Amazing first season. I understand why most gave it a lower score. The show can be confusing for first timers or people who only played the games. But for the rest of us long time ACTUAL fans, this show is fantastic. Can’t wait for season 2

The worst adaptation i can think of. Full of SJW nonsense, the show looks cheap af, doesn't follow the books and the storytelling is amateur at best. The writing is on CW level. Awful, just awful.

Slower beginning, but great characters, interesting stories and amazing fight scenes definitely made up for it. I think casting was done almost perfectly and I’m in awe of Geralt’s and Yenn’s actors acting skills. Wait for Season 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having read the books (and played the games) I wanted to love this show. Instead I came out thinking it was just ok. I understand that things need to be changed around and shuffled when a work is adapted for the screen. However I never understood the need for unnecessary changes. The changes only serves to lessen the impact they had in the books (Renfri, the Djinn and the Last Wish, etc.). It all felt rushed and scattered and one dimensional. I'm hoping season 2 will be better now that the 3 timelines have converged and they dont have to cram 3 separate backstories into 10 episodes. Check out The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny books. If you liked the show, the books are much better. Expand

It's just that the majority of the story is told time-shifted, which is never mentioned or even explained up to the point where the two timelines meet. Also many characters, like Yennefer, are just unlikeable, worse, you can't even understand why they behave, or seemingly have to behave, disgruntled 24/7. Also the worldbuilding lacks a lot, things like the women of the forest, Cintra, or even Nilfgaard are just loose terms that get tossed around very much, but aren't actually explained that well. I want this series to be good, and I hope season 2 (and the following ones) will be better, the potential is there. Expand

I loved the games, thought the books were okay, but this is an absolutely crap television show (or rather, attempt at one). To be expected from Netflix, but I actually expected better when I heard Cavill was starring in it.

The plot jumps all over the place, with three different timelines. The jumping makes absolutely zero sense. There was no reason to film it this way and it just confuses most people. The dialogue is trash, there are so many blacks in this that it goes from confusing tokenism to pathetic pandering, and the only person who can act (surprise, it's Cavill) has a script that is ninety percent composed of grunts and single word mutterings of ****.

Skip this trash heap.

But After watching the First 2 Episodes i began to love his style and how good he played geralt in the series. I also didn't had a Problem with yennefer in the series, i Think the actress played the Role very good. Cirilla was also no Problem but i hope in the future, the actress is aware of the Role that she is playing, because cirilla is the most Important character in the whole witcher universe, and i was shocked when i heard that both, the actress of ciri and yennefer, wasn't aware of the Role that they were playing. I can imagine the pressure that those 2 actress have on their shoulders. All in all a must watch series for the witcher Franchise Fans, but there is one thing that really get on my nerves, and it is the reason why i only give 9/10 Points. It is because of triss actress. I can't say how much i lovvvveeeeeee triss, it was always my favorite character After geralt, and i have her on the same Spot as ciri, because i really really like ciri and i really really love triss. She is such a sweet, lovely, cute ,handsome, super good looking but also badass character in the witcher games. I can just repeat myself to infinity at how much i love this character. But when i saw her for the first time in the series, i was just soooooooo disappointed. Yes, i know that in the books she has brown hair, but i didn't liked the actress at all. I'am sorry but she just looked like a 53 years old Lady and for me she was so unsympathetic, and her look, i didn't liked how she looked at all, the face Impression just made her so unsympathetic. It was really hard for me to accept her in the series. I'am sorry for the actress, but they should have choosed a much better actress than her, an actress that looked more like triss from the games, because 80% of the People Knows the witcher from the games. I would like to see triss with red hair in the series, so that the actress looks more like her. After all i would give the witcher series a 9/10 because it is only 1 actress that i don't like. Expand

It made the timeline very confusing to follow and obviously lead to more frustration from fans than enjoyment because it was such a pain figuring out when the events actually happened and where they fit in the timeline.

Honestly, That decision really dragged down the show and I hope they got for a more linear approach in season 2. Putting that aside, It was ok. The cast was solid and the first few episodes were enjoyable but I lost interest by episode 5 with the final episodes being an absolute bore for me to sit through. There was very little dialogue, Episodes were far longer than they had to be and the CGI left a lot more to be desired.

