I wish the Poles had another crack at this show, I'm sure they would've done a bang-up job, just like CDPR did with Witcher 3. That said it's not as annoying and dumb as most of the recent American adaptations. It all boils down to - it's not the kind of Witcher I've fallen in love with but it's watchable. Yennefer is not really how I imagine her but the actress is great and her plotlines are the most interesting of the bunch. The cast in general, with the exception of Henry Cavill and a few others, is not really "my" Witcher but it's fine. It's an American Witcher after all. Still waiting for the real one though. Expand

This is despite the fact that the authors of the show completely distorted the message of the books, the world with its features, the characters and the race with their prejudices.
This show even as an independent work is bad - there is not even a hint of realism and logic and the visual component is not pleasing to the eye. But this is a show based on the book, so to say that it is bad show is to praise it. The series is terrible.
The characters are bad, there is not a single match for the book character. Races and kingdoms are poorly represented, magic looks like a laughing stock, the troops of all states look squalid, and witchers look like idiots. Almost all men are exposed as cretins, but women do not lag behind in the stupidity of their actions and judgments.
The plot is disgusting - in the first season there was still an attempt to show the events of the book, but in the season 2 authors decided to tell something of their own, distorting the original source. It came out awful.
What can I say about this show? Lauren Hissrich, writers and other directors - mediocrity, which should be throw away from the series. Netflix, hands off Witcher!

That being said i'm no way biased but this t.v show is incredible, the pacing is perfect, the characters rich in personality and all contribute to play their part. No one person holds this t.v show together, even the cameos of less actors are really well done based on plot and their lines.

The second season is by far the best and i didn't think it could get better after the secoond season, really anticipating the third season. When i heard Henry Cavil was playing Geralt i was really sceptical he could do it, but his execution is flawless doesn't play Geralt like he's a cartoon, but doesn't suck the life out of him either, the lines and quips they gave him are perfect doesn't overplay it. Can't believe the user score is so low for this show, it's a masterpiece.

I'll never understand why a TV writer, when given an internationally acclaimed book series, chooses to almost completely rewrite it. Is it pure egoism, they think can improve it? Did we learn nothing from Game of Thrones? If it's for budget, time constraints, difficult to translate onto screen etc. reasons then fair enough. But that's not what happened here. I cut season 1 some slack as it was tricky to structure all those short stories, but season 2 is abysmal. So many facepalm moments of terrible writing and character betrayals. Geralt just broods and kicks ass, Jaskier cracks jokes and sings his heart out, and Yennefer selfishly seeks more power. There's no nuance to any of them, and I didnt really see their character arcs (except Yennefer, and it's short).

Most of the supporting characters are also annoyingly try-hard. Jaskier's jokes are supposed to bring relief but as the show progressed they became cringier. His whole persona is trite and robs scenes of their seriousness.

The main thing that I really enjoyed was the lore of the magic and monsters. Seeing Yennefer become acquainted with the rules of magic and learning about the monsters Geralt was hunting was entertaining.

The first season was not the best film adaptation, but it could be watched, he gave at least some bright emotions. For the first season, it was demolished, despite the budgeting and inappropriate actors (Netflix, on the other hand). But the second season is already a transition to the section of comedy and bullying of the original source. I have not read all the books, I have not even finished the first part of the game franchise, but it hurts me to look at the characters and lore so bullied. Season 3 is no longer important, there is nothing to fall below, it is better to forget about this film adaptation. Expand

Characters are introduced with out explanation or naming, despite how "important" they are. The disjointed timeline is totally unexplained and leaves those without prior knowledge of the lore wondering what the hell they are watching.
2 of the 3 female "leads" are miscast, Cavill is... different, his performance improves in season 2.
I'd wager that if 'flix hadn't forked out millions for the rights and this wasn't The Witcher it would have been cancelled after 1 season.

Season 2 is better but not by much. More awful acting and atrocious dialogue. Dozens of intertwining stories get lost in the ether by bad writing and producing.

And the casting is something else entirely. I don't profess to having encyclopedic knowledge of every bit actor in Europe by any means, but if they've got the word "actor" on their CV Netflix has found them and put them in this show. I don't think I've recognised a single face apart from Cavill's and that Tormund from GoT. I've seen pornstars with better acting ability than this cast

The CGI in both seasons looks like something from the early days of Sharknado. And the sets look like, yes, rejects from Game of Thrones.

The Witcher TV show is wasted opportunity. The reality is it should have followed the games as much as the books. Watching the behind the scenes vignettes and the show runner thinks they are doing a bang-up job. They're not, The Witcher sucks and the only barely redeeming feature is Cavill as Geralt.

