This game is not an ARPG, it's just WOW with a diablo skin on it. The level scaling is the DEATH of this game. This is not what Diablo fans wanted.

The leveling structure is extremely gross, and none of the quests have a genuine/interesting feel to them. The graphics are great though!

What I don't get, is why people(developers) try to fix what isn't broken? The stat/skill structure (or gameplay in general) of Diablo 2 for example, was absolutely perfect and could've been used as a template for this game. And how about having Diablo 2 enthusiasts with 100's of hours logged critique the game? We know what the game should feel like and what makes it incredibly re-playable. Perhaps developers "back in the day" used drugs more, allowing themselves to be "more creative?" Who knows.

Best Diablo game since Diablo 2. Finally Blizzard made a good game after YEARS of terrible games like Diablo Immortal, Diablo 4, Overwatch 1 and 2.
The game is excelent but lacks some polishing that hopefully will come in future patches.

Great graphics, even better set and feel, the music and art style are amazing. Big map, great story, good gameplay, challenging and fun.

One of the worst ARPGs that I've ever played, and I've played most.

    Story: meh
    Combat: average at best
    UI: average
    Class progression: below average
    Monetization: In your face

D4 is a sensible successor to the polarizing style and story of D3 although there are a number of aspects to the game that I found disappointing, but not beyond repair or deal breaking. I think the skill tree is a bit too reminiscent of PoE without nearly as many options. The simplification is good, but the skill development feels limited. Item stats are also somewhat confusing and unfamiliar while the crafting system feels unsatisfying and clunky. My last gripe is the visual design of the characters and objects. The color palette and dark atmosphere is fantastic, but the actual rendering of characters, monsters and objects feel lackluster (worse than D2R). I think the strongest suit is the variety in quests and the open world system, which makes the game feel more vast relative to previous titles. Expand

The itemization is beyond silly and the feeling of getting stronger to overcome challenges is all over the place because monsters scale with you. They had D2 as a super solid foundation for an amazing ARPG but there they go again with the D3-like formula of trying to reinvent the wheel without even innovating. Decent game, but definitely overhyped. Graphics are cool, gameplay is fun, the story is good. But there is an overabundence of items and enemies which becomes annoying after a while (very similar to Path of Exile) and the dungeons and events become repetitive. In short, the game is mostly item farming and level grinding. It's worth playing, but definitely it doesn't worth the price of $70.

I think people are hard, the game itself have fantastic graphics and creative content. Everything is much more better than D3. People didn't complain that much back in D2.
Some things could be improved like inventory management, and they probably will, but it doesn't ruin the game and it will certainly be changed soon.

It's truly disheartening to witness the culmination of a 23-year attempt of a revival, only to find that a game with a straightforward concept has been redone twice, both attempts resulting in massive failure. The element of itemization and character scaling, unfortunately, stands as a prime example of woefully inadequate game design.

Get punished to level? No Thanks Stupid Gear stats

I am genuinely impressed with the production quality, improvements and amount of content available in D4 at launch.

D4 has improved upon its predecessor in literally every way and it truly seems like they met their goals of bringing a darker feel like d1/d2, better combat like d3, and a better progression system like d2.

The World: I cannot get over how much better the world feels then any other diablo game. It feels like we are running around an mmo, the verticality that was introduced and all the work you can tell went into every area.. I wonder how much time they spent building it, because it's great.

The Story / Theme: Easily the best story out of the entire diablo franchise(I have PTSD after d3). So many moments i thought 'oh no, they are doing to kill x person off in a dumb way'. It.. never happened. I was surprised, laughed and had my jaw open at some points at well. It was good.

The Gameplay: Combat feels good as it has since d3. Not really much to say here, feels like an improved version of d3s combat.

The Progression / Itemization: They seem to have hit a sweet spot in progression / itemization. Between your skill tree, paragon boards, gems, item upgrades, affix rerolls and legendary power management. Out the gate has much more depth and control then any of the previous games without being too complex.

Verdict: Diablo 4 really has taken the best parts of the previous games and improved upon each of them, some areas have advanced more then others but each has been improved upon. Creating an experience that will serve as a great foundation for them to build upon for years to come. Pair that with their large investment in the franchise working on two seasons and two expansions at any given moment it's looking like diablo 4 will be one of the great ARPGs of our time if the dev team continues to hit their after launch goals with the same quality and passion they did making the base game.

I grinded hundreds of hours in the games before, but this one just isn't fun for me.
    After 6 days already.
There are some points which contribute to this:

#1 The level scaling somehow takes any feeling of progress.
There is a constant mediocre difficulty which does not allow me to progress faster when im good enough equipped or skilled to have a higher risk/reward.

#2 The cap stone dungeon progression.
In the games before you can play the stories and level on a higher difficulty to progress on your pace with the incluence of above mentioned equipment and skill.
Now theres just the boring need to grind at the same slow difficulty to get to the power level to clear the capstone dungeon.

