despite some sjw injections and some characters being swapped and some changes to the story which are not needed (magic eels as magic conduits, etc) this can be a great show.

Are you serious?) and abolutely unnecessary modern tolerance and SJW-themes IN A DARK PHANTASY WORLD. The biggest problem of the series - instead of taking the best parts of the original books and videogames, creators took worst of them. Most of the time you watch something that should be called not "THE WITCHER", but "Yen the Sorcerer, the Kings, and, well, there is also witcher-guy somewhere, but you shouldn't care too much". And it is boring as hell to watch, even when you're trying to forget about the original. It was a problem of some of the books too, but at least not the first THREE of them, which were full of great stories about ACTUAL GERALT. And what happened to the normal step-by-step story, what the horrible mess it is? Is it scenario or the Montage-guy just mixed scenes randomly? There is some good moments, but i guess 5th episode became final to me, at least for now. If the books and the games were anything like this series - I'm pretty sure, the franchise would never have become so popular. Expand

Shallow, cutting corners, acting sometimes lacking. Comes nowhere near the game (and I suspect the books as well) in terms of character development, story telling and describing the intricate universe the story is set in.

On the positive side, the cinematography and lighting is great, as is much of the combat. The acting has its moments. Beyond that, its pretty negative for me: the costumes are terrible and look cheap (nilfgaard armour looks terrible and Geralt’s trousers look like cheap nylon or somethning), they seemed to switch directors part way through and the inconsistency shows (the directors are inexperienced too, why one would give a an IP with a big fanbase like this to an inexperienced director is beyond me), but worst of all is the story: at times it strays quite far from the books (arrogant writers couldn’t leave it alone perhaps?) and not in a good way. It also jumps back and forward in time, telling different stories out of order in a way that’s pretty confusing,
If you haven’t read the books, the show does a bad job of introducing the world, but if you have, it does a bad job of staying true to the books. I’m really not sure who the target audience are meant to be.

This show is incredible. I don't really care what the critics think. This is coming from a group of 5 of us that binged watched it together in one sitting, with only 2 out of the 5 being familiar with the Witcher games and lore.

Henry Cavill nailed it as Geralt and I thought that the rest of the cast did a fantastic job at portraying their characters. Anya Chalotra was especially great as Yennefer. The only gripes that I have with the casting is that I believe Mimi Ndiweni was miscast as Fringilla, solely based on the fact that she reminded Geralt so much of Yennefer in the books he accidentally refers to her as Yennefer during a sexual encounter. I also think that they should have given Anna Shaffer red or auburn hair to match her character as Triss, I think most people were pretty upset about the fact that these characters looked nothing like they were described in the book or video games.

Otherwise I thought that The Witcher series is an absolutely incredibly fantasy show that really does fans of the books and games justice.

And for everyone that is complaining about the timeline pacing, my fiance that doesn't have any experience whatsoever with the Witcher was easily able to immediately decipher that we had jumped back in time from the first moment of it, without me having to fill her in on anything.

Also, for everyone complaining that they can't follow the timeline pacing.. I feel that's absolutely ridiculous. My fiance was able to follow the narrative just fine and didn't have any issues with figuring out the timeline and she has no experience with any witcher lore and it was completely without me filling her in on anything.

If you are a fan previous to watching the Netflix series I'd give it a solid 8. It is a slow burn to start but mostly lives up to expectations set forth by the books and games. Spends a bit too much time setting up the story, plot and characters, if you are unfamiliar it will be very overwhelming what is happening, who is who and where the current on screen story is taking place due to erratic time skips. Some casting choices are a bit on the safe side but overall Herny Cavill, Freaya Allan and Anya Chalotra are great castings for Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer. Only the casting of Triss Merigold is a bit of a head scratcher, while she doesn't play a huge part yet in the series she will judging by the Books and Game. Triss being such a big name in the Witcher universe it was weird not having her play a bigger role in the story.

