I can appreciate there are people reviewing this game with little to no comparison of other ARPGs or other games from the Diablo franchise. At face value, this can be a fun story to play through.

Sadly, for all the fans who've been waiting years for this release and have witnessed the changes that were implemented into D3 to get it to where it is now, D4 is an absolute disappointment.

There are far too many negatives to point out, so I will just say what I like about the game and let you ponder on what that leaves out.

    - The art design is lovely (Wouldn't go so far as to say the map design is nice, maybe adequate)
    - Having a mount is nice (Too bad you're likely going to be running the game at 10 fps)
    -The Butcher

Virtually every other meaningful area of the game is lacking/sub par/improperly tested/purposely restrictive.

£69.99 price tag, by the way.

After patch 1.1 Blizzard suck all remaining fun out of the game. We asked for the end game, they decided to end the game. Decimated two classes, no improvements only nerfs.

    Drawbacks are:
-Story is boring as hell, but honestly I didn't expect something else.
-Balancing. The disparity between different Skills and builds is huge. Which makes variety (@higher difficulties) very limited...
-Server. I don't know who had this Idea. The Servers are terrible. Sometimes you need a lot of Time just to log into the game, at prime times the game can be laggy as hell. It's 2023 ffs.
-Missing Quality of Life features. Again it's 2023 and you have a small inventory, no extra bag for gems etc etc...
-Microtransactions... still hate them in full price games
-Artificial extend the playtime. For example, finding all Lilith Statues. Does anybody think that it is fun to run around the world and click statues? Or doing all the Side Quest to get renown? Who ever develop this game, never played a ARPG itself.

If I could go back in time, I would not buy it again. It's not exactly bad, just feel non point.

Season 1 patch did not fix any of these major problems, but they nerfed xp gain, alt boosting, general attack and defensive power and nerfed already weak classes and did not fix some overpowered classes.

This is absolutely worst game development I have ever experienced on a game ever. As of now do not invest time or money into this until there is massive changes in how liveservice development is happening and core issues are fixed.

And maybe even so, is it good game? Debatable

Although diablo 4 is potential to be a great game, Blizzard obviously don't know how to manage their game. There are tons of ui design can be fixed easily to make the game fluently, but Blizzard decide to ignore those important ui design but focus on diminishing players interest. well done!

Cant' wait to see how they will bribe cc with "drops" to inflate hype in s1.

Character creation: You are not allowed to create good looking characters. All the options are despicable and limited. Can't alter look when your character's been made which is.. you can change tattoo but you cannot change hairstyle? That's great I guess.

Music: Whatever, hardly ever paid any attention to it. The only one that stuck in my head is the theme for the main hub of fractured peaks.

Skills: BOOORING. It's D3 skill table without runes. You have slightly more freedom during leveling, but as soon as you hit max points, it starts to show how unintuitive and useless it is.

Paragon board: you have nods, common, magic, rare, legendary and sockets for glyphs.
Forget legendary nods. They are pretty useless. Focus on common nods giving you stats like in diablo 3. Pick all the matching stats for the glyph around it for maximum benefit. That is so exciting right? Especially when you realize how expensive and painful it is to refund each point 1 by 1.

Items: Itemization is a joke, bloated with useless affixes, useless uniques, legendaries are just rares with an extra affixes. Rerolling items is a major pain in the a**. Multi-tier system. Sacred-Ancestor. It's worthless, it's a bad joke, it's bad design. When you play at lvl100, and sacred items start raining for you. Free gold I guess, same as when uniques drop. Few 100k gold or don't even pick it up, because apparently ancestor rare items have better potentials and values.

    UI: Console Trash.

There's so much to talk about, but I just don't care. This game doesn't deserve more effort from me. It managed to make some cash so good for blizzard. S1 will be a blast, low latency due to the absence of the majority of people who read the v1.1 patch log.

I hope my review will deter some customers from making the same mistake I made, wasting money on a product that isn't even loved by the same people who are developing it.

