I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. This is a great representation of the books. A great series and I am looking forward to following all the coming seasons. The reason i gave it a 9 instead of a 10 is that i would enjoyed it more if it was a bit more gritty. That is just my personal taste. Expand

Watched through it and only things I enjoyed was music and Cavill's acting. Story is all the time all over the place and timeliness keep changing all the time which makes show hard to follow. Show tells you things that you don't do anything and at the same time keeps thing you should know away from you. Shows name is The Witcher but after watching this it should be more called something like Yennefer and others than The Witcher. Now I want my ~8 hours back. Expand

It's a good show, but I think we should wait for other seasons and not judge so soon.
And of course needs to get very much more better.
I personally enjoyed it, and I hope it gets better on future seasons.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Those racists here should really get their head out of their arse.First of all the story plays in a fantasy world. It's not medieval eastern Europe. It's not even remotely like medieval eastern Europe so the idea that everybody should be white is pure racist preconception. Second of all if you are so obsessively preoccupied with the color of people's skin that says more about you than about the series. Seriously, get help.
The series has strong points and weak points.
Strong:The hack & slash scenes are second to none. Brilliant sword play and buckets of blood. The sex scenes could be a bit more explicit.I mean if you are going to do it, do it right like GOT in the beginning.Still i'm glad they didn't sanitize it. And the world is beautifully created, both dark and gritty as well as clean and elegant.
Weak points: It is written for the Witcher die hard fan base. The characters including Geralt himself aren't properly introduced.Presumably because the writers are fans themselves and they know all these characters. I myself have played the first pc game and part of the second. But to me a lot of the characters are rather flat and it's not always clear why they do what they do.The main story line is hard to follow to be honest after one season I'm still not sure where it is all going. And the fact that they don't tell the story chronologically doesn't help.At a certain point you can watch for half an hour and not be quite sure where in the time line they are.And then there is this war and Nilfgaard are the bad guys I suppose. But why what and who they are, I don't know.Actually the only character that is properly introduced is Renfri and she's killed of by Geralt in the first episode. If it had been the other way around the series might have become a lot more interesting.
All in all it is an entertaining show, but they do need to work on their story telling and character development if they want to move from a cult fan show to GOT appeal.I would give it a 6.5. It is not terrible but it needs work.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’d like to start off with saying the show is great, however, it has a slow start until episode 4. Episode 4 is when the series really starts to come together, and the plot only escalates from there. Without spoiling anything, the finale of this show is so satisfying (although it is a cliffhanger) that it made the entire season worth it. Expand

Henry Cavill's Geralt is the only real reason to watch this at all but that's more for the jokes than for his "dramatic performances." I'm pretty sure theHenry Cavill's Geralt is the only real reason to watch this at all but that's more for the jokes than for his "dramatic performances." I've never read the books, so I only have game 3 to go off of (which I loved btw). I'm pretty sure the witcher isn't supposed to be a comedy, but it's hard to take any of the dramatic parts seriously at all and it often falls flat based on how silly the story gets. That isn't to say the intentional humor doesn't land, it does, but the drama doesn't.

Whether the show cut too much out of the books or too little, it's clear that taking more creative license and cutting out the extraneous details the books that weren't needed would have made the story much more easier to follow. I don't have a problem with the nonlinear way the story is told on paper, but there should have been a bigger pay off to it. The way it was done here is just going to leave most people temporarily confused on why people are alive that shouldn't be. That isn't the story's biggest fault though.

The three plot lines that comprise the show are Geralt does Witcher stuff, which is the best because Henry Cavill's charisma alone keeps you interested, Ciri trying to run away from the bad army, which isn't as interesting but does it's job to keep the over arching tension up and set up the end goal, and Yennifer's backstory which is the main reason I hate this show.

I did not care one bit about Yennifer's backstory, and it really should have been cut anyway. All the audience needs to know about her motivation is that she wants a child (something that will come up later I'm sure), but her entire story before that is boring, creepy (in a rapey way, not a scary way), and obnoxious which is funny because that's basically how you could describe her character as well. When she finally does run into Geralt, she more or less becomes a side character anyway.

