Henry Cavill is usually like watching cardboard dry (except man From Uncle, big perfect guys are so much better with a little self deprecating humor). The first episode was well made but overall blah. But then something interesting happens, this show gets really really good. Very well photographed, well edited, well written, original exciting, scary. lots of variety, not just monster of the week episodes. Make up was really good, lots of beautiful girls with the best kind of figures. Monster effects were the most impressive part, honestly I have never seen better monster cgi, and am very picky about that kind of thing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's not a complete disaster, but it's not a really good series either. Cavill was the only one who tried to keep the immersion while the rest of the cast obviously didn't care that much. It's not only the looks of the characters aside from Geralt. It's also the way they talk. Sometimes making metaphors and references which don't fit into the witcher world because they don't exist there. Here a little example from episode 2: Dandelion picks up the small stone Geralt got shot with from the Sylvan and compares it to a tiny cannonball. This should be actually impossible since firearms don't exist yet. There is already gunpowder called Zerrikanian Powder, but only Alchemists and Witcher actually use it.

The itself plot is chaotic, constantly jumping around and obviously extremly compressed to fit into 8 episodes. The battles often make no sense as both sides constantly forget how to fight. Like in the battle of the first episode where both side forgot that bows and spears exist. Also Cintra thinking that cavalry should be used like simple infanty.

The fight scenes with Cavill are really good, thats one of the things they actually managed to nail. Dandelion is just as annoying and loveable as in the games.

I don't blame people stopping watching after just 2 or 3 episodes. The first ones are really flawed. I'm not only talking about the forced diversity, the obvious budget cuts (that Sylvan especially) and the many small offputting details they got wrong.

The poor reviews for this show stem from irrelevant and uninterested parties, some of which didn’t even watch the full series; serious, some of them skipped a few episodes and still feel that their judgement is valid. Nonetheless, this adaptation of the Witcher is easily one of the best originals on Netflix. All the work put into this masterpiece of a first season successfully captures both the novel and game series, the balance is struck perfectly. The casting is terrific, however there are a few roles which could have been changed, such as the actress who portrays Triss Merrigold (I’m a hardcore Witch video game fan so this choice doesn’t sit will with me). However the actress’s work does not fall short of excellent, so the experience was not impacted for me. This first season has not only rekindled my love for the Witcher series, but it also has secured Netflix’s subscription in my bank account. This show could have so easily been tarnished through executive agendas and bad writing, but this sets the bar for how well done future adaptations, and shows in general, should be done. I am so thankful for this wonderful and exciting new journey that Geralt will embark on, and I can’t wait for season two. Expand

Many people may not like the diversity in this show and even myself as a black I was like (hmm a black elf, that's... I don't know) and the reason people may have a problem with that it's because elves have probably not represented like that, so we grew up with this idea. -0,5 for unprofessional directing of some scenes, thankfully they had Alik Sakharov for few better episodes
-0,5 for poor CGI at times, strange costumes (too modern), bad acting, dialogs and reasoning.
That is a very generous score, because the show still has promise when they get to more linear books, hopefully they won't butcher that.
P.S. Episodes 4-5 were the worst, actress who played Tissaia the best

All involved should be proud of their work on this project. Admittedly, without having read the books or played the games I can understand that it might be challenging to keep up with the flashbacks and flashforwards in the timeline. Some captioning might have helped alleviate this. All three of the leads played their parts perfectly. I was initially skeptical of the casting of HC for the role of Geralt, but seeing his passion about the project and the work that he putinto the role I'm glad that my initial skepticism was 100% wrong. AC also excelled in the role of Yennefer. Again, I was concerned about this casting choice as AC had few past credits on which to assess how she would care in this role. I was so impressed with her portrayal of Yennefer which is to me, embodied the complex character from the novels. Ditto with FA in her role as Ciri. In terms of the story and flow, aside from the sometimes confusing jumps in the timeline, LH and her writers did such a wonderful job piecing together the source material. I'm not sure if some of these professional critics understand the daunting challenge that LH and her team faced in adapting the source material which, TBH, is more than a little disjointed to start with. Henry Cavill doesn't plays a role of Geralt of Rivia, he just narcissistic posing for the camera, probably, for Superman it's cool, but not for Witcher. Others actors just cardboard dolls, serve only for decorations as other cheap stuff.