    #3 The leveling progress.
Its just too damn slow, even if i run the recommended best dungeon for grinding with good performance. The quests are not event worth considering because of the laughable xp.
High Xp for Quests would have been a good incentive for me to do all the quests, but if you are questing now you are taking a hard step on the brakes with the leveling progress.

    #4 Region progress
If feels like a requirement to do this because of all the bonuses, but it feels like a drag to complete everything.

    #5 The story ending
It feels unfinished. If they had just slightly teasered any following story and had revealed it after a year i'd ne cool with it, but now it seems unsatisfying.

    #6 The visual theme
The game design is very good and atmospheric but there is no variety.
It wouldn't have hurt to have a few areas or enenies that are colorful, but now everything is bland.

    #7 enemy variety
it feels like there are less types of enemies than in the previous games, but maybe they are just all looking grey and i cant distinguish them.

To stop the rant, there are also positive things in game game. For me those are:
    - The visuals and audio have very high quality
    - The story representation is beautiful
    - Some very interesting beautifully staged boss fights
    - A great open world
    - Interesting quests
    - Technically good working mmo

There are surely many more good points to this game but as it is now i am just very frustrated with it.
Everything just feels so stretched to burn your time.

My personal conclusion is a maximum of 6/10, if not 5/10.

Pluses: - Graphics of course, atmo - Sound, voice output. Story does not pick up until A4

That's where you actually stop again unfortunately, Blizzard hasn't invented anything innovative here, the shell is shiny and pretty , but inside you find again the repeating bad quality blizzard has brought up through the last years.

    Negatives:

MMO aspect? Almost pointless whether I see another player or not, no global chat. Zero social interaction

Spot white empty landscapes when you want to go from point a to point b

Bosses, in principle, all the same, nobrain fights, Space Dodge here, Attack Attack, Dodge, run in circles

No build variety, you start with a skill at level 5 and will continue to use it at level 60 if switched at all

itemization same snot as with D3, +2 here, +1 str there, whether the items have stats or not is completely irrelevant , in the end you just look for the right aspects/leg effects and that's it unfortunately

Feeling of progression, I feel as strong at level 60 as I did at level 20. No power spikes, no aha moment

every build stackels vulnerability + main stat + critical hit + luck, always! no matter what class, you want more dmg? These are your stats. Grim Dawn, PoE, even Torch Light or Titan Quest change your skills over the course of the game, more projectile speed, more projectiles, other effects, cast on crit, cast on cast, cast on hit, look different graphics , etc. Depending on the class, you can use the same skills in other games, but they then have completely different effects. Paragon Board is also nothing more than Paragons in d3. You're just looking to get more of the same(major stat, crit, etc.)

Side quests are your standard MMO food, run there, collect 5 of this, bring back.

Endgame Loop is virtually without diversity, whether I grind Dungeons, Helltides, Tree of Whispers, the basic problem with the "hollow" basic concept of the game remains

If you don't necessarily need to jump on the bandwagon, or absolutely have to have the latest game or just "be part of the d4 release movement" you should buy the game for 20$ in a year

Unfortunately, I let myself be ragged on by the hype and marketing again

Im a casual gamer. I loved Diablo 1, the second edition wasnt appealing, the third lost me completely. However my brother told me, i think you would like the fourth edition as a casual gamer, so i tried it, and he was right, i really enjoy it.

Is it a hardcore RPG, no, is it a fun game killing time, doing mission, looting - yes.

The game is surprisingly fan on Steam Deck. But I cannot keep playing it because I don’t always have internet where I use my SD.

Because of the no checkpoint, no manuel save system a couple of times I had to play the last 15-30 minutes again which was disgusting.

The leveling of the enemies makes it pointless to play this game for long time. I gain level, enemies gain as much, in the end I’m at the point where I started the game.

The items found has the similar issue. The item I find become useless soon, so I don’t care anymore, I just make a few upgrades, use it for a few rounds and change it. I never found a good item at the sellers, it’s pointless to check them as well.

The Witcher 3 was one of the best balanced games I’ve ever played I guess. If you are at a certain level higher than the side quest that quest was becoming unplayable. You could find an item a few higher levels than yours and you needed to keep it until you reach that level. It was exciting to work on it. It's not kuantum physics, what gamers ask is clear, just use the logic.

The things Diablo 4 is good are; you can reset your skills for a reasonable amount. The difficulty is well balanced. Very few bugs. They worked on it this game for sure, not some sloppy job.

Easily deserves half the price they are asking for.

I loved D3 but all in all it was just too colorful and not really a true Diablo. Diablo 4 otherwise is a true masterpiece and everything we could have wished for. Bugs are mostly non existant and even if you find one its not gamebreaking. I'm truly amazed by how smooth the launch was and there were literally zero login queues.

Each level up turns into a problem because the player needs to think about how to catch up with the momentarily increased power of the monsters.

The monsters are always a few steps ahead and you're catching up. And it’s not easy to catch up, you need to regularly study the descriptions of everything, spend a lot of time studying skills and synergies in order to catch up with monsters that are always ahead in strength.
    This is absurd!

