Great show. It condensates the very complex themes in the novels in an easy to digest format. The series is not perfect due to the lack of proper introduction to the world of the Witcher and a better explanation for the timeline

This utter tripe has been made at a crucial time. Just long enough after Game of Thrones metaphorically hung itself, so that everyone is still on the medieval magic hype train. Just long enough after Game of Thrones metaphorically hung itself, so that everyone is still on the medieval magic hype train. I am often cynical of being slaves to critics reviews, but on this case they got it ****ing bang on. This drivel is designed to appeal to the most basic bi tch imaginable. Nevermind the shoddy acting, bizzare pacing and lack of story telling. Stick Henry the Hunk Caville in front of the screen and slap in an abundance of boobs, ass and fighting and you'll make money Netflix. No game has ever been made into a successful movie/tv show, and the Witcher is just the latest in a long line of spectacular failures. The fact that Metacritic has messed about with the reviews is shameful. Let's all have a toast and drink to Henry Cavilles' agent. Who managed to get a man with as much charsima as a lamp post acting work.

If you enjoyed the last series of Game of Thrones, Jar Jar Binks or the Transformers Movies, you are in for an absolute treat with The Witcher. Enjoy your lowest common denominator.

Just did not like it. I dont have to give a reason why. I just hate netflix. They should not have been put in charge of making a show on this franchise.

Cavill delivers pitch-perfect expletives :)

Great adaptation - good choice to run Ciri and Yen's backstories in parallel from the start, as they not only set up those characters but also key elements of the setting. I loved the jumping between time periods which felt very consistent with the patchwork-vignette structure of Sapkowski's books, and a fresh way of interleaving backstory with "the present". Cast are excellent.

Criticisms: lots of nudity which wasn't entirely necessary (though it does speak to Yen's character), and a few lines that were too contemporary (eg. "off-grid"). Even the weaker episodes are still fun though. I was already a fan of the games and books but this show has made my uninitiated wife a fan of the Witcher.

Also want to take a moment to laugh at all the racists moaning about PoC in the cast. You're fine with a Continent full of interdimensional monsters, but not people with different skin tones because you think everyone in this world should be Polish? Geralt will bathe in your tears :)

Instead of the original story of dark fantasy, you get a lesson in political correctness.
Henry Cavill seems the only one in the project who is interested in him. His work is excellent.
The project itself is disgusting.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If I wouldn’t know books and games, I would probably give 6 points, but I give 4. Absolute lack of atmospheric and immersion, mainly because of jumping on the timeline and crumpledness, did the trick, you just start to plunge into what is happening, right there some ridiculous nonsense is going on, such as shelling the Cyntrian gates with fire arrows to break the mage’s barrier, instead of shooting down Myshovur from the window. Eist on the battlefield without a helmet, who naturally got an arrow into the head, idiot. Or Yen, who is not an imperious sorceress, but a hysterical woman with feminist presentations to everyone in a row, reading fem propaganda to a dead child. 'Lucky, you're dead. Tricked the system, right& Whaaat? Are you OK, Lauren?
'Transformation of failed sorceresses into live batteries, Geralt grabbing the blade with his bare hands, Eist, who promises to **** Calante straight before Ciri in the throne room. The rude woman and the ill-mannered Kalante, who is not in touch with the Nilf offensive, until they come right up close. By the way, that argue with Eist about who is going to be Nilfs' target, Cyntra or Sdden is pointless, vause everryone, who read the books are aware, that Cyntra is a critical point , that you should take to get ober Yaruga and attack Sodden.
Tsiri, checking Myshovur for falsehood and successfully checking, and after a second forgetting that it’s not Myshovur, does not understand why he grabs her and drags her somewhere. Yen, who abandoned Geralt due to the fact that he did not appreciate her independence when saying his last wish. Yen, who stood on the tower all the time in Sodden, looking around and going into a current battle, when everyone was almost killed. Geralt, who returned to the battle in Blaviken, although according to this version, he did not need to kill Renfrey, cause she did not put him the Tridam ultimatum. He just killed evetyone of her people, just like that..Why did he come back from the forest at all? No real motive. It is not surprising that they threw stones at him, just what he deserves. Renfry is so poor character, I wasn't even sorry for her. Why cut her story, she was so deep character, beacaues of her dark and bloody Snow White story. I was so sorry for her. In books Geralt asked for Pavetta's child not for fu, like here. I had a facepalm ,when Pavetta threw up to show her pregnancy.
Yen, waving her daggers, almost like Geralt and also kissing Geralt in battle, ignoring magic. The adult Ciri, who has no common past with Geralt, nevertheless, rushing on his arms at the first meeting (the same scene was much more dramatic in the Polish series, because Ciri is very small there and has long been familiar with Geralt). Drama doesn't work here, cause you cut critical points from source.
Yurga, offering Geralt the right of surprise to pay for saving his life, although he also managed to save Geralt’s life, and he offers to pay only ale to treat him, but no, Yurga is such a risky guy.
These are only the first things that came to mind, there are,uch more stupidity in this show.

