I was introduced to this world because of those amazing games more than a decade ago (still haven't played Witcher 3 yet, though, a mortal sin I know) and with the release of Season 2 coming up, I decided to finally give Season 1 a watch, especially since I started reading the books and finished The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny beforehand considering this season is mostly based on those two books. What I loved: Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. He was perfect. He had the feel and style of Geralt nailed down and since he is a fan of the games, he emulated the voice from them and it was awesome. He gave a great performance as the famous witcher. He looked the part too albeit a bit beefier version. Also, some of his fight scenes were brutally thrilling and well-choreographed. The song "Toss a Coin to your Witcher" from Jaskier/Dandelion was an absolute banger and Dan Vasc's Metal cover of it is even better. Still can't get it out of my head. What I liked: Joey Batey as Jaskier/Dandelion (I wish they called him dandelion in the series), he was a fun companion to The White Wolf and I enjoyed their interactions and his injection of comedy alongside Geralt's dry wit. Would have liked it more if the writing gave him more smarts alongside the comic relief aspect as it is in the books but who knows, maybe in the next season. Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, might not look the part that well but I sure did enjoy her performance, she had some intense moments in this season and she brought out her acting chops. Freya Allen as Ciri wasn't bad either and whatever shortcomings I felt had more to do with the writing and not the actress. Seeing some of the locations such as Cintra, some monsters such as The Kikimora and Striga, and some magic with good production values was entertaining. Also, some events which weren't elaborated on in the book being shown in the series was cool. The soundtrack was good and clearly had influence from the games although not at that level. What I didn't like/Hated: The way the story was structured, I wasn't a fan of it for a lot of it. Instead of taking their time with Geralt's short stories they were adapting from the books and introducing the viewer to the world and giving them proper breathing room by focusing earlier episodes on each story, they half-assed it in order to cram in other characters and plot elements that ran concurrently alongside the witcher stories in pretty much every episode and because of that, so much was cut or altered, some downright butchered (Sword of Destiny, for one). Also, some decisions made with the out-of-order timeline felt extremely misplaced basically giving you a spoiler first and then building up to it and I wasn't a fan of it.
The visuals were very inconsistent. Some episodes clearly had more budget than others. Elements such as the Brookilon Forest and Dryads or the dragon from the story The Bounds of Reason looked downright bad (and the adaptation of these stories equally sucked). Overall, I enjoyed it for some of the elements I mentioned above but I was certainly hoping for better adaptations of the stories, which is something I wish they'd remedy in Season 2. Now, would I have enjoyed this more if I had not read the books? Perhaps, but I can never know that for sure, I guess one gives up that factor when one has experienced the source first. Anyway, if you haven't watched it yet, I'd still recommend giving it a try regardless of whether you have played the games or read the books or are completely new to this fantasy world. If Netflix doesn't screw it up in the subsequent seasons, this could have the potential to be as big of a hit as Game of Thrones and the books are finished so there's that edge as well. And if I were to rate the first season, I'd give it a 6.5/10.

They've just worked on costumes and visual effects, and just that . The story is so boring (just watched until the 4th episode),there's no action or magical stuff in the 3 first episodes.

Complete disagreement with the canon. The series is sh*t of sh*t, I could barely watch the first two episodes. Read books, play at least one game from this universe and you will understand what I mean.

This is awful show with bad writing, bad casting, bad directing and low-budget effects. They just butchered this show.
1. They took one and only example of good eastern European fantasy and replace characters with people of other races. And book was based on the eastern European myths and legends! So it plain disrespect to the culture if you change race of almost every character. 2. Bad casting. Sorceresses was beatiful in book because of glamur and in show they are not. And in case of Triss -she just looks old. But it is matter of taste and opinions here may differ. But actual midgets given role of dwarfs? It is just pitifully absurd. It seems they can't even lift an axe. 3. Bad directing. Episodes are mish-mash of short scenes and they ends so abdruptly that you just feel disengaged. All in all in my opinion only Cavill is ok in this show even if he is too pumped up for this role. At least he is not too far away from character. So 1 point for Cavill is best it can have. All other things are bad. Maybe except catchy song.

The worst adaptation I could imagine. Sapkowski in one of his interviews admitted, that his dream is to get an adaptation like Games of Thorne. For sure not this “show”. This is a disgrace to every books fans. Shame on people which did it.

Expand

So I really liked certain things about this show (enough to keep me interested in S2) but there are A LOT of stuff that is just . . . badly done. I feel this would be easiest to sum up in a list, so. . .