The game turns into build management to just not die from a rat, and this need is constant!

Auto level kills the most basic mechanics of the RPG genre, level up to move further. Here you lvl up to lvl up, it makes no sense.

The progression system is similar to the Diablo 3 system where you just do Greater Rifts to level up your gems and get paragon points. The game in its actual state does have a lot of potential because of its nice combatsystem and graphics. If blizzard would change the endgamesystem similar to poe and do innovative stuff like last epoch, this game and its community would love it. Also in its actual state there is a lot of air upwards.

    Bad game is bad.

    1. Level scaling is terrible. 2. No group finder? lol But you can run into random people that won’t help you. That’s even worse! If there were lobbies at least you could title them and join people to share a common goal!!! 3. Itemization is TERRIBLE… Have you seen a single person saying, “Want to Trade for Stone of Jordan???” LOL There’s NO allure to the gear. NONE.

    3. Itemization is TERRIBLE… Have you seen a single person saying, “Want to Trade for Stone of Jordan???” LOL There’s NO allure to the gear. NONE. It’s amazing!!!
    4. Interface is tingy and weird. Bad. Items have no weight they feel like “cards” not “gear.”
    5. They got rid of tetris in the inventory because… people are low IQ morons and that is too hard for them, so now we have a lesser system.
    6. Clicking 150 lilith statues and having to use a guide to find them because no mechanic in the game exists to find them otherwise is horrendous game design.
    7. Most bosses are bullet sponges. It’s tedious to kill them.
    8. Resist stats don’t even matter??? WTF They don’t even work? Ridiculous!
    9. The stats on gear aren’t exciting.
    10. You don’t get to feel stronger until you hit level 100?? LOL You have to grind for the privilege of feeling stronger. Instead of starting small and getting large, you have to get nowhere for 100 levels and THEN you can get gear that will make you feel strong. hahah
    11. Where is a system in this game that is even half as good as runewords were in D2… there isn’t one!
    12. The story is just some weird blah blah blah. Remember when we cared about saving Deckard Cain? That was pretty cool.
    13. I killed a world boss… what is this world of warcraft??? This isn’t an MMO!!
    14. I ride a horse, so I can skip fighting so I can get to places that I don’t want to get to, so I can finally get into a dungeon. This isn’t skyrim. It’s stupid to put horses in a dungeon crawler.
    15. Did they even take a single risk on anything that is halfway innovative or interesting?
    16. Metacritic is as 50%… okaaay that’s a failure.
    17. You know what is more important than being able to to play with friends at any level? Having a challenging world to fight against. I would trade that for anything right now.
    18. World tiers are just a lame way to makeup for the fact that scaling doesn’t work! So that entire system is by nature a contrived band aid to cover up an even worse problem.
    19. The flow of the game is all wrong… I don’t get the sense of ever deepening horror… they reveal too much too soon as far as evil etc goes. There’s no build up. It’s just PLOP now you’re in some evil dungeon that looks like hell but you aren’t in hell.
    20. Unlocking stuff so that your alt can level faster is just a worse way of "twinking" but without the fun of collecting a cool set like Saigon's from D2... its objectively worse than using set gear.

I could probably keep going but this is painful. What a tiring mess of a game.

-It feels like the endgame is making sure you dont reach the endgame (level 100) by making it a massive time sink to get there.
-Other endgame activities are dungeons and open world stuff which is essentially D3 style bounties/mini quests and Rifts.
    - There is no global/general chat. No group finder. This is basically a solo player game and it makes the "open" world feel empty and dead.
-lack of class balance - im playing necro and it seems to be one of the weaker classes especially with pets doing little damage.
-There is a lack of stuff to kill. They just nerfed dungeon mob density which is pretty dumb. They should actually do the opposite and buff density so dungeons are packed full of mobs. I want endless armies of hundreds of mobs and elites in every dungeon or open world area to kill.
-Cash shop - uh wtf. I already paid for the game. Why is there micro transactions for this game ?
-Mount gets stopped constantly and feels clunky. Why are there random roadblocks around the map? Its just annoying.
-No saved gear and talent profiles so you have to redo everytime you switch builds. Why does it cost gold to change talents?

I'm forgetting a lot of other stuff.
But overall, the game feels boring and just not fun. It feels like doing endless quests in the open world or empty dungeons.

My biggest issues with the game have been the server stability (disconnects and lagging) and the "run halfway across the world" for the next objective. POE feels like a continuous story, where as Diablo 4 feels like a fetch quest fever dream.
Also, do you love being able to over level to breeze through content? Well, get rekt nerd, because Diablo 4 scales the area/campaign to your level so if you are having a rough time on World 1 difficulty... Better just uninstall

    Side Missions 2/10
They are dull open world filler and not captivating. If you're concerned about that sort of thing, finishing some of the missions out of order doesn't really make sense because they presume you've completed the campaign. The reward is insignificant (crafting supplies, experience points, gold) or occasionally a pointless rare item that you can't even equip on your class.

