Eastward is not just the dazzling debut title of a very small development studio in Shanghai, just as it is not just a video game that closely resembles the best 2D Zelda in history. Don't call it Zelda-like: not because it's not a formally correct definition but because Pixpil's creature wants to be something more than the classic declaration of love to a title from the past. Eastward is one of the brightest examples of what are the true qualities of independent development: a real pearl that deserves to be discovered, perfectly capable of carving out its space in the niche of instant videogame cult. It is certainly one of the most surprising and impactful experiences of recent years, one of those titles capable of pointing the way to those who will come later.

The word "masterpiece" is often used inappropriately and risks losing strength. But if you look at the entire production of Kojima, science fiction as a narrative genre, and those video games that try to get out of the production and thematic logics of the mainstream market, it is undeniable that the merits of a giant should be recognized at Death Stranding.

Citizen Sleeper is a breath of fresh air for a genre like science fiction, more and more inclined to self-cite itself and to enhance its aesthetics, leaving the content partially in the shade. Its settings, although not directly observable, are alive, pulsating, and inside it is possible to intertwine with the stories of the inhabitants of Erlin's Eye. A sort of second chances simulator in which to create a new identity to start from scratch. Minimalist gameplay, stratospheric illustrations and an ethereal and dreamy soundtrack make it an essential experience in our opinion.

Despite the many years on his shoulders, the saga created by Ron Gilbert still seems to have a lot to tell. With Return to Monkey Island, the videogame author packs a nostalgic work, but deeply immersed in the contemporary world, which he tells with the usual dose of sagacity and irony. With excellent writing quality, the graphic adventure gives point & click lovers a fun and puzzle-packed experience to be solved using imagination, logic and careful observation. The experience offered by Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is cinematically all-encompassing: direction, music, interpretations (the dubbing in Italian is also convincing) are comparable to those of a blockbuster, and the revisiting of Spider-Man's imagery is superior even to the already excellent one of first chapter. We could discuss at length Kraven's charisma, the role of a powerful Venom, the intimate and perverse dimension of the symbiote but, clearly avoiding any spoiler, it is sufficient to reiterate how Insomniac has given shape to a high-school adventure, where playful soul and narrative move in symbiosis. There certainly remain some uncertainties inherited from the progenitor, yet the adjustments made to the formula and the greater quality of the secondary activities avoid the specter of the boring standardization of the open world, to give Marvel's Spider-Man 2 a lovably hybrid personality: that of a super blockbuster pop and, at the same time, auteur.

Exciting, recognizable and modern, Resident Evil 4 is the example of how to make a remake. The team directed by Yasuhiro Anpo has managed to preserve the spirit of the source material, reintroducing memorable sections, spine-chilling settings and an iconic bestiary with few rivals. However, the whole adventure has undergone changes of various nature and extent, sometimes more showy, sometimes more subtle, but not insignificant for this. Leon's investigation in Europe pushes the accelerator on the action dynamics but without betraying the survival horror cornerstones of the series, also thanks to the work previously done by Capcom on the second chapter. Thanks to these attentions, the comparisons with the abominations of the Illuminados have maintained the right amount of tension and the lugubrious atmospheres of some scenarios have been further enhanced. Always in line with the world of B-movies, even the plot now enjoys greater solidity, testifying to a process of updating the experience that has left nothing to chance. A missed opportunity and small imperfections, therefore, have in no way managed to reduce the pleasantness of what has been confirmed as an unmissable appointment for fans of the series and the reference genre.

Of course, some of that immediacy that made the original a Pong to the nth degree was lost along the way, yet in the end (despite an inadequate tutorial) the game could be worth the candle. Also because the first Windjammers will not disappear anyway, and can always be a valid alternative for purists. Victoria 3 finally arrives after years of incessant requests from the Paradox community and grand strategies, and it does it in style. The team responsible for the new chapter has managed to implement what fans were hoping for: expand, innovate and simplify a system of social and economic simulation without sacrificing the complexity that had so amazed already in the second title of the series. Victoria 3 is not a game for everyone but all those who want to play it hard will see this "investment" highly rewarded.