The suits above, or whoever is in charge of making the game focused on "player engagement/playtime" has ruined the game. Slows its pacing down so you spend more time grinding away at the same content you've already experienced over and over.

They want you to spend more time leveling, playing through the story, dying over and over again to simple monsters, because forget survivability in a ARPG game, you want glass cannon! So maybe, just maybe, you'll look at the cosmetics shop and buy something because you're that bored, so its worth it for them in the end.

They don't respect your time as a gamer, you shouldn't have to respect their game.

Patch 1.1 has utterly ruined the game. They've decimated every single class, slashing their damage and defense. Instead of introducing new avenues to amplify power, they've simply made the sole viable method even weaker. Rest in peace, Diablo 4. Rumor has it that Path of Exile is flourishing, offering a far superior experience.

But then along comes patch 1.1, which basically nerfs all enjoyment to the game and does the OPPOSITE of fun or what the community wants or needs.

Nerfing XP into the ground, along with the cooldown reduction, damage output and tankiness. So they've basically turned the game into an even bigger, slower grind where people sit there waiting for cooldowns and grind out the same lack of content over and over.

Instead of making builds and stats more viable, they just nerf the good ones so every build is useless.
Instead of making the game more enjoyable, improving quality of life, or making builds more fun, they just nerf everyone.
Instead of making unique items actually usable, they just add more useless uniques.
Instead of adding more content, they just increase the grind (helltides AND nightmare dungeons).
Instead of improving the weakest class in the game (Sorcerers i'm looking at you), they outright nerfed them as well.

    etc etc.

And all this whilst we still have no easy way to try out of change builds, or even reset our skill tree's or paragon trees. Still nowhere to store all all our gems, aspects, or items. And uniques (apparently the best items in the game), are still useless.

    Diablo 4: the boring grind.

Season 1 patch notes show a lack of respect for the players' time and compell me to review the game when I would have left it be before. Campaign is fun but the characters are forgettable, gameplay feels fluid but post campaign the game becomes tedious and Season 1's only going to add to the tedium.

A friend of mine bought me the game a few days after it came out when he saw that I was the only person on his friends list that was not playing it. I was not playing D4 because the parent company Activision-Blizzard killed one of my biggest gaming hypes, Overwatch 2's PvE story mode. "Acti-Blizz" had become an actual husk of what the company used to be and I didn't want to support them any more but it was a gift, it felt rude to refuse the game so I broke my principles and played the game.

The story is neat and the art style of the whole game is very "dark" (a drastic change from the rather "cartoony" looking Diablo 3) though after the first act there is an absolute bombardment of characters to keep up with for their respective Act story lines, making it hard to form a connection with any of them (except Donan, his story is pretty memorable). I played a Twisting Blades rogue after hearing all over the Internet that the class played like the rogue lite game Hades and it did; the movement was so fluid and dashing around damaging enemies and waiting for the returning blades felt so fun and reactive, had a lot of fun. Then I beat the story and ran dungeons until beating the Tier 3 Capstone Dungeon to upgrade the difficulty of the world, then ran dungeons until I could beat the Tier 4 Capstone Dungeon. While there seems to be a lot to do in the overworld, it and the dungeons (which are presented as all unique but most are just tilesets) started to feel very same-y over time and I hit "the wall" at level 72. Hoping for major changes to add content and buff other playstyles and builds, I put the game on the digital shelf to play some other games.

I had no intentions of leaving a review for this game anywhere; I got my money's worth from the game for the "preseason" and felt contented with the product I received. Having read the Season 1 patch notes, I now feel greatly compelled to leave this review. While I cannot post the notes in detail here, the general gist of the Diablo 4 Season 1 patch notes was "Players are beating the game too fast, we need to slow them all down." Instead of buffing weaker builds and classes (looking at Sorceress), they decided to nerf skills and stats across the entire board with some very small class-specific buffs that are completely outclassed by the game-changing nerfs to stats like Vulnerable that help do more damage to enemies. They make Helltide chests, loot chests that have higher chances at the best gear but you have to farm the temporary currency to open them in a specific zone that is populated with other players, even more expensive so that players are required to engage in the helltide events for longer, to increase the chance of them seeing other players possibly with all their Macrotransaction cosmetics and getting caught in the Fear of Missing Out on the cosmetic gear that should just be earnable. But if there's money to be made on cosmetics, Activision-Blizzard has it on lock.