    Events 2/10
The open world, dungeons, and cellars all contain events, which are brief scripted interactions. They give out Obals, the standard gambling currency. They quickly grow stale because there is a very limited selection of events copy/pasted across a very large world.

    Cellars 0/10
Cellars are useless open world filler. For the price of 2 loading screens you get to experience a small 1 room dungeon that contains an "Event" that you've already done many times over.

    Dungeons 5/10
Horribly formulaic. Once you have done 1 dungeon you have done all 100+ copy/paste dungeons.
Do objective X then, if there is a boss, kill it.
Layouts are all the same, mostly medium length corridors running NE or SE.

    Nightmare Dungeons 1/10
The games normal dungeons can be run as a "nightmare" version which will have 1 good and 2 bad affixes. The dungeon rewards XP for glyphs on your paragon board.
Compared to maps in games (PoE, Torchlight2, Last Epoch) this is just lazy and boring.
Once you max your glyphs there isn't even a reason to run them.

    Tree of Whispers 2/10
This is like a continuous daily quest mechanic.
You complete the same open world "activities" (Dungeons, Cellars, Events) you have been doing but you gain a currency that can be exchanged for a loot bag.

    Strong Holds (7/10)
    A single-use open world event.
These events are done solo or in a group.
The event are fairly original to the location and have unique story/lore content.
Completing this event replaces the event with a NPC town/camp often with a waypoint.

    Legion Events 5/10
These are open world events that appear every so many hours.
It is basically a mass-murder-fest with 3 loot chest at the end.
There are no mechanics, just a zerg of people face-rolling mobs.

    World Bosses 8/10
These are open world events that appear every so many hours.
There appear to be 3 world bosses, they have mechanics, drop loot like any boss and a weekly cache of loot as well.
The fights are pretty fun but as players learn the mechanics and grow in power the bosses can be killed VERY quickly.
The bosses do not seem to scale at all to the power level of the players.
Seems they are just loot pinatas.

    Helltide 2/10
An entire open world zone can become a helltide for 1 hour which allows the monsters to drop a helltide currency used to open helltide chests which contain a mandatory crafting currency.
When compared to GuildWars2 zone wide events these are very lame.

    Renown 4/10
Each of the games 5 regions has a sequence of 5 account wide rewards unlocked by progressing the amount of renown you have in that region
The rewards are mandatory for character progression, so completing everything feels mandatory
This the only reason complete all the filler content in the game.

Music 2/10 Nothing memorable like D1 or D2 Very soft and forgettable, like ambient background music Mounts 1/10 Got 5 mounts, all are the same retextured horse *Driving* the horse feels awful with mouse/keyboard The horse often gets caught on things and just stops Itemization 5/10 Boring/Underpowered Conditional affixes are stupid Tedious item comparison Gems 3/10 Boring/Underpowered Enchanting 3/10 Same boring replace 1 affixes system form D3 but more expensive Combat 7/10 Combat is fairly slow Character is always resource starved and feels underpowered as the world scales up each time you level Graphics 8/10 The game world has a lot of detail and looks good when zoomed out. Zoom in and it looks like a mobile game Campaign 5/10 There are no twists-and-turns in the main story, it is very stale and bland No interesting characters Cut Scenes 10/10 The pre-rendered cut scenes were all very well done Conclusion For existing players of Diablo games, the main problem with Diablo 4 is that it is boring, it feels like a repackaged Diablo 3 with a different story and tweaked/repackaged end game systems. Once you finish the campaign and get to world tier 4 there isn't any reason to continue playing.

Also the controls are very clunky. In D2, it was always possible to escape mobs because the screen was zoomed out quite a lot, in D4, there is no way, wherever you click, you will target a mob and so your character won't move but shoot. You can bind a key to Force Move but this should be done by default.

Items and damage make no sense, there are just so many magical items, and yet they all sucks. The quests and mobs also increase in difficulty while you level up so there is never an easy quest to finish.

Being limited to 4 health potions is another non-sense. I can have 20 boots, armors, helmets, in my bag, but no health potions? Obviously, this is not a role-playing game, it's an action game. Most of the time, when I die, it's because I didn't have enough potions, this forces you to go back and forth between the nearest town and the quest. So boring. In D2 or other games you have to prepare before you go on a quest, here you just go and TP back, and go again. Also, town portals are free and unlimited, but health potions limited to 4? Ridiculous.

Anyways, I am happy I didn't buy the season pass. There are much better ARPGs around.

    tl;dr:
No. Either believe me or read my reasoning.

