May 8, 2025Really, it’s just worth playing if you want a love letter to late 2000s action games – or, I guess, if you want a time capsule from the same era that never saw the light of day due to a confluence of crazy factors. Either way, if that applies to your very specific gaming interests (and, weirdly, it does mine), then Captain Blood is a game you need to play.

May 27, 2025The journey through its levels is great, the action is excellent, and they do offer a curveball when it comes to new mechanics and challenges, which I liked quite a bit. All in all, Captain Blood is definitely worth it, especially if you miss those Xbox 360-era hack and slash games. It’s like someone locked it in a vault and released it 20 years later.

May 30, 2025Captain Blood is a time capsule into the PS2 era of character action brawlers, this time with a pirate theme. While it doesn't excel at everything, at least the great fights are undeniably present.

May 14, 2025Captain Blood is a curious relic, a patchwork resurrection of an era long past, one that struggles to find relevance in the present. Its brute-force combat and nostalgic appeal might offer fleeting moments of blood-soaked joy, but the weight of its technical flaws and repetitive design quickly quashes any sense of lasting engagement. It’s a game that wants to be remembered for its swagger, but instead, it’s a reminder of how games like this were left behind for good reason.

May 19, 2025It’s nice that something that would otherwise “die” did not, so the developer behind Captain Blood should be applauded - but that doesn’t mean that the game itself is an easy recommendation. It’s a pirate-themed hack ‘n’ slasher that, aside from the HD textures, is stuck two decades into the past. In other words, it’s an entertaining ride, but a bit too repetitive and, most of all, forgettable, so it’s hard to recommend it to anyone but its target audience and their nostalgia for the era this belongs to. Even they are advised to wait, however, because there are currently a couple of very annoying bugs.

May 13, 2025At its core, Captain Blood feels like a game that was meant to come out two decades ago. The gameplay harkens back to hack and slash titles of the past, and if it had come out then, it may have fit right in. However, in 2025, the title is extremely lacking. The core gameplay is repetitive, the audio mixing needs a lot of work, and the lack of polish holds this game back considerably. That being said, those looking for that old-school hack-and-slash experience may want to take Captain Blood for a spin as it delivers just that. Yet, for most players, this title does not offer much. It is still nice to see a game get out of development hell after all of these years, but it could have been so much stronger than it is.

May 25, 2025Captain Blood is a piece of gaming history that has been revived and that fact alone is fascinating. Captain Blood might have been an interesting game fifteen years ago but today it is simply bad. The gameplay is never really fun and the game is plagued by so many bugs and glitches. It also sports one of the worst audio aspects in the last decade or so. And yet it is a pleasure to know that this has been released after all, that people can buy it and that we had a chance to check it out.