And all this after the 4th episode becomes wildly boring. By the way, about the same thing happened when the Polish series was cut short and compilled into a full-length movie. Complete confusion, no deepness in this.
Of the benefits, only a battle with a gang in 1 episode + Chalotra's boobs. By the way, Anya played well, but it was the Yen that the scriptwriters prescribed, and she is just a teenager-hysterical, and not an adult, wise-experienced sorceress, like Sapkowsky’s. The story of Ciri is boring all the way from the beginning to the end + since she was not revealed as a character, she was completely unsympathetic to me. And I wanted to jump forward through her adventures.
In short, I liked the Polish series better, although it was stupid, but atmospheric and immersive. And this one is just useless.

Low expectations met in this Netflix-version of original slavic fantasy

A clear lack of understanding and passion for the source material shine through, in generic and forgettable take on the Witcher.

The gritty, realistic and cold universe of the books and games, is replaced by a bland and forgettable americanized version.

A version that any fan would be hard pressed to recognize if it wasn't for the inclusion of the games version of Geralt, played by Henry Cavill.

Cavill's performance is great and feels like a window to a version of what this show could have been in the hands of someone with a relationship with the source material.

The efforts of his cast-mates ranges from uninspired to the immersion-breaking.

The shows first season have more than twice the budget of History Channel's first season of Vikings - but looks cheaper. An over-reliance on CGI amplify the cheap feel.

Adding to the near impossible taks of immersion is the Netflix'ification of the cast. Everyone from main characters to extras have been given a racial overhaul.

The original Witcher univers is realistic depiction of european life in the middle ages. The dread and danger of life in the middle ages enhanced by fantasy elements.

Every monster, creature and political action is an integral part of the universe and a deep detailed lore sells the univers. Which makes this a very awkward IP to race-swap in.

Unfortunately thats the approach Netflix have chosen, and it is done without any explanation or additional lore in-universe. Further removing this version from the attention to detail, meticulous universe-building and storytelling of the source material.

They always manage to take prime material and transform it to sh...t. All main characters' stories are twisted beyond recognition and chronically mixed together. Geralt's adventures, which take 20 and more pages in a book, are shortened to half an episode's duration, resulting in incomprehensible stories. The medieval epoch is polluted with modern phrases. The bard's songs have rock'n'roll riffs. The elves live in caves instead of their forests. Completely boring and confusing at first because of a very poorly explained timeline, that's you only can understand at the end of the season (if you are a laymen
in analysis). So the episodes are hardly connected to the previous ones, and the story only begins to progress towards the end of the season. And when you get there
you are probably already lost in the drama and you are bored.

Watch this season as if it were a prelude because it focuses mostly on presenting the characters and universe of The Witcher.

In the more, the cast is amazing, Brazilian voice acting was phenomenal, well-made soundtrack, cool special effects and the characters with unique features.

The Witcher Netflix Series lacks of talent, period, lol.
if you already readed the books or played the games get ready for some brutal disapointment:

Dispite the racial oddness or the fact that characters like Triss looks Arabic or African, the Series so far reflects low budget and poorness everywhere.

the low care for basic things is amazing, Geralt suposed to lack of emotions, and in this series you find him laughing and experiencing hapynnes lmao...!

In some scenes he looks like He-man and with some black trimed facial hair.....

The CGI is cheap, old and horrid.

A huge amount of time is wasted on Lame dialogs and boring things.

This Witcher Series version Africa is one of those things that will make you even angry.

You cant tell me this show isnt better than the boring linear storytelling from 1980 crap The Mandolorian!!! I guess Netflix didnt pay you guys enough to be honest like Disney with the reviews. Its ok we know how it works. The Mandolorian was just plain boring at times no character development and just not as good but ok VENT is over....I really enjoyed this show. Didnt think it would be good but it surprised me. Was it the best show no but it definitely can be rewatched and Im definitely looking forward to season 2. I liked how they tried to do something different by telling the story through different timelines was it the best or what we are use too?? No not at all but by the end I liked how they at least tried and smoothed it out by the last episode. Not a fan of cliffhanger seasons but will give you guys a pass again for the effort. It took some brass to try and make this show being mostly connected to a video game with the books not bringing in the majority of the popularity but you pulled it off. CONGRATS!! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's really such a shame because this had the potential to be a great show and a true rival to Game of Thrones but it really has been ruined by its creators. I went in with high expectations because I felt that the they'd stay true to the universe and I thought the cast could carry it, they didn't and for the most part they can't. If you's like to read this review in brief, I though there were three main culprits: A lack of talented writers, the need to push Feminist and left-wing political causes and corporate interference.

