I really dislike it, but to change this we're talking about a fundamental shift in our socio-economic circumstances, which is outside the scope of this review for a video game. So, where do we go from here?

The graphics are great. The gameplay is fine. I like this better than 3, by a lot. It's my third favourite Diablo now. The writing... exists.

Listen, this is the best new Diablo we're ever going to get. We now have two great versions of Diablo 2. It's all down-hill from here. Diablo Immortal is going to make more money than all other Diablo's combined, and if there's ever a new one... well, there won't be. There will be more cosmetic options for Diablo Immortal. So enjoy Diablo IV while you can. Treasure it while the servers remain active. Give your character a funny name and run around saying hello to people and never getting a reply. Watch out for the Butcher.

Because this is the last Diablo you're going to get (I hope I'm wrong)

This is what a Diablo game should be. Dark and gritty atmosphere and story, tons of character customization, dedicated pvp areas. 10/10 would recommend to anyone.

There are a lot of issues that hold back this game from being good.
    1. It has to always be online to play. Constant log outs, crashes that make you wait in it's queue. I've had to wait two hours after the game crashed. Should just be able to play offline, the online doesn't add that much to the game honestly

    2. Early release for suckers who give Activision blizzard extra money. Giving players with fomo an extra four days of early grinding is a terrible business practice.
    3. The monetization. The game is changing upwards of 25 dollars for a armor skin in a full priced game lmao. Seriously, it was less then that to buy the necromancer class in Diablo 3, or for a full fleshed out expansion in Diablo 2. You can't unlock the skins in the game either.
Game could of been good but the greed keeps it from a high review. All of the critics that reviewed this game should have to go back and update their reviews

For a major company that took so much time...where is the innovation? Money prevails ts clear to me now... Sad repetitive gameplay...I have played this game hundreds of times in the last 20 years. To be honest it's still kinda addictive...but for how long? Let's see if the end game is worth something.

Not anymore because you have to travel from one hub to another, with completely empty areas in between. And when you eventually reached the dungeon you've been heading to you realized it has exactly the same 5 type of Bosses at the end :( Most of the skill do not feel impactful enough, even though the animation looks nice. Graphics in general? Very uneven; with few breathing ares to majority of okeyish till complete crap... Only in music you can sense a remaining spirit of Sanctuary actually. Long story short: it's a decent game but a terrible Diablo (where in fact from the original Diablo only name left).

The in-game sound and cinematic footage and especially the terrifying atmosphere of the entire map were enough to fascinate me. In many aspects feels like mobile version of Diablo instead of an actual PC release.
    Pros :
-Story has been fine thus far.
    -Animations are pretty smooth.
-No loading screens between zones in the open world but occasionally refuses to grant passage due to the invisible loading screens.
    Cons:
-Map is too big and soulless. Mount after chapter 4 but you have already wasted tons of time running about.
-Combat only total of 5 abilities (basic, core and 2 abilities and one ultimate) right for mobile, not for PC.
-Mob scale with you during story, no power fantasies to be had here. Be it level 10 or level 38 it all feels the exactly the same save for skill points but no big enough change to actually witness mobs dying that much faster.
-Content gets boring and repetitive fast.
-Victim of "Gets better in the late game" syndrome. The game should be at least decent or good from the get go not when you have sunk x amount of hours into it.
-No innovations, only downgrades even when compared to Diablo 3 with the exception of Error 37 which they avoided this time.

To sum it up this is a soulless husk of a game from a game company who were top of their game back nearly 13 years ago who became complacent with the easy money flow from Diablo Immortal.
Just don't buy this game, rather go back to Diablo 3.

There are just too many aspects insufficiently thought through and half-baked or which simply have no proper purpose in this game.

