Demon Tides is a masterclass in movement. Chaining jumps, glides and wallruns together with such ease is exemplary and deserves recognition. The only downside is that there's often stretches of more empty feeling "open world" between the highlights of platforming excellence. While Metro Awakening stumbles in some finer details, it manages to deliver its ambitious core idea: Transporting the player into an even more immersive version of the bleak and desolate world of Metro. While the Quest 3 standalone version definitely shows the limits of the headset's hardware it is nonetheless an impressive display of graphical fidelity, interactivity and stunning lighting work. Black Skylands follows modern Open World design a little too closely sometimes and relies on resource collecting, outpost clearing and repetitive side quests a little too often. Nonetheless the core gameplay is fun, and the presentation of the pixelated world is charming. Due to the gameplay remaining largely the same throughout its runtime, this is best enjoyed in smaller sessions and some breaks in between.

Story, setting and main characters are still engaging. The fighting system is faster and more handy than in the original. And there are also some new quests and enemies that insert seamlessly into the game. Concurrently the weak points basically remain the same including too much there and back together with much better, but still behind the times, graphics. It wasn’t easy following the extraordinarily ambitious The Sinking City, yet Sherlock Holmes Chapter One takes some of the best ideas of its predecessor and builds on them, combining it with Frogware’s experience with the Sherlock Holmes universe. The result is a game that can feel very rigid and linear at times but excels in the deep and emotional exploration of Sherlock Holmes as a character. The Monster Hunter Stories Collection for PlayStation delivers around 70 to 80 hours of pleasant gameplay with fine round-based combat and a motivating character system. The remastered version of part 1 increases the experience by some nice visual improvements and benefits a lot from the totally new voiceover. It’s not on eye level with current productions, but that does not affect the atmosphere too much. The second part Wings of Ruin is still the better game with a richer world and a more complex combat system. But if you already played it on a PC or Switch, you do not experience much new. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expands Night City with a new district and a storyline right out of an espionage thriller. While the additional missions are among the best story-wise and the new district is a delightful mess of winding paths and shady alleys, the true star is the free 2.0 update attached to the release of the expansion. It overhauls nearly every aspect of gameplay and even delivers on some of the promises made for launch. It doesn’t fix the many issues with pacing, mission design and freedom of choice plaguing the main story, but improves nearly every other aspect of gameplay. Sadly there’s still many features missing from the original advertisement of the game and performance even after version 2.0 is still spotty to say the least. „Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty“ and the 2.0 patch would show a promising future, if this wasn’t also the last content planned for the game.

New World: Aeternum is a good MMO addition for console players. The combat works great with a controller even though that leaves it with a relatively low number of usable skills per weapon. Being class agnostic makes it so you can do whatever you want whenever you want. Pentiment might just be one of the weirdest AAA-games released this year. By stripping gameplay down to little more than walking and talking, this medieval crime drama feels like a visual novel that took the genre’s title a little too literal. The graphical style is heavily inspired by the illustrations of medieval books, which ties directly back into the main character’s background story as an illustrator. Despite a remaining technical problems, deficits in the number of alien types you encounter and a sometimes too predictable plot, Dark Descent still snatches our insider’s tipp award for June 2023.

Atomfall is a good survival-action game set in a unique world in an alternative1950's North England. The combat is fun. The exploring worthwhile and comes with much freedom. Nevertheless modern comfort is few and far between, what's part of the expericence, but could easily make you feel lost in a way that's beyond fun.

Ad Infinitum wraps a deeply moving story of trauma, loss, fear, and self-discovery into a horror game that gets under your skin. The sound design is fantastic and provides numerous moments of suspense. However, the debut effort from German studio Hekate also suffers from gameplay flaws and clumsy animations. But if you can get into the story and overlook the aforementioned flaws, Ad Infinitum is an excellent horror game with depth.

Building your own team could be a huge benefit for F1 Manager 2024. But because of the too risky finance system, is too easy to run into problems you cannot correct later. Beside that, F1 Manager 2024 is more or less the same game like last year, but with some minor improvements on- and offside the track, making it just a little bit better than its predecessor.

Battle Brothers is a dense and realistic tactical roleplaying game that offers almost endless replay value with randomly generated campaigns. Leading your band of mercenaries into battle may not be visually impressive, but the depth of combat and the degree of customization makes this an incredibly addictive game to play on the go. The switch may just be the perfect platform for a title like this that always lures players with the next reward around the corner.

