In general, the show isn't as immersive as it should be. The world, at times, is depicted as dark and brutal but too many times it seems bright and joyful. In the world of the Witcher there is poverty, corruption, adultery, pain and misfortune for the most part. The magic is shinny rather than dark and fits more a Harry Potter movie. Costumes seems cheap and as people mentions... we 've seen better in cosplay! CGI is poor overall ans storytelling is lacking where people who are new to The Witcher franchise have hard time understanding whats going on... Overall the series is lacking and I wonder how lots of people give it a "10". Expand

This takes place on another planet in another dimension where portals periodically show up and drop random people and creatures into this world from a variety of others including our own. The geography is distinct from Eastern Europe which means it isn’t Europe.

Besides, why do people assume there are no black elves? Africa is where humans first evolved. Having black people in the setting isn’t unrealistic or surprising.

While I do wish they casted Triss as well as they did Yen, I’m not going to bring politics into a story. In the end, it’s a great show that only suffers from its ambition getting ahead of its limited resources. I recommend it to anyone that doesn’t get have seizures over skin pigment.

I love the games but still liked this too. I was sceptical at first when i saw some of the cast and saw little of the trailers, but it turned out great. the only critique i have is a major and just small little nit-picky things.
I didnt like Yennefer plot so much, it felt pushed and not alot was going on as i always wanted to go back to Geralt or ciri's story plot. Then the story time jumps was little confusing but i get why they decided to do it.

Then the casting for some characters like Triss i didnt like, the end scene with Geralt and Ciri finally meeting could have been better and nilfards armor is just stubidly **** looking hopefully that Changes in the next season. But those are just minor complains.

Overhaul great start for a series and was better than i expected it to be. I can't wait to see more as i see the passion of the actors, the crew and Netflix they had for this, especially Henry cavill who loves the Witcher and Geralt. 8/10 for me.

While reading this review, understand that I have not read the books or played the video-games so I came into it as close to not knowing anything about the world of the Witcher as one could but now I am completely hooked. Season 1 starts of rather "meh" with Episode 1 (it was okay but didn't blow me away) but each episode after just kept getting better and better where by the end of season 1 I didn't want to stop watching. So what's good? Well, firstly, Henry Cavill is a complete badass and a brilliant Geralt (again coming from someone who hasn't read the books or explored the games). I started off worrying that he would be a monotone character with little depth who just broods all the time and does his best attempt at a Batman voice impression but over 8 episodes you really see the character of Geralt grow and evolve. Cavill really knocks it out of the park; with his acting and the help of great makeup and costume team, he really transforms into Geralt and not just superman with a white wig on. So bravo!

Apart from Cavill, The Witcher has also has a wealth of great supporting cast and characters which all add their own interesting storylines and quirks to show. Without going into detail, the character of Yennifer has one of the most interesting storylines and journeys of the whole show. The Bard character also adds some really great comic relief and humor. What's also a strength of The Witcher's cast of character is is they feel real and gritty and filled with flaws. The writers do a great job of balancing those strengths and flaws.

What did feel like a bit of a challenge sometime was the 3 main storylines did sometimes get a little muddy/hard to follow especially when the show doesn't make the "timelines" very clear upfront (which may not be an issue for people familiar with these characters). To add to the challenge they also add in quite a number of new names and faces at the audience which was also a little difficult to keep track of. However, sticking with it definitely pays off and as various storylines come together it becomes clearer and clearer (also Googling helps).

Finally, one of the strongest things about the Witcher is the world that is created on screen. If you're a fan of fantasy then you'll no doubt love this show. There are a ton of very cool magic spells, fantastical creatures and host of classical fantasy tropes/must haves: taverns, quests, epic monster fight sequences, wenches, battling armies and the list goes on.

Overall, if you are fantasy fan then give The Witcher a shot. It's not a perfect show but it's a lot of fun and it seems to only get better.

Other than being pissed, I'm DISAPPOINTED. Bad acting and directing. Weak as **** writing. Seen better costumes in Cosplay pics. How's that happen? CGI looks like crap, too.

I see many 10s for this show and can't imagine how anyone thinks this show is great. Guess FOOLS accept anything. Guess they don't realize they weaken the Witcher legacy and support an ass-backwards kind of racism by rewarding this garbage.

I have never written a review about anything and published it online, but this time, I feel like I have to spread the word.
I came in with low expectations, since I saw some of the casting choices and the "meh" trailers. I should also say that I'm an avid fan of the games, although I have never read the books.

