Resident Evil HD Remaster is a golden opportunity for newcomers to face the real terror. For everyone else it is a chance to get inside that beloved mansion once again.

Resident Evil HD is a stunning recreation of one of survival horror's all-time classics. While some aspects may appear outdated, Capcom's zombie killer is one of the toughest, most rewarding adventure games you'll play, and the HD makeover ensures it looks better than ever.

It’s still such a great game all these years later, and is a must play for all horror game fans, especially those who never go to play the original.

Occasionally frustrating, but this remake delivers fresh shocks while still improving on a classic. [Mar 2015, p.66]

A sumptuous looking retread through an iconic scare-fest. Its fantastic frights are more than worth the uncompromising challenge. [Feb 2015, p.88]

I like Resident Evil. Still. And as a fan of the GameCube remake I enjoy the up-to-date presentation with 16:9 ratio and 5.1 surround sound. Nonetheless, one of the godfathers of survival horrors lost a little of its fascination over the years. It still is better and scarier entertainment than Resident Evil 6.

There's a beautiful simplicity to Resident Evil HD that serves as a reminder that the best mysteries don't need convoluted stories to be enthralling.

Expand

This is how Resident Evil should be right now with the atmosphere, scares, puzzles and item management.
Here's hoping RE2 gets the same treatment and that all future RE games come back to this quality.

WhileIn all honesty, this is one of the most pointless reviews I have ever done for a video game (including Metacritic and YouTube videos). While it is an excellent remake of a remake, you know what side of the fence you're on. If you like the original Resident Evil, or the original remastering, you know what you're getting. If you haven't played it though, you now have an opportunity to experience a true gaming classic in the best way possible. Expand

On its own: The major improvement to this game on this version is the ability to move in any direction at any point, as opposed to using left and right to turn your character, which may have built more suspense in the original, or led to cheaper deaths, depending on your personal opinion. It might seem tricky with the fixed camera angles, but if you just keep the analogue stick in place over angle switches, you'll run in a straight line until you redirect the character, which is pretty easy to get the hang of. Overall, the controls and added outfits are the strong points for this version.

    Compared to the Gamecube version:
I only just tried the GC version of the game, and this is where some of the faults start to become a lot more obvious when viewing it through the lens of a nearly 20 year old game.
The aspects that were easily better on Gamecube:
    - Grittier graphics, inspiring a more haunted feeling. In contrast, HDR looks a little too smooth and clean.
    - Better lighting.
    - Occasionally different camera angles, sometimes hinting at the suggestion of being stalked by someone.
    - Enemies moved notably faster, even on Easy setting. I got killed by the first dog.
    - The lay-out was actually slightly trickier on GC, with some halls/items being placed in slightly more dangerous positions.

Overall, if you have a Gamecube, that version is overall more engaging, but the PS4 version has a control scheme that may appeal to people who don't like the original control scheme.

Still worth getting, ALTHOUGH when you beat the game in a manner that unlocks the infinite ammo pistol, they add this one zombie strapped with bombs that auto-kills you when you shoot it, you can't turn it off, and it blows chunks.

This feels like the kind of franchise that needs to be a movie lol. It seems like a good idea but I don’t think this has any business being a video game.