I guess I'll hit the "diversity question" if only because there's something that bothered me that nobody else has bothered to mention. Either people don't want to touch it at all, or well, "those" people want to complain about black people being elves. Yes this is a fantasy world, and no I don't have a problem with the cast being diverse, but far too often the driving force of the story is ethnically ambiguous girl needs Geralt to solve her problem. For me, the problem isn't race or ethnicity, so much as it's the weird fact that every important woman in the show looks way too much like all the other important women in the show. They wear different costumes but the colors and details are so muted that it doesn't really distinguish them anyway. The weirder part is their hair. Fan boys have probably ranted about the fact that Triss doesn't have red hair, but what set me back is when I realized nearly every important woman in the show has the same hair color, length, and almost the same style. Only the queen in this case is different because she wears her hair in a bun. On top of that, they don't exactly act that differently from each other. Right off the back each one is introduced to Geralt as sassy girl who wants something. If you know the games, you'll notice the minor differences between them (clothes and what they're good at) but they don't really act differently from each other (again, queen lady is sort of the exception that proves the rule). None of the men have this problem. No matter how minor the character, every single man seems to be as distinguishable as he should be. While the black women that follow the dragon hunter around might as well be recast as the women who lived in the woods, the dragon hunter himself looks and acts completely different from Mousesack despite them both being old bearded white men.

I could go on about terrible CGI, spoilers about dumb plot points, and why I think Yennifer is obnoxious, but I feel like a lot of that is more subjective than a wholesale failure in costume design, plot structure and tone. I got to say, the critics finally called one right this time.

If you have a functioning brain the timeline is easy to understand. Not understanding the timeline says more about the person watching than the show itself. There is more then enough information in the form of dialogue, setting, or character ages to figure out where each scene fits into the timeline. I was ready to put this show in the same bin as every other video game adaptation that has ever happened, but it surprised me. It genuinely felt like the Witcher, which was almost unbelievable to me. Who ever directed this did a damn good job at actually making it feel like the games. On top of all that the fighting is bad ass. No stupid ridiculous fight scenes that you see in every other show/movie. These scenes are something else entirely. The one thing that held me up with the time line skipping around. It was hard to follow along at times but its entirely possible I was not paying attention fully. There are also so corny spots like when Yenefer is chanting some weird chant on the bed with her **** out and also some corny dialog here and there. I'm no professional movie/TV show maker but in all I feel this adaptation will be something absolutely great in the future and I genuinely cannot wait until season 2. Expand

It sat as a disaster looming on the horizon and when it finally landed it became a completely different disaster.

Ive read the books, Ive played the games and what you get out of this amounts to a very ham fisted police procedural with Geralt of Rivia tracking down and dealing with the "monster of the week" despite all the episodes dropping at the same time.

The story lacks the depth of the source materials or their much more famous video games. It is the epitome of generic, bland, and uninteresting.

While the casting looked to have been the biggest problem ultimately that is one of the more pleasant surprises. Cavill pulls off a reasonably convincing Geralt. "Jaskier" is a gem to watch. Young Freya does a great job a Princess Cirilla before she evolves to become the Ciri we know. Question is will she be up to the physicality of the role in later seasons IF it gets that far.

That said the most glaring casting issue is without a doubt Anya Chalotra as Yennifer. Now that has absolutely nothing to do with her heritage and nearly everything to do with the reality that she simply cannot act to save her life. Her scenes are tedious to watch and devoid of emoting. She acts like she is Valedictorian of the Kristen Stewart academy for girls who dont act so good.

Beyond that she does not remotely look the part that she is there to portray. Again not because the color of her skin but because as the books put it, Yennifer was supposed to be an unsurpassed beauty and designed physical perfection and Cholatra has all sorts of imperfections, and definitely the wrong physique for the character. Its Gal Gadot for Wonder Woman wrong.

That leads into the next major problem. With her inability to act it drags the whole production down given how much of the story is centered around Yen's exploits. It just keeps getting harder and harder to watch as the show goes on. What makes it worse is that there is absolutely NO chemistry between Cavill and Cholatra. In every possible way, be it emotionally, physically, romantically the coupling is like that of Hugh Jackman and his wife cognitive dissonance that the brain does not want to compute.

Again, none of that would be all that bad if it not for the reality of how much of the plot revolves around their shared sexuality.

As for the controversy, turns out it was mostly inflated. Seemingly stemming mostly from those dissatisfied with the show taking starkly different direction away from the games. In reality most of the choices made were semi logical and more in line with the books. Yet despite that the story builds itself to be more geared towards women than it does men. Namely those women who feasted on the likes of Game of Thrones and Vikings and serves to fill that niche. The comparison to Game Of Thrones was always doomed to be inaccurate. It is much closer to compare it to Vikings with more magic if anything. Much simpler, much more generic, lacking depth and having even less subtlety. I place it somewhere between Vikings and The Last Kingdom and much closer to the latter than the former.

Visually it is well made, at least as it relates to physical landscapes go. The CGI tend to be pretty bad and highly dated. This means that long term the show will NOT hold up well under age.