Overall I'd recommend anyone to watch until the third episode to give it a real shot, has decent fights, true to lore monsters, politics, nudity and overall good acting. Only major downfall of the first season was the slow burn, plodding story for the first few episodes and 1 or 2 uhhhh okay at best CGI moments but nothing thats a show killer. More budget and time and this could be a great show for years to come. Oh and don't let the "critics" reviews give you a bad impression, let those idiots go back to drooling over a meh at best Star Wars Rise of Skywalker and a terrible end to Game of Thrones that they seemed to love. I think they watched completely different things than we did.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright I just finished watching season 1 of the Witcher and wanted to post my take on it. Full disclosure, I never read the books and have only played Witcher 3.

Before I started watching I read that the show was supposed to be based more on the books rather than games. But after watching this whole season its made me definitely not want to read the book, were they really that bad or did Netflix just do a poor job at adapting them for TV?

Theres just so many of your typical TV tropes/cliches. Characters hiding behind a rock and over hearing exposition when they would easily be spotted. Characters saying they won't do something then only moments later are doing that thing (Dara saying he won't drink the water, then smash cut to him drinking the water). They did the the tired old trope of showing the end in the beginning. Instead of building up to the battle they just showed it right up front, then when the battle finally happened there no was tension/emotional impact or anything because they already spoiled it all in the beginning.

Too many times throughout the season was the old trope of a character being on his back with his weapon just out of hands reach, then after a few cutaways he grabs the weapon and wins the fight. Every time there was an extremely time sensitive moment, the characters had to take time to say their extremely long goodbyes, or protest having to leave, somehow on a battlefield with people dying left and right the queen had time to kneel down and cry over the death of someone without someone chopping her down right at that moment.

The love between between Yenn and Istredd left me confused, because one moment they were just talking and the next scene they were madly in love? Their relationship felt super rushed.

Jaskier was just annoying comic relief and wasn't even funny comic relief. I just wanted to see Geralt be a bad ass and do bad ass things but every time anything happened Jaskier would fumble in and say some stupid stuff instead of letting the scene/show be about Geralt. Like when Geralt found the Djinn, Jaskier just starts making random wishes. I thought Geralt finding a djinn would be an interesting storyline but instead Jaskier just ruined it all and started wishing for random nonsense. And you can say "well thats just his character!" Well I don't care ,its stupid and makes for stupid TV.

There wasn't enough Geralt, it seemed like each episode was 90% boring dialog with Yenn/Cintra people/everyone else then and 10% Geralt, and almost no monster hunting at all.

The time jumping was confusing and served no purpose but to annoy me personally.

Why was that dude a dragon btw?

A lot of the effects were bad, Actually most of the effects were bad. I was wondering how they would pull off a show with all these cool monsters and make it look good, They didn't. One moment that stuck out to me that was just an obvious cost cutting measure was when Duny Transitioned back into a human, there was no slow transition from monster to human, they simply just cut away to crowd reactions, then cut back and he was human.

Skellige seemed especially worthless this season.

In most sex scenes the actors were fully clothed. There was a scene that particularly stood out in episode 6 where Geralt was boinking Yenn when they were both fully dressed.

Nilfgaard armor.....

What was up with that season finale where there was a giant battle being waged between dueling mages, Meanwhile Geralt fights a couple of ghouls and is out of commission the whole episode.

No Gwent?!

The controversial part. I'm all for diversity but lets not cast black people just for the sake of casting black people. There was no reason to cast an African American as Triss of all people, her look is iconic, she is supposed to be instantly recognizable by her look. If they didn't mention her name in the show I never would have know that was supposed to be Triss Merigold.

In closing, the show isn't a 10/10 like a lot of the fan boys are rating it, but it also isn't a 0/10 like some haters are rating it. I believe the Witcher on Netflix falls somewhere in the middle. Its a watchable show, with deep lore, but not enough time is spent explaining the lore,or explaining in it cohesive manner. Unfortunately The Witcher isn't going to be a replacement Game Of Thrones fans, That void will remain unfilled for now, but at least we still got 6 seasons of GoT, while the Witcher will be lucky to get half that. Hopefully improvements are made, and the second season will address all the legitimate complaints fans and critics have been talking about.

Let's get something out of the way right away: I never watched Game of Thrones, so there is no comparison from my side.

This show just didn't capture me. I wanted to like it so bad, Mr Cavill is one of my favorite actors, but unfortunately this show will not go down as a highlight of his career. I appreciate his enthusiasm for the character and the video game, he brought Geralt to the screen in a very good an authentic way. But it just didn't work for me. Nevertheless, he is the only positive thing that I can think of about this show.

