The movie is interesting, but would have been better as a series. Marvel mishandled it.

Diverse characters each with their own story, their own belief’s blend perfectly with each other. I felt a connection with every one of them and an understanding of why each does what they do. Eternals really packs it in with good characters, strong story with huge concepts, tonnes of references, good pacing, big reveals and sets things up for some cool possibilities to come. I have no problems with diversity, if anything there still isn't quite enough, really. A few little plotholes but if you see it as the modern mythology it's intended to be - just a great entertaining spectacle with plenty to keep your interest. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very few redeeming features about this film, it’s very boring, the deviants are just not exciting to see on screen and are built up for seemingly no reason. Acting all seems subpar or characters undeveloped… which is strange because there are some big names in the movie, definitely needed to be split into two movies tbh.

The visuals however, are great, and there are a few individual moments that are good throughout the movie.

A bunch of pseudoscience makes it really hard to care.
I meant, robots creating planets?
Robots sending other robots to farm people to give birth to new robots? Why do they need people? Who knows...
Blue alien cgi monsters fighting robots for... reasons...
All that with time jumps that would make Witcher season 1 blush...
Oh and of course evil superman, because Boys didn't do this to death yet...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have no exposure to the Eternals in comics. However, I do occasionally read comics and have enjoyed most of the MCU. On that note, I had no past exposure to Shang-Chi and I enjoyed that film quite a bit. So, I went into this movie with an open mind. I was seriously disappointed. In short: The acting was subpar. The characters weren't likable. The pacing was off. They tried to do too much. It was probably 30-45 minutes too long.

It seemed like the director/creative team wanted to tell one story and Marvel/Feige wanted to tell another. One regarding the Celestial story and another regarding the Deviant story. They were somewhat intertwined (explaining the cycle of life and creation of the eternals), but could have easily been separated into two movies. Personally, I felt like the stakes were higher with the Deviant storyline. However, just as I thought the Deviants were being set up as the threat for the sequel, they were unceremoniously killed them off. It would have been a great cliff hanger to have Ikaris (and maybe even Sprite) in hiding (instead of suicide by sun), then they get simultaneously struck by the tentacles of the main Deviant, Ikaris starts to turn gray, the main Deviant starts to change, then cut to black. The Celestial story was a bit eye-rolling and boring for me. Mainly because we've already seen this story. In Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Ego (a presumed Celestial, but now the writers of the Eternals say he may have been "lying") is discovered to have planted seeds on other worlds to convert them into other Celestials - destroying the planets in the process. In Eternals, the Celestials have conspired to prepare Earth (and other planets in the past) as a womb to give birth to other Celestials - destroying the planet in the process. In Guardians 2, there was emotional investment in stopping Ego and minimizing destruction throughout the galaxy. In Eternals, we (the audience) already knew Earth wouldn't be destroyed. So, what were the stakes?

Additionally, the weird attempt at a love "square" between Sersi, Whitman, Ikaris, and Sprite was a huge fail. Whitman was barely in it. Sure, Sersi and Ikaris had some chemistry but not enough to be investing. I understand the attempt at empathy with Sprite, but it ended up just being creepy.

Ikaris' betrayal was flat out dumb. His motive of "I'm a Soldier and I will complete our mission" wasn't believable. The Eternals were his family. The Celestials were his boss. No one picks their boss over family. It would have made more sense for him to be doing it all for Sersi. Each time the Eternals are sent on a new mission, their memory is wiped. Him wanting to complete the mission, so Sersi (and his) memory is wiped and they can start over on a new planet (without Whitman) would have made way more sense.

I'm all onboard a toning down all the quips/jokes and being a bit more serious in the MCU. However, most of these characters were not likable. Sersi, Makkari, and Ajak were one dimensional. Ikaris ended up being a mindless tool. Thena was a liability. The entire character of Sprite was a bit creepy. Kingo seemed like one of the better characters until he suddenly said that he didn't care if they saved the world. Phastos was similar to Kingo where there were moments that he was likable but his character was too wishy washy - pretty sure he wouldn't have needed convincing to help save the world that his husband and child lived on. Druig was a whiny jerk with a god-complex (and super poorly acted, which is a bummer cause I loved Keoghan in Killing of a Sacred Deer). Gilgamesh was awesome and I understand why killing him off made sense for the story - to help "awaken" Thena - but I think flip-flopping this where Thena dies and Gilgamesh goes on to fight harder and eventually take out the main Deviant would have been more satisfying.