Take the open world for example. What is the purpose of going from an Act-based story with distinct and closed levels, to an open world with a seamless transition from region to region? There simply is none, for the sake of fun. While it might seem it does, especially during the first few hours, the players quickly notices that the open world is just shallow in its current state with nothing to offer and no purpose to be fulfilled. World Events are the only things that could possibly justify the existence of the open world, if they weren't as boring and pointless as they are. The World Bosses are Loot Pinatas that you hit till it dies. Chances of an unsuccessful encounter are slim to nigh inexistant. Same with the Horde Event. It simply isn't suspenseful, nor difficult, nor challenging. It is just a random event you go to and absolutely meaningless. Hell Tides and Strongholds are somewhat better, but cannot compensate the lack of open world activities, with Strongholds being one-time only event with no further importance. You free them and you are done with it. No dynamics and no importance to story or world.
Furthermore, the open world is empty of any other challenges that are not tied to times events. Monster density is low. It is actually so low that you'd be wasting time at any point at which you don't just ride hard to get to the next dungeon.
Of course, Mounts and Skins are more prevalent in an Open World where one can randomly encounter other players. $$$.

Why do I stress the point of open world this much? Because Blizzard made sure to advertise it with every opportunity. And it is simply not as good as they try to make it. Its existence is not justified and Diablo 4 would have been better off being a more classic approach to how story and areas are tied together.

The Itemization lacks depth. Just like in D3, you stack Toughness and Damage as much as you can. There's barely any utility modifiers on items. It is a GearCheck game where your brain is simply not needed beyond thinking up a build (which the aren't many viable ones) or picking one from the dozen websites that offer 'the best farming build'. If you try to make an unconventional build you quickly realize how these attempts will falter easily. The good old Frenzy Barb? Has no place in this game. Because Frenzy is a Generator. And Generator are simply **** by design. They are not meant to be for the purpose of critically damaging the enemy. They are meant to generate buffs, like increased Toughness, or generate Resource, to use with Core Skills. Therefore, all items will be designed around Core Skills, in one way or another. The lack of total skills, not just core skills, also adds to the fact that there's simply not enough diversity when it comes to builds.

Monster diversity is a fake. Yes, there are plenty of different enemies, but they feel the exact same way. Especially in higher levels one will not give two-****s about how to approach a new pack. You go in balls out and give it all you have, spam you Core and activate your ult and chances are high that the pack you've just encountered is dead. Skills that pixel-stack enemies also help.

    There's plenty more, like:
    - the music being generic,
    - the campaign/story being a drag, with missions/quests that are as boring as they could possibly be,
    - boring and repetitive collection of renown
    - PvP being a complete mess
    - social features consisting of utterly pathetic integrations, like the Clan feature that's just a second friendlist and nothing more, the chat being useless and already full of Gold sellers and RM traders and plenty more
    - the QoL not a priority, starting with a bag for Gems, which, as soon as you have 10 of each, you simply don't ever need to pick up again
    - scaling of monsters making leveling up and gaining "stronger" skills feel like nothing, unnoticable, whether you play on level 20 or on level 70, fights will feel the exact same and the difficulty will be indistinguishable,
    - the most boring crafting systems, barely an improvement to that of D3
    - and so much more....

The only way that people really give this an 8+ is because they haven't played this game beyond the campaign or are simply so starved of ARPGs that they don't give a crap about it.

Diablo 4 is the absolute minimum that could have been done, but it is praised by critics as the "holy grail of ARPG".

4/10, but giving it a 0/10 because of all the casuals that give it a 10 without even experiencing the endgame.

There's potential with Season 1 here but overall it feels like another flopped release. Blizzard fanboys will keep buying their overpriced trash and still defend lackluster gameplay and crappy mechanics to their death cause they grew up with the series.

Besides that the game has lackluster build diversity for a 70€ ARPG in 2023, if it was maybe 2012 this would be acceptable i guess.

Besides that the game has lackluster build diversity for a 70€ ARPG in 2023, if it was maybe 2012 this would be acceptable i guess. Gameplay feels slow and whilst this might be cause of the class and build i played. I doubt the generator mechanic will effectively change with many characters.

Endgame feels boring and the endless amount of Blizzard fanboys defending this, don't get me wrong, there is "endgame content" but it boils down to leveling up your stats and nothing more. "That's every APRG", yeah but atleast other ones make it fun instead of doing "Nightmare Dungeons" which are truly a nightmare with the same enemy density as the normal dungeons which where already a sleepfest. Even though this is how many ARPG's function it still feels extremely lackluster compared to other ARPGS.