While there are some positives in the patch notes (over 6600 characters long, a statistic the Diablo 4 developers are VERY proud off), over 10% of those 6600 characters pertained to something along the lines of "Fixed issue with..." With so many changes that reduce the power of the player/character. it is very bold to be proud of these notes. Obviously this isn't going to kill Diablo 4, Activistion-Blizzard cast such a wide net with this game (and caught so many fish, holy **** they sold so many copies) there are many players who aren't even going to know what "patch notes" are. But I bet a few of them are going to notice when it takes even longer than it currently does to get to where they are now, because of course, with a seasonal system comes making a new character every 3 months if you want to engage in the new content.

I wished for better but this is what we get; I've already uninstalled the game with a number of friends just straight up not going to play this season (for those who purchased the $100 edition I believe you can "save" the battlepass they gave you and use it on a future season). I hope those who do enjoy the game continue to do so, and I look forward to playing the fixed and complete version of the game sometime around Season 28 in the year 2030.

Item affixes are just sad for a modern ARPG, and trying to get that one aspect that you really need is worse than grinding currency in Korean MMOs. Unique items - IN A DIABLO GAME - are non-existent. Your mount will stop moving when you barely touch any corner or move your mouse over the UI. World bosses are a sad excuse for a boss since they die in seconds and provide absolutely no excitement... or loot. Not much. Everyone responsible for everything other than gameplay aspects did their job well. Cutscenes are great, audio is solid, graphics are nothing special but framerates are very stable.

EDIT: They just announced the next big patch. It just nerfs everything to the ground without addressing any real issues the game has.

Edit : I have to reduce my score. Blizzard didn't listen to actual players feedback or didn't really test their game past the main story. It's almost obvious that they're not playing anything past the earlier difficulties, or they wouldn't have shipped the current patch the way it is. A lot of glaring issues are still present more than a month after the release, and instead of changing and balancing skills and classes in a way that would make their players want to stay, a lot of characters now feel weaker, in a game where a lot of skills already were subpar to begin with.

They're doing a very poor job of keeping people interested in the game, and that's bad. I'll give them one more chance.

The brand “Blizzard” was an amazing asset in 1998.

I mean, it was worth hundreds of millions, billions.

Today I would say Blizzard brand is a liability.

Add the tag “Blizzard” to a video game and it will instantly emanate a pestilential aura of half baked brainless game with the potential to disappoint even more one game after another.

How have we come this low ?

How are we still surprised that we’ve come this low ?

Blizzard top management & shareholders, your decision-making IS ruining your games.

Perhaps you think “we have to generate the revenue in the short run”, but you know very well that the only way to ensure a steady stream of revenue is building your brand equity.
You are destroying your company in the long run. I mean, you’ve been destroying it for a while now.

I was one of your biggest supporters. And I've been for 25 years.

Today I decide to finally let you go.

It feels like a break-up, I have hard time letting you go but I have to let you go.

I purchased this game on 7/16.....horribly long d/l time for my 1 GB internet....maxed at 8 MB/s, avg. 6. ok fine, maybe BNET is just busy. Game looks nice, graphics aren't particularly great outside of cut-scenes and even then, SC2 and D3 looked pretty much the same. Maybe my RTX 2080, i9 and 32 GB just doesn't cut it anymore. Storyline seems vaguely interesting, but in a few hours of play on 7/16 and 7/17, i was disconnected from server at the end of 3 separate dungeons. Blizzard refuses to help or fix the issue. It seemed this was ongoing from the number of complaints. As many others are experiencing, all Blizzard will do is point you to a forum with unsuccessful fixes and tell you that your ISP is the issue (i've got guaranteed 99% uptime and i experience relatively zero network issues during my gaming sessions, so understandably my ISP took offense to this accusation).