Despite praise from the professional critics I didn't find the fight scenes especially well shot with too many jump cuts to follow properly. The music is good in places but is often infused with a sort of techno-baseline that takes you out of the universe a bit. The acting is poor in this but Yennifers is especially bad, she's been written without any kind of charm. The actress has clearly been told she's supposed to be a strong female character, but Chalotra simply can't convey a sense of confidence or strength, she cannot do what the script asks of her. Geralt has unfortunately been neutered for this show. In both the books and games he's characterised as a somewhat amoral professional, protecting the interests of only himself and his friends. This is not the case here, this Geralt is far too socially conscious preferring to kill "bad men" to any actual monsters. Don't believe me? I'm on Episode 5 and he's only killed one Monster on screen. Cavill isn't the worst fit for the part, he just looks wrong, too much of a pretty boy included for the mums. And I can't avoid the political messaging here. The Witcher is full of cynical left wing propaganda. Male characters are almost exclusively the villains and in the rare occasions where there's a female villain she's given a richer backstory and motivations for her wrongdoing, male characters are simply devoid of this. There's a lot of pro-feminist dialogue too, which Hissrick delivers mainly through Yennifer and other female side characters (who are given the bulk of the lines). Some of these lines really made me cringe too, episode 4 is particularly bad with characters given speeches that seem to ripped straight from Tumblr. The whole thing just feels downright hostile. But really my biggest compliant is all the tone is gone. The average episode ends with each plot point tied up neatly and the main characters triumphant. There's no darkness or ambiguity, no sense of danger or loss. I blame corporate interference for that but it could equally be writers who simply aren't qualified to write at this level. There are some positives to be found: the set pieces are nice and there's even some jokes that land. Freya Allen plays a great Ciri too. But that's nowhere near enough to forgive this show. Read the books, play the games, or try Game of Thrones but whatever you do, don't watch this.

If you don't rely on the experience of passing the game or reading a book, the series seemed quite independent. Scenic departures succinctly fit into the development of the plot. The first two episodes aroused dubious feelings. However, after me it was delayed and carried away. In my opinion, this is a good fairy tale, which I would love to watch at different ages. Yes, there are some flaws. But in general, very good. I give a rating of 10, because I don't agree with the opinion of critics and I want to somehow compensate for this. Sorry for my English. Expand

It is a spit in the face to anyone of polish descent that one of their most loved and famous cultural works has been completely destroyed by being completely out of any realm of reality. While it is fantasy it is so immersive breaking to have Africans walking around in the background. The amount of black people that are shoved into almost every scene is just beyond ridiculous. It is so unnatural that it feels like I’m being shovelled with propaganda rather than watching a story. The female empowerment **** the identity politics, just terrible writing in general and it’s such a shame because this was an opportunity to have a really great base of stories and you **** it completely by wanting to make a statement and fill diversity quotas rather than tell a great story. You are no storyteller Hissrich, you’re a shill paid for by big corporations to shovel your sjw politics into something that we loved and is now unrecognisable. Not only that, but are polish people not a minority? a culture that lived under nazism, the iron curtain? They deserve their stories and folklore to be told with much more respect than this. The source material should have been respected and it wasn’t. If you don’t like this show hit them where it hurts, in their pockets, don’t watch. Expand

The difference between this and GoT, for example, is that GoT feels more like it was made by people that have a grounded understanding of how the world really works, while this generally feels like nonsense fantasy made by dorks who've never really lived life outside their safe bubble. The Yenn actress was quite stunning, and I was generally not bored enough to stop watching, but I wouldn't tell people they should watch it, like I would for say GoT or Breaking Bad. The good news is I've beaten Witcher 3 and I think this show has nowhere to go but up. A couple more years of iteration, refinement, and listening to story feedback could go a long way. Verdict - If you like SyFy channel-like shows and are a fan of the series you might enjoy it, but I don't think the average person really will. Check it out in a couple more years. Expand