As a Witcher fan (mainly books, I mean), I honestly hope that season 3 will never come. Surely I will try by best to stop myself from watching. This abomination does not deserve this viewership.

Had this been a new, original brand, it would still be an average title at the very most most. But if one wants to lean on an existing brand, one must be prepared to be judgeded by it's standard. There is no room for excuses like "but it is not supposed to be to similar to the games". If so: drop the "Witcher" title as bait for viewers. You cannot have it both ways. We have been promised a "Witcher" movie, we have been served something else entirely. Naming the characters alike and squeezing in (with little logical justification) some of the action scenes from the game/books is not a believeable "magic trick". It's and easy run for your money.

Furthermore, this show takes itself so seriously. Not at all as the books or even the game. Enormous waste of time. The best thing about this show, that it is so bad when compared to the original, that a lot people went back to reread the books, just to cleanse themself from this S-word of a show.

If there was ever a re-try, the only thing I would like to see is Anya back. And no: not Jaskier (although I know this is an unpopular opinion).

To be honest, it could be worse. If you watch CW fantasy shows you would probably even like this one. But if you want something like Game of Thrones or some more of the Witcher games or books you will be disappointed.
It has some good moments, mostly thanks to Henry Cavill and Dandelion, but most of the time I was just trying to understand what people behind this TV show were thinking making so many scenes and episodes almost intentionally worse than they could be. The worst thing is that this show doesn't give you a feeling that this world is alive and breathing, with its own countries, cultures, races, organizations, laws, traditions that interact with each other by their own internal logic. You know, like good fantasy does. Instead it feels like a visit to a cosplay party where most of the people are just normal modern age guys you see each day, just in costumes. Seriously, even the old cheap polish Witcher TV show adapted some episodes from the book better than this high-budget title.
Anyway, I've finished it, and I've seen worse, but in the end it just filled me with regrets that someone better didn't adapt this book series.

The monsters are neat and interesting but the quality of the dialogue especially just doesn't come close to something like Game of Thrones' seasons 1-5, even 6 and 7 had better writing. The dialogue is either stilted or too contemporary and the result is that you cannot immerse yourself in the show like you could with GoT. In GoT the dialogue was so excellently written and delivered that you almost forgot you were watching actors play characters, the scenes took on a life of their own and became more than the sum of their parts, here you're keenly aware that it's just actors, ESPECIALLY because Henry Cavill insists on doing that voice. It takes you completely out of it when you know for a fact that it's not what he sounds like, it doesn't immerse me because it's silly. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s fine. It’s not great and it’s barely good. I’m not going to lie, season 1 I hated the Aretuza plot. But I started to like some of those Aretuza characters (mainly just Fringilla) in season 2. I wish there were more episodes in a season to get more monster hunting/Geralt stuff. You have Henry Cavill who is perfect for the role. Don’t waste that. Give me more of season 2 episode 1 type of episodes.

Netflix will never give this show the budget it deserves because they have a formula that every show is going to follow, for max profitability. Netflix should never have taken on the Witcher if that was their plan for this.