With this in mind, I requested a refund as I had played the game less than maybe 8 hours and about 40% of that was forfeit/wasted due to disconnect, can't say for sure how long because after doing some digging, I learned that Blizzard actively hides this stat so that they can tell you that you've played for too long. I had not yet gotten to level 15 of my character. How far could I honestly get that warrants keeping my $75? Purchased 7/16, requested refund 7/17. Denied. Pretty sure there's a non-revocable 3-day right of rescission in my state that they're violating.

This is a money-grab by Blizzard and it would be nice if a class-action attorney group stepped up to pursue refunds for unhappy customers. They have clearly failed at 2 provisions regarding faulty digital content: 1) of satisfactory quality, 2) as described by seller. (I didn't see any disconnect warnings in any advertising campaigns). So if/when this happens, Blizzard doesn't just deserve it, they actively earned it for themselves.

I hope the game works fine for whoever reads this, but just to re-iterate below:

Level scaling removes any power gains that you might get. if you do not get decent gear for your level and invest in right skill you will just get weaker and weaker with each level ! I simply do not see how this game can be consider a upgrade from D3 or even D2. All the things people complained about in D3 are still there they are just more hidden this time and nothing good from D3 has carried over. Open world is empty and you will feel like every location is the same. The only good things are the campaign and graphics which are upgrade compare to previous games, but other then that you are paying 70 $ to play a worse game. Either play D3 or D2 or even POE as all of them are cheaper and offer greater arpg experience. At the moment I am treating this game as early access and hope they can fix it soon.

The gameplay is smooth as butter, the itemization is polished to a diamond, and the story brought me to tears. It takes the best of each of its predecessors and refines the gameplay systems to near perfection.

The tone and atmosphere are everything one loves about Diablo I and II with a modern graphical varnish that shines (burns?) with the best of them. Each story beat has a grim bit impactful emotional hook that brings characters to life (and death) like no other Blizzard narrative has. You question your own character's decisions, even while agreeing they are the best viable option. Even the side quests had me locked into the lore, with compelling characters and interesting plotlines.

The complexity is immense but is rolled out in such a way that each new layer is learnable without the need for external guides. In other ARPGs I find item comparison to be tedious and often not viscerally impactful. In Diablo IV, you will be compelled to try a new build with just about every new Legendary aspect and Unique you find. The subclasses are distinct yet optionally intertwined, allowing for countless different approaches to slaying the demons that plague Sanctuary.

I've already put hundreds of hours into this game and my excitement continues to build. I imagine I will be playing this game for many years. Don't miss it!

As an ARPG, it's an insult to the ARPG genre. Imagine playing Need for Speed or Forza, but having to stop at a red light every 100 meters. Well, that's exactly how it feels to play D4. From terrible inventory management to tedious travel from point A to point B, and the lack of mob density or unnecessary obstacles, it quickly becomes apparent that it's just an unrewarding experience.

In an attempt to be everything—an MMO, an ARPG, and a captivating story—it falls short. The game lacks a clear focus, and its attempt to incorporate various genres only highlights its deficiencies. Rather than excelling in any one aspect, it disappoints across the board

-Frequent lag, so bad there's rubberbanding, makes play frustrating - Don't bother playing at weekends when the lag can be so bad it's borderline unplayable.
-The game itself has absolutely no sense of achievement; it's far too easy - after 5 days of playing I found myself playing on the highest tier of difficulty: Torment. For context this is about as difficult as watching Bambi. There is no endgame - with the right build (not hard to achieve) you can one shot kill most bosses - It's a joke.