Acting is the worst I've seen in professional movie-making at this level. Henry Cavil tries too much. Costumes are funny-looking, dialogue is stupid. And don't get me started on the cast. Setting nowadays political correctness trend aside, the choice is ridiculous. The saga setting is Slavic, they had books, they had games to take ideas from. It's not racist, but black elves and Indian or Arabic characters don't fit in the story. WTF. It's like watching the 300 movie with Japanese actors.

There was talk of this becoming the new Game of Thrones, instead they created a bad version of Xena the Warrior Princess. That was at least a parody in its own sense and at least watchable.

Propaganda done well can be admired. Look at Soviet Art. Done badly it invites mockery. They could have commissioned a fantasy series based in Africa and we would have watched that. It could have been excellent. But no, because the idea isn't to uplift certain groups but to denigrate others. This is so poorly made, acted and scripted, it beggars belief. Devoid of skill, soul or intelligence. E.g. It sticks numerous accents into small villages which is jarring and inauthentic, though everyone is a variation of British. It does its usual feminist promotion but thumbs its nose at disability without even being aware. The CGI is crass. Even the score is bad. Bar Cavill himself, who at least looks the part, the whole thing is just awful. We’ll look back and call it cultural vandalism. Game of Thrones had its flaws but compared to this it was out of this world. Expand

If they spent a little more effort and screen time to dig into the story and a tad less on their political touch points, this can really benefit. The monster CGI fights also needed some better direction. Don't let the terri-bad first fight scene in Episode 1 put you off, it does get much better.

Kevin Sorbo's Hercules by way of Game of Thrones aesthetic

It starts out as episodic tales of the wandering hero who values solitude and few words and it builds to a larger connected more epic adventure story.

It grew on me. I'm not gonna lie; I didn't like the first few episodes. But I stuck with it. I got used to the humour and the comic character and just surrendered to the show and had fun with it.. and I'm happy I did! The last half of the season is particularly impressive. I can't wait to see what happens next :)

One request: please stop breaking the 4th wall. That is all.

That's the reason I had some unfulfilled expectations after watching Netflix series. But during the process of watching the first season, I understood that it's a completely different take on the source material and by tossing off my expectations I began to get as much enjoyment as I could get. Some mistakes are made but it's a nice adaptation none the less. Worldbuilding is great, the soundtrack is quite good too, but I'm a bigger fan of Witcher 3 stuff. Henry is great and it is very easy to spot his devotion to this role and this universe. I hope that the show will do even better in the future because it's clear that there is still some space for improvement. Currently, I'm again intrigued in the story I already know so good, so that's a very good sign I guess :) Expand

A good take on the Witcher series. Although I must admit that I wasn't sure about Henry Cavill as Geralt when I first heard about the casting, I now have to admit he did a great job playing him.

Although they could have executed all the various plotlines a bit better, especially as you seem to jump back and forth between different years, said plots were all excellent and seeing it all get together at the end was nice.

Like the others, I'm less happy with some of the casting choices in this series based on Slavic myth, but with most characters it was just easy to roll my eyes, turn my brain off and keep watching.

Another thing was, that, although fight scenes against humans looked good, especially if it was Witcher vs. Average Human, when it was against obviously CGI monsters it looked a bit...off. Not especially bad, but not great either.

Overall, though, I'm happy with the Witcher and looking forward to/hoping for a Season 2. Might play the Witcher games again or pick up the books while I wait.

Expand

As in the books and games, the main character is Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) and i'm not afraid to say that he has done an incredible job with such a difficult character. Besides, the other main characters such us Yenn, Jaskier or Ciri are way better than I expected.
Although there are really good points, the show is not perfect at all. There are some decisions like Triss Merigold casting, or some storylines which are very different from the book. (I don't mean that the actress which interpretates Triss isn't good, what I mean is that if any character is perfectly described in the book like a white red-colored Triss, why would you have to change her? Is it necessary?).
In conclusion, if you are expecting to watch what you have red in the books, this isn't your show, but if you are open-minded you have to give it a chance.

I think the voice of Gerald was good but was hard to perceive. In that aspect, subtitles are a must. The Bard segments are deliciously funny. And Yennefer is dangerous and sensuous.

These 3 key components of the Witcher universe are done quite well and because the universe itself is very engaging it's easy to start liking this show.