They should've stayed true to how the characters looked in the books. Yennefer is supposed to have pale white skin, not brown. They should've cast someone European looking. I'm so used to seeing her how she looks in the game and how she's described in the books, that I can't see her as a brown person, it's just not believable. The actress playing as Yennefer is talented and beautiful, but her look doesn't fit Yennefer. She's half Indian and that breaks immersion. I'm not unreasonable though, she could've played a Sorceress who was half Nordling and half Nilfgaard, or half Nordling and half Zerrikanian, she would've been perfect for a mixed race Sorceress, but she doesn't fit the role of Yennefer at all. I just don't see Yennefer when I look at her. The other characters also suffer from this forced inclusion, forced diversity, and forced representation, with no regard for canon. Before you think I'm racist. Hear me out. Imagine if you made Marvel's Luke Cage white. That would make no sense. That's the equivalent of making Yennefer brown. It completely breaks immersion and ruins any sense of believability. Once a character is established with certain physical features, you can't just change them, you sacrifice believability and immersion if you do that.

If this was a stage play, I wouldn't mind the characters looking so different, but this is supposed to be an accurate depiction of Witcher from the books, but it's no where near close, the poor casting destroyed immersion.

If any SJW's read this, PLEASE my dude, PLEASE stop. I'm begging you. I'm middle eastern. I'm considered brown, but I do not want your inclusion, representation and diversity nonsense. Keep that stuff away from me. You destroyed what could've been an amazing show. SJW's have no respect for canon and immersion, you people are obsessed with race instead of staying true to source material. All that matters to SJW's is using media as a conduit for social justice. I don't need to be represented on the screen, especially if it's going to disrespect the canon and change character appearances. That's only going to make people resent me for being brown.

I'm so pissed off at SJW's. What can I do? The progressives are ruining everything.

Oh, I know. I'll vote for Trump!!!

After watching the series, I got a full opinion about this series. The series is excellent, I liked it, but there are small but:
1. I did not like the actress who plays Triss;
2. It looks a little cheap (a small budget affected, but everything looks exactly fine);
3. Geralt lacks a little bit of emotion;
4. And the last is what I think is completely subjective, but lacks a little dirt. The period of the Middle Ages is nonsense, I judge so because it is my favorite genre of something.
And so I absolutely liked the series. I judge only by a series of games, the book, so far, have not read, but plan.

Henry Cavill is great portraying Geralt, but often it feels like his dialog was intentionally written to be turned into memes. The blind timeline jumping combined with several of the characters being cast substantially different from their source material seriously pulls down the enjoyment level. The audience struggling to understand who is who and when the current segment is taking place is neither clever nor engaging. It has to be great to succeed. I do find the acting leaning to the weaker side, I also do not like when directors start to mess with the main lore and start to implement their own ideas, otherwise, the title should not be "The Witcher"! CGI can be quite cheap at times and the Slavic soul of the Witcher genre is hard to find. There is also be too much "Woke" stuff which destroys immersion. On a positive note, I do think it's an entertaining series, with a lot of nostalgic Witcher moments. It's definitely not a 0, neither is it a 10, I find it close to mediocre. 6-7 out of 10. Here is a review without soilers from polish Witcher fan:
1. Confusing pacing, needed to explain everything to my family;
2. Don't like the changes in the history or making the stories much shorter and mutilated like the Renfri story with missing tridam ultimatum;
3. Dryads using crossbows (and polearms) are like a witcher using a whip;
4. Don't like the Triss - Red Head famous mage;
5. Don't like the Myszowór - he supposed to be a druid;
6. Don't like the Vilgefortz - one of the greatest mages who beat the **** out of Gerald in books, and now he is pathetic;
7. Don't like the Jaskier - he just don't stand any chance with the original and polish voice acting of Zbigniew Zamachowski;
8. I liked Tissaia and Calanthe
9. And yes I agree 'Toss A Coin To Your Witcher' is quite ok and funny but it's not within the orignal climate of the witcher world;
10. Strongest role is Yennefer - but she couldn't compete with the Yen in Witcher 3 video game - it was not a fair competition;
11. Cahill as the Witcher is trying hard - thank you for that;
12. Don't really like Cavill's voice as the witcher, sounds like the Bale's voice in Batman. Sometimes it sounds funny (I watched with original english audio);
13. No Slavonic climate of the original Witcher series;
14. Soundtrack in Witcher 3 videogame was 100x times better;
15. Don't really like the monsters really. Even the dragons... CGI B Class;
16. The armors of 'black and gold' are like black sacks...
Thank you that you've tried, please do more in the future and try harder. Read the books, play the game Witcher 3 to understand it more.

Expand
