Even if you have never played the game or are a hardcore RE fan, this is a must have game on your new-gen consoles (even if just to remind you how games were when they made you feel vulnerable, afraid of the unknown and required you to be fully aware of every move you are about to make).

Let me be the first to say that I love this game. Love it, love it, love it. This game sets the bar for what Survival Horror is supposed toLet me be the first to say that I love this game. Love it, love it, love it. This game sets the bar for what Survival Horror is supposed to be, a bar so high incredibly few games have been able to reach it since 2002. I first played REmake on the Gamecube, and have done playthroughs of it rather recently, so the differences between both versions pop out at me more. Going forward in the review, I will write assuming that you have never played the original version, and that this is your first time experiencing the game.

The storyline of this game is the one that created and shaped an entire franchise and defined a genre, so it's safe to say it's rather well done. You play as either Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield, members of an elite division of the Raccoon City Police Department called S.T.A.R.S., who are on a search and rescue mission for the missing members of your unit. While the game plays mostly the same depending on which character you choose, there are some major differences that throw curveballs at you. For example, playing as Jill gives you access to the Lockpick, which makes entry for certain rooms much easier than Chris, who has to scour the mansion for keys to unlock these rooms. Jill has more inventory space, but can take less damage. Playing as Jill means you're assisted by Barry Burton, who can save your life and drop you ammo from time to time. Playing as Chris means you will cross paths with Rebecca Chambers, who can treat your wounds and restore your health when you visit her. There are also key differences between the characters in the sense that playing as Jill allows you to capitalize on her unique skills, such as chemistry, lockpicking, and piano playing. If you choose Chris, you have to do more brute force and exploration to progress, but his permanent access to the lighter makes it easier to torch zombies.

Ah, yes, zombies. The key staple of the Resident Evil franchise and this game in particular. They will be the main enemies you fight throughout the game, but the zombies in this game come with a twist. After killing a zombie using any means that didn't involve decapitation, the body remains where it fell. Unless you burn the bodies using kerosene and a lighter (both of which take up inventory space and time to find fuel) the fallen zombie will eventually mutate into a V-ACT and become much faster and stronger. This adds an interesting dynamic to the game. Do you go out of your way to burn the bodies, do you just avoid killing zombies entirely, or do you take on the V-ACTs as they reanimate? It all depends on your play style. There are also other enemies in the game, including mutated dogs, spiders, plants, and snakes, all of which require different methods to successfully take down. Later in the game, the Hunter is introduced, which accelerates the game by giving you a much faster and stronger enemy to fight as you backtrack through the mansion, ensuring things don't get stale. There are also a few boss battles throughout the game to keep things interesting.

The graphics in this version are enhanced, but still don't truly hold up to brand new modern releases. Despite this fact, the game still looks gorgeous. A few cutscenes were changed to add a bit of flair to them, but nothing overly dramatic. One of the biggest improvements is the lighting, the Gamecube version was too dark at quite a few parts, but this remaster seems to have corrected those issues. The cheesy dialog remains, and the rest of the game is just as fans should remember it. In true Resident Evil style, there is quite a large number of rewards for completing the game multiple times. Speedrunning the game unlocks unlimited ammo pistols and rocket launchers, and beating the game on increasingly difficult modes unlocks new modes to try. For example, completing the game unlocks Hard, completing Hard unlocks Real Survival (a mode automatically set to Hard that doesn't allow item boxes to be linked, meaning you have to be careful of where you place certain items) and beating Real Survival unlocks Invisible Enemy mode. This encourages players to continually test their skill levels and to come back to the game multiple times.

My only complaint about this edition of the game is the feeling of the controls. Everything felt amazing on a Gamecube controller, but they didn't translate over perfectly to the Xbox. Pushing up on the left stick causes your character to run automatically, which feels a bit sticky in multiple situations, especially when coaxing zombies into grabbing for you. The default controls are available, where you have to hold down a button to run, but even these feel a bit clunky on this controller. A small complaint only noticeable by those who have poured hours into the previous version of the game, and the only thing that sticks out as an issue.

Overall, this game is a masterpiece. An incredibly well done remaster of a remake that will make Survival Horror fans fall in love all over again.

The REmaster is a port of the Resident Evil Remake which was a remake of the original resident evil. This game is fantastic, it brings back nostalgia and is very affordable. Capcom made a good move by making it only $20, which i'm sure will make many people buy it as most companies are charging $40-$60 dollars for remakes/remasters. Anyways, here are a list of pros and cons.

    Pros:
    1. Fantastic atmosphere, you fear every corner and there is always a sense of tension as anything could happen.
    2. Well made soundtrack, it knows when to be quiet and when to play music. The music is very unnerving and really helps add to the games atmospheres.
    3. Genuinely scary, one of the scariest games ever in fact and scarier than anything released within the last 10 years.
    4. Challenging, the difficulty is hard for anyone playing on normal or above. Very easy and easy are for beginners to get the grips of the game, if you like hard games play on normal or above. This game stretches your resources and makes you strategically save and grab items. In one room, there may be an herb but there also may be ammo. There's also around 3-5 zombies and you don't want to risk going back there because you have such low healing supplies. You are also running out of ammo, you need to make a choice and it needs to be fast as the zombies are approaching. The scenarios in the game like this make it challenging and fun to manage inventory.
    5. The graphics although not up to today's standards are good. It looks a lot better than back when it was released on the Gamecube and Wii.
    6. Multiple endings and many characters to save. I won't say too much about this but your choices can effect both the ending and the game itself. Not saving certain characters loses you access to certain weapons while not saving other characters gains you other weapons. It's interesting to see what each character does for you/the story. It makes you want to replay it to experience saving everyone and not saving everyone.
    7. Speaking of replaying, this game has tons of replay value, there are leaderboards with your times and others to beat. There are dozens of achievements, many relating to different playthroughs such as not saving and beating the game using only the knife! Like I mentioned above, you will want to play through it again immediately after you finish it to see other endings and other characters impacts when dead/alive.
    8. The achievement list is hardcore. There are achievements for beating the game in under three hours and beating it using only the knife! How much hardcore can an achievement list get? Not very. Every achievement you unlock actually makes you feel like you've accomplished something, unlike most modern releases.
    9. The Lisa Trevor story is very intriguing/sad.
    10. The massive amount of puzzles will keep you busy on this game for hours, the first time around will most likely take you about 8-12 hours depending on your puzzle solving abilities.
    11. It's a steal of a deal that you have to pay only $20 for this remake, when others go for $50-$60.
    12. It's a very fair game, every mistake you make is your own fault, much like Dark Souls.
    13. The new "modern" controls make the game much easier to play.

    Cons:
    1. The graphics like I said aren't up to todays standards in a lot of cases.
    2. It may be a little too difficult for the modern day gamers, most people are accustomed to games that hold your hand, this game won't help you at all.
    3. The tank controls can cause frustration if you haven't played a classic Resident Evil before.

Overall, this game is worth it no matter who you are. Professionals will appreciate the changes, while newcomers will feel welcome with the lower difficulties. The price tag is cheap, there is no reason to not pick it up. I'm almost positive you will not feel buyers remorse after completing it, you will more than get your moneys worth from it.