    - None of the central features of the game are really used to improve gameplay. Any feature or mechanic that is introduced feels like a letdown and mounts up to frustration.
    - The game is built around the idea to feel like an MMO. Yet, there is hardly any social interaction and social interaction is not encouraged. There is no content for groups that requires any engagement whatsoever. You can run into certain events (World Bosses, Legions) and meet people. Yet the difficulty scales to the point where you don't need to engage the other players to work together. They are just there. Where the casual MMO rewards group play and social interaction by providing challenging but rewarding content. Diablo 4 doesn't.
    - Group play is rewarding and fine, but that doesn't require the MMO elements of the game. That worked fine in Diablo 1.
    - This comes at a cost, the optimization of the netcode (of a company that created one of the longest running MMOs in the market) is subpar. Stuttering, loading areas that lead to lag (still there is rubberbanding). The game doesn't play nice when the server is obviously under stress (confirmed that with friends in different regions). All that given that the know-how should be available, the ressources to do it should be there, I see no fix any time soon.
    - PvP Zones are empty and a win or loose all situation, when you encounter someone else. Still it does not matter since zones remain mostly empty. Farming the items on a lower world tier is just a grind.
    - While the tone is consistent, it doesn't lead anywhere. The storytelling, without going into spoilers, feels rushed from a storyteller perspective. Loose ends are adressed in the worst way possible to quickly be done with side characters and plot points in the end. If feels painful to watch certain character decisions. Even when information is blatantly available, characters act like Dora trying to find her backpack.
    - Of the ARPGs I played (Diablo 1-4, Grim Dawn, Titan Quest) this is the game with the worst "power fantasy". Certain skills are only viable with certain especially rare items, some skills simply aren't good. In the sense that it feels tedious to use them, not from an optimized harcore game point of view. While I understand that balancing requires that player power feels earned and varied. Never feeling powerful with certain skills is not the point of playing a game.
    - Item-Management feels tedious and unrewarding, finding good loot requires slogging through loads of other items useless items. So much so that the joy of finding something good is completely void. The UI here provides no support what so ever. Searching specific stats on items is something games provided years ago. Grim Dawn allows you to determine the stats and rarities you care about to be sorted before you even actually see the item dropping.
    - Not even the riding feature feels fun or rewarding. The horse is available late in the game and feels not properly tested. Getting dismounted from combat (which can happen just by lag) leads to a 30 second cooldown on the horse. The horse also gets stuck a lot on collision, overall riding doesn't always feel like a good choice even when clearly the player is supposed to ride.
    - The game is supposed to launch with a stable endgame with live service in mind, it feels with the artifical difficulty implemented in leveling (overall too much emphasis on the leveling phase, collectible grind on new characters) like the developers are afraid of people reaching endgame. No wonder, the first level 100 hardcore barbarian died to lag.

The average Metascore of 87 at the moment is brought down in my eyes by: new features that lead nowhere, an UI and gameplay loop that feels tedious, unrewarding (and frankly out of touch compared to releases years ago), with technical difficulties I personally see no hope in them being solved, a story that is luckwarm and lackluster (this is not an excuse for any genre, people told good stories with phantomines before. Figure it out, the services of a good writer are cheaper than a yacht for your executive.) that puts the game down to 3 out 10 for me.

Game lacks diversity in environments and enemies. The new skill system isn't elaborated enough to enjoy mixing skills for testing new effects. The legendary affixes on items aren't interesting and aren't so much game changers. Everything feels toned down, stripped of its flesh and spat in your face for a price way too high.

Blizzard has been lazy and it shows. IT IS LITERALLY A TWEAKED MOBILE GAME. They copied Immortals and charge your full price for it. What a shame.

    Art + Story: 9/10

They did a good job capturing the aesthetic of Diablo. Definitely the best in the series as far as art goes

    Itemization: 2/10

Items are bind on account. The required level of items is set at drop time to your character level. They can roll up to 4 affixes. Affixes are almost all some iteration of % more dmg or % more defense, with a couple exceptions. Aspects are the only really interesting part of itemization, they modify skills in interesting ways. The downside of aspects is that after normal mode they become essential for builds to work. So if you don't get the aspects, you don't get to play the build. Unique items barely exist in the game. They are bind on account, have a req lvl of your character, and are class + build specific. The likelihood of you finding a unique that works for your build is very low.

items in D4 never give that dopamine hit that finding a GG unique in PoE and D2 does. If great itemization is an important aspect of an ARPG to you, you will probably be unhappy with this game.

    Combat + Gameplay : 6/10

I think main problem that gameplay has in D4 is the inconsistency over the leveling process. Depending on class, it may start strong, but will settle into a grindy auto-attack -> auto-attack -> auto-attack -> core skill pattern. Eventually if you are lucky with item and aspect drops you may be rewarded with auto-attacking less. The gameplay experience when your build is humming is like 8/10, but most of the game you are auto-attacking and waiting on cooldowns which is not fun 4/10.

    Open World / Social : 3/10

No way to find people to party with. No way to communicate beyond emotes. No way to trade. Occasionally you see people when doing an event like helltides or world boss. But having those people around really does not add anything. They have to have had much more ambitious plans for the open world.... because there is essentially nothing here. The only halfway decent aspect of open world is the pvp zones.

The poor open world and social aspects are very weird because core elements of the game seem to be designed around it. Take monster auto-scaling in most zones. Presumably this exists to smooth the multiplayer and open world experience. But it has trade offs that negatively impact the gameplay, leveling, and itemization experience. These three other systems are negatively impacted in order to facilitate the open world experience, but the open world experience itself is basically nothing. The few players you see in your play are as impactful as random NPCs.