But then the show starts making mistake after mistake.

Modern words make their way into character speech (survey, spa for example), which is absolutely offputting every time it happens - the books and video games have been using "old" English (in English localization at least) to great success and it is just so much more fitting for the world.

Some of the costume designs are way too "out there". Witcher series was known to maintain this "medieval Europe" kind of flavor when it comes to the visual design, it's been known for rather realistic-looking armor and clothing design, something you would still believe people would wear in medieval times. But some of the outfit designs in the show look like something you would find on a modern fashion show.

Main character cast. I think nearly everyone can agree that Cavill as Geralt was a really good cast. But sadly not every main character was as lucky. King Foltest is miscast - he is too old and unfit in the show to be a Temerian king some of us love. Triss Merigold is terribly miscast and it's hard to recognize the character in show's take on her. Ciri is miscast - she has a fairly dull blank stare in a number of scenes and just generally doesn't give off that energy and intelligence Ciri has in the books/games. Duny looks a bit too young and fragile for his character. Arguments could be made that Yennifer was miscast too, but it also may be worsened by really poor makeup she has throughout the season.

The next big one is the plot. Don't get me wrong, I understand that accommodations have to be made to make it watchable, it may need different pacing, order, etc.. But then they try to fix what's not broke and change the major plot points and a lot of it doesn't land well at all (or at least didn't lend well for me). They had 2 perfect templates to build their story around - the books (which it seemed like they wanted to go with) and the games. They chose neither. Moreso the show does a rather poor job at introducing the characters to the unfamiliar audience and without someone familiar with witcher it's really easy to get lost. Oftentimes character motivations are either poorly explained or not at all, sometimes they are only clear if you are familiar with either books or video games.

Some minor mistakes: names - the video games picked more westernized names for some of the characters (like Dandelion) for a good reason and it landed well. Not doing so in a show still targeted at the western audience is questionable. Next, Dandelion's songs don't sound like bard songs. For example, "toss a coin" just doesn't sound like something that could be played and sung by a bard with a lute. Next, the witcher himself - Geralt does appear to carry 2 swords with him, but never do we get to see both strapped to his back, neither does he have the iconic cat eyes. This is puzzling since they did go far enough to change his eye color, it's just not clear why they stopped there. Even more puzzling is the witcher medallion design - a worst-case scenario they could have gotten one from Amazon and it would do a better job than the redesigned one they used. Finally, some shots have really odd radial blur applied to them for no good reason.

Finally, the controversial ones.
Diversity - it's a great cause and should be done but you can't just go and alter main character cast for it - the main cast should be as faithful to the books/games as possible because these are the characters that all existing witcher fans will love and recognize, and all new fans will get to know and possibly (if they love them) seek out in the books or games. Now we are in a situation when people who were introduced first via books or games will likely not like the characters in the series and people who got introduced via series will be confused if they pick up the books or the games. Some of the new characters the show introduces are great and do it well, they should do more of that instead. Next, some of the "girl power" moments are just forced. The Witcher universe is rough and often unfair to women and both books and games do a great job at making a point without it feeling forced. How many poor and forced attempts do we have to witness to finally agree that it not only annoys people, but also has no expected effect. Nobody (and even more so none of the people who could use to learn such lesson) will watch it and have a sudden realization that "oh, they are right". People who already understand will just cringe and that's it. These "messages" will never reach anyone. What may reach people and make them think is already done via the stories of these characters and this world. There is no need to add these forced and cringe moments.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OK, let's tick off the Fantasy Genre tropes list..

Brooding, hunky, anti-hero who struggles to deal with who he is, gets thrown into a narrative by an action we discover as and when the writers deem it necessary.

Sultry, somewhat top-heavy, exotic, young woman who possesses magical powers. Driven by her defiance of rules laid down, she ends up being central to the other 'half' of the narrative.

Pre-teen Princess, blonde hair, innocent in appearance but harbouring a potentially malevolent and uncontrollable force within. The core character that the other two are destined to have their lives revolve around (going into Season 2). Oh, and said Princess has to be played by an actress who is clearly about Eighteen years old.

So, tick.. tick.. tick.