Not every game needs to go on a power trip, but in Diablo IV i still feel the same at level 70+ as if i was level 20-. Which is to say after you reach level 50ish barely anything will ever change about your build except stats.

No social aspect besides "emotes", zoomed in camera, buggy horse, crappy battlepass system, boring bosses, underwhelming skills that "develop" with legendaries.

I'll give the art team credit though, they put out some amazing results for such a mediocre product. The cutscenes especially deserve praise, even though the story is **** The only reason people are calling it "good" is cause this game was advertised to an audience that plays every mainstream AAA game "FIFA" etc. and ARPG players. No one follows the story in any ARPG for that matter, so not like it makes much of a difference, it's essentially a one and done job.

Do yourself a favour and buy Last Epoch instead or literally go play just about any indie game, as it's guaranteed to leave you with a more sustained and memorable experience then the endless amount of regret you'll wail in of spending 70+€ for this ****

It has, as I said, a more mmo-ish vibe to it and it is definitely far slower paced even at it's fastest point. The slower pace is a good thing for me personally but may not be for everyone.
I am not sure how I feel about the level scaling since it takes wind out of my sails when it comes to power gain. I just don't quite feel like I am getting stronger consistently.
Story is decent to quite good and it feels tonally proper to a Diablo game.
The game has more than enough content and fun enough to more than justify the base buy in price, it is a fully fledged game in all regards with NO p2w as it should be (early access is irrelevant since Seasons are not launched nor is there a ladder (yet)).

That being said, the microtransactions, "cosmetic only" as they may be (for now?), are a significant negative.
I have zero confidence in blizzard not to get even greedier as time passes for the game since they've already added a metric ton of paid cosmetics: premium bp (will become active when Season 1 launches) + many additional shop cosmetics.
If they keep up with the in-game cosmetic equivalent additions and not have all the best looking stuff only in the shop then it will tolerable for me personally. I do not want to have to go to the shop (zero satisfaction) to get that one look I want on my character, I want to earn it in-game.
Doesn't change the fact that many unique looks are/will be paid only, intolerable for many, and legitimately so, I am borderline on this for now.
Is this really the price of having future content?
This game's future will live or die by future updates, if they fail to deliver the cosmetic crap will be even more egregious since they will have failed to justify the additional cost.

To me the game, if I were to ignore the mtx (which is easy to do for now since I am distracted by all the content), would be a 9/10, if I am to take them into account and the fact that I feel the level scaling detracts from the sensation of power progression.. 7.5/10.

I had very high hopes for this game, it didn't meet them. The most fundamental problem is that the game is just not fun to play, it all feels like a chore and you never make any progress. Liliths personality start promising, a demonic, scary but by the end has become a disney character.

The affixes on items are pointless,
2% damage or crowd controlled enemies
    2% damage to vurnable enemies
    2% damage to near enemies
... List goes on with MANY more exactly the same.

The cinematics and music (you have to tweak your audio settings, turn down SFX to ~50% if you wanna hear the music while playing) in this game are fantastic.

All in all the game is not fun, most of the time you are just slowly walking without killing any monster, very sloppy and bland story, game lakes itemization, very good cinematics and music.

    First the disadvantages:
    1. dull depressive music, like in POE (the music in such a game should be frightening, not depressing)

    6. a mediocre plot, like in a cheap TV series. But this is a disease of the entire gaming industry. Exception: Cyberpunk, Portal 2, Talos principle

    Advantages:
    1. graphics, like animated paintings of fantasy masters

Non-innovative, uninspiring, simple, repetitive game. The skills feel unimpactful, the combat feels stiff, the itemizations don't produce an impactful difference. I honestly don't see how this game is much different than Diablo Immortal with a bigger price tag, along with a shop selling skins for $25 for...horse armor. Blizzard's outrageous greed continues while producing subpar games.

The gear itemization and skill tree systems are weak and do not confer enough power to the player.