I don't know what's the production budget, but so many times the entire thing felt like a B-category, cheap production. Poorly written dialogues, not so great acting from the rest of the cast (I didn't care for any of the characters) and casting choices. The CGI was okay overall the sword fight scenes were great. The editing of the plot progress timelines was confusing sometimes, made me wonder what the heck is going on, unfortunately not in a good way.

I'm not sure if I give the second season a chance after this.

The Witcher is an adaptation of eight books and three video games, released by CD Project Red. I have not read the books, but I have played all three video games. I watched this with my wife, who has no experience with the universe.

I was worried about the adaptation for Netflix and in particular, Henry Cavill as Geralt of Riva. Geralt is an older character, and I was worried about how this would play out on the television. My worries were misplaced, as Henry portrays Geralt as close to the source materials that could be achieved in an adaptation from hundreds of hours of video games and books into television. It is clear that Henry is a fan of the source material and this shows through his entire performance, even down to the voice.

I didn’t buy into Anya Cholatra’s portray of Yennefer for most of the series but later on, it became more accurate to the source material; particularly in the final episode. Overall, Anya appears to be a very talented actress and I look forward to seeing her rise in prominence. I want to see her ‘own’ this character in the way Cavill has already taken ownership of Geralt.

Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold is difficult to judge in this series, as she is very much a side character with little dialogue (mostly exposition outside of a single episode). Her wardrobe is out of place with the character we have grown to love in the video games; with the red hair that has become synonymous with Triss being absent. This is a character that will hopefully be developed in the future. The sorceresses are vain, and they use magic to heighten their physical appearance; they are cunning, long term strategists and committed to spreading their influence throughout the world. They use their positions at Court to gain influence and further their own goals. We need to see more of this.

Freya Allan as a young Ciri provided a competent portray, although again lacking substantial dialogue throughout the series. We know the character is special but the moving timeline in the episodes again made this character underexplored. This series is very much about Geralt and Yennefer and their rise in prominence and renown in the world. Joey Batey as Dandelion is the stand out character in the series and the closet to portray to the character from the subject materials. “Toss a coin to your Witcher” is the standout track from the series and fits the character perfectly. He portrays Dandelion with the cheek and playfulness that the subject material gives him. He provides the comedic relief in what is a bleak world and if Joey’s portray had been less sincere, it would have had a substantially detrimental impact on the series.

The world of The Witcher is captured accurately in this series; the grimy, dirty, middle ages atmosphere is abundant through the entire series. Several episodes were easy to get lost in, with the timeline moving backwards and forwards without clearly informing the viewer that this is happening. We had several “, but she died..” moments before realising what was going on. It was the main cinematography misstep in the series; I don’t see how the series would have been negatively impacted by portraying the series in its correct timeline.

The fight scenes are well-choreographed and provide enough gore and violence in short, sharp, points not to overindulge. The sex scenes will disappoint fans of the Witcher 2 but they are enough to move the storey forward; the relationship between Geralt and Yennefer builds as they begin to adore each other. The characters are mostly undeveloped and the finale of the season was left somewhat on a cliff hanger. This season needed a more in-depth initial examination of the characters at (perhaps) the loss of the storey to set the scene for new viewers, rather than leaning on fan service to bring in the converted. The converted were always going to be here for this after being starved of Witcher content since 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. A longer season of say 12 episodes could have better developed these areas; we don’t even get a substantial explanation of what a Witcher is and how they are created! Overall we had a positive experience with this series, it hits most of the right notes but falls short of being a stand out season – it has all the hallmarks of an opening season with producers who are not entirely confident on how well it will be received. We are looking forward to the second season, which has already been greenlit. This is a solid 8/10 and worthy of a second season but this will need to do much more to bring in new audiences into this world and make this a long term Netflix hit that it has the potential to do. I hope they put caution aside and allow the writer to bring these characters to life in the second season.

Expand

Cavill is great as Geralt and casting in general is well done. The Witcher is a true high fantasy setting which is a tough genre to pull off in film but Hissrich did a great job. The special effects are great for a first season (hopefully they improve as the show goes on) and the sword choreography is excellent (it puts GoT to shame in that area).