Though the cgi IS truly terrible at times, as are the shockingly cheap sets. The acting is too often confused and wooden as the script is a complete mess. All likley due to the weak direction and a total lack of quality control. Not sure who to blame but it's likely the show runner who has a track record of hit and miss projects. Sadly this is no game of thrones! It does get better as it goes along (but not by much) though it's just so much worse than the books or game or even the anime. The brand deserves so much better. The anime despite it's own problems really nails the feeling of what it is to be a witcher while this show doesn't have a clue. It's embarrassing at times how cheap and lazy the production is. I believe Henry has actually taken tips from fans for s2 because he had as much of a clue who Geralt was.. as the show runner. It's a real shame as the casting is excellent as is the source material. The show is technically based on the books but clearly the games as well even if its not officially acknowledged. The show is much like xena and hercules but not as fun. It's also inexplicably dumb at times but this might be due to the misuse of the giant budget. Also Its filmed in a weird disconnected order to its detriment as it confuses viewers. I believe this was the show runner attempting to make the missteps in production more interesting in editing. Maybe season 2 will be better now it's so popular. I Hope so. Worth a look but keep expectations low. Like really low...as there are equal good parts as there are clunky stinking ones :( Also if you do love the games go watch the nightmare of the wolf anime first. It's meant to help with season 2 but it's just so much truer to the brand than much of season 1. 6/10 Season 2 review: Google review doesn't discern between entire seasons lol so I've added 1 extra star. Season 2 is significantly better. The writing is still poor and the show runner is still mucking things up. The sex and nudity is long gone because the show runner thinks it covers up bad writing which it does but now we just have bad writing and excessive violence. Because the bodies we all share is far more offensive than cutting off people's limbs. The cgi is still far from perfect but it is alot better in that it's now acceptable to good rather than bad. The acting is still strong among the lead characters though minor ones struggle with the weak screenplay. Though the overall story is far more vague with far less actually happening and lots of names or places and people without much explanation. There are actual monsters now to fight so a real result and the action scenes are far more competent. Geralt is still as good as ever though he's a little more loving now. Yen is yen but with more clothes. Vesimir is quite good. The mages still scheme. Same old same old. The budget of ten plus million dollars doesnt feel like it's being spent well. There is still room for significant improvement. This is no game of thrones but atleast it's no longer Xena warrior princess. 8/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first season was somehow good despite the unbalanced attempts to enforce the director opinions and her being unfaithful to the books ...it still had many features which can tell you this is a Witcher books based show .......but season two drove me crazy I felt it is a huge insult for everyone who is a Witcher fan that played the games or read the books ....the Witcher experience is fantastic due to the interwoven story and amazing lore that doesn't create a good and evil rather it creates relatable characters that you can think deeply about that have a backstory which justify its actions ......the season 2 was just the opposite they think of us as stupid people that can't stand multiple sides motives and interests to be taken in consideration ......she just think we are dumb we need a clear good and bad sides which isn't true One more important thing she killed any chance to create a very icinic Witcher series moment in the future to play the gaunther odimms spoon Expand

I have also played all 3 video games including all DLC. As an adaptation the show stinks. The characters barely represent the original, in terms of visually (how they are described in detail in the book) as well as character wise. The plot deviates from the source material in absolutely MASSIVE ways, and not just in the "we have to translate it into a new format so have to change certain things" way, but rather changing and assassinating the absolute fundamental character traits and behaviors. And the plot just does not make any sense. The producer themselves stated they would rather create quick emotion fast-food because they believe the audience to be 0 attention-span ADHD tiktok teens who don't want any logical plot or character behaviour. The netflix show is the Witcher in name only. None of the plot, characters or characters are even remotely truthful. That being said, if one can watch this show while intoxicated and on a second monitor while browsing reddit or tiktok then it's not that bad. It's mostly well produced, so can still be entertaining if you pay no attention to anything. Some actors are really good (Henry Cavil is a phenomenal fit for Gerald, so is Jaskier and some others). The show is ruined by it's writing. It feels like the showrunner and writers just took a popular franchise and then immediately throw everything out the window to write their own story instead to feed their ego.

tldr; Can still be entertaining if brain is turned off. Terribly butchered if paying any attention - impossible to get immersed.

Henry Cavill is back (as gloomy as ever) in the title role as a monster killer. He’s partnered with Ciri (Freya Allan), as she prepares to take her place in history. The first season was more rugged and raw. There were lots of silly names and exotic places, but the monsters were more prevalent and the action more intense. Season Two obviously had a bigger budget: The dramatic locales, exotic costumes and CGI effects are all greatly improved. However, the story is more disjointed with multiple locations, time periods and storylines to make matters more complex. There’s also too much expository dialogue and needless discussion that interrupts the flow of action and adventure. Still, it's one of the better current fantasy series. (First season of 8 episodes was released in 2019 and 2nd season episodes is playing with a 3rd season announced. ) Expand

The most painful part is the poor writing and lackluster world-building that is crucial for making epic fantasy shows palatable.

Instead, it ends up feeling and looking more akin to Fantasy shows from the late 90s like Xena and Hercules, rather than a big budget Netflix production.

Personally the nudity and gore makes it occasionally hard to watch but I suppose that is what the source material is like. The story is also a bit hard to follow with all sorts of names thrown around here and there that you are expected to memorize at that moment.

Really looking forward to seeing more of this series in the future. The first two seasons have me hooked.