In my opinion, this was hands-down the worst MCU film. If they never made a sequel, I wouldn't lose any sleep.

The Eternals are basically useless bunch of incompetents who's only superpower is that they don't age. And even Hawkeyes daughter could easily kill them with a single arrow.
And yeah sure it is totally believable that a cosmic "super eternal super being" who can't die.....ehmm...age, and has some super powers is suffering from physical flaws like......can't speak, and has hearing aid? WTF man? Who wrote this movie? But hey at least they could mark 2 checklist items for the requirements of the oscar nominations: "At least 30% of all actors in secondary and more minor roles are from at least two of the following underrepresented groups: - LGBTQ+
- People with cognitive or physical disabilities, or who are deaf or hard of hearing"
I think we can all agree that with the death of Tony Stark, the MCU died too. All they released since that, is garbage.

ItThis movie faced a bit of criticism so I waited until it was available on Disney+. Actually this is an enjoyable movie. I might not be the best MCU entry and a has some weaknesses but it is not the total failure some others claim it to be. It is the story of the Eternals. Those are heroes with superpowers that do not age. The Celestial Arishem send them to Earth approx 7000 ago (Celestial’s = cosmic beings with god like powers). They should protect mankind from the Deviants which are super predators mankind could not defend themselves. The Eternals are also forbidden from interfering in human affairs. However their time on Earth shapes them and in the present an unexpected event will put them to a challenge. I am avoiding spoilers here so I apologize for being a bit vague. The story works mostly well. A valid and often heard argument is that they wanted to put to much into the movie. I see the point and wont disagree but say for me it is enough to understand the motives of the characters. All characters have their development and quirks or facets. I freely admit that more would work better and maybe a TV show spanning the whole history could work well. However I repeat it is enough and I liked the characters. The humor works well and the twists kept the movie interesting. Lets continue with the actors. Gemma Chan as Sersi has the lead role. I like her character and development. Hope to see more of her and she won me easily over. One of my favorites is Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo. He is so enjoyable and you will know why ;-). Bonus for his assistant Karun played by Harish Patel who is the hidden gem of the movie. Then we have Druig played by Barry Keoghan who is an interesting character and from a moral standpoint also worth analyzing. I think he is a strong asset. I was a bit divined by Richard Madden as Ikaris but he convinced me at the end. Brian Tyree Henry as Phaesto is amazing too and I would like to see more of him. For Gilgamesh played by Ma Dong-Seok ans Thena played by Angelina Jolie I say they wasted both a bit but they fully deliver with what they could. Sprite played by Lia McHugh is fine and has good scenes. I say it is a good performance but I see potential for improvements which is actually a common statement for the movie. Lets go to the presentation. I am divided here. The effects are still good but the design for the Deviants is unappealing. They do not work as intended in my opinion. The other effects are fine. Another negative are the fights but different then you imagine. The fight scenes itself are good even if they are not on the levels of the better MCU movies. My problem is that the Eternals are on even ground against the Deviants and each fight is serious and dangerous. It is hard to believe with all the struggles that they suffered no casualties in all the time. Other than that I already point out that they could do more. Overall I say it is worth watching and entertaining but will probably not end on many top MCU movies lists. Expand

Venom was a movie which felt like it was made in the 90s when many comic book movies weren't good. The Eternals had great visuals, epic and catchy music by GAME OF THRONES composer Ramin Djawadi, fun and new characters; Ringo and his assistant were fun. I don’t know wtf these critics and some audiences want! If a movie has too much action then they want some characters development. When they try to develop characters, then the movie is boring and want more action; Eternals had both! The movie tried to tell a new, different story, with different characters while world building and world building takes time and exposition! I can’t believe these critics liked Black Widow, Hulk, Iron Man 2 and 3, Captain Marvel over The Eternals. Maybe it’s slow at some parts, but that’s where you develop characters! You cannot have action 24/7. Anyways, I cannot wait to see more of the Eternals in future MCU movies and shows since this movie literally changes the MCU from the formulaic films they’ve been so far. Which people have been complaining about as well. Expand

I will note that I don't know a thing about Eternals, I have never heard of them prior to this movie nor had a whole lot of interest in it. However, it is a part of the MCU so it is a mandatory watch.