Well, on the plus side that's what, on a wave of unjustified hype around The Witcher by Netflix and thrilled reviews about it, there's a possibility that CD Project RED finally go back to game's Geralt of Rivia and whole Witcher Universe.

Might be slightly confusing for people who do not know the world of the witcher. Giving people realistic conversations that sound like all parties are fully aware and actually exist in the world without having it sound like a total expedition dump is not easy. Shows tend to go one of two ways. They try to hard to explain things and it's hard to believe in this fantasy world when you are watching characters who are acting like they been in the world as long you have. Or they go the game of thrones route and let people talk about history and wars and things that the viewer will not know about with risk of losing viewers because they don't understand what is happening. Game of thrones had perfect writing to drops little hints of lore whilst being engaging and getting people invested. Witcher does not have that. There is alot of lore dumping and not alot to grip you and pull you in unless you sell yourself on this world and the characters. If you are intrigued in the world though, if you can lose yourself in a bunch of characters and story it's a really fun ride. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Henry CavillNo one really realized that the Pilot's dialogues were unbearable and condemned the series to lose half its audience before the final titles? Really? Where was the director to throw that script in the executive producer's face? Henry Cavill has had a career break in this series that reminds us of what happened to Travis Fimmel in Warkraft. I have a theory: some Netflix enlightened person, overwhelmed by the risk of his neck in such a manna of money, must have thought of putting some videogame freak as a scriptwriter and he killed the series with a runaway script, for fear of the gamers' reaction. There are many really stupid phrases that can only be understood in the context of the endless chatter of the gamers in front of the video game screen. On that altar Henry Cavill has been sacrificed, to whom I send a warm hug because he should be the next James Bond, and to all of us, who should already ask Netflix for the complaint form for this crap. Trash scenario, foolish dialogs, nonsense tattered clips instead of normal series, unnecessary characters, SJW, lost all sense which there is in books/games. No, it's not The Witcher, and for just fantasy series its too weak implementation.

(This is coming from a hardcore Witcher series fan and i can tell that CDProjekt Red crew were actuall diehard fans of Sapkowski's work just as me and i cant tell the same about Lauren) Strong 5/10 because its worth a watch but remember that books are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better.

P.S. Show isn't canon but with Sapkowski's such well writen characters its tough to simply forget their characteristics and go along with Lauren's Vision.

When Iheard that Superman was playing Geralt, I was prepared for disappointment. It wasn't until I saw the 2nd trailer that I became interested. I am a fan of the games and have not heard much about the books, so I am coming from that perspective. I have to say that this show won me over and did so rather quickly. My initial thoughts on the casting was that it really took me by surprise. I thought the choices made were a bit odd, however, each character ends up feeling believable. Now, I really appreciate the unassuming casting that the show has. No one stands out as the expected perfect fit, which makes the characters feel fresh and appropriate in what feels like a well built chaotic world. If everything were perfect, this show, like everything else on film today, would feel formulaic. Instead I find myself pleasantly surprised by finally not knowing what to expect from Hollywood. The key beats in the story are there and names and places all feel familiar, but nothing feels "typical". This isnt a perfect show, but it does a great job of pacing each character's story through the season so that you understand the motivations, relationships and political situations in the world. the sword play is fantastic and it has a great balance of episodic one off episodes with a steady moving larger story line. something that most TV shows fail miserably at. Superman plays Geralt in a way where he starts to feel like the obvious pick for the role. Both Yennifer and Geralt's characters are complex and understandably jaded. The show is a good blend of action, romance, hope, humor and world building. my main complaint is that its only 8 episodes. a great 1st season that sets the series up for a bright future. Expand

Metacritic deleted huge "red" reviews, but left 10/10 trash, for example:
"Great fantasy show"
"A good series"
"Everything is great"
"Excellent Adaptation! 10/10 great!"
"Its Epic"
"Amazing acting by Cavil"
"Great TV show"
"Amazing!! IT was worth waiting for it. Great plot, story and scenario."

or this one:
"Ignore the low review trolls, this is a solid fantasy series with great production and decent writing. Cavill nails the role as do the actresses playing lead roles..."