Blizzard are charging AAA++ and taking you for a mug.

you basically farm gold from level 70 onwards..

also you need to deal with forced renown grind (gives Skill points so you basically cannot skip this) - you better like exploring the (huge) map to the full. Every Area feels kinda the same (levelscaling.)..

should be better when this extended beta is finished (read with Expansion 2 + 3 more patches) - so buy in sale then - you are not missing out right now.

Almost all logic in the game is like praying to Lilith shrines to defeat Lilith.

There is so much dumb things in D4. Blizzard really needs good pioneer. Almost every popular Diablo like is better than D4.

Most complaints are about level up system. Every level up u're weeker and u need more time to defeat enemy. Lot of minor bosses are much harder than Andariel and other main bosses.

U can compensate your weakness with very boring loot system. There is also badly designed GUI. Its hard to find some important stats. Lazy players like me - ignore loot system until some lvl when u need to compensate the difference. Every skill at the end looks the same as at beginning. U have to use mostly usless skills and u have not many options to adapt them like in D3. Mount And Blade has better fun with simplicity, and physics if u want to do some simplicity - do the same with world immersion.

There should be or only mana or just stamina and mana spheres. Skills/ultimates which are using only time for regeneration are too dumb (even in other diablo like game)
Skill tree with passives is very bad. Passives shouldnt be mixed with skills, but skills should have some tuning options (for example AOE or Single enemy target toggle). I hate ideas when there is for examle every 3-rd of skill effect, but u just shoot. Its very dumb. Too many skill mechanics are like this - totally unreal - like rules for children (u must be naive and agree with some conditions). Please be next time more immersive.

Only master level tree is some good idea but its only available at end of the game. This way it shouldnt exist.

Sklills should be learned, and mastered. D2 or Grim Dawn have bad skill system. Even if its bad in GD its way better than this system.

Story is avarage, world ideas are avarage.

Gameplay - camera is much too close to player. Its a specially dumb when u fight some shooting boss from edge of the screen, U need to attack from bottom, becouse u see more and next thing, u too often dont see enemy in buildings. U enter the building and the hood is not disappearing. Even if it disappear its very bad when u cant see what u are shooting. Same problems with large pillars. If there is too lot of enemies there is also much harder with this camera and u think - "why its not mount and blade" and game about army vs army. PvE is not immersive and players mostly are the problem to do what do u want or just pause the game and do the poop.

Only graphics and world is nice, and some multiplayer features. But still in single player i wish to pause game during the fight. It should be an option even online.

As for me D4 is hopeless game. U create some GoKu OP character which has problems with avarage characters at end of the game. There is also no fun with loot - its to routine and so much unimmersive.

Do you enjoy ARPGs with good loot and an exciting, yet challenging gameplay loop? Well keep perusing the store shelves because this isn't it.

Loot: One word. Abysmal. I can't count how "Big Bads" i've killed during the story and exploring that drop two measly pieces of loot that wouldn't even have been good 10 levels prior. Chest loot is not any better. Treasure Goblins need to be renamed to Trash Goblins. Everything looks the same and is littered with word salad to make you think it's good. But fear not. If you want great looking gear, all you have to do is open that wallet again and head on into the store. That's where the real effort went into gear design.

Combat: Combat is fun for about the first 20 levels. And then the realization that you will be using the same few skills for 80 more levels comes crashing down on you. Most skills are boring to use and look at. Everything else are passives that add little to no value to your build. Enemies will stun lock you constantly as the only way the game can pose a challenge is to take control away from the player. I remember another game that tried a similar approach. Warhammer Online relied heavily on CC'ing the player. How's that game doing? Oh right, it shut down 2 years after launch. Good model to follow Blizz.

Also, get used to fighting the exact same enemies over and over again regardless of zone. 20 hours in I was done with combat and just running from quest to quest.

Dungeons: Remember the feeling of delving deep into a dungeon, each level taking you closer to Hell and giving you the feeling of impending doom? Well forget that and get to finding the two keys that unlock the boss door or untying 5 bodies from stakes. Why? Creative Bankruptcy. Now get to it.