    Overall: 6.0

    Should you buy it?

D4 is best enjoyed on console, bring your own friend, couch coop style. If that is how you are planning to play, it is probably worth purchasing. If you are a more dedicated ARPG fan playing on the PC, maybe give it more time to mature. However if you love Diablo 3, you will probably love this game. If you prefer Diablo 2 or Path of Exile style ARPG, your experience may be more like mine.

Most of my friends were skipping all cut scenes and dialogues.

Gameplay: I think skill tree is good but too small. I don't mind skills like +3% to damaging frozen enemies or something. Still better than +20000% to two specific skills set bonuses in D3.
But the game is quite slow. Long cooldowns and small mana pool. If the game was at least challenging you could consider those as tactical elements but currently its just slow. Creatures are boooring and well known. Bosses? While thinging Andariel I thought I am playing linage or something and fighting opoonents toes. No content after story. Nothing to do. Quite grindy.

I'm giving them a zero for the way they did the nerfs and the broken-incomplete game they sold. It's like they built an entire amusement park, but people are only using the seesaws. Now, the developers have to step in and temporarily take the seesaws out of service to encourage players to explore the rest of the park the way they intended.

I must acknowledge the marketing team at Bliz for successfully hyping the game and driving sales. If it were any other game with a different name and a less devoted fan base, I don't think it would have fared as well. As it stands, the game feels more like a beta version rather than a fully polished product.

Diablo IV is really good from 1-50, or when you finish the story mode. However, the game becomes a slugfest after level 60. Diablo IV is plagued by a bad UI, terrible item management, and the dramatic increase it takes to level. Not to forget that the "MMO" aspect of the game is dead, it is just a ploy to make you purchase in-game store items.

I played Lost Ark some and the money grab of that game made it truly unplayable. That was so bad, I quit playing all games for a little while.

The BAD: Going to get this out of the way first. The biggest detractors are easily the quality of life issues. No doubt, a separate gem bag should have been obvious from the moment they started coding the game. I also like map overlays from other games, including D2. The ability to search for items by stats should also be a thing. All of these things have probably been pointed out and should be easy fixes for Blizzard to implement. These should have been obvious for this genre, but really, the game has only been out a little over a week. Name the last game that didn't have any misses on day 1...

The GOOD: The game is fun. It plays well. The graphics are great and the main quest is fully voice acted with fantastic cutscenes. All things I would expect from the Blizzard games I grew up playing. (I know Blizzard has had a number of L's in recent years, so I was worried.) The endgame being nonexistent is maybe a hardcore player's issue. I am enjoying the open world aspects of the game, thought I kind of wish they would spawn world bosses and legion events a bit quicker so there was always one to go to (i.e. Guild Wars 2).

The BEST: This game is NOT P2W... The in-game shop is garbage and that is a great thing. It is not even remotely tempting to pay money for any of the skins. With mobs exploding up all around me, I can't even see my character a lot of the time and couldn't possibly care less about it. Disclaimer: My last truly hardcore ARPG playing days were D2 where all the characters literally looked the same and I didn't care then either. So, the best part of the game is that, for the first time in ages, I feel like I have bought a game and don't need to open up my wallet again.

So, if you want to play a fun game without worrying about getting your wallet out every other day, this is a great game and I would absolutely recommend it. I am sure they will fix the quality of life issues and everything else has been honestly fun.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a casual gamer, I've been playing for a week after work and on the weekend. I have enjoyed the game somewhat and still am, however playing D2 for a while when I was younger I don't think I will be playing D4 for that long. The bugs, crashes, and hotfix updates make me feel like the game is not complete. There are quite a few aspects to the game that don't make any sense.

The following issues for me are:

No item filter, a massive issue for someone who likes to play multiple classes, aspects look the same, and having to go from tab to tab to spot the text I need is like an Excel spreadsheet task.

4 Storage tabs that get filled with aspects and gear very quickly, If I was to continue playing on my other characters I wouldn't have enough space for gearing so it forces you to focus on only playing 1 class.
A mount that can run over fountains and **** in town but gets stuck on pebbles in the map, is incredibly annoying.
Constant changes to skills post-launch - let the game land make the changes you need to for season 1. I like to plan ahead and with the bugs, unintended items and crashes just make me feel that the game wasn't ready.
No global chat, no community the only dialogue you will have with another player is if you both happen to reach a dungeon entrance at the same time and they want to play with someone. There being no LFG tool in a MMORPG is dumb why even make the game a MMORPG? If you have friends playing with you I'm sure you won't experience this.

I enjoyed the campaign, the ending was a bit flat and I was made to kill a villain that made actually a lot of sense throughout the story. They demonize (haha) her via her methods with the excuse being the strongest will survive and the weak need to be culled. I just felt the main villain was just extreme but her heart was in the right place. I didn't feel like she was someone that needed to be killed even some key characters in the campaign didn't feel the need to stop the main villain. The previous games have all been about demons trying to take over, control, and lust for power, this was a different type of villain but the response was the same as before. For me, this is why the campaign falls flat.