So, Metacritic "ignore the low review" only high review trolls left.
================

About The Witcher by Netflix

pros:
- No...OK, ok Henry Cavill read books, play games.

cons:
- It's all cheap, battles are terrible
- Trying to please as newcomers as well fans of books/games. Eventually makes shapeless nonsense

Hissrich cut off important stories, and events from book, but added unnecessary fictional storylines and characters and because of it the whole thing on the series lost all sense. Maybe if this series would have been released in 1995, and named some Henry Cavill: Warrior Prince , so, yes, it's worth it to 8/10. But it named The Witcher, and this name is only what The Witcher by Netflix has. Game of Thrones has many shortcomings (some actors, cut off some thing from book, etc), but first seasons it was on the right track. The Witcher by Netflix turned the wrong way in the beginning.

Amazon maybe you can to make a good fantasy series.

P.S. Henry, the PC Master Race ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not thrilled about this series. Narrative is messy. My boyfriend hasn't read the books, so he was confused by the plot, he couldn't understand what's going on. Why the show shows us the fall of Cintra, Heralt's adventures and Yennefer's youth at the same time and there is no indications that all that happened in the different times, there are decades between these events. And in the next episode we see a story about Pavetta and Urcheon of Erlenwald...
The cast isn't perfect. I like Henry Cavill as Herald, he looks not like Heralt from the books, but like Heralt from the games and he is so beautiful man