1. Cavill as Geralt is some of the best casting I've seen. He delivers his lines perfectly and his choreography is A+. I've never seen sword fighting like his except for in the games themselves.
2. The world is rich and deep with lore, characters, backstory and plenty of stuff to scratch that curiosity itch. I spent quite some time digging up stuff in the wiki about the show.
3. Special effects are top notch. The creatures look fantastic, have weight, impact. They've done their homework on the original content and it shows.

And now the things I dislike, which there are plenty. The 1st one being the biggest. I understand it is like that in the games but it's just a byproduct of poor writing.

1. FAR TOO MUCH SEX. I am far from a prude but my god the amount of sex is so overly abundant it becomes rote. There was an article in which the writers said the reason why there's so many is because it's a 'quick way to demonstrate their bond and why Geralt would chase after X___'. This is a piss poor reason. There could be thousands of reasons as to why Geralt would chase after someone that has nothing to do with sex but because of the lack of imagination, they just go with the basics. Geralt would be a much more interesting character if he wasn't thinking with his dick constantly.

2. The romance subplots are cringy. Most of them don't last very long and they're obviously just **** to get it out of their system which once again begs the question: why show all of them? Just get to the plot. Stop wasting 20% of the movie with dick and vag shots.

3. The entire scenario is incredibly boring and rather confusing to someone who isn't already steeped in the lore and the world. I had to use the wiki several times to figure out what was going on before I realized that there was MANY time skips.

4, Not nearly enough fight scenes. Normally I dislike them as they offer nothing to the story but the fantastic choreography really needed more time to shine.

5. Last and definitely least as it's minor, but do we really have to constantly get gorgeous women and ugly them to go in the opposite direction? Really frustrating to see this constantly. Know this is really just me and not a big contestation but figured I'd mention it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Lauren S. Hissrich wrote the script just for a sake of promoting feminism and diversity. Every good aspect of the series of books was misconstructed, changed to fit the main narrative. Characters are caricatures of them self. Many aspects of original stories are skipped while whole other stories are created. Character traits are changed, dialogs poorly written frequently change situation, pushing feminist agenda in to viewers throat. Almost whole story of Yennefer was created for a sake of strong female lead. It's weird feeling that tv series about witcher is mainly about Yennefer and Cirila with few quick-cut scenes showing cuts of Gerald. Calente is another example of character that's over the top (clearly miss cast). Her behavior is borderline (aura of being drugged). Humor in books is subtle while in the series jokes are delivered Deadpool style. Tissaia de Vries played by MyAnna Buring is bright light in this series. Great cast and her character fits the books.

Many people write that Henry C. is made for the role. In my opinion he does not understand character and performs badly. His claim that he is a fan of the series and that he read the whole series and then goes to say that Geralt is a white knight is bit outlandish. Simple lie for a sake of the interview in my opinion. Other thing he said that points in to direction of him not knowing much is his claim that Geralt was witcher 2.0 (mutations were more advanced in his case). He acts in the same manner as he was in superman. Great savior just with bits of brutish bravado and some bitterness. Books painted medieval Europe with fantasy aspects, with slav accents here and there. While Lauren goes in to modern UK or US to showcase the world and society. Diverse cast is forced in every scene in every episode. For some reason diversity not include Asian people, apparently not diverse enough. Hissrich is a type of person who would cast Hercules and Achilles black people just for sake of diversity. Elfs are showcased as humans but being persecuted for being different. In books there were proud and feel superior to humans.

Dwarfs in books were brilliant full of vigor and brutish manners. Huge part of original vibrant world. In series, they are without and good values. Casting was done like: here are random little people chose 5 lets look for more people of color to fit the narrative.

Scenography is poor, scenes are closed, world is static, special effects are mediocre at best. Possibly the lacking of cash for production. Frames are very narrow. Factions and leaders is another story that was changed dramatically. Foltest is shown as weak, brutish person. Not as a serious king with proper leadership skills. Geralt is more concerned about miners and theirs plan to bring people revolution in to Temeria (workers revolution). Nilfgards army is shown as band of barbarians murdering humans, dogs, torturing everything in their way. You could compare them to horde of orcs from Tolkien. While they were empire with strong army. Cintra in other hand is shown as strongest Kingdom with again is not really the case. To summarize: Lauren S. Hissrich butchered the story. Created her own narrative. Changed characters to fit their view how the world should look. Whole production is a mess. Every jump from character to character is happening in different time. People who did not read books can easily lose them self's and people who did read a book are confused with timelines and stories being changed to the brink of recognition. Witcher was Netflix response to GOT but they are far, far away from meting the standards set by producers of HBO series. Political activism killed this series. But apparently, netflix likes to burn money.