I haven't hit level 100 yet so will keep playing till I do so, but I feel the endgame is just chasing gear via various means and this being a MMORPG that being the only endgame is poor.

World Bosses require no co-ordination and occur on a set timer, it would be great to have them triggered by players achieving a goal together.

It's a nice-looking game, that's easy to get into with some depth but its not a masterclass or 10/10

I said to my gf you start to feel like this game is just a time management exercise world bosses are on a timer, tree of whisper = timer, nightmare maps = timer.

I guess I am just disappointed why couldn't they of made the entirety of Sanctuary a battlefield with each map having objectives and goals to push back the tide of hell. That sets up a massive battle with other players to the gates of hell. Its an MMORPG built with a linear mindset.

Uninspired, boring af, no real substance. Combat is meaningless. "Exploring" the world is an illusion. Probably the worst video game I've ever played for more than a few days.

I really liked that it was easy to get into the game and now I can finally play a arpg without having to 100% follow a guide like I have to do it Poe (I have like 400 hours in that game, which isnt a lot but enough for me). But I also think this game will fall or rise depending on how they do the first season of diablo 4.
But I still wish there is more to do at a certain point which isnt hellfire souls farm or nightmare dungeons or let's say.. things to look forward to like diablos uber boss.
I'm looking forward to the future of this game. I think it is a great experience for casual players entering diablo for the first time but it still needs a lot of work to stay competetive on the market mainly to attract more players than just the casual player, or me who is inexperienced in this genre.

The one thing where I put this game to a 7 instead of a 6 or 5 was the last act. I felt like I was in a cinema watching myself slay and conquer demons. Felt amazing. That cinematic level was just over the top amazing. Although, without saying too much. The epilogue was weird to me but hey. Let's see what the future holds.

Which dumbass at Blizzard made this decision? Robbing the players of their reward in a grinding game??????

One other problem is that when you play Tier 4 the money you need to experiment with builds and to modify items is insanely high.

The density of monsters in the open world is so low that most of the time i leave them right behind, even in Helltide...

Good until you reach the endgame, which is nonexistent.

Instead we will have the endgame trickle in every 3 months. I will rereview the actual game when it is complete in a few years, but right now its pretty trash.

What made matters worse was that this game had a different fun factor than the previous one. It lacked the unique storyline and compelling characters that made the last game enjoyable. I wondered why I even bothered to spend money on this new release.

In the future, Blizzard should care more about creating genuinely engaging games for its players. As for me, I will be looking elsewhere for my gaming entertainment.

Poor game without any innovation. Me, as a fun of Diablo series and RPG/D&D/Hack&Slash genres, as game developer and games designer, I'm totally disappointed.

I've seen much deeper MODs of Diablo 2, this game is just a shame for Blizzard and Activision, hope they won't last for long and let their talents will join other teams that may be able to use them for good.

The art is competent and gives off the impression of talent, but remains one note and level in quality the whole way through. It never exceeds expectations or wows, but at least never looks bad.
The gameplay is functional but shallow, and never dares to let the player exceed carefully crafted boxes, which personally, when it comes to the ARPG genre, may as well be the prime sin an ARPG can commit. Player expression through gameplay is effectively non-existent beyond the $25 armor sets the store offers.
The most seething criticism I can offer falls upon the story, though. It often gestures to creative and interesting ideas, but they are never more than gestures and the true events mostly fall flat and fail to deliver, thanks to the utter predictability of it all. Though I was limited to the most boring act in the game during the beta periods, I called the ultimate result of the story from the moment I met Neyrelle. Some details I couldn't possibly predict, of course, but the broad strokes of the...twists...this game offers were there. The typical "genius" conceptual twists that hang so low on the tree of writing that the short arms of the typical LA writer are capable of reaching them. I was deeply unsatisfied with the sheer amount of time I was forced to play the campaign, for what ultimately felt like nothing more than the opening act of a story I wasn't told, thanks to the need for every game these days to be a lengthy, unfinished, live-service game. The campaign was overly stretched, filling some need to have every major segment of the map feature some story element, causing the already barebones story content to feel even worse. Three of the six acts effectively result in a "Welp, they aren't here!" moment, making them feel insanely repetitive until the latter half of the game. The conclusion left me waving my hands in bewildered gestures towards my screen, disbelieving that, that was 'it." That was the whole game.

Diablo IV is boring. Simple as that. Everything is carefully crafted to waste as much time as it possibly can, as the game has no other way of keeping you engaged. The story must last upwards of 20 hours, even though it hardly deserves the time. The endgame must have world tiers that change nothing beyond new arbitrary items types which are questionably "better"(?) than the previous item tier. Paragon power must be locked behind an arduous grind of repetitive, boring side content. Objectives must be as distantly spread apart as possible. Diablo IV is not only boring, but it is a waste of time, just barely disguised enough to seem like a game.