What has The Witcher got to offer people who might have been drawn in by what the producers hope will be the next teenagers blood and boobs fix, now Game of Thrones has ended...?
Not much, to be honest.
The story is bland and derivative, the characters likewise. The acting is as good as it can be, given the utterly awful dialogue. The CGI is passable, at best.

But what makes the show pretty unworthy of your time, is that outside of a few moments of excitement contained in each Sixty minute episode, you've Fifty minutes of sheer boredom.
The climax to the Season, whilst offering a cliffhanger to move on from, didn't make me want to see what happens next...

Disappointing!!

My issues with the show primarily stem from the storytelling and overall pacing, as well as some characterization hiccups and lack of worldI didn't hate watching this show, but I am very disappointed with how little my expectations were met. My issues with the show primarily stem from the storytelling and overall pacing, as well as some characterization hiccups and lack of world building.

So starting with the major issues first. I HATE the way the story is told in the show. Rather than focusing on Geralt (the shows namesake) we are constantly swapped from character to character whose story lines are more often then not, completely unrelated. I can see what the writers were trying to do. They wanted to show how eventually all these lines would intersect at the end but its just such a jarring experience (especially when you realize that much of the events also occur at different points in time) that I would have much preferred a singular focus on Geralt in his search for Ciri.

Moving on, my next complaint is with the overall pacing of the show. They're attempting to tell a story over the span of several YEARS in an 8 episode show. Because of this, their is very little suspense or intrigue developed because we as viewers know that anything going on in the current episode will be resolved before the credits roll. Every episode just feels like this sprint to finish the story arc. My next complaints are more minor but only further compound my disappointment. Some of the characterizations ,as well as some characters entirely, feel very out of place. Take Geralt for instance. While Cavil did an overall good job of portraying the character, it isn't to say his performance was without fault. There were many times that he would raise his voice or add an inflection to lines and it kept giving the feeling that it was someone PLAYING Geralt, not BEING him. I also took some issue with other characters like the bard, GOD I hated the bard. For me, he completely ruined certain parts of the show because of how often hes used as the comedic relief and only comedic relief. There was no depth or substance after his introduction, and it made me wish Geralt could have traveled with other characters he met, like the dwarf in episode 6.

Finally, my last problem with the show is how little the show attempts to build the universe around the characters. Every location feels isolated from the rest and none of the world feels connected in any way. It also doesn't help that the designs for everything from monsters, to armor and weapons, to magic, feel so generic and bland. The Polish culture that inspired the books and games feels completely lost in the show, making the Witcher feel like one more western dark fantasy show in the many we already have.

Overall, this show just doesn't do it for me. I'd rather play the games or read the books any day over watching this show again. The last episode somewhat redeems the season but its too little too late. The show did introduce more people to the Witcher and thats amazing in its self but it does little for those who already loved the universe.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I haven't read any of the books. I played a couple hours of Witcher 3. So to me this show is a bit confusing at times. It's entertaining though. I think Superman does a good job playing the Witcher overall. Yennefer is the best character by far at this point. She is much better then I thought she was going to be. Her storyline is interesting. The monster fights in this show are cool. A couple of the fight scenes felt realistic and are brutal. The only thing that took me out of this show was some of the forced feminist bs.. To start this show has a Queen in charge who is Queen Calanthe. She is the worst character in the show by far. At the beginning they show her in battle. Sorry but it's laughable that a old Queen is actually fighting. She does jump out a window and kills herself so. Unfortunately they show her in a flashback scene fighting again... This flashback scene in episode 4 about Pavetta was so confusing to me. I had to go on YouTube and figure out what was happening. This will confuse people who haven't read the books or played the games. It's the origin story on how Ciri became Geralts child of surprise, Pavetta is in love with a knight who is cursed and causes him to look like a hedgehog.. This flashback scene is poorly set up for people like myself who don't know these characters. Episode 5 was great. It kind of reminded me of the show Supernatural. Episode 6 starts out kind of woke with these two black women Taia and Vaia. They kill a man trying to steal Geralts horse. They are Borch Three Jackdaws bodyguards or something. You can tell this show is ran by women lol Anyways he wants Geralt to join his team to hunt dragons. He agrees because Yennefer is also going with another team. Jackdaws and his two female bodyguards fall off a mountain on the way. But they return at the end of the episode. Jackdaws is in the form of a gold dragon. This was actually pretty cool. He knew Geralt would help protect them from the dragon hunt. This show is like a mix between Elder Scrolls,Supernatural and GOT. The relationship between Geralt and Yennefer is a strong point in this show. I like that Geralt tells her that she's important to him because his nights used to be restless but now he can sleep. She really makes him happy. Although I thought rest was one of his wishes from the previous episode. Episoďe 7 shows the full events of the end of episode 1. Episode 8 was good overall. Kind of reminded me of Harry Potter. But it might as well be called Yennefer. She is the best character and has the most screen time. Her **** were massive in episode 8. I'm not complaining about that. And her powers are cool. She used this fire attack and killed a tone of guys in ballsack armor. Ya the ballsack armor looks so bad.. This show has a extremely diverse cast. At times it does feel forced because it is. It's going to piss some people off. This is a show made by far left feminist. Can't I get away from this??? I'm really getting sick of it... I just watched Star Wars... You would think Hollywood would learn by now... Everything has to be woke and diverse. Even when it hurts the story and characters... I will say this show does have a couple good episodes. And some of the diverse characters are good. But it makes the show feel off at times. Mimi Ndiweni who plays Fringilla is a great example of this. She really felt out of place in the last episode. Bad casting job. It's not a great show. It's not terrible. But it's worth a watch. Other than that its just riddled with flaws and bad directing. The misordered timelines seem to serve the purpose of appearing as original and innovative but they just point out the poor work of Lauren Hissrich.