The world scaling is off, with enemies seeming to scale at the same rate as the player, making it difficult to feel a sense of progress.

It's generally very boring right now, I wish i could refund it but i cannot.

TD; LR: The game is nice, generic but fun, massive time sink if you want something to kill time with.

Currently Lv55 Rogue who has gone through the campaign mode and touched some Nightmare Difficulty stuff.

My very first impression is that the game is beautiful. Lots of things to do, lots of dungeons to explore. The amount of side quests is just mind-blowing. You will probably hit the level cap of your chosen starting difficulty without touching the campaign if you do them all. If you like to roam around and discover new things, THIS is the game for you to kill a lot of time with.

On the other hand, from an old timer's perspective, the game doesn't feel as "hack'n slash-ish" as its predecessors. This is probably because there is a level-scaling system that adjusts everything to your current level, so the higher your level, the beefier the monsters become. The solution is to farm for good equipment and upgrade it to overcome such a situation. The reason why they implemented this feature is beyond my understanding, but it is there.

Social activities. Although everything can be done solo, this is an online game. You will see other players in town, on your travels. You can fight in open world events while not in a group. However, you will need to form a party if you want to dwell into dungeons with them.
Btw, there is no global chat built into the game. Only local, whisper, guild, and group chat.

Let's talk about the endgame. After you finish the Campaign mode, you can open up the Nightmare mode, which takes some work. Then you will be given a fair number of options to farm more higher level gear. There is a "Helltide" which randomly turns an area into a "corrupted" state from time to time, you visit the area, kill monsters, farm enough specific currency to open chests in the area to get a random Legendary, etc.

There is also a Sigil System where, you use a (random dropped or crafted) sigil to empower a certain dungeon stated in the sigil. The dungeon would become +n level higher than you depending on its Tier. The higher the tier is, the better the drop it became but the mobs hit harder.

There is also the "Tree of Whispers" which unlocks after you complete the campaign. Raids are there as usual. PVP is where you test how good your equipment and skills are. All of the endgame content except Raids can be done solo. But I would recommend getting a group to do them because it's theoretically a lot faster.

By the way, I haven't opened the next difficulty yet. Looking forward to it.

The game may not be perfect, at most a very generic game from a 21st century gaming perspective. If this game happens to win the GOTY 2023, the award result is definitely rigged. But I can promise you that the game is good enough to keep you busy for a while.

Of course there are negatives about the game... it isn't perfect by all means, but it sure is a really great start for what's to come with Diablo 4.

    - One of the obvious downsides to Diablo 4 are the unstable network connections and server lag that happen here and there. If you're on PC a lot of that went away when i took off cross platform connection (hopefully they will fix it within the next few days/weeks).

    - I'm not a really big story guy myself when it comes to games, but the story did feel very short for what it is. As the game was made to also suit more casual and new players, I wish they also showed more of how/why sanctuary was made, more on lilith's and inarius' relationship and more overall important acts that explained the lore to new players that don't already know about it. It felt as though act 2 to 5 were just filler acts and didn't really introduce new important characters other than a few bosses here and there. As i said myself though, I don't care much about stories when i play games so this wasn't really a deal breaker for me. If you're really big into story you might find D4 a bit bland and boring, but I will say that Diablo's lore as a whole is a great one to look into.

    - I wish there was something in the D4 that visually showed you were getting a lot more powerful in the game (this has nothing to do with level scaling that will be in the positive section). As you level up a certain skill in the tree or add better overall stats to your items it should visually show that you are getting a lot more stronger by having more visually intensive skills. One of the things that D3 did right was make you feel like you were getting powerful as you progress further into the game (just please don't add items with 4000% bonuses in D4 thanks).

    Now for the positives:

    - The graphics don't have to be talked about much as everyone knows they are amazing which i agree with. I'm glad they are going back to the dark and gloomy feel of Diablo 2 while introducing a more modern and natural look to the game, compared to the cartoony look of D3. Nothing in the game that feels out of place when it comes to the graphic choice.