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am quite let down by many things involving this show, I love the books and price the games, however this TV show managed to make all of it fall out of place. The good, or should I say the best, part of the show is Geralt, he is everything I ever imagined for a TV representation of the character. I also liked the fact the they kept it true to the books, however I believe they made a mistake eating up two books in just one season.
The bad is almost everything else... Jaskier's song didn't feel contemporary to the show, I hate it so much... Acting is all over the place, Nilfgaard's armor is terrible, relationship between characters is inconsistent, time jumps are confusing, Ciri's character is underdeveloped as well as her relationship with Geralt, which by this point in the books was already close. The VFX and creature design is mediocre, specially that dragon. In conclusion I fear that if they don't fix this show by the next season I will stick with the books and the games, I don't what to feel as if I'm watching American horror story Fantasy edition. (Awful show by the way).
Please fix this...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. According to the showrunner, they did not adapt the series of games (although thanks to this series the Witcher gained worldwide popularity and showed interest in Sopkovsky’s books), they adapted the book. The only thing they adapted is the position of SJW (political and moral principles). I am a citizen of Russia, we have no problems with social equality and racism (in ancient times we ourselves were slaves, and even at home), so I can say what I think, because I have every right to do so. Almost everything is bad in this series, from Slavic there are only my tears (as a citizen of Russia). A completely incoherent plot and narrative, timelines often alternate, this is very confusing, because of this, the narrative collapses and the victim becomes the amount of content that could be shown to us (for example, to reveal characters). A very bad caste of actors, if there are no questions to Renfrey, Strygobor, Myshovur, Kalante, Yenifer and Tissay, then there are questions to the rest. Geralt of What's up with your face? - the actor is trying hard, it is respectful, but he does not fit the image of the canonical Witcher, he looks more like a medieval swordsman from a bad movie from the 90s. Cirri of Mediocrity - the young actress came to the set early, her game is so bad and artificial that she wants to deprive herself of her eyes surgically, she even shows a bad acting in passive scenes and they both wear cheap lenses from the sale of Anime Con with Geralt, which cause the effect of the ominous valley. Dandelion of Banality - this is the most typical image of an idiot from all road movies, it completely killed charisma and interest in the character, there was only irritation. Kagyr of Kylo Ren taught you nothing? - for the main antagonist, he has a too cute and harmless face of a teenager, he should have caused alarm, but only laughter. Fringilla of Kenya - ... African-Americans in medieval Polish fantasy, this is how to make a film about the adventures of an African tribe with the participation of white actors, such a solution is only necessary to show strength and independence, that's all! Triss of Gypsy camp - a woman simply walked along the road with a request to gilt her hand, but ended up on the set (in the first frame with her, she read gypsy curses), and she also made a straw shield against armed knights and caught fire with him (apparently this is an ancient gypsy technique). About the other actors, one can say about the same thing, by what principle they were taken into the film, only God knows ... well, Lauren Hissrich. The disgusting design of almost all the costumes, the black stretched scrotum of the Nilfgard knights, glued pieces of aluminum on the bodies of the Tsintra warriors, dresses from children's mornings by sorceresses and nobles, the peasants walk in sacks of potatoes (although this is most likely to be the case). Poor locations and surroundings, everything seems to be made of cardboard dissolving in water (so that after the shooting everything is quickly disposed of). Computer effects and models are worthy only of laughter, hello from the 2000s, I had the same face as the sylvan from the middle of the second series. The production of many scenes raises a lot of questions, such as the final scene from the 7th series, what kind of attacks of epilepsy are in Ciri and the film crew, do you even understand how wretched this looks? And the battle scenes? Oh my God! There was only hope for them when the witcher performs a ritual of preparing for a battle with monsters, cooks and drinks potions, lubricates a silver sword, turns crazy pirouettes around his enemies ... forget about it at all! The battle at the end of the first series was cool, it gave hope and immediately took it away (the battle in the palace, the battle for the dragon egg where the sorceress waves a sword and dagger instead of magic, which is absurd at the space level, the final battle near the bridge), all at the theater level staging. They said that there will be an emphasis on female characters (although the Witchers have always been at the center of the story), I do not care, so be it, but do it well, and not like in this series. Hissrich with her team wanted to jump above her head, and fell to the very bottom of the absurd. Have you ever seen black elves somewhere? I understand everything, you always want to prove something to someone, but to do it in the universe of Slavic fantasy, it looks ridiculous and causes only facepalm. The franchise's Europeanization only killed all its originality, atmosphere, love of originality, and showed that personal views and ideals are more important than art and the viewers.
P.S. I am very sorry for my terrible English.

The whole setting feels like a cheap fantasy movie, from funny looking armor to the very narrative of the series. The only exception I guess is the witcher himself, which makes it look like he was dropped onto the wrong movie set. The storyThe whole setting feels like a cheap fantasy movie, from funny looking armor to the very narrative of the series. The only exception I guess is the witcher himself, which makes it look like he was dropped onto the wrong movie set. The story is jam packed, which wouldn't be a bad thing if it were polished, but instead they throw at you stuff that lacks any foundation whatsoever. It feels shallow, there's no depth to the world they're trying to build. Racial diversity is great unless it's forced and that's how it is about everything in this TV show. It could all look good if it were in the right place and at the right time, but instead you're led to believe that the population that's at its lowest point, slitting each other throats for petty differences has somehow managed to overcome racial prejudices and even go woke by today's standards. It's silly and it doesn't sell. The second episode was promising, it introduces the lead female character Yennefer we see in the trailer, which is a deformed young woman who's beaten and bullied around, but who's later discovered by mages to have the ability to control magic in a profound way (also seen in the trailer). I was like, oh hell, finally a real strong female character we've all been waiting for, one who'll despite her deformities and flaws bring the world to heel and prove that physical looks and sex are not the most important factors for a female character. But no, few episodes later she is literally (SPOILER AHEAD) turned by magic into a Slavic Cinderella and it's all Mary Sue from that point on. What a waste... I never played the game, but I hope it's better than this. Expand

Netflix, what the hell are you doing?

Dark elves, not black ones and please give me back my Fringilla

Diversity, SJW-propaganda? Nope, it doesn't work this way

Apart from the good world building, this series has bad acting and poor direction. I am really disappointed.