My biggest complaint comes at the length, it clocks in at 2 hours and 38 minutes, and this wouldn't be a bad thing if the movie was REALLY good, or was a finale to a set of movies that came before, but I didn't want to watch this movie in the theatre because I struggle with sitting down for that long so I waited until it came to Disney+ to watch it instead. The first hour or so of the movie is quite slow and focuses more on character building and its ok, but just got quite boring after a while. Things really started to pick up in the 2nd half and became much more enjoyable to watch.

The amount of characters in this movie is fine, I know there are people who complain that there is too much and I can understand that view, but I knew going into this movie that we had a big cast so I wasn't expecting a major amount of time spent on certain characters. The ones that are focused on the most are fine, the issue mostly lies with me not feeling emotionally invested in any of them. There is a villain in the movie that can absorb powers by defeating Eternals and transform like Cell or Buu from Dragon Ball Z, and I just wanted to see this guy absorb a bunch of the Eternals and keep changing forms and getting stronger, that is how little I cared about most of the characters, it isn't that I didn't like them, I just didn't feel any real emotional connection to them.

I didn't mind the plot, wasn't anything exceptional but it did the job and I like how we put a focus on basically the first superheroes related to mankind. Some of the motivations of certain characters does bounce around a little bit too much, some decisions they make made me scratch my head like one not agreeing to help the Eternals so he can be with his family, despite the fact that the world would end and he would lose his family if they failed... very odd sometimes.

The look of the movie is gorgeous, the CGI is awesome to look at and the combat when tied in with this is awesome to watch.

I can see why there may be a divide in the movie, this may not be for everybody but I think its worth a watch, especially if you are following the MCU, though I don't think it is one I need to watch again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie isn't a typical MCU that relies on large action scenes to tell a story. And, even as a hard-core MCU fan, I loved every minute of it. It doesn't involve a villain who has a master plan to take over the world. It's about a group of people mislead to believe in their mission is for good, when it's actually putting innocent lives in danger. It is a story of real risks and complex factors. Do the Eternals do what they were made to do and in turn give life to countless more planets and civilizations, or is Earth worth preserving? The only downside of the plot is the fact of the MCU exists in the first place. Because of the billions of dollars spent to build the MCU, the outcome of the film is very predictable. Despite this, the film is filled with real emotions that you can feel between each character. You can feel the internal conflict each one faces. And because of this, this film should not be evaluated as a MCU element, but a stand alone film with implications that effect the Cinematic Universe as a whole. Expand

This movie was very different when comparing it to most Marvel movies, or even superhero movies for that matter. It had a vision, it had a good, solid, concept with a moral dilemma splashed among the characters and story, and it had outstanding visuals. But at the core it had some story issues, there were too many characters introduced for us to care about any of them as much as the movie wants us to, and it was just kind of a mess in terms of a consistent story, it jumped around a lot. Remember Birds of Prey how it was all over the place; because Harley Quinn was telling it and she has a screwed-up head? This movie jumped around MORE than that and there wasn't a reason for that like in Birds of Prey. Solid movie, not amazing due to the non-consistent story, but overall some great writing, core story, and just a pretty good time killer overall. Will the Eternals be as iconic as the Avengers or Guardians of the Galaxy? Not in a million years. But still an enjoyable experience. Expand

Total garbage. I'll admit it, I'm not a comic book person, but I have enjoyed some of the Marvel stuff. They're good, solid, blockbuster fun and there is some exceptional storytelling, so I'm not a lover or a hater. This is just pure dreck, though. You can tell it's a movie made by the diversity and inclusion team at Disney. I don't mind that **** if it's organic, but anymore I just see through to what it really is; unadulterated corporate pandering. I could even tolerate that if there was decent storytelling, but there isn't. In fact, some of it is just insulting. I only lasted 30 min. A deaf God? That's too far. Surely we can tell solid stories with deaf characters, but c'mon!