    - Love how soon end game starts in my personal opinion. Once you're done with the game you still have around 60 or so levels of game time.

    - I do like how legendary items work in the game and how you can obtain/craft them very early to already start working on your build. People who are having scaling issues just aren't building their characters right and don't understand that Diablo is a stat building game. I haven't had issues going into the torment difficulty and i entered it before hitting level 60. I will agree that the game is a lot more challenging than Diablo 3, which i really been enjoying. It feels a lot more rewarding completing nightmare dungeons and I really love the new twist on the paragon system. instead of completing rifts to level up gems that go into your items. You level up glyphs that go into your paragon board.

    - DIablo 4 just gives a lot more room to work on more unique builds. You could follow a guide at first than develop to making a build that suits more of your play style.

    - Lastly, I love that they are forcing online play. I've always played the Diablo series majority of the time alone and it's seems like I've been pushed a lot more in the game to play with friends. I do wish in the future that they do add 8 player (bigger group) features, like how you could set up servers to have 8 people in Diablo 2. Yes they have world bosses with 10 people but those other 9 people aren't your friends.

Blizzard has gone and turned Diablo into a Live-Service game now. They slapped a bunch of F2P monetization into a $70+ game. Along with a frankly pointless "MMO" shared overworld to make sure people who spend money are around people who don't. Even conveniently planned the "early access" for deluxe edition buyers to begin on a friday and run all weekend. Extra layer of FOMO with a $20 pricetag.

Wouldn't be surprised if this went F2P in a year or two. But would the game be better (right now) if it was Free? Nah. Will it be better in 2 years if it goes free? Maybe, but unlikely. Paid DLC is probably also a thing so the longer you wait, the better the deal you get and more "finished" the game is.

Diablo 4 Review: A Disappointing Departure from the Series' Legacy

    Introduction:
Diablo 4, the highly anticipated addition to the iconic action RPG franchise, unfortunately fails to capture the magic of its predecessors. While it boasts impressive graphics and cinematics, the game falls short in several key areas. Drawing upon my expertise of being a Diablo enthusiast, I will delve into the details of Diablo 4's shortcomings and highlight how it diverges from the series' rich legacy.

    Graphics and Visual Design:
Visually, Diablo 4 is appealing, going back to the the dark and gritty aesthetic of its predecessors, but it carries a noticeable World of Warcraft influence. Some spell animations lack the impact seen in Diablo 2 Resurrected, with cartoony spells reminiscent of Diablo 3. Moreover, the generic item graphics detract from the unique item identification experience found in previous titles, and the lack of variety in monster designs is disappointing.

    Gameplay Mechanics:
Diablo 4's gameplay mechanics present significant issues that hinder its potential. Characters are restricted to specific equipment choices, limiting build diversity and preventing unique playstyles like a melee sorceress wielding a sword and shield. This restriction feels outdated, considering the flexibility offered by games released over two decades ago. Furthermore, the absence of a basic attack and the reliance on skills tied to weapon damage undermine the RPG systems and result in poorly designed mathematical frameworks. This departure from Diablo 2's distinct magic and physical attack mechanics diminishes the game's depth and engagement.

    Skill Variety and Gameplay Diversity:
The game's limitation of six active skills at a time, compared to Diablo 2's allowance of up to 16 active skills, curtails the potential for diverse and dynamic gameplay. Diablo 4's gameplay revolves around waiting for cooldowns and utilizing a generator attack during downtime, lacking the constant spellcasting and action-packed gameplay of its predecessor.

    Replay Value and World Design:
Diablo 4's replay value is limited, with an endgame that lacks depth and character progression that quickly stagnates. The absence of procedural generation, a hallmark of the series, and the reliance on recycled assets contribute to a forgettable game world. The static open world with scattered MMO events fails to evoke the immersive and dynamic experience players expect from the franchise.

    Itemization and Power Scaling:
Diablo 4's itemization is disappointing, with convoluted stats that hold little meaning beyond superficial fluff. The game's focus on items dictating builds rather than enhancing chosen builds detracts from the depth and complexity found in ARPGs. Additionally, the flawed math system tied excessively to weapon damage, similar to Diablo 3, creates scaling issues and fails to demonstrate improvements from past iterations.