This series should serve as a warning for what can happen if leftist brainwashed fools use your favorite fantasy tale for their own political purpose.

Henry is definitely my Geralt of Rivia. His enthusiastic portrayal of the white wolf is the best part of the show. His enthusiastic portrayal of the white wolf is the best part of the show. I also enjoyed the choreography of fight scenes as well as locations an overall atmosphere of this series. Unfortunately the show has some fundamental flaws such as character development. Lack of it, to be precise. I believe they shouldn't have adapted the structure of the book so literally and jump around in time while separating the show to three different timelines. Instead of focusing on linear storytelling, most episodes felt like filler episodes wandering back and forth with the stories from "the last wish" that serve little purpose in pushing the main narrative forward. Forced diversity is also something that disappoints for someone like me who sees these stories for what they are which is Slavic folklore. I am still hopeful for season 2 to provide a more focused story and better character development, especially for Yen. Expand

However it does have a number of issues that hold it back. Let's talk about the positives first. Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia is fantastic. He kills it with his performance as adeptly as Geralt could cleave a Nekker in two with his Silver Sword. His mannerisms and speech feel like he has been cloned from Witcher 3 voice actor Doug Cockle. Other standouts are Freya Allen as Ciri, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, MyAnna Buring as Tissaia De Vries who also voiced Anna Henrietta in the Witcher 3 Blood and Wine. But the real surprise came in the form of Joey Batey who plays the bard Jaskier (or Dandelion for those who are fans of the games). "Toss a Coin to your Witcher" is such a catchy tune and he plays the part perfectly.

Other casting choices I am less sold on. The choices of Fringilla Vigo and Triss Merigold I haven't been sold on yet. Hopefully my opinion changes in future seasons. The set design and in particular the monster design and visual effects are all well done. There are some truly spectacular monster designs here. More than I thought we would get. The downside is that some of the fight scene choreography while fast paced and action packed? There are moments that really push the suspension of disbelief. And yes I know Geralt is a mutant. But stabbing a guy in the leg I don't think would be quite enough to dispatch him if his adrenaline was pumping. Geralt handles the sword and has it behind his back at one point. Then there is the amount of twirling which leaves his back open. The armor of the Cintrans and Temerians looks fantastic. However what has been done to the nilfgaard armor is absurd. Narrative structure is a bit confusing. You jump between multiple characters at multiple points in time. It's not until about the 5th or 6th episode that these disparate timelines are brought together. They show you scenes you had already seen but from a different perspective adding new context. It's clever but can be a bit jarring to some. It eventually does make sense as you see new scenes inserted into these familiar snippets you have already seen. It's non linear storytelling and fortunately season 2 from the sounds of it will avoid this. It's certainly worth a watch for any fan of the series and I will say that a 2nd watch does add some greater context.