Overall Eternals wasnt as bad as some of the reviews id read had led me to believe but put next to the stronger releases upto this point it definitely stands out as a messy product. The tone changes almost scene by scene and there doesnt seem to be a particular style to the direction just exposition scene after exposition scene. Not really sure i like the direction the last few marvel films have taken but this one sits firmly in the category of ok for a 'switch off enjoy then forget' experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is the very definition of mediocre. It is not as bad, as some people make it and it is not as good as others make it. At the end it is watchable, but a bland experience, like stale bread. A few points in no particular order:

The visual effects are 2/3 gorgeous and 1/3 really bad and boring. The deviants are very generic, the whole vulcano part looks artificial, I don't buy the costumes and I find it kinda hilarious that they wear exactly the same stuff for thousands of years. That's quality! The ship looks way to small on screen, most of the time I have the feeling you couldn't even stand in it.

There is too much going on. To many characters, to many topics, to many locations, to many ideas... most of that stuff is not explored while the themes in itself like love, betrayal, not aging, one existing world vs. thousands to be born, are good! All of that could actually be really interesting, but there is no time to develop any of it. The result is, when people start dying I simply don't care, I had no time to get to know these characters. The Avengers worked because we had time to bond with these characters in their solo movies.

Some of the logic of the movie seems plain wrong. The Eternals should be really powerful, Thanos level powerful actually, yet they feel really weak. One determined Avenger could probably take down most of them and one of the Avengers power houses would mop the floor with this flying dude (sorry, still can't remember most of the names). There are very few deviants, I don't really get the threat. I don't think 10 deviants could take down millions of dinosaurs. Why is there an "alpha deviant"? There is no explanation for that. If they are space robots designed for a purpose, why are most of the designs so weak? Wouldn't it make more sense to just create 10 flying dudes with laser eyes? The movie "explains", why the Eternals didn't interfere with Thanos and Ultron, but there is no logic behind it. These events where a threat to their mission, so they should have interfered. I also don't get why no other character shows up, at least when the action is over. A giant statue coming out of the ocean should interest someone. Most actors are wasted, especially Kid Harrington and Salma Hayek. I was really hoping for the Black Knight to be in this. The movie has no villain. The deviants are more like a distraction or wild beasts without any real agenda. The betrayal part is weak and boring, I wasn't shocked by it, kinda saw it coming. Marvels Eternals is essentially a movie without an antagonist and that simply does not make for interesting story telling. The climax was like preventing an earth quake and it had no gravity to it, there was no sense of urgency or threat, it didn't feel like a final stand to save humanity.

So, all in all, I found the movie a rather boring experience. I checked my phone so much while watching it, I actually had to rewind a few times to catch what's going on.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie offers a novel experience on what a superhero movie can be while building upon the foundations laid by the previous entries of the MCU. While it's runtime and pacing seem to be off-putting to others, I've found the movie to be quite satisfying and to be an excellent introduction for the "celestial" side of the Marvel universe. Expand

I usually do but the trailers just didn't sell me and the characters themselves I have no knowledge about it to care. Then the reviews came out and it was very negative. This was the final nail in the coffin for me. The premise is "The Eternals, a race of immortal beings with superhuman powers who have secretly lived on Earth for thousands of years, reunite to battle the evil Deviants". So are the reviews correct or is this movie actually better than the reception it was given?

The most obvious praise is the visuals. MCU movies tend to be pretty dull looking for the most part. There are a few such as the Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor Ragnarok where the visuals do have more impact. In Eternals, the visuals are gorgeous! A lot of the shots are incredibly vibrant and stunning. Even when it is just a shot of them standing around, it looks more picturesque than anything Marvel has done before. The CGI was also astonishingly good. The CGI of the Eternals power was great, the enemy Deviant design and CGI was great, plus the Celestials were amazing in scale and scope. Eternals also explores some interesting themes about humanity that I do like. There are also some really great action sequences in the film. The forest action sequence is memorable as it has a cool Superman-like fight scene. The final fight is also quite great too with how the abilities of the Eternals are utilised. Special praise to how they handle the Eternals, Markari, super speed power as they for once don't use slow-mo which makes it look more unique. I also think the actors do a great job. Kumail Nanjiani and Brian Tyree Henry are both a joy to watch when on-screen while getting some genuine laughs from me. Richard Madden is cool yet menacing. Lauren Ridloff despite being deaf, easily convey the right emotion for the scene. Barry Keoghan is creepy yet charming and Don Lee gives a real lovable performance.