The dev's don't like you, and they don't like fun
I have finished the campaign, and have checked out several of the characters
The game's graphics are relatively good. Props to the artists paid by Blizzard
That is the only positive thing
Diablo is traditionally a hack and slash game, however, 75% of the time there is very little to hack or slash. Very low mob density, and sometimes you can go for minutes just running through barren landscapes and huge empty corridors not killing anything, because there's not even anything there.
Not sure if this is on purpose to drag out the playtime, but it is the most mind numbing gaming experience I have had this year
They allow you to have a horse in the 4th act, that's two thirds into the game already, it takes this long for seemingly no reason, the guy that gives it to you is in the very first city. It's just that in the 4th act, you meet someone who is mates with the stable guy, so he's like "yeah, grab a horse, why not".
So on-top of the slog that is exploring the world the combat is a massive slog too, the way enemies level to your level, means that relative damage wise a level 6 character will be significantly more powerful than a level 45 character when it comes to fighting enemies in the starting area. For example, as a level 6 druid you will with no gear be able to use an ability to 1 hit an entire pack, almost regardless of what's in it. To do this to the exact same pack (that have now level'd to match your exact level) at level 45 you would need specific gear, upgrades and synergies.
This means until you find a way to become OP, every time you level up, your hero's power becomes more lame. It feels bad.
Ironically the game's story is quite diabolical. Once you get to hell in the game, you feel like you might actually be going through hell in real life as well
It seems like maybe the amount of combat was so pathetic because they tried to make it a role playing game, but unfortunately that fell flat, into a fire probably.
Flaming garbage, for the most part, you're wondering why the hell the characters are making these decisions, why does it seem like we're about to be offered a meaningful choice but not really, why are we on an ayahuasca trip in a swamp(twice), why does it seem like we are a side character, is this written by chat GPT, is this actually a scooby-doo RPG, and why do we fight some dude called Elias 5 times?
So until you get to the end-game, it's barely hack and slash, and it's a horrendous excuse for an RPG.
My most charitable take on why it’s so slow, is that they wanted you to take the time to stare at the good graphics. This was a bad idea, made worse by the mind numbing repetition of assets layouts and “dungeon” biomes in general. The game “boasts more than a 100 dungeons” really, there are like 5, and then copy paste that, nice job.
I played the whole story co-op as well, which is a feature I feel they didn't test properly. Very often, when my co-op buddy spoke to an NPC for a quest, that NPC would go invisible for me...great...so I miss out on that. I missed out on two of the games biggest cut-scenes. On-top of this, even when NPC's don't go invisible, if I interact with the NPC first, and go through the quest conversation, if mine ends before it does for my buddy, the conversation then sometimes ends for him as well even though he hasn't finished reading (same vice versa).
    Well done.
You can't right click and teleport directly to a player in your party like you could in Diablo 3. You can however teleport to town, and then teleport to the player from a portal that is always there, this is free except it costs your IRL time.
    Thanks.
Stability was ok for the most part, except it kicked me out three times when I tried to watch the main battle cut-scene towards the end, and then blocked me from logging in for a couple of minutes because I had tried to log in too many consecutive times.
Makes sense, kick me out, and then block me for trying to get back in.
    Cheers.
The people that came up with the shop system in this game need to have a word with themselves.
The gear they sell is for the most part entirely useless, and yet somehow they still put a 5000% price mark-up on items (yes, literally, not exaggerating). They will sell a normal (white item) for 3x more than they will buy a unique, let alone legendary. What is the point?
Worse than this, if you think you can go around the dozens of shops throughout this pointless open world looking for an item with a specific roll, think again. For some astounding reason every single armor vendor across the continent sells the exact same like 5 items.
    Makes sense right?
Thinking of re-rolling gear? Good on you well, let me tell ya unless you've been selling loads of stuff as opposed to breaking it down
30k for the first time I re-rolled something not bad
    Second re-roll 120k!
2 more re-rolls or so and it's more than 300K to try again.
    Save your money IRL.

I knew this game would be bad just from the footage from the beta but I decided to buy it just to give it a chance with friends. I have thousands of hours playing diablo 2 and have been a fan of the franchise since my early childhood. I had more fun playing Chronicon for $12 off steam then my $90 copy of diablo 4, and Chronicon doesn't even have multiplayer which is a huge downfall.I knew this game would be bad just from the footage from the beta but I decided to buy it just to give it a chance with friends. When you play ARPG's you expect to be fighting through hordes of monsters with a badass character and the game to feel good. What you get out of diablo 4 is an empty desert devoid of life while you kill 3 skeletons because they are afraid of packsize.

This game is absolutely horrible, the systems are overly complex to try to pretend it has depth like POE. When it is just complex to be complex. Example: 30% fire resistance, reduces fire damage by 14.8%. Not to mention that all damage snapshots, so if you get a damage over time on you like poison and you press your 1 defensive cooldown with 50% reduced damage taken. It doesn't do anything to reduce the damage at all, the damage is snapshotted before you had the damage reduction.

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.