I wanted to write a detailed review but found myself buried in the mess this series is. It seems like authors chose the Witcher for a cool main hero, Ciri with skills that could excuse a lot and most importantly - a profitable brand.
Why else bother with calling it an adaptation, if you're trashing the complex world with its relations, characteristics and history, completely change deep, well-based characters for simple and unstable ones and throw away the main plot which binds everything.
Plot feels like the script was created based on a 5-minute summary video of the books, and even that being watched while multi-tasking on a conference call. How I imagine this call:
- Oh, Ciri develops a controlled interdimentional travel capabilities over several years, let's make Stargate out of it, you know, the bad seasons. And make her learn that on the spot while running. Tell her she can do it, because that's how women empowerment should work, right?
- Also, there's not enough people of color. Let's throw away the one's that were actually there in the books and make half of the folk black. No, not the southern nations, the ones in middle-ages-like northern kingdoms. Just not the ones in slums. This will add to realism. Oh, and don't forget the elves.
- What about people with disabilities? Llet's make Dwarves people with dwarf syndrome, with a dwarf woman with a beard. It's not like it's going to offend anyone, right? We can do it because that's more inclusive.

To summarise, I am a huge fan of The Witcher universe and understand that changes are bound to happen in adaptation, like they did in games. They can even add or correct some things in the original. I was disappointed with season one but I gave this series benefit of the doubt. I told myself that altering timeline and changing main character's backstories was supposed to create a solid foundation for season 2 for all viewers. What happened then is not even incompetent, but criminal.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Lauren...free will or fate, destiny...that is the question that's intrigued mankind since the first as Grey Warden would say. This is the ground and road that Geralt and Roach are travelling, way back in the middle ages Europe...on the road they hear stories about the time of axe and sword and a mysterious white frost prophecy...end of times is fated! In the game, Wild Hunt , Geralt does not believe it (old wives tales),all he wants is to find Ciri, not suspecting that Fate has given them a role to play -a role of destroying the world or saving it!...This is revealed to Geralt by an Elven Sage...it depends on Geralt if Ciri destroys the world of men or saves it (and lets the Elves of Eredin's world perish in White Frost)...Geralt hears but does not understand...we can't blame him, of course...reminds me of Grey Warden and the Demon Unbound '(Eyes are on you from on high.'..looks like the Maker has helped the Warden to defeat the Blight, is He going to help Geralt or is it all coincidence?)...This is the crux...one of the lowly ones, a witcher, a mutant despised is going to be in company of kings and socererses and on his character the fate of the world depends (wait a minute ...there was such a lowly character 2000 years ago)
This is the ground to build on...there must be some good in the world of men for it to be saved, otherwise Ciri will destroy it...and there is good in the games laughter an sincerity of simple folk in the villages and banter('nice scar want to see mine") and hilarious troll speech, and settings...true medieval Europe...and none of this in Netflix's Witcher!!!

Wtf is this **** Plot has no sense. THE WORLD HAS NO **** SENSE. Characters are **** up, except Geralt, he is the only well made character. A first grader would do that better. About the books. It is not even an adaptation. The only thingsWtf is this **** Plot has no sense. THE WORLD HAS NO **** SENSE. Characters are **** up, except Geralt, he is the only well made character. If I have to write about everything that they **** up, a whole day wouldn't be long enough.

The scenario and the logic are tragic.
These two points only thanks to Henry, Joe and a few other actors.

I great Witcher fan, i read all books (and ofc play the all awesome games). Still now i am sad...
The Netflix adaptation is not very bad, but not too good... in 2019 this is very few... :/ I think this is Hirsch & teams fault. Pro:
- Perfect

The Netflix adaptation is not very bad, but not too good... in 2019 this is very few... :/ I think this is Hirsch & teams fault. Pro:
- Perfect actors/actress: Cavill (Geralt), F. Allan (Ciri), MyAnna (Tassaia), J. May (Calanthe), Appleton (Renfri), Batey (Dandelion), Levy (Mousesack)
- Bloody
- R rated & adult
- Some good fight scene, and some good costume

Cons:
- Big battles look sh*t
- Many CGI is sh*t
- The script and writing is not too good
- Idiot timeline jumping
- FORCED diversity everywhere
- Ruined Toruviels charachter (omg that “actress”)
- Nilfgaards armors looks black paper sh*t... “armors” :D - Some fight looks noobs (Geralt vs full armored Cintrian soliders)
- Striga... omg look sh*t...
- Some actors/actress not good
- Some episode directing and cuts is just bad
- Dwarfs not dwarfs, just little man. :/

I hope the Netflix teams learning, and making good season 2. But now in s01: this is not enough quality.

Crap. Lame dialogs, charater's stupid decisions, miserable world-building, poor jokes, incosistent content. Too many chanegs compering to books. Characters with only one face expression, poor acting. Only Cavill makes a good job.

I was disappointed by the vulgarity and artlessness. It appears as if they're trying to copy "The Boys" - and that's not going to work for a "fantasy" series. Frankly, I am not going to bother watching any subsequent season.