The show may be hard to follow for those new to the universe of The Witcher especially since it is told over multiple timelines that are not necessarily in order. Maybe read a short primer on the universe or the characters if this is the case, it is totally worth it. This is one of my few complaints about the season; it doesn’t always do the greatest job of telling you the timeline that is being depicted.

There is a shortage of true high fantasy setting shows of good quality so if you are a fan of the genre then definitely support this. For whatever it is worth Netflix earned a paid subscription from me for this show and for Stranger Things.

And less one point for the terrible casting of Triss Merigold, who is a fiery red head, with delicate sharp features and milk white skin, not a plain Jane brown haired girl..

But as a fan of the Game ,but not so much the books I really didnt think Netflix's : "The Witcher" would appeal to me at all. Then you Meet Henry Cavil as Geralt and he is perect in the role, then Anya Chalotra as Yennifer who just nails the Sorceress and Finally Joey Batey as Dandelion and the show simply revolves perfectly around them.. While there is definently some harder to watch performances these 3 along with Renly in the begining and it easy to overlook the flaws.
Another thing they have done well in implement the world and its law in a way that isnt overwhelming. It has been dumbed down some what but you cant blame the shows creators for that, given the low intelligence of critics these days.
Its an amazing ride so far, full of cool and funny moments, and Season one has definitely set the ground work for a tale spaning years.

A atuação é boa e a trilha sonora é realmente boa.

Everything's been pretty much said. The bottom line is: they should NOT have hired Lauren Hissrich to make this series.

The messy plot and silly dialogue would be tolerable but Lauren Hissrich adds insult to injury with the awful, atrocious CASTING. As an avid fan of the books and games I couldn't get immersed because Triss especially, but also Yen, as well as Calanthe, Vilgefortz... were so badly cast its obvious Lauren Hissrich was no big fan of the Witcher and whoever makes hiring decisions at Netflix again has no clue whatsoever about what made Witcher intriguing and fascinating for true fans. The entire premise of the Witcher is dark, gritty and anti-SJW so to force SJW themes and casting into the show is so glaring and damaging to the soul of this franchise, its antithetical to everything the Witcher has ever stood for, like slapping us heavily in the face and shoving 1-sided Leftist politics down our throats as if we're watching CNN and not the Witcher.

Shame on you, Lauren. Get your filthy hands and your CLUELESS ideas off my precious franchise.

Henry Cavill does an excellent job portraying Geralt of Rivia. Why a 6/10 then? Only because of the extremely jarring and forced inclusion of Black individuals in what is essentially medieval Eastern Europe. Every scene they appear in, the immersion is utterly broken and they stand out like sore thumbs. Really, a "brother" in a group of Slavic cutthroats, dressed in a European Serf outfit?

This is a clear example of the mind poison of English progressivism/inclusiveness ideology bringing down an otherwise great show for absolutely no good reason.

I really enjoyed this Netflix Witcher series
I understand why it doesn't attract new fans as I think The Witcher show needed one exposition scene in the beginning in order to explain where's what/who/world. People who have not read the books or played at least 1 game will be terribly confused. But those who are familiar with the Witcher world will probably dig this series quite lot.
Season 1 is a prelude, settings things up for the future. That's what I liked most. Henry Cavil played the young version of Geralt spectacularly and the other characters did pretty well too. I'm hyped, pumped and excited to get to the griddy meaty part of the story in future seasons.

Its watchable. But not that great.
The virtue signalling undertone is very present and destroys this fantasy with politics from the real world. Thats that. But even if you ignore that, the casting and actors arent that great either, mostly very bad actually. The actors playing Yennefer and Geralt are the best, yet they cant really save this series from mediocrity, and even if they are good actors, they were still badly cast. Geralt simply doesnt look like He-Man, like this actor does.

The writing is bad, too. You feel as if youre dropped into a hot pot of stuff you have to know but dont know. Especially if youre not great with names this will confuse you a lot at the start.