    Conclusion:
Diablo 4, despite its flashy graphics, ultimately falls short of its predecessors' legacy. It fails to deliver the depth, complexity, and engaging mechanics that Diablo 2 excelled at. The restrictive gameplay choices, lackluster itemization, and absence of procedural generation contribute to a hollow experience. While the game may still appeal to those new to the series or seeking an action-focused experience, fans of Diablo 2 and its rich sandbox mechanics will likely find Diablo 4 disappointing. As an avid Diablo expert, I rate Diablo 4 as a mere shadow of its former glory.

However, the truth is, Diablo IV totally nails it in its own genre. I know people might get confused when it comes to genre of Diablo IV, and I am definitely not a very pro game reviewer, and this is just my own opinion. Diablo IV is now ranked 2nd on my MMORPG list (come afters FFXIV), and the 1st on Roguelike game.

If you have read other negative comments here, and getting worried about if you should get Diablo IV, I'm telling you that Diablo IV has not been treated fairly in this time. If Hogwart's Legacy is getting praised on its openworld design, Diablo IV should earn the same credit too. Although the roguelike nature of this game might limit how player explore the world, once again, they nail it in its own genre.

I am now lvl 72, reaching endgame. I already tried a "meta" build but i swap to another on my rogue based on a bow and it works! It seems that you can really do stuff with a little bit of brain, time, compo and gold. Great game, great H&S, feeling in the game are INSANE.

Diablo IV is a vast improvement to the franchise, perfectly mixing the best features of 2 and 3, while adding lots of things on top that make the experience even better. The story is great, the combat is fun and deep, the world offers great explorations and things to do. Highly Recommended. It's sad that gamers, who have issues with certain aspects can't be reasonable with their reviews.

I played for about 40 hours. Like D3, D4 can't find a trace of past glory in the past. They are parasites of masterpieces made by their predecessors. Honestly, it's more fun to watch D2's Cinematics.

As a huge ARPG fan, Diablo 4 was a big letdown. There was so much potential during the betas only to see Blizzard take a very unfortunate yet predictable direction opposite of player feedback.

The biggest issue in D3 was that player power was exclusively gear based until extremely high paragon levels at which point other builds worked. This was by far the #1 complaint of players. This remains the case in D4. There was potential to see huge power in paragon trees and the skill tree, but most of it is relatively minor with a handful of potent points spent throughout the leveling process. This means a "build" is less impactful than just getting synergistic gear, and the result is whatever "build" has the most synergies ends up being the strongest build rather than being given a choice.

This illusion of choice was a big complaint during the D4 betas, and it's still one of the biggest problems after launch. So many skill points and paragon options are bad, making everything feel relatively forced. We left feedback that most of this stuff needed to be buffed, but instead Blizzard nerfed some of the really cool skills and we were left with even less choice. A big yikes there. This also messed with balance, and nothing feels worse in an "MMO-lite" ARPG than picking the wrong class because your class sucks. Everyone wants to feel powerful, and in a good ARPG everyone is powerful.

The level scaling didn't go away or have meaningful limitation to it leading to issues changing builds if you lose power, making farming essentially impossible. It feels terrible in solo play as was mentioned repeatedly during betas, but opens up parties to low-level carry. Leveling up should not be a punishment. This also negatively impacts end-game. D4 shipped with an incredibly poor endgame, amounting to essentially just watered down D3 grifts or PoE maps, but there's no real reason to do these since enemies outside of this end-game content scale beyond story level, all the way up to 95. This isn't even a problem in D3 because while it has scaling, you so quickly exceed the scaling of enemies in adventure mode or even torment XVI that everything but high GRs is trivial. In D4, you can easily end up in a situation where your sigils are weaker than world and regular dungeon enemies, and therefore less rewarding.