Expand

9 out of 10 - because there is always something to improve or change ...
As a fan of the series, I am 99% satisfied. I watched season 1 already 8 times and did not even think to change my rating for the worse. It's a terrific show and hope, after the horrific Game of Thrones finale. The only problem with The Witcher series is very little, despite the lengthy 8 episodes. The Witcher universe is too big and the story is very complex, so I understand the indignation of many fans who wanted to see a lot, but because of the cinema, it is impossible to show and tell everything. Nevertheless, season 1 showed a decent backstory and allowed those who were not familiar with the story to get acquainted with it. Great start of the series !!!
What we liked:
1) The cast. It seemed to me quite acceptable. All actors are well accepted in the role of certain characters, but this does not mean that the casting is perfect. There is work to do!
2) Acting in some cases, I was simply amazed at how well the actors convey the images of the main characters. Personally, I felt a strong resemblance to Geralt of Rivia as Henry Cavill, Yennefer as Anya Chalotra and Jaskier as Joey Batey - they are just great and well conveyed the emotions and characters of the characters. The rest of the actors were also pretty good to one degree or another, but it was season 1, so it's too early to criticize.
3) Narration. Even if it seemed confusing, but quite logically it revealed the beginning of the story without focusing on the main thing in order to make it possible to understand.
4) The series is filmed very well. Each episode is pleasant to watch, the scenery is pleasing to the eye, it is interesting to watch what is happening and there is nothing superfluous.
What did you dislike or embarrass:
1) Gnomes! Didn't the creators of the series watch The Lord of the Rings? The same applies to dragons, which were well, not at all like those images to which we are accustomed. The dragons in the show were more like a breed of dragons.
2) Costumes are weapons! This is an important component, but for some reason they save on it. especially the armor of Geralt in the photo from the filming of season 2 (in season 1, his armor was much better !!!).

Many thanks to all of us who filmed and starred in this wonderful series. I look forward to the sequel and the announcement of the season 2 show date.

like the first book boht yennifers plot was the best how she had to overcome evriting and the ending ended kinda in a clif hanger the last tingh i wil say about the good parts is that this is beased on the books not on the games and I am a big fan of the games so this was a new story to me. THE Bad , there isnt a lot of bad tings bouth there is a litel ciri story was the most predictybal and some of the locations didn t look that fantesy .

Keep in mind, I have only played and finished the 3rd game and probably missed out on a lot of story, but I have no idea what's going on. Stuff just happens sometimes really fast after one another and some of them don't make sense. Each episode feels like a side quest but stretched out to be an hour long. This leaves me confused, not mad or disappointed just... confused

I'll give it a 4 for some nice action scenes and good looking visual effects. Other than that, it really hasn't much going for it.

Appeals to a broader audience by sacrificing the wit, charm and unique flair of the original. This is barely recognizable as the Witcher. If it weren't for Geralt's white hair and wolf medallion, you'd be hard-pressed to identify it as little more than a cheap fantasy, trying to cash in on the empty slot left behind by Game of Thrones.

In reality, I'd give it more of a 4/10 or 5/10, the 0/10 is simply to offset the mindless drones hyping this up because they have no clue or understanding what quality is.

"The Witcher" is a standalone TV show, and it doesn't matter if it is an accurate transposition of the original novels or the videogames. Despite that, "mixed feelings" is the best way I could describe it.
The overall atmosphere and characters are fine, but it felt that storytelling was a bit too week, even for this kind of show. First of all, the lore from the books is never explained despite being far from obvious, leaving most viewers disoriented. Names and locations are also kind of hard to remember, and the show really does nothing to help us in that sense. They just go on with everything assuming we all took the necessary history classes. I played the videgames some years ago but still couldn't figure out a lot of the dynamics. The three main storylines are supposed to intertwine, but are not temporally parallel. Ciri has to find Geralt, but the other characters just travel aimlessly. Fights are well choreographed but also mixed with cheap CGI. A lot of the talking is boring, but the humor reminded me of "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys". Maybe the budget was not sufficient to make something better than this, but I hope the success the series got will help it pay for better writers and CGI artists at least. It's not terrible but if the plan was to make the new "Game of Thrones", then there is still a lot of work to do.

Expand

The Witcher series has more potential. Season 1 was nice but was little bit fast paced.