MMO BS: Collect 5 flowers, fill this flask, go get my dry cleaning. This crap has no place in an ARPG. It is useless filler created by the same creatively bankrupt people mentioned above.

No new classes: If this isn't proof of the lack of creativity the D4 team possess, then I don't know what is. They couldn't even be bothered to create a new class. They literally ripped the classes from D2, renamed the Assassin and called it a day. I have no clue what they worked on for all these years when all they did was copy Brevik and Co's hard work. Although, I would put every cent to my name on them selling a new class.

In short, I hate this game. I really, really hate it. It's the kind of game that comes out an makes me question gaming as a hobby all together. This game is a store first and a playable game 126th.

TLDR: Why are you here if you don't want to read?

    Good sound tracks
    Skills are okay

Itemisation is bad as over engineered
Scaling is terrible as everything scales with you
There is a lack of variety of things to do
The game feels empty although the world is massive Don't listen to the professional reviews, for whatever reason they don't seem to understand what makes a good game.

This game is super boring, the gameplay makes you sleepy, your character won't get better by leveling up making the core principles of the game useless and I don't like the camera.. This is my first diablo and my last. I am really struggling to understand why people puts so many hours into this nonsense, borring and repetitive mess.

Can people stop hyping the graphics they aren't even good? Anything looks good in comparison to d3 btw but d4 looks pretty bad for a 2023 title from a AAA company. No ray traced lighting or shadows in a game that is primarily in dimly lit environments. Poor graphics for a modern title.

This game is pretty good grind simulator. However the dopamine hits aren't as good as in Diablo 2, maybe not even as in Diablo 3. There are a lot of quests and content, yet all of it is without any soul. The gameplay is a bit fun, however you are shoehorned into 2 builds per character that are actually worth anything, if you don't want the game to be complete slogfest by Tier 4. Diablo IV is a nice addition to the franchise that executes the Diablo formula well in terms of gameplay. Visually it is far superior to the cartoony Diablo III and seem to be somewhat of a return to the visual style of Diablo II.

The music and sound effects are top-notch, and they add a lot to the atmosphere and gameplay satisfaction. The story sadly is the weakest link. other games

The music and sound effects are top-notch, and they add a lot to the atmosphere and gameplay satisfaction.

The story sadly is the weakest link. other games tried to steer away from the more problematic aspects of the world lore and simply left them up in the air, which is a great choice. but starting with Diablo III we started to get a more American Hollywood like story and trying to over explain everything to the player.
While Diablo III had some of that it didn't get to the silly lengths Diablo IV goes in trying to simplify and explain the story to the player while making every character and event a hollow shell of what could have been.

The main story as well as the side content are mostly forgettable. it's sad Blizzard decided to take a more Hollywood like route in terms of storytelling. it doesn't fit Diablo and doesn't do justice to the game.

Nyrelle is the most useless character out of the bunch and could be cut completely from the game without meaningfully changing the story. story points are forced, and it doesn't even try to seem like it evolves organically. Vigo is another silly character that later is even shoved in some kind of armor/contraption that doesn't make sense in the context of Diablo.

Hardcore players might want to wait. as with Diablo III there are some issues with this game at launch which can cause you to lose many hours of gameplay for reasons outside of the game or your control. (They did mention they are going to add fixes for all of that)

the cringe marketing prior to this game maybe should've clued me in to the level of storytelling in this entry.

also, since it is extremely important... the always online BS continues and guts the HC experience. it's maddening to lose characters to server/game issues and there are more than a few. g*da*nit Blizzard! Again?!
And to put the final nail in the coffin... scaled difficulty. this destroys the game. and how tiers work is dogs**t.
I was bored out of my mind by the end of the campaign from the repetitiveness and lack of challenge.

TL;DR - A Good game in terms of game-play, sound, music, visuals but laughably weak storytelling and there's nothing new under the sun after you finish the short and unimaginative campaign.

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.