The narrative storytelling is heavily weakened by the open-world aspect of the game. Other games that have done this have also sacrificed story for exploration and gameplay. While this works for games like BOTW where they absolutely nailed exploration, it doesn't when there's almost nothing in the world for you to do. BOTW doesn't have a meaningful story. D4's story is weak and forgettable, and the narrative set pieces suffer the same weakness. Think back to D2 or D3 or even PoE. You can picture in your mind exactly how the story flowed between acts because of the narrative set pieces you remember. Do you remember anything like that in BOTW? I don't, and I 100%ed it twice and beaten it dozens of times, all in entirely different ways. The same goes for D4. But collecting a Lilith statue or clearing out a stronghold is even less memorable than a shrine or even some korok seeds.

The game looks great, it sounds great, and the gameplay is responsive and fun. That's about where the positives end. For all the talk of a "smooth launch" the game still crashes regularly and has a lot of bugs found in beta. And if your connection is spotty, it's unplayable, even as a solo game. The rest of the game is a lackluster imitation of better ARPGs and overall D4 is just a forgettable mess of what was potential. They might fix most of this in future expansions and seasons, but you're paying $70 for the potential that spending more money in the future might fix the problems. That's unacceptable.

Tl;dr While the cinematics and impactful action show exceptional craftsmanship, they barely conceal what Diablo 4 is at its core: A grimdark demon cookie clicker that revolves around user retention and mindless busywork.

Monetisation isn't the only problem of D4 but still a central one. When a 69$ game (at minimum) features in-app-purchases at 99$, that you can buy an unlimited number of times, and an upcoming battle pass, it's not just about "cosmetics". It's about its consequences for game design, about the fear of missing out, about game mechanics that try to nudge you towards paying that 99$ regularely. It's about gameplay that turns into a chore you endure because of sunk cost fallacy. And yes, that's exactly how D4 quickly starts to feel.

Setting and atmosphere: D4 is "dark" and "gritty" again. Well yes, the writers can now comfortly tread the well-trodden paths in the wake of Game of Thrones, Witcher 3, and their many copycats. But there is one very essential difference in comparison to the first two Diablo games: D4 takes itself way, way too seriously.

By doing that, regrettably, D4 entirely misses and contradicts the tone of the original Diablo games, as the reviewer of The Guardian benevolently put it. D1 and D2 had a "dark" setting but they were also over-the-top and hilarious. They relied on their simple setting. Just like Doom or "Heavy Metal F.A.K.K.". Yes, a big evil hidden somehwere below the church of a once tranquil village were more than enough to build up tension and an eery atmosphere. D1 and D2 didn't need tragic family dramas or discussion about overcoming human nature. The only thing that really is horrible in D4 is its attempt to add "deep quality HBO content" to a simple formula, resulting in an extremely shallow and heavily misinformed kitchen psychology. Even Genshin Impact had a more profound side story about humanity emancipating from gods and demons.

Considering lore, D4's main antagonist Lilith (and Inarius) were hinting at an elegant solution to the games' central conflict with a nod to the ambivalent myths the lore has been inspired by. But not in the days of live service games where conflicts must go on forever.

D1 was a dive into a crypt of ever increasing madness, D2 was an adventurous trek, hunting the "dark wanderer" which caused mayhem wherever he went, always just a step ahead, with interesting locations that build up on each other. D4's battles are fought on a big, grey, largely indistinctive "open world" battlefield and in dungeons populated with arbitrary packs of demons and monsters.

Multiplayer: Also gone are the days of casually joining a game called "Act 1 Andariel" or "Act 3 Quest 2" with your friend, easily grouping up with up to 8 players. I remember D2 games as exactly that: Fun parties most of the times, like randomly joining a party of 6 barbarians all shouting war cries, whirling and jumping around. Just join a game, say "Hi!" and write "TP plz", and off you go - fun times. I never played alone even with the option to play offline. Now you have to look for other groups and players doing the same quests, join a clan, ask around, invite them, etc. It's possible but needlessly complicated and it's no wonder then that even many streamers play this game alone or just with their buddy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review contains spoilers. An improvement from all they did wrong with Diablo3 but D3 brought the franchise so much back that even a step forward is still far behind what it should be.