Mostly faithful fantasy adaptations should be rewarded. Having a strong cast, decent effects, and a story that makes you think and feel cinched this high score.

Boring, slow, confusing if you didn't read the books. Bad acting. Hope that next season gets better although the story in the books only gets worst as they go along.

The Witcher is a mixed bag of delight and annoyance, spectacle and boredom, humor and confusion.

I was looking forward to loving this, and there were moments when I did. The show's writing flaws, however, stick out like a barbarian at a royal gala, and making it to the end of this surprisingly short season felt like a dungeon crawl of its own.

Henry Cavill's Geralt is the best thing about The Witcher, and he kept me going each time I wanted to stop (which was often). He's not a fan of pomp or pretense, and calls people out on their BS. He's got a dry wit that cuts deep and makes me grin. That black armor steals the scene every time. I'm not too familiar with Geralt's mythos, but this feels like great casting. Cavill brings a likability that, combined with good dialogue, a healthy dose of mystery, and some solid character development, results in a winning recipe.

And yet, the show puts up a pretty thick wall between the viewer and the world of The Witcher, and it's called Lore (tm).

References to creatures, races, kingdoms, laws, historical events, legends, and important people are constantly thrown around without much of an explanation to the viewer. Best case, this leaves the viewer feeling left out, like we're not "in" on the joke or reference. Worst case, the audience can't actually follow the story. I've seen the entire season and about 40% of it made sense to me.

Putting all that lore and history aside, the very moment-to-moment decisions characters make aren't explained well, either. Many decisions are not conveyed well, and I can't tell what the characters are thinking a lot of the time.

Magic is also completely glossed over in The Witcher. If there's any kind of rule system for it, it's never actually discussed. People who shouldn't have magical powers are always using them. People who are SUPPOSED to be wizards won't use magic at obvious moments. Apparently it's possible to RUN OUT of magic, somehow. What's this "chaos" we keep hearing about?

The second main character we're introduced to is Ciri, who's completely devoid of all backstory, desires, sense of humor, personal taste, philosophies, or actual character development. She likes to play this game with bones, and she seems reasonably fond of her Grand mom. That's all we get.

Ciri is simply used as a perpetual and token damsel in distress, getting bumped from one situation to another, and making very few of her own decisions along the way. I found myself WANTING bad things to happen to her, just so she'd build a little personality.

Because the show's plot wasn't quite confusing enough, the writers decided to toss in some out-of-sequence storytelling. The story jumps back and forth between various time periods without warning the viewer. Characters clearly die and then reappear in later episodes without explanation. The passage of time is inconsistent. It's impossible to tell whether it's meant to be a day later, a month later, many years later, or even some time in the past. It doesn't help that it's implied that some of the characters might be immortal. Or maybe they just age slowly. I'm not sure. I give up.

Rounding out our trinity of main characters is Yennefer, by far the most frustrating of the three.

First introduced in episode two, Yennefer's story starts out well, setting her up as the underdog in a long story of self-discovery, determination, and growth, that... oh, wait, it's over. We don't get to see her gradual transformation or feel like we're along for the journey. Instead, all we get is a super-quick origin story that barely makes sense and ends with nowhere left to go. As a result, she ends up spending most of her remaining five episodes acting like an arrogant, bored, immature, impulsive, reckless, power-mad diva. Are we sure she's supposed to be one of the good guys?

None of these issues, however, are the main, glaring problem with The Witcher. There's no plot.

None of our three leads are actually TRYING to do anything specific. There are no goals, motivations, passions, recurring antagonists, or big-picture achievements for them to accomplish. Geralt wanders aimlessly from town to town, getting involved in local monster fights and trying not to "care" about humans.

Ciri KIND OF has a quest in that she's looking for Geralt. She's doing a real bang-up job of it, too, wandering aimlessly from town to town, asking random people if they've seen him and getting herself abducted over and over.

Oh, but Yennefer DEFINITELY has a goal. What she's after is to wander aimlessly from town to town, indulging various impulsive whims until she inevitably gets bored and moves on yet again. Picking up on a pattern here?

I could understand this being a mediocre experience if we were talking about a long season, like 20 plus episodes. Isn't the whole point of "quality over quantity" to be, you know, the QUALITY, Netflix?