I was absolutely blown away by the show. It gripped me from front to finish with its fantastic acting, genius writing, epic music, perfectly timed humor, I could go on. From Geralt to Yennifer to Ciri to Queen Calanthe, the range on these actors in the multitude of situations they're put in is insane. They all portray their characters, as far as I am aware of, wonderfully. Storytellingwise, they conveyed, in the first episode alone, the chemistry between the different people and made me care for them enough that what came later in the episode really impacted me. I don't think there has ever been a series that has managed that with me. Usually, when writers make big scenes for characters that I've only just met, it falls flat on its face but not here. What the show also does is set up mysteries and unknown that are slowly unravelled and paid out immensely. Without spoiling too much, they make use of multiple timelines - something they don't outright say but that becomes clearer over the first few episodes. When these timelines are merged later, it is fluid, epic and makes sense. Not something I can say of most series, once again.
The action is some of the best I've ever seen, without the hollywood shaky cam. Everything is deliberate, brutal and visible. The timing on the humor had me laughing out loud more times than I remember, not just from Dandelion but Geralt and the entire cast.

Now to get to what every 0 here has pointed out: the casting. I had my concerns as well, as to whether those decisions are somehow indicators of other bad decisions. And whether it would rip me out of the immersion. But no. It could have - but it didn't, because everything else was so goddamned good. I stopped noticing already during the first episode. Maybe also because there were so few examples of where it went wrong. Sure, I'm kind of distanced from Triss because she isn't the Triss I know from the games, but her acting was great, really. Didn't throw me off too much, I just have to relearn some emotional attachments. This series is anything but a political message and to all those who are so convinced it is: you're just the same as the people who would like one to be in every movie. This series is a masterpiece. And I can't wait for more. Maybe in some parts with a smidge more budget so they can really run wild, but with what they did with so little, I have no qualms either way ;) .

P.S.: I love Dandelion. Just wanted to put that out there.

Terrible dialogues, a world that feels anything but medieval and a very confusing storyline that made no sense most of the time with events that don't seem to matter at all.

Also, while I absolutely don't mind seeing naked people in a tv show, they should fit in with the storyline. The first 2 episodes were all about displaying naked women for absolutely no reason. I guess this is a cheap attempt at seeming like Game of Thrones, but to me it feels like a cheap copy. The Witcher has none of the grace that GoT had (in the beginning).

In GoT I also really cared for the characters, nothing could be further from the truth here. Every character feels shallow - unlike with Ned Stark, I really wouldn't care if any of them died in the next episode. To be honest, i don't really expect anything from the next episode - everything that has happened just felt so random and pointless. We know the main characters are important because they get a lot of screentime, not because they actually do anything. If you removed the witcher from The Witcher, everything would probably turned out exactly the same.

And I am happy to say my fears were unfounded. While the show did take some liberties with the story overall, the premise stays remarkably close to the source material. Henry is amazing as Geralt, with his grunts being the best part of the lot. The action sequences are brutal and well-choreographed. The settings both indoors and out are amazing and true to my mind's eye view of the world. It all really does come together fantastically to tell an awesome story and set the basis for what I hope will be a long ride. Side Note 1: This does not take place in "Eastern Europe". Many people are complaining about the "diversity" of the cast and how that is unrealistic by medieval European standards. Well, I hate to break it to you, but this is FANTASY FICTION that takes place on the Continent, an entirely made-up place.
Side Note 2: Get over yourselves if you have an issue with diversity. Everything is made up and your points don't matter. These books feature women as some of the strongest characters there are and the diversity in the Race of the actors who are playing make-believe characters only means something to you if you do not like the races in question outside of fictional universes. You have a whole other problem if that is what is stopping you from actually enjoying something that is well-made and lovingly crafted. Sucks that internet gave you a voice and let you believe anyone cared enough for you to use it. Side note 3: I hope Metacritic has enough sense and courage to go through and delete the hate and vitriol from these snowflake conservative racist incels and remove them from the site. They are destroying this site and negatively impacting the reviews and scores for almost anything worth merit.

- ...except golden lizard
- poor scenography in some places
- mess with chronologic lines(but only at the beginning)
- Freya Allen as Ciri
- Battle of Sodden looks like small skirmish

The settings, costumes, cinematography, and overall great acting really bring everything to life in a way that is entertaining and compelling. It took me a few episodes to figure out which scenes were flashback versus present day, but I really liked that aspect of it. I have a few minor issues with things like Geralt switching between a British and American accent, Geralt using the wrong kind of sword for the fight he was in, Triss not having red hair, and a very low number of monsters, but those are easily overlooked. I'm hooked and can't wait for season 2. 8 out of 10

I had to give this a perfect 10 review just to offset the kooks who give it a straight up 0. It's a fictional story set in a fictional realm. It's not Medieval Europe. It's not even Earth.