All in all the show is tolerable. I have sat through far worse things, but not too many. This show is mostly for those who obsess over fandoms and are going to like the show regardless of how "not good" it is OR those who are just watching it as filler material. Mostly while doing anything else and leaving it running as background noise.

Ultimately Season 1 was an utter disappointment. That does not mean that future seasons cannot make the show better. It simply needs more depth in writing and if there were ever a case to be made for recasting a lead, This is a perfect example of where it is needed AND how it could be easily done with the built in "world of magic" excuse that could explain why Yen would change her look again and again. It would not fit with the show runners determination to utilize POCwashing but ideally Yen should have been played by someone such as Katie McGrath who would have at least checked most of the boxes, has experience playing a role as someone who can be endearing one moment then cold and unlikable the next.

All in all the show could have been a solid 7 but on the weakness of Chalotra lack of acting ability in a crucial role, the generic writing and the police procedural more stand alone episodic format that is taking television backwards it can only muster a 3 for the first season. Definitely a foundation to build on, but far from being the most stable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The show may be not perfect in every detail (e.g. Nilfgaard armor, or actress that plays Triss Merrygold), but it is definitely a wonderful recreation of Anrzej Sapkowski's books. Henry Cavill does not play Gwralt - he is Geralt! I can't imagine now anyone, who would be a better actor for that role. Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan make great Yennefer and Ciri as well! Before The Witcher came out, I was afraid that Joey Batey would be a bad Jaskier, but surprisingly he is my second favorite! TL/DR: Show has it's flaws, but it is a must-watch! Expand

If you know the books or the games, you'll feel right in home ( the books, mostly ). Henry Cavil did a really good job, the production value was noticeable, the cast ( few exceptions ), the pace, action choreography, etc, was really well done.

BUT, the timeline for someone who never read the books was really confusing, hell, even for me was a little bit confusing. I'm not asking for linearity, just be more coherent.

Still, one of the best Netflix "originals" to date.

Damn! It is really well made and Henry Cavill surprised me to the point that now I'm a fan !
I love the actors, I love every scene and soundtrack that really made lost myself inside each episode!
I'm really happy how they managed to introduce this wonderful world created by Andrzej Sapkowski, they have played really well the time-lines/events in the show to introduce you from the beginning to this fantastic saga!
Looking forward for the second seasons and for the others! Finally another series that will make history!

This series had so much potential but doesn't do the source material justice and left me wishing it had never happened.

The writing is terrible, most episodes are hasty, unfaithful, screen adaptations of the exiting stories, missing out on character building so that they can spend more time monologuing about destiny.

The pacing is very strange, so much time is devoted to 'side quests' that the main story has to proceed at breakneck pace leaving it feel very shallowly developed and unfocused.

The casting (and acting) of Geralt and Dandelion (changing the name back to Jasker is dumb, the translators made the right call) is actually pretty good, I think Dandelion is probably the best character in the series, and Geralt is played well despite the lines he is being given to work with.

The rest of the cast was absolutely butchered.

Yen comes off as bratty rather than formidable, Yarpen Zigrins over the top aggression leaves you wondering why it's a character you are supposed to like. Ciri has too little screen time too do any development so it seems like she flip flops between helpless and heroine every scene.

Lots of people seem to have issues with characters becoming black but I think this is missing the point. Racism was a big theme in the books / games but the treatment of racism in the series is pathetic. The closest we get to dealing with the topic it is a character making an offhand comment about it. We never actually get shown it.

They would have been better off either sticking more closely to books / games or focusing on characters back story more (the episode with Yennifer as an apprentice was actually good!).

The how is this so highly rated?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. -

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

Very poor writing, very few acceptable acting, too much changes from the original histories. It's more about visual effects than content and even so, it fails sometimes.

As a fan of the games and the books, I can assure I had great time playing and reading, otherwise watching the show, didn't bring any feelings at all. Not funny, not scary, not emotional, not entertainment, not mysterious. It was very few scenes I could enjoy on this first season. Also I really couldn't understand how a fan could like it.

CD Red Projekt also changed histories of the books, but the studio improved it. The TV show changed the essence of history and characters, there isn't one single history told authentically as it's on the books. They followed the main topics of the books only.

My expectations of seeing remarkable scenes of The Witcher history was totally frustrated. I wish they could improve it, but I fear they can't make it better, specially with so many applause.