You never get a feeling of epicness like in the games or books. It feels childish and cheap, best comparable to Hercules or Xena. Even though it uses a lot of nudity and gore. They think (judging from the sad music) that you feel for this or that character, that this or that character dies, yet you dont feel anything for them, because the series never establishes their character well and makes the dialogues very weird and awkward, unnatural. Its worse than on The Walking Dead. The story feels extremely rushed, as if they try to explain the whole Witcher universe in just a few hours. Maybe it should have had 24 episodes instead of just 8. But I guess thats just signs of the time. Characters and their personalities arent important anymore, because we live in a very anti-social time because people are mostly sitting at home, not having much social interaction anymore - and thats me saying, who isnt really the biggest social interactive person either.

The jokes are unfunny, mostly because you cant really build up a relationship to the characters because of the reasons I already mentioned.

People comparing this to Game of Thrones have obviously never watched Game of Thrones. I cried like a baby many times when people died in GoT or something bad happened to them. Here I dont even flinch.
Its like comparing a Lada to a Maybach.
I get that some people are starved for a fantasy series after the end of GoT, but this is in no way a substitute.

Oh yeah, and the excessive use of colored contact lenses (sometimes they wear them, sometimes they dont) also add to the childishness of this series. It looks completely unbelievable. Directors should know that in the age of 4K resolution.

They've made it clear over the past several years that they are Leftflix.

The first episode is poor. I mean bordering on garbage. I almost didn't push past it, but I am glad I did. The rest of the series, while frequently riveting with some fun timey-whimey twist, suffers from poor direction and an obvious willingness to accept on set ad-libing. Dialog can feel pitch perfect for its genre and then someone will drop a line that sounds modern and ridiculous pulling you out of whatever immersion you might have had.
Once things start to pull together and get really good, the season ends.

There is much that is good but also much that is bad about The Witcher. In more capable hands this could have been a must watch series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall I think the show is good but to say it's great or above a 7 (as someone who's only played 2 and 3 of the games and read one of the books) would be disingenuous, it has some rather glaring flaws that should be rectified in the second season.

SPOILERS BELOW: The show is following the story of the books. Season 1 is based on the first two books which are a set of short stories. I'll give my props to the writers for managing to make it somewhat coherent however the changing between timelines is just confusing and unless you're paying full attention you will end up feeling very confused as the show goes on. That is in my opinion the biggest flaw.

The casting isn't amazing but works, standout actors being Henry Cavill as Geralt and Joey Batey as Jaskier (Dandelion). They played their roles phenomenally and the chemistry between them makes in my opinion the best moments within the whole of the series. Yennefer's actress, Anya Charlotta, grew in me as the show went on and I'd say she did a good job. However the actress playing Triss, Anna Shaffer, just didn't feel right as Triss is meant to be youthful, childish and like a big sister and I just didn't get that from her. I hope she improves next season. The rest of the cast were good and I don't feel like there were any other stand out performances.

Should you watch it, I'd say yes but DO NOT expect the next game of thrones or you will be sorely disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A Coin To Your Witcher Expand

This is amateurish fan fiction that barely reaches quality of Xena: The Warrior Princess. Compared with the books, everything is dumbed down and thrown out of order. Characters vastly differ in looks and behaviour from their source material counterparts. Whereas Sapkowski (and the games) excelled at creating morally interesting dilemmas, the show delivers primitive black & white good vs evil tropes.

Netflix went waaaay overboard with their diversity quotas, PC agenda and trying to reach a bigger audience and in doing so they effectively butchered everything that made Witcher franchise unique, leaving the viewers with this unappealing bland carcass. Compliments to H. Cavill, he did his damn best.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I first discovered the mysterious world of Witcher with the books and the games I was utterly mesmerized and wanted to discover the gorgeous world with interesting characters and their backstories. The TV show had not given me any feeling of intrigue whatsoever with bland acting and inaccurate lore. There are several things to mention here about the cast and lore. First off, Cirilla. Ciri was the daughter of The Emperor of Nilfgaard, Emhyr Var Emreis and not some heir to the Cintran throne in which the court decided to poison themselves instead of protecting their dignity and fighting to death.
Speaking of Nilgaard, the armored look cheap and lazy unlike the games where it was majestic and magnificent. Lastly, the actors/actresses. Triss was described as a beautiful sorceress with red hair with the capability of utilizing fire. What we got in the TV show was nothing similar to that. Instead we are presented with an actress that does not have any of those features. The only reason I am even eating this 1 is because of Geralts character. Glad the script writers didnt depict him as a Gun Gan.
