone who was looking for some manner of return to D1/D2, even in a small way, is going to be massively disappointed.

Virtually no D1/D2 gameplay elements make a comeback here. Instead, the mistakes made with D3 are mostly fixed or otherwise improved. As such, there's no identifying items, no scrolls of town portal, it's free and unlimited instead, no stat leveling, no weapons for everyone.

Combat is more varied now, as there's actually a use for more types of attacks and spells rather than havin to rely only on splash damage attacks to deal with the endless swarms like D3. There's still no real Attack button so your Sorcerers and Necromancers still can't use swords and spears and shields, but at the very least they actually hold their equipped weapons when performing their skills/spells, instead of havin them disappear like in D3.

The D3 "Infinite Potion" system is back, although at the very least they make it so that health pickups do not automatically heal you but give you "potions", of which you can hold 4-5 charges to heal when you need. If you run out of potion charges, you can't heal. It's a rather clumsy attempt to be more like D1/D2 without abandoning the streamlining of D3.

Unfortunately it seems they either ran out of ideas with the skills or ran out of time to make them feel particularly different. Worst offender I can see thus far is the Necromancer havin many different selectable skills that all basically amount to "Hold out hand and a colorful wave flies at enemy, damage is done".

The Sorcerer/Sorceress has the best skills, with plenty of variety and some D2-era skills returning to flesh it all out properly. Others unfortunately are severely lacking. The Barbarian is just boring, with only 3 shouts and a sequence of generic attacks that mostly amount to "swing weapon in a slightly different way". And they don't even get to use shields.

The Druid as well feels like it was the primary victim of the "ran out of time" hypothesis. Basically, there is no "transform" option for the Druid. Instead, you get a skill that is assigned to Wolf or Bear, and when you use it, you instantly transform into a Wolf or Bear. Then as soon as you use a different skill, you will instantly transform back human. Not only does this look underwhelming but it means you can't mix up skills, or do things like summon or command creatures while in Wolf/Bear form.

The game world itself, so far, has been very underwhelming. There is no more Act system; instead it's one big world, like an MMORPG. You also see other players wandering around at the same time as you, like an MMORPG. They can join in your battles or clog up the merchant's doorways with their 30 skeleton minions. There's also a ton of quests you can track at any time in a list, like an MMORPG. There's also no way of keeping track of completed quests, you can't coordinate sidequests with parties, and oftentimes you will end up with party members missing out on cutscenes or dialogue due to them being out of place. Some reviews I've seen have said you basically need a "designated clicker" because of this idiocy.

tl;dr, the more time I put into Diablo 4, the more miserable the experience gets. Each class has so few actual skills to play with that I'm switching out classes whenever I get bored and thus basically repeating all the starter quests.

By level 25, you've unlocked every possible skill, so all the skill points just go into "make it slightly stronger" or "add some mediocre little buff" for min-max play. There's no sense of POWER in any magic items like in D1/D2; unique items offer boosts like "+2% to Close Attack when Barrier is active" or "+4% to critical with each Core skill hit on a Stunned enemy"

None of that means anything to me. D2 items had things like "Ignore enemy armor", "+50 to strength", "Half poison duration", "50 charges of lvl 20 Teleport". Actual visible benefits.

I've been playing D3 and D2R leading up to D4's release. I finished D3 and put it away. It was fun the first time, but had 0 replayability. D2R I started about a month before D4 came out.

Now almost 2 months after D4 has come out, for every 1 hour I put into D4, I find myself putting 2 hours into D2R, and enjoying it much more.

Diablo 2 Resurrected just has more to offer than Diablo 4 in almost every way. Bigger and more interesting maps, more skills, more items and weapons, more interesting story, no long boring in-game cutscenes, and just a better, more fun experience overall.

This game is trash. Maybe they improve it over time, but I imagine the only thing they will improve on is further monetization. PoE is better in every level. You could buy a 5 dollar game from a small developer that has more depth. The only great thing about this game are the pathetic few cinematics. I generously give it a two, because it is functional...ish.

I enjoyed only the art and atmosphere of this game, also the story a bit. When it comes to bosses and mechanics there is nothing to say more than meh.

Blizzard talked a lot about balance in the latest update, but in my experience, everything is a lot harder to kill than before and gear drops have been worse. I get one shot at full health which is just a ridiculous mechanic. Overall, I'm having to grind way more for garbage gear and get killed way more often. It’s almost like Diablo 4 developers are consciously fighting against everything that made classic Diablo fun. [Issue#262, p.80]

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.

The best Blizzard launch in a long time and a worthy game to be called Diablo.