Cat Quest III is an extremely charming pirate adventure that will quickly cast a spell over you and reward your thirst for discovery. Due to some weaknesses, the action RPG may not be purrfect, but the Purribean will certainly give you a good feeling.

The Night of the Rabbit is classic in two senses: a classic adventure game that is clearly modeled on Alice in Wonderland. The result is graphically outstanding, narratively convincing, but not very innovative in terms of gameplay.

Mount & Blade 2 is an unpolished diamond. Many of its systems need to be fleshed out, even after leaving Early Access and especially the campaign is a letdown when compared to the almost identical sandbox mode. Yet despite technical shortcomings, this game offers a realistic roleplaying experience in a grounded medieval setting that no other game can rival. Especially larger scale battles and sieges are incredible and almost justify the price of admission on their own.

Echo of Ada inevitably casts a spell over you with its gameplay loop. Each mission is associated with a not inconsiderable risk, which is why you should always weigh up how much you want to risk. However, problems such as the tedious grind and the microtransaction model prevent the game from seriously challenging the best in the genre.

Chains of Freedom ironically misses the mark where it’s most ambitious: In telling a deeply political and nuanced story with layered and mature characters. While the military drama unfolds a little too predictably, the solid tactical turn-based battles more than make up for it. While unlikely to blow anyone’s mind, this is solid across the board and has some very fun customization options for your playable characters to find your unique playstyle.

Screamer offers good, lightning-fast arcade racing that, despite all the speed and (potential) chaos, also possesses tactical depth. However, the sometimes severe balance issues in story mode result in significant deductions in the overall score. Narratively, the game is only okay, but anime fans will definitely get much more out of the presentation and the deliberately exaggerated characters than everyone else.

Death’s Door fails to live up to its intriguing premise. The quirky, wonderful world to explore full of unique characters is held back by uninspired gameplay and repetitive combat. In a world where games like Hollow Knight and Hyperlight Drifter attempt a similar mix of Zelda and Souls-like elements, Death’s Door simply doesn’t offer anything new aside from its interesting personalities. The game is still a fun experience for fans of this style of game, especially at the low price, yet the journey won’t be nearly as memorable as others.

Until Dawn remains a great adventure that feels like a teenie-slasher movie you can play yourself. Beside some technically issues it looks great within the new engine, but does not improve enough to make it a worth buy if you already played the PS4 original. But if you didn't play it yet, like the Quantic-Dream-like gameplay concept and horror movies as well, you are going to enjoy the remastered version from the start to the end.

Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe remains a fine jump-and-run game that makes mostly anything right concerning new HD graphics and new skills. It is fun to play, as long as you don't expect something very challenging. Also the scope of the game is fine, but especially fans of the Wii original should know that they should not expect too much from the completely new epilogue mode.

Bleak Faith: Forsaken is a game with a very strong vision. It puts players in a world almost comically oversized with no direction and just the sound of footsteps on metal floors. Later an impressive orchestral soundtrack paints a picture of a past long decayed while players are left alone, disoriented and lost. While combat is mostly mediocre, Bleak Faith: Forsaken has managed to capture the atmosphere of Warhammer 40k and the very first Dark Souls and somehow has woven them together into something new.

Scars Above takes some time to unfold ist true potential, both in the story and its gameplay. The exploration of this unknown planet in the role of a stranded researcher is unforgiving and refuses to compromise on the almost puzzle-like combat, even if some encounters early on can be frustrating as you get to grips with how the game wants you to play. Scars Above isn't for everyone, as it demands a lot more thought and strategy during combat than it lets on, but if you're willing to learn and be patient, this one's definitely worth your time.

Ravenlok may not be particularly challenging or deep in its gameplay or narrative, but it nails the storybook atmosphere and the child-like wonder of exploring a magical world. Clearly aimed at a younger and/or less videogame-familiar audience, this game makes for a brilliant entry point into the hobby and offers a short, polished, albeit simple dive into a fairy-tale come to life.

Tormented Souls 2 shows once again that developer Dual Effect can craft an impressive time capsule back to the horror classics of the 90s. While carefully modernized in some regards, such as adding more forgiving difficulty options that include auto-saves, it remains a highlight for those who miss the old school horror of Silent Hill and early Resident Evils. Though the very same adherence to classic game design and tropes may scare off those accustomed to the modern iterations of those series.