However, there was just something off about the main lead Gemma Chan who has the most screen time. Her performance was just very wooden and dull most of the time. She has been in the MCU before in Captain Marvel (2019) and I remember her standing out a lot. So it was just kind of odd how boring her performance was in here. Although, the major reason for this could be how her character, Sersi, is written. Every other Eternal has a clear personality, views, motives and problems. Sersi just seems to love humans and has some love problems that feel very inconsequential for the most part. She is a very boring main character with the other Eternals being way more interesting than her.

On that note, this movie has too much going on. Each of the Eternals has its own problems that get brought up but immediately brushed over in a matter of seconds. For example, Phastos abandons humanity after seeing what they did with the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima, but the scene after he is completely over that! Every Eternal has an issue that could have been a whole plotline in itself that would've been more interesting than the actual plot. There is also a main deviant that starts to grow stronger, knowledgeable and more intelligent, which was a very intriguing idea. Unfortunately, the deviant is completely wasted and ends up having little to no impact on the main story whatsoever. Just there so the Eternals could have someone to punch. They could've removed this intelligent deviant and the story would still be the exact same. What a waste...

Additionally, the pacing is quite bad. There is a lot of moments throughout where the movie just slows down considerably to the point that it can feel dull. This isn't helped by the fact that this movie feels like an eternity. It is 2 hours 30 minutes but it could be cut down by 15-20 minutes and still convey the same plot. There is also an incredible amount of exposition and it can almost feel like you are getting bombarded with way too much information. Character development is also rushed. Characters will go from feeling one way about something and completely do a 180 on it in a couple of minutes. It doesn't feel natural or believable. Furthermore, there are too many characters introduced and they don't get explored or enough screen time to really resonate with any of them.

Overall, the reviews make Eternals out to be the worst MCU movie. I disagree with that as there are definitely way worst MCU movies than this. Nevertheless, it does feel like the movie crammed way too many ideas into it and did not utilize the ideas properly. Eternals (2021) could have been something amazing and unique in the MCU. Sadly the final product just ends up feeling like a complete waste of its potential. There is some genuinely great stuff in it but I do feel like the Eternals might be better suited to a Disney+ series than a movie.

Really made you think about humanities purpose amongst all these god-like heroes and villains. I don't read the comics so the big plot reveal was wonderfully unexpected. The cinematography is top-notch and the sets and locations are gorgeous. One of the better looking films from the MCU.

The common complaints seem to be the casting and the pacing. I can't agree with those complaints. All the actors are pleasant and do a fine job and the film had me entertained for the entire runtime. The script has a nice balance of actions scenes and plot exposition mixed in with low-key reflective humour. It's not for adrenaline junkies but its not a snoozefest either. It's somewhere in the middle.

It's a worthy addition to the MCU. I'm happy to have seen it and hope to see more like it.

1) Cast selected from other notorious Nerd likable production .
2) Predictable plot, that manage to be over compicated at the same time.
3) Stiff and slow action scenes with too much (bad) cgi and slowmotion
4) Invasive politically correct insertion that are poorly excecuted and became irritating instead of inclusive
5) Lots of Heroes and Villans ... but most of them are just in the background and have zero personality or distinctive charateristic (except from ethnicity)
6) Very different from the source material
7)Legions of un-intelligent enemy monster minions..with generic look
8)Lens flares everywere

It has some quality though: It is a "serious" movie (it isn't a comedy like Thor Ragnarock 4 example) and to undersand it you you don't need to watch other 10 Marvel movies or TV show.

To sum up a super heroes movie that looks like it was filmed and scripped for television in the nineties (when they treated comic book and superheroes movie like a low budget, childish product).