First of, Henry Cavill as Geralt is the best part of this show. No doubt about that. The show is worth watching just for his portrayal. He really cares about the character. The fight Choreography is nice. Moments between Jaskier and Geralt were also nice. There were some bad casting choices like Triss, Foltest and the Driads.

All in all its worth the watch if you're a fan of the Witcher games/books. I can't praise Henry enough for his performance though. Seriously.

However despite this the show is an absolute mess in terms of story and direction, it’s hard to imagine just what was going on in the show runners heads with the plan for this series. The series opts for a story that is constantly jumping between timelines and characters, telling one story of Ciriilla. One of yennefer and ofcourse the Witcher himself who is often written out of his own story! With emphasis placed on yennefer and ciri’s journey being dragged out throughout the whole show, these moments were utterly dull and so out of pace with the other action packed moments of geralt as rare as they were! Rather than tell a cohesive story of geralt episode by episode showing us his journey and introduce us to important characters naturally the show would rather skip back and fourth in time in order shove important moments and people down your throat in an absolute mess of a 1st series. I am unsure of the budget for the Witcher but it is quite clear it was mostly dispensed in the effects and cinematography of the show with little care or attention going on the props and outfits, characters often look ridiculous and clothing and armour seem as though it could fall off at any minute, not to mention it looks cheap and unpractical, even the Witcher’s outfit looks as if it were stolen from a primary school drama class room. Overall I have to give credit for Cavills performance despite him not being given nearly enough screen time for a show that’s supposedly his...and also credit for the fighting choreography and effects which are spectacular in the first episode. These things make the show watchable at times but the story and direction in which they chose to tell it are unforgivable. The witcher could have been so more it feels like a massively missed oppertunity. Expand

The cast itself was very good. Henry Cavill (Geralt), Anya Chalotra (Yennefer) and Freya Allan (Ciri) all did a great job in my opinion. And the action was also very good, the fight scene at the end of the first episode and the last episode in gerenal were both fantastic (action wise). However he negative of this series is the story. I had to look at multiple explanations online as it is pretty confusing and jumps around timewise. I think the fact that the episodes aren't in chronologial order does a disservice and once I properly understood the story it all seemed better, but viewers shouldn't need to look at recaps onlin, the sries should make it clear. Now as I said, I did enjoy the series as a whole and I'm looking forward to season 2, but I really hope they improve on the story and make it more logical because this series has potentiall and it would be a shame it it didn't live up to it Expand

Also the world building seems at time a bit empty. But at times it hits the right atmosphere and gives me hope for what it can become. I also loved the focus on Yennifer and Ciri and showing the core three in different periods.

Cons:
The show does overlook some key parts from the books.
They could of done better casting wise.
The story line can be hard to follow for some people. mainly the fact that the show takes part in different time peroids.

Henry Cavill is fun to watch but literally everything else is so bad its not even funny. Shame but hey what do you expect from a netflix show based on a game based on a book.

The only thing to complain about is, that it's full of racism. As a slavic, who is deeply connected with the slavic culture, it hurts to see that slavic people are played by colored and western actors. It's also not how the source portraits it. So to not be racist against the slavic culture, the actors should be swaped with actual slavic actors. It hurts to see my culture butchered like that by a western company. (I hope the ones reading that understand that you should not take that review very serious. I just wanted to show how the SJW sound. Pathetic. As a slavic, I don't feel offended by black people playing slavic characters because I'm not a looser of life.) Expand

Great show. Henry Cavill does great justice to the character of Geralt. Things move at a quick pace and if you're not careful you'll miss crucial details.

Changing races or looks of characters is a big no no, you have no idea who they are or why you should care for them. The story is all over the place, you have no idea what they are doing or why... and theres random flashbacks that don't give you a warning beforehand nor is there any time warnings like "5 minutes earlier" "5 minutes later" or similiar, would help alot to understand wtf is going on. I played all the games, this show was a massive failure and boring as hell. Shame really, Witcher got a really awesome story and lore, but they fked it up. Expand

Expand

Well, i have mixed feelings for this but in overall i was amazed and i respect the director because it was loyal to the books!
We were in need of an actor that was a genuine gamer, he played the games, was a fan of them, knew who is Geralt and i am glad that Cavill was the choice. I didn't like some other picks like triss and yen (mostly for the appearance) but yen was not that bad, she did her best i believe. Dantelion was amazing too!
Now for the plot... If you haven't read the books and you haven't played the games then it will be a complete mess because the storyline doesn't play with the right order.
The music was good in overall but i was hoping for the Percival band to make the OST...
Anyways, i am looking forward for the next season, it will be a lot better i believe because now they have a bigger budget.