Expand

Dialogues are **** acting is so so, most actors didnt capture their characters and that includes Henry Cavill, whom I like as an actor. Yes, you can tell he played the games, but i would question he read the books, because he tries to portray the game Geralt with his stoic badassery, but gives no attempt to show off Geralt´s wit and intelligence, which is understandable because like I said, the dialogues are pure garbage. I dont think the writers have the capacity to come up with witty or intelligent lines to begin with, so I dont blame only Cavill for that. However Geralt has never been a character defined primarily by his excellent swordsmanship or his stoic demeanor as the games or the show would have you believe. The show is filled with out of place diversity, men bashing, all the queens and authorities are black or female, its progressive garbage of first order. The audio and visuals are nice for a tv production, netflix has the money if not the talent. Fight scenes are probably the only thing I actually enjoyed. You can tell lot of time and thought have been given to the choreography, but thats where the positives start and end. The show has no regards for the slavic roots of the material and the lore is never implemented in any but the most basic and surface level way. This isnt the witcher, its progressive americanised generic fantasy for politically correct audience that took the names and tropes from the witcher and left the balls out. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When will any streamer, or for that matter any network at all create a show that has fantasy in reality structure and not based on a series of books which cannot ever be plowed into a reasonably watchable scripted series. Such is the case with The Witcher, an uneven oft times annoying treatment of the video game and subsequent books that came before it. A usually loquacious and amiable Henry Cavill is relegated to grunting monosyllabic answers and surly undertones. The storyline is a wandering mishmash of "you're supposed to already know the language and dialogue and dialects of the inhabitants of The Witcher milieu" tropes. I wanted to like the series, but again I was both annoyed and disturbed by the lack of great storytelling this kind of material needs. And lets not forget the Bard who makes his appearance in episode 2, to the dismay of both and Gerald of Rivia and everyone else I have canvassed. Come on Netflix, lets dispense with this adaptation of novels and video games and give some real show runner creators a chance to create something totally original and geared towards an audience that is hip, smart, and waiting for you and Amazon and Apple TV and Hulu and Peacock and everyone see to step up to the plate.(At least Amazon tried to do this with Carnival row, which I am sad to say was also a miss the mark presentation) the Wticher, for all its video game and novel appeal is a distinct disappointment. It was an hour long. It certainly held my attention. My wife left before the end because she hates the violence, which was considerable. I hope we will have to endure less bloodshed as the series goes on. Not that it's unrealistic, and the special effects are admirable, nor does it pander to the bloodless violence tropes of Hollywood. Perhaps there'd be less actual violence if people had a better idea what it looks like. There was some nudity and one rather chaste love scene. Compared to GoT, violence was more thematic than carnality. There was a bit more wizardry than I recall from the games, though Geralt was rather sparing in that regard.

Henry Cavill nailed Geralt, and the culminating swordplay was brilliantly executed. Roach seemed perfect for his part as well. Freya Allen as Cirilla (aka Ciri) gave us some interesting moments. The major characters looked good in their parts. Many of the minor characters had confusing accents. I felt the writing represented Geralt as I remember him, struggling to be a just and impartial actor in an unjust world that bids furiously for his allegiance. It was interesting to experience the invasion of the North by Nilfgard and to learn how Geralt became known as "The Butcher of Blaviken". I had little knowledge of Renfri and her tribe before this episode brought her alive. The same with Ciri's family.

Online reviews of the series have been mixed at best. In some ways, perhaps it follows too closely on the heels of GoT, while being even more weird and revolting. I plan to continue watching at weekly intervals. I don't think fans of the main character will be too disappointed.

Excerpts from other reviews:

"Over at Rotten Tomatoes, Netflix's The Witcher has a "rotten" (but barely) score of 58% from critics with an enthusiastic 91% audience score. As we showed in our roundup of The Witcher reviews, most critics found something positive to say amidst constructive criticism." -CinemaBlend

"I’m definitely not averse to the wild extremes of this genre — shout-out to the visceral blood terrors of Adult Swim’s Primal — but the first episode felt like cheese gone moldy. That nude bordello really edged the whole vibe in a fratty direction, and the long running time required a lot of take-forever talk about prophecies and destiny. Did you watch further into the season?" -Entertainment Weekly

Episode 2 did not disappoint. Anya Chalotra is BRILLIANT as Yennefer! I never fully understood her witchy personality before. Also I thought they did a splendid job of painting the elves in a sympathetic light. Joey Batey plays Jaskier the Bard, better know as Dandelion, and apparently sang his own songs as well. I found his personality highly annoying, but he has a sweet, well-controlled tenor; he's also quite the skilled lutanist. This episode helped my understanding of the Conjunction of the Spheres and its implications for elven-kind. There's a heavy dose of 'feel for the underdog' here. I hope we meet a few sympathetic human characters before the end.

In episode three I noted a relentless emphasis on the horrific aspects of Sapkowski's stories. I think this material will be too strong for the taste of most adults.

Episode 4 lacks subtlety.