    They didn’t took any risk

    - itemization: bland, soulless, boring
    - story: decent until your character took the damn stupid decision to refuse Lilith offer
    - campaign: so many unskippable dialogues… escort mission and low mob density
    - skill system: boring and limited. The 4basic, 4 core system makes it have max 1-2 decent build per class. There is no possible theorycrafting or diversity possible. The generator/spender system has been a franchise killer

Combat: the amount of CC you have to endure is killing the fun, especially for melee. It doesn’t matter to have unstoppable 4 sec… you’ll be Cc for the rest of the Cooldown of your skill. Pvp is decent

    Endgame: boring same crap

    Crafting: non-existent

Qol: lacks so much of it… no map overlay, no gem tab, no proper search function

Ui: this game was created for console and its limitations, so when ported to pc it feels so much shallower because Pc can do so much more

I was on the fence about buying this game at all but I bought the $100 (USD) ultimate edition so I could play with my friends pre-launch. After forcing myself to keep with the druid for 2+ hours, I decided I couldn't take it any longer and made a new character.

1 minute log-in queue. 'Ok, not a big deal, it's opening weekend and only 1 minute.'
    ---> 'log-in pending'
---> several minutes later I gave up and tried to log in again hoping it was a bug. I got the exact same result.
---> I then tried closing and opening the game in hopes it was a local bug that could be fixed with a reload of the game.
---> I then got a 24-MINUTE LOG-IN WAIT (there were plenty of people struggling with this same thing, see other accounts of it online). Frustrated, and needing to leave to do other things IRL, I quit.

I decided I would seek a refund. I will again point out that the ENTIRE reason I bought this early, and as an upgraded edition, was exclusively to play with my friends since they are big Diablo fans. Since I could not play it at all, I requested a refund.

I got two different responses from two different people. The first response was due to "one or more products included in this purchase were already consumed." I didn't use any mounts. I didn't put on any cosmetics. All I can guess is that the 'season pass', or something else, was applied immediately upon purchase meaning from the moment of installation the game would be non-refundable.

The second response was actually quite nicely written and kind, but the end result was the same. This time, the reason was I had too much play time. Ok, they have a 2-hour limit for refunds, I get that. Also, I am standing by my point that buying this early to be able to play pre-launch, something they advertised, AND BEING UNABLE TO LOG-IN AND PLAY, should be plenty of grounds for refund. If you went to a movie and the projector quits half-way through the movie you would seek a refund. As we know by now, however, Blizzard doesn't care at all about things like player satisfaction of purchase, enjoyment of the product, etc. so I am out $100 for a game that can't even log-in regularly.

The game itself wasn't terrible (not that great either...), but the way Blizzard handled this was, as usual, lacking any real care about how it impacts the players so long as they got the money and can legally justify keeping it (refusing refunds).

Regarding the gameplay: As others have said, the customization of skills feels less impactful than D3, the customizations are less interesting that D3, and leveling up doesn't feel like it's adding much each time. I found myself respec'ing my skills over and over trying to get some skills I enjoyed. Also, in D3, I loved playing harder difficulty for better drops and XP. In this one, it feels like the next difficulty up takes 2x the time to kill something but only 20% more XP. I had to set it back to 'Adventure' difficulty to make it at all enjoyable and not feel like a miserable grind with boring, monotonous gameplay.

This game may become great as they update, tweak, and change skills. Or, they won't, and it will stay mediocre as it is.

Graphics are decent, story is decent as well. Basically, if this wasn't made by Blizzard it probably would have been more fun, launched properly (10+ years of server issues at launch of several games shows they don't give a s--- about player satisfaction at launch, they've just created an expectation that they will botch up the launch and it's 'ok'), and had people ready to keep throwing money at them. Instead, Blizzard decides to crap all over the good will of their player base yet again with the mentality 'you aren't going anywhere, who cares.'

I am FINALLY going to learn my lesson, late as it is. I will give them no more money ever again. I hope you too avoid this game and anything from Blizzard as every single year they show us that they don't care about us, so why should we keep giving them our money??

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table.