I watched it last night, sandwiched with the evening news in between. I would say that it was okay and it held my interest, but definitely not on the scale of Infinity War or Civil War or Endgame. It had some very slow moments and I thought the story was a bit muddled. I would have liked even more background on the Celestials and their grand scheme for the universe, but hopefully that is coming. Otherwise it was entertaining, but I'm glad I didn't rush out to the cinema to see it. Cheers. Expand

The film still of course retain its signature set pieces, with an incredible budget to boot. Yet it has a different tone that seems to turn off many viewers expecting some non stop action. There's sloppy writing sprinkled throughout, actual character development is rushed to nonexistent, villains are killed off shortly after being introduced, and there are ugly CG bad guys but that can describe the majority of the MCU.

The CG fights aren't just a big messy blob, seeing how the characters interacted and influenced different civilizations throughout the ages was enjoyable and I would have liked more of that, finally getting into the meat of the cosmic side of Marvel with the Celestials and power cosmic is great, and how everyone's different powers were utilized was fun but they should have had more combos/synergy seeing how long they've been fighting together.

None of the characters make sense, the acting sucks, the cgi looks fake as hell, the concept is stupid, the central plot falls apart if you think about it for more than 3 seconds, the fight scenes are boring and unimaginative, the new "Eternals" heroes are just reskins of other DC and Marvel heroes. The biggest problem with Eternals is that they're trying to cram too many characters and too many events into two and a half hours. This film would have done a lot better if they had limited the Eternals to a smaller team, or if maybe it had been presented as a show or miniseries instead of a film. Having more time to flesh out each Eternal and develop the plot consistently and coherently would have improved every aspect of this story considerably. Expand

Well yeah it wasn't great. Too many characters with no sympathie. But it linked nicely into the MCU and things to come. So I guess it was fine for me.

Eternals is a grand movie. The visuals are stunning and the action scenes are good. This movie is about faith in leaders at difficult times. This movie is about faith in leaders at difficult times. Every character in this is unique and well developed, for the given runtime. The way of storytelling, introduction of Celestials and LGBTQ community is great. It is a touching movie but for a movie of this much grandeur, it needs more time to develop characters. The cast did a really great job with the time limit. Although, the Deviants and Kro were wasted at the end. Expand

Oh my goodness this was boring. And dumb. Arguments like in very bad soap operas, actors with one sheet of text, completely irrelevant main characters.. Marvel, I love you, but this is crap.

This film was very badly unfairly judged by critics and this caused people not to go to see it, that made me sad because this is an excellent movie and I hope that when it opens on Disney Plus, people will give it a chance.

amazing movie.
In a few hours I'm going to see Spider-Man: No way home and I hope it's just as good as this Eternals movie.

This movie should win an Oscar for best visual effects.
Because it's CGI, it's the best I've seen since Tobey Maguire's Spider-man 2.

The first half I considered lazy and without any emotion, but the second one gets good power to get into a colossal end. Considering this, all the cast just at the end get iconic and unforgettable, some more than others, having a development simple but complete. Right now, I'm going to talk about the how is this film similar to Black Widow, the script is very unfocused and sometimes without any feeling, but they have great moments to remember, talking about bring something new to the MCU formula. In order to understand human goals such as diversity and peace in the movie, several controversial comments were made, but they were understandable except for some.

The movie was poorly written, the characters were uninteresting and didn’t develop at all. The story tries to do much at one time and it doesn’t work at all.

Eternals è un buon prodotto, con alcuni buchi di trama ma colmati bene. I vari elementi aggiunti sono ottimi.

While pace was slow at times I actually found myself appreciating that, as so many MCU movies move at breakneck speeds, unnecessarily and usually at the expense of the story’s development. In Eternals Zhao let’s us sit with the complexities of the narrative unfolding before us. We spend much of the movie seeing just how human these demigods have become during their journey on earth. The story is ambitious to try and tell in the timeframe of a single movie, but it’s executed with clarity. Themes of ethics, creation, human experience, free will all play out in deep ways (even more-so than in other MCU films). This is a deep thinking superhero film, similar to Nolan’s Batman series, which might be why reviews have been sub-par. People seem to just want to be entertained at movies these days. Less explosions and a film that really challenges the viewer alongside its characters. Expand
